Blockchain, an emergent technology concept enabling the decentralised and immutable storage of verified data has increasingly gained momentum in different industries over the last few years. The benefits over existing IT solutions must be carved out more carefully and use cases must be further explored to get a rather conservative industry, like logistics, more excited about blockchain. The government’s increased focus on Digital India has clearly pleased the leading warehouse automation solutions providers across the country. -DEEPASHREE BANERJEE

T

o shed light on this emerging field, Hamburg University of Technology and Kühne Logistics University conducted an online survey and asked logistics professionals for their opinion on use case exemplars, barriers, facilitators, and the general prospects of blockchain in logistics and supply chain management. It was found that most of the participants are fairly positive about this new technology and the benefits it offers. With budgets for the initiative doubling this year, it is deemed to be one of the key drivers of India’s economic growth, shares Samay Kohli, Group CEO, GreyOrange. The Union Budget for 2018-19 has visibly laid a strong emphasis on emerging technologies, such as Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data and IoT, which Kohli believes is an important step towards fostering innovation in the country. The announcement of a national program directed towards research and development of AI and Machine Learning, as well as efforts towards exploring blockchain technology, are testimony to the fact that India is taking significant steps to gain a rightful place on the global technology map. Along with the push on technology, the new provisions for financial support in the form of credit, financing and tax relief for MSMEs, will further boost the growth of smaller businesses in the country and help spur the Indian economy at large. “With the stage set, we look forward to a great year of growth for the robotics and automation sector,” Kohli sounds hopeful. Invented by Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin and initial creator of the Original Bitcoin client, blockchain has turned out to be the latest hype in Fintech, with almost daily announcements of new startups and corporate projects. Although it took longer for the logistics and supply chain management (SCM) community to discern the impact blockchain might have on this segment. The main reason behind blockchain being perceived a boon to the industry is the transparency factor. Every member of the network avails the same data, hence providing a single point of truth. Supply chain transparency is one

The original information stays put, leaving a permanent and public information trail, or chain of transactions. The structures of these ledgers are decentralized and highly secure which can’t be edited or changed. It is said that blockchain are not hackable and the cryptography-based and immutable nature of the transactions makes rare probability of compromise with the ledger. hands of end consumer, which can span across the globe for a single product. It’s very hard to track the complete chain; currently there are very limited ways to track any illicit activity with the supply chain. For a counterfeit product, customers aren’t track history of the product and even manufacturers face a lot of constraint in the investigation process. The transaction could be documented, creating a permanent history of the product, from manufacturing to sailing through the block chain technology.

Using digital records / blockchain abets cost reduction In blockchain, a data of every transaction would be recorded which can identify the parties involved, as well as the date, location, quality, price and state of the product and any other relevant information. This could dramatically

reduce time delays, added costs, and human error that plague transactions presently. It comes as no surprise that a good number of logistics experts consider blockchain to offer “enormous potential”, to be a “much-needed platform for economic renewal”, and to “transform the supply chain and disrupt the way we produce, market, purchase and consume our goods”. Taken together, blockchain might be nothing less than the “holy grail”. However, as it often is the case with emerging technology, the hype around blockchain seems primarily driven by technology providers, consultants, and journalists. Logistics operators, especially small and medium-sized companies, declare to have little knowledge

about blockchain. This can be explained through the novelty of the technology, but also through the lack of convincing use cases that clearly show blockchain’s benefit over existing IT solutions. Logistics and SCM research on blockchain is still in its infancy.

T his technolog y can acco m plish m ultiple tasks , as simplified by Khatri: • Recording the quantity and transfer of assets - like pallets, containers, etc. - as they move between supply chain nodes from one point to the other. • Tracking purchase orders, changes, dispatch, receipts, shipment notifications or other trade-related documents. • Assigning or verifying certifications, or certain properties of physical products. • Linking physical goods to serial numbers or IOT, bar codes, digital tags such as RFID, etc. • Sharing information about the manufacturing process, assembling, delivery and maintenance of products with various stakeholders.

Blockchain technology has proven to be beneficial for supply chain on a number of grounds • Transparency: In blockchain, each and every touch point is recorded which helps remove the opaque nature of supply chain and increases the trust.

12 CargoConnect - april 2018

• Accountability and Integrity: Since every touch point and every activity is recorded on real time basis and can’t be altered, it brings accountability with each stakeholder engaged in transactions. • Scalability: In any block chain environment, any number of

participants can access the process. In the process every node should be defined for access. • Cost and Time Reduction: Blockchains can greatly reduce transaction fees and transaction time. Multiple channels, multiple stakeholders can manage workflow on the same ledger, without any ambiguity or coordination challenge. • Claim Management: Claims are direct cost for supply chain companies, in case of any service failure. Blockchain can be helpful in root cause analysis of service failure and avoid repetition.

to test blockchains in a secure cloud. Global shipping line, Maersk and IBM are developing blockchain solution built on the Hyperledger Fabric for logistics industry which can manage and track the trails of tens of millions of containers across the globe by digitising the supply chain process to enhance transparency and the highly secure sharing of information among trading partners.

Is India lagging behind? In India, more than a dozen startups or tech companies are working on this technology; most of them are started in the fintech domain. Few players like Psi Phi Global or Sofocle have started offering services in the supply chain domain. This can easily lead to the prediction that blockchain will become the new operating system of supply chain in the years to

come. Currently, there are no packaged blockchain solutions for supply chain use; this might take three to five years to be off the shelf, shares Khatri.

logistics and supply chain industry, has recently launched a digital self-sustaining sensor integrated with a blockchain type distributed ledger. Nexiot’s self-sustaining sensors send messages every five minutes from various locations, including rail wagons, shipping containers, and boxes. The messages consist of updates on location, impact events, border crossing, and mileage. Enhanced with blockchain technology, the data securely held in the new digital ledger, includes a date and time stamp, making the information legally binding and adding a valuable layer of accountability to the journey of an asset and its goods. The Ledger can also automate payment fulfilment, proof of service delivery and third party service quality. Nexiot’s smart sensors processed over 100 million data points in January 2018.

has extended out of its core area and integrated themselves innovatively into the supply chain, further developing tighter supply chain collaboration with their suppliers/vendors, partners, authorities and even their customers. Both blockchain and IoT offer a set of capabilities and features that supply chain participants can collaboratively and expeditiously adopt using best of breed industry standards, integrated governance and compliance assurances that accompany such adoption. So, definitely these are the ingredients that can help to revolutionize the supply chain practice globally if proper adoption and take up happens. Luthria foresees to see significant strategic transformations and fairly quick tactical returns as blockchain solutions gain traction. For this rapid traction in the case of India and many other developing countries, the underlying infrastructure and business processes would need to be strengthened to extensively reap the benefits of platforms like blockchain

and IoT. If this is not done, the outcome would only be patchy and partial and the optimization and levels of accuracy and auditability would be less than perfect. In fact, such inconsistencies may end up introducing new problems in to the scenario. The touch points between business and authorities, context of adoption of systems like blockchain, are also areas where much effort and disruptive/ innovative thinking will be required. The way business and its interactions with authorities has been done for decades should not simply be modeled as-is into the new setup, rather every stage should be reviewed and any business processes that can be better done should be fully re-engineered to provide overall benefit to the participants and the economy in general. Aviraj Rathi, Managing Director, Namaste Group, opines that the trends which are going to become big in the coming years are going to be in the field of warehousing and airport handling services. “For Warehousing, blockchain

18 CargoConnect - april 2018

implementation seems a certainty now because having an automated record system of all the transactions that occur in a network would ensure access to trusted sources of data in real time. It could very well be one of the best methods to achieve transparency without having to compromise the privacy for security reasons.” In today’s business scenario, the customer tolerance time has reduced drastically, says Sandeep Chatterjee, Sr Manager, Deloitte. This means businesses have to be faster to market. In order to be faster to market, the vertically integrated structure is breaking down. There is always somebody who is faster and cheaper. Hence, more and more companies are moving to a compete and collaborate model. And supply chain is not an exception. Companies are retaining their core competencies and leaving the rest to their partners. “So, in an eco-system where there is more collaboration, there are more entities. And outsourcing comes at a cost in terms of coordination and control. And

if we have to control the supply chain, we need to have real-time data. And the need of the hour is data which is not centrally controlled as this will help build the trust issues. We can have the best system, best processes and best people but if there is no trust, the entire supply chain breaks down,” Chatterjee adds. Blockchain Technology will help build the trust as every entity records his/her data which cannot be altered. This brings in real-time data monitoring, transparency and trust in the supply chain. Though blockchain started first in the financial domain, many companies are experimenting with blockchain in supply chain as they move to a compete and collaborate model. We already have the technology in place and which is affordable. Hence, there will be a significant increase in blockchain adoptions. There are concerns around standards and cyber security but with time these will be ironed out. And, yes the prices have to come down further so that even small and medium enterprises can afford it.

