Hello When last year’s organisers announced they wouldn’t be running the 2016 Jazz Festival, the town of Brecon skipped a heartbeat. We rely on this busy weekend, not just financially but socially too. Good news for Brecon was when Brecon Fringe, Brecon Jazz Club, the Cathedral, Theatr Brycheiniog, and other organisations got together to plan a weekend of superbness. Bravo to all involved. With a glorious Jazz line up planned, word got around and the various Fringe venues rallied around to get impressive line ups for the weekend, known locally as Jazz weekend! This year we felt it was rather fitting to be named the Brecon Jazz : Fringe Guide as we’re bringing the two together to make a spectacular weekend. We’ve increased the size of the map for those not familiar with the town. With the various venues clearly marked. Throughout this issue we include various features should you find a quiet spot during the busy weekend. A big favourite last year was Getting to Know the Bands, this returns with even more bands interviewed. My two favourite questions are ‘Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage?’ and ‘What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band?’. There really are some smashing answers throughout the quide. Thank you to each of the bands and solo artists that took the time to send us their answers. Thank you to Nigel Roberts and team at Imaginet for hosting the Fringe website, to Nigel and Karin for keeping the listings updated and the social media platform Alive and Kicking. Now get out your dancing shoes (preferably a low heel for me these days), arrange to meet family and friends, get to Brecon and enjoy. Lisa Marie and Team x

We have five 2017 Local Landscapes Calendars up for grabs! What better way to remind you of the Brecon Beacons than to have one of these hanging on your wall next year. All you need to do is complete the word search on page 23. Good luck! Closing date: 31st August 2016. Winners will be picked at random.

A Celebration of Jazz, Collaboration & Wellbeing... Hello from Brecon Jazz Club and welcome to our part in the Festival Weekend 2016. This year, many of us are working together – Brecon Fringe, the Cathedral, Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon Jazz Club, and organisations including Friends of Brecon Jazz – to bring the concerts, events and programmes you find in this Guide. This is our fifth year as a co-promoter of Brecon Jazz Festival and our Jazz Club programme has some themes - highlighting and showcasing the role of women in jazz, the importance of festivals and music in our sense of wellbeing, and the creativity that comes from new combinations, where we mix the best of Welsh jazz with musical guests to curate new lineups. So, for our theme of women in jazz, we’ve drawn on our contact books to involve musicians such as headliners vocalist Tina May (Saturday), saxophonist Trish Clowes (Sunday), with double bassists Erika Lyons and Ruth Bowen, percussionist Cathy Jones, tenor sax player Deborah Glenister. On keyboards, we’ll hear Jen Wilson (Friday) and on Sunday Carole Nelson (piano).Vocalists include Elaina Hoss (Friday),Alexa Dene, MeganThomas
2
(Saturday), all musicians in their own right, and drummer Romarna Campbell (Friday/first concert). We’ve tried to include ‘women in jazz’ in all our lineups. Make it to our Sunday chill-out session (at the Muse) and you’ll hear violinist Heulwen Thomas jazzing it up into the evening with Maria Walsh (vocals) and others. Female leaders will also feature in our workshops with Cathy Jones (Latin voice/percussion) and Erika Lyons. In the Guildhall, there’ll be jazz vocals from Elissa Evans and Margot Morgan for the opening on Friday of the ‘Women in Jazz’ exhibition. It is on loan from Jazz Heritage Wales, one of our programme partners. Our second theme - jazz, music and wellbeing – is developed not just through wonderful concerts, but through a series of therapeutic music-making workshops, with musician and music therapist Erika Lyons. These sessions - some more jazzy, some just there to blow away the blues - and at different venues (Guildhall, Muse, Castle Hotel) are for you, for families, or to meet new people. We truly believe in the power of music. to make us feel better. For people wanting more instrument /

