Much of April was spent eating our way through the mound of Easter eggs the children received. At the time of writing, there is still one left! Last month, Mark was given the task of doing some chores around the house whilst I took the children for a weekend away in Porthcawl. It was lovely coming home to the smell of fresh paint, the only problem was he touched parts of the hallway, up the stairway and the dining room with the wrong colour paint! He did do a lovely job with the glossing and sanding our downstairs doors though. At the time of writing, we are preparing to travel to London for our son’s annual rugby tour to play in the London Irish Festival, which is one of the biggest children’s rugby festivals in Europe. It is always a great weekend, with the boys in the team and parents bonding brilliantly both on and off the pitch! We hope you like our front cover, Louise and I certainly do! If you get the chance, please go and see NoFit State Circus in Cardiff Bay at the end of the month, we took the children to see their show the last time they were performing in the city, and we were blown away by how good it was. This month, as well as our usual articles from our talented writers, we have a feature about fun things to do during the month of May, and to spoil you even more, another feature called ‘Food From Around the World’. Finally, we have been lucky to have had so much help from a number of students on work placements recently, thank you one and all for the effort you have put in, we really do appreciate it. Until next month, happy reading.

the friends of nant fawr community woodlands We have also been awarded a grant by Greggs, and the money has been spent on hundreds of native wild flowers for the entrances. Grow Wild (sponsored by Kew) have also provided us with native species seeds, and members of the Friends have donated seeds and flowers. These were sown and planted by four local schools and the Friends last month; our thanks to Llanishen High, Coed Glas, Ton yr Ywen and Rhydypenau Primary Schools.
The past months have been a busy time for the Friends group as we have continued our work in the maintenance and development of the 100 acre site. We were very proud of the Green Flag awarded to us last year and are determined to continue our efforts. The monthly workdays have seen us trying to maintain the paths throughout the length of the site. Drainage has been improved by the digging of ditches and undergrowth is continually being cut back to keep the paths clear. The litter picking is an ongoing activity and we need to acknowledge the efforts of the community in general that support us in keeping the Nant Fawr area so clean. We have continued coppicing in the secondary woodlands and removing invasive plants e.g. laurel. The hay raking is always popular and sees a large turnout of volunteers.
We have been pleased to support pupils from y10 and y12 in local schools to complete their hours of voluntary community work for their Welsh Baccalaureate and Duke of Edinburgh Awards. They have attended work days, carried out litter picks and delivered publicity leaflets. Some of them also spent time collecting acorns for Natural Resources Wales as part of their Conservation programme. We hope that their experiences with us have helped them to understand a little more about their local environment and the practicalities involved of maintaining it. Cardiff University Biology students have also been studying the area as part of their course.
We have been fortunate in obtaining a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the buying and erecting of nine new notice boards for the entrances to the Nant Fawr area. These will be appearing at the sites chosen over the next few months. The graphics boards were developed with the help of the Council and four of the boards will have an extra panel for the display of notices about events and information relevant to the area.
We also have walks, led by our Ranger, along the Nant Fawr; the next one (entitled “Aliens in Nant Fawr”) will be on May 6th, 2 – 3.30 pm. If you would like to come along we shall be meeting at the entrance to Cardiff High School. We also have a Family Fun Day on July 8th. This is an annual event and children (a supervising adult is essential and will be expected to join in!) can do a stream shuffle, bug hunting with nets, an Explorers Trail, a Scavenger Hunt plus other activities. Picnics and welly wearing are encouraged! This will take place a short walk from the Rhydypenau Road entrance to Rhydypenau Park.
Nobody can have missed the work in the area by Welsh Water Dwr Cymru. The pipes running from the reservoirs from the northern entrance, through Rhydyblewin meadow to the Rhydypenau top entrance, have required attention and some of the vegetation of the area has suffered. However, we are confident that Nature will “do its bit” and the growth will recover in time. We shall try to work on some areas which are particularly badly affected. Welsh Water Dwr Cymru have already replaced some of the paths affected which has been of great benefit.
7
We always welcome new volunteers and anyone interested in joining our committee; contact us through nantfawrcommunity@gmail.com.

IT’S A SONG AND DANCE AT CARDIFF CARE HOME
Guests included the Barry Male Voice Choir from the Vale of Glamorgan, champion Irish dancers and music from pianist Jeff Holder.
Residents from a Cardiff care home were entertained by a Barry choir and Irish dancers to mark a national open day focused on creating community relationships.
Tŷ Llandaff care home manager Janice Evans said: “We are always looking at new ways of building relationships with the local community and Care Home Open Day was a fantastic way of bringing generations together.
Tŷ Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna, joined thousands of other care homes around the UK by opening their doors to the public for Care Home Open Day last Saturday.
“We were delighted to welcome all our guests, including the Barry Male Voice Choir, who have become very close friends of the home, and our fabulous Irish dancers. There was a real buzz around the home about the event and the residents had a great day.”
The idea behind Care Home Open Day, now in its sixth year, is to encourage local people to visit care homes in the community and work together to build long lasting relationships. The suggested theme in 2018 for Care Home Open Day was ‘linking communities’ so Tŷ Llandaff invited the public to enjoy the open day and help celebrate The Queen’s 92nd birthday which took place on the same day.

