School is officially out for summer. There's plenty to do and see in our lovely city so keep your eyes peeled for the August Diary, Summer Features and adverts throughout the magazine this month. Our daughter couldn't wait for her first wobbly tooth to fall out. Unfortunately in her excitement however she swallowed it with some yummy iced gems. A second tooth came out a few weeks later and she did manage to put this one under her pillow. Luckily the tooth fairy remembered to come and was her usual generous self! The children received their end of year school reports last month and they couldn't have been more different if they tried. As I read one of the reports I couldn't help but think, is this really my child? They love sport, they're funny and confident but none of that was mentioned. The bit about talking too much was true though....I'll leave it there! The other made me shed a tear or two because of their personality and positive, kind attitude towards others. This means far more to me than academic excellence, and was reflected in the report. It's fair to say Mark and I are very proud parents. Both of our children took part in a play called The Colouring Book produced by Forge Drama in July. The show was performed in the YMCA on The Walk, Cardiff, which is perfect for small productions. I think I can vouch for all the parents by saying how amazing the performance was. The story, lyrics and music were all written by the Directors, with considerable assistance and input from the children via a series of workshops.

‘real tears’ By Wyn Evans are in the yard. K's mum and I strolled along behind them. Recently, they'd taken to sitting in each other's cars laughing and planning 'stuff'. ("What stuff?" "Just 'stuff' dad!")
Ch-ch-ch changes I have this minute completed the necessary online form to redirect our household mail. The Evans clan is moving from Ty Draw Road to, if all goes well, Rhydypenau Road. Not that we are going to do so in one efficient jump. Oh no. We thought we'd see a bit of Cardiff first and are adjourning to temporary accommodation close to Insole Court in Llandaff. That's what happens when you get your buying and your selling out of sync.
That evening went as per and they parted with a hug. The Girl and I walked on together and reached our car. Turning to me my wonderful daughter started crying; soft, gentle streams of tears with no noise at all. I took her in my arms and asked what was wrong. "I'm really going to miss Marlborough Primary school dad." I opened up the car and she climbed onto my lap behind the steering wheel. The crying deepened for about five or so minutes. All the while, I was quietly whispering the things you'd expect: that it is natural to feel loss; that it is happening because she is growing up and is ready for High school, where she will meet-up with friends old and new, etc.
Moving house, getting married or divorced, changing school... these are all said to create great stress. If changing jobs is potentially stressful for an adult, it surely follows that changing schools is potentially stressful for a child. The Boss and I have somehow conspired to move houses at the same time as the Girl (our daughter, who happens to have Down Syndrome) is coming to the end of her time at Marlborough Primary school. We hope to be in our new home not long after she begins her secondary schooling at Cardiff High school.
It breaks my heart to see her cry about this but I'm so proud of her. From Nursery through Year 6 she has held her own in the SRB and mainstream alike. She has teaching support in her mainstream class and evidently faces some challenges that others do not. But differentiation of the syllabus means that she can join in the lesson at her level. She has joined in all the activities, whether stage-based (assemblies, concerts), school trips, residential adventure weeks, sports, the lot. And now she is readying for being the first and, for now at least, the only pupil with Down Syndrome in her new school.
Real tears Our daughter has coped well with her situation. But when only three and a bit weeks were left until the end of term, it started to impact upon her. We left school as we usually do - The Girl and her close friend K ran ahead to pet one or more of the many dogs that are left by the gates whilst their owners

hot-house). On Thursday there is a trip, celebrating the leavers, to Joe's ice-cream emporium. And on Friday - the last day - there will be lots of emotion ending with the PTA hosting a Leavers' disco at a local rugby club. Which gives me Wednesday to get some little thank you gifts for The Girl's teachers and assistants.
We have been impressed and heartened by the way the school has prepared for The Girl's arrival from getting in the Down Syndrome Association's regional representative, arranging an excellent transition programme, training support staff about how DS influences learning styles, and more. We believe that people with Down Syndrome are important members of their local communities, communities where they live, are educated, work, and settle down. We want our daughter's education and her activities to be in the community too. She will be attending her community school; we hope and believe that she will thrive there and also that the school will benefit as a result of her presence and contribution.
The scale of the changes about to engulf us has struck home at last. From primary to secondary is a heck of a step. Our daughter's been in Marlborough Primary for eight years, including nursery; mornings in the SRB and afternoons in mainstream. From the autumn she will mostly be all day in mainstream with 1:1 support. Her new staff have spent some time with her, know her current attainment levels, and seem to be excited. I guess it's all about differentiation of the syllabus, how well it's done, and how well The Girl picks stuff up and applies herself, with The Boss and I supporting in the background.
Surplus to requirements ... is how I felt earlier this week. As part of the transition arrangements between primary and secondary schools, all the will-be Year 7s got to spend two whole days at the High school. I dropped The Girl off for the second of these days. No Teaching Assistant. Pen and paper. Money for lunch. Money for the special film club after school. Parental permission form for her to stay after school for film club. I wouldn't see her until 1730 hours. As she wandered off, after giving me a kiss, she did not look back. I thought: "There will be things that maybe she can't understand. I won't be there for her". I cried a little but hid it. I'm hiding it again as I write this.
I remind myself that she is just a little girl with Down Syndrome, who has some physical and cognitive challenges. I only ever see the whole picture of my daughter and focus on helping her do anything everything - she has a mind to. But she is going into a big new environment that will test her to the 'nth' degree. I hope the school finds ways to help her through such challenges. And also that they find a way to build on her many strengths. Add to that the emotional trauma of selling her home a week after school ends, living in digs for two and a half months, and then moving into a new home, and it's clear that the next few months will easily be the most unsettling and challenging time of our Girl's life. We are doing all we can to make of it all an adventure, involving her in everything. She seems to be OK with it all so far. I am glad that I write my Cardiff Times articles. Knowing that so many people are interested in The Girl's well-being and invest a little bit of themselves -yourselves- in following, commenting, and sharing is actually quite comforting. Thank you.
I felt so damn useless as well as proud. I could do nothing to support her in this strange new environment. She has to learn it for herself. As she grows up she necessarily grows away from us and into her new skin. All we can do is love our kids, be there, try to foresee hazards, and give them a feel for what is right and what is not. Then look on as they take flight. My feelings came on with a suddenness that I hadn't expected or prepared for. End of term I'm writing in the present tense now, even though you'll be reading this in August. Everything this week is about leaving school. Today is the Leavers' concert (parents invited). Tomorrow there is a Leavers' party in Supajump (a trampolining

