It’s been a busy start to the year (no rest for the wicked so they say). Over the years we’ve watched many businesses come and go. Some businesses are still with us and it’s because of their continued support we’ve been lucky enough to still be running a magazine for nearly nine years. We’ve seen the high street constantly change, and marketing ideas develop with social media taking off in a huge way. With all the challenges we’ve been up against, it’s reassuring to know we still have our loyal advertisers. Many people may think Cardiff Times is a large business, but it is in fact a small local family run business with a massive amount of talented writers and contributors. Our son has recently been trialling to play for the U10s county cricket squad, and got through to the final trial, but sadly didn’t get picked for the final squad. If anyone’s child has had to go through any sporting trials, you’ll know only too well how anxious it is because all we want is for our children to achieve their potential, that is if they work hard for it and truly want it. We’re so proud of him because although he was disappointed he accepted the decision for what it is. It will only make him even more determined next time, so in a funny kind of way rejection can sometimes be good. February is the month of romance (for some), so we’ve dedicated a few pages to give you ideas of places to visit or gift ideas for that special someone in your life. There’s also a school half term in February, so we’ve also a feature giving you ideas for things to do and places to go - don`t say we don`t spoil you! Finally, we’d like to dedicate this welcome section to Georgia Stacey, who is leaving us this month. She has been a huge support and will be greatly missed when it comes to deadlines and helping us to be more organised. Thank you for being such a huge part of Cardiff Times.

picture perfect for television presenter at arts exhibition A TV broadcaster who took portraits of residents from a Cardiff care home has had her work included in an exhibition at The Gate Arts Centre. Rebecca John, who lives in Pontcanna, is a presenter and reporter for BBC Wales Today and is also a keen photographer. Last year, Rebecca completed a course at the Ffotogallery, a national development agency for photography and lens-based media in Wales, at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. She has had four pictures from her portfolio entitled ‘New Home’ selected by the Cardiff Art Gallery, alongside other students’ work from the past 18 months to feature at The Gate Arts Centre. The chosen portraits taken include two of Doris Danks and one of Iwan Thomas, and 102-year-old Daniel Rosewell, who all live at Tŷ Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna. Rebecca got to know the first permanent residents when she visited the home, who later on were delighted to get involved in her photography project. The TV presenter was then asked to officially open Tŷ Llandaff, which offers nursing and residential care from the age of 18, with BBC meteorologist Derek Brockway last summer. Rebecca said: “I’m really surprised and thrilled to have some of my photos chosen from Tŷ Llandaff care home for this exhibition. I’m so grateful to Tŷ Llandaff and the residents for the superb access they gave me last year.” Tŷ Llandaff care home manager Janice Evans is now preparing to arrange a visit to The Gate Arts Centre for the residents with Rebecca to view the pictures for themselves which runs until the end of January. She said: “Congratulations to Rebecca. We were delighted that Rebecca’s marvelous photos of residents from Tŷ Llandaff have been chosen for this special exhibition. “Rebecca is very popular with our residents and they really enjoyed working with her and playing a part in this photography project. Her success shows what a great photographer she is.”

Let Love Make A Miracle Of This Town fuses film, dance and performance that explores a strange, life affirming and heart-breaking event in a small town in South Wales where the senior citizens of the town are all too briefly rejuvenated and magically re-enlivened through a chemical placed in the drinking water. Through the reconstruction of key events, candid interviews with characters from the town and a smattering of idiosyncratic dance, Sean Tuan John (director) explores the concepts of ageing and memory by investigating an exhilarating and painful moment in the lives of residents of the town. Г 2 Г Name the comedian who might say 'I wonder if I can set up a comedy club1 in a refugee camp... in Palestine?' Of course, it’s Mark Thomas. And that is exactly what he tries to do. Dodging cultural and literal bullets, Israeli incursions and religion, Mark and his team set out to run a comedy club and put on two nights in the Palestinian city of Jenin. Only to find that it is not so simple to celebrate freedom of speech in a place with so little freedom. Jenin refugee camp, a stronghold for the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade during the Second Intifada, is not a place synonymous with laughs. But it is also home to the Jenin Freedom Theatre and to people with a wealth of stories to tell. Sherman Theatre, Cardiff www.shermantheatre.co.uk

