June flew by as every other month seems to these days, and we even managed a mini heatwave! Mark celebrated his birthday by seeing the cricket team he coaches winning their match, and continuing their unbeaten season, then afterwards attending the International T20 cricket match between England and South Africa at the SWALEC Stadium, which England won. A perfect sporting day for him, and a day out in the fresh air and sunshine for me! Georgia also celebrated her birthday last month in Dublin. I’m pretty sure she had her fair share of Guinness with friends, and needed an extra week off work to recover! Continuing the June birthday theme, we also celebrated our Aunt's birthday at St. David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay, where we went for afternoon tea. The welcome and service was amazing, not to mention the food itself, so if you’re stuck for ideas we highly recommend this for a gift or if you are celebrating a special occasion. July signals the start of the school summer holidays, so with this in mind there are plenty of ideas throughout the magazine for things to do and places to visit. Also, if you are a lover of cocktails, which some of us are here at Cardiff Times, then our feature on the best places in Cardiff for a summer cocktail is a must, see page 48 for more details. Finally, let’s hope we have plenty more heatwaves and the same record breaking temperatures in July too!

The Welsh Camerata performs choral pieces written during or inspired by the Edwardian era — that brief period of apparent ease and long summers before the First World War. All the pieces are unaccompanied part-songs, set to secular texts including folk songs, coinciding with a popular upsurge in the rediscovery and gathering of folklore during this period. They cover a wide range of styles. All Saints Church, 3 Park Road, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, CF62 6NU http://www.welshcamerata.org/

home. Sometime later, not long, the fire started. Apparently, residents from the higher floors were initially told to stay in their flats, in line with agreed protocols. But the fire spread fast, far and wide, making such protocols useless. Today, the talking heads are mixing expertise with guesswork as to what went wrong and who was to blame. Reading this in July, you will probably know more than today's experts do.
I'm afraid I've left writing this month's column to the last minute, to the day before my publisher has to hit the printers. I'm not exactly a 'last-minute' kind of writer; I just work better to a final deadline. But in this case it means that I heard something on the radio last night that I can't get out of my head. Yesterday, the Grenfell Tower fire in North Kensington destroyed the homes of some one hundred and twenty families and took at least twelve lives. As I write, the London Fire Commissioner is explaining that she expects that number to rise. Reading this, in July, you will know whether her fears proved correct.
Father and son may have spoken by phone any number of times, the young man being interviewed was not specific on this point and his interlocutor didn't press him, for obvious reasons. He did however, tell of his friend's final phone call with his father. Phoning his son from inside the building, as the fire raced up the Tower, the dad's last reported words were: "the floor's too hot to stand on. I love you son...". How does one handle being trapped in a place, a situation, a state of mind, knowing that relief cannot arrive before the worst happens? Would fear and anger turn into resignation or acceptance? Would we reflect on a life, hopefully, well-lived, or consider things left undone? Or what? It doesn't have to be an event like Grenfell Tower.
The media have been all over the story, reporting and fact-finding, trying to find the words and images to convey the scale of what is unfolding. Interviewed, one young man spoke of his friend and his friend's father, who had taken some family members across town to Leytonstone. Instead of staying the night there he decided to travel back to Grenfell Tower, arriving home before the blaze started. Father and son spoke briefly by phone confirming the journey had gone well and that he was now

Consider the case of Steve Hewlett1, the presenter of BBC Radio 4's 'The Media Show'. He was told in March 2016 that he had cancer of the oesophagus and had "weeks, possibly months" to live. Facing

this death sentence, he allowed himself to be interviewed most Mondays for six months, by Eddie Mair on the nightly PM programme. He examined issues such as drug trials and his reactions to such treatment. Movingly, he told how upset he was to know that he would not be there for his three adult boys, and how low it made him feel that they might not know how deep his love for them was. He married his partner, Rachel, in the Royal Marsden Hospital. He died there while listening to Bob Dylan with his family.
bargaining, and depression, leaving only acceptance to come. Perhaps acceptance is closer than I sometimes imagine too, if 'acceptance' is about the realisation that expressing the love I have for my wife (The Boss) and daughter (The Girl, who happens to have Down Syndrome), is what my life is now all about. If my condition worsens and if I become one of the twenty per cent, I want The Girl to be in no doubt that the love I have for her is like none other. I hope that, if I am ever unable to express to The Girl how much she means to me, to us, she will read these little columns, look at my photographs of her life, read my Blog4 and realise that she is loved.
Given Hewlett's comments about his boys it was lovely to hear his sons on Monday 12 June, on PM with Mair, tell of their final holiday with their father2, in Croatia: "We were all on the boat, relaxing. It was evening, sunset, all had a beer, and he turned - and it was completely out of the blue - he just said, 'you have no idea how much you boys mean to me' he explained that the love he felt for us he had never felt before in his life...but for him to say that - I'm so, so glad he did."
This is a much more emotional column than was my intention. After watching a tower burn to the ground with its residents in place, I make no apology for saying that love is the most important thing in our lives. When we have love we should raise our voices to the skies and proclaim it. Even if a sudden disaster or a long term decline strike us, let our loved ones be in no doubt how much they mean to us.
Consider the case of someone diagnosed with a condition one of the effects of which is a twenty per cent chance of developing dementia - a slower kind of loss than being trapped in a burning tower but a significant one for all that. That 'someone' is me and the condition is Parkinson's disease. Regular readers will know that I have had this for eighteen months though it was diagnosed in June last year. If there are five stages3 of grief and loss I definitely went through four of them: denial, anger,