Undoubtedly, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is growing at a very fast pace. As per a recent report by the Equity Master, the Indian pharmaceuticals market is the third largest in terms of volume and thirteenth largest in terms of value, and it accounts for 20 per cent in the volume terms and 1.4 per cent in value terms of the Global Pharmaceutical Industry. India actually enjoys an important position in the global pharmaceuticals sector. The country also has a large pool of scientists and engineers who have the potential to steer the industry ahead to an even higher level. Presently, over 80 per cent of the anti-retroviral drugs used globally to combat AIDS are supplied by Indian pharmaceutical firms. Indian pharmaceutical market is expected to grow to US$100 billion by 2025 and US$ 55 billion by 2020, thereby, emerging as the sixth largest pharmaceutical market globally by absolute size. The sector is also expected to generate 58,000 additional job opportunities by the year 2025. In addition, Indian pharmaceutical companies received 305 Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) approvals from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) in 2017 which provided many other benefits to the industry.

Observing the same, Mohammed Esa, Senior Vice President, Global Business Development and CCO Europe, Agility says, “Overall, the Indian pharmaceutical industry is growing. Indian manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies, such as Biocon and Dr. Reddy’s, have become global multinationals. In parallel to this development, other global pharma players are expanding operations in India. The combinations are bringing the industry needs and standards to another level. The market is going to flourish, both from local consumption and because India is becoming a key exporter. The growing demand is resulting in an increased need for temperature-regulated transportation solutions. Ultimately, all the supply chain stakeholders are dealing with the safety of patients. Everybody– from manufacturer, freight forwarder, airlines to handling agents – has to collaborate closely to ensure data transparency and product integrity.”

On a positive note, Udit Mangal, Business Manager – Healthcare, PLUSS Advanced Technologies Pvt Ltd affirms, “As a global pharma player, India is going through a very interesting phase. Indian exports now have 20 per cent share of global pharma exports by volume with the highest number of FDA approved sites after the US. According to estimates by the ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce by India), currently at $30 billion, by 2020, India is expected to capture 6-7 per cent ($55 billion) of a $760 Billion global generics market.”

Investments According to the reports, “The Union Cabinet has given its nod for the amendment of the existing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy in the pharmaceutical sector in order to allow FDI up to 100 per cent under the automatic route for manufacturing of med ica l dev ices subject to certain conditions. The drugs and phar maceutica ls sector attracted cumulative FDI inflows worth US$ 15.570 billion between April 2000 and September 2017, according to data released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Some of the major investments in the Indian pharmaceutical sector are as follows: 1. The exports of Indian pharmaceutical industry to the US will get a boost, as branded drugs worth US$ 55 billion will become off-patent during 2017-2019. 2. Private equity and venture capital ( PE-VC) i n v e s t m e n t s i n t h e pharmaceutical sector have grown at 38 per cent year-on-year between January-June 2017, due to major deals in this sector.

Existing Bottlenecks & Solutions Though there are several positive developments bei ng done by the concerned authorities and the industry is on a positive growth trajectory, there are few bottlenecks that hinder the growth and needs immediate attention, l i ke i n ad e q uat e i n f r a st r uct u r e , inadequacy in supply chain management process, un-trained labour to mention a few. Considering the same, Mangal stresses, “While the Indian pharma industry has embarked on a growth trajectory aspiring to become a hub for low manufacturing and R&D, the quality and price pressures have spiraled across the value chain. The growth in efficient supply chain network hasn’t really kept the pace with overall sector growth. Lack of efficient, economic and local packaging solutions is the biggest roadblock towards achieving the supply chain efficiencies. It is now, therefore, well-acknowledged that operational and supply chain efficiencies are keys to continue being a significant global player and to be able to meet rising demand of affordable healthcare.” Also, Mangal feels that that the Pharmaceutical industry is highly complex and fragmented and there are multiple stakeholders and intermediaries who loose visibility and control of the product’s movement beyond a certain point, typically beyond the clearing and forwarding agents. “The result is damaged products, rejection from the customers and greater risk to patients putting further pressure on the already suffering patients with

the increasing cost of products,” adds Mangal. Citing some solutions, Shankar Iyer, Director Cargo India, Middle East & Africa, Swiss WorldCargo assures, “We are continuing to take steps to ensure a smooth pharma supply chain and avoid bottlenecks. First, we have defined clear processes for our people, as well as our partners and handling agents around the world, to help us mitigate unexpected circumstances or disruptions. These clearly defined plans help us to ensure the safest and fastest delivery of goods throughout the world. Second, we are continuing to invest in our ‘quality corridors’ – the network of certified trade lanes that covers global pharma routes, and ensures the safe delivery and product integrity in global cold chain handling. This includes ensuring that quality extends throughout our network and through our ground handling partner, Cargologic –both CEIV certified and GDP compliant. Likewise, our Qualified Envirotainer Program (QEP) ensures that our ground staff is fully trained and prepared to handle Envirotainers throughout the world. Finally, our range of products and storage facilities is designed to meet the needs of customers operating in a temperature-sensitive supply chain. This helps us to ensure efficiency, safe delivery, and to reduce bottlenecks that could otherwise come up based on the demands of our customers.” O n a p o s it ive note , C h r i s t i a n Fleisch h auer, Sen ior P roduct s

Significance of End-toEnd Visibility & Last Mile Delivery (LMD) The end-to-end visibility and the LMD constitute a very important part of supply chain process, especially in the case of pharmaceutical products,

because we cannot compromise with the health of the patients. The pharma products have to reach on-time, without any delay or disruption that too with hundred per cent quality assurance. Commenting on the same, Fleischhauer reiterates, “The punctual arrival of effective medicines is often a matter of life and death. So for Lufthansa Cargo, it is essential that these goods arrive in perfect condition. Our product Cool/ td utilises active and passive cooling to enable you to specify the exact temperature, or temperature range. For example, we offer uninterrupted recording of temperature data for our active cool containers and the documentation of the transport chain plus special proactive communication for Cool/td-Active. Our customers can get the current status of their shipments around to (EDI)/Traxon. Lufthansa Cargo offers a variety of active cool containers and advanced passive packaging e.g. va-Q-tainer to bridge the first and the last mile for our customers. Timely delivery and pick up at the airports in combination with temperature controlled ramps and trucks help to keep the temperature controlled chain unbroken.” Agreeing with Fleischhauer, Iyer insists, “End-to-end visibility is an important goal throughout the pharma supply chain, as it offers a complete overview of the entire supply chain, as well as provides insight into the operations of different respective stakeholders. moving away from a traditional, topdown model of product promotion and toward a flexible, interactive approach that gives patients better tools and more focused information about the drugs they are taking and how to manage their conditions.

Pharma companies that s u cc e e d i n p a t i e n t engagement efforts increase their chances of regulatory and commercial success. As per the experts, to productively collaborate with patients, pharma companies need to find better ways of communicating with them. They also need a more effective data analytics practice: a way to gather and analyze d at a ab out pat ie nt s’ d ay-to-d ay compliance with treatment protocols and the efficacy of the treatments. Although many patients are sensitive about sharing personal information, a recent survey by PwC’s Health Research Institute found that most people are willing to let pharma companies and regulators know about their medical activities if it will lead to better care. Due to advances in digital and medical technology, pharma companies and healthcare providers can access patient data seamlessly, in real time, and with little inconvenience for patients. An array of tools can be combined with online portals and mobile apps to foster better, more immed iate communication. These include newly approved equipment such as miniature

pharma player, India is going through a very interesting phase. Indian exports now have 20 per cent share of global pharma exports by volume with the highest number of FDA approved sites after the US. According to estimates by the ASSOCH AM (Associated Chambers of Commerce by India), currently at $30 billion, by 2020, India is expected to capture 6-7 per cent ($55 billion) of a $760 Billion global generics market. However, while the Indian pharma has embarked on a growth trajectory aspiring to become a hub for low manufacturing and R&D, the quality and price pressures have spiraled across the value chain. Pharma sector’s revenues are expected to grow by nine per cent yearon-year through fiscal 2020.

38 CargoConnect - april 2018

Also, the Indian government has taken many initiatives to reduce costs and bring down healthcare expenses. Speedy introduction of generic drugs into the market has remained in focus and is expected to benefit the Indian pharmaceutical companies.

