Hi All, and welcome to our September issue, which is a very special one for Mark and I as it`s our 100th!!. Can you believe it, 100 editions of the magazine, which we honestly thought we`d never get to this milestone when we produced our very first edition over 8 years ago. Despite suffering a few setbacks, mishaps and disagreements along the way, we have steadily grown the magazine to what it is today, a successful publication which appeals to a very varied readership. It would be impossible to thank every single advertiser and contributor who has appeared in the magazine over the last eight years or so, suffice to say we are grateful to each and every one of you for contributing, for without you there would not be a Cardiff Times. Alongside frantically trying to finish this edition before we go on holiday, Louise and I have been reminiscing at how fast the time has gone since our first edition. We have seen our son grow from a very cute one year to a handsome and still cute nine year old, while welcoming a beautiful and feisty six year old girl into our lives! We`ve also been looking through some of our previous editions, (yes all 99 of them!), to see if there are any advertisers who have appeared in each and every edition. Incredibly, there are three businesses who have, AGS Plastering, Kumon and Stewart Greenberg, thank you so much for your continued loyalty, it means an awful lot to us. Looking at our very first edition, (which actually was named Community Times Cardiff East would you believe), and comparing it to what the magazine looks like now, it is like looking at two completely different publications, such has been the transformation! Mark and I are incredibly proud to be the editors of Cardiff Times, to make a difference, even a small one, is very satisfying, and so here`s to the next 100 editions!

‘alright butty’ By Wyn Evans midwives sometimes explicitly advise that having such a child will be a burden; that it will have a painful and unproductive life; that the costs will be extreme. Senior policy-makers are busy planning a future 'world without Downs' in your names. Surveys, that I have previously cited here, show that ninety-eight percent of people with DS are happy with their lives. Parents, siblings, friends, and families of people with DS tell of the contributions made by those with DS. Regular readers of this column have for four years now followed the love and mischief that The Girl brings to her family and friends. She has nearly seventy thousand followers on my Facebook Blog(1), who tune-in regularly for updates about her exploits.

The Girl, my daughter, who happens to have Down Syndrome (DS) has just stepped out of our car and into the arms of L, a woman she loves very much, who is not her mother. It is the start of the third week of our summer holiday and The Girl is on her way to Aberystwyth to stay with the family of her best friend, also 11. We meet in the car park of Glangwili Hospital, in Carmarthen, it being roughly half way between her starting point and destination. I love seeing L and my daughter together. If something happens to The Boss and me, this family will play an important ongoing role in The Girl's life. Their joy and affection in one another's company is sincere and unbridled and the next five days promise to be yet another highlight in what is turning out to be a happy and busy vacation. First she attended a sports and speech therapy camp - an odd combination but one that worked very well. There followed a ballet summer school which closed with a concert for parents that showed just how much the kids had come on over twelve months.

Yet the official and international response is to regard DS as an expensive problem, one that can be eradicated as, say, smallpox can be eradicated, which is surely a category mistake. Yet "for a baby born with Down Syndrome today, the outlook has never been better. Medical and social advances have radically changed what it means to live with a disability such as Down Syndrome. They live healthier, longer and increasingly independent lives. They are university students, councillors, actors, models, and restaurant-owners" (2).

Now, week three and the shingly beach at Aberystwyth beckons. We enter the hospital coffee shop for a cup of - naturally! - tea. L looks at The Girl and her own daughter chatting away happily to each other. Her daughter also has DS. L says to them: "in a few years you girls will be making these journeys on your own, by train or bus..." "...or they'll drive", I interject. We two adults smile knowingly at each other2

... All of which explains the knowing look that L and I shared. We have learned never to underestimate our daughters and have little doubt that by the time they come of age they will be taking independent journeys to places a lot further away than Aberystwyth. For my part, I have been following the stories of adults with DS who have earned degrees, passed their driving tests, married and had kids. If The Girl sets her mind to passing a driving test, I have little doubt that she will in due course succeed.

I can't help thinking back to The Boss's pregnancy. Many clinicians upset us by constantly 'asking' us (in a way that felt more like an instruction) to consider amniocentesis, to rule out 'the risk' of having a child with DS. That this would only 'rule out' our child having DS if the result of the amnio led to our having an abortion, seemed lost upon them. This concept of DS being a 'risk' was to come up time and again. Let me be clear. There will always be cases of DS in the human family. It is also known as 'Trisomy 21', because it is marked by there being an extra copy of chromosome number 21. This is a perfectly natural occurrence. It is as much a part of what it is to be human as not having an extra copy. Women will continue to conceive babies with DS.

After returning from mid-Wales, The Girl and I ordered her new spectacles and placed a deposit on our new car, a Mini Clubman Estate, which is likely to be driving the streets of Penylan by the time you read this. In fact, it's more likely that we will be navigating the roads of Llandaff; I'm happy to report that The Girl has settled into our temporary lodgings here as if to the manor born. I imagine that she will be almost as disappointed to be leaving here for our new home in Cyncoed as she will be excited to move in.

What differs is the response to this perfectly natural human condition. During pregnancy, medics and

Commenting on this online, I received the following advice, which I share with you almost as an act of public service. It comes from an ex-member of the special forces: "I understand your worries, especially with [your daughter] in tow but in situations like that just avoid eye contact and answer any comment with a cheery "Alright Butty" and walk on. If asked for anything just shrug and say 'sorry , I don't smoke -got no money with me', or a suitable, non-committal answer. Don't give them any way of engaging you in conversation, and try not to appear nervous. Easier said than done but it works ninety-nine percent of the time".

