WELCOME

Words from Our Directors “Do it first, do it well and be proud of what we deliver” Off the back of winning Telstra’s Australia Small Business of the Year Award, 2016 has truly been an exciting year for Cargo Crew. As our range continues to grow and diversify, we’re honoured to be dressing an even more varied client base, which spans not just multiple industries but geographical locations too. At Cargo Crew we work hard to keep our clients crews looking their best. We continue to lead our industry and remain focused on creating original product that leads the way in the uniform market. Our key mission is to continue to push the boundaries in what we offer our clients through superior design, quality and innovation. We take pride in being unique and we know that our crews worldwide know the real deal when they see it. The days are jam packed at Cargo Crew. Never a team to rest on our laurels, we’re constantly evolving our current collection whilst also moving full steam on new products that keep us ahead of the pack. In turn, our committed design-led approach keeps our clients ahead of their own competition.

Our most recent focus has included a 12 month improvement program re-developing our famous Henry Apron fabrication. Updates to the production of the Henry Apron push the quality and performance to higher levels which our crews will find exceptional. In addition to this we have launched Cargo Crew Your Way which is all about offering our clients more choice in customising their uniforms. The hero of Your Way is our in-house embroidery service that delivers an end to end customisation service to our clients. Other news from Cargo Crew HQ includes our continued growth in the international market which saw us being selected by Claus Meyer to dress his US venue at Grand Central Terminal and not to mention being hand picked by Goop to supply aprons for their skincare line launch. We like to think we share the same goals as the industry leaders we’re privileged to outfit, which is why our philosophy is “Do it first, do it well and be proud of what we deliver”.

THE CREW REVIEW

WORKERS COLLECTION

The Cargo Crew Workers Collection is all about delivering authentic design-led styles that are fit for work. The roots of the collection stem from uniforms worn by yesteryear’s working heroes, a time when sturdy work wear got the job done. The foundation of our collection is a capsule range built on authentic cuts in honest fabrics that just keep going. To do this, we’ve sourced genuine indigo denim from one of Asia’s leading denim manufacturers, trusted by the world’s benchmark denim labels.

“The Workers Collection introduces a new offering to our wider range, including Aprons and a Vest unlike anything we’ve ever done.” Felicity Rodgers, Creative Director

The story starts with our Workers Vest, which takes inspiration from chore vests worn by farmers, craftsmen, and railway workers since the late 1800s. Durability and practicality was key for hardworking folk, and these are the chief characteristics you’ll find built into our Vest today. To add fortitude to any task, hardwearing denim provides cover from messy tasks while adding warmth in a layered uniform ensemble. With deep pockets a-plenty, our Vest offers room for all the tools of the trade yet it’s not all work and no play, as the use of a classic-cut Workers Vest adds instant street cred to any uniform wardrobe. Complementing the hard-working ethos of our Vest are the versatile Workers Aprons in washed Indigo Denim. Available in both Bib and Waist versions, the Workers Aprons are detailed with sturdy statement pockets and finished with genuine rope apron straps. Shop the Workers Collection online or instore at our Brunswick East showroom.

THE CREW REVIEW

Your Way Kiosk

Our Melbourne based clients are invited to visit the Cargo Crew Your Way kiosk stationed within our Brunswick East showroom. Here we have the full offering on display, ideal for exploring all the uniform personalisation options. This is also where our embroidery work takes place, so come and have a look if you’re curious about the process.

YOUR WAY

Embroider it

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread and is an ideal way to showcase your logo on your uniform with a premium finish. Embroidery is also the perfect decoration method to add a monogram or tagline on your uniform shirt, polo tee, apron or vest.

Personalise it

Just when we didn't think it was possible to make our range any more unique we went ahead and launched a service that lets you personalise your uniforms! Let your customers know exactly who your staff are with our monogrammed uniforms and personal name embroidery options.

An enamel pin is a small metal pin worn on clothing, often the lapel of a jacket, or the chest area of an apron. Enamel pins can be ornamental or can indicate your affiliation with an organisation or cause — the cause being caffeine, perhaps?

CARGOCREW.COM.AU

Patch it

The creation of embroidered patches first began in China in the 3rd–5th century BC. Tailors would use various sewing techniques to mend, patch and alter cloths, which led to sewing decorative designs in them. Today, decorated patches can be used to make a creative statement, or honour craftsmanship and skill level.

Badge it

Badges are an easy and convenient way to add a touch of personality to your staff uniform. Our range of super fun custom button badges will become a stand out feature of your crew's apparel, and are the perfect uniform accessory to Cargo Crew tees, shirts, aprons & tote bags.

ST YLING

STYLE GUIDES THAT WORK

How to pair a shirt & tie Just how do those impossibly stylish types always stand out in a simple shirt and tie? The secret to their sartorial prowess is finding the perfect match — a curation of shirt and tie so on point that one can’t help but take a second look. The same goes for dressing on the job. A poised selection of uniform tie and shirt makes a resounding impression. And who wouldn’t want to look their best at work? Your crew’s uniform speaks volumes after all. Best to ensure a positive statement. To master the powerful styling technique of shirt and tie pairing, master three golden rules. Just remember, some rules are meant to be broken.

