It is with great delight that we launch our first edition of The Crew Review. In its carefully curated pages you’ll get to know our vision of The Modern Uniform – a philosophy dedicated to the transformative power of staff uniforms. The stories we’ve curated showcase the diverse crews we love to dress everyday, from global brands to leading retailers and game changing restauranteurs. We are also excited to show off our new design releases and highlight the variety offered within our ever-expanding range. Cargo Crew has flourished since we created our first range of Denim Aprons back in 2012. Prior to this our offering existed as a bespoke service, custom making uniforms for a diverse stable of clientele. This experience combined with my fashion design background led to the launch of Cargo Crew. Our mission at Cargo Crew is to provide contemporary, fashion-focused apparel that’s affordable and easily procured. Our offering is industry direct and we are proud to produce retail quality garments that are sold at wholesale, direct to our clients.
Original design is what drives us here at Cargo Crew and we are passionate about creating uniforms that staff want to wear. We are detail obsessed and love what we create. We develop fabrics and designs fit for work that not only look great but provide comfort and performance. Our offering of ‘The Modern Uniform’ is a considered collection which continues to evolve. There are streamlined looks to ensure uniformity and consistency yet enough diversity within our range to allow individual expression. At Cargo Crew we are mad about client service and strive for 100% client satisfaction. We believe real service is not only about offering a great product but also about opening the doors to real partnership with our customers. We know you’ll love our first edition of The Crew Review. As always, let us know what you think!
TALK TO US Our Style Advisors are on hand to curate the ideal uniform wardrobe for your business. We’re also here to offer dedicated customer service Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

CRAFT YOUR LOOK
MATCH YOUR COLOUR PALETTE
STYLE THAT FITS
It is said that ‘first, we eat with our eyes’. Just as fitout and plating play an enormous role in creating your customer experience, so too are uniforms a visual extension of your brand. A considered curation of colour, texture and cut combine to tell your story. Like breezy, neutral toned linen fabrics for a coastal bistro, relaxed denim for an urban café, or tailored shirts with dapper braces for a classic cocktail bar.
Building a uniform wardrobe that complements the colour palette of your fitout is key. If your venue interior features neutral earthy tones, our Neutral Palette collection will enhance your visual storytelling with the Henry apron in mocha or pebble. Or for an industrial environment, our Double Denim collection of deep indigos and faded denim talks to an edgy interior.
Along with brand story, focus on a uniform range that suits your staff. While a carefully styled uniform wardrobe provides visual impact, it can also positively influence staff morale. Here, garment cut and fit is key. That’s why you’ll find Cargo Crew aprons are purposely designed as ‘one size fits all’ to flatter all shapes and sizes. When your staff feel well-dressed and comfortable in their uniforms their confidence is likely to increase, which flows through to their customer service.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Estelle Bistro Serious Dining in Melbourne’s north. Boasting One Hat in The Age Good Food Guide and ranked as one of Australia’s top 100 restaurants in the coveted AFR awards, Estelle offers serious dining in Melbourne’s North. At its helm is acclaimed chef Scott Pickett who also recently launched ESP, his degustation-only venue next door. With its growing reputation in fine-dining circles, Estelle briefed us to style a new uniform look for their wait staff that’s refined and consistent with their brand. To bring it all together we designed a look that was classic while playing into the experimental nature of Scott’s menu. The result is a wardrobe that centres on our black denim Barkly bib apron, embroidered with Estelle’s signature ‘E’ brand mark in black. This black-on-black feature adds subtle detail and understated class. The Estelle team style their apron with our tailored black and white Max check shirt, or our Piper striped shirt.
Warm Chocolate Tortes Recipe from Scott Pickett: A Cook’s Story
This recipe taught me about using chocolate and beaten egg whites properly. These are a kind of fudgy pudding, or a set soufflé. The mixture can be cooked in eight individual soufflé dishes and unmoulded before serving. The little tortes can keep for a few days, covered in the refrigerator, and reheated in a microwave or oven.
— 160 g dark chocolate
— 45 g plain flour
Put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan over simmering water, to melt.
— 135 g butter
— Caster sugar
— 4 large eggs, separated
— Icing sugar
Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until light, fold in the flour. Whisk the egg whites until they form firm peaks. Quickly add the melted chocolate to the egg yolk mixture and stir thoroughly. Fold in the egg whites.
— 150 g sugar
Spoon into buttered soufflé moulds dusted with caster sugar. Bake at 180°C for 20 minutes. Allow to cool slightly when cooked, then unmould. Dust with icing sugar before serving. Serve with cream, or a coffee crème anglaise. Serves 8.

Neutral Palette
Double Denim
Neutral Palette uniform looks pair pure colours and organic textures to create a relaxed yet striking look. Choose apron styles in a soft colour palette of cream, mocha or pebble and finish the look with ‘mix it up’ cream herringbone straps. Other pieces embracing the neutral tones include our sulphur denim completed with genuine leather trims. Wear this with a sky blue oxford shirt for total understated style.
Our Double Denim uniform edit celebrates this fashion staple in all its glory. With our wide range of denim pieces, it’s easy to mix and match shades to create the perfect all-over denim look. Our Double Denim shirts and aprons work perfectly in any environment, from hole-in-the wall cafes, to inner city wine bars.

