At the end of last month the whole of the UK went into panic mode about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). The ICO website crashed several times with what seemed like half of the UK population trying to register their businesses before the deadline date. Up until a couple of months ago many businesses hadn't even heard about GDPR, and to be honest it has been poorly promoted and communicated. Even now most of the general public do not know what it stands for. Like Brexit, we'll have to wait to see how these new data protection regulations unfold. Our son celebrated his 10th Birthday at Team Sport (a go-kart racing centre just off Newport Road) in May. We highly recommend it for group events and children’s parties. It's a little on the pricey side but it's great fun for young and not so young alike! We were blessed with the most glorious weather in May. Having said that, it is raining right now as I write, but the garden does need a watering, so I'll forgive it. Staying with the weather, we are now well into the cricket season and both our children play cricket for Cardiff CC, which is great for Mark and myself spending hours outdoors watching. The only downside is that the housework piles up, but hey ho, there's more important things in life than polishing and hoovering! Lastly, we'd like to wish our longest serving writer Vince Nolan a speedy recovery after undergoing a hip operation last month. Due to GDPR we can't pass on the details of his home address (which I’m sure he’s pleased about!) but you are very welcome to send your good wishes to our facebook/twitter or email address. Until next month, may the good weather continue, and happy reading.

LOCAL CARE HOME BRINGS THE ROYAL WEDDING TO CARDIFF

Excited residents at a Cardiff care home had front-row seats at their own mock wedding to celebrate the Royal marriage. Tŷ Llandaff, a private nursing, residential and respite care home in Conway Road, Pontcanna, brought the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last Saturday to life for their residents by staging a fictitious ceremony in one of their luxury lounges. The fake wedding brought staff and residents together as they acted out the different roles. The bride, senior carer Jo Western, was walked down the aisle by two gentlemen residents, Norman Bennett, 90, and Daniel Rosewell, 102. The groom was played by carer Jason Howells. In an amusing twist, the entertaining maintenance support manager, Ralph Evans, unleashed his feminine side to play the chief bridesmaid. Guest singer Jackie Webbe, wearing a stunning Union flag dress, added a sense of occasion to the day with a beautiful selection of songs. Although the wedding did not have quite the media attention of Prince Harry and

Meghan’s wedding, TV cameras filmed the event and it was later shown on ITV Wales. Following the ceremony, residents were treated to a range of delicacies and a slice of wedding cake made by Tŷ Llandaff’s head chef Barry White and his team. Tŷ Llandaff care home manager Janice Evans said: “There was so much excitement in the home about the Royal wedding, so we thought it would be lovely for the residents to have a little pre-wedding event. Everyone was delighted to have the chance to be so closely involved, remember their own weddings, anticipate the royal wedding, and also have a bit of a giggle at the same time. “We were delighted to welcome our guest singer Jackie Webb whose songs just added the perfect touch. There was a real buzz around the home about the event and the residents had a great time.”

‘The Hall’ is a brand spanking new observational comedy written by emerging Welsh playwright Claire Erasmus. Claire, who is a trainer at the RWCMD, has recently enjoyed working with the Directors cut theatre in London, and is thrilled to be bringing her London cast to The Tramshed, for a night of raucous laughter. Set in a Miners Welfare Hall threatened with closure, the comedy centres around the relationship and often hilarious revelations of three Mams – Shaza , Lisa and Mel, who meet weekly to pick up their kids and who share (far too much!) during idle chit chat . “Simply hilarious comic writing “ Andrew Hollingsworth Artistic Director Buckleup Theatre London. So what’s on trend in 2018? I always hate this question as I cannot give just one answer, as there are normally around 10 trends at one time that are becoming popular. So let’s have a look into a few options shall we... somewhere in our shop.

Ice Cream Pastels; So we are not just saying hello to Blush Pink but also her other mates such as Minty Green, Perfect Peach and Powder Blue. Mix these altogether and you can create the perfect Knickerbocker glory sundae in either your kitchen or more casual living space. If you worry that this trend may have you feeling a bit sick and you would rather stay with your classic trusty Rum N Raisin or vanilla wall colour then this is also fine too.

Moody Tropical Prints;

Monochrome; Black and white, don’t think I really need to say anymore on this one really. Ok well I can as this will never go out of fashion or get boring and works with every colour. It’s easy to add to if you feel a bit of a zing coming on and fancy a burst of colour. Monochrome diagonal wallpapers are set to be a big thing this year, so think herringbone and chunky chevrons. Being such a dramatic look, you can reduce it down to a back wall behind the toilet in a cloakroom or an off set strip down one wall in your living room. Cost effective and also very effective.

Navajo Nation; This ethnic desert like feel in your living room trend is probably going to be one of my favourites for this summer. Again this is a very lovable trend that can be incorporated in smaller pieces of furniture, e.g. footstools, cushions or a lovely Berber Rug. If you’ve already got Teal or Petrol blues in your living room then it’s easy to just update with splashes of Orange and accents of pinks. A great fabric collection to look at for this look is Style Library’s, Harlequin range and newest collection which includes the fabric book Zapara. I will definitely be displaying the Bora design

Yes these are still around for a little longer but growing up, slightly. So meet the teenage tropical print, it’s darker and moodier and doesn’t know if it wants to brighten your home or be that little bit more emotional and on edge. This is actually a more liveable print for me personally and will slot in nicely with these more earthy tones. Add dark browns and blacks with these softer emerald and mossy greens and don’t forget some real plants to bring some life into your space.