PATTERN PERFECTION

TEXTURAL COLOUR

CLASSIC COMBOS

Play with pattern to create an energetic work wardrobe that broadcasts confidence and personality. For a classic contrast that places pattern centre stage, we pair our Frankie Check Shirt with a simple City Skinny Tie in Black or Bond Matte Silk Slim Bow Tie in Black. We also reverse the concept with our new arrival, the Rex Utility Shirt in Charcoal paired with the Max Check Bow Tie. Or step your pattern game up a notch with a Smith Oxford Shirt in Sky Blue and our stand out Pin Spot Bow Tie. Don’t be afraid to let your crew lead the way with this stylish play on patterned shirt and tie pairings. Our wide range of plain, and large and small patterned shirts, can easily be styled in this manner for both men and women, with tailored cuts available for each.

By choosing a contrasting colour and texture you instantly lift your shirt and tie look to one that signals confidence and originality. Our new Baby Blue and Pale Pink Ascot Bow Ties are made of a luxe linen blend and offer the perfect tonal and textural contrast against our cotton blend Navy and Sky Blue Smith Oxford Shirts or our Black & White Stripe Dixon Shirt. Another approach to maximise your shirt and tie game: match our Max Check Shirt with a Tan Leather Bow Tie — the epitome of the modern uniform.

The long and short of matching your shirt and tie is, when in doubt, go back to the classics. That being a tried and tested black and white combination, but updated with a modern uniform twist. Like our new Bond Matte Silk Slim Bow Tie or City Skinny Tie, paired with our stylish Rex Utility Shirt in Charcoal. This subtle black and grey contrast is a new take on an old monochrome favourite. For another iconic pairing, go for tonal layering in cool blue hues. You can be assured your crew will strike the right note when they take to the floor in our Sky Blue Smith Oxford Shirt with the stylish Bond Matte Silk Lavalliere Bow Tie in Black or Pin Spot Bow Tie in Ink.

Rex Utility Our super smart Rex Utility Shirt is the essential uniform. Made from premium 100% cotton chambray this shirt is the perfect balance of statement style with a relaxed tone that will make any crew fit for work.

Bow Tie in Black & White

Bond Matte Silk Slim Bow Tie in Black

Pinspot Bow Tie in Ink & White

Ascot Bow Tie in Pale Pink

Smith Oxford Our Smith Oxford is a classic staple with a contemporary twist. The lightweight fabric ensures comfort for the wearer whilst the understated style works perfectly for any modern uniform.

CARGO CREW

The Cargo Crew TREND REPORT

Design runs through our veins at Cargo Crew. In fact, our obsession with original design and product creation is what sets us apart in our market. The key to our success is keeping our product range contemporary and relevant. We do that by developing fashion focused uniforms that reflect both industry and lifestyle trends, yet deliver a commercial product our crews can put to work each day. Being first in responding to emerging trends is what we do. To gain an insight into the thinking behind our current work, take a look at some of the key movements we’ve identified as being relevant to our world.

The new corporate dress code The days of needing to don a suit nine-to-five have had a thorough shake up, with an HR-approved movement to relax dress codes sweeping corporate Australia. Whilst the change of pace doesn’t signal free reign to trade trousers for jeans, it does place more choice in the hands of the individual to make dressing choices that best reflect their style and needs. Firm rules or not, modern wardrobe decisions should still be well considered. We see this topic addressed in business publications and professional advice columns daily. Take Business Insider Australia, who recommend strategic ‘power dressing’ even in 2016; “The way you dress really does make a difference to your career, how much you earn and how people treat you. The science on this proves it”.

Redefining corporate Australia’s dress code

Our own response to this development has been the introduction of our casual corporate collection. Filling the gap between suits and jeans are our chino styles. Available in neatly tailored pants and skirts, these signal polished professionalism combined with approachability. Co-ordinated with Cargo Crew's Smith Oxford Shirts, Gingham Check Shirts and selected pieces in classic black and white, our contribution to the new, unofficial business dress code, is a modern corporate wardrobe at its best.

Denim Dominates Thank goodness for denim! As far as we’re concerned denim will never go out of style. Denim is our quintessential muse and we love working with and exploring its many different forms. Perhaps it's denim’s heritage that connects so well with the Cargo Crew design language. With a history heavily steeped in durable hardwearing work wear, denim is the perfect combination of function and style. As denim continues to dominate the runway and be at the forefront of retail, we embrace the appeal of denim with our wide range of original denim aprons, denim shirts and the latest addition to our collection, the denim Workers Collection! Here are just a few of our denim highlights this season:

−− Double denim is still a thing, and a look we love here at Cargo Crew. −− Distressed denim has evolved. Hand distressing combined with mastered washing techniques translate to the relaxed yet considered look our crews adore the world over. −− Authentic indigo denim has made a comeback. Our innovative new Workers Collection celebrates the fabric, skilfully washed back to reveal pure denim beauty.

TREND REPORT

“ ... black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony."