‘if in doubt, check it out’; all you need to know about mole removal Unsightly facial moles can be a cause of great distress and often get bigger as we get older; the unfortunate Nanny McPhee effect. A simple search on the internet provides a whole host of at-home mole removal treatments, but this is one area where expert treatment is required.
Avoid beauty clinics Discount deals offered by beauty clinics advertising mole removal can be very tempting, but the treatments and devices they use are often not the most appropriate. IPL, electrolysis and cryotherapy are often used but do not produce optimal results and can cause scarring. A beauty therapist will also not be medically trained in assessing moles.
Can I get my mole removal on the NHS? The NHS used to freely offer mole removal, but as our health service has become increasingly cash-strapped, they have now changed their policy on mole removal, only treating ones that are a cause for concern. A private dermatology clinic can be your best option for mole removal as any further investigations will be carried out promptly, to ensure peace of mind.
Know your moles There is more than one type of mole. Skin-coloured moles are often benign and are relatively easy to remove as the skin cells are superficial. At the Specialist Skin Clinic we perform a shave excision on skin-coloured moles; this is a very quick treatment, with no stitches required and within a couple of months there will be no noticeable scar.
Avoid DIY mole removal Many of the tips offered on the internet are pretty scary and likely to result in scarring at best. Users are advised to scratch the surface of the mole before applying treatments that will ‘cauterise’ it. Many are unfortunately left with indents in the skin or red, lumpy scars that actually look far worse than the original mole did. At the Specialist Skin Clinic we offer a range of aesthetic treatments for scarring, but we cannot remove scars entirely.
For more information on our mole removal treatments, call 02920 617690 to arrange a consultation with Dr. Maria Gonzalez or go to www.specialistskinclinic.uk for more information.
More worrying, though, is that users could be overlooking warning signs of a malignant melanoma that will require urgent intervention. Suspicious moles should be checked out A dermatologist will be able to identify whether a mole looks suspicious and arrange for it to be sent for analysis. Melanoma is a very common form of skin cancer, with over 14,000 cases diagnosed every year, and the best chance of success is prompt treatment.

With Cryolipolysis there is no downtime, swelling or discomfort. It is a pain free process. little fizz – fun and learning through music, movement and play for ages 0 - 4 By Liz Mullen with photos by Katie Barrett Photography
Little Fizz is an Award Winning, exciting and engaging combination of music, movement and learning through play within a fun, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Classes are held in Cardiff, Caerphilly and Penarth every weekday with Family Friendly Flexible Attendance.
well together. The activities engage and entertain the little ones, encourage interaction and provide inspiration for activities to continue at home. The social time afterwards helps to make Little Fizz a real group, as well as a class, and everyone enjoys the chance to get to know each other and form friendships.
Little Fizz is inspired by the excitement and energy with which little people approach life; a celebration that every child is unique and will learn and develop differently. The emphasis is on individual enjoyment, expression and experience and on spending special time together.
Fun activities to provide developmental opportunities within a relaxed and fun environment. Little Fizz activities are carefully designed to provide developmental opportunity and encouragement for little ones whilst recognizing that all children develop differently, and that they learn best whilst having fun!
Little Fizz has lots to offer parents, carers and their little ones: – Each 1hr session comprises of an ideal combination of 40 minutes structured class and 20 minutes social time. – The 40 minute class element consists of a variety of engaging activities within a learning theme, which we build on week by week. – Our activities are carefully designed to provide an exciting range of developmental opportunities for little ones, whilst recognising that all children develop differently, and that they learn best whilst having fun! – Our family friendly flexible attendance policy means you never miss out or lose money. – We are an inclusive and welcoming group, in which every child and carer can enjoy and benefit from regardless of ability or medical needs. – Behind all that we do is a wealth of experience, as well as an understanding and love of little people!
Developmental areas include: – Body awareness, coordination, strength and motor skills – Creative development and imagination. – Language, vocabulary, communication and expression. – Social Interaction and group skills. – Early literacy and numeracy. – Sensory development. – Confidence and self esteem. – An introduction to sequencing and recognising pattern. – Knowledge and understanding of the world. Family Flexible Attendance Policy We understand and know from personal experience that having young children and busy lives can make it difficult to commit to a block of classes and to attending the same class every week. Little Fizz classes run everyday in the Cardiff area and so we offer you the option of attending at different times to suit you. Once you have booked your block of classes we leave it to you to decide when to attend.
A lively and engaging structured class AND social time. Little Fizz combines a 40 minute structured session with social time and unstructured play afterwards. Both elements are valuable to adults and children and work