things can only get better By Wyn Evans
The doorbell rang at an inconvenient moment this morning. The arrival was expected: our handy-man/decorator back for a second day. But the moment was inopportune. I asked a poorly-feeling Girl to let him in...
The girls topped their group, qualifying for the UK Finals in Belfast in March, and we travelled home in good spirits. Monday morning arrived. I was collecting the two dogs from the kennels. Sock-Gobbler and Drive-by Wee-er had just come in from exercising in the run and were filthy, meaning that, getting them into the car, I too became filthy in short order.
A week ago I had asked my Publisher for the last possible date by which to submit this article. "Next Wednesday", she said, "then it'll go straight to the Printer". Great, I thought, that will work just fine. The Girl, my daughter, who happens to have Down Syndrome (DS), would be representing her school and her Club in the British Schools Trampolining Zonal Competition in Chesterfield the coming weekend. The Boss and I, along with her team-mates' parents, would be travelling up with her, leaving Monday through Wednesday to write this. Plenty of time.
(Regular readers will remember Sock-Gobbler aka Wookie, our five year old bitch who can't see a pair of socks or pants drying on a radiator without downing them in one giant swallow. Drive-by Wee-er is our new addition, going on six months old, also called Daisy (The Girl chose her name!). Overall, her development is coming on a treat but her house-training is taking longer than we are used to, probably because we moved homes at a critical stage of her training. She always asks to go outside for number-twos and generally asks to go out to wee. She gets it right for days at a time and then suddenly she can sort-of walk-on-by, weeing the while. She is so quiet that The Boss and I might be in the room at the time and notice nothing until, say, we stand up to make a cup of tea. Happily, the floors are porcelain and easy to keep clean and hygienic. Thus was I, out the back hosing down the dogs (and myself), when I got a call from school. The Girl, who had been battling bravely against the sickness-nasal-throaty bug that has been so prevalent of late, had been sick in assembly. Could I collect her please. I left the dogs half-washed and put them into the utility room, replaced my galoshes with my moccasin slippers and collected a very sorry-looking daughter from Reception. The rest of Monday and most of Tuesday was spent cleaning up daughter-puke, whilst trying to maintain her fluids. I couldn't leave her on her own and consequently the dogs were not taken out for

their daily walks. So I let the dogs run free in the garden - getting themselves into a heck of a mess. The garden seems to be clay-based and drainage is poor, so getting muddy requires no great effort on their part. Each time I brought them back in I needed to hose their feet and coats then rub them down with a fluffy towel and then wash/mop the porcelain tiles. In this way Monday passed. Tuesday was much the same except the rain was worse than the day before and, oh yes, Drive-by Wee-er had three or four accidents too. I was by now a veritable D'Artagnan of the mop. But all this left no time for writing this article. Today, deadline Wednesday, arrived amid a rainstorm. I gave the girl a solitary Weetabix and listened sadly as she immediately hawked it back up. To save time, I poured her drink into the toilet and moved her piece of toast straight from the toaster into the food waste. We discussed the most effective technique for running to the toilet and being sick. The puppy then had an accident. Twenty years ago I had my nostril cauterised to prevent random nose-bleeds. Unfortunately, that treatment wore off a long while back. Daughter miserable; dog peeing; nose bleeding; me trying to stuff it with cotton wool whilst not moving from the kitchen sink for fear of bleeding on anything important; the door bell ringing.
dogs were barking at the decorator. The phone was ringing. The bleeding was getting worse and the sink was a bloody swimming pool for abandoned knots of cotton wool. The wee was trailing the grouting and spreading tile by tile. They were not the best ten minutes of my life. Two hours later. Thank heavens for: cotton wool and Dettol disinfectant spray; buckets and mops and decorators who aren't fazed by volumes of blood - I mean imagine the scene if he had fainted!; daughters who seem to be getting better hour by hour, and there’s still being enough time to get something across the Web to my Publisher.
... I asked a poorly-feeling Girl to let the decorator in, while I tried not to paint the sink and hob with blood spatter. I was nowhere near successful in this regard. "Nasty nose bleed you've got there", he said, "I used to get them. Had it cauterised. You should try it". "Mmnnggff", I replied. The Girl was back in the loo trying unsuccessfully to vomit up more phlegm. The
I hope you all avoid this horrible lurgy. All the best 'til next time!