Some of the initiatives taken by the government to promote the pharmaceutical sector in India are: 1. The Government of India is planning to set up an electronic platform to regulate online pharmacies under a new policy, in order to stop any misuse due to easy availability. 2. The authorities unveiled ‘Pharma Vision 2020’ aimed at making India a global leader in end-to-end drug manufacture. Approval time for new facilities has been reduced to boost investments. 3. T h e g o v e r n m e n t i n t r o d u c e d mechanisms such as the Drug Price

Control Order and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority to deal with the issue of affordability and availability of medicines. Predicting the future, Reddy affirms, “In my view, the Indian Pharma Industry will be experiencing global competition and it will overcome by improving R&D capabilities, scientific talent and sound infrastructure development like roads, ports multimodal transportation, warehousing and cold chain logistics.” However, Mangal avows that the future of Indian Pharma Industry depends on actions we take today. “While the platform is ready to continue our growth trajectory, to build on this platform is in our hands. The quality and price pressures have spiraled across the value chain of pharma, unless this is dealt with utmost care, we may lose our turf to the growing markets of China and equivalents. And, therefore, the future will only bear the fruits of the seeds we sow today.” Esa also shares their future plans and concludes by saying, “We are mainly focusing on the organic growth. We have also recognized that technology is a key driver to gain growth. Transforming the Future of

Warehousing

in India Over the course of time warehousing industry in India has evolved beyond decrepit buildings called godowns meant for the purpose of storing goods to highly sophisticated stockrooms, where, advanced tracking mechanisms helps keep a real time tracking of every shipment at the touch of a button. Without these state-ofthe-art facilities and effective mechanisms, it would have been arduous task for companies to ship and deliver consignments to the designated consignee. - Upamanyu Borah

believe the country will attract original equipment manufacturers to set up their units within a few years, thanks to low production costs. The Indian market for warehouse automation has been projected to grow at a CAGR of 10-12 per cent during 2015-2020, and is expected to reach $3.49 billion by 2020.

Today, warehouses face new regulations for more accurate product tracing and tracking. Warehouses are also getting closer to customers due to the move to re-shoring and omnichannel transactions. Therefore, manufacturers ensure efficiency in their business activities so that they can please these customers across the board. As larger facilities and bigger spaces are being constructed, and customers’ demand personalise manifold (increasing the number of SKUs); it has become imperative to adapt to the trends that are likely shaping the future of supply chain and warehousing.

Explaining the importance of how automation of warehouses will facilitate the growth of businesses, Akash Gupta, Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer, GreyOrange -Singapore and Gurgaon headquartered warehouse automation Company, says, “Businesses are striving to provide their best to the customers and the whole supply-demand cycle is undergoing a sea change. With the plethora of choices and increasing exposure, customers now define what is manufactured, rather than the other way round. Customers have gotten used to personalised services and we are soon approaching an era where customers’ heightened expectations will force sellers to make a product with multiple customisation/ personalisation available out of the box. To ensure and enable this, it is crucial to automate the warehouses to make them operate effectively and efficiently and communicate with each other. Warehouses will become customisation centres/ hubs, and not just spaces that stack boxes”.

arehouses have a pivotal role in the entire supply chain, from storing raw materials to creating customer delight. Specifically, in the manufacturing sector, with lean manufacturing becoming customary, a significant part of the functions from scheduling to labelling and packaging are being outsourced to third party logistics providers. But, eventually the warehousing industry is gearing up with the advent of newer and newer technologies to meet all these latest requirements.

A step ahead As India evolves as an economy, sophisticated logistics and warehousing systems have triggered the manufacturing sector and the entire gamut of trade activities. Not just conventional storing services, warehouses in India provide value-added services like consolidation and breaking up of cargo, packaging, labelling, bar coding, reverse logistics, etc. The country is pegged as one of the key markets for warehouse automation systems in Asia and analysts

According to Jasmine Singh, Head – Industrial & Logistics Services, CBRE South Asia Pvt Ltd, with warehouses becoming automated and technologically advanced, the overall supply chain will become more efficient as there will be:

From the end-consumer perspective, warehouse automation will lead to lower prices and improved service quality.”

Automation in high-demand

Today, the prime compelling reason for manufacturers, e-commerce giants, retail, and logistics industry to embrace warehouse automation enthusiastically is that it improves efficiency and quality of work dramatically and reduces human labour. Besides, improving performance inventories, the emergence of industrial hubs and uniform tax structure, GST, etc. has also been a push in the right direction and has enabled the logistics and supply chain industry to adopt automation and other newer technologies to facilitate efficient supply chain functioning.

The robot uprising has swooped into India and new generations of robots are filling the warehouses– with manufacturing units, logistics sector, automobile industry, retail and e-commerce sector being the major adopters of warehouse automation. This shift to robotics also marks India’s foray into hardware affection. Of late, the country has been the biggest seller of software services, and warehouse automation which has placed it on the global scenario as a country quantified extensively for its hardware competence. Revealing the sudden urge to embrace warehouse automation, J a h n a v i Gokulakrishnan, Senior Research Analyst, Transportation & Logistics Practice, Frost & Sullivan, says, “Retail commerce is becoming increasingly omnichannel in nature. Speed, agility, visibility into the supply chain, etc. are increasingly becoming the distinguishing factors and the source of competitive edge. Adopting automation in warehouse operations will enable companies to achieve this competitive edge. From the perspective of

Gupta says that handling excessively high volumes of packages of different shapes and sizes, shipments to numerous locations and services including ‘sameday-delivery’ and ‘next-day-delivery’ are challenges that are tackled by automating inventory management and sortation processes. With fewer order-picking errors, better inventory management and increased levels of efficiency, a company is able to deliver products at real time, ensuring faster turnaround, thus enabling a better customer experience. Thus, automation (resulting in higher efficiency) is an integral part of delivering a good customer experience.

The stimulator There is no denying the fact that effective distribution of cargo is crucial for the growth of manufacturing and trade. To have a strong supply chain in place, the type of warehouse and its location are equally important. An efficient warehouse can bring a 15-20% cost reduction in the entire logistics operations. towards looking at the supply chain function as a profit driver instead of a cost factor, many manufacturers are looking at outsourcing a significant part of their operations to warehousing companies. Just-in-Time techniques have put a large responsibility on warehouses of maintaining optimum efficiencies thus enlarging their role. Further, the overall shift to e-commerce is happening at an even faster pace than many retailers and warehouse automation providers had imagined just a couple years ago. With the persistent rise of online shopping and changing buyer expectations, speed and accuracy of delivery has spurred e-commerce companies to find faster ways to reach customers. The fast growth of e-commerce has brought about higher direct-to-consumer throughput requirements and many other changes to fulfilment operations. According to Warehouse Automation and Control Global Market Research, the retail fulfilment paradigm shift is seeing a new dimension with e-commerce giants competing aggressively to accomplish faster deliveries. And that’s where warehouse automation and control system sales are stimulating growth by boosting operational efficiency. Last year, leading supply chain and logistics company, Gati KWE, and Indian e-commerce giant, Flipkart, signed on Pitney Bowes TrueSort – an automated system capable of processing a combination of parcels, polywrap bags, magazines and flats with speed and precision, and, the Pitney Bowes

OneSort – an all-in-one data capture solution that enables users to instantly process instructions for labeling, routing, postal documentation, client billing, and custom reporting while receiving full access to critical information through a comprehensive data stream. E-commerce companies are not the only ones. Reportedly, GreyOrange, that put

India on the global map by bagging global clients such as Hong Kong-based Kerry Logistics and Singapore-based logistics company, Ninja Van, has even added Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies to its roster of clients. The company has its solutions implemented in 55 warehouses in India and abroad.

still being widely used, Quick Response (QR) Code is now popularly used to encode data to computer-compatible digital data, and accelerate the flow of a shipment among its beneficiaries. Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) have become essential for a wide range of automated data collection and identification applications that helps

warehouse operators to keep a track of goods coming in or going out their perimeter. Smartphone apps and GPS technology have already filled the gap between factories and roads. Moreover, Warehouse Management System (WMS) and other IT-driven solutions are effectually increasing the competitiveness of the warehousing industry.

environment—apparently, logistics and supply chain operations are evolving to meet the trend. Here are few things to look for in warehouse automation technology to ensure the systems deployed today continue to deliver returns into the future.