Wyburn & Wayne Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are two of the city`s premiere socialites, giving you their take on what's hot in and around Cardiff! Wyburn: What an incredible few weeks it's been for Cardiff! Especially as our amazing city hosted one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the UEFA champions league final!
Wyburn: I love him - what a voice and a great honour to watch him perform an acoustic track up close! Speaking of my faves... My ultimate number 1 artist was in town this month! The one and only ANASTACIA!
Wayne: I know, the city was absolutely buzzing with excitement! We got to have our photo taken with the cup itself down at DW Sport a few days before and took part in a fun green screen Mexican wave with Gary Lineker, which was shown on the huge screen on Westgate Street!
Wayne: St David's Hall had its roof torn off with her voice that night that's for sure! And how ace that we were asked to help bucket collect after her show for the victims of the Manchester Attack? She's such a kind lady!
Wyburn: Who'd have thought we'd have so much fun surrounding football ‘ey Wayne? We actually enjoyed the finale whilst tucking into a delicious meal with friends at Toni Amici's restaurant on Churchill Way!
Wyburn: I know, so humbling to see how she is with her other fans in the meet and greet too! I was presenting her with my glitter art to get it signed and auctioned off in aid of Cancer Research UK - she loved it and we chatted for quite some time! She's a superstar!!
Wayne: We did indeed, the food was absolutely stunning (as was the wine) and the service impeccable. I really love a unique, friendly and family run service, there's so much heart in that place! And guess what? We were also there to celebrate Stereophonics Kelly Jones' 43rd birthday!
Wayne: Not to forget a few weeks before, St David's Hall was graced with another powerful female singer - Sam Bailey! She has to be one of the best X Factor winners ever! And we managed to quickly catch up with her after the show too! I also got to cover the boxing at the Motorpoint Arena. What an experience that was being ring side for that! It's been a very sporty month for me! Our lovely friends over at Big Loop Theatre company came on to our new rebranded Radio Cardiff show to talk about their play 'Flowers' at Chapter Art which we have to say was one of the funniest two men shows we've ever been involved in!
Wyburn: And of course I presented him with one of my food artworks to celebrate; this time a very Italian PIZZA! And he loved it, he said that's certainly one thing he's never had before - he was a true gent! Still on the football topic, we got invited down to the live audience of the One Show in the Bay!
Wyburn: The Voice UK finalist and our buddy Jamie Miller also popped onto our radio show for a quick chat before jet setting off to America with his record deal, that boy is going far! Do it for Cardiff Jamie!! Now on to my favourite topicA
Wayne: It was absolutely freezing outdoors but great fun! We got to have selfies with the lovely Alex Jones, Patrick Kielty, and even one of your faves Nath, Jack Savoretti!

BUT BUT BUT... WE WENT TO THE QUEEN'S OFFICIAL ROYAL GARDEN PARTY AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE! How amazing was that Nath?
Wayne: Yourself? Wyburn: Haha no! FOOD! We enjoyed some amazing meals last month, starting off with the wonderful Cardiff Times team gathering at Lou & Mark’s house. Nordic Catering did a fantastic job of looking after us oddballs, and the food was delicious! Sarah Moussabih (the chef) is the only female in the top 40 of the country’s biggest catering competition and we highly recommended her services to anyone!
Wyburn: Aahh! A once in a lifetime experience! We were all suited and booted and absolutely loved it. We got up close with many royals including Prince Charles & Camilla, Prince Phillip and Her Royal Highness, The Queen herself! Wayne: You have to check out our video blog of the day as I can't sum up it up in words - we were very respectful but now you can take photos we surely took advantage of that. We even had a few selfies with the Yeoman - and obviously we had to take photos of the food! Check it out. A truly unforgettable day with our friends Rhian & Owen, topped off by a mad night out around Soho! Very us! CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC.
Wayne: She even cleaned the kitchen - top marks for us! I'm not a huge lover of seafood but you HAVE to try out the brand new Seafood Shack on High Street! Their opening press event was brilliant and it's not just fish either - we enjoyed some lovely chicken and even burgers! Wyburn: I love me some seafood but I have to say watching you painfully attempt to peal a large prawn was hilarious! What a great night that was. Another great new venue opened recently on our very own Wellfield Rd, it's called Protein Bar Cardiff, and no it's not all about that bulking up stuff, it's super healthy shakes and stuff too!
Cardiffian of the Month Name: Tony Curtis. Occupation: Founder & Executive Chairman of Dreams & Wishes. Favourite restaurant in Cardiff: Tony Venditos Amici. Favourite Cardiffian: Rhys Webb. He has done so much for Dreams & Wishes including meeting a little girl Daisy who sadly is no longer with us, she had a wish to meet the Welsh rugby team and she gave them all a daisy band. Rhys is still wearing it to this day and attended her funeral.
Wayne: Yeah I really enjoyed my smoothie and the guys that own it are great - have a little look and I'm sure you'll find something refreshing to enjoy! One of my favourite charity events of the month had to be the masquerade ball with Peter Karrie at City Hall. It was in aid of Dreams & Wishes and featured some top performances of West End songs, including Peter himself performing his infamous Phantom of the Opera! Wyburn: He was outstanding - and how cool I got to auction off a coffee portrait I created of him which fetched a lovely £400 for the brilliant cause too! It was also great to see our 4 competition ticket winners having such a brilliant time too! We popped away a few times last month, once was to Brighton for a few days, where we experienced the new i360 tower - that was great! Waiting for it to come down as if a UFO was descending on you haha! Wayne: Great service though and well worth the visit if you're down that way, you can see for miles! We also had a mad weekend in Butlins Minehead for our friend Sophia's 90's Hen weekend, where we dressed up as Oompa Loompas, a power ranger & a soldier! That place is just crazy! Worth it for our buddy Sophia though!