LOOK 4
Striking Stripes From black and white to navy and royal there is a multitude of ways for our Striking Stripes to be your chosen uniform look. Our Riveria stripes offer a modern take on a classic look that will add sophistication to any uniform selection. Worn as a hero on their own or paired with a apron of your choice, our stripe styles will add the perfect contemporary twist.
LOOK 5
LOOK 6
Military Edge
Original Plaid
Military styling combines tailored uniform pieces in an army-inspired colour palette. Dry, earthy tones of green such as olive and khaki set the mood for this look, with metal hardware adding the finishing touches. The Military style is versatile and can be dressed-up with a tailored shirt and leather tie, or paired back with a classic t-shirt. Choose the Tokyo khaki apron for a solid military look or add a subtle touch of army with olive green mix it up straps.
Plaid is an age-old pattern that injects colour and style into your uniform wardrobe. At Cargo Crew we combine original colour palettes to create a fresh take on this classic look, like our dapper Watson check vest in a fresh combination of grey, red and black. Let plaid be the hero when styling your look by pairing it back with a solid coloured shirt, black pants or jeans.
LOOK 8
A Simple Statement
LOOK 7
Modern Classics
Our selection of solid black aprons will set any uniform selection apart. With high quality hardware and precision detailing a worthy black basic will speak volumes. Teamed with a check or simple white shirt, a simple statement is never a bad choice.
Our Modern Classic edit is a contemporary take on the old favourites - think patterns of checks, spots and stripes paired with solid hues of black, white and navy. The Modern Classic look is one that will never go out of style and flourishes in a variety of hospitality environments.

THE CREW REVIEW
ART SERIES HOTEL GROUP
THE HOTELIER The Art Series Hotel Group offers a unique guest experience at each of their 6 boutique hotels across Australia. Inspired by and dedicated to Australian contemporary artists, each Art Series hotel takes design inspiration from their namesake artist – such as The Cullen (Adam Cullen), The Schaller Studio (Mark Schaller) and The Larwill Studio (David Larwill). We work closely with the crew at Art Series Hotel Group to create bespoke uniform styling that dovetails with the signature look of each hotel.
Pictured: The Larwill Studio crew are dressed in a bright and contemporary uniform to complement the artwork of artist David Larwill. Madeline and Michael from The Larwill wear our Bailey denim shirt and Henry bib apron in charcoal.
Q&A with
Camilla Speer Senior Marketing & Partnerships Executive, Art Series Hotel Group
How did art and design become core components of the Art Series experience?
Through which other sensory experiences does Art Series reveal its brand values?
Our parent company had always had a long standing relationship with each of the artists and had wanted to collaborate with them when they first wanted to build boutique hotels. Each location was assigned an artist based off their body of work, personality and fit within the community the hotel would be residing in. It has been a great privilege to work closely with some of Australia’s most celebrated artists to bring the project to life and see guests experience art in such an immersive way.
We try to infuse the personality of the artist throughout the hotel – we have quotes on the pillowcases at The Larwill Studio, mirrored bunnies peeping around corridor corners at The Blackman, and street art in the car park at The Cullen. At our Studio hotels – The Larwill Studio and The Schaller Studio – we encourage guests to embrace their creative side by providing them with art utensils in the communal areas to paint a canvas or sketch away in a book. We also have 35 Smart cars wrapped in the artists work between the 6 hotels which guests can hire for the hour or day and head out to discover all that Melbourne has to offer.
Is it important that each Art Series Hotel has its own narrative? Each of our six hotels are completely unique as they are inspired by and dedicated to Australia’s most contemporary artists. They each have their own brand essence – from the colour palette, to the wording on the ‘do not disturb’ sign to how the staff are dressed. As our four hotels in Melbourne are all in close proximity we needed to make sure they have their own identities. No cookie cutter approaches were taken.
Art Series Hotels are a feast for the eyes. What impact does the abundance of art and design have on guests? Staying at one of the Art Series Hotels is often a welcome change for our guests. They are completely immersed in the namesake artist’s work and are given the opportunity to get up close and personal with them – from a personal tour with our art curator, to a dedicated in room art channel, to even purchasing one of the artists prints (or originals as we have in each room at The Schaller Studio) A lot of guests check in thinking they are just there for ‘bed and breakfast’ and end up discovering a real Australian icon.
CARGOCREW.COM.AU
How does staff presentation (uniforms) play a role in telling the Art Series story? Last year we introduced our Studio brand which has a completely different feel to our original set of hotels which are more of a finished product – a gallery. We wanted to have a more rustic, casual atmosphere in the Studios and this is when we first approached Cargo Crew – we loved their denim aprons which almost felt like an artist smock. Whilst our 5 star properties have a more sleek corporate look, we love the Chambray shirts at our Studios which really represents the atmosphere we’re going for. The casual looks also really suits the staff we employ and they love wearing them. We also use the gingham shirts in our restaurant Spoonbill at The Olsen Hotel which focuses on farm to plate seasonal dining.

The modern uniform reinterprets what a uniform should be by offering a signature ‘uniform wardrobe’ that staff can make their own. A uniform does not need to exist in its literal sense, meaning it’s the same or identical. The modern uniform has evolved to become a suite of options, which work together to form a cohesive look. It’s about offering a range of fashion staples that can be mixed and matched to suit individual taste. Gone are the restrictions of yesterday. This is the uniform contemporary corporates want to wear.

Hoyts Cinema is a leading entertainment complex which owns and operates 43 cinemas across Australia and New Zealand.