These ‘futuristic warehouse’ ideas include: Advanced Robotics and self-driving vehicles: Robotic equipments have been used in material handling for some time now. But the new generation of advanced robots incorporates enhanced levels of sensing capabilities and algorithms allowing them to better sense their environment and make decisions based on the changing environment. Powered by artificial intelligence, the fleet of robots is adding value by carrying products and automating the picking and packing process inside the warehouse, thereby reducing the dependence on personnel. By 2020, robots are expected to be operating independently in warehouses. Self-driving vehicles like trucks would be added to warehouse fleets in order to make better and efficient use of time, and gas or energy. When a self-driving truck comes across something unexpected between warehouse and delivery destination, the deep neural network would send back updates to the fleet of trucks, who then learn how to cope with that encounter. Wearable tech: The next big advancement in logistics tech could be augmented reality: wearable digital systems that promise to reinvent the costly and cumbersome

load Stop picking process in warehouses. For example, the SynQ (Synchronized Intelligence) software platform combines sensor data with warehouse models and simulations to create a digital “copy” of the warehouse. Pickers could wear glasses that recognize and scan items automatically, rather than search for a product and manually scan it. Planners can visualize a new warehouse or display store in full-scale, at the conceptual stage itself. Heads-up and windshield displays would allow truck drivers to re-route shipments to overcome roadblocks or

match real-time demand. Automated Inventory Storage: Providing dense storage that maximizes floor space, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) integrate automated hardware and software for accurate picking and replenishment. These systems automatically locate and deliver the required inventory to a conveyor system, manual outfeed, or an ergonomic operator station. This translates to reduction in labour, floor space and inventory levels, while increasing accuracy and

special feature productivity in comparison to manual storage methods. For instance, Butler is a type of AI-equipped robotic system that adds value by managing inventories like a professional and reduces order fulfilment efficiently. This robotics system can also adapt to the changing inventory and works like a goods-to-person robotic system for automated inventory storage (put-away) and replenishment and are powered by machine learning to pick and combine orders in fulfilment centre. 3-D printing: At present,3-D printing technology is in its nascent stages, but by next decade we should expect to witness them fully in use in warehouses. The supply chain will be shortened significantly when warehouses can simply print the inventory they once had to wait to be shipped. It will also create new niche opportunities as companies will find unique ways to develop and print inventory. Two major achievements can therefore be expected–Masscustomization and Stock Reduction.

Drones: Drones are already being used by warehouses to ferry items from one place to the other, producing more accurate results than humans. Amazon and Walmart have taken the lead in developing a drone workforce combined with RFID technology that could significantly automate inventory management. Drones can also help in real-time monitoring and resolve the outof-stock problem. Predictive maintenance: Using “big data,” warehouses may be able to predict

customer purchases or an order before it even takes place. These predicted products are automatically sent in a mobile warehouse to a location near the customer and could potentially be delivered within one hour of ordering. That kind of foresight will help businesses complete deliveries more quickly than ever before. Mobile warehouses could also facilitate reverse flows, by gathering returned packages and bringing them back to the real warehouse at the end of the day. It is expected that the market for predictive analysis software could reach $6.5 billion by 2019. Net-zero buildings: Estimates suggest that by the end of 2029 warehouses will be part of an initiative to achieve zero net energy. To become net-zero, a project will have to generate 100 per cent of its energy on-site through the use of renewable energy. By creating strategies for the use of renewable energy, warehouses will save costs and prevent harmful emissions. Solar panels will become the main source of energy for warehouses. This will assist in running

“With less fixed infrastructure and processes, warehouses of the future will work on real time analytics and will be intelligent enough to understand the entire external ecosystem around them. For instance, if it rains heavily on a particular day causing delay in the movement of goods, the smart warehouses will have the intelligence to anticipate approximate delay in the arrival of goods into the warehouse and will allocate resources to other tasks in the meantime”, concludes Gupta explaining the critical role of futuristic warehouses. Market experts anticipate that in the coming years intelligence designed into material handling equipments will grow exponentially, as will connectivity between systems and their environment. Tech-savvy workers will operate intelligent machines, working alongside robots and autonomous forklifts in highly automated operations. Every activity will leave a digital footprint that will be consolidated, aggregated, and analyzed to drive continuous improvement. The result will be supply chains that are more efficient, more reliable, and allow products to be moved at lower costs.

upply chain management is considered to be one of the highly agile areas in present times. Smart use of technology is the backbone of profits and progress in the supply chain management. Indian logistics market is a highly competitive marketplace and companies can’t afford to fall behind even for a few days. As the supply chain of businesses evolves every passing day, there is always preconceived belief that strategy which worked today might not yield desired results tomorrow. Logistics service providing companies need to keep a close watch on emerging trends to maintain their competitive edge in the industry. In this technological era, functional silos have lost their place in companies. Technology has integrated different departments in such a way that their individuality has got lost completely. Companies should focus more on identifying and breaking functional silos to achieve high degree of efficiency.

Morgan Stanley report states, Indian e-commerce market will hit $200 billion mark by the year 2026. Every year e-commerce has been fueling growth of the logistics industry and the year 2017 also witnessed boost from ecommerce sectore. Recently, the growth rate was really tremendous as online shopping straight away jumped from 10 per cent to nearly 30 per cent of total retail sales. This exponential growth has been constantly pushing the supply chain industry to come up with new ways of moving products from warehouses to customers. Supply chain is continuously evolving and the time is not faraway when goods will be moved straight from warehouse to customer’s home instead of moving goods from a warehouse to storefronts. Aaryav Gupta, Director – Global Business Development, Pridel Private

Limited talked in length about how technology is playing a vital role in the evolvement of supply chain and also threw light on the concept of block chain, a new trend in the supply chain. Gupta said,“Supply chain is considered as one of the most crucial areas of any organisation because it impact the smooth and efficient working of the organsiation. Such a high importance of supply chain makes supply chain functioning further more crucial. In broader terms, technological advancements are happening in different scopes for increasing visibility and reducing costs through automation. This in-turn is benefitting clients by reducing complexities of supply

Also, different companies are applying trial and error methods for the improvement of last mile logistics, which is very necessary for an efficient operation of supply chain function. Omni channel supply chain management has emerged as one of the possible solutions for the improvement of supply chain function. “Automation is bringing a big change in the entire industry. cal infrastructure powered by technology and automation in order to operate at maximum efficiency.” Logistics has taken front seat in every business and no one can deny the fact that it is one of the crucial factors for the success of any business. Top business management should get involve and invest more time and energy in taking decisions related to supply chain processes for better optimisation of supply chain. If companies have to ride the wave of burgeoning e-commerce thensenior executives need to be involved in their supply chain departments.

Technological advancements are happening at galloping speed to increase supply chain visibility and cost reduction. Uday Sharma, Director – Sales, Spoton Logistics Pvt Ltd says, “The entire supply chain is poised to adopt modern technology and innovations for the enhancement of efficiency and accountability.” He categorically mentioned about the innovations that are facilitating growth of the supply chain processes, emerging supply chain trends and role of automation in supply chain transformations. Sharma says, Innovations to bring supply chain efficiency RFID technology has already gained prominence in the supply chain management. It is not just merely a replace-

ment for barcodes, but RFID ensures that the right goods are available in the right place with no discrepancies and zero errors. It plays a vital role in making the supply chain considerably more precise and improves the efficiency and reliability of the entire chain. Data analytics is fundamental for successful and efficient supply chain operations. Traceability and forecasting are an integral part of supply chain and operations management, and data analytics acts as a driving force behind these activities. Running Data analytics on route optimisation helps in finding opportunities in the network which results in better service and customer experience. Piece Level Tracking capability is the ability to track and monitor the transit of consignments from shipper to consignee at individual piece level. Here each box can be tracked to provide complete visibility of each individual box. Shortage and pilferage which are two critical aspects in a supply chain can be minimized by Piece Level Tracking. Autonomous Material Handling Equipment make the supply chain turn around more quick and efficient. It leads to low manpower requirement and increases productivity which in turn brings stable level of quality. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) helps in easing manual data entry and allows the consignment note to be read by the computer whereby data entry happens automatically.