Summer evenings out: Cocktail bars Lab 22 If you are looking for a cosy place to catch up with a friend and experience something new, Lab 22 is the perfect place. As hinted by the name, this cocktail bar is focused on the chemical properties of the delicious drinks. On walking in, you will encounter test tubes, beakers, smoke and fire. The desire to keep peeking behind the bar to catch a glimpse of magic in the making is undeniable. The ‘periodic table of cocktails’ they offer is extensive and incredibly tempting. Ask for suggestions from the friendly staff, who always seem to know what you’ll enjoy the most. If you’re indecisive, you are invited to even make requests off menu. You have to try a drink from the Molecular & Dazzling page of the menu, where you’ll find the most extraordinary options, each of which is different from anything you’ve tried before and served beautifully – under a lid full of smoke, on a chemistry book, with dry ice, or with a side of a delicious treat, such as sushi or smoked cheese. On the image, you can see their Velvet Choco Chill, an incredible rum cocktail, served with dark chocolate. Fun and exciting, while also quiet enough for a quality conversation, Lab 22 is the place to be this summer. 22 Caroline St, Cardiff CF10 1FG www.lab22cardiff.com
10 Feet Tall In those evenings when you can’t quite decide what you’re in the mood for, we definitely recommend 10 Feet Tall. With three different floors, delicious food menu, DJ and live music nights, you will always find something appealing here. Whether you’d like to have a drink by the bar, grab a cosy seat and a snack on the second floor while admiring the quirky interior design, or dance at the venue upstairs (The Big Top), you are guaranteed to have a good time here. The cocktail menu includes everyone’s favourite classic cocktails. Their Cosmopolitan and White Russian are amazingly well prepared, strong, yet sweet. We, however, were most impressed with Punch of Flowers – their original gin cocktail, which is not only delicious, but beautifully decorated as well. They also have some amazing offers, such as 2 for 1 cocktails – just look for the circular symbol on the menu. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are DJ nights, while on Sundays food and drink are 50% off (unless it’s a bank holiday or major event). For more perks, you can join the Cassette Club – 10 Feet Tall’s free discount card. If you are organising a party or event, The Big Top is also available for hire on weekends. 11A-12 Church St, Cardiff, CF10 1BG http://www.10feettall.co.uk

Bootleggers Have you heard of the Prohibition era – the sad period of 14 years, during which alcohol was banned? While the prohibition was lifted on the 5th of December 1933, you can still celebrate this happy day by dancing and enjoying various liqueurs at The Bootlegger! The lovely cocktail bar, independent and Welsh family run, has a friendly and inviting atmosphere. Stop by to enjoy live music - they offer free entry all week, and the music includes swing, blues, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, with a focus on the 1920s and 30s swing and jazz scene. The liqueur selection is truly impressive. You can choose from over 80 cocktails, all of which use fresh natural ingredients, with no pre mixing. They have a delicious signature cocktails collection, as well as classics from the Prohibition era. Enjoy 2 cocktails for £10 during happy hour, which is all night from Sunday to Thursday, and between 4 and 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The specially dedicated gin bar is also definitely worth a try, and is growing it’s collection every week! 5A Womanby St, Cardiff CF10 1BR http://cardiffbootlegger.co.uk/
Mary’s Who would miss out on a spectacular night of cabaret?! Head over to Mary’s, the Cardiff premiere cabaret cocktail bar, for an extraordinary night. While Mary’s is a gay bar, anyone could have a great time here. The performers include Britain’s Got Talent’s La Voix and the winner of Drag Idol 2015, Danny Beard. Their dazzling cabaret performers are not the only thing bringing crowds of people to this bar, though. The cocktails at Mary’s are some of the best in Cardiff, with a particular favourite being their collection of Prosecco cocktails, and especially the Raspberry Le Fizz - a combination of Grancia prosecco, Grey Goose vodka, Chambord black raspberry liqueur, elderflower cordial and lime juice. You should also try their Beverly Hills Iced Tea – Bacardi, gin, tequila and Prosecco all packed together in a surprisingly delicious combination. Head over on a Tuesday after 9pm for their 2 for 1 offers, or stop by for happy hour any day between 4 and 8pm to enjoy 50% off drinks. 89 St Mary Street, Cardiff http://www.maryscardiff.co.uk/

“And Another Thing…….”
By Vince Nolan
a wedding, the newport flamingo and going private Friends 1&2: “Don’t mention it right. Your round.” Bride: “No I’m not. Oh I see what you mean7”
Fat chance. Are we still allowed to say that? We can say slim pickings, painfully thin, broad minded, tall order or short supply but fat chance, possibly not, once the politically correct do-gooders have had a think about it. Anyway, in the local pub, The Blind Tattooist, listening to a conversation. I have reverse-engineered the story to protect the innocent. A lovely petite girl sounding very depressed staring at her glass of wine with her two mates, planning the finer details of her forthcoming nuptials. It didn’t go something like this: Bride: “The thing is there are only 12 weeks to go to the wedding and I need to put on four stone by then so I can be like all my friends. My dress fits me perfectly at the moment and I don’t want to be a laughing stock.” Friend 1: “The trick is not to panic love, right. There’s still plenty of time to learn yourself to ‘ave the right level of demotivation but you ‘ave got to be a lot less disciplined. Ditch the gym and the direst coca cola and ‘ave fast food delivered to your door at regular intervals.” Friend 2: “Stop walking to work and lose the salads – oh and sell your mountain bike and buy cake with the proceeds.” Bride: “It can’t be that simple or everyone would be doing it.” Friends 1&2: “We are.” Bride: “I am also worried about my long and luxuriant naturally titian hair. How can I make that look dull and unwashed so I can be on message?” Friend 1: “OK, what it is right, you rings my ‘airdresser, Tina, she’s a marvel. She will come ‘round your ‘ouse, put the kettle on, open your fridge, ‘elp ‘erself and then learn you to understand that life is too short to ‘ave boring ‘air. Within a few weeks she will ‘ave transformed your ‘air into a mousy, greasy and unkempt thatch, just right then for putting up into a sock-bun.” Bride: “Wow, but what about my natural olive skinned complexion? It looks wrong.” Friend 2: “Don’t worry ‘bout that either love. It’s a very small step from olive to orange.” Bride: “How can I ever thank you? I don’t know what I would do without friends like you.”
A recent study found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it. Just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year. Call me stupid but shouldn't that be an even number? My son asked me what it's like to be married so I told him to leave me alone and when he did I asked him why he was ignoring me. I recently had a very pleasant afternoon out with the Leader of the Opposition at a bird sanctuary in Newport. If you don’t believe me the picture on the opposite page proves it. Anyway, having walked many miles we pitched up at the on-site café which overlooked a lake. I approached the serving area and noticed a sign which read “We stop serving hot food at 3pm.” It was 4pm and we were hungry. Unperturbed, I ordered two salads. There was a moments silence. The bewildered server said loudly and slowly: “We don’t serve hot food after 3pm” whilst pointing to the sign in case I was French. I said to her that I fully understood but did not see how salad could be mistaken for hot food. She changed tack at this point, and in the same monotone said: “We don’t serve meals after 3pm

