May brought so many highs, one of them being our children’s school sports day with their peers. They did manage to win a few races but at their age it’s more about having fun and trying their best and they certainly did that. Our son recently won clubman of the year at his rugby team`s end of season presentation which we were incredibly proud of, and he also celebrated his birthday last month at Infinity Trampoline Park. I thought trying to control 15 children would be hard work for the staff but I’m happy to report the children all had a great time with no tears or injuries!. It was so much fun, I highly recommend this venue for children’s parties. On another subject, our son wanted to give up learning the guitar. This is a tricky one as he’s come so far but we’d never force either of our children to do something they don’t want to do. Luckily, a local man who is incredibly talented, by the name of Tom Auton, has just released his 2nd single, ‘Money Man’, and also happens to be good friends with our columnists Wyburn and Wayne. Tom is an excellent guitarist, and was very generous in giving up his time to come to our house and give our son a few tips on playing the guitar. Subsequently, our son now wants Tom to be his tutor! Tom has written and composed all his own songs and he’s only just about to do his A levels. This boy will go far and we’re 100% behind him. Talking of our columnists Wyburn and Wayne, they were recently invited to Buckingham Palace for a Garden Party hosted by The Queen, in recognition of their charity work. They scrubbed up well too on the day. I was so pleased they were invited to attend because they do so much charity work throughout the year, so they thoroughly deserved it.

Summer at St David’s Hall SUMMER is here and there’s a suitably warm welcome awaiting you at St David’s Hall with plenty to keep you entertained throughout the sunny days and nights. The next two months mark the return of two classical extravaganzas at the National Concert Hall of Wales. Firstly, there’s the biennial BBC Cardiff Singer of the World (Sun 11 – Sun 18 June) with the very best opera voices globally vying for the prestigious prize. Then in July there’s the Welsh Proms (Sat 22 – Sat 29 July) featuring a week’s worth of captivating concerts encapsulating orchestral masterpieces, memorable movies themes, brass, organ recitals, folk and jazz before the most patriot date in our classical calendar – the Last Night of the Welsh Proms (Sat 29 July). Plus, there’s no better way to get tiny tots interested in rhythm and melody than with the Tiddly Prom (Sat 22 – Sat 29 July) as Bert’s Magical Musical Farmyard introduces under 5s to a host of interesting instruments and silly songs. Likewise, the Family Prom (Sun 23 July) is great fun for young and old as Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra perform The Dance-Off with special guest presenter, Connie Fisher. Get ready to experience an action-packed programme of popular pieces including West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hunger Games and Swan Lake. Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra also celebrate their 35th birthday in style with The Glory of Strauss & Elgar (Sat 15 July) accompanied by stunning soloists Steffan Morris and Jeffrey Howard. The breathtaking classical music doesn’t stop there either as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Fri 2 June) present The Music of Eric Whitacre conducted by the man himself, whilst the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (Thurs 8 June) perform Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Furthermore, there’s a powerful programme of Strauss and Sibelius from the Royal Welsh College Symphony Orchestra (Weds 28 June), and there’s the most promising young classical talent locally in the Gwent Music Summer Showcase (Mon 26 June). It’s not all about classical though. Folk fans are in for a treat as the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Musician of the Year, Rachel Newton (Tues 27 June) delivers an intimate set in the L3 Lounge as part of Roots Unearthed. There’s a healthy dose of nostalgia too with The Roy Orbison Story (Sat 24 June). And we may have lost a rock legend last year, but the Starman’s spirit lives on in The Bowie Experience (Fri 14 July). Yet, if you like your music even quirkier it’s well worth venturing into the weird and wonderful world of The Spooky Men’s Chorale (Weds 12 July). Strictly Come Dancing fans won’t want to miss Kevin & Karen (Weds 21 June), and if you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained in the school summer holidays then hilarious Aussie music group The Wiggles (Sun 6 Aug) is the ideal afternoon with your littles ones! BBC Cardiff Singer of The World is a classical music competition for opera and concert singers at the start of their careers, aged 18-32. It includes a 3-stage selection process, after which 20 singers are invited to perform in Cardiff in front of a distinguished jury. This year the competitors will be accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, accompanists Llyr Williams and Simon Lepper, principal conductor Thomas Sondergard and musical director Tomas Hanus. The competition has launched the careers of stars such as Karita Mattila, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Bryn Terfel, Anja Harteros and Jamia Barton. Eglwys Dewi Sant is arranging a Flower Festival in celebration of 60 years in St Andrew's Crescent, Cardiff. The theme for the festival is ‘In the Footsteps of the Celtic Saints’ in celebration of Wales’ rich heritage of Celtic Saints. The Festival will seek to reflect their lives in floral displays by church members, flower clubs, churches and chapels in and around Cardiff. The third Cardiff Triathlon organised by Always Aim High Events, will take place on the weekend of 24-25 June. Transition and the event village will be situated outside the Wales Millennium Centre. Parents are odd creatures. Yes, The Boss and I have probably done more than anyone else in the world to help our eleven year old daughter, The Girl, to make the most of her many gifts. Paradoxically, however, the only two people in the world who have shouted at The Girl are... The Boss and I. Her teachers probably haven't. And if her friends in the playground have shouted at her, and she at them, whilst playing games, that clearly doesn't count. So, welcome back friends and readers, from the big, overbearing bully who is probably the only man in the world to have shouted at The Girl, who happens to have Down Syndrome (DS).
best with a slipper (for lying, since you ask), and the Headmaster of the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for Boys in Carmarthen (a man 'affectionately' known by pupils as 'Barrel') gave most of his pupils, including me, three or four swishes of the cane on our upturned palms whenever we looked askance at him. Mind you, for all his discipline, he ran an undisciplined school - a maths teacher more than once threw a wooden chalk-board duster at, and connected with, the heads of pupils who took his displeasure. And the Latin teacher was locked inside his own classroom by his 'O'-level pupils. Maybe the correlation between the Headmaster dishing it out and the behaviour of the kids was in some way causative? Though establishing which direction causation flowed, from Head to kids, or vice versa, might need more space than this little column can provide.
I assume many (most?) families follow the same pattern? Occasionally, a parent or guardian will raise their voice or shout at the child. Perhaps, too, siblings will screech at each other? But neither teachers nor strangers nor even uncles and aunts, really have carte blanche to shout at our kids. So why do we sometimes accept, within families, types of behaviour that we would frown on if you, a stranger, shouted at my child? Or I at yours?
But, even though corporal punishment is nowadays a no-no, I have smacked The Girl on the back of her legs. That's the 'last resort' my mam would use to get something into my thick head or if I repeatedly put myself in danger. But she stopped doing this by the time I was six or seven. I guess she felt as I did when I did it to The Girl - like a big bully picking on someone a third of their size. And the look my daughter gave me was one I never want to see on her face again. Thus, chez nous, smacking was unilaterally disarmed by the smacker himself.
I mean, when it comes to physical chastisement, the rules are clear: no, don't do it. Neither corporal punishment in schools nor a "quick smack on the bottom" at home are acceptable these days. And I'm glad about this; my dad once gave me six of the

