KUKIN PROGRAM FOR CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Dispute Resolution Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law | Yeshiva University Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution
Since 2001, Cardozo has been among the top 10 schools in the nation in the dispute resolution category in U.S. News & World Report. The school thanks our energetic and committed students and remarkable faculty for this achievement.
What do users of dispute resolution processes really want? How can we combine processes to capture all of their advantages without losing each individual process’ essential integrity? How do we train lawyers, together with other professionals, to be responsive to the crisis presented by disputes and deal-making? What can lawyers and dispute resolvers contribute to easing the current rash of incivility and extremism? And, how can we respond to the difficult conflicts of our time? We have so many exciting challenges and so little time. But, we can do it! This past year, the Cardozo Journal for Conflict Resolution’s International Advocate for Peace, Dr. Rajiv Shah, the current President of the Rockefeller Foundation, urged in his acceptance speech that “the pursuit of peace and … justice is something we should all be passionate, committed and energetic about.” And, yes we are. On November 13, 2017, the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution Annual Jed D. Melnick Symposium— Persistent Human Divides: Creative Initiatives for Communication, Collaboration, and Cohesion—will invite theorists, storytellers, academics, journalists, ADR practitioners and leaders in the dispute resolution community to explore the creative approaches to unify our communities. In 2018–19, we are planning to have the definitive program on Global Enforcement of Mediated Settlement Agreements—a current UN effort that may put mediation on a par with arbitration for commercial disputes. Please join us! Captured in this brochure are many ongoing efforts to further conflict resolution and train our exceptional students to be world leaders in the field. Enjoy! Lela P. Love Director, Kukin Program of Conflict Resolution Cardozo School of Law

In April 2017 at the ABA Dispute Resolution Conference in San Francisco, Lela Love (Director, Kukin Program) and Glen Parker (Cardozo LLM ‘11), editors of Stories Mediators Tell—World Edition, were joined by many of their storytellers for a conference session. This new book is a follow-up to Professor Love’s Stories Mediators Tell (2013). The World Edition features stories by 25 top international mediators describing “moving, successful, unsuccessful, happy, sad and funny mediations.” Captured in the book are remarkable tales of transformational mediations, as well as mediations where no genuine reconciliation occurred. Lessons about Diversity and Cross-Cultural Issues for Dispute Resolution Teachers Donna Erez-Navot (Interim Director, Cardozo Mediation Clinic), Brian Farkas (Adjunct Professor and Cardozo ’13), together with Sukhsimranjit Singh (Associate Director of the Straus Institute, Pepperdine Law School), led a session at the April 2017 ABA Dispute Resolution Conference in San Francisco on Teaching Negotiation on the Tower of Babel: Strategies in a Cross-Cultural Classroom or Workplace. Take-aways from the popular session included: diversity improves creativity and (in corporate contexts) financial earnings; cultural identity is unique for each individual (assume nothing!); insure your syllabus, small group leaders, and invited speakers include women and minorities, as that will inspire diverse students to speak up and participate more in class.
The Cardozo ADR Competition Honor Society (ADRCHS) finished second in a field of more than 100 teams in the 2017 ABA National Representation in Mediation Competition. At the 2017 Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Reginald Greene ’18 received an honorable mention for the Martin Domke Award for Individual Oralists. Veronika Waldhof, an LL.M. student in the Mediation Clinic, placed first in the mediator category in the Cyberweek eMediation Competition, sponsored by the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution/Cornell University. And, out of 20 teams competing, Cardozo’s LL.M. Team won the American University Washington College of Law LL.M. International Commercial Arbitration Moot. The Cardozo Journal for Conflict Resolution’s 2017 International Advocate Peace Award Goes to Rajiv Shah On April 6, 2017 students, alumni, faculty, and administration gathered to celebrate as the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution honored Dr. Rajiv Shah, President of the Rockefeller Foundation as the 2017 recipient of the International Advocate for Peace Award. Benjamin Dynkin, Editor in Chief, praised Dr. Shah for a lifetime of service and achievement. CJCR was ranked #7 in the country in global law journal rankings in the Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution category in the 2015 Washington & Lee rankings of law reviews. Additionally, CJCR was the 5th most cited journal in those same 2015 global rankings for the Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution category.

Founded in 1998 by a group of dedicated students, the highly regarded Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) each year publishes three volumes of cutting-edge scholarly articles and student notes that contribute to academic discourse in the field. The journal also regularly hosts an annual Jed D. Melnick Symposium that addresses pivotal topics in the ADR community. CJCR instituted and administers the International Advocate for Peace Award, which honors individuals who embody a passion for and commitment to the pursuit of peace and resolution of international conflicts. Past recipients include the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, Senator George Mitchell, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, playwright Eve Ensler, Ambassador Dennis Ross, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Honorable Daniel Weinstein, folk singers Peter, Paul and Mary, and filmmaker Abigail Disney. The Kukin Program was established in 1990 through a generous gift from the late Ira and Doris Kukin. Dr. Ira Kukin and his son, Jonathan Kukin ’87, were both members of the Board of Directors of Cardozo School of Law. The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law acknowledges with deep appreciation the leadership, financial support and friendship extended to the Kukin Program by Ira Kukin during his life.
ADR Competition Honor Society Cardozo’s ADR Competition Honor Society is a student-run organization that selects approximately 18 competitors each year to participate in an ADR moot camp and prepare for and compete in domestic and international competitions. The competitions—sponsored by the ABA, other law schools, and various international entities such as the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris—simulate negotiation, client counseling, representation in mediation, and arbitration. Cardozo faculty assist in preparing students for the competitions.
Cardozo Dispute Resolution Society Under dynamic student leadership, Cardozo Dispute Resolution Society (CDRS) programs complement the curriculum, offering workshops, brown-bag lunches, films and panels. CDRS is active in the greater ADR community, working closely with such organizations as Mediators Beyond Borders, the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association to promote and expand the field of conflict resolution. Pictured here from left to right are: Desmond Tutu, Professor Lela Love and the late Ira Kukin at the 2003 IAP Award Ceremony.