First treatment recommended was an injection into the hip to place a slow-release steroid in the joint to ease the pain. As with any drug deal, I had to pay for the merchandise up-front. I stoically endured the iodine, anesthetic and steroid needles. She who must be obeyed was outside the room keeping an eye on the coats and the costs whilst simultaneously laughing at my pain. Meanwhile, back in the real world, my GP would not provide an introductory letter to the surgeon until he had examined me first. The only GP appointment available was some three weeks after my above visit to Flick-Knife Freddy. Crazy. Whilst waiting for the above mentioned x-ray machine to be fixed, she and I ventured into the pub adjacent to the hospital, The Scabies and Scalpel. We ordered two ploughman’s lunches despite it being teatime. I found myself wondering what a ploughman had for tea and whether there were any plough-women? Anyway, I thought the barman misheard me because he thought I had ordered two ploughman’s burgers. Apparently these come with chips and involve throwing a cheeseburger at some thick-cooked ham and a Smorgasbord of salad of varying hues. I disabused him of the notion that we would order and then eat such cholesterol loaded victuals. Having then been served with standard ploughman’s fayre we were treated to complete strangers walking past looking at our plates as if there was something wrong with us. Fat chance!
but you can have cake” (whilst not pointing at any sign). We didn’t have any cake. Having written about recent interactions with the NHS and the pressures it faces I was looking forward to a consultation at a private hospital. No waiting list and straight in to see the top gammy leg surgeon. A close examination confirmed the presence of my gammy leg and I was sent off for instant x-rays and then back to see the Top Knife Johnny for the next painful steps. Paid him on the way to x-ray and for the x-rays on my arrival at their department.
And finally...in this month’s understanding technology spot:
After a bit of a wait, which I was not charged for, I was told that the x-ray machine was being mended (such are the pressures on the private sector). I was encouraged to return later that day. I asked whether the Chief Cutter would still be in residence on my return and was informed that he would. Later that day it was on with the backward facing fully-ventilated gown and onto a cold x-ray table for some pictures. These were unanimous, I had a gammy leg.
Bye for now chums

paw-lease help arc cat rescue centre By Anna Mason had she not long given birth, but Sasha had come in to the centre pregnant again!
I have worked with animals all my life and have recently opened a cat rescue centre called ARC. I help stray, abandoned, abused and feral cats and kittens in South Glamorgan. We have rehomed 45 cats in the last month and at present have 42 cats and kittens in care, all looking for homes.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when cats are not neutered and spayed and although new born kittens are cute as buttons, the whole experience of conception, pregnancy, giving birth and raising kittens is extremely stressful and difficult for the mother.
I have found cats in appalling situations. Some have been tied up in carrier bags then dumped in the rubbish, some have been covered in bleach, some had been shot and others have given birth in the rain. So many cats are dumped, with an average of over 3,000 a year.
For Sasha this would have been especially difficult due to the fact she is so young. Sasha recently gave birth to nine kittens, five of which we believe to be from a previous pregnancy, and neither survived due to being infected. Fortunately, we did manage to save two of the nine kittens, which were delivered by C section.
Unfortunately, there are only three rescue centres that operate within the area. The RSPCA do not help with stray cats and this has left a financial burden on myself with vet bills alone costing £1,500 a month.
Sasha is recovering well on her antibiotics and is getting plenty of tlc. Despite what she has been through in her short life, Sasha is the most friendly and affectionate cat and will soon be able to finally be loved. Sadly, she is just one story of over twenty stories a week and we need your help, however big or small, to help those suffering.
ARC is a Cardiff based cat rescue and is run by myself, Anna Mason. I work tirelessly to rescue sick or abandoned cats and kittens with the hope of finding them all loving, forever homes. I have built up a team of helpers who I appreciate so much. Without them and the kind support of the public I would not exist. If you would like to help ARC with their amazing work, you can make donations as follows:
We will be hosting a fashion show on the 9th of July at Roath Church House to raise funds for the ARC Rescue Centre. Keep up to date with our rescue stories via: Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/annarescue/ Online: annasrescuecentre.weebly.com Instagram: @annasrescuecentre
• Easy fundraising page: look for ‘ARC Anna’s Rescue Centre’ • Amazon: you can purchase items from the ARC wishlist, which gets delivered directly where it's needed and frees up funds for vets bills and other supplies

