The function of the lungs is to provide oxygen from the air and push out carbon dioxide into the air from the body. The carbon dioxide released as part of the energy generation in the cell is carried to the lung where the lungs replace it with the oxygen we breathe from the air. The gases are carried by our bloodstream and the exchange of gases between the lungs and bloodstream precisely happens at the tiny sacs called alveoli. So any disorders of the alveoli could derail the entire process and prove to be fatal.

Alveoli – Workhorses of our Respiratory System:

Alveoli are the workhorses that drive our respiratory system. As tiny sacs that are located at the root of the lungs, they are the locations where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happen between the blood and respiratory system.

With the inputs of a renowned lung transplant surgeon in Hyderabad, Dr Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale, we will help you understand the core function of alveoli. Then we will identify the common alveoli disorders and find the best lung specialist in Hyderabad to treat these lung disorders. Read on:

As fundamental units of the respiratory system, they play a crucial role in the functioning of our body and any medical complication that negatively impacts their function can be detrimental or even fatal. The first step in preventing these medical complications is to be aware of their potential disorders and let us take the first step with this blog here.

Alveoli are tiny air sacs that are located at the far end of the bronchiole which look like roots of the lung plant. There are more than 480 million alveoli in the lungs and each of these tiny-balloon sac rare are the centres of gas exchange between the lungs and the blood.

The alveoli are surrounded by a thick network of blood capillaries. Given the walls of the alveoli are extremely thin (one-cell thickness) they enable gas diffusion between the bloodstream and the membrane of alveoli. As we breathe in the oxygen we fill our lungs reaches to the alveoli which are diffused into the bloodstream and the carbon dioxide in the bloodstream is diffused into the alveoli and ultimately breathed out.

A healthy respiratory system needs the alveoli to function optimally. However, lung disorders and diseases like Pneumonia, Emphysema, Tuberculosis, Respiratory Distress Syndrome and lung cancer can result in several alveolar abnormalities. The abnormalities of the alveoli can range from fusing of alveoli, inflation with pus, blood or fluid to alveoli collapse and damage.

Alveoli Disorders & Treatment:

The damage of alveoli need not always be from serious lung disease. Even smoking can ravage the health of alveoli leading to alveoli abnormalities and making it difficult for them to heal. The treatment for alveoli disorders depends upon the underlying cause of the abnormalities. Depending on the medical condition and its severity, the disorders may even need a lung transplant or surgery, according to lung transplant surgeon in Hyderabad Dr Alla Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