Library Shelving; Take it to the ceiling! Floor to ceiling shelving will keep your eye concentrated on the height of the room or make a room feel deceptively higher. It cleans away a lot of hoarded books and makes you look really intelligent. I have recommended these for storage ideas for clients that just need to either create more colour in a very white space or to free up some storage. This is a brilliant idea for keeping your books in an area that you may be more likely to read from but also great aesthetically too.

Gen Z yellow...also known as the new millennial pink; So this colour is huge in almost all sectors of the trend world. Fashion and beauty get the first hit and then it comes along to Interiors. I’m not sure how long this colour will be around but you can definitely see it working with a lot of other colours. It’s almost a buttercup kind of yellow. It has some softness and warmth to it so doesn’t feel too harsh to play around with.

heddwch? By Wyn Evans with an Investiture Mug, sporting a glazed picture of Carlo. In my school, Lakeside Junior, each child was to walk on stage-left, stride to mid-stage where the Head Teacher (one Mr Dawkins, I believe) would shake our right hand while giving us our mug with his left. Then we would walk off stage-right. That morning, mam had instructed me that I was to shake the Head's hand, refuse the mug, say "no thank you sir; he's not my prince", then walk off. Had she but recalled a recent school eisteddfod mam would have remembered that I was painfully shy when asked to stand out from the crowd. One of the national eisteddfod's oldest rites is the ceremony of partly unsheathing the Grand Sword. The Arch-Druid (in this case, seven year old me) would ask the following questions and the audience (schoolmates) would reply 'Heddwch' (Peace) three times(3): • 'Y Gwir yn erbyn y Byd, A oes Heddwch?' (The Truth against the World, Is there Peace?); • 'Calon wrth Galon, A oes Heddwch?' (Heart to Heart, Is there Peace?); • 'Gwaedd uwch Adwaedd, A oes Heddwch?' (Shout above responding Shout, Is there Peace?). I froze. Instead of enacting my Arch-Druidic duties, I walked off the stage and went to hide behind the piano. So it was another disappointment to mam that, come the Investiture, I shook Mr Dawkins' hand, accepted the mug and walked off stage-right without saying a thing. I later gave the mug away to a girl from my class. I'd intended telling mam that I'd done as she had asked but knew I was as bad a liar as I was an Arch-Druid, so I came clean. Cue much disappointment all round.

Hush now. Do you hear it? A subterranean rumble? That's my republican, nationalist parents turning in their graves. The Boss, The Girl (my twelve year old daughter, who happens to have Down Syndrome), and I are sitting watching the marriage of Harry Windsor and Meghan Markle. Mam and dad held no personal animus against the Mountbattens, though they always referred to the Queen as 'Betty Sourpuss', and Prince Phillip as 'Phil the Greek'; the Queen Mother was the 'gin tippler', and Prince Charles either 'Carlo' (after the eponymous song by Dafydd Iwan(1)) or 'that bloody man'.

Neither nationalism nor republicanism could induce me to tell The Girl that she was not to watch Harry and Meghan's ceremony. For the record, she thought the little page boys and bride's maids were 'cute', that her Flower Girl dress was much nicer than their dresses, and that the horse-drawn carriage was 'cool'. It's funny how my own take on these things has changed as I have aged. Now, I approve of Head of State being largely a ceremonial role and reckon that the royals are ideally placed to perform it. We all know that if it was an elected post Blair would have coveted it, and then Brown would have sulked until he had his turn, only for Corbyn to usurp the process and claim to be the 'Anti Head of State'. And don't get me started on the Lib Dem and Tory candidates: Paddy Ashdown anyone? Jacob Rees-Mogg? Boris?!

Their republicanism militated against their accepting a Head of State drawn from a ruling family. Ideally, they would have had an elected Head of State - provided that the late Gwynfor Evans was the person elected! Their nationalism insisted that any Head of their State would have to be Welsh. Llywelyn Ein Llyw Olaf they regarded as a national role-model; 1282 still resonated; and as for Edward I decreeing that future kings' heirs apparent would be known as the 'Prince of Wales'(2)? Well that would never do. In 1969, the investiture of Charles Windsor as Prince of Wales in Caernarfon was like a red rag to my parents' bull. All schoolchildren were to be presented

the British Nuffield council "bends over backwards to try to justify a National DNA-screening program for Down Syndrome while excluding various other disabilities and gender"(6). Again, quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Down Syndrome is where this starts. The test can or will probably be used to detect just about any and every feature or condition. Autistic spectrum? Depression? Sexuality even? Who can predict where it will end? Thus, I no longer accept that the first, last, and only words relevant to abortion are "a woman's right to choose". Noting that there were over 190,000 abortions in England and Wales in 2016, Tim Stanley continues: "the nations that have legalised abortion have in fact expanded the right to choose who lives and who dies, and the outcome is patently unjust."