And of course, I'd shout back. There was a lot of love in our family, but there was shouting too! But need there be a shouty response to challenging behaviour? It struck me that I ought to ask my sisters. After all, to establish whether shouting is a learned behaviour or is hard-wired into our DNA, it would be good to compare approaches and outcomes with people who shared my environment and my genes. One sister has two kids, one in University and the other in her twenties who is settling into her career. She told me: "I can't imagine any child getting through their early years without their parents raising their voices! It shows that you care enough to worry. Ours appear quite happy on a diet of cuddles and raised voices!!!!" (My other sister slapped me upside my head and shouted at me to go boil my head. Joke.)
I ask because the older of our two Wire-Haired Hungarian Viszla bitches died three days ago, aged fourteen. Meggie died of natural causes: anaemia and major internal organ failure. The Boss drew the short straw and took Meggie to the out -of-hours vets to be put to sleep. She had to stay in the car park for some minutes after leaving Meg because she could not see through her tears. The Girl's first major comments came at bed time: "Mam, I really miss Meg's little doggie face", but the next morning she came downstairs, hugged the remaining dog, Wookie (aged four), and happily informed her that "we will get you a new puppy so you can have a new sister to play with".
So maybe, for my sisters and me, shouting is in the blood?! But is there a way of learning an alternative behaviour? The Boss offered me such an example only yesterday. Last night in the bathroom, Boss was taking Girl to bed, encouraging her to do the usual routines - toilet, bidet, wash, pyjamas, teeth, etc. The Girl pulled a strop, shouted repeatedly at her mother (who was asking her to clean her teeth) and then threw Purple Lucy [a very soft, very purple, toy bear] at her mum's head. The Boss caught Purple Lucy and said it would be put in the bin unless The Girl said sorry. The Girl shouted at her mam that "you've hurt my feelings", and proceeded to cry - big, boo-hoo, tears and sobs. Her mother told her that all she had to do was say 'sorry'. After a few more minutes of sobbing The Girl reluctantly signed "sorry". The Boss told her, "thank you but you need to say sorry." A while later and The Girl, sort-of audibly, said, "sorry mam" and her mam replied, "and I'm sorry for hurting your Feelings." So it can be done; even when a soft, purple toy is thrown at the parental head there is no need to shout.
In the months that follow look out for me and The Girl and two young dogs walking the parks and streets of Penylan. I'll be the cool, calm, and collected fellow, spreading contemplative happiness with every step, and joy with every smile. The dogs will trot by my side, alert and obedient. The Girl will be telling me how much she is looking forward to being teenager and that the couple of years between now and then cannot pass quickly enough. Alternatively, you'll see a frazzled figure, desperately trying to bribe his daughter with liver treats and his dogs with chocolate and ice-cream. But you can rest assured about one thing: there'll be no shouting. None. Not ever. Never.
As for kids so with dogs? This isn't as strange a question as it might seem. Dogs, like kids respond best to love, encouragement, bribery, and firm consistency. Much as I bribed The Girl this evening with some chocolate, so with the dogs. Similarly, attending to what The Girl is interested in and supporting her with enthusiasm is much the same as the reaction I give the dogs when they complete a task to my, and their, mutual satisfaction.

To raise awareness of the charity, and this event, knitters of ‘Volunteering Matters’ charity have been busy making heart shaped scented sachets to give away to people all around the UK. Each heart is individual but important, like the individual’s hearts receiving and creating them! Attached to each heart is a link to the website and an encouraging message to get involved, or at least find out more about, these little-known conditions. Originally, I had hoped to sell them to raise the vital funds which help keep the charity going, however after much thought I changed my mind. I feel we, as a society, are constantly bombarded with pleas for money off various charities and organisations, which may put people off picking one up. However – who doesn’t love a freebie ?? They say the best things in life are free, what better a freebie to receive than an incentive to improve our health and the health of those around us3? The initiative aims to raise awareness and make people feel better too. Hopefully it will prove Successful and even if it saves just one life, it’s worth it. I’ll be in Barry Library with a display surrounding World Heart Rhythm Week from the 1st until 10th June. Hopefully you can pop in and I’ll see you there. Remember, your heart counts!