May Day has heralded the start of summer for many hundreds of years in Wales. It’s time for the Green Man to wake up from his winter sleep as the buds burst and life returns to the woods and fields. The day is marked with merriment, music and what must surely be the most famous of all the folk dances, the raising of the maypole. Come and join us this weekend for some May madness inspired by the traditions and legends that surround this special time of year. well actually...
By Wyn Evans So, have you noticed how many times 'so' is used to begin a conversation? Once you listen out for it you hear it everywhere. Another common usage is to preface a statement with 'well', usually drawn out into 'we-ell'. Indeed, my daughter, The Girl, who is twelve years of age and happens to have Down Syndrome (DS) has taken to beginning almost every discussion with 'well' and bracketing it with 'actually', thus: "we-ell, you promised to take me swimming actually", was how she recently called my bluff.
commands attention. There is laughter in it too, as if the speaker finds the whole to-do a real hoot. "Father", it said, piercingly. And again, louder, "Faaatherrr"! It is The Girl, who has gone halfway up the stairs to partake of the big blue water-slide. "Father, look, I'm up here actually!" I join in, "Well, daughter dear, enjoy your slide. About a month ago she evinced two new behaviours. First, she started calling me 'Father' and also phoning me to tell me that: "this is your daughter here, Father". She uses it in so many tones of voice and locations that I'm starting to feel like a patriarch in a BBC costume drama about Edwardian society: stern but just; unwilling to laugh much but able to see the funny side of events; firm but not unyielding. (She has since moved on from asserting "Father!" or "Mother". Now, it's "Dadther!" and "Mumther!" plus giggling. I'd call her "Daught-ther", but it just sounds silly!) Secondly, when she wants something, she's taken to looking winsomely up and fluttering her eyelids at me.
I can get away with nothing any longer in my dealings with her. At the end of last week, to avoid taking her to the 'big pool' down the Bay, where I feared I'd be the only overweight, old, bald fellow, I told The Girl I'd take her swimming there this Monday, hoping she'd forget. I usually keep the promises I make but when she was younger I could occasionally rely on her not recalling every pledge. Nowadays, she remembers everything perfectly. I feel like a slave to her memory. So she shamed me into keeping my promise and we were in the adventure pool in the Bay. The power jets were shooting-out water. The pool was packed to the rafters. Kids jumping, parents shouting, teenagers doing what teenagers do. Guards were blowing whistles, I assume to bring some order; yeah, right! The noise was absolute. Then one word rings out. It brings absolute silence. The tone
20
Well, a few years ago at Bluestone, The Girl, The Boss, and I were having a splash. What appeared to be a mum plus two teenage daughters walked into the pool. One of the girls had DS. After a while, the natural flow of things, not least the artificial currents, found us all in the same place at the same time. The Boss said 'Hi'. The mum was cool-polite-

desired positions. But even after the braces come off, two years later, she would be required to wear a transparent cover two or three nights a week. I asked the dentist whether she thought that there was an overwhelming need to address this issue here and now. She said 'no', adding that the decision could even be made in adulthood. So I said no thanks. If there is no pressing medical need then I see no reason to medicalise my daughter unnecessarily. She can make her own decision when she reaches her maturity. I'm sure she'll thank me for this in due course!
impolite in return, making it clear they none of them would chat. I remember that she had a Lancashire accent. There may have been a score of reasons for not wanting to talk; from not liking the look of us through to just not in the mood. The Boss and I always go out of our way (as does our Girl) to offer time and greetings to others we meet who are 'DS families'. The Bluestone experience taught us that we all reserve our space and privacy whether because of or in spite of conditions we may have in common. Nonetheless, we still go out of our way to at least catch a fellow DS family's eyes and nod hello with a smile. The typical response is: BIG-GRIN-HOW-ARE-YOU?, followed by pleasant conversations and sometimes new friendships.
Well, another column draws to a close. So actually, I think you might enjoy a laugh at my expense before I sign off. It was one evening earlier this week. The Boss was in bed and laughing fit to burst. When my Parkinson's is bad it's all I can do to stand on my feet, and lift one leg to pull on my pyjamas, each leg in turn. I often fall over onto the bed, such is my lack of balance and tone. What I wasn't consciously aware of is that when I successfully get a leg in (or on a good night, both legs in) I proudly exclaim "Yes! I did it!". The Boss said to me that she finds this hilarious and I do too. I never thought that, in my sixtieth year I'd take pride and find fun in getting my own pyjamas on but I do. And lest you think The Boss unkind, she isn't. She has MS and we've learned to talk about our conditions and to find humour in them wherever we can. A year ago I was well enough to try to jump into both pyjama legs simultaneously (whilst holding the trouser tops). This usually saw me ending up on the bedroom floor, bum in the air and limbs akimbo, in unnatural positions. Well Mein Frau laughed a lot at that too. As did I actually!
I was reminded of this after The Girl re-joined me following her plunge on the blue water-slide. A dad of about fifty with (I'm guessing, correctly, I think) his son who was in the range eighteen to twenty-eight, were in our proximity quite a few times. They were throwing one another a rubber ball, which landed on The Girl's head. She passed it back to the dad, who was close enough for us to see the whites of his eyes, as it were. He looked at me then at The Girl, giving her a good, long stare but no smile or greeting or thanks, before turning away, as if in a temper, I'd guess, based on his expression. Despite what I wrote, above, about not assuming that all DS families want to share time with other DS families, I wanted to say something about his lack of grace to my Girl. I didn't, of course. I'm just recording it here, whilst maintaining that he had every right to be rude, dismissive, and boorish to a smiling twelve year old girl. Sorry, what I meant to write is he had every right to be a little stand-offish whilst maintaining his and his son's privacy from people they didn't know or want to know. Yes, that's what I meant, for sure. So much for water-based adventures! Visiting the dentist always roots one firmly in the here and now, giving us a bracing experience. The Girl had her six monthly check-up with our dentist yesterday. All was fine, though the dentist noted that some of her lower teeth are bunching slightly while some of her top teeth are a little spaced. We were offered an appointment with the Orthodontist at the Teaching Hospital. Apparently there is a 0-10 scale that Orthodontists use; a '10' would require immediate application of braces. The Girl was at the other end of the scale. If the Orthodontist said braces might help her then she'd be likely to have to wear them for one, maybe two years. The way they work is that the wiring pulls the teeth, ever so slowly, into the