Ourselves apart, there are never fewer than three other adults in attendance and often as many as seven. In a situation that might have overwhelmed her, the opposite has happened. The Girl has become the life and soul of the place, charming our landlord and his regulars with stories, dances, and laughter. To quote them, "she is wonderful", and her regular welcome call of "hi guys!" usually solicits a bout of laughter and teasing. This summer, we have seen her grow emotionally and physically before our eyes. Week four of the holidays ended with The Girl and I taking a trip into town last Friday afternoon. What has happened to Queen Street? We arrived at 1600 hours, to buy a voucher for a friend's 11th birthday. Having parked in the NCP in Westgate Street, we entered the lift. In it was a bearded, 6'3" man glass-eyed with body-odour. We three got out of the lift and passed the ground floor pay-station, where he lay down on a sleeping-bag, joining another man with a sleeping-bag.

A part of me, a large part of me, is happy that my Girl is still a few years away from having to navigate the unpleasant aspects of city life by herself. It gives me plenty of time to help her hone her 'Alright Butty' followed by walking on by. Footnotes 1. https://www.facebook.com/BeatingDownsBarriers/ 2.Summed-up powerfully by Renate Lindeman here http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dearfreedom_us_5936ba8be4b0cca4f42d9d78

We walked through the High Street arcade, from where we ran a gamut of late-teen/twenties men just generally scowling and raising their chins whilst muttering at us. Passing the Burger King and McDonalds, we saw (and gave a wide-berth to) a group of lads surrounding a 30s man and demanding "an apology for insulting" the chief-protagonist's brother. Two police Constables were moving-in quickly to break it up. In many doorways were men and an occasional woman or girl who were either stoned or drunk. All this was unnerving and unpleasant given the reported incidence of knife crime. I gave up on St Mary Street late at night some years ago. There was just too much chance of being a victim of random violence or vomit. But now? Westgate Street and Queen Street in mid-afternoon?

help! what can i do about unsightly thread veins on the face? Small, broken veins on the face or a general flushed redness resulting from roseacea are a common complaint that we see in clinic. Although they can affect both men and women, the latter are more susceptible as oestrogen and other female hormones affect blood vessel growth. Anything that affects the hormone levels, such as pregnancy, the menopause and medication such as hormone replacement therapy or birth control, can make you more prone to developing thread veins, but, don’t worry, there are facial vessel removal treatments that can produce highly satisfactory results, with minimal downtime and complications.

without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. The vein is then broken down and absorbed by the body. This means we can deliver a very targeted facial vessel removal treatment with minimal chance of scarring.

1. Prevention is better than cure

We also offer the bespoke Universkin serums which we tailor for each individual patient’s concerns. Rosacea patients often react to the preservatives that are used in many facial skincare products and these serums are all preservative-free. They also contain an active ingredient called Rutin which has a vasoconstrictive effect on blood vessels, visibly and quickly reducing the appearance of facial flushing.

Rosacea is a slightly more challenging condition and facial flushing can be accompanied by papules and pustules. A dermatologist that is experienced in treating all skin conditions can prescribe antibiotics to control rosacea. Patients with rosacea have very sensitive skin, so we use mild facial washes and facial creams from the NeoStrata range that are non-irritant.

Broken capillaries on the face, typically on the cheeks and nose, are mainly caused by weathering and sun damage. Ultraviolet rays cause the tiny blood vessels under the skin’s surface to dilate and constrict quickly and they can tear. As we age, the skin thins and this can make the marks more visible. Wearing high factor sun protector all year round is key, but there are also other factors, include alcohol consumption or our diet, that can cause the blood vessels to dilate and, over time, thread veins to appear.

Facial veins are rarely harmful, but they can make sufferers feel very conscious about their appearance. Facial vessel removal is relatively quick and effective and results are highly satisfactory. For more information, call 02920 617690 to book a consultation.

2. Be gentle Do not try and ‘scrub’ them away; anything that damages the top layer of the skin such as aggressive scrubs and exfoliators or treatments like microdermabrasion will not improve the appearance of facial veins and may make them appear worse. Facial vessel removal treatments work by treating the veins under the surface of the skin.

3. See a specialist If you’re bothered by thread veins on the face, then they can be treated very effectively. Pulsed dye and KTP lasers can produce excellent facial vessel removal results. Both lasers work in a similar way; the laser energy is attracted to the colour of the facial vessel, heating the vein

the power of comedy! By Billy Jones R. C. Sherriff’s brilliant play Journey’s End finds itself in similar circumstances, only this time in the First World War. The play was a vehicle for using comedy as a way to make light of dark circumstances.

Calling all comedy lovers! The coming months are going to truly tickle your fancy. With the likes of comedians such as Russell Brand and Ed Byrne gracing Cardiff’s stages, who wouldn’t be desperate for the arrival of their tour dates?

Comedy acts as a great remedy for the times that we’ve felt humiliated. I once stumbled off the stage during my Year 6 Primary School Christmas play. Though deeply embarrassing at the time, (I received some harmless mockery about it for some years after), I can throw my head back and laugh about it now. Finding yourself comical can be seen as a token of maturity. It means being able to highlight your own faults without feeling too defensive about them.