Unmasking Skincare: What Women Want to Know More than a quarter of women are seeking greater transparency in what they put ‘on’ their skin, finds new research
Every stage of a woman’s life calls for a different skin care routine. During pregnancy and menopause, women often re-evaluate the products they use in response to their hormonal and skin changes. Although troublesome skin is most commonly associated with teenage years, recent data from Google has shown that amongst women over 25, the number one search term is “acne”. When it comes to pregnancy, while most women are aware of what they need to put in their body, many may not consider that what they put on their body can also affect their baby. It is increasingly important to uncover what is in our beauty products as we go through the different stages of our lives – new research by Garnier has now revealed that nearly half of women admit to becoming increasingly conscious of how ‘natural’ their lifestyle and the products are in the last five years. But just how easy is it to investigate how ‘natural’ we are – and are we able to decode the ingredients that go into the skincare products we use every day? Despite nearly a quarter of women admitting to reading the back of food packaging to check on additives, only one in seven scan the back of beauty products they potentially use every day, shows the research. Yet over a quarter of women wish beauty packaging was more transparent and easy to understand. So where does the decoding process start, and what is it that we actually want to know more about? Research shows that consumers want to know how and where the ingredients in their products are sourced, and whether those sources are sustainable and ethical. In response to this growing culture of curiosity, Garnier is taking the essential steps to outline more clearly on its packaging where the ingredients come from. “We’ve taken steps to help clarify by decoding the ingredients on the back of the pack and really explaining where our ingredients come from and how they are sourced,” said Karen Flavard-Jones, General Manager of Garnier UK & I. Welsh Hearts demonstrated to Shaky and his band how to perform CPR and it was incredible just being in the same company as the guy I used to watch on Top Of The Pops.'
Wyburn: And the rain held off which was great. Such a fun day too, great community spirit and amazing performances from The Rock Choir & local singing sensation Morgan Westcott. Wayne: In fairness, whatever event Welsh Hearts put on is always really good fun. We also went to the theatre quite a bit last month, absolutely loved Priscilla Queen Of The Desert at The Princess Royal Theatre.

Wyburn: That show is one of my favourites but this time it was even more special because my good friend Joe Crabbe played one of the main characters, Felicia in the show. He was so good, as was the rest of the cast.
Wayne: Some nights we had two maybe three events in one night last month and were rushing across town trying to fit them all in. Wyburn: Yes, the opening of Gareth Bales new bar Bar Eleven (which we loved), an event to celebrate Brains ales and then a dash to the bay for Romeo & Juliet all in one night was a bit mad to say the least.
Wayne: And how coincidental was it that Priscilla was directed by actor Michael Sheens’ dad and then just a few days later we get a call for you to present artwork to Michael Sheen! Wyburn: I know, mad! I had been making coffee art work all week at Kiln & Ilk in Pontcanna! The aim was to create as much coffee art as possible in one week and sell them off to raise funds for Welsh mental health charity Gofal! The Friday night raised just over £3,000 and the money is still coming! So honoured that Michael Sheen, Derek Brockway and Shakin Stevens all joined in with signing their portraits, and we had a great
Wayne: Yes, but so glad we did it all, how nice was Gareth Bales dad? And Romeo & Juliet by Omnidaze theatre was just incredible. Not a huge fan of Shakespeare but these guys made it fresh and exciting.

Wyburn: I love it and it's great having guests on too. Loved that we could give the Save Womanby Street campaign a shout out, and we had West End superstar Peter Karrie on our show too.
Wayne: Oh I had such a good time at Joseph. It's so different from the usual Lloyd Webber shows, it's a little silly and more pantomime but so much fun. Wyburn: It was lovely to meet up with the cast after the show too and see my old friend Lewis Asquith who played one of Josephs brothers.
Wayne: Before we introduce our Cardiffian Of The Month can I just say how lovely it's been having Beth Cook working for us the last few months. She's been a great help and we are happy to name her our Cardiffian Of The Month during the month of her birthday, so if anyone sees this pretty lady out and about, buy her a drink, she's awesome!
Wayne: The Wales Millennium Centre is still pulling in the big shows. Between there and the New Theatre there's no need to go to the west end. Wyburn: It was such a laugh hosting The Ultimate TV Game show at Kokos for a group of students at Cardiff Uni too. Our good pal Opal Fruits helped host and it was great to see so much money being raised for Ty Hafen.

Wyburn: For me one of the scariest experiences of my life happened last month. Spending the night at the Skirrid Inn in Abergavenny was just so frightening, it was part of a Haunted Happenings tour and the Skirrid is reportedly the oldest and most haunted pub in the UK.
Favourite bar in Cardiff: I love The Kings and Clwb Ifor Bach Cardiff in three words: Home sweet home! Favourite Cardiffian: Definitely Jolene Dover. She's by far one of Cardiff's gems!
Wayne: Yes, some freaky things happened that night. The people that came through on the ouija board and tables moving, it was too much. Even though it leaves you beyond scared you’re still intrigued for more. Wyburn: Will definitely do a similar tour again. Wayne: Speaking of tours, loved our trip to Edinburgh last month. Wyburn: And how easy and efficient to get there from Cardiff Airport with Flybe, no hassle and super quick. Wayne: I fell in love with Edinburgh. Such a beautiful city, and friendly people too. And haggis! Loved haggis. Wyburn: Yes it's great that my work takes me to other cities, and once my project was complete I had the best time exploring Edinburgh. Can't wait to go back, forty minutes in the air it's quicker than going to Swansea. Wayne: And our radio show is going good, The Wyburn and Wayne Show on Radio Cardiff, who would have thought us with a radio show haha.