We Now Offer Facial Rejuvenation What are anti-wrinkle injections? Anti-wrinkle injections are regularly referred to as ‘Botox’, which is short for Botulinum toxin. This is a naturally available protein that makes the muscles of expression of the face to relax, which in turn smooth’s out the wrinkles in the skin. It is the world’s most popular cosmetic treatment for removing wrinkles*. Thousands of men and women have anti-wrinkle injections in the UK regularly. By relaxing the facial muscles, the skin wrinkles overlying the muscles are made less visible; this results in a natural, rejuvenated appearance.
A Brief Summary of The Treatment – Frequently Asked Questions? What is the usual procedure time? Approximately 20 - 30 minutes although the injection process itself will only take several minutes. The treatment will involve Dr Zena making a series of small shallow injections into the muscles of your face. Dr Zena’s Botulinum toxin of choice is Azzalure® by Galderma. What areas can benefit from an anti-wrinkle injection? Anti-wrinkle injections are most effective when used to reduce the signs of ageing and skin wrinkles in the following regions: • Forehead/brow (Horizontal forehead lines) • Between the eyebrows (Frowning lines) • Sides of the eyes (Crows feet)

harriet jones: cardiff’s commonwealth games competitor By Ailsa Harvey Twenty-year-old swimmer, Harriet Jones, did Cardiff proud in her first Commonwealth Games for Team Wales last month in Australia.
wait to get there”, she exclaimed. “The accommodation and swimming location has an amazing setup and looks incredible.”
When Harriet Jones found out that she would be competing in the Commonwealth Games as part of Team Wales, she was ecstatic to say the least. “I felt overwhelmed for sure,” she said. “I had a phone call from my coach and he was absolutely over the moon, as was I.”
In the Games themselves, Harriet competed in the Butterfly; 50m, 100m and 200m distances. With her 100m race commencing the day after the opening ceremony, Harriet was not able to make an appearance for the traditional celebration that kicked off the games. She added, “Unfortunately, swimmers are unable to go to the opening ceremony as we are racing the next day. However, I think it will be an amazing experience for the rest of the Welsh team and I am sure it will be a breath-taking ceremony.”
In her Commonwealth debut, Harriet delivered a strong set of swims, making the semi-finals in two of her events; 50m Butterfly and 100m Butterfly and coming 5th in both.
Harriet enjoyed her time in the Sunshine Coast, as part of a pre-camp with her fellow team-mates before moving into the Gold Coast’s ‘Athletes Village’ in preparation for the games. “As this is my first Commonwealth Games, I’m definitely looking forward to being a part of it and swimming at a bigger meet than I am used to.”
Harriet Jones is a Cardiff Swimming Club athlete being coached by Graham Wardell. 2013 saw Harriet collect two silver medals in the UK School Games, and in the British Summer Championships of 2016 she earnt herself another silver medal in the 100m butterfly. The following year, she returned to win three medals, placing second in the 200m butterfly and third in both the 50m and 100m.
Despite the fact the competition was a major and much larger competition to those Harriet has competed in previously, competing in swimming has been a part of her life since she was 12 years old, beginning the sport at the age of 3. “My parents believed that it was important to learn to swim and to not be afraid of water. Once I started I fell in love with it.” Now, aged 20 she recognises the sport as one of the best sports for fitness.
Speaking before heading ‘down under’, Harriet referred to attaining her place on Team Wales as her proudest achievement to date: “Representing your country definitely means a lot because you don’t get to do it very often. Being part of a team is an amazing experience.” Inevitably, nerves hung in the balance in the build up to the biggest races of her swimming career to date. “I am feeling nervous, but I can’t wait to get there now and race for Wales. Training is definitely going well and I’m working hard to race at my best.”
“I personally think it’s an amazing sport and a very good way of keeping fit” Watching high-profile athletes swim with impressive times has inspired Harriet to be the best she can be. Olympian Michael Phelps, from the United States, has become a role model for her, as she recalled his final race as having a lasting impact on her.
Upon finding out that she would be heading to the Gold Coast, Australia, Harriet expressed her anticipation. “Australia is a beautiful place and I can’t