CHARITABLE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE SUPPORTS CARDIFF TALENTED ATHLETES TO ACHIEVE SPORTING SUCCESS
next generation of athletes and thus ensuring a sporting legacy is in place for future generation: “It is vitally important that we inspire young people to excel in sport and harness their talent towards future success. From starting out as a young athlete and progressing through my sport, I know that support through your development years is crucial. I am delighted that through this programme I am able to champion such support for future sporting talent.”
47 talented young athletes from Cardiff will benefit from a fund worth over £24,000 – thanks to charitable social enterprise GLL. The athletes will be supported through the ground breaking GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK. The awards support was announced recently at Cardiff City Hall with core partner organisations in attendance including Cardiff City Council, Sport Wales, SportsAid Cymru Wales, Cardiff Metropolitan University and representatives from the local advisory panel. These stakeholders were joined by 35 athletes and their guests.
Peter Bundey, GSF Chair, paid tribute to the athletes, programme stakeholders and also highlighted the impact the Foundation is making: “Congratulations to all of the athletes receiving awards. We know first hand the commitment, effort and sacrifices they are making to perform at their best. I would like to thank all our partners and sponsors for their support for the programme. SportsAid, SportsAid Wales and Mary Peters Trust provide the direct links to Sport Governing Body talent pathways, whilst our many corporate sponsors headlined by GLL and Technogym, numerous local authorities, university and physiotherapy partners directly contribute to support these sporting dreams to become a reality.”
The athlete awards cover Olympic, Paralympic, Deaflympic, Special Olympic and Commonwealth sporting disciplines. With a staggering 92% of award recipients receiving no other sport funding and 89% of recipients being aged under 21, the Sport Foundation has highlighted a vital funding gap for young talented athletes currently competing at national and international levels. On the evening GSF supported ambassador Joseph Choong attended to showcase and explain how the support has aided his sporting journeys. Joseph, a Rio 2016 GB modern pentathlete, stated, “The support of the GLL Sport Foundation plays a vital role for athletes as it has done for me transitioning from a junior to international and now Olympian. I know it will make a positive impact to athletes here in Cardiff, it will be great to see some of these athletes here tonight develop further to represent Wales and GB at the highest levels.”
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury said: “Congratulations to the winners of the GLL Sport Foundation Awards which we are proud to support. It’s worth bearing in mind that 89% of the award winners were under the age of 21 so this is a great way of investing in future sporting talent. Regardless of the eventual sporting level reached I wish them all enjoyable and successful futures.”
Cardiff supported athlete Hannah Roberts-Straw, a 15 year old junior GB sailer is transitioning through a pathway to an eventual Olympic boat discipline. “The funding and support will help me progress quickly in terms of equipment, coaching and competition costs.” Wales women rugby 7s captain Elinor Snowsill, a fellow supported athlete, during a Q&A section talked through her competitions focussing on the World Cup, then the Commonwealth and longer term the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “These competitions are what the team and I are working towards, and the support from the GLL Sport Foundation will support this journey.” GSF Patron and former Olympic Champion Sally Gunnell explained the core role the GSF takes in supporting the
24
Since its launch in 2007, the GSF has provided over 13,000 athlete awards at a total support value of over £7.5million across the UK. The Rio Olympics and Paralympics were historic successes for Team GB, and the GSF supported athletes also broke the Foundation’s record medal haul with 20 medals won between them. Supported athletes receive Award packages that include financial grants of up to £1,250, free training memberships enabling access across 300 GLL and partner operated sporting venues along with access to sports science, medical support and employment opportunities all focussed towards supporting their athlete journey.