Many months ago, I was surprised with tickets to see two comics who have me in stitches, Joel Dommett and Greg Davies; both are performing in Cardiff in October and November. As the dates draw closer, my excitement is beginning to hit the roof! So, it got me wondering why it was making me, and undoubtedly many others, feel this way. I couldn’t help but question what role comedy plays in the world, and the power it holds1 We tend to think of comedy as a way to relax and unwind, but the job of a comic, whether they know it or not, is actually quite a serious one. Not only are they important to our mental wellbeing, they communicate honestly with our society as a whole. Back in the day, Court Jesters, whose job it was to bring kings and queens out of the political headspace, brought plenty of laughter and joy! This makes one assume that comedy is somewhat of a requirement, like paying a trip to see our beloved dentist or trotting around Tesco to do a weekly food shop!

It bridges the gap between the ‘average Joe’ and those with power. Comedy is often used as a tool to give very substantial yet constructive feedback to those who have power or those who we perceive to be smarter, stronger or simply more confident than ourselves. Monty Python does this brilliantly with their philosopher’s football match sketch. It’s entertaining as it’s very easy to fall victim to intellectual bullies, yet in this sketch we witness some of the greatest minds in history, such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer, portrayed as being amateur at football.

Humour is the mother of all medicine, particularly for the modern world against despair and grief. Much of the humour we see today expresses what it means to be human. Death and depression are serious topics but rather than reconciling us to them, comedy helps us to feel cockily defiant and strong about these issues instead. Needless to say, adopting a comedic attitude won’t prevent misery. When we bring a touch of defiance into the mix, we can laugh our way through some of the hardest parts of life, rather than feeling run over under the pressure of them.

So, next time you’re rolling in the aisles at a live show, or feasting your eyes upon a comedic performance on TV and happen to be sliding off the sofa in hysterics, make sure to thrive off of the atmosphere in the moment, without distractions. The enjoyment of comedy does stem from being present and also by appreciating the type of humour for what it is. Laughter is a must, while it boosts endorphins, it also works wonders as a stress preventative – we could all benefit from a little hilarity!

Even in 1940, a time when Britain found itself in a precarious military position, and while the power of the enemy was known and all too apparent, a song came into circulation that mocked the Nazi leaders – “Hitler has only got one1” you know the rest! The point was quite simple: to boost the morale of the British troops by helping them feel defiant. Mocking the dangerous helped to motive them. Perhaps this is a lesson that we could all adopt in certain situations in our lives.

Have you ever thought about having a professional photography session? Katie Barrett is a well-established family photographer who covers South Wales. She specialises in child and family photography, and also now does weddings! A session with her is not about forced poses, formal clothes and “cheesy” smiles. It’s about having a good time and making memories. Talking, playing and, above all, having fun! With a strong belief that the best images are achieved in a comfortable and familiar setting, a session with Katie takes place in your home or at a location that’s special to you. the friends of nant fawr community woodlands The Nant Fawr Community Woodlands consists of 100 acres which forms a narrow green corridor between Roath Park Lake and fields adjoining the reservoirs of Llanishen and Lisvane. It includes a variety of habitats including: 40 acres of woodland, 20 acres of parkland and 40 acres of wild flower meadows, as well as the Nant Fawr (“big stream/ brook”) itself. The stream runs down from Cefn Onn ridge, through the woodlands and into Roath Park, before joining the River Rumney on its journey to the sea.

enthusiasts, and we carry out biodiversity surveys. For those who enjoy “geocaching” there are 5 of these along the trail. We have also given talks in schools and a local Care Home. The Green Flag Community Award was recently awarded to the Friends of Nant Fawr Community Woodlands for our work in the local environment; this award is delivered in Wales by the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from the Welsh Government. It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.

The area is maintained by the Council with the help of a Friends Group which was formed in 1993, at which time they were responsible for the building of the paths which allowed the area to be accessible to the whole community. Over the years, the Friends have worked for two hours a month performing tasks such as path maintenance, stream cleaning, coppicing, litter picking, hedge laying, cutting back overgrowth, painting etc. We have also taken on major projects and this year we have been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to provide 7 new notice-boards at entrances to the site.

We run a blog: http://friends-of-nantfawr.blogspot.co.uk/. This is used to record all events and activities but is also a home for many resources which can be downloaded for free. There are copies of the Explorer Trail, a Scavenger Hunt and identification keys. There is also information about the history of the area, species lists from surveys and details of future work days and events. You can even become members for the very reasonable cost of £3 per household!

We also work to maintain and improve the biodiversity of the site, and to improve public awareness of this valuable local amenity. To this end, we work with 6 local Junior and High schools and provide opportunities for the local Duke of Edinburgh Award and Welsh Baccalaureate pupils to achieve their hours of voluntary work. In recent years we have planted two orchards, a border for pollinators, trees and bulbs at entrances with the children, as well as work sessions cutting back vegetation. An orienteering course and an Explorer Trail have been created, and each summer there is a Family Fun Day. We help organise guided walks by the Park Ranger and other knowledgeable

The area is very popular with dog walkers and ramblers; the top end of the trail joins the public footpath which leads to Lisvane (and a pub!). All we ask is that you respect the area, take rubbish home and dispose of dog poo appropriately, and report any anti-social behaviour to the Police (dial 101). We are always keen to welcome new volunteers; just turn up to one of the work days. There are activities for all abilities and ages – under 16s are welcome with a supervising adult. Why not start with our Hayrake on Sunday, 24th September? We shall be meeting by the Bridge at Heol Esgyn at 10 am. See you there!

Wyburn & Wayne Nathan Wyburn and Wayne Courtney are two of the city`s premiere socialites, giving you their take on what's hot in and around Cardiff!

Wayne: Yeah it was beautiful and so was she. We had a lovely time celebrating their big day at The Vale Resort.

Wayne: Another fun packed month, there was so much going on in Cardiff during the summer.