While training in these conditions, Harriet was enjoying training outside: “My favourite thing, which I’m sure is every swimmer’s favourite thing is that while you are swimming you’re getting a tan!” However, the weather was not all beneficial. “As it’s an outdoor pool, with lots of sun, it can be hard to do backstroke,” she explained, also admitting the addition of some rain causing further issues.
Currently, Harriet trains at Cardiff International Pool with Cardiff Swimming Club. “I’ve grown up in the club”, she says. “I have been here for 8 years now and it is the closest facility to me.” During this time, Harriet has attended both the Bishop of Llandaff High School and Cowbridge Comprehensive whilst continuing with her swimming simultaneously. Admitting that “juggling school with exams going on and swimming was tough”, Harriet has decided that for now she will channel all her attention to improving in her swimming career. “At the moment I am not in University as I’m trying to focus just on my swimming.”
The support shown from home greatly helped to encourage the athletes even from the other side of the world. Harriet believes that supporters from home being able to watch the races on TV only helped to spur her on. “It definitely pushes me to do my best from all of the support”, she says. “I know there [was] a lot of support behind me from friends and family, but also Cardiff Swimming Club. [They supported] myself, Xavier Castelli and Bethan Sloan.”
This being said, what does a standard day consist of for the Commonwealth competitor? Beginning her day at 5am, to get to swimming training for 6am, Harriet spends 2 hours in the pool most mornings. “After a stretch and then going back home to recover and fuel up I head back down to the pool for 2:15 for gym”, she says. “Then I get into the pool again straight after for another 2-hour session.” A large percentage of the day is devoted to improving her times and technique, and so focusing solely on this allows Harriet to take much-needed time to relax and refuel. “In my spare time I love to read and spend time with my dogs.”
Head Coach Graham said, “I could not have had more fun coaching this great bunch of Cardiff swimmers at the Commonwealth Games, it has been a pleasure working with you all Harriet, Beth and Xav.” Well Done Harriet!
After settling in Australia, Harriet prepared to represent Wales and had high hopes for her events. While hoping to gain some impressive times, she also recognised the importance of making the most of this incredible event that she will be a part of. Filled with enthusiasm, Harriet simply hoped to enjoy the whole experience. “To be able to say I am on the Welsh Commonwealth Team is a massive achievement of mine.” Following her arrival in Australia, Harriet explained how being there increased her eagerness to race. With just one week to go until her races commenced, Harriet couldn’t wait to get to the Athletes’ Village. The Village held over 6,000 athletes throughout the course of the games. Containing pools, a well-equipped gym, a salon and a smoothie bar, the village was reported to be a great place for athletes to unwind and prepare themselves between races. Additionally, sports medical personnel were on duty to assist with any medical inquiries. Regarding her training, the jet lag did not impede her progress. The change in climate and location was viewed as a positive in Harriet’s eyes; relishing in her new environment away from South Wales. With slight changes in pool lengths used for training, it was the weather which was the main difference she noticed.

FREEZE THE FAT AWAY! CoolSculpting is only available in medical clinics, as assessment and supervision by a doctor is needed to ensure the suitability for and safety of the person seeking treatment, so that the very best results are obtained.
Are you trying to shift stubborn areas of fat, seemingly resistant to diet and exercise? Do you hate the thought of scalpels and surgery? If the answer to both these questions is yes, then we at The Specialist Skin Clinic have a perfect solution for you - a procedure called CoolSculpting. This is a fat reduction process which will transform your body.
Call on 02920617690 to arrange a consultation with our Coolsculpting specialist. An assessment will be made of areas to be treated. A treatment plan will then be customised for you.
CoolSculpting effectively and safely eliminates fat without the risk, downtime and cost of surgery such as liposuction. Explained simply, our bodies produce fat cells only up until our late teens, and these cells expand or contract dependent on how much fat we carry. Unlike other cells in the body, if a fat cell is eliminated, the body will not reproduce another in its place.
Then, lie back, and let the CoolSculpting applicator do its job. It merely takes a couple of hours. You have nothing to lose but fat.
Using a non-surgical applicator, CoolSculpting cools fat cells to temperatures that trigger their natural death. These cells are then flushed naturally by the body over the following weeks. Once eliminated, the fat cells do not return. CoolSculpting results in a clear reduction of fat in the area treated, and the effects start to show in as little as three weeks, with best results showing between four and twelve weeks of treatment.

The Beauty Edit - From Mermaids To Unicorns By Sarah-Jane Outten Regular readers will know me from my column featuring local businesses and charities. So, you will understand that my passion for writing is nothing new. However, you may not know that I am also a qualified makeup artist with a love for all things beauty related. Hello, and welcome to the May edition of The Beauty Edit. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get stuck in a rut when it comes to trying new cosmetic and beauty products. I often find something I like and stick to it. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that – they become your trusty hero products! However, I get to a point when I need to refresh. As we are mid spring with summer fast approaching, I thought now was the perfect time to try something new. And I’ve found some awesome summer goodies to share with you.
Next up - Be a Mermaid and Make Waves Eyeshadow Pallet by Tarte Cosmetics. I was lucky enough to be gifted this beautiful shell compact, and it didn’t fail to impress, it’s real handbag candy. Inside you will find 14 mermaid inspired, shimmer eyeshadows. Each one has beach and ocean themed names like, Shipwreck, Lagoon, Salt Water and Splash. These eyeshadows blend beautifully, they are high pigmented with very little fall out – I highly recommend. Priced at £37, it’s a considered purchase. And if you aren’t a fan of fancy packaging, it might not be for you. But if you do love a bit of glitz, you will adore splashing out on this one!
Firstly, a practical product that won’t break the bank. The Ordinary are relatively new kids on the block when it comes to skincare. This brand provides no nonsense, does what it says on the tin results. A little sister of Deciem, it’s kicking up a storm in the beauty industry. They have a lot of products available, and all of them are affordable to most budgets, but you don’t feel like you’re left with a budget priced product. This month I tried the High-Adherence Silicone Primer, and let me tell you, I’m impressed. Use this as the last step in your skincare routine. It smoothes and hydrates the skin as well as blurring lines and pores. Not only this, it keeps make up looking fresher for longer. Priced at just £3.90, it’s a steal.
While we are on the subject of mythical creatures8lets end with the fabulous Unicorn inspired make up brushes from Spectrum Collections. The lovely ladies from Spectrum Collections are based in Barry – so it’s a local brand. Not only this, the company pride themselves in being a registered vegan and cruelty free. They have an array of make-up brushes, tools and accessories that are paradise to all who love glamour. I have been testing the 10 Piece Essential Set – Attention Seeker. The brushes are a joy to use, they provide great application as well as looking great in the process. I feel the ultimate test of quality is how brushes are when washing, and these ones come up as good as new – Magic! This particular set is £39.99, and worth every penny.