I wish to give a million thank yous for your continued support. Every penny goes towards care of the cats, including veterinary bills, medical supplies and other essentials. I would like to share the story of Sasha who is currently being looked after at a centre in Rumney, Cardiff. She came in to the centre around two months ago as a stray with two beautiful but undernourished 7 week old kittens. She is only a baby herself and required the full care and attention of the team. After a routine visit to the vets we were all shocked to find out that not only

dining at home is just fine... By Sarah-Jane Outten
Continuing her series of articles exploring small businesses and entrepreneurs in Cardiff, this month Sarah-Jane sits down with the Cardiff Times team for an evening of culinary goodness courtesy of La Belle Assiette. This month the talent came to us! Quite literally. The Cardiff Times family got together this month, it’s something that we don’t often get chance to do, so it’s more reason to make the most of it when the chance comes along. And this month we were really
spoilt by a fine dining experience at home.
them around the kitchen and they do the rest!
Mark and Louise kindly invited us into their home for possibly one of the most scrumptious meals I’ve ever had. Mark and Louise invested the help from La Belle Assiette. Through them, you can hire a private chef. Your chef will arrive at your home, approximately 2 hours before you would like your meal served. They bring everything that is required, you don’t need to worry about shopping for ingredients or planning a dinner party menu; that is all done for you. You show
The idea is brilliant on so many levels. Maybe you aren’t a confident chef, but you would like to entertain and impress your guests. You might have young children and no babysitter, this way you can enjoy a beautiful meal in the comfort of your own home. Freshly prepared and served to you in the same way as it would be in a restaurant. Whatever your reasons are, it’s a service well worth taking advantage of.

Our chef was the very lovely Sarah Moussabih from Nordic Catering. Sarah is the only female in the line-up for The National Chef of the Year award. After sampling her culinary skills, it was easy to see why she is in the running for this prestigious award. Our Nordic evening started with a creamy salmon soup with homemade oat and rye bread. This was the best soup I have ever tasted! It was fresh and bursting with flavour. Spring salad with smoked vegetables followed, it was a beautifully light course with some incredibly tasty croutons that made it extra special. Then on to our main, duck 2-ways with onions and cherries. The duck was succulent and cooked to perfection. Lastly, there was a choice of two desserts. Chocolate coffee cake with latte ice cream or rhubarb tart with white chocolate. I chose the chocolate coffee cake and I can honestly say it was like the best kind of comfort food. It was wonderfully indulgent and incredibly satisfying! As well as Sarah working hard in the kitchen, Jenny her assistant worked hard at keeping all of us happy. Always on hand, Jenny served our meals and kept our wine glasses topped up. Nothing was too much trouble. This attention to detail is what gave La Belle Assiette the edge over a restaurant. Not to mention the fact that the washing up was also taken care of by Sarah. You can sit back, relax and enjoy an evening of scrumptious food. It is fair to say that the whole Cardiff Times team were blown away by the quality of the food that Sarah had prepared. Clean plates all round! We can’t recommend La Belle Assiette enough. bee friendly cardiff By Bryony Haynes
What does it take to become a Bee Friendly city? Cardiff’s Friends of the Earth group have just launched a Bee Friendly Cardiff project to make Cardiff officially Bee Friendly. The project is aimed at communities, schools, organisations and others to take a few simple steps to encourage and protect bees and other pollinators and then apply for accreditation from the Welsh Government as an official ‘Bee Friendly’ place. To kick-start local groups in Cardiff, Bleddyn Lake has been appointed as the “Bee Champion” to provide advice in helping complete a set of actions to help pollinators from 4 distinct categories: food, habitat, community involvement and pesticides. Once accreditation has been granted, the organisation can officially call itself ‘Bee Friendly’.
sage and thyme, bushy plants like lavender, trees like willow or easy edibles like tomatoes. • Build a bee hotel for solitary bees whose habitats have been mostly destroyed. There are many available from garden shops and online, but bear in mind that the depth of the tubes should be at least 100 mm and the diameter should be between 6 and 10 mm.
What’s happening to our bees and why? Bees in the UK are declining at a worrying rate, with even managed bee colonies falling by 53% between 1985 and 2005. Changes to agriculture is widely recognised as being the main cause of this, due to the trend in growing the same crop over large fields. By reducing the diversity of flowers available, species that have specialised food needs are being particularly hard hit. The chemicals found in fertilisers and herbicides also limits a source of food for bees by removing certain flowering plants. In addition, there is growing evidence that pesticides may be affecting bee health, particularly solitary bees – which account for just under 250 of the 275 British bee species.
• Spread the bee message throughout your local community by taking a bee walk. Stroll around your area to see if local parks and open spaces are managed in a bee friendly way. Insects prefer long grass – could the local park keep some areas uncut? Are there a range of flowers available? It may be useful to invite your local counsellor or MP to demonstrate to them how to make these outdoor places better for our bees and for us.
Bee brilliance
What can I do?
• Provide a bee breakfast. What’s your usual breakfast of choice? Fresh fruit? A side of tomatoes with your fry up? Jam on toast? A striking tactic is to invite people to have breakfast with you, but instead of serving these delicious foods, give them bland food which is not pollinated by bees. Just as they’re trying to hide their disappointment, reveal the vast array of food that is pollinated by bees to highlight what yummy items there might be less of with fewer bees around.
• Time to start planting! Hanging baskets are just as useful as gardens if you don’t have one. The key is to choose a range of plants that provide a succession of flowers from very early spring until early winter - which is when the bees need nectar. You could try herbs like
For more information on bees, visit www.foe.co.uk/ bees or contact Bleddyn Lake at : bleddyn.lake@foe.co.uk on gaining your own Bee Friendly accreditation. Join the generation that saves our bees!
It is easy to assume that bees just provide us with honey, but in fact they’re essential to pollinating 75% of the world’s most important crops, including most fruits and vegetables. Without them, our food is under threat as well as our economy, costing at least £1.8 billion a year to replace bee services with hand pollination.