12 herbs and spices for better health Did you know that your herb and spice rack not only can make your meals tastier and more ‘instagrammable’, but they are also jam-packed with health benefits? Herbs and spices can assist in a range of health concerns; from helping you reach your weight loss goals, to boosting your immunity, to even treating athletes foot!
The capsaicin's heat may help with a process called thermogenesis where your body can convert fat into heat and so burning more fat which adds to weight loss. Including these thermogenic ingredients in your diet may boost your metabolism by up to 5 percent, and increase fat burning by up to 16 percent,” explains Dr. Marilyn Glenville, the UK’s leading Nutritionist and Author of The Natural Health Bible for Women. 3. Black pepper “Black pepper contains a substance called piperine, which has similar effects to capsaicin in peppers. Piperine may help to stop the formation of new fat cells. A combination of these spices may be even more beneficial than single spices because when black pepper is combined with other spices such as capsaicin, it has been found to burn the same amount of calories as taking a 20-minute walk. Black pepper can also act as an anti-inflammatory; so can help with problems such as arthritis and painful joints in general. Black pepper may also help with lowering cholesterol and fighting infections,” explains Marilyn.
1. Cinnamon “Cinnamon has the highest antioxidant value of any spice. It has been shown to reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar and blood triglyceride levels. Cinnamon has also been used to alleviate nausea and to increase sensitivity to insulin and aid in fat burning. It provides manganese, iron and calcium. Its antimicrobial properties can help extend the life of foods. While cinnamon is an incredibly healthy and nutritious spice, it is often hard to branch out from the most common uses of cinnamon: biscuits, muffins and desserts. Other places in the world use cinnamon in savoury and sweet dishes, everything from breakfast to dessert. I like to use it in curries and tanginess and a sprinkle on top of my coffee,” advises Pippa Campbell, Nutrition & Weight Loss Coach.
4. Basil “I add basil to practically everything I make, from eggs to vegetables to soups. Basil has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties and can help prevent osteoarthritis. It has also been used in digestive disorders. Though commonly used in Italian cooking, Basil is a versatile herb that can be added to practically anything. Try making your own pesto with basil, garlic, toasted pine nuts and some nutritional yeast with a good olive oil. I add Basil to my Bolognaise at the end of cooking,” explains Pippa.
2. Cayenne pepper
5. Dandelion “For many people, dandelions are an irritating garden weed but traditionally, the roots and leaves of the plant have been used as medicines for breast problems, bloating, digestive disorders, aching joints, fevers, and skin disorders. Dandelions contain fibre so can help you feel full longer and so help control your appetite. The leaves of the plant are very rich in vitamins, including A, C, D, and B-complex. They also have high levels of minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, copper, choline, calcium,
“A substance called capsaicin is found in peppers and it is the compound that gives peppers their heat. It is thought to help fight weight gain and obesity by decreasing calorie intake and lowering blood fat levels.

9. Ginger “Like turmeric ginger also acts as an anti-inflammatory and is thought to help with maintaining healthy joints. It may also have the same thermogenic effects as capsaicin because it has warming effects in the body. Simmering a few slices of ginger root in boiling water makes a ginger root tea that stimulates and aids digestion. Ginger in food has the same effect,” explains Marilyn. 10. Oregano “Oregano is a common ingredient in Italian and Greek cuisine, and they have the right idea! Oregano (and it’s milder cousin, Marjoram) are antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic. Its oil and leaves are used medicinally in treatment of cough, fever, congestion, body ache and illness. Combined with basil, garlic, marjoram, thyme and rosemary, it creates a potent antiviral, anti bacterial, antimicrobial blend. It can also be sprinkled on any kind of savoury foods. A couple teaspoons added to a soup will help recovery from illness,” advises Pippa.
boron, and silicon. The leaves of the plant are very nutrient-rich, and so dandelion can be a good herb for women who are approaching the menopause or for those who have a poor diet. Dandelion can also be used as a gentle diuretic and can decrease cholesterol in some people. Today, many herbalists use dandelion to purify the liver and gallbladder of toxins and it can stimulate the manufacture of bile,” explains Marilyn.
11. Thyme “Thyme is a member of the mint family and contains thymol, a potent antioxidant (and also the potent ingredient in Listerine mouthwash). Water boiled with thyme can be used in homemade spray cleaners and or can be added to bathwater for treatment of wounds. Thyme water can be swished around the mouth for gum infections or for the healing of wounds from teeth removal. Teas made with thyme have been used to treat athletes foot and vaginal yeast infections. Thyme tea can also be taken internally during illness to speed recovery. In foods, it is often used in French cooking and Italian. Add to any baked dishes at the beginning of cooking, as it slowly releases its benefits. I like to add it to roasted vegetables,” explains Pippa.
6. Arrowroot “Arrowroot is a starchy herb that I keep on hand, especially since I went gluten free. It has an amazing thickening ability similar to cornstarch, and it can be added to soups, dips, baking etc. Arrowroot can be used in place of flour for a roux, or as the main baking ingredient in a gluten-free teething biscuit for kids. It is soothing and highly digestible, so it is often used in treatment for conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome,” explains Pippa. 7. Turmeric “Turmeric is the yellow spice that is often used in curries. Its active ingredient is curcumin which has had a lot of research focused on its anti-inflammatory effects for conditions like arthritis. Although the research has not shown that curcumin can actually help with weight loss it is thought to stop the re-growth of fat after someone has lost weight. This could be helpful, as many people end up putting back the weight they have lost after a diet,” explains Marilyn.
12. Cardamom “Cardamom is thought to help increase fat burning by improving metabolism. It also thought to be good for digestion, so people would often have cardamom tea after a meal, to help reduce flatulence and general digestive discomfort,” explains Marilyn.
8. Mint “Mint has traditionally been used to calm digestive troubles and alleviate nausea. Many people enjoy a tea made from peppermint or spearmint leaves, and the volatile oils in both have been used in breath fresheners, toothpastes and chewing gum. Externally, the oil or tea can be used to repel mosquitos. This herb is easiest to consume in beverage form, though an adventurous cook could add it to meat dishes or dessert recipes. Try adding it to a Greek Salad - Feta, cucumber, tomatoes or chop finely into homemade meatballs,” suggests Pippa.