Back to Black (and White) Black has been our best friend for so many years and is known as the go-to colour in most work wardrobes. White is known as a harmonious staple that provides an obvious sense of minimalism. Partnered together, black and white are heroes of the “less is more” approach, lending instant, understated style that never dates.

– Coco Chanel, Chanel

As simple chic dominates the runway, the sleek and sophisticated appeal of black and white stands strong at Cargo Crew with the release of our new Campbell Shirt collection. Offering an elegant twist on a classic silhouette, the Campbell is detailed with signature pockets, sleeve tabs that combines high-end design with the fit and function we’re known for.

Utilitarian Style Like many fashion enthusiasts we love the polished confidence that comes with modern utilitarian looks. On the catwalk we’ve seen the influence of militarystyle themes reimagined once again into a new, sleeker silhouette, with paired back detailing and deconstructed contours. Whilst utilitarian fashion as a trend is nothing new, its latest incarnation has taken the look in a more sophisticated direction, yet continues to celebrate functionality and utility. Naturally, this ethos fits perfectly into the Cargo Crew approach, as seen in key pieces in our latest collection. Our new range of Rex Utility Shirts are our Sergeants of style, channeling the best of understated utilitarian chic into a modern uniform classic. We see our stylish utility shirts working seamlessly across multiple industries including hospitality, resort, retail and contemporary corporate.

WHAT'S YOUR POUR? Australia's top thirst quenchers lift the lid on their top drops

What are you pouring? Colombian Hot Chocolate. It's a very traditional drink in Colombia, my home country. Colombian Hot Chocolate needs to be ordered with cheese inside... it's the tradition!

What are you wearing? Carolina Talero, Owner Sonido!

A crazy melting eggs blouse from Savers in Brunswick protected by a beautiful denim apron by Cargo Crew. It's denim so it's safe and cool at the same time.

Do customers notice what you’re wearing? Always. Our only uniform is the apron. Everyone wears it. Owner, barista, cook, dishy‌ everyone! Under the aprons everyone is free to wear whatever they want.

Do customers have questions about your pour? Yes, lots of questions about our Colombian drinks, especially our juices. We make them with fruits Australians haven't even heard of, like Lulo and Guanabana. They love them.

Scott Gauld, Distillery & Operations Manager and the Four Pillars Crew

What are you pouring? Four Pillars Gin! We recently launched a limited edition gin called Cousin Vera’s Gin which we made in collaboration with a Spanish distillery in Madrid. Customers are loving it!

What are you wearing? Our aprons are our uniformity in the cellar door. Other than that we don’t really have a set uniform — just a nice collared shirt and dark jeans.

Do customers notice what you’re wearing? Customers really love the aprons. We are going to start retailing them very soon — we are constantly getting people asking to buy them.

What’s the biggest change you’ve witnessed in the industry? We are in the business of educating people at the moment. I love the opportunity of trying to sell gin to someone who tells you that they hate gin. 90% of the time they will walk away with a bottle of gin!

What are you pouring?

What are you pouring?

We had our Ladies who Shoot their Lunch Shiraz with wildshot venison fillet last night. The perfect autumn/winter combo!

Just pouring out a filter of the Colombian La Primavera. It’s delish!

What would make, or break, your pour?

What would make, or break, your pour?

Cork. There’s just nothing worse than a wine being destroyed by a dodgy cork.

Steaming milk that has lost texture would break my pour. You know it as soon as the milk hits the espresso and you have to start all over again.

What excites you about your craft right now?

What are you wearing?

The cooler climate expressions of Victorian Shiraz. The renaissance of Shiraz in Australia is akin to the introduction of smart phone technology — you can still phone your friends like before, but the experience is wildly different — for the better. It’s never been a better time to try Victorian Shiraz.

A simple oxford button down shirt and the Marine Cargo Crew Tokyo Bib Apron. This light canvas number is great because it’s nice and breathable, perfect for a busy café.

Can you pick the ‘next big thing’ in hospitality?

What are you wearing?

Automation is becoming a big thing in the coffee industry, from coffee machines with precision built-in scales to automated pour-over machines. It’s all about becoming more consistent and repeatable, giving us a tasty cup no matter who’s behind the counter.

Our team wears a simple Cargo Crew Gingham Shirt— classic and 'farmy', authentic for our setting. It’s comfortable, casual and hides spills well! Great uniforms enhance the customer experience by creating a mood. It’s all in the detail.

Jacqueline Forth, Glow Business & Product Innovator and the Pure Glow Crew

What are you pouring? Cold-pressed goodness! AKA cold-pressed juice. All of our recipes are made to be delicious and super detoxifying. We do everything with passion.

What would make, or break, your pour? Quality and clever recipes definitely make our pour at Pure Glow. We stand out because we painstakingly design each juice and source only the best ingredients. It’s all made with intention for each customer. Neglecting this is a no-no.

What are you wearing? When in the Pure Glow Lab we are always in our Cargo Crew gear to keep us clean and stylish. Juicing is messy business!

How does your uniform work for you? It sounds silly, but having a uniform to wear, that reflects our business, helps to make the entire work environment a happy one! We love to be goofy but the uniform keeps it stylish and safe for work without it feeling like a stuffy office job.