Emerging Suppy Chain Trends Customer experience - Every emerging trend has to be directly aligned to changing consumer experience along with bringing higher levels of transparency. The companies will require to come up with new innovations to create unique customer experiences. For example, Amazon has already started developing its response to this trend with Amazon Prime Air, a future service that will allow it to deliver packages of five pounds or less to customers within 30 minutes via drones. Transparency - Complete transparency in product manufacturing and its delivery have become a fundamental aspect. With new advances in technology, such as the IoT (Internet of Things) and big data, companies are able to gain complete visibility of their entire supply chain. It helps in making dynamic decisions and better optimisation of resources. Digitisation - It is the process of using the latest tech solutions together with other physical and digital assets to redesign logistics practices. There is no need to mention that digitisation is not only driving the logistics industry but at the helm of other industries as well. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Advanced AI solutions have numerous applications in the supply chain, especially in the warehousing segment. This includes use of gesture recognition solutions instead of keyboards and mice in the procurement process. It also includes autonomous vehicles (self-driving cars)

which are designed to navigate without human input. Role of Automation in Supply Chain Transformation Sharma concluded his note by highlighting automation’s role in transformation of supply chain and said, “Automation plays a significant role in logistics and supply chain management. Introduction of Robotics has enhanced inbound and outbound logistics for shippers and end-to-end automated conveyor belts have largely improved warehousing functions. Dock Levellers are also enabling better efficiency and quicker turnaround time in the loading bay area.” According to a survey conducted by the global management consulting firm, PRTM, there are several key supply chain challenges with which several global companies are struggling in the present scenario. Firstly, consumers have become more price conscious and brand loyalty has decreased considerably which is resulting in commoditization and constant increase in supply chain volatility. Secondly, companies are looking forward to serve international customers to leverage growth of the foreign markets. But, only a few companies are prepared for the complexity that results from serving global customers with regionally customised products. Thirdly,end-to-end supply chain cost optimisation has become a critical factor in business success. Fourthly, the scope of risk and opportunity management should span the entire supply

chain including the supply chains of key partners. Fifthly, existing supply chain organisations are not completely integrated or empowered – lack of integration between product development and manufacturing functions are standing in the way of capturing the benefits of economic recovery.

Introduction of Robotics has enhanced inbound and outbound logistics for shippers and end-to-end automated conveyor belts have largely improved warehousing functions. Assessing supply chain performance leads to identification of problems and opportunities. Having a strategy and measuring key parts are necessary to understand and take control of supply chain. Put the process, people and technology in place to create competitive advantage, both

for today and tomorrow. If you do not, a competitor will. Supply chain success involves process, people and technology. It gives definition to the company purpose. It enables all participants to know what is required. This in turn provides agility to handle exceptions and to adapt to changes. Having these three elements is

important to having metrics, ones that are useful across the organisation. All three working together in a company provides coordinated, unified effort to use supply chain management as a driving force in customer satisfaction and in having competitive advantage, with service and productivity.Supply chains must be designed to serve the base of the pyramid. Supply chain management practices are growing rapidly but there are challenges to be addressed by the logistics industry. First the industry has to find methods for overcoming these supply chain challenges then only companies will get success in their endeavor to leverage current growth of the market.

Interview

“Blockchain Technology to RevolutionISE the LOGISTICS Industry” Please comment on the current scenario of the Indian logistics market and how do you foresee its future? The market is very much tied in the growth of the Indian economy and the numbers suggest a 7 – 7.5 per cent growth. There are two things happening at the moment - first, the demand for Indian products abroad is going to continue. Increased manufacturing is growing up with scales and buyers abroad are very keen to source support from India as they also want to diversify from China and so on. Therefore, you will see an increase in demand for imports and exports. Second, as the consumer influx grows in India, there will be a continuous demand for products from around the world, so we will see the continuous rise of that sort of e – commerce. Of course, in general, as the national activity picks up, industry needs to import capital equipment, raw materials and many different things. Thirdly, since the investments and development that is being done by the government in multiple programs and the policy changes through GST, it means the trade and commerce and distributions will become easier and you will see there will be an increasing demand for logistics business which will go healthily in double digits in the foreseen future.

Please throw light on the key trends driving the Indian Logistics Industry. I would like to answer this question from two perspectives – what is happening inside the firms, and second, what will happen when companies will start to collaborate with each other and other parties

58 CargoConnect - april 2018

DAMCO, one of the world’s leading logistics service providers is increasingly investing in e-commerce market to get hold of international customers and soon launch TWILL, an advanced digital platform for customers. Vishal Sharma, CEO, DAMCO (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka), in an exclusive interview with Ritika Arora Bhola elaborates on the new trends driving the Indian logistics industry, current operations and supply chain management process, the company’s upcoming projects and future of the logistics industry.

in the ecosystem. Today, companies are increasingly making use of data analytics and that’s a popular trend. Companies are now able to learn how to use and organize insights from data. Above that, robotics and automation which is a growing trend, a lot of manual work does go into it. Companies are using robotics to process automation largely. Companies are hugely investing in it and exploring it. Also, companies are digitising their interface with the customers; now exchange of documents with customers is happening via e-mails, attachments and online documentation. A lot of interaction that happens between a company and a customer is a mix of analog and technology, and that interface now needs to pick up more and more. DAMCO has introduced its own digital freight forwarding platform – TWILL and its live now. If you are based in UK or some other country and you want to book containers online you can use this platform. The interaction with shippers and consignees at DAMCO is highly digitized and its a completely different experience. When companies will collaborate with each other and other parties in the ecosystem, they will get familiar with the Blockchain technology which will be a game changer for the logistics industry because this technology is for the parties that are trying to be with each other or deal with each other but there’s lack of trust. They can now work with Blockchain Technology. For instance, there has been a joint venture between Maersk and IBM last year. Also, there is an open parking neutral platform which will allow all parties in the eco-system to be connected

and you can see the friction in the freight industry over the next few months. I would say that this technology would accelerate. Blockchain will bring revolution in the industry per say and companies in their own way are doing a lot to increase internal process and becoming more digital.

Please elaborate on DAMCO’s current operations and supply chain strategies for effective solutions. In DAMCO, we have three different segments –first is our supply chain management, where we manage business for some of the world’s top companies. Our role is to make sure that whatever they are buying from India is handled smoothly. Today, India has efficient infrastructure, but port and hinterland connectivity is yet to be developed. There are many disruptions and contingencies due to reasons such as strikes, bad weather conditions, festivals etc. What we focus on from process and integrity point of view is to strengthen our contingency plans and make them robust. For instance, if cargo is in transit from Moradabad or Panipat, we make sure that we have at least five or six different roads to take so that cargo reaches the port on time. During any on-ground or physical situation, with our contingency plans we are able to maintain a 97 – 98 per cent on time ratio around the world for cargo delivery. From our capability point of view, we focus on this and from technology point of view, we make sure that our systems are able to communicate and offer visibility to our customers with live tracking, GPS, etc. so there’s always full transparency in what we are doing. This helps us gain trust which ultimately propels our actions. Therefore, it’s a mix of investing in capabilities and technology to manage the contingencies that come when dealing with India.

Your future Projects We have partly rolled out our digital freight forwarding platform called TWILL, through which international customers can book their containers. This platform will soon be available for the Indian exporters as well. We are working on improving and adding new features to it. Certainly, on the freight forwarding side, it’s a big technology that we are launching and have a lot of focus on. On the supply chain side, we see a trend cross-border, e-commerce industry is strong and the Indians are buying brands from abroad. We are working on e-commerce transactions which we have ruled out in China, and DAMCO as a supply chain partner will make sure that the products are available cross-border. So, this is the one new product and one new process that we are launching and currently focusing on.

Successfully implementing BEST global practices in India Future Supply Chain Solution Ltd, India’s first fully integrated and IT enabled end-to-end Supply Chain and Logistics service provider has been offering solutions to customers which helps optimise their performance, cost and efficiency of their supply chains, shortening their lead-time to market. PV Sheshadri, CEO, Future Supply Chain Solution Ltd in a candid conversation with Upamanyu Borah, talks about the genesis of their operations, USP, implementation of technology and automation in their logistics operations, and core organisational values. Excerpts follow! How has your company evolved overtime to being one of India’s largest organised thirdparty supply chain and logistics service providers? How extensive is your network? The whole story goes way back to 2006. The idea of Future Group was to run an aggressive plan, to build up a robust supply chain which is at par with global standards. There was an existing supply chain department within the company but it was just catering and responding to the requirements of the retail segment. It was imperative to build a world class supply chain infra with the best practices and for that Future Group was seeking for world class supply chain support to realise the overall plans and objectives. Unfortunately, Future Group could not find much option to support extraordinary level of growth. Therefore, the whole focus shifted to a different idea of creating an own entity with world class standards (technologically advanced and highly automated) which would aid to Future Group’s objectives and also the country’s

industry’s requirements. As such, Future Supply Chain, which was then known as Future Logistics Solutions Limited, came to existence. By 2007, Future Supply Chain was active in the industry. Today, FSC has a wide span of network with 14 hubs and 107 branches all over India and 47 State of the Art warehouses, including 6 Logistic parks covering approximately 0.44 million sq. meter area. Some of the major warehousing locations include Mihan (Nagpur), Kulana (Delhi), Bhiwandi (Maharashtra), Barasat (West Bengal),Mehsana (Gujarat), Whitefield&Nelamangala (Bangalore), and Red Hills (Chennai). We cater to the major players in Food & Beverages, AUTOMOBILE, FMCG, Lifestyle, Consumer Durables, Healthcare, General Merchandise and E-Commerce with tailor made solutions unique to each of them.