They are suitable for all types of skin and a variety of skin concerns. Laser peels can be targeted at trouble spots in the top layer of skin, treating problems such as unsightly pigmentation. Deeper laser peels can target the deeper layers of skin, stimulating collagen production to produce a smoother, more youthful appearance. More aggressive laser peels can improve acne scarring.
CoolSculpting – perfect for those stubborn love handles Ideally, for best results CoolSculpting should be done in spring or late winter time if you’re looking to benefit in the summer. However, even if you’ve left it a little late, you’ll still see the benefits almost immediately. It works by exposing the fat cells in the targeted areas, to safe, cold temperatures. This in turn, causes the cells to literally shut themselves down. They are then eliminated over a period of around 12 weeks, when you’ll get to experience full results.
Overall, there are many treatments you can invest in to look great this summer. However, the above four are some of the most commonly requested at the Specialist Skin Clinic as pre-summer treatments.
It’s worth noting this treatment isn’t a good treatment option for obesity. It’s designed to treat small pockets of fat only and will only help you to drop a few pounds, focusing more on contouring the body, than helping you to lose weight.
For more information on these and other treatments go to our website at www.specialistskinclinic.uk or contact us on 02920617690 to book an appointment.
Laser hair removal – say goodbye to painful waxing! Of course, one of the key things you’re going to be concerned with this summer is ensuring your legs and body are hair-free. Waxing is often seen as the easiest way to achieve smooth hairless legs, but it’s also known to be extremely painful. Many people also don’t realise that you can still gain a little regrowth just a few days after waxing. With laser hair removal, it works by destroying the hair follicles, ensuring the hair follicle either does not grow back for a long time or it produces hair which is much finer and less visible. It does require a few sessions, depending upon which areas are being treated. However, it’s really effective and will help you focus on simply enjoying the summer season, rather than dreading it. Laser treatment of leg veins If you are planning to wear summer dresses, leg veins can sometimes get in the way. Laser

The Beauty Edit By Sarah-Jane Outten Regular readers will know me from my column featuring local businesses and charities. So, you will understand that my passion for writing is nothing new. However, you may not know that I am also a qualified makeup artist with a love for all things beauty related.
Camomile Face Mask Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of fine porridge oats 1 tablespoon of live yogurt 1 used camomile teabag, cooled and cut open Method: In one bowl mix the porridge oats and yogurt. Cut open the teabag and all the used leaves to the rest of the mix. Apply all over the face and neck, avoid the eye area. Sit back and relax for approximately 10 to15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a muslin cloth or flannel.
Lavender Body Scrub
February is the month of love, so why not show yourself a little love this month? I know, it’s easier said than done when we are busy. But it’s important to take a little time out. Not only does a little pampering feel good, it’s also good for the mind. So, this month’s Beauty Edit features some homemade spa ideas that won’t break the bank but will leave you feeling wonderful. You will probably have most of the ingredients at home. Obviously, you can double up on the ingredients if you need to.
Ingredients: 1 cup of granulated sugar 6 dessert spoons of melted coconut oil 6 drops of lavender essential oil Large handful of dried lavender flowers (optional) Method: Place all the ingredients in one bowl and mix together. This scrub is particularly good in the evening as the lavender is relaxing and aids sleep. Apply all over the body in the shower or bath and massage into the skin using circular movements. Again, take care not to slip – due to the coconut oil. This body scrub will keep in the fridge for up to one month. Store in an airtight jar.
Lemon Body Scrub Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar 2 tablespoons of rapeseed oil (olive or almond oil can also be used) Grated zest of half a lemon Method: In one bowl mix the sugar and oil together. Zest the lemon into the bowl, this way you will catch the oil in the zest too, which helps to give your scrub a refreshing aroma. Use in the shower on damp skin. Massage using circular movements all over the body, paying special attention to dry areas, such as elbows and knees. (Take care not to slip -due to the oil)