A new culture club The rise of the dine-in cheese shop

Australia's cheese bars take flight If you're in Sydney we suggest visiting the crew at The Stinking Bishops.

With many of our customers ruling the bar and restaurant roost, there’s never a dull, or hungry moment here at Cargo Crew. Especially when so many of our hospo folk are guns at developing new culinary concepts. One such concept cropping up in the world’s hippest dining precincts, from New York to Cape Town, and naturally Melbourne and Sydney, is that of the dine-in fromagerie, or cheese bar. Typically, the dining experience at a cheese bar revolves tightly around the resident cheesemonger’s selection of cheeses, with tastings, boards, platters and pairings all part of the show. The tasting menu is usually supplemented with a compact range of dishes starring cheese (you guessed it!), along with a deft curation of wines, or even cocktails. Keen to lift the lid, we sat down with Melbourne forerunner Milk The Cow for a debrief on the rapid rise of cheese bars. It was unsurprising to hear Milk The Cow’s Emma Merkas explain that they are Australia’s — possibly the world’s — first licensed fromagerie with a focus on cheeses from all around the globe, matched to quality boutique beverages of all sorts. Such is the nature of the Aussie gastronomy scene — always ahead! And ahead, Milk The Cow certainly are. The fromagerie stocks close to 200 cheeses which the crew lovingly pair with wines, beers, whiskies, sakes, cocktails and more. Yet make no mistake, it’s the fromage that takes centre stage. The interior design in both their St Kilda and Carlton outfits focuses sharply on 5-metre long cabinets, where cheeses are stocked on display and cheesemongers can be seen working their craft from every vantage point. “We’re pretty much purists at Milk The Cow. We offer mostly cheese, in all forms. Cheeseboards and cheese flights are our most popular offerings. We also melt cheese into fondues if you prefer it warm. And we offer baked camembert and lesanis — our gourmet version of mac ‘n’ cheese.

“We also credit our educational tasting events like 'Perfect Match' nights, or 'Martinis and Cheese' nights for sparking a new interest in the artisan products we provide. We delve with our experts into tasting notes, pairings, stories and more.” Emma adds. The concept was a success from day one, and has fostered a fromagerie fraternity country wide. “Since we began in 2013, cheese has started trending hard in Australia,” she confirms. If imitation, or inspiration, is the best form of flattery, then Milk The Cow should be proud of the new swathe of cheese offerings that deliver the good stuff in all its various incarnations. Here in Melbourne, Milk The Cow keeps good company with Shifty Chèvre in Fitzroy, while in Sydney The Stinking Bishops in Newtown and Salt Meats Cheese in Alexandria provide the fix. Of course a trip to Manhattan would see us chomping down at the near-legendary Murray’s Cheese Bar while in London we’d be keen to hunker down in La Cave A Fromage. Back in Australia, it seems Milk The Cow has nailed the recipe, and as Emma says, any cheese bar worth its salt better offer “Cheese. Booze, and expert knowledge. “Passion is key. We’re very proud of our team of cheesemongers who adore sharing their love of cheese. Everyone can come in and learn more, or nerd out, on cheese stories and play around with pairings and new flavours.” One thing is certain, our love affair with sit-down-cheese has only just begun. Emma concurs, ‘It doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon! New venues are still featuring cheeses and cheese cabinets and cheese flights… we are watching with interest to see how far it will go.” We believe we speak for everyone when we say, let there be no end in sight. For the love of cheese!

“Our Farmer’s Boards come with terrine, frittata and Serrano, for anyone who feels like nibbling on a little more. This summer, we started with cheese and booze gelato (think blue cheese and truffle honey with Pedro Ximenex, which has been a lot of fun”, reveals Emma. In an hyperbolic case of ‘build it and they’ll come,’ Milk The Cow had little problem enticing punters to a novel dining concept. As Emma puts it, “who doesn’t love cheese? And wine? Together? It’s a great place for a romantic date, a casual catch up, a last stop at the end of the night, an early stop before dinner… an afternoon in the sun." thestinkingbishops.com.au

GRINDERS COFFEE ROASTERS Café Culture Originals The perfect combination of skill & tradition in every cup

Carlton's Lygon Street and coffee have a long history together. It was 1962 when Australians first experienced freshly roasted Italian-style coffee, and we've never looked back. Young Italian migrant, Giancarlo Giusti, bought his now iconic red grinder for £1 and set out to bring the tradition of espresso to his new home of Melbourne, establishing Grinders in the back of a Lygon Street shop. Three generations later, Grinders is still pushing Melbourne's coffee culture forward, with new techniques, new roasts, and a new look for the historic Lygon Street coffee house it’s called home for more than 50 years.

Earlier this year we were lucky to attend the unveiling of the newly refurbished Grinders Lygon Street flagship store. Timed to open during Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE), the big reveal featured state-of-the-art equipment, minimalist finishes and sleek concrete benches. However, heritage is still firmly at the heart of things. New glass walls now house the roaster’s iconic red coffee grinder; a centrepiece of the Grinders story and now the Grinders cafe experience. In a room filled with the aroma of fresh coffee, along with a palpable sense of historic relevance, it was a rather special sight to witness the Cargo Crew clad Grinders baristas taking centre stage.