“And Another Thing…….”

green book, orange faces, irish tricolour Morgans, later Lords Tredegar. We did the Grand Tour of this Grade 1 listed building recently only to hear one of our fellow visitors say to his wife “Nice ‘ouse innit.” I despair.
I have just read a book which charted the history of the Light Entertainment Industry of this Septic Isle from pre-war to today. A rattling good read it was, not, but still Quite Interesting (see what I did there). In 1949 the BBC issued its Programmes Policy Guide for writers and producers which was commonly known as The Green Book. This banned jokes about lavatories, effeminacy in men and all forms of immorality. Suggestive references to honeymoon couples, chambermaids, fig leaves, prostitution, lingerie, lodgers, commercial travellers and the word “basket” were also banned. Unfortunately, this pretty much covers all of my material. Luckily times have changed. So this chambermaid bursts in on two commercial travellers111.
I recently quit my job as a butler at a stately home. I didn't like being ordered around in that manor. Visited our local hostelry recently, The Triple Bypass (since it lies between the A48, M4 and new proposed M4 route). The Leader of the Opposition came along in case of trouble. The bar person/lady/maid asked who was next. I volunteered. A lady then turned around and said that she and her three friends were next. I apologised as profusely and insincerely as possible and said, “I would never deliberately push in ahead of ladies.” I could see they were taken in by my faux-politeness and were clearly not disciples of sarcasm. I went on to say that it was however accepted custom and practice, when queuing at a bar, to be facing the said facility to enable the catching of the servers’ eye and normally to do so with empty glass in hand or indeed empty hands. They must have been using some new kind of Ninja awareness technique since all had full glasses of direst coca cola, were not looking at the bar, whilst enthusiastically discussing something called the Kardashians, whatever that is. Sounded to me like some kind of infection – you know, “Have you still got the Kardashians?” “No, the ointment’s cleared it up.”

Known to me as Three Degrees because he has three degrees and I am therefore immensely proud of him. People talk about a thin line between genius and the alternative and let’s just say he has perfect balance. He sent me a text the other day which said: “I am thinking of applying for Irish Citizenship, please help.” As Sons of Roath I wondered how this could be? However, it transpires that if you have Irish Grandparents, you’re in. Alas it seems we have Irish Great Grandparents on both sides of the family. My Brothers’ logic was simple when explained. He has a French missus and she and their two children hold both UK and French citizenship. Post-Brexit his family can go anywhere in the EU and live and work without let or hindrance. However, my brother may not be so lucky, which is ironic really when people talk about the luck of the Irish. However, my youngest brother Patrick may be all right though.
large pizzas were ordered but they were promptly informed that the pub had alas sold out. My how I smiled as I went back to She grasping my low calorie real ale. Enchanting. I was recently in another pub with time to kill whilst She Who Must be Obeyed was at her knife-throwing class. At one stage I was the youngest there. It was reminiscent of a scene from the film Cocoon. Husband and wife came in. Dialogue between them went like this: “We haven’t booked a table.” “We haven’t? How many of us?” “Just the two.” “Who’s that then?” “Me and you.” “Really?” Bless them. This was then followed by a Bamber Gascoigne look-alike with mad professorial hair who was faced with 5 real ale pumps and an anxiety attack. He requested and was given a sample of each ale in a small glass which he sniffed and swilled about on his palate like some vintage wine. I tried a pint of each. Seemed like a better plan. Next into the pub came Billy Businessman and his Glamorous Wife and asked for his “usual table” which from where I was sat appeared to have a good view of the Gents Lav. I wish I had been sat at his usual table because I wouldn’t have moved. His wife then proceeded to show people her feature in Cardiff Life Magazine darling, little knowing she was going to do the double with the Cardiff Times Magazine. The crème-de-la-crème of society then settled down to pie and chips twice. I went back to my pork
Finally, the current Mrs Nolan has sold me another joke: “I got stung by a bee on the weekend – he charged me £6 for a jar of honey!” Au Revoir my fellow Brexiteers.

How many of you have walked down Queen Street and seen the homeless people who are sleeping at the entrance of a shop? How many of you have smiled at the homeless, and how many of you have totally ignored them? Before judging or ignoring the homeless, stop and think, try and put yourself in somebody else’s shoes for five minutes, and then hopefully the next time you walk past you will say ‘hello’ instead of ignoring them like they are invisible. Most of all, remind yourself that while you have labelled this group as homeless, they are still HUMANS.
over a 25 month period between 2013-14 and 2015-16. In the last three months of 2016 alone, a minimum of 368 people were found to be sleeping rough in the city. Homeless people are some of the most vulnerable members of society – 28% of homeless adults are severely mentally ill, 22% are physically disabled, 15% have suffered domestic violence and 3% are HIV positive. But instead of recognising them as victims who deserve our support and compassion, a growing number of cities are treating them as criminals who need to be punished. Society needs to change their attitude towards the homeless.
If you came home from work one day and found that your house was gone, like it was sucked into a portal, where would you go? If you say you'd stay with family, what if you had just moved to a new area, away from everyone? If you say you'd crash at a friend's house, what if the only people you knew had no extra space. If your answer is you'd go to a hotel, that might be fine for a night, but remember that the rates are 10 times what you were paying in rent. Many times people rush to judge but never really sit down and think what they would do if they were in this situation.
Homeless people are often stereotyped as violent drug users. To say that this is true of all homeless people is definitely inaccurate. The last recession showed us all that an abrupt economic change can affect all of us and cause a major change in our daily lives. In terms of society’s reaction to homeless people, the media has always created illusions to paint the picture they want society to see. The illusion here is that if we ignore the homeless, we eventually won’t see them. We don’t want to face the realisation that we live in a society with gaps in wealth and the quality of life. However, this leads to a morally bankrupt way of treating others. Even to be turned off by the way the homeless go about their lives is wrong.
Why are people homeless: Many reasons can lead people to living on the streets, some of these reasons are: • Poverty • Drug and Alcohol abuse • Gambling • Unemployment • Domestic violence • Poor mental health
Society has become a place where our place in it depends on many factors and then those factors depend on our expectations we must fulfill to gain a ‘’position’’ in society.