help! what can i do about unsightly thread veins on the face? Small, broken veins on the face or a general flushed redness resulting from roseacea are a common complaint that we see in the clinic. Although they can affect both men and women, the latter are more susceptible as oestrogen and other female hormones affect blood vessel growth. Anything that affects the hormone levels, such as pregnancy, the menopause and medication such as hormone replacement therapy or birth control, can make you more prone to developing thread veins, but, don’t worry, there are facial vessel removal treatments that can produce highly satisfactory results, with minimal downtime and complications.
without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. The vein is then broken down and absorbed by the body. This means we can deliver a very targeted facial vessel removal treatment with minimal chance of scarring.
1. Prevention is better than cure
We also offer the bespoke Universkin serums which we tailor for each individual patients concerns. Rosacea patients often react to the preservatives that are used in many facial skincare products and these serums are all preservative-free. They also contain an active ingredient called Rutin which has a vasoconstrictive effect on blood vessels, visibly and quickly reducing the appearance of facial flushing.
Rosacea is a slightly more challenging condition and facial flushing can be accompanied by papules and pustules. A dermatologist that is experienced in treating all skin conditions can prescribe antibiotics to control rosacea. Patients with rosacea have very sensitive skin, so we use mild facial washes and facial creams from the NeoStrata range that are non-irritant.
Broken capillaries on the face, typically on the cheeks and nose, are mainly caused by weathering and sun damage. Ultraviolet rays cause the tiny blood vessels under the skin’s surface to dilate and constrict quickly and they can tear. As we age, the skin thins and this can make the marks more visible. Wearing high factor sun protector all year round is key, but there are also other factors, including alcohol consumption or our diet, that can cause the blood vessels to dilate and, over time, thread veins to appear.
Facial veins are rarely harmful, but they can make sufferers feel very conscious about their appearance. Facial vessel removal is relatively quick and effective and results are highly satisfactory. For more information, call 02920 617690 to book a consultation.
2. Be gentle Do not try and ‘scrub’ them away; anything that damages the top layer of the skin such as aggressive scrubs and exfoliators or treatments like microdermabrasion will not improve the appearance of facial veins and may make them appear worse. Facial vessel removal treatments work by treating the veins under the surface of the skin.
3. See a specialist If you’re bothered by thread veins on the face, then they can be treated very effectively. Pulsed dye and KTP lasers can produce excellent facial vessel removal results. Both lasers work in a similar way; the laser energy is attracted to the colour of the facial vessel, heating the vein

10 surprising ways to sharpen your brain and boost your memory Keep those pearly whites clean Brushing your teeth regularly will not only keep your smile white but will also boost your memory. Researchers at the University of California found that people who brush their teeth less than once a day might be up to 65% more likely to develop dementia than those who brush it daily. How come? Scientists think that the bacteria that cause gum disease may trigger an immune response in the brain, which destroys neurons and can cause symptoms such as memory loss.
Can’t remember where your keys are? Worried that you’ve left the iron on? If you are feeling ‘foggy’ and having trouble remembering things check out 10 surprising ways to sharpen your brain!
Unleash your inner Zen Dr Marilyn Glenville, the UK's leading Nutritionist and author of Natural Solutions for Dementia and Alzheimer's says, “Meditation can not only help relieve stress, but also improve brain function. In one study, participants were asked to practice a guided meditation for 15 to 30 minutes a day for 8 weeks. MRI scans showed not only improved functional connectivity in the default mode network but also slowed shrinkage of the hippocampus, the main part of the brain responsible for memory that usually shrinks with dementia. Participants also showed an overall improvement in cognition and wellbeing.”
Go for a chewy Sitting an exam? Going for a job interview? Reach for a chewing gum! Research found that people who chewed throughout tests of long-term and short-term memory achieved better scores than people who did not by 35%. What’s the reason behind it? According to scientists, chewing gum increases heart rate and anything that improves delivery of things like oxygen in the brain can potentially enhance cognitive function.

Be social Making friends and socialising has a great impact on our emotional wellbeing as well as brain functions. How? When speaking to people and building relationships, you have to pay attention to what they say and then use your memory to recall information to be able to hold a conversation.
Curry for dinner? There is a reason why Turmeric has been described as a superfood. The substance that gives it the yellow/orange colour is known as curcumin, which is the main agent that is responsible for its health giving properties. Also, it has an anti-inflammatory effect. Studies have shown that a pinch of turmeric a day keeps memory loss away. Now there is more reason to enjoy your favourite curry!
Do yoga “Researchers hypothesise that the positive effects of exercise on cognitive function occur because exercise can increase hippocampal volume by 2%, reversing age-related loss in volume by one to two years. In another study, yoga has been shown to be more effective at improving memory than brain training. Both yoga and brain training improve verbal memory, but the yoga had the added benefit of improving visual-spatial memory too. This is the memory that helps with remembering locations,” Marilyn explains.
Doodle Did you know that doodling during a call or a meeting can actually help you remember what has been said better? One study showed people who doodled while listening performed almost 30% better on a surprise memory quiz than those who did not.
Learn something new There are a range of techniques to keep your brain alert that don’t have to be paper-based cognitive tasks. Dr Glenville says, “Walking in a new park or taking up line dancing fire up new neural pathways that keep your brain in touch. Needing to remember the steps in a dance is also a wonderful workout for your brain – learning the flow and rhythm of the music stimulates cognitive activity, while learning and performing the steps is great for both your memory and your physical fitness. Active learning is the perfect complement for doing jigsaws, Sudoku and crosswords.”
Say it OUT LOUD This is the easiest of all methods – just say it out loud! Studies published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, found saying things out loud to yourself will help with recall. How? Scientists call it the production effect: the words you speak aloud are translated into speech and you have knowledge of producing the items as well as a memory of hearing them. All of this information makes your memory store all those details for longer.
Get busy between the sheets Marilyn says, “A huge study of more than 6,800 people showed that those who were active in the bedroom had sharpened cognitive function. It is thought that the benefit could come from the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine into the brain during intercourse.”