Wyburn: Such a lovely day. How funny was it that you took to the grand piano and sang ‘Candle In The Wind’ plonking away at a piano that didn't even work! Everyone was laughing.

Wyburn: Yes it's been great, and so many shows and concerts taking place, it's why we love this city so much.

Wayne: I blame the vodka!

Wayne: The Wales Millennium Centre have had some awesome shows this summer and the highlights for me were The Addams Family and everyone's favourite, Hairspray.

Wyburn: Had some great trips out of Cardiff last month too. It was so much fun covering The London Comic Con where I got to meet and (you've guessed it!), present a portrait to one of my idols Alyson Hannigan, famous for films like American Pie, but for me she will always be Willow from Buffy.

Wyburn: I got to present Samantha Womack with a portrait backstage after the 100th performance of The Addams Family which was an incredible experience. I've been a huge fan of hers for years and she was so lovely.

Wayne: Yes, we're both huge fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer so that was a huge thrill. We also met her husband, who was also in Buffy, and I did laugh when you told him you sleep with his wife every night.

Wayne: And you presented Layton Williams, who played Seaweed in Hairspray, with a portrait. You were on an ‘art attack’ of your own last month! Everyone has had portraits.

Wyburn: Haha yes, but I was referring to the tattoo I have of her on my leg.

Wyburn: Haha I know, but my favourite had to be the wedding portrait I created for our best buddy Sophia as a wedding gift.

Wayne: They loved the tattoo, I told them a little white lie and said I was the tattooist, she was very impressed. My bad!

Wyburn: It was great to be involved with the music video for the great new charity single by Hegsy and the Elements, ‘Kick It Off With The Hoff’, raising money for the cystic fibrosis charity Inhale The Music. Wayne: Filming on Roath Rec in the freezing cold, running around like idiots but great fun and all for a good cause. Wyburn: We also spent a few days in Essex last month to celebrate our friend Katie's Birthday, a party like no other I've been to.

I'm very proud of the outcome and thankful to Beth Cook for producing and directing such an emotive film. Wayne: I watched a lot of the filming and was moved to tears a few times but I'm so proud of you and it's great to see the response it's had from people. Well done you. Wyburn: Thank You, and thanks to everyone involved!

Cardiffian Of The Month: Wayne: A full on festival more like not a birthday party. There were bands, inflatable castles, swimming pools, hog roast & people camping. Such a fun time, and we always enjoy our trips to Essex. Wyburn: And it was an incredible month doing The Wyburn and Wayne Show on Radio Cardiff. Some amazing guests. We dedicated a show to Hairspray The Musical and played 60's tunes which was great, and had a visit from our pal the great Dame Opal Fruits which brought chaos to the show.

Name: Shane Andrews Occupation: Railway Manager and volunteer for charities including Pride Cymru & Scouts Fave Bar in Cardiff: Mary's Fave restaurant in Cardiff: Madeira Restaurante Fave Cardiffian: Roald Dahl (wasn't the City of the Unexpected such a great tribute to the legend?!) Cardiff in 3 words: Vibrant Exciting Emerging

Wayne: The cast of Fred & Rose were great guests too and it was fab to speak to them before they took their show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Wyburn: Yes and their play was a huge success in Edinburgh, so pleased for those guys. Wayne: And speaking of Opal Fruits, we are guest presenting at Pride Cymru with her this year. Pride are bringing back The Big Weekend and it looks to be a fantastic 3 days of entertainment. We will have a full report in next months column. Wyburn: In the run up to pride I worked on a documentary about the bullying I experienced growing up. It was extremely hard to make but

“And Another Thing…….”

By Vince Nolan

mind your language I am a man of a certain age and consequently do not always take too kindly to trying to learn new tricks. However, I never cease to be amazed at how our beautiful language is morphing into meaningless drivel. Texting has something to do with this but I suspect it mainly stems from so called “Celebrity Status” being conferred on every single-celled piece of pond life who can tie their own shoe laces on reality TV without falling over. They are then seen to be the new icons and are copied by the populous so they too can be “on message” or more likely, “on telly.”

I used to be a mime artist but I can talk about it now! The picture below comes courtesy of She Who Must Be Obeyed taken from her Bumper Fun Joke Book, Volume III.

Moving on, I actually literally went down to St. Peter’s RFC to watch the Final Lions Test Match and was determined not to drink. Kick-off was 08.30. By 08.35 I finally cracked and had my first pint. The current Mrs Nolan arrived at 4pm to pick me up. Poor woman. I had apparently literally agreed to re-join the Committee so I reckon I was slipped a Mickey Finn. Anyway, having safely arrived back at Nolan Towers, She put a glass of wine in front of me. I remembered what to do with it but had no further capacity available to do it. After all, one cannot fill a bath that is already full. I literally went to bed at 6pm. That weekend weakened me.

By way of example, we seem to be a nation that currently delights in adding “literally” and/or “actually” to every sentence. Literally good morning or I actually went to the shops! This adds nothing to the sense of the sentence but is now trendy, oh please. The other saying that I really do not understand is when somebody says “see you later” when patently they won’t since one of you is leaving wherever you happen to be. Stop doing it. Back in the day, I am not loving it either. In other language related matters: The past, present and future walk into a bar. It was tense.

I recently read a critique of the latest Disney film, Cars 3. We are all no doubt familiar with the phrase “Killing the goose that lays the golden egg” or staying with animal genocide, “Killing the Cash

Don’t you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.