Please elaborate on the Digital Transformation process happening and those impending in your company? FSC has implemented a host of integrated software applications and hardware along with an app to provide online real time visibility across all legs of ‘Store’ and ‘Move’ in the supply chain. i) We have implemented a best-in-class; radio-frequency-enabled Warehouse Management System (WMS) in our DCs that provide complete visibility of inventory in the warehouse and contributes by substantially improving the productivity, order fulfillment and accuracy. FSC has also integrated WMS processes with ARS (Automatic Replenishment System) which ensures generation and availability of correct assortment with correct quantity of all major fast moving items on store shelves all the time. ii) In 2012, FSC introduced Put to Light (PTL) Sortation system, a light directed sortation mechanism which is used once batch picking is done. It enables category specific segregated packaging and therefore is entirely shelf ready. iii) Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), which enables our customers to track their goods online and in real-time while in transit.iv) Our Transport Management System (TMS) provides shipment-level visibility from pick-up, to delivery, to billing as well as routing solutions, and is linked to the company’s enterprise resource planning

system. v) A high-speed cross-belt sorter at our distribution centre in Mihan, Nagpur, which is the first of its kind in India, and which has increased our sorting capacity in the distribution centre to approximately a million pieces per day. vi) A real-time data logging system that enables us to monitor temperature variations in our distribution centres and our reefer trucks used in our temperature-controlled logistics business.

How far have you been successful in implementing technology to effectually streamline your logistics services? FSC has been successful in modernizing supply chain and logistics by implementing global best practices in the Indian context. This has enabled the company to provide customized supply chain solutions and services reducing Time- to- Market™ and Cost- to- Market™ of customers. FSC has presence in three business segments – contract, express and temperature controlled logistics. The contract logistics business which provides warehousing, distribution and other value-added services, has 47 distribution centres and a customer location totaling upto 0.44 million sq. meter warehousing space. Under express logistics, FSC has 14 hubs and 107 branches across India, covering 11,235 pin codes. As part of the temperature controlled business, FSC provides cold-chain warehousing, transportation solutions and distribution of perishable products. We are predominately asset light company and engage vehicles from third parties for our contract and express logistics business. For our temperature controlled business, we own more than 140 specialized vehicles.

How does FSC minimizes the risk of cargo in transit and maximizes satisfaction of clients? What is your company’s core success philosophy? We always believe in selling solutions and not just products. Our tagline is ‘Science of Supply Chain – Delivered’. Our understanding of technology and the science of supply chain helps us study the business imperatives of customers and design customized supply chain solutions. We participate in RFPs (Request for Proposal), where request proposals are brought up for a particular project or program. Most of our

business comes through this route. We have always been keen to respond to the specific requirements and offering end-to-end supply chain solutions, with technology, innovation and constant upgradation driving our whole success philosophy.

In 2017, your company inaugurated India’s first cross belt sortation technology in Mihan, Nagpur. What is unique about this technology? Across all our business, Future Group anticipates significant growth in coming years and to enable this, we have made multiple investments in technology and automation. The Cross Belt Unit Sorter is the heart of the system having an incredible sorting capacity of a million units per day, to 400 destinations at a time using the 200 double decker chutes with accuracy over 99 per cent and requiring minimum human intervention (which is overthree times more productive than traditional, non-automated sortation). The case sorter has increased our sorting capacity at the distribution centre in Mihan to approximately 40,000 cases per day without having to increase physical storage. The sorters are connected to the various induction points in shelving and ground through a network of conveyors alongside a 12 meter high spiral conveyor which is the tallest in the country. This system can be easily integrated with any ERP/Applications and has the capability to sort products of other players in the retail industry.

What sort of dedicated practices and organisational values the company can expect under your leadership? I believe learning never stops. Even though I have been associated with the industry since so many years, I still continue to learn/ unlearn, refresh and renew my skills. This process in definitely continuous. We have inculcated this particular culture and value system in FSC. As an organisation, we have always ensured that our objectives are clear, understood by everyone from top to bottom, and that a high performance output is delivered, while keeping a nimble approach to our customers. And, whether in terms of infrastructure, technology or automation, our processes and systems are continuously innovating, helping us keep up with the demands and its fulfilment.

Cathay Pacific has become the first airline in Hong Kong to be awarded IATA CEIV Pharma Certification - a globally recognised pharmaceutical product handling accreditation. Anand Yedery, Regional Cargo Manager, SAMEA, Cathay Pacific Airways, in a conversation with Gaurav Dubey, talks about what this certification underlines as well as the emerging opportunities and challenges in the pharma handling business.

62 CargoConnect - april 2018

How are you making the most out of the tremendous growth of Pharma industry? In this growing market, Cathay Pacific is the one-stop shop for all pharma needs, right from planning to transportation. Operationally, we are able to provide the entire range of active containers, enabling us to offer our customers the best possible air-cargo solution to meet their needs. In India, we use the Environtainer and CSafe containers that provide state-of-the-art climate control solutions.

What steps you take to reduce various kinds of risks involved in transportation of pharma shipments? When it comes to handling pharma shipments, our sales offices are involved in shipment planning to ensure the most suitable flight plans. At the heart of the services is the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which all shipments must follow. The SOPs for pharma include priority handling, continuous monitoring of the temperature and voltage readings, and having a contingency plan of whether there should be any temperature or voltage excursions. Internal and external communication is important for everything involved with pre-approvals, shipment details and flight details. Other features are NOTOC (Notification To Captain) for compartment temperature requirements and re-icing or charging batteries at stations when necessary.

What advanced technology and work flow systems do you use to manage the standard of the company as well as to set up benchmarks for the industry? We are the number one e-AWB airline in the world and one of the first to introduce it in India. We now have a wider range of specialised products that caters to different market segments; we use technology and market intelligence much more effectively to identify commercial opportunities.

How Cathay Pacific has consolidated its position in the Indian aviation market? Cathay Pacific is the leading carrier from India to Hong Kong with 48 passenger flights and 25 freighters a week. We are not looking at any tie-up in India at the moment, since we service the cities of Mumbai,

Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata through our passenger aircraft and dedicated freighters. With that being said, partnerships are a crucial area. It’s important to find these strategic links because it gives us the ability to grow in a more controlled risk environment.

Operating in a region that will see the biggest growth in the industry brings increased impacts on the environment and communities. Comment on how has the journey been so far and what future strategies do you plan to use to stay consistent in the industry The expansion of our passenger network has enabled us to grow our cargo capacity substantially. There have been some important changes around the world in terms of market dynamics and technology. In India, over the years, our cargo capacity has grown as we have launched more passenger flights and freighters. Most recently we have upgraded our aircraft from Mumbai to Hong Kong from an A330 to a B777-300ER, resulting in a 67 per cent increase in cargo capacity out of Mumbai. We have nine specialised products that cater for different market segments. Our future strategies involve being responsive to what our customers want and understand who they are working with, because those requirements drive a lot of what we do. We will try relentlessly to lean our transactions, and see how we can help to make processes more straightforward.

Please share your views on the existing and anticipated challenges in the industry. Cargo is a complex business in terms of the many stakeholders – shippers, forwarders, agents, customs and many more. All these different functions need to talk to each other on a common platform to understand the movement of shipments. That is what our customers demand from us. And being able to get this in sync is a challenge. Safety and security is both a threat and an opportunity. We will continue our efforts in working with bodies like the BCAS, TSA and other security agencies to get it right. We are all for security and keen for this to be done in a productive way, making good business sense.

Logistics is a new ‘lifeline’ of country’s modern retail sector Landmark Group has been a dominant name in the retail sector from last several decades. Over the years, the organisation has witnessed a phenomenal growth and expanded its business across the globe. Dr Anil Chinnabhandar, Senior Vice President – SCM and Planning Landmark Group – Max Retail Division, who is spearheading one of the important retail divisions of the group, in an interview discusses the growing importance of logistics in the retail business. Here are the excerpts. - Gaurav Dubey How important is logistics for the overall scheme of your business? Logistics has become the backbone of the retail business. As per the current scenario, Indian consumers have started moving towards Omni channel and logistic activities have come on forefront.Logistics hitherto was mainly B2B centric but now it needs to be reoriented towards B2C. B2C requirements are highly sensitive and customers do not tolerate any delays or misses on the delivery commitments or on quality at all. Such delivery lapses may lead to higher product returns and it could even deprive the company from any future business opportunity too. Pressure also increases several folds on the cost of logistics as the B2C deliverables demand smaller parcels, more frequent and across larger geographies, limiting the logistics optimisation which was taken for granted so far. Therefore, logistics has now become the ‘lifeline’ of the modern retail sector in India.