Wyburn & Wayne Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are two of the city`s premiere socialites, giving you their take on what's hot in and around Cardiff!
Gardens! We had the pleasure of interviewing the cast of Macbeth as well as Ben Joseph Smith on our Radio Cardiff Show, and also enjoyed both Spamalot and The Vicar of Dibley! They were both incredibly funny and some of the best live comedy I've seen!
Wyburn: I have absolutely no idea where the past few weeks have gone, and even less of an idea how we've fitted everything in! What to mention first..?
Wyburn: They really were! Also, a huge well done on their collaboration with Hello Cabaret which was a huge success and breath taking to watch in the open air theatre. Dan Fulham and all his cast should be incredibly proud. The New Theatre welcomed the lovely Jody Prenger who stars in her one woman show Shirley Valentine - we had the honour of interviewing and meeting her ahead of the show and she loves Cardiff, we wanted a drink with her!
Wayne: I know! Well I think a perfect start would be all the incredible live concerts we've attended! How absolutely out of this world was Celine Dion at the 02 in London? Without a doubt one of the best live vocalists ever - a living icon and yes, I shed a few tears. Just wow! The other highlight concert for me was Coldplay here in Cardiff - I can't begin to explain the goose bumps and atmosphere. Every song was sensational and to end both nights with the Welsh national anthem was just magic - along with a guest appearance from Rob Brydon and those awesome fireworks on the 2nd night! Wyburn: For me, a huge accomplishment was meeting The Jacksons at the Motorpoint Arena and presenting them with pizza art, they loved them and the whole show was great, damn they can still move! Not to forget the one and only Justin Bieber - I danced like a teenager for 2 hours and loved every second - no shame!
Wayne: She was so fun! Speaking of fun, another one man show in town was our dear friend Tobias Weatherburn whose show Many Man, as part of the ever growing Cardiff Fringe Festival, was superb. We felt genuinely very proud of our friend, well done Tobe! Tim Reynolds put on an outstanding night of musical theatre songs called Showtime - A Night at the Musicals, in The Gate Arts Centre - every performer was spot on and this was another emotional evening!
Wayne: As we're on the subject of live shows, last month for theatre in Cardiff was INSANE! Every year our friends at Cardiff Open Air Theatre Fest entertain us and the city with the best outdoor productions over at Sophia
Wyburn: You're coming across very emotional this month Wayne haha, it's usually me! Not gonna lie, every time it's got me too - guilty! The WMC has continued to impress with Grease, the musical - starring The Wanted boyband star Tom

Wyburn: Ah yes! I presented Brooklyn Beckham with a coffee artwork at his photography book launch and he loved it! And then... out of nowhere I got the call to appear on ITV This Morning and present Holly & Phil with my lipstick kissing artwork of them, along with an interview! It was such a great day and I still can't believe they had me on!
Parker and Jimmy Osmond. Great production, perfect humour and vocals - couldn't fault it! Wayne: I love Grease, you can't go wrong with a classic. We have to say congratulations to Marcel and the team who put together the Vintage For Victory festival up at Whitchurch library field. The whole weekend was jam packed with amazing live music, including the Big Mac Wholly Soul Band, great food & drink and awesome vintage vehicles etc. We loved dressing up as Saturday Night Fever and a Hippy, didn't we Nath?
Wayne: Brooklyn was so down to earth and Nath, I can't begin to explain how proud I was of you that day - chilling in the green room, having a laugh with other guests and our buddy Rylan and then you made us all proud by smashing your interview! Onwards and upwards brother...
Wyburn: Well I did get attached to my long blonde hair... I even braided some of it! That came in useful for when we recorded our new Carpool Karaoke STEPS special! Ah I love Steps - our costume changes are pretty outrageous, anyone who wants to see it head over to our Facebook to see us making further fools of ourselves haha. A huge huge thank you to the guys at Mercure Holland House Hotel for a fantastic Christmas Party (yes in July), launching your Christmas party deals! We had such fun!