proud to be welsh! By Natalie McCulloch
According to a study published by the BBC, 2 in 3 people in Wales identify themselves as Welsh as opposed to British, compared to 1 in 3 in England who put being English before being British. Another study found that Wales is ranked the 3rd most patriotic country in Europe, only beaten by the Scots and the Dutch. If you’re more in the frame of mind that seeing is believing then you only have to visit Cardiff on a rugby match day or hear the passion when choirs sing the Welsh National Anthem, to understand that being Welsh is far more than just a nationality – it’s an identity, and one to be proud of too!
daffodils or sheep too!). There are few dull moments on St David’s Day throughout Wales! So what makes us so patriotic and what is so great about our patron saint? From doing research for this article I discovered pride arises from all avenues! Largely, our famous fellow Welshies (Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Gareth Jenkins to name a few), the beautiful parks, castles and places which surround us, or the fact that we are renowned to be friendly folk. As for our patron Saint, Dewi Sant or St David (who died on March 1st), we’ve a lot to be proud of! Many miracles have been attributed to him, the most incredible being when he caused the ground to rise beneath him when preaching so that everyone could see and hear him! Even on his deathbed he spread positivity by saying to his devoted followers: "Be cheerful and keep your faith and belief, and do the little things that you have heard and seen through me."
So, what better way to show our pride than with a huge celebration in honour of our very own Patron Saint, Dewi Sant! Every year March 1st sees hundreds of displays of wonderful ‘Welshness’ across the country to celebrate St David’s Day. From children going to school in traditional costumes, faces painted with dragons, to choirs belting out versus of ‘Calon lan’, the smell of freshly griddled welsh cakes and the sea of red/white and green flags swooping passionately among crowds of people dressed in red rugby shirts (and sometimes as dragons,
If you’re stuck for ideas on how to participate this March, here are a few pointers: -

• Wear or eat a leek (or several!). Legend states that on the eve of the battle against the Saxons St David advised the Brits to wear leeks in their caps so as to easily distinguish friend from foe. Today Welsh people around the world wear leeks on St David's Day and traditionally soldiers in the Welsh regiments eat a raw leek on St David's Day. If the thought of a raw leek leaves you less than enthused, fear not - there are also plenty of lovely recipes containing the versatile vegetable!
• See the sights – there’s plenty to explore in Wales! Castles, parks and beautiful beaches to name a few! Perhaps you could pop to St Fagan’s Museum to explore Welsh history (its free!), take a tour on the open top sightseeing bus of Cardiff, or sign up to the 15th year of the St David’s Day run around the picturesque Bute park, all in the aid of a fantastic young person’s charity ‘The Motivation and Learning Trust’. • Get those vocal cords working. Visit the aptly named ‘St David’s Hall’ to hear traditional songs, choral creations and take part in a star-studded sing along all c/o the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales. You may even fancy committing to learn the lingo - if so, St David’s Day is a perfect time to sign up to a Welsh course near you!
• Seek out a celebration and get involved. Check out the annual ‘St David's Day Parade’ through the streets of our city to experience some of the sights, sounds and scents which the people of Cardiff have to offer. It starts at the City hall at 1230 and it promises to be fun for all ages and backgrounds. Keep an eye on www.stdavidsday.org/ or in the local papers to find out what this years parade will offer!
• Be a Taffy with a DaffyB Treat yourself to a bunch of Daffodils or wear a daffodil in order to show your spirit. These sunny yellow emblems are not only beautiful but a sure sign spring is on its way too!
• Enjoy some Welsh food. There are plenty of places serving traditional food for all to enjoy! Check out Y Mocyn Du (named after a traditional Welsh folk song about a pig!), Ffresh in Cardiff Bay or Fabulous welsh cakes (the name says it all!). Alternatively, if you’re good with the griddle pan or handy at the hob, why not rustle up an array of Welsh cuisine for the occasion, perhaps you could share with colleagues and kin? Bara brith, welsh cakes, Glamorgan sausages, cawl are just a few of the delicious things Wales has to offer – go to: visitwales.com for some recipes to help!
• Wave, or display, your very own Welsh Flag. Our national flag is worth showing off! The Red Dragon (or in Welsh Y Ddraig Goch) - was granted official status in 1959, but the dragon itself has been associated with Wales for centuries. Some say it’s the oldest national flag still in use, and the most difficult to draw! However you chose to celebrate, make sure you do it with pride! Why not invite friends, family and colleagues to do the same!