Talking of Aussie: What is the difference between an Australian wedding and an Australian funeral? One less drunk at the funeral mate. A devout Australian sheep farmer lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out in the bush. Three weeks later, a kangaroo hopped up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The farmer couldn't believe his eyes. He took the precious book out of the kangaroos mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, "It's a miracle!" "Not really," said the kangaroo. "Your name and address is written inside the cover." Cow.” This latter phrase was given a new twist by the journalist when he described the film as: “The box office bovine is desiccated by the conclusion of this third film.” Quite clever I thought.

Anyway, there we were having couple of tubes of amber nectar, whilst attempting to complete the Western Mail Cross/Quiz word. Acknowledging I am on thin ice here, I do not claim to be an expert on “women’s matters” but I was left with the distinct impression that She was in a high state of ovulation. Let me present the evidence: Suggested answer – Erotica. Real answer – Emotion. Suggested answer – Cock. Real answer – Fowl. Suggested answer – Groan. Real answer – Grown. She followed this up by phoning me in work the next day and said, "Come on over, there's nobody home." I went over. Nobody was home. I will literally never understand women.

In local news, The Western Mail reported the success of the recent Velothon Wales which actually offered a 140km challenge to bicycle riders. In an interesting twist they literally reported that the route involved a gruelling climb to a peak of 1,833 metres. The problem with this of course is that it equates to 5,499 feet or thereabouts. Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain is only 1,344 metres or a mere 4,000 feet so we may need a re-measure in parts of Wales.

Now the Leader of the Opposition and I were literally (I have succeeded in annoying myself now) down the local watering hole, The Kookaburra and Koala this arvo planning our Christmas trip to see Son and overdraft in Australia. We had been given some sound advice and tips by friends who had ventured Down Under (if you pardon the phrase). We may be staying in Paddington or Paddo as they call it. It seems that everything they say ends in O so we will be alright with alcho, buffalo, cheapo, disco, gazebo, kimono, psycho, saddo, volcano and zoo but trying to put them all into a meaningful Aussie sentence has defeated me.

In the interests of balanced reporting, a woman accompanied her husband to the doctor's surgery. After his check-up, the doctor called the wife into his office alone. He said: "Your husband is suffering from a very severe disease, combined with horrible stress." If you don't do the following, he will surely die. Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant and make sure he is in a good mood. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don't burden him with chores as he probably will have had a hard day. Don't discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. Most importantly, make love with him many times a week and satisfy his every whim. If you can do this for the next ten months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely." On the way home, the husband asked his wife, "What did the doctor say?" "You're going to die," she replied. See you later (no I won’t).

Gas Safety Week: Fighting For A Gas Safe Nation We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2017, taking place 18th – 24th September. Gas Safety Week is an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe. Check your gas appliances every year. Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tenants – make sure your landlord arranges this. Set a reminder so you don’t forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk. Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered. You can find and check an engineer at www.gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500. Check your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card. Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly e.g. lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. For a safety check or service on your gas appliances you can call Cardiff based, Gas Safe registered company Clear Choice Plumbing and Heating on 02920 483309.

Know the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Have an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.

For gas safety advice or to find and check an engineer visit the Gas Safe Register website at www.gassaferegister.co.uk

‘an evening with cambrensis’ By Michael James Taking it's name from,'Gilraldus Cambrensis', better know perhaps as, 'Gerald of Wales', the first Archbishop of Wales who travelled extensively throughout the country on horseback, taking the Gospel to all the townships and small communities in Wales.

Regular readers of this column will remember that I recently wrote a couple of articles about the work of, 'Cardiff Street Pastors', who are a group of people from various churches in Cardiff who form part of what is known as ,'The Nightime Economy'. Complementing the work of the police, ambulance services and the staff of the many bars and nightclubs, Street Pastors are on patrol from 10.00pm to 4.00am on Fridays and Saturdays, every weekend of the year helping wherever needed the many visitors and late night revellers in the City Centre. They are all volunteers and rely solely on donations to carry on this valuable work.

The 'Wikipedia' page on Google states that in his book, 'Descriptio Cambriae', written in the year, 1194, Gerald penned the following words that still gives so much pride to Welsh singers of today. 'In their musical concerts they do not sing in unison like the inhabitants of other countries but in many different parts......You will hear as many different parts and voices as there are performers who all at length unite with organic melody'.

To this end, the Christian choir 'CAMBRENSIS', is giving a concert at Albany Road Baptist Church next month, and it would be lovely if as many people as possible would come to support this worthy Charity. The Choir will be giving it's services free and all the proceeds/donations will go to support the work of Cardiff Street Pastors.

The modern day singers of Cambrensis would be disappointed if you could hear only,

From previous articles you will know all about the Street Pastors, but what or who are Cambrensis ?

'as many different voices as there are performers'

Under it's Musical Director, Jeffrey Howard, (who is also the MD of the Treorchy Male Choir), you will hear all the usual four choral parts coming together beautifully to,

out audiences at St. David's Hall with the ever popular 'Promise of Christmas' in December each year, the next being on 2nd December 2017. It is an excellent evening, with Cambrensis being joined by the 'Cambrats' and the St.David's Praise Choir, formed by some 200 voices from South Wales Churches and Chapels and featuring the Cambrensis Orchestra. It is regarded by many as the start of their Christmas.

'unite with organic melody'. Originally formed in 1982 as the 'South Wales Baptist Youth Choir', a mixture of male and female voices under the leadership of Mr. Kelvyn Thomas, it has long since dropped 'Youth' from it's name as many of the original choir members have now outgrown the right to that title, while still keeping their excellent vocal talents. Subsequently it's name was changed to 'Cambrensis' and now has expanded to include Junior Singers, ('The Cambrats'), an Orchestra, a Concert Band and a brass Quintet.