The 21st Century, with all its technological power, is the chance to show humans to change the way they see and treat those less fortunate in society, and learn to empathise and accept.

wonderland, books and cacti By Sarah-Jane Outten
Continuing her series of articles exploring small businesses and entrepreneurs in Cardiff, this month Sarah-Jane takes some time out and visits Dyffryn Gardens on the outskirts of Cardiff, and explores what this fascinating and diverse attraction has to offer. This month we took a day to chill out, and with some decent weather on our side it was time for a day out. We are blessed with so many fantastic places to visit in and around Cardiff to choose from. After a hectic few months of work, study and family commitments, we took ourselves out of the city centre. 7 miles from Cardiff is the beautiful Dyffryn Gardens.
We regard ourselves as regulars here, it is our ‘go to’ place when we need to unwind. With the children in school for the day and a rare day off there was no question that a day at Dyffryn was on the cards. On making your way in to the 55 acres of Edwardian gardens, you are greeted by the Victorian mansion house. This wonderful old lady has been partially restored, and was formally owned by the Cory’s, a wealthy family due to the industrial revolution. They traded successfully in coal and used this home as a retreat from business in the city. It is easy to see why they chose such a tranquil and secluded spot. Some of the rooms have been restored and furnished for the public to enjoy. The boutique room houses a stunning
decorative white fireplace. The red library is now a secondhand bookshop. With lots of comfortable seating it’s a great place to relax or escape a rain shower. I’m a bookworm so I took full advantage of browsing and buying. The blue room is the music room complete with an 1830’s piano. There is also a fantastic billiards room to enjoy. The additional 16th century fireplaces and the specially commissioned stained glass window are also features that you won’t want to miss. After we spent some time in the house we headed out on the terrace for a cup of tea. We sat and enjoyed the sweet aroma of wisteria that winds its lavender flowers around the pillars of the terrace itself. It appears this Victorian old lady decided to adorn herself with her very own flower crown. We

which were a great insight into how the gardens were maintained in the past and still are now. They are hidden away, so keep an eye out for those.
Refreshed, we headed off into the garden rooms. Maybe it’s because I’m a hardcore Alice in Wonderland fan, but I can always imagine the white rabbit passing by here. The gardens feel like a magical hidden world, and were designed by Thomas Mawson in 1906 and along with the influence of Reginald Cory they are wonderfully unique. Reginald was a keen horticulturalist who sourced plants from all over the world and made Dyffryn Gardens his home. It is because of his work that Dyffryn is now a place with great horticultural importance.
I can’t possibly begin to imagine how many species of plants are at Dyffryn. I’m not a gardening expert, but you don’t need to be, you can simply enjoy Dyffryn for the unique and beautiful place that it is. The National Trust are doing a wonderful job in maintaining the house and gardens, and by visiting you help to keep this part of our history alive and well. As well as the garden rooms, there is a croquet lawn, arboretum, glass house, statues, ponds and fountains. The glass house is a favourite of mine, it houses a magnificent display of Cacti. I’ve never seen such a varied collection, with some taller than myself. We made a new discovery during our most recent visit - the old potting and seeding rooms,