Wyburn & Wayne Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are two of the city`s premier socialites, giving you their take on what`s hot in and around Cardiff! Wyburn : Into our second month already! Time is flying by. Wayne: And January was a busy one. After a great time with our families at Christmas, it was back to Cardiff to host New Year’s Eve at The Golden Cross. Wyburn: Such a fun night and a great start to 2018. Drank way too much alcohol but, hey, it was New Year’s Eve! Wayne: We loved Snow White at The New Theatre over Christmas and we invited the cast down to our Karaoke Party one Wednesday and it was so much fun. Wyburn: It really was, Gareth Thomas and Stephanie Webber doing Time Of My Life from Dirty Dancing was hilarious. Wayne: That was one of my favourite karaoke parties to date and what a great cast that Panto had. It was great to meet up with Mike Doyle too for an interview to promote his upcoming show at the New Theatre. Wyburn: Mike is the funniest man! He makes Panto, I couldn’t imagine Cardiff Panto without him. He will be reunited with Steph Webber too on his tour. The two of them together are comedy gold. Wayne: Speaking of shows, how incredible was ‘The Band :The Musical’ at The Wales Millennium Centre! I loved it so much, it featured all the Take That classics and the cast was amazing.
Wyburn: So we got to attend the press night for The Band and we caught wind there was going to be some very special guests there. We were also granted a meeting with the guys that won ‘Shine A Light’ who appeared in the show. Wayne: I have to admit the staff at The WMC did a great job keeping the secret regarding their special guests, and the audience went insane at the shows’ encore when none other than Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald joined the cast onstage for a medley of their hits. Wyburn: Such a special moment, and the die-hard Take That fans were hysterical, it was like Beetlemania, people screaming and crying. After the show we were ushered backstage where we got to meet Take That and the rest of the cast, who were buzzing with excitement after performing with Take That. Wayne: Such a great night! There was another special performance at one of our karaoke parties that same week. Local singer Rebecca James popped in to sing a few songs while taking a break from The Janet Jackson World Tour. Wyburn: Rebecca has been doing so well touring the States extensively with Miss Jackson, so it was great to see her at The Golden Cross belting out some songs. You just never know who’s going to pop along to our Karaoke Party on a Wednesday. Wayne: I had the pleasure of turning 43 last month too! I always try to have a big party because I tend to work lots over the Christmas and New Year period. By the time my birthday comes around I’m ready for 44 some fun.

floor of Indigo Hotel. Such a beautiful hotel in Dominions Arcade on Queen Street.
Wayne: Well yes, but you know I hate surprises. Although I’m ever so glad you didn’t cave in to my insistent pressure for you to tell me.
Wyburn: It was a lovely night. The food was delicious and the restaurant is so stylish with a balcony that has the best views of our city. I did some live art at the launch too, of non-other than Marco himself. That was fun, using food from the menu.
Wyburn: We just never know what to get you, you’re so difficult to buy for. Your face when we revealed your surprise was priceless.
Wayne: Our Radio Show started the new year with a new and longer time slot too. We’ve already had some great guests on including the winners of Miss Divine UK, our ‘Cardiffian Of The Month’ Owen Phillips and the makers of Channel 5’s Blind Date who are looking for contestants from Cardiff to go on the show.
Wayne: I am the biggest Madonna fan, so when the Madonna Tribute (Tasha Leaper) came on stage just for me I was gobsmacked and she was incredible just like the real deal. The best birthday gift EVER! Wyburn: We celebrated your birthday more with a little trip to London. We love our nights out in London, and when I got asked to present Joanna Lumley with a portrait at the La Voix Meets Show we jumped at the chance to go meet the icon, plus enjoy a night on the tiles.
Wyburn: Love doing The Wyburn And Wayne Show, and we have some great guests coming on in February, including our friend, funny man and all round entertainer Stifyn Parri. Look out for that one!
Wayne: How lovely was Joanna, she was just the nicest celeb I’ve ever met, and she loved the portrait you did of her.
Wayne: February is looking busy already, next month you’ll get to read about all our antics at this years Brit Awards!
Wyburn: Just being on stage with such an icon was so exciting, she even called me sweetie haha, just like Ab Fab! To spend time backstage with her after the show was such a special experience and she was so complimentary of my work. She’s a legend, love her.
Wyburn: We always have tales from The Brits!