Time has matured me in other ways too. On Friday 25th May Ireland voted on whether or not to scrap the eighth amendment to its constitution, which outlaws almost all abortions. When you read these words you'll know the outcome. Some say it's more a vote on where Irish people can have abortions (Éire or England). But as columnist Tim Stanley notes: "Irish voters are being forced to confront something that most societies have left up to politicians and judges to consider: the realities of abortion. The decision they face is at once intensely personal and awesome in its societal consequences."(4) This continues to concern the Down Syndrome community in the UK and across the world. I've written here before about the roll-out of NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing), which was introduced to health care in 2011. Mother and campaigner Renate Lindeman explains: "NIPT can potentially analyze the entire genome of the unborn child, but countries are increasingly opting for a targeted approach. This means that commercial companies, health authorities and policymakers are targeting specific genetic conditions while prohibiting the prenatal selection of other groups. Down syndrome is such a target. It is treated as a ‘disease’ that can be eradicated through screening and ‘prevented’ by selective abortion."(5)

NIPT could be about information sharing, preparation for a new birth, and building a supportive community for would-be mums and dads with their kids; but at present it is more about aborting babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The abortion debate itself needs to be more than a battle in the sex wars (as Tim Stanley writes, "not to try to control women but to imagine a society in which they can afford to be mothers, in which all of humanity is sacred") and it needs to be informed by all of us, just as the debate in Ireland on the 8th Amendment is being worked through by the whole population. Then may the lion lay down with the lamb.

But who gets to decide what conditions are incompatible with our common humanity? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes - who watches the Watchmen? The Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD) sets down their human rights as full and equal members of society. I should have written "OUR rights as full and equal members of society", since so many of us are born with or develop disabilities. The Netherlands has singled out Down Syndrome as the primary target of its National screening program. There, NIPT is offered, unsolicited, to all pregnant women. The percentage of babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome who are aborted is as follows: Iceland 100%; Denmark 98%; UK 90%; France 77%; US 67%.

'Y Gwir yn erbyn y Byd, A oes Heddwch?' 'Calon wrth Galon, A oes Heddwch?' 'Gwaedd uwch Adwaedd, A oes Heddwch?'

It's good that abortions on grounds of the sex of the baby are ruled out in the UK (although this form of discrimination has been rife in India and China). And

is pain-free hair removal possible? For many women, the summer sun means a season of continual hair removal, with constant waxing or shaving to ensure fuzz-free limbs. In fact, in a recent survey by market analysis company Mintel, 73% of women felt under pressure to remove body hair and only 8% had not de-fuzzed in the past year.

4: cool down afterwards

Mintel’s survey also shed light on the top areas for hair removal for women, with legs coming out top at 82%, followed by the underarms and bikini line. Even our upper limbs can be a source of concern with 15% of women wanting hair-free arms.

5: research the latest pain-free options

Chilled aloe vera lotion or ice packs can help cool down the treatment area after your session. At the Specialist Skin Clinic we also use air cooling devices which ensure minimum discomfort after laser hair removal procedures.

The Soprano laser system offers pain-free laser hair reduction and its latest award-winning device is the ICE Platinum which takes patient comfort to the next level. The hair follicles are heated very gradually, with no damage to the surrounding tissue. At the same time, the device utilises an innovative cooling technology called IN Motion® that cools the treatment area.

The drawbacks of waxing and shaving are well-known, with rashes, ingrown hairs and the constant cycle of hair regrowth to contend with, which is why more and more women are turning to permanent laser hair reduction. However, one concern that often holds women back is how painful it is likely to be.

It’s also quick; the large spot size of its 810nm wavelength means that the treatment can be performed in half the time.

5 tips on how to achieve a pain-free laser hair removal procedure:

So, if you’re sick of another summer of waxing or shaving, then it’s time to consider laser hair removal. And one of the many advantages of Soprano ICE Platinum’s trio clustered diode technology is that it can be performed on tanned skin, so you don’t have to wait until summer is a distant memory.

1: take some pain relief If you’re anxious about your procedure being painful, it can often be a self-fulfilling prophecy, as stress can affect your ability to regulate or perceive pain. Taking over-the-counter pain relief in advance can help to take the edge of and ensure you’re relaxed and comfortable during your procedure.

For more information or to book an appointment for pain-free laser hair removal, call the Specialist Skin Clinic on 02920 617690 or go to our website: www.specialistskinclinic.uk

2: ask about numbing cream A topical local anaesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to your procedure to numb the area, so speak to your practitioner, although the latest pain-free devices mean that this isn’t necessary.

3: avoid IPL Many patients who have had uncomfortable hair reduction experiences in the past, have actually undergone Intense Pulsed Light or IPL, which is often described as like the snapping of a rubber band. Individuals have differing pain thresholds and it often depends on the area being treated, but many patients find IPL very uncomfortable.