open university celebrates adult learners’ week in cardiff
“OU students are incredible people who often study alongside other demands on their time, but they can and do succeed and we see that each year at our graduation ceremonies. All you need is commitment and the desire to find out what you are capable of so come and see us during Adult Learners week and find out more about our life-changing learning opportunities.”
The Open University in Wales will be holding open events across Wales to celebrate Adult Leaners’ week a celebration of lifelong learning and those who have changed their lives through adult education. Adult Leaners’ week runs from 19 – 25 June and during the week The Open University will be out and about across Wales, including here in Cardiff. On Thursday 22 June you can drop in to the OU in Wales offices at 18 Custom House Street, Cardiff at any time between 12pm and 6pm. Events are also taking place in Newport, Swansea, Llandrindod Wells and Wrexham across the week.
One such inspirational student is Paul Mahoney (pictured above). Paul started his working life as a bricklayer and then moved on to work in a chrome plating factory. Nobody in his family had been to university, he says “When I came out of school the only people who did a degree were the children of teachers, it was for super intelligent people not like me, I was working class.”
The Open University will have course tutors and student support teams on hand to chat about courses, qualifications, fees and financial support options. The OU is the largest provider of part-time undergraduate higher education in Wales and currently has over 7,000 students across the country. To celebrate Adult Learners’ Week these drop-in sessions will be taking place across Wales to encourage adults to think about learning something new or taking on a new challenge.
But when Paul’s manager suggested he might like to try the OU he took his first steps with entry level maths and chemistry and then began a degree in IT. The benefits were soon obvious explains Paul. “I soon found that after studying I went into work and was using what I had learned that weekend which was useful to me and to my employer. And then there was the promotion. By then I had my first OU degree and that definitely enabled me to get the job.”
Tracey Marenghi, Marketing Manager at The Open University in Wales, explained the importance of the OU’s part-time learning opportunities:
Paul still lives on the same estate where he grew up but his career path has changed radically as have his aspirations. He says that OU study has made a huge difference to his life: “I left school with limited options and low confidence and now, because of the opportunity the OU gave me, I am someone who believes you can achieve anything – I might even go for a PhD. And that is good for me as an individual and for the community.”
“The OU in Wales is proud to be involved with Adult Learners’ Week once again this year. The Open University offers a route into higher education for all adults with a desire to learn. Our open access policy means that traditional entry qualifications are not a requirement for the majority of our courses. ‘rhodri’ By Michael James
The editors have graciously allowed me to share these memories as my tribute to a man I knew as a work colleague and friend. A man of whom a lot has been recently written since his sad and untimely death. A man variously described as, 'The Father of the Welsh Assembly', 'A Man of the People', a 'One Off'', an all round ,'Good Bloke' and universally known simply as, Rhodri!
these meetings he was always the same, quiet at first, intently listening to their hopes and requirements and then asking sharply enquiring questions to clarify or expand the points they were making to support their claims for a site. I can recall countless times at such meetings the way in which the company directors almost regarded with suspicion this non stereo typed council officer. That is, until he addressed them, then the change in their attitude became dramatic. As usual, Rhodri had done his homework and without referring to any notes, accurately showed them what he knew about their business and their standing in their own particular sector of work. He knew how many they employed, who their customers and competitors were and even how the market forces might effect them. I was always pleased when it got to this stage. Their body language changed sharply and their respect and admiration of him was obvious for all to see, and it also helped my own input to the meeting as everything seemed to go smoother!
I first met Rhodri Morgan when he worked in the old Cardiff City Planning Department, where he was, in political and governmental terms, simply, 'a man without portfolio'. Someone who worked in the planning office without a planning degree or background. Someone who was there as, a runner, a researcher, a collator and some times as an advisor. His lack of planning knowledge didn't bother him nor those he worked with. His intellect and capacity to 'gen-up' on any subject, enabled him to be a valued member of any group he worked with and especially his ability to, 'think outside the box'. On being introduced to him for the first time in the early 1970's, I was immediately stuck by his open friendliness, almost quirky personality and, later, with his special knack of quickly assessing the needs and requirements of all the different professional disciplines represented at those meetings and the many other meetings I was to attend with him. With his unruly shock of (then) dark hair and his casual clothing he was the almost the exact opposite of what one might expect of the usual staid, proper local government officer of the time. Different in so, so, many different ways, I always found him a delight to be with.
Working with Rhodri was never dull. I remember on one occasion, meeting a large local company and, with everything going smoothly, I suddenly noticed that he was wearing only one sock. I don't know if others saw this but I could barely contain my composure. Afterwards, when I mentioned it to him, his reply was, “Oh yeah. I had been out running at lunchtime and after showering, I couldn't find it but too late to worry looking for it, I had to be here on time!” This reminds me of one of his famous quotes when he was to officially welcome the Queen. When later challenged by reporters he reputedly replied, “No, I wasn't late. Her Majesty was early!”
Then, for a short time he became Cardiff Council's, Economic Development Officer, a job he continued with the newly formed (1974), South Glamorgan County Council. It was at this time that I found myself working very closely with Rhodri. We were part of a very small team promoting the industrial development of both the City and County Councils, dealing with all kinds and all sizes of local, national and international companies wishing to develop sites, first at Leckwith, then Pentwyn and eventually Wentloog. Usually, we would meet companies wishing to expand their local business, or major companies wishing to locate to Cardiff, and their size or importance never seemed to matter to Rhodri, he gave everyone the same attention. At
Rhodri enjoyed all sports, especially rugby as a fervent supporter of Cardiff RFC and Wales. I think that, if not actually playing for his local club, Dinas Powys, he regularly trained with them which of course kept him fit for his running. Much has been said about his interest in sport but nowhere have I seen anything mentioned about him running the London Marathon and completing in a good time. His knowledge about all sport was phenomenal and this, together with his naturally friendly manner made him popular with all those he met, especially while enjoying a pint, or two. He was equally at

home with the proverbial, 'man in the street', or those in high office, which made him perfect company anywhere.
“They are our early on-site contractors preparing the ground for the start of infrastructure works!” Only Rhodri could get away with something like that!
He was always great to be with and I enjoyed his company, especially on those occasions when we were working away in, say, London or Birmingham, representing the Council on promotional events. These were times when I was able to witness the different sides of Rhodri. On the one hand, the casually dressed, affable young man with his contagious humour and endless anecdotes, and on the other hand, the extremely intelligent, knowledgeable person who seemed to converse easily with those who visited our stand to discuss what Cardiff had to offer. Welsh was his first language and it was a pleasure to see the delight of many an 'ex-pat', who found that he was more than able to hold a conversation with them, 'Yn Gymraeg'. I never actually found out how many languages he could speak, but I often heard him speaking in French or German to visitors to our stand, and it would not have surprised me to learn that he had a smattering of Russian and Japanese as well.
My final recollections of him before he left to become head of the European Community for Wales, was during the Public Enquiry into the possible purchase and subsequent development of the farmland at Wentloog. It had been a long drawn out affair before the Enquiry Inspector was required to made his decision. The various South Wales Valley Authorities had instructed a leading London QC, to take their case against us and Rhodri was being closely questioned by him but the Q.C. was getting nowhere. At the end of a week of questioning and being rebuffed, this legal expert said, “Congratulations Mr. Morgan on your skill at avoiding nearly all my questions, I won't see you again. Next week I am in the Old Bailey prosecuting some rather nasty villains and I think that I will have a much easier time there. Well done!” This was said without sarcasm but with total respect. Sadly, just like that barrister, we too, will not see Rhodri again but, we can also say, with our total thanks, for what he has done for this Nation of ours, “Well done!”. Wales has indeed lost one of it's greatest champions but the biggest loss of all will be felt by his wife, Julie, his children and grandchildren and all his family and close friends. I pray that they will feel the warmth of our Nation towards the man I was proud to call a friend.
Talking about the Japanese, reminds me of yet another one of his quick one-liners. We were attempting to attract Nissan to bring their car making plant to Cardiff. At that time it seemed that there was no open piece of land within the City boundaries that were free of unofficial gypsy encampments. We were on site at Pentwyn when one of the Japanese group spotted, in the far distance, a large number of gypsy caravans and asked what they were doing there. Before anyone else could answer, Rhodri said,