Cardiffian of the Month Name: Mark Thomas Occupation: Co-owner at The Protein Bar, Wellfield Rd. Fave Bar in Cardiff: Dirty Martinis Fave Restaurant in Cardiff: Bar 44 Fave Cardiffian: Underworld Cardiff in 3 words: Attitude Free Zone
Wayne: We did indeed. Beautiful food and lovely alcohol haha, also a bit too much dancing on my part as I put my knee out for several weeks after ending up in A&E dancing to that damn Mariah Carey Song! Wyburn: You were in the wars last month, I did try to look after you like a good friend should! Definitely book your staff party with those though everyone! Bristol Pride has got us in the mood for the upcoming Cardiff Pride at the end of August! We got to hang out with the lovely Saara Aalto, Charlie Hides and more throughout the day and the weather stayed wonderful for us too - great fun! Wayne: Saara recorded a lovely message for my nephew Jack, who's her biggest fan, she was so lush! Not to forget Jennifer Rush too - what a 90's legend! We also travelled to Liverpool and London for two very special occasions this month didn't we Nath? You've been hard at work making some new art=

roaring talent in local production By Bethan Cook Llandaff City Church in Wales Primary School was swarmed with excited parents last month for a production of ‘Roar Some More’, a unique adaption of the family favourite film and most successful stage show of all time, ‘The Lion King’. Earlier this year, auditions were held to cast all roles, which ranged from stagehands to chorus - even to the king of the jungle himself, Simba! Rehearsals have been taking place on a weekly basis ever since, and it’s clear that the commitment and practice certainly paid off...the roof was blown off three nights in a row! It was a majestic explosion of spectacle that certainly wasn’t to be missed.
A perfect blend of carnival spirit and cinematic thrill, the production could not have been more captivating. Costuming, lighting, set/prop design, hair/makeup - it could not have been more fitting! However, it is important to mention that this could not have happened without the non-stop support, encouragement and dedication from Mrs E Brown, Miss M Bannister, Miss K Shewring, Mr S Johns and Miss V Smith, in addition to the many other supporting staff behind the scenes.
The past few years has brought about adaptions of familiar productions such as ‘Miss Poppins’ and ‘Climb Every Mountain’. I wonder what’s on the bill next? Join in the fun and come along, the children of Llandaff City are extremely talented!
Dimmed lighting, wild animal upheavals and the chilling Zulu chorus instantly took the audience to the African jungle paradise to meet Simba, Nala and the rest of the gang. Over one hundred enthusiastic children from years five and six came together to perform a show-stopping musical theatre bonanza that lasted almost two hours - an impressive stunt for children between the ages of nine and eleven on school nights! When all of the animals joined forces for the finale, it was almost as if Noah had emptied his ark right in front of the audience!
The productions are of such an exceptional standard that you’ll forget you’re in a school hall and not the West End! The only difference is that you can grab yourself a ticket for a mere £5 – what a steal! Laughter, tears and entertainment are guaranteed! “And Another Thing…….”
By Vince Nolan
karaoke jokey and captain marvel In my previous scribblings I mused over the possible existence or proliferation of Plough Women as opposed to Plough Men. Well they do exist and here is photographic evidence if it were needed, in the picture below. However, it seems our US chums have done some academic work in this area. I tripped over this: This paper tests the hypothesis that traditional agricultural practices influenced the historical gender division of labour and the evolution and persistence of gender norms. Duh, obviously!
Much of what we say is of course derived from ancient language and traditions. However, our Yankee cousins have long used English in more imaginative ways. I have just been reading a US detective novel where the author talks about a tempest in a teapot instead of a storm in a teacup which I thought was rather neat. You will have noted that I have been silent on the recent General Election. Since it has now gone away with a result that was about as satisfactory as a drawn Lions Series, I feel the need to discuss the literature sent to me by our fragrant Prime Minister, which I assume was meant to persuade me to vote for her. This being a single sheet of A4 paper containing the worst English wot I have read in many years. It was grammatically incorrect and repetitive. Nine sentences beginning with “And,” one with “But” (which could have been a Welsh reference), three with “So” and a missing word thrown in (or not) just to keep us on our toes. One wonders about her European Xbrite negotiations. Here is a picture of her mulling over the first draft.
Agricultural joke: “As a farmer, I hear lots of jokes about sheep. I told them to my dog but he'd herd them all”. Staying with matters American, a school teacher was recently arrested at JFK Airport as he attempted to board a flight whilst in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he believed the man was a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of maths instruction.

half-way across the stage that he realised he was wearing flip-flops.
She Who Must Be Obeyed and I recently returned from a splendid staycation in Devon. This coincided with the hottest week for 20 years so something had to go wrong. Karma and all that.
Back to Devon and a close encounter of the nerd kind. The Leader of the Opposition and I were in one of our favourite watering-holes engaged in a heated game of dominoes whilst necking a yard-ofale each when this bloke plonked himself down at our table. He introduced himself as Captain David Webb, ex-army medic of 22 years standing, or in his case, 22 years of sitting and lying through his four teeth. I said “Captain Webb, as in Jason Bourne’s real name in the Bourne identity? What regiment did you serve with?” Response: – “I didn’t carry a gun” (which was probably just as well). He told us he was starting a kennels business and his girlfriend was in Switzerland emptying her bank account to help fund it. If she ever existed, I hoped for her sake that she had emigrated and not told him. He was also sporting a Mohican haircut which he claimed was an act of rebellion after 22 years of army life. Strange behaviour for an officer. He claimed that our pub had two tariffs, one for locals and one for tourists and he would ensure we were given local rates. “Help”, I mouthed silently to She (or a similar four letter word). As veterans of staying in said pub we knew his tariff story was yet another load of shoemakers. His final point was to tell us he lived up the road in Woolfardisworthy. He may have done but we have stayed in the area often enough to know that the locals pronounce in Woolsery.
One evening we pitched up at our village pub, The Three-Legged Mare (known locally as The Wonky Donkey) where a number of very accomplished musicians were having a jam session. They were excellent. However, they invited people to come up and sing. Sat in front of us was a girl in her 20’s with her own portfolio of songs which she had brought with her along with her mother and boyfriend. She then made a big issue over whether she was going to sing or not. I was already booing at this point having guessed what was to come. Eventually she settled on two songs. She had a voice like bagpipes suffering from tonsillitis. Nonetheless her back-up team were blind to this (and deaf too presumably) because she finished her set to a two person standing ovation. Britain has not got talent. All of which leads me very nicely to comedian Tim Vine who has. He was in a Northern Theatre in his early days and his act was going down like a cup of cold sick. Even his best material was not raising so much as a titter. Eventually he could take no more and walked off in utter silence save for an individual slow handclapping. It was only when he was
I have often wondered how dangerous and disturbed one needs to be in order to be locked away. This guy was either on borrowed time or had escaped. Seldom am I lost for words but on this occasion he had done me. Karma see. Finally, the current Mrs Nolan has sold me another joke: Scientists have now found a way to grow vocal cords in a petri dish – the results speak for themselves. Happy Holidays.