don’t forget to remember those with memory problems this may By Natalie McCulloch What can you do in under 5 minutes?
• Dementia affects people in different ways, commonly symptoms include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
Make a cup of tea? Load the washing machine? Listen to your favorite song? Finish the last few pages of your book? Become one of the 850,000 in the UK diagnosed with dementia?
• 5% of people with dementia are of working age, with some diagnosed as young as 30. • Dementia is one of the leading causes of lifestyle change later in life, ahead of cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Believe it or not, all of the above are possible. This year an estimated 225,000 people in the UK will develop dementia – that’s one person every 3 minutes!
All this considered, dementia may sound pretty bleak, but despite many people perceiving it in this way, it is important to remember that it is possible to live well with dementia.
So, it’s vitally important that we understand what dementia is, and what it is not, and most importantly that we explore how we can support those affected by dementia to remain part of the community.
Christine Bryden is one example of how this is possible. In her brilliant book ‘Dancing with Dementia’, Christine invites the reader onto her rollercoaster since being diagnosed with dementia at just 46 years of age. As a top civil servant and single mother of three, Christine wasn’t about to sit back and see her life ground to a halt. Instead she embraced it and even more amazingly, continued to lead an active life, involving meeting her husband, becoming an advocate for others with dementia, and remaining a prominent part of her children’s life. Her book promotes a positive image of a range of often depressingly described disorders and details how with support from loved ones and
So, what is dementia? One of the most common answers is along the lines of ‘memory loss in old age’, but there’s a lot more to dementia than this, here are a few points worth noting: • Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function. • Dementia is usually progressive and eventually severe. • Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and Korsakoff’s.

information session near you or by watching the online video. You will then be encouraged to share how you are going to turn your understanding of dementia into a practical action. You don't have to commit to doing something time-consuming. Every action counts. Actions could include: • Getting in touch and staying in touch with someone you know living with dementia • Volunteering for an organisation that helps people with dementia • Get crafty – crochet some ‘forget me knot’ flowers (the emblem of the Alzheimer’s Society) to raise vital funds • Campaigning for change, e.g. by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s campaigns to improve the lives of people with dementia • Wearing a badge and telling 5 friends about the Dementia Friends initiative • Carrying out a personal action e.g. be more patient when out in your community
Inspired? If so please help to spread the message that dementia doesn’t have to be a reason to resort to a half-lived life, more that it can be celebrated as a new chapter of a life worth living! Dementia Action Week (21 to 27 May) is the perfect opportunity to do this. This week aims to do much more than simply raise public awareness and encourage people to offer support, its mission is to take action to make change happen for people affected by dementia. This year, people are encouraged to unite and take actions big and small to make a difference to the everyday lives of people with dementia. It could be as simple as being more patient in queues, signing up for a training session or helping make your community dementia-friendly.
There really is so much each of us can do to help – small steps for big changes – so what are we waiting for?
A dementia friendly community strives for somewhere people with dementia can feel in control of their daily lives and be an active and valued member of a supportive, knowledgeable and safe community. Over 225 communities are already involved – is yours?

Past shows like BIANCO were more like aerial spectaculars in a ‘promenade’ style, where audiences would walk around with the action going on above and all around them. But in LEXICON we’re embracing the origins of circus with traditional style seated ‘in-the-round’ audience and some more traditional skills and techniques. There’ll still be spectacular, heart-in-your-mouth aerial skills, beautiful images and exciting live music, but now we can perform on a stage as well, which opens up world of exciting possibilities. We have an international cast of incredibly talented performers and an amazing creative team, it’s shaping up to be a fresh and fantastic show.”
LEXICON Cardiff Bay 26 May - 9 June 2018 www.nofitstate.org/lexicon Internationally renowned Cardiff company will bring their newest large-scale touring show, LEXICON, home to Cardiff as part of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover - their first performance of a large-scale tented work in Cardiff since 2015. With the same award winning creative team that created ImMortal, tabu, and Bianco, Lexicon is a stunning new production brings together world class circus performers, musicians, and artists in a daring, seductive and utterly contemporary take on the circus experience. Lexicon takes place in the company’s iconic Big Top, where audiences will find an elaborate new stage and

The Circus: 250 Years Young documentary celebrates this far reaching and ambitious youth led project. It is proving to be an educational and inspiring journey for the NoFit State Youth Circus troupe.