Wayne: You’ve had some great press with your art already this year. With the excitement the Royal engagement and Prince Harry and Megan’s visit to Cardiff you got lots of press for your very unique portrait. Wyburn: Yes, I made their portraits on a stained carpet using Dr Beckmann’s carpet stain remover very interesting and it went global in the press! I’d love to meet them one day! transform your old conservatory into a new extension With the cold and wet weather continuing into the new year, thoughts inevitably turn to your home and ensuring all rooms are warm, comfortable and used to their full potential. However if you’re not making the most of your conservatory due to high temperatures during the summer and a colder area in winter then it may be time to consider replacing the old roof with a new energy efficient and weatherproof alternative. A replacement roof will give your glazed extension a new lease of life and offer beneficial features such as reduced rain noise and glare, at a fraction of the cost of replacing your entire conservatory. When Mr and Mrs Smith discovered that they weren’t making the most of their additional space they decided to embark on a replacement roof project. Having previously used the services of the Leekes installation team over 14 years ago, Mrs Smith explained: “We initially contracted Leekes to fit new double glazing to our bungalow some 15 years ago and being happy with the quality and standard of the work thereafter we decided to also contract Leekes to supply and build a new conservatory. This was carried out to our complete satisfaction 14 years ago.’’ The experienced and knowledgeable team at Leekes provided the ideal solution to convert their rarely used conservatory with a new roof. “The conservatory build was as good as the day it was fitted, but before making a decision about how we wanted to progress, we initially asked Leekes to provide advice regarding resolving the ceiling problem. After receiving various options to consider including a glass roof we opted for the new UltraRoof380 system which gives the roof a tile effect finish.’’
There is also the option to add Velux windows to create more light. The new roof has been a welcome decision by Mr and Mrs Smith and just over a month after the UltraRoof380 was fitted they agree it has transformed their enjoyment of this newly revitalised room. Mrs Smith remarked, “The difference is incredible with reduced rain noise, much better insulation and with the options of various inset lighting systems the room has completely changed for the better. Although still a conservatory in principle, the room feels more like another room and we have used it more over the last month than we had during the previous six months.’’ And about the recent service from Leekes, Mr and Mrs Smith said it was as they expected and had experienced throughout their window and conservatory purchase over 14 years ago. “The fitters were understanding, helpful, friendly and extremely caring about our needs and the quality of work is outstanding. We would strongly recommend Leekes for ALL window and conservatory works and suggest anyone looking at a new conservatory to think hard about the roof type as the new system is nothing short of fantastic in terms of appearance and practical use.’’ If your home would benefit from a new replacement roof visit our Llantrisant store to see all of the models available, book a FREE quotation today on 0800 015 7749 or visit leekeswindows.co.uk.
The UltraRoof380 that was fitted is one of Leekes’ newest and most exciting products, which combines a vaulted plastered ceiling on the inside along with down lights in the roof pelmet, and an authentic but lightweight tile effect on the 53 exterior.

“And Another Thing…….”
By Vince Nolan
i left a kidney in sydney with my circadian rhythms Hello my chums. We exited Chateau Nolan for Christmas and the New Year and had the enviable task of spending the better part of a month in Sydney with Son and heir and with sultry stopovers in Koala Lumpur (did you see what I did there?). Of course it was not all beer and skittles since we also took the Sainted Mother-in-Law with us in case of trouble with the Colonials. Luckily it was such a big country that we rarely saw each other. On booking our taxi to the airport, the driver asked me how many bags I was taking. I said just the Wife and Mother-in-Law. I’m dead.
currency, metro system, water taxis, people in hats, people not in hats etc. Oh and he was a Spurs fan too and talked with an appalling Mockney accent for some reason best known to himself. To give you an idea of the level of things, his best mate in the UK was a bloke called Dave who only ate cheese! He sounded like something out of Wallace and Gromit. The large house we shared benefitted from a comprehensive and unnecessary repair programme carried out by our erstwhile chum once he had bought some glue and a set of screwdrivers (I kid you not). Here is a picture of the knob<<he mended.
Anyway, according to the old song: “I left my heart in San Francisco.” Well I left a kidney in Sydney. Never been away for so long before. So much time and so many new things to drink. OK, I had to work too but 34 degrees of heat and the ocean is not a bad place to operate from as you can see from some of our pics below. A very splendid time was had by all and very sad to leave the place.
Finally, I could take no more of this and in an uncharacteristic flash of cruelty and genius, I neglected to tell him that the 6am start he was planning for the following morning to go whale watching was going to be wasted since this was a seasonal activity and the last boat sailed in November according to my internet enquiries. Still, they had a nice day out, a nice long day out,
However, just to make you feel better about all this, our Tour Party also included a hypochondriac and his missus. Quite why they wanted to come in the first place remains a mystery. An alleged diabetic who ate biscuits and cakes all day long and who did not like: air travel, the sun, the beach, Aussies, foreign food, alcohol, foreign