sunny dhillon: chasing the dream Sunny Dhillon is a local lad from Cardiff who has written, directed and produced his debut short film called 'Dreamers', about mental health and depression, especially for those who are chasing their dreams. Sunny Dhillon is a young, up and coming Welsh actor, born and raised in Cardiff. He has learnt the craft of acting by studying in Cardiff, London and Los Angeles. He first started his training in Cardiff at the Actors Workshop. To further develop himself he then left his job and moved to London to study at Transatlantic Films (Acting for Camera). He is currently still residing in Cardiff whilst travelling back and forth to LA to further progress the craft. He is currently training at one of the top acting studios in Los Angeles, Margie Haber Studios, whose previous clients include the likes of Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Kyle chandler and Heather Locklear just to name a few. He is currently represented by Talent Hunters Agency in Los Angeles, which is run by Deborah Graci. He wishes to one day soon move to LA so that he can really break into the acting market as he truly believes there is a gap there for someone like him. Sunny Dhillon, who is also the lead in the short film, said, "This is a project dedicated to those who are chasing their dreams and feel like they are getting nowhere and have lost everything along the way. It also links to the subject of male depression and how it should be okay to be emotionally vulnerable, regardless of the gender." He is hoping that the project will be spread around the world, and will hopefully help someone during their own dark times. He believes that issues such as mental health should not be taken lightly, and no one should ever feel alone. This project is close to his heart because the story is about a struggling actor battling his demons and trying to keep his faith. When asked about how he managed to keep his faith, he said, "I had a dream once that I saw my dad and I gave him
an Oscar. To me that Oscar was a metaphor for me chasing my dreams and making it. That dream helps me fight through the darkest of times. When the day comes that I meet him again, I want that dream to be real." For this movie, he worked alongside Cinemerse UK, who are a small team of awardwinning, professional filmmakers based in South Wales. They work across the UK and overseas, and have recently just finished filming in Las Vegas for Escape Reality's global launch. The film also starred Ross Leyshon who is an up and coming Welsh actor from Swansea. He has appeared in theatre productions and films across Wales, and is a bright, young talent to look out for.
So what's next for Sunny Dhillon? He has just filmed his second short film, called 'Only God Knows', where he has combined his passion for boxing and God together. This is a much larger production with a far greater budget. It is currently going through the editing process and will be premiered during the summer. His next step is to head out to Los Angeles in September to meet his Agent and start the process of his Visa application and eventually moving out to America. The combination of the beast appetisers and the berry sloe gin laced champagne cocktails awakens a wild animal within Pixie who practically growls with hungry desire as we continue our South African adventure in the dining room. We take our seats around the beautifully dressed table adorned with a candelabra beneath an extravagant glittering chandelier.
Pixie Perez and Donna Marie (the Lady Gaga tribute act) have been best of friends for over 20 years. Between us we have travelled the globe experiencing local cuisines from China to Barhaim, Las Vegas to Capri and Honolulu to Bangor.
Donna Marie begins to wish she had bought a leash for Pixie, the untamed carnivorous bird, whose hungry eyes prowl the guests. Pixie, ever the opportunist, is on the hunt for meat and her instinctive mind is set on one unsuspecting guest. Lowered on her haunches she stealthily tip toes in leopard print stilettos, curling her impeccably lipsticked lip to reveal her sharp teeth and eager tongue (or should that be eager teeth and sharp tongue?). In particular Pixie has her hungry feline eyes locked longingly on her innocent victim as she prepares to sink her killer false nailed claws into a former Mr Gay Wales finalist. While everyone devours the starter of homemade mushroom ravioli with spaghetti’d butternut squash finished with a mushroom sauce, Pixie’s basic instinct is to make chase after a petrified Ben who looks like a wide-eyed deer being chased in a hunt.
We have built our friendship on our mutual love of music, socialising, travel and food - most importantly crumpets! We cannot wait to share our favourite recipes, experiences and tips on all things foody with you - our lovely readers. So prepare yourself to feast your eyes on our fabulous food filled gastronomic guide and let us leave you licking your lips as you join us stuffing our mouths! This month Pixie Perez and Donna Marie Gaga go on safari as our hosts take us on an appetising journey to the sweeping savannah’s of South Africa and the culinary delights that this wild wilderness has to offer. Like creatures of the night we stay up late drinking cocktails, laughing like a pack of hyenas and all gather around the piano for a good old singsong. Sadly, however, our South African adventure must come to an end as the sun sets on our time together and we get a taxi out of Africa. We would like to thank our very gorgeous and mighty king hosts Ewald and Gareth for their kind and generous hospitality, and to all of the other beautiful creatures (particularly Ben!) for making it such a wonderful experience.
Like feasting lions after a successful hunt we all sink our teeth into the delicious entree of South African kudu fillet accompanied with a sweet potato stack, mushrooms, beetroot and parsnip presented three ways; baked, fried, and jellied. All served with a double blend red wine jus and a brandy peppercorn sauce that we wash down with red wine from the Stellenbosch Estate. Delicious! For those who are not familiar with kudu they are a species of woodland antelope found throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. Kudu meat is similar to venison (deer) with a slightly gamey, liver-like flavour. It is very lean and therefore a very healthy option but must be cooked carefully to avoid it drying out in order to maintain it’s succulence.