Listening to Cambrensis at any of their concerts is an enjoyable occasion and one not to be missed, but the main purpose of me bringing the upcoming concert to your attention is to publicise it's support for the work of the Cardiff Street Pastors. So please come and spend, 'An Evening with Cambrensis', in support of this very worthy cause. It is being held at Albany Road Baptist Church on Saturday, 7th October 2017, starting at 7.30pm. Entry is free of charge but there will be a retiring collection at the end. For more information please go to : elizmichjames@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 02920 753149.

Since it's formation, the Choir, whose aim is to perform major classical works and contemporary Christian songs, has toured extensively. It's travels have taken it to the USA (twice), France, Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Guernsey and to sing at European and World Baptist Gatherings.

For information and tickets to hear Cambrensis', 'The Promise of Christmas', please contact the box office at St. David's Hall.

As well as singing at numerous Charitable events throughout South Wales and at special occasions in local Churches and Chapels, it also performs to sell

adhd support within our city By Sarah-Jane Outten

Continuing her series of articles exploring small businesses and entrepreneurs in Cardiff, this month Sarah-Jane talks to a local support group, ADHD Cardiff, a charity which has been set up to support parents and carers of children diagnosed with ADHD, or are in the process of diagnosis.

As I write this month’s column I am mid school summer holiday chaos. Any fellow parent will relate to juggling work commitments and entertaining the family for 6 weeks. I have a 14-year-old and a 5-year-old at home, and finding activities that entertain both at the same time are borderline impossible.

When we do eventually decide on a location or venue, I then consider if I can tolerate the rest of Cardiff’s families also being there. I find busy places with lots of children running around particularly overwhelming and stressful. And then I imagine how much greater the task would be if my child had ADHD. Deciding how to tackle everyday events must be a minefield. Then when you do finally decide on a venue there is so much more to consider. Who will make allowances for your child? Their disability isn’t visibly obvious. Do you spend your day apologising to other parents for your child’s seemingly ‘bad behaviour’ which really isn’t naughty at all? Or do you exhaust yourself by explaining to every other parent that your child has ADHD? And even if you do, is that enough, as the general understanding of ADHD is poor and confusing.

These are just a few of the questions that the parents of ADHD children must ask every day and therefore a local support group is so important. ADHD Cardiff can provide that support. This small ‘unincorporated’ charity has been set up to support parents and carers of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD or are in the process of diagnosis. The trustees, Paul Sawyer, Sarah-Jane Bailey and Samantha Williams started the charity in January 2016 and haven’t looked back. As parents of children with ADHD they fully understand the need to support fellow parents and their children. They also work on raising awareness of ADHD as information is often confusing and complex. They collectively seek to campaign for better services for children seeking diagnosis and those diagnosed.

Diagnosis is often the hardest part for parents and talking to others who understand this is one of the most valuable assets that ADHD Cardiff can offer. There are regular events that are held by ADHD Cardiff that you can come along to with the children. They are informal and friendly meet ups, in social environments that are suitable for ADHD children. That way the kids get to have a good time and parents and carers can relax a little. Why not pop along to one of the following meet ups: Ants Inya Pants, Fortnightly, Thursdays, 6.00pm – 8.00pm. Rhydypennau Library, Last Friday of each month, 2.00pm – 3.00pm. Studies have also shown that team sports are beneficial to children with neurodevelopment condition and that they can benefit from following instructions in a quiet controlled environment. So, ADHD Cardiff have teamed up with Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club. Sessions include all equipment and it’s just £1.50 per child. They are every fortnight on Saturdays, 9.00am -10.00am (Ages 6 -9 years) & 10am – 11am (Ages 10 -16 years). ADHD Cardiff also have their own library of useful literature that can be borrowed via them too, a very helpful resource for parents and carers. This local community based group really is vital to many families in Cardiff. Paul, Sarah-Jane and Samantha all have day jobs too. So, if you think you can help in any way please get in touch, they would love to hear from you. info@adhdcardiff.co.uk www.adhdcardiff.co.uk You can also follow the group on Facebook for latest news, advice and events.

"There is nothing more lonely than waking in the early hours with your loved one in pain or fear and not knowing what to do the hospice gave me that safety net" Let's talk about death. The only true certainty in life, it will inevitably affect each and every one of us - the death of a friend, acquaintance, loved one or, ultimately, our own. And, although the specifics might vary, what everyone hopes for is the same: a 'good' death, with dignity, free of pain and suffering. Death never changes. Or, does it?

listening to what we needed and wanted, when medication wasn't provided promptly or suggesting alternative medication to ease side effects," said Lynne. "There is nothing more lonely than waking in the early hours with your loved one in pain or fear and not knowing what to do, and the hospice gave me that safety net. They also gave the emotional support we needed taught us how to talk sensitively about what was to come to our daughter, Cara, who was 10 at the time. But, most crucially, I know their door is always open, and that their help doesn't have an expiry date. That means a lot”.

Last year, City Hospice (formerly George Thomas Hospice Care) delivered palliative and end of life care to 737 patients and their families across Cardiff. But there are dark clouds on the horizon. While it is wonderful that we were able to support a record number of patients and families last year, meaning more people were able to have the care they needed at a most difficult time in their lives, it is also an indication of even greater numbers to come. The hospice expects to see the number of patients continuing to rise, and for a simple reason. We currently only see a small proportion of those patients in the population we serve who are diagnosed with non-cancer terminal conditions, but this number is increasing steadily as GPs and hospital doctors realise that these patients can also benefit from the services provided by the hospice. We expect this growth in the number of patients with a non-cancer diagnosis to continue, and possibly accelerate (for example, last year we cared for 25 patients diagnosed with dementia).