Whitchurch Tennis Club Is The Place To Be This Summer! Usually Wimbledon fortnight is the time when budding tennis players dust off their racquets and look for a place to play. Why not start early this year and as John McEnroe said, “Let the racquet do the talking.” The club is to be found in the heart of Whitchurch between St Francis Road and Heol-Y-Forlan and has been at its current venue for over a hundred years. Recently it has hosted a successful Great British Tennis Day and is looking forward to running Tennis For Kids. Launched by the British LTA in 2016, it is helping those between 4 and 11 years of age learn the valuable life skills of respect, team work, fair play and concentration as well as having fun at the same time under the supervision of a qualified LTA coach. Many children have benefitted over the years from Whitchurch Tennis Club’s second to none facilities. We have an extensive coaching programme for children and adults on 7 all-weather courts, during evenings and weekends. The club caters for children of all ages, including students, juniors, minis and tots as well as for adult playing and social members on its courts and in its clubhouse with fully licensed bar and kitchen; lounge and committee room; men’s, ladies’ and disabled facilities as well as a sun terrace and barbeque area. You don’t have to have any experience to join in. The club welcomes groups such as Cylch Meithrin and St Francis Road’s Neighbourhood Watch as well as primary and secondary schools from the area such as Whitchurch Primary, Melin Gruffydd and Coryton Primary as well as Whitchurch and Cathays High Schools. It also runs a number of ladies’ and men’s teams, which compete at a high level in South Wales Tennis Leagues and is known not just for its sporting prowess but its friendliness. Our full time coach, Melissa Davies, ensures that our junior members have a safe environment to play in. Her encouragement has seen youngsters successfully compete in grade 4/5 tournaments, mini-red and mini-orange tournaments as part of Tennis Wales’s provision in South Wales and is also available for adult individual or group coaching sessions. The club also runs many social events, showcasing local bands, quiz nights, cheese and wine evenings and American Tournaments followed by delicious food or strawberries and cream around Wimbledon fortnight, all prepared by our invaluable volunteers. The premises can also be hired out for private events (no 18th birthday parties, sorry!). Our membership fees for all classes are very competitive and excellent value for money. We offer family memberships where parents can play or not as they choose so, if you would like to try before you join, just come down any evening and experience the family-friendly club right on your doorstep.

How do you clean your ears?

Viney Hearing Care Introducing Micro-Suction

In my years of being a Hearing Audiologist, I have ben told many stories about what people clean their ears with - from the everyday cotton swabs and pens through to paper clips, hair grips, glasses arms and car keys. Nearly everyone is guilty of sticking something in their ears that they are not supposed to so I’m going to explain why the old wives tale ‘nothing smaller than your elbow’ is so true. By their very nature, our ears are designed to be both self-cleaning and self-protecting. That’s why by using the wrong cleaning methods, you risk causing injury to the ears, damaging your hearing or even causing infections. Earwax (also called cerumen) is necessary for the ear’s selfcleaning mechanism to work properly. Earwax is manufactured by glands in the skin of the outer ear canal, the hole through which sound travels to the eardrum. Earwax serves several important functions: it coats the skin of the ear canal, repelling water and helping to protect it against injury and infection; it also helps to keep the skin inside the ears from getting dry and itchy. In addition, earwax traps dust and & n io ct su Micro Check Day germs, keeping them from reaching the eardrum. Ear Health day Usually, you don’t need to Tues do anything to help this 17th July! natural cleaning process Call now es! unless you suffer from an Limited spac impaction that may have to 1 02920 25012 be removed. Trying to

forcibly remove the ear’s protective wax layer or stop an itch can damage the delicate skin of the ear canal or puncture the eardrum. This can increase your risk of infection and lead to a permanent hearing loss needing either surgery or a hearing aid to correct the impairment. So it is best to leave the inside of your ear alone and not disturb its natural environment. This means no cotton swabs, no fingers and certainly no sharp objects - keep your hair grips for holding your hair back and keep your car keys for unlocking your car! The ear canal is narrow and curved. Consequently some people are susceptible to getting blockages of wax, skin, foreign objects and debris from infection. If a blockage is present, you may notice your hearing seems dull, there may be a ringing sound in your ears or your ears may feel full, become itchy or ache. If this is the case, you will need to have it professionally removed. Although there are several methods to clean your ears such as syringing, sprays and drops, Microsuction is renowned as the most efficient and safest. It is highly recommended by GP’s, audiologists and ENT consultants. Microsuction of an ear canal is performed under direct vision using a microscope. The ear canal is cleared using gentle suction, proving to be the most effective way to clean the ears reducing all risks of infection.

cervical screening awareness week - get involved in the big screen By Natalie McCulloch

Calling all females! If you are going to make just one positive step this June - let it be this one

the topic of cervical smears and recognise the importance of these tests.

It will take you under 5 minutes to do it’s completely free .and it could save your life.

Why? 35% of all women are too embarrassed to attend due to body shape, 34% due to appearance of their vulva and 38% due to fear of smelling ‘down below’. A further 31% wouldn’t go if they hadn’t shaved the area, 35% if they had to take time off work and 16% if they had to miss a gym session!

Sounds good doesn’t it? And amazingly all it takes is a simple GP visit. So what is this all about? Cervical smear tests of course! Cervical screening is a somewhat ‘taboo’ topic of conversation in society and many women delay going for one or, even worse, avoid it completely. Shockingly, 1 in 5 women fail to attend their screening tests annually, despite it saving the lives of over 5,000 people a year! It may surprise you to know that women aged 25 to 35 are in the highest-risk group for cervical cancer. But whether you’re 25 or 65, in good health or not, it’s vitally important that you take the time to get this test done.

In fact, 30% of women asked didn’t even know where to get the test done! So why is it important that we act now to stop our society being screening shy? Approximately 3,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the UK alone and in 2014 it accounted for more than 2 deaths per day. However, when diagnosed at its earliest stage, around 95% of women with cervical cancer will survive their disease for five years or more, compared with 5% of women when diagnosed at the latest stage.