BATHROOMS & BEYOND Crafting the Experience Jason Cook of Salus Body shares his knowledge on the importance of providing great quality bathroom amenities that customers know and trust. Diners now expect great skincare that reflects the ethos of your establishment in the bathroom. The 5 litre pink hand wash dispenser just doesn’t cut it anymore. “Consumers can tell the difference between a great and not so good hand wash or hand cream in your bathroom as many of them now only use natural, Australian made skincare brands at home” says Jason.

Sourcing a natural plant based hand product for your bathroom should be an easy task as many of the Australian skincare brands, such as Salus, offer discounted rates to restaurants, cafés and bars they wish to be associated with. “I would think that most restaurants who are considered in relation to where their produce is sourced wouldn’t want to align themselves with a synthetic or chemically based skincare brand”, he adds.

“In the lifestyle, homewares and department stores around Australia, there is a big move towards consumers purchasing more natural, plant based skincare products. This change has happened because people are now aware that the inclusion of synthetic fragrance or ingredients such as sodium laurel sulfate can irritate or aggravate skin.”

22

THE CREW REVIEW

How do you find a product that aligns itself with your brand philosophy?

Follow Jason’s steps:

1

Look for botanical or natural based formulations

2

Avoid nasty chemicals like SLS and synthetic fragrances

3

Go for Australian-made for quality assurance

4

Order from companies who guarantee stock levels and delivery

5

Make sure the product packaging and quality reflect the aesthetic of your venue

Work is where the heart is It’s all about the passion, the people, and the purpose for these inspiring Australian traders.

Inspiration takes many forms for our crew, from micro-trends spotted in international magazines, to cherished family traditions, or surprising new discoveries. Perhaps, most rewarding of all, is the inspiration that comes by way of our customers and the incredible things they do. Maybe it’s that ideas born from home feel more tangible and fill us with local pride, or maybe it’s the fact that seeing our customers flourish feeds back into our own success, as partners in their story. Either way, when we see great work from our own backyard we can’t help but stop and take notice. Here are some of the Australian retailers, producers and creatives firing up our imagination right now.

Kindred Self Adelaide personal counselling practice, Kindred Self, inspires us to slow down and tap into the values that mean the most to us. Led by Kyrie Kohlhagen, Kindred Self is the embodiment of the founder’s life quest; to feel fully connected to all living things — people, animals, nature and self. At Kindred Self, tending to self is aided by nurturing mind, body and heart. Along with personal counselling, Kindred Self offers heart-crafted products created to help visitors to slow down, to reconnect and live a mindful life. As Kyrie says, “there are many reasons why people have counselling. For some it is a good way to maintain clarity and balance in their life, for others it can be helpful during times of pain and uncertainty.” Mindfulness is certainly something we’re learning to appreciate at Cargo Crew, so we’re taking a leaf out of Kyrie’s book by seeking connectedness in our daily routines.

Oscar Wylee If love is in the eye of the beholder then consider us sold on the crew at Oscar Wylee, who’ve brought a fresh approach to the Australian optometry experience. From edgy fit-outs to a staff uniform featuring our Bailey Denim Shirts, there is nothing routine about a visit to Oscar Wylee. Considering the clout of the competition they’ve taken on, Oscar Wylee is as gutsy as it is gorgeous, speaking volumes to fashionable folk who value scripted eyewear for its sartorial value in equal measure to 20-20 vision. The business, which started out with the simple objective of leading the way as a socially conscious enterprise, has a lot of heart too, creating thoughtful and affordable eyewear and giving back to those less fortunate. Through their ‘I Care for Eyecare’ initiative, Oscar Wylee contribute to making a positive impact globally by donating a pair to someone in need for every pair purchased. We salute the masters of cool, and the warmth they bring to the eye care category.

The Eventurer Melbourne wedding and event planners extraordinaire, The Eventurer, have perfected two of our favourite things! Jaw droppingly, gobsmackingly beautiful room and bloom arrangements and wonderously stylish gold embroidery on our Bailey Denim Shirt. These passionate creatives believe in the power of aesthetics and that clever design and styling should tell a story, whether you’re an individual or a brand. Naturally, you’d expect a strong creative ethos in the events industry, but The Eventurer go a step further to embody design thinking in every little thing they do. It really is all in the detail, and we absolutely love that about them.

Where the Foodies Shop There’s no such a thing as a quick stop at an independent grocer. At least not one worth its salt — the kind of shop where passionate owners tenderly curate the eats and treats their local patrons adore best. In such a place you’re sure to stumble upon a new addition to your basket, or blissfully seek out the tried and trusted favourites your ‘local’ is known for. It’s easy to see why food fans love shopping local! As Australia’s romance with fine food continues to build, more of us are shunning fluorescent lights and wide aisles in favour of intimate encounters with exotic produce, special imports and handpicked goods, safeguarded in cosy shops and specialty grocers. Here are some of the indie shops fuelling our foodie fires.