how to put the hygge into your life, and be happier for it! By Natalie McCulloch
If I asked you now – ‘How cosy are you?’ What would you say? ‘I’m ok’, ‘Not too bad’, ‘None of your business’, ‘Hadn’t really given it much thought’"well, if the latter is true – I hold out a warm invite to join me on a virtual trek to Denmark to discover ‘Hygge’!
comfortable is different, so preparation is important in embracing the challenge of finding yours! Hygge isn’t about splashing out, or buying new things – quite the opposite - it is about ‘being, not having’. Hygge teaches us to shed the weight of our possessions and edit our lives and discover the freedom of being together uninhibited by status and stuff. Making the most of what we have is important as well as valuing this, and being happy. And being kind to ourselves is just as crucial.
Pronounced ‘Hue-Gah’, this is a feeling of being safe, sheltered and comforted; an invite to intimacy and contentment. Like mindfulness in its principles, ‘Hygge’ teaches us to be a little more focused on paying attention to what makes us feel comforted, cosy and alive. It is a straightforward and simple concept too - this could help people feel more content in their day-to-day life.
So much of our life is spent aiming higher. This is great in driving to success, but this can also increase blood pressure. Further to this, our ‘self talk‘ is mostly negative, blaming ourselves for perceived failures, chastising ourselves when things don’t go exactly to plan, and pinpointing flaws within ourselves or our appearance in ways which we would never do to others. So, Hygge which encompasses warmth, self-care and simple comforts is worth trying out. It’s not a new concept by any means: Danish people have been embracing it into their lifestyles for several years. Could the Brits learn from their example?
It’s not extremely outrageous, in fact it may be something you’re practicing already! Hygge is all about adding the ‘little touches’ into your home and being. It may be a matter of putting cushions on our favourite chair before we snuggle into it, decorating the table with pretty napkins and polished cutlery regardless of if we are dining alone, or with 10 pals! Or taking the longer, more scenic route home to smell the scents of the park flowers which spring has to offer. Perhaps using candle lighting for a meal time, not merely to create light, but to show togetherness and enhance the ‘comfort of a dancing flame’. Everyone’s idea of what makes them feel
According to the ‘World Happiness Report’, the Danes are amongst the happiest people in the world. Perhaps their high standard of living and overall contentment contribute to this? With much unhappiness, stress and discontent in the world – surely, it’s worth trying to embrace something to counteract this? If you can pinpoint parts of your life which you’re not content with, perhaps today is the day to alter this by putting a bit more comfort into your daily living. Let the Hygge principles permeate your being; the results may well surprise you!

Summer has arrived in the Diff! And I think you will agree that our city always looks its best under blue skies and sunshine. As always, our hometown is buzzing with visitors from near and far making it one of the UK’s busiest cities throughout summer.
It’s also worth mentioning the Key to the Castle scheme for people who live or work in Cardiff. Next time you visit, take proof of address with you and £6. You can then claim your very own key to the castle! This allows the enjoyment of 3 years’ entry into the castle and 10% discount at the castle shop. explore and stop off for a spot of lunch or dinner. A friend recently introduced me to Madame Fromage, a speciality cheese shop, deli and café within the arcade. We recently popped in for a leisurely lunch and I wasn’t disappointed The café staff were particularly welcoming as they showed us to an available table and discussed the menu and specials for the day. The café is small and popular so I recommend arriving early for lunch. The menu isn’t extensive, I have no issue with this. I find its always better to stick to a limited number of meal choices that are done well. I decided on a mini meat platter and some garlic bread to share.