This June during ‘Cervical Screening awareness week’ (12-18th) we are being urged to talk about

Research suggests that not going for a screening is one of the biggest risk factors associated with developing cervical cancer and that 37% of cancers are preventable, largely through screenings. So, it really is worth taking the time to go and get yours done! The screening test is not a test for cancer, but a test to determine cell changes of

CT Health

the cervix which, if treated early, could lessen the risk of cervical cancer. Not bad for something that can take less time than making a cup of tea! So, what’s stopping you? Make getting your test done June’s priority. You should have received your invitation from your GP surgery to Attend. If you haven’t, just give them a call and enquire. After all, your health is important! Unsure if you need one? If you are a female aged 25-49 you are invited to attend a cervical screening at your GP practice every three years, and women aged 50-64 are invited to attend every five years. Make sure yours is up to date. If you’ve never been sexually active you can opt out of the test as your risk is lower, but you are still encouraged to attend.

The symptoms of cervical cancer aren’t always obvious, and it may not cause any symptoms at all until it’s reached an advanced stage. This is why it’s very important for women to attend all of their cervical screening appointments. On a final note, it is understandably an anxious situation for many – perhaps you’re wondering ‘will it hurt?’ or ‘what if they find something wrong with me?’ or ‘is it a waste of time to go to one unless I’ve got symptoms’. To put your mind at ease a little, the test is designed in such a way that it should be pain free and you’re welcome to bring someone along for support or discuss concerns with the nurse administering it. It is never a waste of time to prevent ill health. Also, it may be worth noting, that between 90 and 94% of all screening results come back normal, with no abnormalities found – surely it is better to know, gain support and act accordingly?

If you’re all up to date with your test – FABULOUS! Or equally if you’re a male reader – DON’T FRET – here’s how you can still make a difference. Don’t be afraid to talk about it or maybe even pop a poster up in a prominent place in your community to raise awareness. 1 in 20 women have abnormal cells, so if you consider your office/social group/residential area or local coffee shop where there may be 20 + women present, you can see the scope for this being of great importance and making a difference to one person if not more! Use social media to promote the awareness week – be a key player in encouraging people to put aside any embarrassment they feel in order to benefit from the long-term gain. You may want to share your own experience or simply spread the word of this awareness week.

If you want to know more about the screening process and the illness itself, or access support or free resources – please log onto: https://www.jostrust.org.uk today!

The Beauty Edit By Sarah-Jane Outten Regular readers will know me from my column featuring local businesses and charities. So, you will understand that my passion for writing is nothing new. However, you may not know that I am also a qualified makeup artist with a love for all things beauty related.

Cetaphill Daily Defence Moisturiser with SPF 50 Plus. Lightweight and easily absorbed, this is by far my very favourite moisturiser with protection. Not many moisturisers have as much protection and factor 50 is a real bonus, especially for those with fair skin. This product doesn’t block pores and it’s suitable for sensitive skin types. Highly recommended at £12.99. Nivea Urban Skin Defence Day Cream. This budget moisturiser leaves the skin feeling smooth and refreshed. Not only does it provide the skin with an SPF of 20, it continues to moisturise the skin for up to 48 hours. Priced at £5.29, you can’t go wrong!

Welcome to the June edition of The Beauty Edit. Summer is well and truly on the way, we have already enjoyed some beautiful May sunshine, I hope it is set to continue. While we make the most of the glorious sunshine, it’s vital that we look after and protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Most of us are used to slathering our bodies in sunblock by now, but we often forget our faces. If you have ever tried the combination of sunblock and make up, you will know that it doesn’t really work. The sunblock for our bodies is too thick in consistency for our faces. It leaves the skin feeling sticky and pores become blocked, leading to breakouts. This month, I checked out some moisturisers and foundations that include SPF protection. Here are a few of my favourites:

Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25 HR Foundation with Comfort Serum. This foundation is my absolute go to product. I use this throughout the year, as it’s simply a great foundation. It leaves the skin with a natural finish and glow, it isn’t drying or cakey. The added serum leaves my skin feeling smooth and radiant. It has an SPF of 20, it’s perfect. This product won’t break the bank either, priced at £8.99, it lasts 2 – 3 months.

Nutrogena Hydro Boost City Shield. This product contains an SPF of 25. It strengthens the skin’s natural shield and protects against harmful UV rays and pollution. It left my skin feeling refreshed and hydrated all day long. I suggest waiting about 5 minutes before applying foundation, just so the product has time to fully soak into the skin. Priced at £12.99, it’s a good buy with a great SPF. Max Factor Faceinfinty Compact Foundation. This little compact is perfect for your bag, or holidays. It comes with an applicator sponge, which is handy, but don’t forget to wash it regularly or use a brush instead. It has an SPF of 20, priced at £10.99 it’s a handy addition to your make up collection. Bare Minerals Original Foundation. I know that so many of you enjoy a mineral foundation, and Bare Minerals is a market leader. This foundation only has an SPF of 15, so I would suggest teaming it up with a moisturiser that contains a higher SPF – just to ensure the skin is protected. Priced at £28.00, it’s not a bargain, but it does last up to 4 months, depending on how often you use it. So there we have it, just a few suggestions to get you through the summer months and beyond!

A Taste of Italy: Pizza Express Keep it simple. Those are the words Pizza Express Founder Peter Boizot lived by and now, his restaurants do the same. These simple pizzas are great in quality and taste, thanks to a ‘secret’ dough recipe that’s kept the restaurant alive for over 50 years. Their foods are all named in Italian, after the imported ingredients to keep to the restaurant’s roots. From their menu, you can order pizzas with all kinds of toppings – onions, chilies, garlic, peppers, parsley, chicken, beef, olives, pepperoni and much more! For starters, there’s the famous Pizza Express Dough Balls with an option of three delicious dips: pesto, garlic butter and pestorissa, and harissa spiced tomato. With plenty of pastas, salads and wines to join your Italian-authentic meal in this Italian-authentic restaurant which, according to Boizot, is the only place in the UK where you can get good Italian pizza. Wyburn & Wayne Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are two of the city`s premier socialites, giving you their take on what`s hot in and around Cardiff!