On a thin strip of the Mornington Peninsula between the beaches of Rye and Sorrento, and a stones throw from the rolling slopes of Red Hill, lies Blairgowrie, a spot where a new calibre of cafes and culinary offerings are drawing hungry crowds from all corners. Stirring the region’s foodie renaissance is IGA X-press Blairgowrie, an independent supermarket led by Sally Bernal, her husband and their daughters. As self-confessed foodies with a passion for the restaurant scene, Sally and her girls make it their business to interpret recipes and trends so as to forecast the groceries their customers will be seeking. Much of this sought-after produce is supplied from Red Hill and Mornington Peninsula’s brightest crop of growers, grinders and gastronomers. Local, is after all, what the customers desire, and who could blame them with the likes of Red Hill Muesli, Baker Boys, Flinders Bakehouse, Main Ridge Dairy, T’Gallant Wines, and Delgrosso’s Orchard singing out from the shelves. Of course a sampling from the ‘big smoke’ is always welcome, with Melbourne’s Bakery Lievito, Laurent, GF Precinct Gluten Free Bakers and Phillippa’s among Sally’s roster of handpicked baked goods. It’s the independent nature of Sally’s business that allows her to pick and choose the produce she knows her customers prefer. Patrons reap other benefits from the independent experience too. “We believe our status as an independent retailer is important to shoppers and we receive many

compliments on our experienced staff, many of whom have been with us for a long time. Our customers enjoy being acknowledged by familiar faces. Behind the scenes, Sally and her team are bolstered by the IGA network, empowering the Blairgowrie grocer, and shopper, to benefit from both sides of the ‘big supermarket’ coin. “We run our stores independently backed with the IGA brand and buying power. Support is provided through IGA, in regards to ranging and fitout, but we are free to stamp our own individuality on the store. We’ve made the store feel fresh, clean and interesting with unique lighting, furniture and fittings. Our store is individual and creates a pleasant shopping experience,” Sally explains. Kitted out in Cargo Crew, the independent flair of what is surely Blairgowrie’s most tempting grocery store, plays out in a theme Sally and her team crafted based on location. “In keeping with our personal take on things, our uniform blends well in our environment by the sea. It's neat, fresh and attractive. Our staff and customers are complimentary on this subject,” she adds.

SHOP INDEPENDENT

Balwyn’s Best Over in outright food-obsessed Melbourne, Balwyn locals are just as enthused with their independent grocer of choice, Boccaccio Supa IGA Balwyn. Owner Stefano D’Anna tells us that here, the store’s personal choice in retail uniform represents a purpose to ‘do things differently’. “Our Cargo Crew uniforms give our staff a sense of belonging, and it allows the customer to easily identify us if they have any comments or queries. We go above and beyond the bog standard supermarket kit, it’s yet another thing we do differently, because we can. It all adds up to a rather unique experience,” says Stefano. Creating a different experience lies in the very DNA of a much-loved family business with over 50 years to its name. “We’ve shifted quite a bit from our origins in the 60s as being a bread delivery service on the back of a push bike. Since then we’ve continuously expanded, looking at what we can do next and persistently trying to improve the customer experience to be that one-stop-shop where you can come get your toiletries, tallegio and t-bone,” explains Stefano. On the theme of disruption Stefano adds, “In terms of the supermarket experience we are always thinking of ways to improve. In that sense we’re on the verge of installing a premium meat display complete with hanging cuts of meat and a dry aging facility for a more upmarket experience. We also just launched our fresh fish service and we’re on the cusp of a Japanese sushi counter. After that the next big

thing is possibly a wine bar above the shop. For our supermarket, we used Eataly as inspiration. For the wine bar, we looked to Roscioli in Rome which is an experience in itself.” The Burke Road supermarket’s independent position within the IGA network means inspiration from idols and innovators can very much become a reality in store, a boon for customers who are just as interested in the latest culinary developments. To this end, Stefano sees the local palette yearning ever more for European fare, and produce of origin. “Customers are definitely seeking European inspired food and wines. It’s very refreshing to see the satisfaction from customers who can visit Sardegna for example, and then come into the store and pick up that same bottle of Vermentino and piece of Pecorino that they had over there. Of course locally sourced produce is in equal demand, with Boccaccio satisfying its patrons beautifully with milk from St. David’s Dairy in Fitzroy, Dr Marty’s Crumpets from Cremorne, and Drury Lane English Muffins from Melbourne, to name a few. “We don’t just work here, we also shop here. So we want customers to be able to buy things we take home,” shares Stefano.