"It has been the most difficult few years and it will continue to be a long road without him in our lives, but we are looking forward and the hospice has played a key role in getting us to where we are today and where we will be in the future. This support should never be underestimated. I am in no doubt whatsoever that people need City Hospice - and that City Hospice needs your support to keep on doing what it does so well," she said.

We estimate that the likely need for palliative and end of life care across Cardiff could be as high as 1,200 – 1,400 patients each year, almost double the current number. That would mean a massive expansion of our clinical team - and of the money we would need to raise to pay for the extra staff. To raise that extra money, we appeal to the whole of the Cardiff community - both the general public and local businesses for your help. If we cannot appeal to the local community as ‘Cardiff’s local hospice’ we won’t succeed in raising the extra money we will need to meet tomorrow’s demands – staying at today’s levels means that very soon we might have to turn patients away – something we have never done and do not intend to do.

At City Hospice, we will continue to offer the highest possible standards of care and support to families like Lynne's for as long as they need it. But we need your help. To help us raise £10,000 to fund 500 hours of nursing care for families in Cardiff, please join our 10K for £10K Memorial Walk starting at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, from 10am on Sunday 8 October, and remember someone you have loved and lost.

For families like Lynne Schofield, whose husband Vernon died from cancer, and their daughters Maya and Cara, the absence of such support is unimaginable. "The team acted as our advocate when others simply weren't

Every step taken by you will mean families do not have to face climbing a mountain alone. For more details about how we care for patients and families, visit our website at www.cityhospice.org.uk or telephone 02920 524150.

food you can bank on! By Natalie McCulloch

FACT: 1 in 5 people live below the poverty line in the UK alone FACT: Poverty effects 1 IN 4 children, that’s 9 in every average classroom! FACT: There are many ways that you can make a positive difference to their lives today thanks to the Cardiff Foodbank!

In a century of extremes where terms such as ‘throw away culture’, ‘binge society’ and ‘nation of wasters’ have replaced the bygone concepts of ‘make do and mend’, ‘rationing’ and ‘buy it with thought, cook it with care, use what is left’; perhaps we need a stark reminder of the dire state we’re in and how we can work together to improve it.

Foodbanks have been operating for almost two decades to provide food parcels to people and families in need in the UK. This is thanks to a charity called ‘The Trussell Trust’ who piloted the schemes, teams of dedicated volunteers who are the fuel for them and supporters from all walks of life. Thanks to the 40,000 volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help foodbanks across over 400 sites across the UK, food poverty and hunger are on the decrease.

As a society, we are incredibly wasteful at times, you only have to look at statistics, the amount of refuse bins for weekly collections or the state of the city walkways, at times, which are carpeted with litter. Supermarket shopping, and other shopping, is ‘big business’ now thanks to credit cards, twenty-four hour shops and online resources, so the temptation to BUY BUY BUY is there in force!

In 2016/17 alone, The Trussell Trust’s Foodbank Network provided 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies and support to people in crisis in the UK, which is amazing for something which started as a project from one man’s shed! Feel inspired? Do you want to know how YOU can help?

A dear elderly resident of mine used to tell me that she was brought up with her mother telling her (in Welsh) ‘Wasting food is a sin, there are children in this world who have nothing’ – a wise lesson to consider, I think! So how can we waste less by helping more?

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways we can all help, regardless of our own limitations. Even those with limited finances, who are short of time or feel under confident in their skills, can make a HUGE difference to the lives of many!

One of the strategies, designed to make positive change to those less fortunate than us, and even those facing poverty, is via provision of basic goods, the main one being food. This is where the foodbank comes into play!

Below are a few suggestions: Put your ‘clear out’ missions or ‘diet’ ventures to beneficial use – cutting out certain treats and

need them out of the way of temptation? Donate your unwanted food items to a foodbank near you! In date, intact items are always gratefully received and could give you more space too!

funds, money is needed for paying rent on our warehouse, petrol and running costs for the vans in addition to salaries and office costs. Could you organise a coffee morning/quiz night/bake sale or something fun like a dance off or bake off and raise vital funds?

Buy one more item on your weekly shop – Why not donate the ‘free one’ from your buy one gets one free deals? Or purchase something extra to give to the foodbank? It could cost under 50p but make a difference to someone out there! The website has up-to-date ‘most needed items’ lists if you need some guidance.

Become a Web editor - Maybe your digital skills can help communicate the foodbank message to a local and global audience? Spread the word – tell people about why the foodbank is a brilliant idea, share the message and spread the enthusiasm!

Support a supermarket collection team – volunteers are required for about 2 hours, once or twice a year. Your role would be to stand (or sit) in supermarket entrances handing out shopping lists of ‘needed’ items, sorting and receiving food donations/money from shoppers. All you need is a friendly smile and the motivation to help!

Set up a collection in your workplace/ community – get in touch with the foodbank for a collection box and get your companions/ colleagues/flatmates involved. If any of these sound like something you can do – that’s great! Please get in touch: 02920 484 120 or info@cardiff.foodbank.org.uk or log onto https://cardiff.foodbank.org.uk

Work in the warehouse – Help is needed to weigh, sort and store donated food before it’s made into parcels for clients to collect. Be a collection chauffeur - collect and deliver food all over Cardiff regularly throughout the week. You could be the driver or their buddy! Transport provided!