Olga Kaleta (Head of Youth Circus, NoFit State) looks back on the project: “Its been a fantastic experience for everyone involved. We're all so inspired and excited for the future. What a joy to be able to look back at this amazing project! I'm really proud of our youth for fully engaging with all the aspects of the project. I'm confident to say that the project has changed the way they think about the circus and its history. All different aspects of the project meant that a large number of young people were able to benefit from the activities.”
Celebrating the end of an exciting project exploring the history of Welsh circus, NoFit State’s talented Youth Circus Students have released a short documentary. The 13 minute film condenses their 9-month journey, taking you with them as they delve into the history archives, learn lost circus skills, visit the big-top tent, and imagine what the future of circus might hold ; all in the lead up to a spectacular performance. Watch their journey here: [VIDEO: https://youtu.be/UWg_2CaevjM]
Keith Chaplin (Youth Circus Parent): “It was wonderful to watch my daughter grow throughout the project. I was impressed with the way that it encouraged her to link artistic creativity, intellectual enquiry, and historical understanding to her physical development, and most importantly, to do it while having loads and loads of fun.”
This film is part of the UK-wide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of British circus. It documents the progress of Youth Circus Students as they look at the unique Welsh contribution to the development of circus. The film shows students scouring the archives, taking talks from circus experts, having a go at forgotten circus skills and putting on their own circus show, all whilst learning video production techniques. They interviewed each other to record their progress, with their footage included in the final documentary edit.
Kaiya (Youth Circus Student): “It was a great experience filming behind the scenes of our show. It was amazing learning how to handle the camera correctly as well as playing with the camera angles to get different outcomes. I would love to experiment on using a camera in Circus again for personal reasons, such as filming routines and taking pictures of new moves. It was a lot of fun!”
Richard Bellamy (Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Wales) said, “Circus: 250 Years Young is an excellent example of how they can get involved, take decisions, develop new skills and interests, connect with their communities and have fun.” Seventeen NoFit State Youth Circus students, aged 11-18 and from all over Cardiff, participated in the recording of the documentary. They received support and training from digital engagement and regeneration agency, ProMo Cymru along the way. Arielle Tye (Communication and Media Manager, ProMo Cymru) noted that, “In today's world digital skills are hugely important for a young performer. Learning how to tell stories, promote themselves and use video as an art form will help with their development as artists.”
51
Kate Parry (Community Programme Manager, NoFit State): “This has been such a worthwhile project - the journey has been a visible catalyst for the development of those who took part as artists and performers which was very rewarding to see. Understanding where we have come from is very important in understanding ourselves in the present and where we might go in the future. I think the practical and theoretical exploration of circus history in this project has been an enriching process for everyone that took part and has impacted on how they now interact and engage with circus.”

“And Another Thing…….”
By Vince Nolan
the jelly babies have got whiplash An intriguing title I think you will agree. Once upon a time, on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, the Sainted Mother-In-Law received tragic news about the untimely death of her Brother. Being understandably upset, we suggested she join us for brunch (as she hadn’t suffered quite enough) and she duly managed to polish off a sizeable portion of traditional victuals. The plan was then for her to return home and for us to pick her up en route to the rugby club to watch the guys play, and of course to take her mind off matters. That was until she decided to smash her car into a wall on the way back to her house. Road closed, Fire and Police but a two hour wait was required for an Ambulance that day, even for a road traffic accident. We immediately acted in quasi-paramedic mode. The Current Mrs Nolan used her legendary diplomatic skills with the local Health Board as the following 10 hours were spent watching the circus that has become Accident and Emergency Departments. Numerous handcuffed and Police escorted ne’er-dowells were treated ahead of injured OAP stunt drivers which was wrong on so many levels.
were on her front seat at time of impact (other soft sweets are also available). Alas they were thrown violently forward and are now suffering from whiplash. The insurance implications of this could be interesting. The good news is that the M.I.L. is back on the road, licensed to thrill and is driving a bright red car which we have christened Scarlet O’Cara. Same hospital and still jogging or hopping along with the hip replacement story. I attended a “fitness for operation” clinic to ensure I was well enough to be attacked by a masked stranger with a sharp knife. I am, but we still don’t know when. Part of the procedure means I will be recycled. The hospital keeps a “Bone Bank” for people needing bone grafts. As a result I will now be both a blood donor and a bone donor. How about that for green credentials? The NHS is brilliant at times and not so good at others, sometimes in the same week and at the same hospital. (I know the Humerus is the arm but pictures of hip bones scare me).
Long story short, the M.I.L. is made of tough stuff and suffered shock and bad bruising. Her car and the wall were not so lucky and have both since shuttled off this mortal coil. However, the greatest tragedy of all was the bag of Jelly Babies which
Having said this, who’s the nicest chap in the hospital? The “ultra sound” guy. Who stands in for him when he’s on leave? The “hip” replacement guy.

Let us discuss the non-event that has become the row surrounding the renaming of the Second Severn Crossing. It has been decided by the UK Government, in discussion with our First Minister, to rename the bridge “The Prince Of Wales Bridge”. I had no strong feelings either way about this until a number of parochial one-eyed Welsh politicians and their supporters started to object about the lack of consultation within Wales and that it should be

named after some famous son or daughter of Wales. Tommy Cooper or Shirley Bassey one assumes. There are numerous facts which seem to have been strangely ignored by the protestors: • We live in a Principality. • Prince Charles inaugurated the bridge in 1996. • It has been operated by Highways England ever since then who have been responsible for its upkeep. Had Wales demanded a slice of the running costs then we might have a say in the naming now. • Most of the bridge is not in Wales. • 32,000 (at present) have signed a petition to prevent this happening, or 1% of the Welsh population.
Anyway, every time my bike hurts me, I punch it right back. It’s a vicious cycle. Is it me or are there too many companies around at present with bizarre names like Schpock, Splosh, Giff Gaff, Zippet, Vinted, Wowcher etc? Oh please. Yet more examples of the mangling of our beautiful language. I have come up with some alternative companies of my own: • Tosh – Purveyors of utter rubbish. • Bish Bash Bosh – Cockney purveyors of worse rubbish than Tosh. • Cloche – Only sell French hats (look it up). • Posh – Only sell to wealthy people. • Dosh – The opposite of Posh. Moneylenders, at a competitive 1395% APR. • Awash – The owners of the aforementioned Dosh who can now afford to buy from Posh and Cloche. In an unrelated topic, this month’s doppelgangers are Welsh Rugby International George North and actor Nicholas Hoult.
I am not a Royalist by any means, (although the alternative scenario of a President would be much worse), but since we were not responsible for operating the bridge, which is not really in our Country, then to have it bear our Prince’s name is quite a coup, wouldn’t you say? Staying with things Welsh, is “Whodunnit?” a good title for a Welsh crime thriller? Can somebody please explain to me the latest craze of teenage boys doing random wheelies on their mountain bikes? I am fed up with driving behind them and giving them a wide berth as I know what is coming next. They all seem to ride along merrily and then for no apparent reason and without warning, one of them pulls a wheelie. The next thing they are all doing one. Frankly this is all a bit lacking in imagination. I am not suggesting any of them copy the guy in the picture below but it does sort of
Seen on the side of a plumbers van: “A flush is better than a full house.” Staying with the subject I read that Michael and Angelo were brothers who painted the Cistern in the Chapel or something like that. I could be wrong. A Bientot Mes Amis.