tuition-focused sessions, Cathy Jones and Trefor Owen are running vocal and percussion and guitar workshops respectively £8/£10). See the programme for details. We all know that Jazz – the genre - can inspire ecstasy, fear, even distain – but look at our programme, and there is something for everyone to enjoy! Who could resist the sounds of a big band playing on a summer evening, with swinging vocals and wonderful dancers to watch or move alongside to? And all with the backdrop of the wonderful green panorama from the Castle Hotel Ballroom. Friday’s the night:Teddy Smith, a leading talent on the young Welsh jazz scene, has put together his Big Band of rising stars and established names, with great, swinging arrangements. There’ll be vocal numbers from one of the best singers around, Elaina Hoss, alongside heroes of sax and trumpet, Dominic Norcross and Gethin Liddington (starts 8.15, buffet included, Castle Hotel). Come early to the Castle on Friday (from 6pm), and hear an absolute gem, the Geoff Eales Trio – with Erika and Romarna on bass & drums – with some really tuneful, melodic piano-based jazz. Geoff is an internationallyrenowned pianist who is returning to his Welsh homeland to play this special ‘Brecon Jazz’ concert and in support of the Jazz Club’s weekend programme. Tickets available
now, Friday evening Castle Jazz deal - two concerts & supper just £25 - www.breconjazzweekend.org Saturday sees more keynote events: 2.15pm the wonderful Trefor Owen (guitar) / Megan Thomas (vocals) Quartet – a lineup with a strong ‘Welsh’ flavour – playing and singing some of the loveliest numbers in the jazz playlist, with second lead guitarist Andy Hulme and Ruth Bowen on double bass (Guildhall, 2.15pm Saturday, £9, or weekend deal). Saturday evening sees the stunning jazz vocalist of our weekend headline, Tina May. She is a Cardiff graduate and a specialist in the music of Brazil. But this is very special programme and lineup. Totally new and premiered here, the Wales-UK Jazz Ensemble features local luminaries Jonathan Crespo, Cathy Jones,AidanThorne,Alexa Dene, as well as visitors Gui Tavares and Pedro Asencio - and young star Lloyd Haines on drums, returning to his Welsh roots from a busy career in London. (Guildhall, 8.15pm Saturday, £14 or ‘Weekender’ deal includes our 3 Guildhall concerts). Sunday lunch is taken care of, jazz style, with a film, a buffet and some live music with (on vibes) Ashleyjohn Long & Friends. Book your place now (12-3pm, £10 or Muse Sunday deal). Our Sunday night ‘Guildhall’ headline sees a sensational lineup of young talent. The Brownfield Byrne Quintet who emerged into the Jazz headlights from rural North & Mid Wales. Led by award-winning Jamie Brownfield (trumpet) and Liam Byrne (tenor sax), they’ve been capturing national attention for some years for their superb musicianship and clever arrangements. Here, they meet up for a swing and bebop special with renowned saxophonist Trish Clowes, a star in her own right, to play a unique set. Event supported by North Wales Jazz. (Guildhall, 6pm Sunday £12 or weekend deal). So the question remains of how to end the weekend? Sunday eve at the Muse is the perfect answer for chill out jazz with Maria Walsh and Carole Nelson - amazing jazz duo from Dublin, award winning songwriters and performers, - and the ‘Welsh’ team completing the lineup, Brecon’s Ian Cooper on double bass, and from Cardiff and West Wales, Heulwen Thomas on violin. With food & bar available all evening, it promises to be a magical, memorable evening in great company. Expect Welsh and Celtic infusions all round! (8.15pm, £7 or Muse Sunday deal, both events, £15). So Brecon Jazz is ‘ALIVE AND WELL’, full of jazz, new combinations, and festive wellbeing. Come along and share it with us. www.breconjazzweekend.org Article supplied by Brecon Jazz Club

Get to Know the Bands / Artists! We asked the bands and groups playing at this years Fringe Festival a few questions ... here are their answers. (Continued on pages 20, 41 & 46)
James Kennedy
John Stuart Hogg
Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Yes! I fell into the Drum Kit at a huge Festivals & cut my head open. I didn’t realise I’d cut myself and carried on singing the rest of the show. I had a full medic team stitch me up after the show & apparantly I looked like I’d be shot. The audience must have thought I looked mental!
Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Not really apart from the usual – getting distracted and getting wrong words out (aka improvising).
What do you do in the band? Guitar & Vocals.
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? Tons of stuff! Accidentally locking myself onto the roof of an apartment block in Toronto at 5am whilst at a Jacuzzi party, so I was only wearing shorts & was soaked right through, was pretty funny (after I’d been found of course!) - although at the time, I kind of envisioned that I was going to die there, freezing wet, in the Canadian winter, on a stranger’s rooftop. What song do you remember most from your teenage years? Anything from the Holy Bible album by the Manic Street Preachers. What are your plans for the future? Making a new album at present for release next year. What are your influences? People, places, experiences, stories, sounds, experiments. Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? Often I’m driving in the car – which is unlucky for me because I absolutely hate driving! Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? I enjoy playing ‘Break This’ live with the band!
What do you do in the band? Singer Songwriter.
What song do you remember most from your teenage years? Early Genesis songs – probably Supper’s Ready. What are your plans for the future? Get first collection of songs recorded and do some collaborations with other musicians. What are your influences? American country blues and folk inspired artists and 1960s/70s folk / guitar artists like Nick Drake, James Taylor, Kelly Joe Phelps, John Martyn. Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? In the garden playing guitar or sometimes strange ideas for lyrics when riding my bike. Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? I enjoy the simple ones most – probably one called “Sweet Clementine”. Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Acoustic fingerpicking guitar with songs about things like home, mountains and journeys. Somewhere between folk, blues and country. John Stuart Hogg - Playing at The White Swan, Llanfrynach 4pm on Saturday 13th August.
Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Alternative Rock (My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds To Mars, Placebo etc).
Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? Come and say hi on my Social networks (@JamesKennedyUK on everything!). James Kennedy - Playing at The Tap, Brecon 2.30pm and The Three Horseshoes, Groesffordd 8.30pm on Saturday 13th August. 4