“We supply trade from our own vans. We have a lot of restaurateurs and wine industry people shopping in our store for their own personal needs, but we also supply the majority of restaurant trade with wines, small goods and cheese as well as beers and mineral water.” On the hospitality shopping list is Ruliano Prosciutto from the hills of Parma, Nerello Mascalese, an indigenous red wine grape from Passoposciaro in Mt. Etna, washed down with special cuvees of wines such as Brunello di Montalcino. Far from the rows of stock standard fare on offer at the big chains, independents like Boccacio’s and IGA X-press Blairgowrie are able to cater to customers who are increasingly passionate about the finer details, be they trade, local families or visiting foragers. Stefano concludes, “I think across the board the range of products and wine we keep are what gets the customer most excited. You can watch a cooking show on TV and come in the next day to get that peculiar ingredient you spotted. Or, you can track down that authentic artisan product you just read about, whether from 2kms down the road, or from a hillside town on Mt. Etna. Quality, originality, and at every day prices above all else, are what keep our customers coming back for more.

‘Home’ is not the only destination for Boccacio’s fare, with Melbourne cafes and restaurants equally keen on stocking their kitchens with independent produce.

The Visual Merchandiser There are so many tricks of the trade, from the detailed to the simple. Smart merchandisers know to appeal to all of the senses not just the visual cues — Ainslie Woodham

What does a day in the life of a Visual Merchandiser at the top of her game look like? We chat with Ainslie Woodham, Visual Manager —Promotions & Brand at Freedom Australia, who shares insights and tips gleaned from her years on the shop floor.

Q. W hat does a day in the life of a Visual Merchandiser look like?

Q. What are some of the more sophisticated approaches retailers take when organising floor stock?

Q. H ow does staff presentation play a role in telling Freedom’s merchandising story?

“The daily routine for the visual department is non-existent! We are a team that needs to be flexible to help cater for the ever-changing needs of the business, so our people thrive on diversity. Our daily challenges are just as varied, but a consistent obstacle would be the restraints surrounding the balance between creativity and reality. Visual Merchandising (VM) is finding the right mix of pushing boundaries and customers’ expectations whilst still being able to create concepts that are viable to a completely tactile and changing environment.”

“With customers demanding an easier shopping experience, retailers are being forced to review how stock availability is handled at shop floor level. Smaller retailers are taking cues from department store models by laying out stores to a functional or cross-departmentalised layout — allowing customers to shop by need rather than desire. Other retailers are looking at sectioning product according to price point and using subtle cues like packaging to mark the differentiation to customers. Those retailers ahead of the game are taking the opportunity to review the need for large volumes of floor stocks by creating a strong presence of seamless online to in-store experiences with services such as click and collect.

“In our recent uniform refresh our team were part of the design process. The Freedom uniforms needed to translate in a ‘first impressions’ manner that our team are not just furniture retailers but a group of people that live and breathe design and trends. We needed a uniform that reflected our brand’s fun relaxed spirit and I think this has come across beautifully with all of the pieces within the Freedom uniform collection.”

“Essentially, we’re responsible for translating the buyer’s vision whilst also aligning with marketing to ensure a seamless journey from media and social platforms to our stores. It’s all about creating one clear succinct capsule, the Freedom brand. Most of our concepts start from a creative idea and evolve once we apply rationale from strategic needs or commercial objectives. We believe the idea needs to be as commercially strong as it is aesthetically. Pretty just doesn’t cut it in a competitive retail market, you need both in equal measures.”

Q. Has VM changed since you started? “Absolutely, with the recent European and US retailer invasion, customers are being educated on how theatrical and entertaining retail can be. This is raising standards and expectations. It is also exposing the complacencies of those ‘inspirational retailers’ already established in the Australian market. In short, customers know they can expect more and so businesses need to step up to the challenge to remain relevant. VM now needs to be all encompassing from theatrical to informative — using the latest trends, platforms and technologies available. Successful brands are turning to merchandising approaches to re-invent the customer experience, and to carve out a unique position within their market.”

30

Q. What are some of your favourite VM tips? “There are so many tricks of the trade, from the detailed to the simple. Smart merchandisers know to appeal to all of the senses not just the visual cues. Food retailers have been using the sense of smell for decades and now it seems to be popping up in the most unlikely of places. There is a real trend for business to build a brand scent, evoking an instant sense of ease and creating a strong association to the brand.”

Q. Freedom designed a role-based staff wardrobe with flexibility. For instance, your retail staff wear the Bailey Denim Shirt styled on its own with black pants, or finished with a Henry Pebble Bib Apron with tonal ream Herringbone Straps. What does this decision say about the Freedom philosophy? “I think it quite clearly makes a point that the business recognises each individual role that needs to come together to create the one big picture- the Freedom brand. It recognises that each of these roles plays a very different part in the equation and that it wants this to be part of our story. Freedom is not brought to market by one individual, it is very much a team effort.”

“At Freedom we like to master the basic fundamentals, things like points of interest at ends of walkways to draw customers to certain locations, directional lighting to create instant ambiance and functional merchandising such as keeping consistent shelf lines to frame products and keeping products at accessible heights. Not revolutionary rules of practice but incredibly effective and surprisingly lacking in a lot of everyday retailers.”

Q. What are the major trends sweeping VM?

Q. What are some of the less obvious merchandising cues that customers might not notice immediately?

Q. What trend is on its way out?

“That’s the point isn’t it, VM shouldn’t be seen, it should be second to the product. Businesses that use simplified approaches usually have the strongest impact. From the use of paired back displays and subtle repetition of brand, stores that use consistency across every touch point have the strongest visual results.”