H o w th e co m p a n y e n s u r e s smooth coordination between suppliers, transporters and other departments in the supply chain? At Landmark group India, we have

64 CargoConnect - april 2018

a seamless connection among our partners, be it at the inbound or on the outbound. All suppliers stay connected in real-time with orders, timelines, stock movements and payments etc. All outbound transactions are also online with transporters, warehouses, franchisee stores etc including a smart app on the delivery confirmation. There is a common data flow or triggers available for partners and the internal departments which make the decision process very smooth. This excellent coordination helps us to deliver the optimal performance.

How do you manage back-end supply? We manage back-end supplies with an absolute transparency among various internal stakeholders along with supply partners and transporters. Supplies are aligned to the front-end retail dynamics.

What percentage of your logistics work is outsourced? Majority of our logistics activities such as warehousing, Value Added Services (VAS), transportation, factory-gate pickups etc are all outsourced. Our own team of skeleton staff resides with the logistics partners to ensure optimal

usage of resources and required levels of services and quality.

Tell us about the most common problem faced by the company during its supply chain process? Unreliability of the ‘Turn-Around-Times (TAT)’ is the single largest challenge that we have been facing on an ongoing basis. Transport partners struggle to provide consistent, country-wide deliveries within the agreed timelines. Deliver-In-Full-On-Time (DIFOT) is a farfetched deliverable currently, which adversely affects the Retail business especially around season launches and festivities. We have been trying to work with some of the aggregators and constantly looking forward to work with geo-based, local experts who can deliver to us consistently and accurately.

Who are your Logistic Service Providers? Presently, we are using a couple of domestic LSPs, one in South and rest with another player. Geo based expertise is the main criteria for their selection. However, the search for a credible and strategic partner is an ongoing journey.

Coming of the age technology shaping up logistics industry India’s second-largest carmaker Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), reportedly sold 44,505 vehicles in the domestic market in February, 2018, up by 5.1 per cent, from 42,327 units sold in February, 2017. The carmaker exported 10,917 units in February, as against 10,407 units shipped out during the corresponding month last year. Prasad SVN, Sr. General Manager, Head, Production Planning & Control, Hyundai Motor India, gives a sneak peek into the IT enabled centralised supply chain system. - DEEPASHREE BANERJEE

How important is logistics for the overall scheme of your business? Strong logistics is at the centre of our business, it helps us provide seamless service to our customers in an increasingly competitive and complex marketplace. We believe that excellence in logistics gives us the edge over competition and allows us to fulfil our commitment to our customers which is one of our core values. Therefore, our logistic solutions are aligned to fulfil the customer’s needs.

How do you ensure smooth coordination between suppliers, transporters and other depar tments in your supply chain? We h ave a r obust pr o duct ion planning system at place where we plan our schedule six months prior to action. This plan is shared with our suppliers through an IT interface to enable them to plan their production schedules to match our requirements. We have developed a robust system in SAP which acts as a centralised system and captures all this data. The plans are revisited and adjusted after three months and then once again just a month before the actual production, where adjustments are made as per real time orders. The

66 CargoConnect - april 2018

plans are readjusted to ensure that we manufacture according to market demands. The in- built flexibility in our systems backed by the data from the SAP ensures that all stakeholders are in sync with each other, which helps meeting the fluctuating customer demands without compromising operational efficiency.

What percentage of your logistics wor k is out s ource d? W hat functions are performed by your logistics partners and what are controlled internally?

Are there any unique or innovative strategies that you have adopted for the better supply of your products?

Tell us about the most common problem faced by your company during its supply chain process. What steps do you take to overcome them?

We a re perhaps the on ly OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to exploit all available modes of transport - Road, Rail and Sea in our quest to reduce carbon footprint and reduce trailer congestion on highways. We pioneered the concept of shipping cars for domestic market through the coastal route. The first lot of 800 cars was shipped from Chennai port to Pipavav port in Gujarat. Currently, around 5 per cent of our cars for the domestic market are being transported through rail. HMIL has also introduced GPSe n able d t r ac k i n g of outb ou nd delivery trucks which helps dealers in maintaining delivery commitments. This extensive data is used to plan our logistics operations more efficiently.

HMIL has been successfully able to achieve a fine balance between maintaining minimum inventor y while servicing customer demand in a dynamic market. We have been able to do this through our afore mentioned SAP system which ensures that our parts are delivered Just in Sequence (JIS).

Overall planning and co- ordination is handled by our internal logistics team who look into material procurement planning, expediting and warehousing.

How do you manage your supply chain during peak times such as festivals and promotional sales? O ur i n-house pl a n n i ng system generates six-month forecast for mater ia l requi rement pla n n i ng (MRP). Pin-point generation of bill of material and weekly order cycle helps in reducing the order to delivery time. This flexibility ensures a fairly smooth supply chain during peak seasons.

WCS 2018 focused on four future priorities

IATA goes digital to combat dangerous goods handling

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has placed its bet on four priorities- accelerating the digitisation of the supply chain, enforcing regulations for lithium batteries, more efficient trade facilitation and developing the next generation of air cargo leaders, for the future success of the air cargo industry-. This was discussed at the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) that took place in Dallas from 13-15 March. “Air cargo had an exceptional year in 2017 with 9 percent growth. And we expect a very healthy 4.5 percent expansion of demand in 2018. There are great opportunities in e-commerce and the movement of time-and-temperature sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals. But we must accelerate the modernisation of processes, enforce regulations for the safe transport of lithium batteries and improve the efficiency of trade facilitation. The air cargo industry has agreed to focus on these key areas and we must follow through,” said Glyn Hughes, IATA’s global head of cargo. The industry has been pursuing a digital process transformation known as e-freight for over a decade. A key element of e-freight is the market adoption of the e-air waybill (eAWB). Global penetration has nearly reached 53 percent and the industry is targeting 68 percent by year-end on enabled trade lanes.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has taken a significant step forward in the digitalization of the dangerous goods supply chain following the adoption of the e-Dangerous Goods Declaration (e-DGD) standards. An electronic approach to manage the IATA Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD), the e-DGD will help in leveraging industry initiatives to digitalize data and embrace data sharing platform principles. This aligns with and supports industry initiatives to modernize air cargo processes efficiently and share critical data among stakeholders that need it. Implementing the e-DGD requires cooperation between all stakeholders, including shippers, forwarders, carriers, ground handling agents and third party providers. The benefits of implementing the e-DGD with clearly defined data governance include improved transparency, traceability and data quality. This, in turn, will improve process efficiency and reduce errors and delays.

Amendments in e-way bill to tackle supply-chain issues Amendments in the e-way bill by the government recently will significantly address concerns of e-commerce logistics, courier and cargo companies, a report said today. The revised draft policy on the generation of e-way bills released by the Central Board of Excise and Customs on March 7, according to rating agency ICRA, will benefit small businesses that operate on intra-state basis and the less than truckload (LTL) operators.

As per the revised norms, e-way bill generation will not be required for each consignment in case of intra-state movement of goods through e-commerce or courier companies where the value of each consignment is less than Rs 50,000 but the aggregate value is greater than Rs 50,000, explained Subrata Ray, senior group vice president, ICRA. Further, the revised policy has also extended the relaxation on the requirement of updating vehicle details for intra-state movement to 50 km from 10 km earlier. It may be noted that the road transport industry had raised several concerns about the earlier draft e-way bill policy, especially regarding generation of bills. This was expected to put a significant compliance burden on the road transport sector, especially courier, e-commerce logistics and LTL operators. The Government has now addressed some of these concerns in the revised draft policy for e-way bills.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is going to launch a pilot project under ‘Pay As You Use’ tolling on the Delhi-Mumbai national highway to study and implement the ability of the system in the country. The project involves implementing a satellite based electronic toll collection system running on GPS/GSM technology for around 500 commercial vehicles on the Delhi Mumbai national highway for one year. The proposed tolling system will work on a combination of mobile telecommunications technology (GSM) and satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS). It will be able to deduct money from vehicle account, credit money to the concessionaire within one day and open the toll gate. In case of a failed transaction it will be able to alert the toll operator to collect payments manually and not open the gate. The project will look at ways to integrate the new solution with the existing pre-paid wallet account offered by NHAI under the FASTag program. It will also draw a comparison between distance based tolling and the existing tolling system, as also virtual tolling Vs normal tolling.