puts our internal clock or Circadian Rhythms out of sync. A new one on me but I got Circadian Rhythms, who could ask for anything more? Looking at UK news from the other side of the world is also odd in a wonderfully detached kind of way. We were hoping that Brexit would have happened in our absence but alas I see that all we have to show for another month of intense negotiations is the reintroduction of the blue covered passport which millions of people in the UK are too young to have ever seen. That showed Johnny Foreigner that we mean business.
in the very hot sun. Revenge is sweet you see, but not fattening unlike cakes and biscuits. We on the other hand were more lucky with our wild animal spotting. What global warming?
Talking of passports and Europe, an elderly American gentleman arrived in Paris by plane. At the customs desk, the man took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry-on bag. "You have been to France before, Monsieur?" the customs officer asked, sarcastically. The elderly gentleman admitted he had been to France previously. "Then you should know enough to have your passport ready." The American replied, "The last time I was here, I didn`t have to show it." "Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France!" The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate your country, I couldn`t find any Frenchmen to show it to."
So an Arctic explorer came face to face with a polar bear. Afraid of being eaten, he fell to his knees and started praying. When the polar bear knelt down beside him and started praying too, the man shouted, “It’s a miracle!” The polar bear opened one eye and said “Don’t talk while I’m saying grace.” Of course one can quickly become the dinner and not the diner in hotter climes if one is not careful. Saw plenty of big spiders and the guys at Sydney Aquarium had electronically tagged eight Great White Sharks who were regular visitors to the confines of the Harbour apparently. Scary stuff. In a related Harbour matter we came across a ferry called Ferry McFerryface, an homage to the polar research vessel christened Boaty McBoatface by a public poll. Apparently this is not the first time this sort of naming by poll has occurred. Greenpeace launched a campaign to name a humpback whale in the South Pacific in an attempt to keep it from being poached by the Japanese. The poll prompted a voting frenzy after Mr Splashy Pants was put forward and ended up winning. Presumably it was the season for whale watching in the South Pacific, at the time, unlike Aus.
Finally, we arrived home safe and sound to “Blue Monday” whatever that was. What a load of tosh. I’ll tell you about our “Blue Monday.” The gas boiler packed up, two new tyres were needed on the car which also required an unexpected main dealer service. Downhearted, depressed, demotivated, no. This is life my friends and moaning about it never solved anything. Until next time.
Now travelling large distances can be quite a strain on the metabolism. Apparently jet lag can occur when crossing multiple time zones, and

talking business & Fabulous ffandango’s! By Sarah-Jane Outten
Happy February everyone. I don’t know about you, but these short days and long nights are a challenge to the mood. It can be a tough time for local businesses too. We all feel the pinch at the start of the year and as our finances are squeezed more than ever; that January feeling stretches into February. This was very much the subject when I was invited to be a guest on The Power Lunch with Kelly RB on Radio Cardiff. With the recent closure of 29 Park Place, we were
reminded of how fragile independent businesses can be. During the show we spoke about the importance of community and local businesses. Kelly and I agreed that an independent business might charge 20p extra for a coffee than a chain coffee shop. However, that money goes straight to a local business and puts food on the table of a local family and our neighbours. In turn, this strengthens our communities and allows them to thrive.
A local business can often be the soul of the high street too, providing a friendly face for the elderly, and creating a relationship with our young people, thus making them feel part of the bigger picture. It seems, at times, both these sectors of society are forgotten about, but it’s so important that we keep the spirit of community alive – for everyone. Of course, it would only be right for me to share an independent business that I have recently visited! This

month I found myself popping into Ffandango’s in Llandaff. A lovely café, delicatessen and greengrocer. They specialise in Welsh products, organic fruit and vegetables, cheeses, preserves, bread, wines, ales and so much more. I received a warm welcome along with a freshly brewed Americano – it was delicious. A lovely walk around Llandaff Cathedral followed by a coffee did the trick. I can recommend it, especially when you can take home some delicious produce for later! I noted that they also host comedy nights and if that is of interest, I would suggest keeping up to date via their Facebook page. Organic fruit and vegetables are also available for delivery, all you need to do is give them a call to check delivery and what’s available at the time. You can find Ffandango’s at 26 High Street, Llandaff, CF5 2DZ. I would like to thank Radio Cardiff for inviting me on The Power Lunch, it’s a great community radio station, why not tune in? Don’t forget you can catch up with our very own Wayne and Wyburn on Friday mornings too! 98.7FM. Until next month, remember to shop local and please get in touch if you are a local business or you would like to share your favourites. You can message me via my Facebook page Sarah-Jane-Cardiff Times.