Wayne: They certainly do, we laughed so much! Just brilliant! Also a personal highlight was the April Feria Spanish celebration at The Tramshed! Such a hoot, Paella & Sangria all night.. what more could you want! Congrats to Jose Dragon once again for pulling together an awesome event and we can’t wait for the next one! My nephew James got to play rugby for his school in the Principality Stadium which was awesome - I’m so proud! His team came second in the whole country!

Wyburn: Well the summer is well upon us now and we’ve been having some amazing weather already so fingers crossed! One of the best days of last month was when we had the pleasure of trying out the new SN-AP bus service now running from Cardiff to London. They’re a great premium service that utilises buses that would be unused most of the week (we were on the Swansea City football team’s) and takes about 3 and a half hours for a super cheap price. We found it really easy and super comfortable.

Wyburn: Ah I know, and to celebrate it I made him a portrait in mud, pleased he loved it and he should be really proud of himself! A huge event for me last month was working at making live art at Em-Con in Nottingham! Creating and presenting portraits to the likes of Buffy’s Nicholas Brendon & Emma Caulfield, Doctor Who’s Pearl Mackie & Billie Piper and the original great Power Ranger Jason David Frank!

Wayne: Yeah we’ll definitely be using them again. Whilst in London we did a Vlog showing how much you can do in a day. We watched Kinky Boots in the west end, went in the champagne pod on the London Eye, walked through Leicester Square and caught a boat up the Thames.. we did so much and made all the better by the awesome weather check out our Vlog on Facebook!

Wayne: Don’t forget Chris Rankin of Harry Potter Weasley fame... and the original Flash Gordon! It was a brilliant event and amazing to meet so many wonderful TV legends! The guys at Welsh Hearts put on another wonderful summer fete over at Llandaff rowing club, amazing turn out and a fun packed day again congrats to all involved and we should

Wyburn: One of the best attractions to visit Cardiff each year is ‘The Lady Boys of Bangkok’ touring show... each time they bring their A game and put on an epic night of entertainment.

hmp cardiff governor danny khan speaks exclusively to cardiff times Not giving up on improving an individual’s life chances is something that I have always believed in during my 36-years prison service career. As the governor of HMP Cardiff, this is something that I am working alongside my teams to bring to life through rehabilitative training and education activities inside of the prison.

Changing lives I had always wanted to be a public servant in a role where I felt that I could give back to society in some way, and as most of my family also followed similar career paths, it felt like a natural fit when joining HM Prison Service in1982. Back then the challenges were far different from today’s environment, but the aim is still the same, ‘to treat prisoners with humanity and help them lead law-abiding and useful lives in custody and on release’. This is something I have been able to achieve in every position I have held, as well as the ability to change people’s lives for the better.

manufacturing and horticulture. These opportunities help an individual develop specialised or soft skills, which could be something as simple as the ability to communicate and work with others effectively. Many of these vocational training schemes provide qualifications in specific trades and professions, which increases the opportunity of employment upon release. This in turn reduces the chances of an individual reoffending, allows someone to feel that they have a purpose in life and the ability to contribute to society in a positive way.

The truth is that the job of a prison officer is so much more than what many perceive it to be. We support individuals who are looking to rehabilitate and improve themselves – that could be through organising opportunities for them to gain new skills, providing specialist support or organising educational opportunities for someone who cannot read or write. This type of work is often hidden from view, behind the prison walls and bars.

We also run programmes such as ‘tools for change’ sessions, where prisoners are encouraged to recognise their own behaviours and emotions in specific situations – doing so means that they can better understand and control them in the future. Our rehabilitation work has also demonstrated a reduction in violence and drug taking in the prison, and ensures an individual’s time inside is used sensibly and productively.

Creating life chances As governor, my aim is to provide a safe, secure and decent environment for all, where prisoners can take part in a daily regime that promotes a purposeful and supportive day. We do this through creating meaningful educational and training opportunities while inside, including activities such as working partnership programmes on rail tracks, first aid courses,

A service I am proud of As for myself, I am a governor that is proud to have progressed through the ranks. Doing so has given

me the knowledge needed to develop a clear vision for HMP Cardiff. It also helps me really understand the challenges our officers face and how we can continuously improve experiences within a prison setting.

The reality is that all prison officers can help an individual in a similar way to what I did in this particular case. We are here to provide these types of life chances where individuals can provide and return something to society, which in turn creates a safer environment on the outside through reducing the chances of reoffending.

I have worked at many different prisons over the years – from starting out at HMP Wakefield to becoming a physical education officer at HMP Aylesbury. During this time, I am confident that I have made a difference to individuals in several different ways.

Building a team for the future Our work to create a safe and positive environment for prisoners at HMP Cardiff has really improved the morale of those who live and work inside of the prison. This makes it much easier to deliver our vision effectively and as part of one loyal and trusted team.