classrooms in the clouds By Michael James
It is from this background that 'Classrooms in the Clouds', or as it is known, CitC, has been formed. CitC was created in 2006 and became a registered charity in 2007. It is inspired by its Nepali Trustee, Dawa Galjen Sherpa. Dawa was raised in Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region, and ran away to go to school when only 11 years old. He is passionate about improving the education opportunities for young people in Nepal and ensuring that the remote rural communities survive.
During my 'Trek of Hope' in the Himalayas in 2014, and on my recent return to see how the terrible earthquake during the following year had effected the Leprosy Mission hospital I visited, I must admit to having fallen in love with Nepal and it's gentle, loving and nearly always smiling people.
I first met Dawa when he was the Head Guide on the Trek I undertook, and as well as being a strong support to my fellow trekkers and myself, I found him to be a very inspiring and likeable character. While his main role in life is as an experienced mountain Sherpa leading trekking expeditions, he is very involved in promoting awareness of the work and aims of 'Classrooms in the Clouds' (CitC).
Nepal is a relatively small but beautiful country with a huge diversity of natural features which, due to it's unique geography, presents many difficulties while still providing the most majestic and beautiful mountain ranges with the highest peaks in the world, including, of course, Mount Everest. Unfortunately, the very same geography means that it is vulnerable to earthquakes and has a dysfunctional infrastructure which makes travel outside it's capital, Kathmandu, difficult, especially in the mountains to the remote villages. The Nepalese people suffer with significant heath issues, and its literacy rates are particularly poor with children who have to walk to the few state schools in the area. In many cases this can sometimes involve a round trip of between 3 - 4 miles each day, over steep, rough dirt tracks and often in very bad weather.
Last November, I spent a happy evening with him in Kathmandu, having a meal together and reminiscing over the joys and difficulties of our Trek and he also told me of the horrors which befell the remote rural mountain villages as a result of the earthquake. As the evening went on he told me how, together with like minded others, he has become so committed to getting education to these local children to give them a fair start in life. To my amazement, I discovered that he was actually flying to the UK the following morning to attend meetings in London and, would you believe it, to spend a few days visiting a Primary School in Bridgend, which supports the aims of CitC. Although, sadly, we were not on the same flight, I was able to spend more time with him when he arrived in Wales to discover more about his work and ambitions.
Many children are unable to complete their education, or even start school, because they are required to work on their family's land or find some other means of earning money to help support their family. Some of the lucky ones, whose families can afford it, are often sent to boarding schools in Kathmandu but many don't return home afterwards. The combined effect of these actions is to weaken local communities and threaten the traditions and way of life that have existed for centuries.
CitC original plan was to raise money to build just two classrooms at a school in the village of Lukla, and it has steadily grown in confidence to be able to deliver a rolling three year plan for their projects. CitC has now built over 40 classrooms in 5

different locations, with toilet and hygiene facilities, three libraries and one IT Suite. It sponsors ten teachers and employs two local Nepalese as an Education Development Manager and Education Support Worker. Particular emphasis is given to support women in education (8 of 10 sponsored teachers are women who provide excellent role models for young girls), as a means of addressing some of the barriers that exist for them in completing their education.
internationally who offer funding for this work and provides opportunities for Nepalese teachers to expand their knowledge and to sponsor other teachers wanting to experience overseas work to further their careers while providing valuable help to the local children. CitC welcomes the opportunity to meet more potential supporters to explain its work and ambitions, and if you feel that you are able to help, or perhaps even volunteer as a teacher, it would be happy to hear from you.
Last year, more classrooms and gender specific toilets were built and more are being planned within the next three years, together with sponsoring the appropriate number of teachers. This work is mainly in the remote rural mountain area of lower Solu Khumbu, usually away from the established main tourist routes and 'below the radar', of many NGO's. 'Classrooms in the Clouds' is itself a registered NGO in Nepal and is also a registered UK Charity. It is totally run by volunteers, and CitC and it's Trustees regularly visit Nepal as part of their own commitment and trek out to the communities in which the schools are situated. In doing this they gain first-hand experience of the challenges faced by the local people and continue to receive petitions asking for assistance, which means that almost all of its funds are spent in Nepal in areas where CitC considers it is most needed.
Perhaps one of our local schools might consider 'Classrooms in the Clouds' to be a project that they would like to work with, or even have a 'twinning' relationship with one of these Nepali Schools. If so, for further information and news of partnerships, sponsorship, volunteers or job opportunities, please go to: mike.hagen@classroomintheclouds.org or ring Sarah on 07855507398, or ring me, Michael on 029 2075 3149. I know that Dawa and all those working with CitC, would like me to thank you for taking the time to read about their hopes for the children in this lovely, if remote and often forgotten part of the world. May God Bless them and you. Thank you!
This is an ambitious programme which requires dedication and expert support and direction as it is the philosophy of CitC to build 'capacity' in Nepal. This has the added benefit of developing skills from within the country and encourages ownership and sustainability over the long term. It's ambition is to provide some 10,000 plus places for children in these remote, mountainous areas, to have an education over the next five years. To do this CitC has now developed strong partnerships with many individuals and organisations