It may be worth pointing out that Ewald and Gareth both bravely broke perhaps the most important rule of South African safari, when it comes to man hungry predators like Pixie - do not feed the wild animals! With her meat hunger satisfied Pixie’s former predatory behaviour mellows to a more acceptable mild flirtation as the trio of desserts is served. Now it’s Donna Marie’s turn to salivate uncontrollably, her pupils dilate and she enthusiastically licks her lips as the boys present South African Koeksisters, peppermint caramel biscuit cake and creme brûlée. Independent Book Shop Week 24 June—1 July
The end of this month will introduce one of the most exciting times of the year for anyone who loves to curl up with a good book—the Independent Book Shop Week (IBW). The initiative is part of the Books Are My Bag campaign, and seeks to promote small locally-owned bookshops across the UK and Ireland. We can look forward to numerous reading groups, author signings and celebrations, as well as the IBW Book Award! 34 titles have been shortlisted for the award, among which are: ‘A Poem for Every Night of the Year’ by Allie Esiri, ‘The Essex Serpent’ by Sarah Perry, ‘The Darkest Dark’ by Chris Hadfield, ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Bear Spotting’ by Michelle Robinson, and ‘When Breath Becomes Air’ by Paul Kalanithi. To celebrate Independent Book Shop Week, we suggest visiting two of our favourite local independent bookshops – the Wellfield Bookshop, which has been providing us with wonderful reading material for the past 35 years, and the much newer Octavo’s, where you can sit in and enjoy a cup of coffee with your book.
Wellfield Bookshop The Wellfield Bookshop, established in 1982, is a family-run independent book shop, one of the very few remaining in Cardiff. Situated in the heart of Roath, the charming bookshop certainly captures the now nostalgic feeling of browsing through shelves filled with exciting stories and adventures. Along with the works of some local authors, Wellfield offers many current best-selling titles, such as ‘The Girls’ by Emily Cline and ‘The Essex Serpent’ by Sarah Perry, and even have discounts on some new titles. Our recommendation is to stop by and pick up a copy of the fantastic ‘Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls’, featuring 100 stories of extraordinary women throughout history, accompanied by beautiful illustrations. The Wellfield Bookshop provides an impressive range of genres and books. However, in the unlikely event that you don’t find what you’re looking for, the friendly staff are more than happy to offer a customer ordering service, or suggest alternative and intriguing reading options. Octavo’s Book Café & Wine Bar Octavo's is Cardiff's newest independent Book Shop and, although less than a year old, has been Shortlisted for Independent Book Shop in The Bookseller Awards 2017. Located in a former coaching inn – built in 1839 and Cardiff Bay's oldest building - Octavo's is much more than just a book shop. As well as a carefully curated range of books Octavo's offers a wide range of freshly cooked food. This is the perfect place for book lovers to relax, browse and enjoy a meal or snack. The menu includes an excellent range of traditional Welsh dishes and we were delighted to see a lot of vegan and gluten-free options too. And, besides serving hot drinks, there is a choice of wine, cocktails and “mocktails”. There are also lots of regular events at Octavo's that will appeal to all ages. These include storytime for toddlers (both English and Welsh), book groups, writing masterclasses and quiz nights. the animal wall By Jamie L. Harding The first article I ever wrote for this magazine was about The Alliance – the sculpture just outside Cardiff Central Library. I wrote about how so many people pass this work of art each day without any idea of what it is or what it represents; to them it’s just ‘the big hoop and spear thing’ and nothing more. I wrote that article because I wanted to stress the importance of appreciating this city; Cardiff really is a wonderful place, filled with history and art and stories waiting to be told. There are pieces of it that we see every single day and yet never really take the time to admire, and I think that’s a shame.
Alexander Carrick in 1931 after the wall had to be moved in order to widen the road it runs alongside. It really is a beautiful feature of this city. I couldn’t help but notice the tourists eagerly photographing it, too, the children pointing and smiling as they passed by each one. They were fascinated by it. Captivated. I had passed this wall a hundred times – was lucky enough to live within walking distance of it – and yet I’d never really given it more than a half-hearted glance. It’s an odd trait that we humans have to take things for granted in this way. The information board which stands beside it revealed that the wall also given literary inspiration, too, with a children’s cartoon strip written by Dorothy Howard Rowlands appearing in the South Wales Echo entitled The Keepers of the Wall; a strip all about the animals atop its wall and the adventures they encountered across the city. I was semi-disappointed to hear this, because – as I’d strolled along taking in each animal, their little glass eyes staring back out at me - I’d planned on writing my own tale about the animals. I’d bring them to life in a story, as it were. Rowlands, however, beat me to it.
Allow me to bring one more to your attention. Just between Cardiff Castle and Bute Park is a wall, and a pretty distinctive wall, too. It’s adorned with animals made of stone – everything from a pelican and a beaver to a wolf and a bear – fifteen creatures in total, who remain perched there as though frozen in time, caught in the act of climbing out from the park grounds. It’s inventively called The Animal Wall - no prizes won for creativity of name, I’ll admit – but it really is spectacular. The wall was apparently designed by an architect named William Burges all the way back in 1866, however sadly Burges never lived to see his idea made a reality – he died in 1881, nine years before the wall was completed. The animals are divided into two groups; the old and the new; when the wall was first erected it held only nine sculptures. These were sculptured by Thomas Nicholls in 1890 and include the hyena, wolf, apes, seal, bear, lioness, lynx, and two separate lions. The further six animals – the pelican, ant-eater, raccoons, leopard, beaver and vulture – came later, sculptured by
Still, I can write this article instead, and though I may not be bringing the animals to life, per se, I am at least bringing them to your attention, and that’s certainly something! Next time you’re on Castle Street – whatever you’re doing and wherever you’re going – just take a moment to appreciate just how great the wall is. Say something to the seal. Give a high five to the hyena. They’re there – they’re always there, just waiting to be noticed.