THE CREW REVIEW

“A lot of retailers are playing with the notion of scale and proportion, texture and space. High-end retailers have been playing with these principles for a number of years but it is interesting to see how midmarket retailers are filtering this in to their store formats.”

Budget merchandising, thank goodness! That old school approach of ‘stack ‘em high watch ‘em fly’ is swiftly being ousted as entry-level retailers such as Kmart, Ikea and H&M lift their game. By shifting their merchandising standards up they are forcing all businesses to do the same, leaving the budget VM approach to no relevant market.

Make Like The

SCANDINAVIANS Interior trends come and go, but there’s no end in sight for the Scandinavian look, a firm favourite from retail to hospitality and residential home design alike. Why do we love it so much? There’s a lot to be said for the marriage of a pure, paired-back style that is centred around warm functionality, sleek lines, honest craftsmanship and subtle elegance. Include strong cues from nature, a focus on lighting and earthy muted tones offset by natural materials and minimal ornamentation, and the Scandinavian approach lends itself particularly well in commercial interior design. Here’s how to make it work in your retail space.

TIMBER Wood is a major feature. Think blonde, ash, and walnut — but not yellow. Stick with one, or use a range to add texture and variety to a soft neutral palette. Timber wall-cladding and flooring add a classic Scandi touch.

TEXTURE

COLOUR

Mimicking nature, layered textures add warmth and interest to the retail space. Natural materials bring inherent rich texture to the room; timber wood grain, woollen fibres, fleshy plants, iridescent minerals and stones — so use these materials and finishes to bring a homely, welcoming feel to any commercial space.

Think of Scandinavian design and the colours that come to mind are white and black, in that particular order. But adopting a Scandi-inspired style doesn’t mean you need to ditch colour completely. Carefully placed pops of cool greys, warm beiges or muted pastels blend particularly well with the whites and timbers that dominate the Scandi palette. A retail space is typically a colourful affair with various stock on display. Use muted interior colours to allow breathing space for product, and to create an overall aesthetic that doesn’t feel overwhelming.

FURNITURE Furniture from the Nordic nations has a quiet, understated aesthetic. Scandinavia has a particular flair for affordable, functional furniture, made using natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. Authentic mid-century period pieces make a good foundation, but equally so do contemporary clean lined, minimalist pieces in natural timber. 60s and 70s inspired leather and metal pieces work well as accent pieces.

NEGATIVE SPACE PERSONALITY

Negative space is really important — it allows the eye to rest so that a room reads as interesting and not chaotic. Clutter is to be avoided, so look to neat, geometric arrangements of floor and table stock.

There’s typically an element of childlike playfulness in Scandi design. From silly framed quotes, to eclectic but understated ornaments and unique handcrafted accessories, a subtle tongue-in-cheek feature can hint at your store’s personality.

NEWS FROM NYC

Cargo Crew arrives at Grand Central Terminal

From Melbourne Australia to Grand Central Terminal New York, Cargo Crew has officially arrived on the international stage at none other than world-renowned restauranteur Claus Meyer’s brand new 5,000 square foot eatery, Great Northern Food Hall. Selected by the Danish culinary entrepreneur’s US team, we’re thrilled to be dressing the Great Northern Food Hall with uniforms which compliment the venue’s abundant Nordic flavour. Famous for co-founding and co-owning Noma in Denmark, which holds two Michelin stars, as well as launching the New Nordic Cuisine movement, the Great Northern Food Hall is Claus Meyers first US venture.

Claus Meyer

Great Northern Food Hall is located in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall at 89 E.42nd Street, accessible through the 42nd Street and Park Avenue entrance.

Set in Grand Central Terminal's iconic Vanderbilt Hall, the Great Northern Food Hall comprises five distinct food pavilions and a bar. Each concept celebrates Nordic roots with a focus on pristine seasonal produce harvested from the New York region. “The idea behind Great Northern Food Hall has been to come up with a program that reflects where we are as well as where we come from, all the while being accessible to all, serving food with the textures and flavours we love,” explained Claus Meyer.

“That means pastries baked throughout the day, light-roasted coffee, Danish open-faced sandwiches, vegetable-driven Nordic bites, and lots of options with healthy whole grains, all made in-house by our chefs and bakers.” When Meyer’s team first contacted us it was a momentous occasion for Cargo Crew. Once it was confirmed that we’d been selected to outfit the landmark dining concept, located in Grand Central no less, we felt truly honoured. “To be part of this handpicked group is testament that our offering is unique and has global appeal”, said Felicity Rodgers, Creative Director of Cargo Crew. The uniform items picked by Team Meyer include Cargo Crew’s signature Barkly Bib Apron in Indigo Denim teamed with a selection of tonal shirts including the Smith Oxford Shirt in Sky Blue, Bailey Denim Shirt and the Rex Utility Shirt, a new arrival to our collection. Felicity describes the uniform wardrobe curated for Great Northern Food Hall as “simple understated style. Denim drill combined with oxford weaves and chambray blends ensure a Nordic aesthetic is echoed.”