new link wales do their annual pantomime: a-lad-in-a talent contest By Aaliyah Buchanan From the very first moment that I got the chance to meet these wonderful people I was overwhelmed by the sense of unity that runs through this charity. I was also extremely impressed by the strength and courage within the people that I met, as taking that first step and admitting you need help is one of the toughest steps on the journey to recovery. I know many people that are very dear to me that have been directly or indirectly affected by mental health or substance misuse issues, and to see a charity like New Link Wales work continuously to try and break through the misconception around these issues and try and help people move past them is something that has really moved me.
A spin off of the classic Aladdin tale, with more glitter and more laughter, and it is set in Wales, I don’t think it gets any better than this. I got the opportunity to previously visit New Link Wales, a well-being charity located in Cardiff that supports people from all walks of life who suffer with a range of mental health and substance misuse issues. When I last visited them I got the chance to talk to a couple of the people that work at the charity, who dedicate their lives to this important work. I was also able to talk to Ruth, a service user who told me about all of the ways in which this charity has affected her life for the better. After meeting the professionals and service users, they invited me to go and see their annual pantomime that they created and were going to perform themselves, the previously mentioned Aladdin. Straight away I was very keen to see this production, as I was also lucky enough to sit in on one of their rehearsals and knew that it had great potential to thrill their audiences. I have to say I was not disappointed.
I encourage anyone who would like to get involved with this charity or someone out there who is reading this and knows someone or they need help themselves, to get in contact with New Link Wales. The work this charity does to help the lives of many is absolutely amazing and you will always find a family and home at New Link Wales. If you would like to learn more about this charity and the wonderful work it does, please follow this link: https://www.newlinkwales.org.uk/
I went to go and see this fantastic production on June 15th this year, which was opening night. From the very moment that the curtain opened they had audiences laughing and cheering, they even had us to doing the YMCA and cheering chants in Welsh (but I’ll save myself the embarrassment and won’t talk too much about that). I absolutely love pantomimes and this production made me love them even more. I think it is also very important to mention that none of the people that took part in the pantomime are professional actors. Their only experience of getting onto a stage is through this charity’s annual pantomime, so I would like to congratulate them on their fantastic acting and their capability to get me to do the YMCA0this never happens.

RESIDENTS ENJOY NATIONAL CARE OPEN DAY Residents from a Cardiff care home and their friends and family enjoyed a fun-filled day as part of National Care Home Open Day last month. Tŷ Llandaff, an all-inclusive care home which offers nursing, residential and respite care in Conway Road, Pontcanna, joined thousands of other care homes across the country taking part in the UK-wide initiative. The idea behind National Care Home Open Day is to encourage local people to visit care homes in the community and work together to build long lasting relationships. Tŷ Llandaff, a private care home with 70 bedroom suites, opened in January 2017 and has the ability to accommodate people for nursing or residential care from the age of 18. It also offers short-term respite care for individuals looking for a place to recuperate after surgery or illness. The suggested theme in 2017 for National Care Home Open Day was ‘friendship’, so Janice Evans, manager at Tŷ Llandaff, and her team arranged a free day of entertainment, including a singer and pianists, and a buffet lunch with refreshments which was open to the local community. Janice said: “National Care Home Open Day is all about connecting with the local community so we are very proud to have held our first one at Tŷ Llandaff. The day also gave us the opportunity to highlight what Tŷ Llandaff can do within the Cardiff community. It was fabulous day overall.”

when pigs fly By Jamie L. Harding
Picture the scene: it’s late, and my other half and I are all settled in bed ready for sleep. We kiss goodnight, turn out the lights and close our eyes, and then after a few moments of silence I ask the room aloud ‘Were pigs ever expected to fly?’
traffic controllers hogging up the radios with enquiries about how the pilots manage it, but there is definitely something to be gained from allowing ourselves to wonder sometimes. Some of the greatest conversations often occur when friends – or even strangers - are drunk together; when their inhibitions reduce and they just aren’t afraid anymore to voice aloud whatever musings have been keeping them up at night. These are conversations where the topics can include absolutely anything, with no fear of judgement. They are great, honest wonderings that sometimes don’t even have an answer – it is purely the joy of the question and the subsequent thought processes which justify them.
By now, she’s learnt to ignore me and pretend to be asleep, but were they? Why is that even a thing? There must be a reason, right? As a kid, I was always asking questions. Why is snow white? Why is Snow White called Snow White? How tall is that building? How tall is that building? Why do grown-ups drink so much? Why is that homeless man shouting at a pigeon?
Allow me to provide you with some examples. Just sit for a moment, finish this article and consider them. Maybe even ask someone what their thoughts are on one – ask your other half when they’re just about to fall asleep, maybe. Either way, I guarantee you it will be an interesting conversation.
My parents always did their best to give me some answers – whether the real ones or the softened approach – or, as my father was accustomed, the funny ones. ‘Well the pigeon owes him money, see, and the pigeon won’t pay.’ Over the years you start learning things. You find the answers yourselves or you find out where they can be found – or, you just stop asking. Worries over bills and jobs and relationships soon dwarf the possibility that a bird might be acting a bit tight. As we grow older we generally become more matter-of-fact. We prioritise the answers we need, and we ask only those questions we hope won’t make us look a fool. That youthful innocence that allowed us to ponder aloud anything which comes to mind is slowly worn away by the conventions of society – and that’s a shame, I think.
• Why are oranges orange? • Why did Kamikaze Pilots wear helmets? • If water is transparent, why do we see clouds? • What is a picture of a thousand words worth? • Why are they called fish fingers? The reason I’m writing this, I suppose, is either to reach out in the hope that I’m not the only one dreaming up such random reflections each night, or to instigate it. The world is an interesting place – we’re born into it captivated – and we shouldn’t lose that sense of wonder. Dare to dream a little. It really is worth it, and if anyone ever asks you when you’ll stop being so weird?
Don’t get me wrong, I get that there’s a time and a place. I don’t want surgeons chatting about why water is wet mid-operation, and I wouldn’t want air
Tell them when pigs fly.