One experience that really stands out to me was working as a physical education officer at HMP Woodhill. I remember dealing with a distressed prisoner who was acting very volatile, having received a life changing injury prior to coming into custody. He was concerned about not being able to properly walk again, and was very angry with life in general and had lost sight of a possible future. I didn’t give up on him and spent time supporting his recovery by creating a remedial training regime, which eventually saw him begin to walk again, improve his fitness and participate in the regime of the prison. Years later I was training at a local gym outside of the prison and the individual walked up to me and asked if I could remember him from prison – he now owned the gym I was working out in. He said that without my support on the inside he would never have turned his life around for himself or his family.

For new recruits thinking of joining the service, my advice would be to show humanity and decency, and always be honest to all, which really goes far in terms of our rehabilitation agenda. Yes, there are bad days inside of any prison, but the truth is that a good day will always follow – a day where you go home feeling that you have made a difference. So be positive, be honest, be a team player, be supportive and always try to be the best you can be. Finally, don’t be afraid to bring new ideas to the table – I have done just that and built a career to be proud of in the prison service. The prison service is recruiting nationally and offers you a secure job and satisfying career, with great training, excellent benefits and the chance to change lives for the better. “And Another Thing…….”

By Vince Nolan

elton john’s car broke down so we got dolly parton instead our differing musical tastes the other evening over a chilled glass of Vimto. She reminded me that she was a big fan of a band called Depressed Mood or something like that. I am not familiar with their work but I have now tracked them down and they look older than me. Everything Counts in Large Amounts Gentlemen (I make small DM joke). Back to pubs. I am one of those old fashioned (or well-mannered) people who always bring their empty glasses back to the bar. Many do not and you know who you are. I would make it compulsory that you could not have a further drink unless you returned or recycled your previous glasses. In this way the bar staff would stay behind the bar thus enabling everyone to be served quicker. A further benefit would be that our hourly consumption rate of booze would then improve and we would start to become drink-fit in readiness for our summer holidays. It’s a “win win wine” situation.

Dear Seekers of the Truth, believe it or not, we overheard the above line recently during a factfinding mission to our local hostelry, The Dandy Highwayman. The fact-finding was to research what each of their real ales tasted like. Specialist work, as you will appreciate. Anyway, there we were, me and the Leader of The Opposition when I innocently enquired of the owner whether the previous weekend’s singer “Elton John” had been any good. Without batting an eye Mine Hostess said: “His car broke down so we got Dolly Parton instead.” That pub is just so show business.

Three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar. You can't tell me that's just a coincidence! I have been thinking about Gift Aid. You know, the income tax relief designed to benefit charities. This increases the value of your charity donations by 25%, because the charity reclaims the basic rate of tax on your gift – at no extra cost to you (are you following this?). All good stuff but it occurred to me that this should also be extended to the money we give to our kids. Irrespective of age, or where they live in the world, they still want money so what if we were able to confer charitable status onto our offspring and thus reclaim 25% in tax relief per donation. Might be on to something here fellow parent-donors.

The Current Mrs Nolan is a child of the 80’s and apparently was a New Romantic before we met, whatever that was. I suspect I was an old romantic or an unromantic. Nonetheless, we were discussing

Food colouring, now there’s a topic. I imagine it would be quite difficult to colour in food. As you know, fellow columnist Nathan Wyburn is a dab hand at creating fabulous portraits from food. I took a slightly different tack the other evening. The current Mrs Nolan is excused shopping and cooking duties in our house because I enjoy cooking and therefore need to source the raw

materials. I do nothing else around the house mind so it is still not really a fair division of labour but I do have a bad leg (well, I had one). Anyway, on the way back to Nolan Towers having picked She up from her arm-wrestling class, She enquired what was for tea? My response was “Orange.” Now this was not a clumsy attempt on my part to embrace Vitamin C. No my friends, we had “orange” which was salmon, carrots and swede mash. Very tasty but a strange lack of colour variation. Next up sweetcorn, butternut squash and corn-fed chicken. Or what about black pudding, seaweed and blackcurrants? Yum yum. This isn’t going to last is it?

• The tragedy of her dogs’ premature death had left the cleaner deverstated. • Sorry your husban iusnt very well. • She will return to work this evening form around 7. • Any issues or queries then please don contact us. The only positive to come from this drivel is that I have been able to use it in this artikcle. (I know).

Not relevant to food but a nice colourful picture nonetheless. Note the genius of the differing umbrella colours in the reflection.

Finally, I am able to report that my damaged hip is no more and it has gone to that great recycler in the sky. No general anaesthetic, no stitches to remove and four days with the delightful Orthopaedic Team at St. Woolos Hospital, Newport on the hottest weekend of the year so far. Many thanks to all of you my chums. Some of the recovery advice is good mind you: • “Week five: now you can do some dusting and push a vacuum round the middle of the living room; do a little meal prep (for yourself not the family), maybe fill and empty the washing machine.” Really? • “Week eight: Bed making and changing sheets, cleaning bedrooms etc., can wait until about now by which time, all things being well, you should pretty much start getting back to normal.” This is not normal. • “Week twelve: You will be able to play golf 12 weeks after the operation.” I couldn’t play before the operation so this is genius doctoring. I wonder if I can surf now as well?

Talking of colours, I have just found out I'm colour-blind. The diagnosis came completely out of the purple. I spent a short time in the Leader of the Opposition’s Office the other morning listening to her over a coffee when one of the decorators who is painting the outside of the building came in. He looked at us both and uttered the inimitable words: “Which one of you is Lorraine?” Now in her defence, she is a lot tougher than me, but I still look more like a rugby player than she ever has. The poor man should have gone to Specsavers. Time will tell how capable a short-sighted painter he really is.