How vehicles will stay on govt’s radar on highways, and on GST e-way bill

The government has proposed to link the unique number embedded in FASTags with the e-way bill generated by the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) to effectively prevent chances of vehicles transporting goods to places other than those declared. FASTag employs radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to enable electronic payment at tolls on national highways which provides a unique numbers for any vehicle, ensuring that they can be tracked

Truck rentals up 9% in India Truck rentals on the trunk routes saw an increase of 9 per cent in January and February 2018 on the back of a massive diversion of trucks towards infrastructure projects, increases in diesel price, an uptick in manufacturing activity and stronger movement of various agri products across the country. According to a leading daily, the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training pointed out that part of the increase in rentals has been due to an increase in diesel prices over the last few weeks. In addition to this, domestic tyre manufacturers jacked up truck tyre prices, capitalising on the increase in import duty on tyres imported from China. This foundation also stated that the unprecedented discounts (ranging between 12 per cent and 20 per cent) offered by truck dealers, coupled with improved business activities, had created demand for high tonnage capacity trucks.

at over 400 toll plazas located on the national highways network. An official said, “In the e-way bill generated by GSTN, transporters have to declare the origin, destination, time at which vehicle has to depart, and the number of days it will take to reach its destination, among other particulars. Moreover, if the vehicle is stuck midway for some reason, an application for extension of time can also be expected in advance. Also, if the transporter asks for an extension of dates in the e-way bill, the data can be cross-checked.” The government has already mandated that all vehicles with four or more wheels — including trucks and buses — sold from December 1, 2017, have to be fitted with FASTags or RFID tags. These tags store data such as vehicle registration and class of vehicle, which help perceive the exact toll to be charged. Indian Railways set for big transformation From safety and punctuality to speed and competitive efficiency, Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways is working on multiple projects that are expected to start showing results in the next few years. Energy efficient locomotives that can achieve relatively higher speeds and throughput are crucial to India that is growing fast and hopes to retain the tag of world’s fastest growing major economy. “These world-class locomotives that Indian Railways is looking to induct will be able to haul greater tones of freight and will also allow for greater acceleration and deceleration at shorter distances. What’s best about these locomotives is that they are all ‘Make in India’ projects,” says Abhaya Agarwal, Partner Infrastructure & PPP Leader at EY India. In Varanasi, PM Narendra Modi’s constituency, Indian Railways created a world record by converting a diesel loco into electric traction. Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) converted one unit of a WAGC3-class diesel locomotive in a record time of 69 days. Alstom, which is manufacturing 12,000 HP locomotives at its new factory in Bihar’s Madhepura, recently handed over the new locomotive to Indian Railways. The WAG12-class ‘Make in India’ locomotive is part of an order for 800 fully electric locomotives that will eventually be used on the Dedicated Freight Corridors.

DG AutoCheck to enhance safety in dangerous goods

Truck terminal, information centre opens at Tuticorin

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a new online air cargo tool Dangerous Goods AutoCheck (DG AutoCheck), to assist airlines, handlers, third-party logistics providers and shippers to comply with dangerous goods requirements. DG AutoCheck is a digital solution that allows the air cargo supply chain to check the compliance of the Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) against all relevant rules and regulations contained in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. In addition, DG AutoCheck allows ground handlers to accept or reject a shipment during physical inspections by providing a “pictorial representation” of the package with the marking and labelling required for air transport. The tool enables electronic consignment data to be received directly, which supports the digitisation of the cargo supply chain. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology also transforms a paper DGD into electronic data. This data is then processed and verified automatically using the XML data version of the DGR.

Union Minister for Shipping, Nitin Gadkari recently inaugurated a truck parking terminal at the VO Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin, under the ambitious Sagarmala Project, with Minister of State for Finance and Shipping P Radhakrishnan also present on the occasion. Built at a cost of `23.69 crore, the terminal can handle up to 200 trucks. Gadkari also inaugurated a Port Information Centre. Built at a cost of `1.89 crore, the Information Centre has 60 LED panels depicting the evolution and growth of the port. It has touch screen kiosk systems containing in-depth information on Seaports, Shipping, Indian Ports, Exim Trade, Photo gallery and Video gallery. Gadkari said, “The National Highway linking the port to mainland will be widened to a 6 lane road to ease congestion. Tuticorin to Madurai road construction will also start soon. I am hopeful that the Truck Parking Terminal will provide resting facilities for truck drivers, resulting in lesser number of accidents.”

CMA CGM introduces drop-off empty containers facility at ICD Birgunj

State-owned AAI has chosen three airports, including Varanasi and Vijayawada, to implement biometric access system for passenger boarding process, a senior official said. BMCT enhances Nhava Sheva Connectivity with first barge and train volumes Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCT) continued to improve connectivity and ease of doing business for JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) users with its first barge and train volumes recently. A 90-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) block train departed for Mandideep on March 13, 2018, while a second train left for Nagpur on March 16. Both trains were operated by Container Corporation of India (Concor). On March 18, there were both barge and rail movements as Shahi Shipping’s ‘Royal Hugli’ barge loaded 75 TEUs at BMCT for the short marine transit to Mumbai Port Trust; while an export train operated by Concor arrived from Boisar, carrying containers for other terminals in JNPT. Containers for other JNPT terminals arriving by rail at BMCT will be trucked less than 4 km via JNPT’s South Gate, to connect with export vessels berthed at those terminals.

BMCT’s rail yard is equipped with four twin lift-capable Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes serving three lines. It will be the only terminal in JNPT capable of handling 1.5 km-long, 360TEU Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) trains when the DFC is completed. The rail capacity at BMCT’s railyard will be doubled by the end of 2022 with the completion of BMCT’s Phase 2, adding four more RMGs and three more lines to become the largest railyard in a container terminal in India. Suresh Amirapu, CEO, BMCT said, “The company is enhancing options for port users. Our state-of-the-art equipment will provide train operators a faster turnaround: we target 35 percent of BMCT volumes by rail once the DFC gets complete. Similarly, unrivalled space and flexibility means BMCT is well equipped to seamlessly handle barge volumes and provide that option to cargo owners.

“BMCT is working with all stakeholders to improve connectivity via increased rail and barge utilisation; the handling of a train carrying containers for other terminals at JNPT today and the barge call is testament to that. We look forward to continue working closely with all stakeholders for the benefit of JNPT users,” concludes Amirapu.

PEOPLECONNECT

CommitmentA key to Excellence

His strong desire to have a comprehensive and integrated knowledge of the concept of logistics brought him in close association with the Indian logistics industry where he has been serving for the last 23 years. GN Gururaj, General Manager - Imports, Sindhu Cargo Services Ltd, in an exclusive conversation with Upamanyu Borah, talks about his journey in the industry from a small manufacturing company to the role of a General Manager, with also sharing his values and principles, experiences in the industry and challenges he has faced so far. Excerpts!

1

2

Tell us about your journey so far. I started my career with a manufacturing company in the materials and logistics department. It has been a long journey of about 23 years. Being an outsider with counterculture ideas of how transportation should fit within an enterprise, I was quite curious to learn and understand the intricacies involved with the logistics industry. This inquisitiveness made me enter the logistics industry where I am serving for the past 12 years. How has the industry changed from the time you stepped in? Tr a n s for m a t io n s h av e b e e n tremendous. From manual processing of documents, the i ndustr y has changed a lot in adopting technology

and rapidly moving towards paperless transactions. Well qualified manpower is making a headway into the industry which otherwise was considered a low profile job. Industry is adopting modern techniques for quality output and there has been huge relaxation in government regulations.

3

4

The biggest challenge faced In this industry, we have to face many different challenges every day and never are you done with it. However, managing manpower is a real challenge considering the attrition rate in the industry and the dearth of quality man power. Your success Mantra? Your Guru in this business? I believe in one simple manner of life and that is to ‘live by commitment’. In other words, commit what you can

deliver and ensure the same is done. Ta l k i ng about Gur u, I would attribute the qualities to Mr Balaraju, our Managing Director. He has brought me to this filed and empowered me to step up the ladder.

5 6

Apart from work, what are your other interests and hobbies? Besides work, playing cricket and swimming are two of my favourite past time that I naturally had an affinity with. I also love visiting places. Any message you would like to give to those who aspire to work in this industry? Mainly three things - 1. Acquiring knowledge 2. Owning responsibility 3. Seriousness on commitments, which will help one emerge as a team player.