Living, or existing in a state of poverty can encompass all kinds of problems with mental, physical and social health. Many people say they feel embarrassed, ashamed and helpless daily. A sure sign that something must change!

Become a voucher co-ordinating volunteer you will be coordinating the issuing and distribution of vouchers to various agencies.

Your help and support could make a life changing difference to someone in need and it could help you too. It is a well-recognised phenomenon that helping others promotes positive physiological changes in the brain associated with happiness.

Get ‘hands on’ at the centres - Meet clients and give out food parcels. Have an informal chat with clients, provide guidance and support (or just a lovely cuppa!). Tea and coffee provided!

So, go on – do something incredible today!

Raise some funds – As a charity that relies on donations from the public and grants from trust

cardiff celebrates the centenary of the russian revolution! Hurry down to Cardiff this autumn season as Wales marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution, capturing the social and cultural aspects of the era, with the help of Arts Organisations and venues across the country. With a wide selection of cultural events and varied performances, there is a little something for everyone to explore, and age isn’t a limit!

Further events include Mavron Quartet which is held on the 29th September at St John’s Church, Cardiff. The Quartet sit proudly in the classical music genre, reinforcing the pain and suffering felt at the time, exploring not only Russian Folklore pieces, but music of the future.

Being the first collaboration of its kind – the historical links between Wales and Russia are depicted in raw, artistic depth over the season. BBC National Orchestra of Wales, National Dance Company of Wales, Welsh National Opera, St David’s Hall and WMC are only a few of the organisations set to put on spectacular themed shows to mark the anniversary, with a fresh and exquisite taste.

80’s production The Cherry Orchard, performed at the Sherman Theatre from 13th- 28th October, will take us through a re-imagining of the Russian classic in a witty fashion. Diary of a Madman held at Chapter Arts Centre is another piece which may tickle your fancy, featuring dark humour and performed by award-winning actor, Robert Bowman. The WNO Orchestra, set to perform at St David’s Hall, will explore German romanticism in four moving scores composed by Gustav Mahler. An ambitious cultural celebration like no other, with lots of exciting events to explore. Join the revolution!

BAFTA award winning actor and R17 Patron, Michael Sheen expressed his support for the programme, alongside Valery Gergiev, artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, stating: “It is a time for reflection and the arts provide an ideal vehicle to explore this momentous historical event.”

Opening 23rd September, the events will unravel this autumn season, to commemorate the 100th anniversary. Popular picks, all based on true events, include Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (based on the Alexander Pushkin’s novel by the same name), and Janáček’s From the House of the Dead. All are sung in Russian, with English and Welsh subtitles, performed and brought to life by Welsh National Opera.

seizing success, in just half an hour a day! By Jamie L. Harding when I didn’t really write anything worth saving, I was still keeping the craft up, keeping the blade sharp.

What you’re about to read – what you currently are reading, is the first piece of proper writing I’ve done in a considerable amount of time.

And then, back in March of last year, my dog died. My best friend. His loss set me back, and other than some journal entries I didn’t write a single word for at least four or five months. It was an excuse – a justifiable one, this time, but still an excuse. The thing about wanting to succeed in the world as a writer is that you can’t allow yourself to stop working. You can’t give in to the excuses. Whether it’s a sore writing hand, a late night or the loss of your best buddy, you just have to keep working. That’s something which has taken me a while to realise.

I’ve been pretty busy lately, with two new jobs, moving home, finding a new vehicle – just general things which take up all your time and leave you too tired to care about doing anything productive, when you do finally get a day off. It’s understandable to want to relax, sure, but that doesn’t justify it – not to me, anyway.

I believe the key to success comes with two things: quality, and consistency. The thing you’re producing has to be good – whether through natural talent or hours of refinement and editing, or else nobody else will want to engage with it. This is common sense; nobody wants to read a bad book or watch a bad movie, after all. However, in order to really make something of yourself you also can’t expect to just create something ‘every now and then.’ This is where consistency comes in: whatever creative field it is you wish to succeed within, you have to be constantly producing, constantly working, and constantly honing your skills. The more work you produce, the higher the chance of success.

And it isn’t always easy, of course; it’s far easier to choose the sofa over the desk, to choose easy-going videogames or TV shows over the dauntingly blank stare of Microsoft Word. All of us do it – even in non-creative aspects of our lives, we procrastinate. I’ll clean the house tomorrow. I’ll sort those taxes tomorrow. I’ll reply to that message later. Putting things off is almost a human instinct. We want to conserve our energy, to relax. But for those of us who aim for successful lives in competitive fields, this just isn’t good enough. You have to put the work in. As Robert Hass once said, ‘You can do your life’s work in half an hour a day.’ Think about what you want in life, and make that effort to work towards it, whether it’s wanting to create content, pursue a particular hobby, or even just improve your health or connect more with people; just set the time aside and do it.

And I’ve been slacking lately. I used to write 500 words every single day. I had a wall chart, much like a calendar, where I would then document at the end of each day just how many words I had written. Sometimes it would be up in the thousands, and sometimes it would be a struggled five-hundred-and-one. Either way, I was prolific.

Although I realise that is rich, coming from a guy who has only written this – and not much else – in such a long time, but still, we all have to start somewhere, right?

I was compiling stacks of work, page upon page of proof that I was indeed a writer, that I could consistently create, even on the days where I really didn’t feel productive at all. This method worked, too. It forced me into doing well, because even on the days