Keep dancing friends.

Gawd help us. There should be a test before you start your own business. Like a reading, writing and spelling test. Again, staying with the Leaders Office,

THE BUS TO CARDIFF A return journey A typical mining valley

By Sara John

The Cardiff Bus. Even just the sight of it in the narrow Rhondda Valley streets in the 1950’s filled me with an air of excitement and anticipation.

According to my mother we were not allowed to stand up holding the horizontal rail across the front window. Children had to sit down, sit still, and stop talking. Apparently if any child was seen by the conductor doing any or all of those things, the bus would be stopped and you would be ejected. This could happen in Coed Ely, Talbot Green, Miskin or any of the other foreign parts on the way. I did not really believe all this but was not old enough or brave enough to disagree.

This and other memories of long ago came flooding back having recently returned to live in Cardiff after an absence of some years. I had been poorly with Hiraeth, the “longing for home” which affects many Welsh people who stray over the border or seas to other lands. So now, settled in Whitchurch, I was looking forward to my first trip into town for many years.

A few miles down the valley, past the Scotch Collieries in Llwynypia, through Tonypandy – “No riots today”, my father would say – up the long hill into Penygraig past the Naval colliery. Waste tips, terraced spotless houses, Victorian schools all built with the same materials to the same pattern, chapels of all sizes and denominations with the dates of consecration and subsequent additions on stone plaques, proudly, for all to see, especially for worshippers at other chapels. All these were viewed against a wonderful, mystical background of green hills, mountains to us of course. The bus stopped outside Woolworths in Penygraig. It must have been the smallest Woolworths in the world, it consisted of two terraced houses knocked through. To children it was still paradise even though our noses only reached the six inch glass barriers around the counters. The last Rhondda passengers got on the bus.

My mind drifted back to the mid and late fifties, living in the Rhondda Valley, when I was too young to travel on my own but old enough to have ‘aspirations’. I did not know then that was what they were called, but I did know that these were secret plans for when I was grown up. However, life in the Valleys for me as a child, was warm and safe; chapels had activities and meetings every evening; there was full employment; mothers rarely worked outside the home; school life was taken very seriously and there was music and opera, choirs, brass bands and oratorio for all. And libraries. By the late 1950’s life was getting better, more things in the shops, bomb sites being cleared, some rebuilding, less worried looks on faces, a little more leisure time and a little more spending money.

The bus turning right through Williamstown was suddenly entering a changed landscape. In those days Talbot Green was out in the country. The journey continued through the Vale then Llandaff, on past Llandaff Fields, - we are nearly there!, Finally, down Cathedral Road. Beautiful houses, huge trees and from Berthwin Street on, there were trolley buses. Passengers started gathering

So one warm sunny day my mother, father and I waited for The Cardiff Bus. It ran every hour and we travelled sitting on every child’s favourite: upstairs and in the front seats. Bliss. A big new red shiny double decker with Cardiff on the front and Rhondda transport on the side.

their bags and brollies and a queue formed ready to alight.

We went in the big shops, a hundred times the size of the Co-op in Tonypandy, we walked through arcades bustling with business, into the market which stills holds its magic today and its smells, of sawdust, meat, fruits, baking, fish, and, today wonderful spices.

“Oh look! Look! See the animals coming over the Wall.” “See the Castle.” “All those buses, all those people.” “Where is St Mary Street?” “Where do we get the bus back and what time would that be?” The patient conductor answered these questions ten times a day.

We went on to visit the castle and the Museum and had tea in the Cadena Café on Duke Street. Needless to say, having our afternoon tea, I was clearly instructed, frowned at, carefully supervised and threatened with life in an orphanage if I did something unsuitable. I was not told what was unsuitable. I did not ask. Through the first floor windows of the Cadena Café you could see the Castle Clock Tower. Fairly close up. I was mesmerised. Cakes and clocks.

We had had a journey through three very different worlds; the valleys, the vale and the city. All in an hour. But we were here. In Cardiff. At last. In Cardiff, people sounded different, they were hurrying along and everyone seemed to be minding their own business. It had been thought in the Rhondda in days gone by that you had to pay in Cardiff to go in the big shops.

I asked my father who all the other people were because when he used to take me out in the Rhondda he would speak to everyone, he knew everyone, everyone knew everyone. I thought that he would know who all these well dressed people were. He explained they LIVED in Cardiff. They did not go somewhere else in the evening. They lived in Cardiff. Again I added that as a wish to my own secret plans for being grown up.

Many believed you got very tired walking about in Cardiff because there was “no spring” in the pavements. If you wandered off, this applied to adults as well as children, you would never find your way back to the bus.

Slowly we made our way back to the Bus Station looking for a bus that said Treorchy on the front and Rhondda Transport on the side. I was very very tired. On the journey home to another planet, I tried to stay awake to enjoy looking out through the window but fell soundly asleep until I felt my father picking me up to carry me the few yards home from the bus top. Coal fires, the wireless with Children’s Hour, people you have known for ever and Welsh cakes in a big round tin in the pantry. In cold weather when I was small I was bathed in front of the fire. Then off to bed with Welsh woollen blankets and a feather mattress. Tales for another time perhaps? I think I will pop into town tomorrow. Coffee in the Kardomah, lunch in the Continental, on to Seccombes, Marments, Evan Roberts, Macross and end up in David Morgans. Entrance to the City Hall, Cardiff

If only.