THE CURE FOR HIRAETH By Sara John
Two summers ago we were living comfortably and happily in Edinburgh, my husband’s home city, when I began to feel not quite right. Not quite right in the head or in the heart. ‘When did this shivery/ chilliness/silliness/lump in the throat feeling start?’ I said to myself, ‘Was it a virus? A shock? An infection?’
I checked with my doctor that nothing was actually wrong with me and got a clean bill of health from him. But at a meeting of the Edinburgh Welsh Society Dr. Heti Evans, a descendant of the Physicians of Myddfai pointed out to me that what was wrong with me was obvious. Obvious to her anyway.
Thinking back over the previous years in our new Scottish home, it all started I recall, after attending a concert performed by The Treochy Male Voice Choir, in the Murrayfield Rugby Stadium Clubhouse to raise money for the Wooden Spoon Charity for children.
It was Hiraeth I was not ill at all, I was homesick! There was only one safe and lasting cure; no medicine; action. We phoned our local estate agents. We investigated the housing market in the Cardiff area. We contacted removal firms. I began to feel better.
Considering it now, of course, as a Rhondda raised - girl I should not have risked going to that concert after being exiled from Wales for six years, five hundred miles away from proper tenors.
The background music to this is, of course, John Denver singing “Country Roads take me home to the land I adore--.”
The performance was a knock-out! Most of the audience had never been exposed to a Welsh Wall of Sound before and they were physically blown back by the opening item, Men of Harlech, especially the ones sitting down the front.
After selling in Scotland we rented in Porthcawl for six months so that we could do a proper house hunt. It was summer 2016 and we lived like two of Enid Bylton’s Famous Five; wearing shorts, tee shirts and sandals, carrying enough money for newspapers, ice creams and coffees. The weather was mild and sunny and occasionally wonderfully hot. The light was brilliant, more golden and less blue than further north. Here the sun sets in the proper place that I had always been used to, that is, over the sea to the west, not over the hinterland as on the east coast of Scotland.
Phil Spectre eat your heart out. Further exposure to the Land and Sound of My Fathers (and mothers) came with the visit of Cor Meibion Caerdydd to the Murrayfield Rugby Club just prior to a Scotland V Wales rugby game. Another outstanding concert.

The levels of noise in every café, at every bus stop, at concerts in the Pavilion and on the street, was continuous and at full volume. If you want to know something, you just ask, for example:
One Saturday morning in the One-Stop Shop on the sea front the man in front of me in the queue had staggered to the counter carrying five two litre containers of milk, six large packets of chocolate Hobnobs, and four giant party packs of crisps (assorted flavours). The man behind the counter, with a totally straight face enquired, “Down for the day is it?”
“Do you know if David Davies still lives in Park Street, they used to call him Dai-Dave-Park.” Answer : “Which Dai-Dave-Park do you mean? Him or his son? His boy, David is called Dai-Dave-Park-Two.”
Now peacefully settled in Whitchurch, it takes a while to do any errands. And for the best of reasons. People talk to you here, it takes time, there are exchanges of views, everyone you meet is a fully paid up selector for the Rugby Internationals so there is much to discuss. To me it feels warm, safe, familiar and above all welcoming.
“When is high tide then?” Answer : “Same as yesterday but a bit later on.” I went into the pet shop in John Street and asked the lady behind the counter for worm treatment for my cat. Answer : “Do you want the drops to rub on the skin or the tablets they spit out?”
I have come back to what the writer Gwyn Thomas described when he returned to Wales after living in London for some years. “It is like getting back in a warm bed.”
When my husband was buying his copy of The Guardian in the busy shop on the Esplanade the lady waiting behind him said helpfully and for all to hear, “I have a friend who reads The Guardian.”
My Hiraeth has completely disappeared.

wyevale garden centres reveals:
gardening jobs for the month of may
With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, it’s a busy time for gardeners putting in preparations for a beautiful summer garden. Seeds should be sown, vegetables and flowers should be planted, and lawns should be given some tender loving care to ensure they are looking luscious and well-nourished for sunny days spent outdoors.
which means they will be able to withstand the drier months ahead.
Patrick Wall, buyer of box bedding, hanging baskets and planted containers at Wyevale Garden Centres, shares his gardening jobs of the month, helping you to get one step closer to your dream garden:
2. Full of beans Start sowing runner, dwarf and climbing French beans. All beans appreciate a rich, deep, well-drained soil in a sunny position, so before sowing make sure you dig over your plot to clear any rocks and large stones, and dig in a good amount of compost or well-rotted farmyard manure to encourage the beans to grow.
1. Prep your pots Plant up your outdoor pots and summer hanging baskets, but keep them in a greenhouse or porch for a few weeks to establish, before putting them outside. Establishing the plants encourages roots to grow out and increase their drought tolerance
3. Quench crops’ thirst Now that the weather is warming up it’s important to water thirsty crops such as

tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes regularly. Make sure that the soil or compost stays moist but is not waterlogged and take care to water the ground around the plant and not the leaves.
6. Love your lawn Apply nitrogen-rich summer feed to your lawn to encourage leafy growth. May is the best time of year to do this as the longer daylight hours and warmer soil create the perfect conditions for the grass to grow. Always fertilise your lawn after mowing to avoid disturbing the fertiliser on the surface.
4. Mulch beds and borders Not only does mulching lock in the soil’s moisture and improve its texture, it also works to supress weeds. By covering the soil with mulch, weed seeds struggle to come into contact with the soil when they land; this, combined with their deprivation of light means they cannot germinate and are prevented from growing. Make sure you apply enough mulch (around 2-3 inches) and ensure that the mulch is not pushed too closely up against your plants.