CT Feature The meat platter was beautifully presented. It included the selection of meats and fresh bread, chutney, pickle and apple. The portion size was generous too! The whole platter was delicious and I would order it again in a heartbeat. What really made lunch special was our garlic bread! I know it seems strange to rave of a side dish, right? But this was the best garlic bread I had ever tasted. It was a gorgeous moreish buttery herby plate of loveliness. A real comfort food, I will be back for more soon! Obviously, I had to purchase some cheese, as its their thang, I had to. So, I chose some cheeses to take home, a cheddar with elderflower and the Cornish Yarg were my favourite. My husband and I enjoyed those with some apple and almond crackers that I had also picked up at the deli. Madame Fromage also have a selection of beautiful cakes. Again, for research, I had to buy one to take home. I chose a Crème Brulee brownie. I kind of lost out with this one as I allowed my son to try it, he confirmed that it was scrumptious as he only left me a small corner to try! So, I can only confirm that I enjoyed what I had. Throughout our visit to Madame Fromage the staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming, it’s a great local independent business in Cardiff. Next time you are passing, pop in and see for yourself. Madame Fromage offer a range of services from wedding cakes (yes, made of cheese!) to hampers. You can find all you need to know here: www.madamefromage.co.uk Until next month, enjoy summer in the Diff, and don’t forget to support local businesses along the way! ‘oh, what a night!’ By Michael James
The heading of this piece is borrowed from the 'The Four Seasons' 1963 hit, 'December 1963 (Oh, What a Night!)', which came to me on my way home from a concert early last month which was from a completely different music genre but which still left me singing, 'Oh, What a Night'.
The 'Birthday Boys' had graciously invited three more of Wales' finest to join in the celebration: the Morriston Orpheus Choir, Pendyrus Male Choir and Cor Meibion Ponarddulais, comrades in song but in the past, fierce rival competitors of each other. Tonight they were together joined by their love of singing, and what a magnificent sound this combination of voices made under the baton of Treorchy's Musical Director, the multi-talented Jeffery Howard. He introduced them as “Wales' best Choir” and then invited the audience to take their pick. Very diplomatic Jeff!
The concert, at St. David's Hall, was a birthday party to celebrate '70 Glorious Years', of the World Famous Treorchy Male Choir, following it's re-formation at the end of World War Two. What a fabulous party to be invited to. The hall was packed with lovers of Male Choral singing, from all over South Wales and beyond who were enthralled by the heavenly sound that brought a lump to many a throat and more than a single tear to many pairs of eyes.
The guest soloist for the evening was Shan Cothi, the nationally renowned soprano who regularly sings with all four choirs - her wonderful, soaring voice, a lovely contrast to the male voices, as she sang her own selected items, both classical and traditional, and was accompanied at the piano for two of them by Jeff Howard himself.
Treorchy Male Choir, from my home valley of 'The Rhondda', wanted to celebrate its birthday with as many of its friends as possible - so, as well as all of us fortunately able to get tickets, they had assembled a wonderful array of talent from the factory that is Welsh Music. We may no longer produce the best steam coal and be down to just a couple of steel plants, but the conveyor belt of Welsh outside halves and musical talent just keeps 'rollin' away' as the great admirer of Welsh Coral Music, Paul Robson sang. How he would have loved to be there to join the party.
The brilliant Chamber Orchestra of Wales provided the music and included in its ranks the
Recently there has been some concern over the future of male voice choirs but nearly every other welsh village or town has a choir and, arguably, four of the best were on stage in this concert.

The Massed Choir sang a beautifully haunting Myfanwy and traditional hymns, 'Llanfair', 'Llef', 'Tydi a Roddaist', 'Morte Christie' and ended with a rousing 'Gwahoddiad'. The combined sound was truly heavenly, worthy of the voices of these great Welsh Male Choirs. The evening concluded with a standing ovation by the enthusiastic audience and a spirited rendition of, ‘Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’. What a truly brilliant evening, featuring Wales' finest Choirs, Soloist and Musicians led by the young and greatly talented, Jeffery Howard. Well done to all concerned for this musical feast. Musical Directors of the other three Choirs, showcasing their own talents. Playing the cello, Stewart Roberts (Pendyrus) on piano, Joy Amman Davies (Morriston Orpheus) on the organ, Clive Phillips (Cor Meibion Pontarddulais) and with Jeff Howard's wife, Rachael, playing the harp beautifully.
I am still tingling with excitement as I write this piece. It's no wonder that I keep thinking, 'OH, WHAT A NIGHT!' P.S. Unfortunately, I cannot promise you that such a musical feast will be coming again anytime soon but what I can promise is another concert by the wonderful Treorchy Male Choir. It is a Charity event on behalf of Prostate Cymru, the organisation helping to fight Prostate Cancer in Wales. It is being held at Albany Road Baptist Church, Cardiff, on Thursday, 9 November 2017, at 7.00pm. Entry by ticket only! For further information and tickets, please ring, 02920 753149.
Treorchy was accompanied by its usual pianist, the talented Helen Roberts, and the whole evening was flawlessly linked together by the excellent and very funny, Dean Powell. Usually Dean can be found in the front row of the 'first tenor' section of Treorchy MC or sometimes as a soloist, singing duets or reading appropriate poems or stories, but this time he took the role of Master of Ceremonies, a role he played to perfection. The 'Birthday Boys', showcased their talent and versatility with old favourites, 'Ar Lan y Mor', 'Calon Lan', 'Y Darlun', 'Sospan Fach', all with new arrangements by Jeff Howard. More modern pieces of 'What Would I Do Without My Music' and 'You Raise Me Up', were followed by new arrangements of Matt Monro's 'Portrait of My Love' and Frank Sinatra's 'You Make Me Feel So Young'.