5. Watch out for pests! It’s important to check plants regularly for pests. Pay close attention to shoot tips to check for pests, such as capsid bugs, as well as the underside of leaves which can attract aphids, mealy bugs, red spider mites and thrips. There are plenty of ways to ward off those unwanted pests in an eco and wildlife friendly way without causing damage to your plants.

are able to take out of it whatever they like and at the same time harness their energy. There are so many differing sports available for our young people these days, but many of them focus on their own specific sport, which can make them seem elitist. DanceFit Cardiff offers a unique opportunity to cater for those who do not consider themselves to be 'sporty' but who can enjoy themselves in their own style and ability and achieve levels of fitness, while at the same time, being surrounded by their favourite music. It has the added advantage of taking them away from their phones, tablets, computers and the other aspects of modern social media for a few hours and developing lasting friendships from their dance classmates.
You may remember that I wrote about my family's visit to Blackpool to support my young granddaughter's dance group and three other groups from her dance school in the semi finals of a national dance competition. A great time was had by all, despite only two of the four groups from Cardiff getting through to the finals which were to be held in Liverpool in March. Much excitement all round with plans being made to support the two successful Cardiff groups at the National Finals.
Since its early days of three classes per week, catering for eighty children at Melin Gruffydd School, it now has 250 pupils in nearly forty after school classes, as many as four or five times each week, plus open community classes and school holiday courses. Working out of schools and community centres throughout the city, DanceFit Cardiff is open to boys and girls, between the ages of three years up to eighteen years of age, through the mediums of both Welsh and English. It is so enjoyable and appealing to the mums (and perhaps dads?) that, shortly, adult classes will be starting.
However, much to everyone's disappointment, travel from Cardiff to Liverpool was made impossible on the day by that very unusual British winter phenomenon, SNOW!! I had hoped to be able to write about a Cardiff success at these prestigious dance Championships, but it was not to be. Better luck next year when the two groups who had got to the final have been guaranteed places to compete. Instead, let me turn your thoughts to the wonderful dance school right on your doorstep that is achieving great things among the children of Cardiff.
All the coaches have a high level of expertise in their chosen activity, ensuring quality learning experiences for all those involved. All the coaches are also DBS checked and first aid trained, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all. Unlike many other clubs or classes, there is no weekly, quarterly or annual 'joining' fee. You simply pay for each class on the night, and your child can dip in or out of the class as it suits them/you.
DanceFit Cardiff is an organisation that was born in September 2013, the brain child of Holly Parker, a fitness and dance instructor who had the vision to improve the fitness and well being of our young people through the medium of dance. Holly realised that the idea of conventional dance classes was unlikely to appeal to every youngster, girls or boys, and decided to make the dance routines fun by incorporating modern styles, such as. street dance and contemporary dance, tumbling, beat ball and football. By mixing the dance styles and including some more gymnastic moves to a beat of chart music, it seemed to cater for the tastes of the individual youngsters who

cardiff 10k aiming to hit record high
of spectators, which will most certainly help make this race day one to remember.
After a record breaking 2017 which saw 8,000 runners take to the streets of the capital, The Nation Radio Cardiff 10K & 2K Family Fun Run, powered by leading Welsh charity Kidney Wales, will be returning on Sunday 2 September 2018 for its biggest year yet.
Professor Roy J Thomas, Chief Executive of Kidney Wales, who has been organising the annual race for the last 33 years, said: “The Cardiff 10K is Kidney Wales’ flagship fundraising event, known for its magnificent race day atmosphere, created by the local community supporting the event. It’s always a happy occasion and everyone has a great day, whether they are competing in their first 10K, looking for a personal best or running with their family in the 2K family race.”
Due to the overwhelming demand, the capacity has been increased with over 10,000 people expected to take on the fast, flat and fun course this year. What better way to take in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks! This years route will pass the impressive Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama building, City Hall, the historic Cardiff Castle and one of the most well known stadiums around, The Principality Stadium.
Race organisers Kidney Wales are recruiting runners to join Team KW as an individual or a community team. All runners who opt to run for Kidney Wales will receive a running t-shirt/vest and a fundraising pack. Every penny raised will help the charity continue their life changing work supporting the 10,000 people across Wales living with Kidney Disease.
Since the launch of the race in 1986 with just a couple of hundred runners, the Cardiff 10K has developed to be a key event in our nations calendar; growing in numbers and raising an incredible amount of money in support of race organisers Kidney Wales and other good causes.
Entries are now open, prices start from £22.50 for an individual and just £5.00 for the 2K Family Run. So gather your friends, family and colleagues and register for your place now at cardiff10k.cymru. Entries are expected to sell out in record time, so get in quick! For more race news and updates find us on Facebook - Cardiff10kCaerdydd or twitter & Instagram @Cardiff10K .
There is something for the entire family, with the option of taking part in the 2K Family fun run at 9.15am prior to the main 10K race at 10am. Make sure you arrive nice and early to soak up the incredible race day atmosphere within the race village at the Civic Centre. It will be jam packed with entertainment for all, refreshments and thousands