There is a high risk of this being followed by someone trying to crack a joke about ‘how many guys does it take to make a burger?’, which will be greeted by a chorus of groans and eye rolls. Or if you’re feeling extra peckish, you could treat yourself to a buffet; Spice Route or Oriental Garden, both guarantee an all-you-can-eat experience which do not disappoint when it comes to tickling the taste buds. Or visit Cadwaladers for a scoop of their famous ice cream, along with other sweet treats. Books To Look Out For In August Bruno and Lewis: The Boxing Years is the account of how two fighters changed the face of British heavyweight boxing on a global stage. The journeys of Bruno and Lewis to the world heavyweight crowns are explored through the insight of a leading boxing historian Ralph Oates, who analyses their triumphs, setbacks, and adversaries. The book includes insight on: - How Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno made history in 1993 by being the first Britons to meet each other for a version of the world heavyweight title - How Frank Bruno won the WBC heavyweight title by outpointing holder Oliver McCall over twelve rounds and how Lennox Lewis became the first British fighter to hold the world heavyweight title since Bob Fitzsimmons. Written by Ralph Oates Published by Fonthill Media. £16.99 Astronomer Martin Griffiths subverts conventional astronomical thought by eschewing the classical naming of constellations and investigating Welsh and Celtic naming. Ancient peoples around the world placed their own myths and legends in the heavens, though these have tended to become lost behind the dominant use of classical cultural stories to name stars. In many cases it is a result of a literary culture displacing an oral culture. Griffiths has researched past use of Welsh heroes from the Mabinogion in the naming of constellations and his new book is an interesting and provocative combination of a new perspective on Welsh mythology and an astronomy guidebook.
Summer 1995. Vandal. Truant. Thief. Off the rails and heading for disaster - fifteen-year-old Marvin has no more bridges left to burn in his South Wales valleys hometown. Guilt-ridden over the departure of his alcoholic mother from the family home, he dreams of a chance to start fresh at her new place down in Cardiff if only he can persuade her he's changed for the better. But armed with nothing more than a scrawled address and a lucky American penny, will Marvin have the courage or resources to seek out his mother and grasp his chance of redemption? Not without the help of Becca, a streetwise tearaway with a razor tongue and even sharper wits who might just prove to be his only saviour or his ultimate downfall as together they embark on a wild, lawless journey through the underbelly of the city. "I was born as apartheid was dying." So begins this debut novel about Thandi, raised in Pennsylvania but wondering increasingly about her "other home country" of South Africa. She dives into a rediscovery of her mother's land, which serves as a kind of unsteady anchor for her, even as her mother passes away and she realizes she'll soon be a mother herself. Laden with meditative, intimate and at times unsettling vignettes, What We Lose will leave you in a pensive state. Thandi – the heroine of this novel, is the only child of her mother (a coloured South African) and father (a light skinned African American) who is very aware of her privileges & multicultural background. Readers follow Thandi on her journey from childhood to adulthood as she navigates what it means to be a black woman in America and South Africa, dealing with the loss of a loved one, motherhood and love. Bootleggers Have you heard of the Prohibition era – the sad period of 14 years, during which alcohol was banned? While the prohibition was lifted on the 5th of December 1933, you can still celebrate this happy day by dancing and enjoying various liqueurs at The Bootlegger! The lovely cocktail bar, independent and Welsh family run, has a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Stop by to enjoy live music they offer free entry all week, and the music includes swing, blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, with a focus on the 1920s and 30s swing and jazz scene. The liqueur selection is truly impressive. You can choose from over 80 cocktails, all of which use fresh natural ingredients, with no pre mixing. They have a delicious signature cocktails collection, as well as classics from the Prohibition era. Enjoy 2 cocktails for £10 during happy hour, which is all night from Sunday to Thursday, and between 4 and 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The specially dedicated gin bar is also definitely worth a try, and is growing its collection every week! 5A Womanby St, Cardiff CF10 1BR http://cardiffbootlegger.co.uk/

Mary’s Who would miss out on a spectacular night of cabaret?! Head over to Mary’s, the Cardiff premiere cabaret cocktail bar, for an extraordinary night. While Mary’s is a gay bar, anyone can have a great time here with local and national drag. Their dazzling cabaret performers are not the only thing bringing crowds of people to this bar, though. The cocktails at Mary’s are some of the best in Cardiff. My personal preference is for their collection of Prosecco cocktails, and especially the Raspberry Le Fizz - a combination of Grancia prosecco, Grey Goose vodka, Chambord black raspberry liqueur, elderflower cordial and lime juice. You should also try their Beverly Hills Iced Tea – Bacardi, gin, tequila and Prosecco all packed together in a surprisingly delicious combination. Head over on a Tuesday after 9pm for their 2 for 1 offers, or stop by for happy hour any day between 4 and 8pm to enjoy 50% off drinks. This month, Mary’s is celebrating pride with the banner ‘Proud Mary’s’ and a three day line-up of cabaret and entertainment. 89 St Mary Street, Cardiff http://www.maryscardiff.co.uk/