Ten Years of Brecon Fringe Festival Exhibition An exhibition covering ten years of the Brecon Fringe Festival takes place at the Andrew Lamont Gallery on the second floor of Theatr Brycheiniog running from 5th August - 30th August. The exhibition will be a pictorial celebration of Brecon Fringe Festival, since its rebranding in 2005, and will include photographs taken over the past decade also posters from the various venues promoting bands - some still with us and some long gone. However, this exhibition is also a collection of memorabilia, so you might be surprised by reminders from the not so distant past. Fringe Guides, tee shirts, beer mats, banners, even the odd set list.Who knows? Looking through submissions from local photographers Huw Parsons and Barry Hill and music promoter Angus Kings, it’s remarkable what we can forget in ten years. The stage at the Clarence was once a small stone construction - as seen in one of Huw’s photos graced by Elvis Preseli emerging from a comedy coffin. The more eagle-eyed Fringe goers might recognise hillbilly
bluegrass stars, Roots and Galoots at the defunct Camden Arms, or TV themesters Electric Tomato at the now-closed Bull’s Head on The Struet. But as one door closes another opens, and the Fringe has seen new venues join like The Muse and the Hours Cafe & Bookshop. The camera continues to document the ebb and flow. So if you find yourself banded-out over Brecon Fringe and need a break, spend some time in the Andrew Lamont Gallery at Theatr Brycheiniog.TenYears of Brecon Fringe a living history of Brecon’s wild weekend in August. Please note the Gallery is not always accessible so please phone the theatre box office before making a special trip: 01874 611622.

Taking part, completing the challenge... and having fun! The 2016 Canalathon is a 35-mile team endurance challenge along the picturesque Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. Teams of 4 are expected to tackle the 3 disciplines of open canoeing, cycling and running / walking from Pontymoile to Brecon. The emphasis is very much on taking part and completing the challenge and having fun rather than racing. As such there are no prizes for winners but there are T-Shirts for all taking part and chunky medals for all finishers.

All canoe, paddles and buoyancy aids are supplied. Bike Hire can be arranged at extra cost through Bikes and Hikes in Brecon.Teams are encouraged to have a couple of helpers or team managers to take and collect bikes from transitions. Lar Hughes - Moonlight Drive What do you do in the band? Sing and play guitar. Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Been a little too drunk to remember the start of a song. Although been a little too drunk to feel embarrassed about it too! I’ll put it down to the half bottle of cough medicine tho – don’t mix your drinks! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? There have been quite a few gigs where people have taken all their clothes off. There were 30 arrests at my first gig due to violence! (Those people were clothed). What song do you remember most from your teenage years? California Uber Alles – The Dead Kennedys. Drove my mum mad! What are your plans for the future? Release the new Moonlight Drive album to widespread critical acclaim and then it’s on to world peace and the destruction of the Trump Empire! Do you have any hidden talents? Answering questionnaires... What are your influences? So many – The Clash, lots of proper old punk and Americana – Neil Young, Band of Horses, plus Tom Waits, REM, etc... Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? Driving or in bed... make of that what you will... Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? Can’t Set Sail... or hopefully the next song I write. Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: The band sound is somewhere between REM, Band of Horses with a bit of the Manics orchestral feel. When I’m solo I guess I’m the same but without the rest of the band – and acoustic with more covers and possibly the odd joke thrown in! Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? I’ve been playing for quite a while – have gigged with some of my heroes – Mick
20
Jones (The Clash), The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers with Bruce Foxton, toured a lot and I’ve had a bit of stuff on Radio 1. Hopefully the best is yet to come... Lar Hughes - Playing at The Three Horseshoes, Groesffordd 8.30pm on Friday 12th August, The Tap, Brecon 1pm on Saturday 13th August, and The Sarah Siddons 4pm on Saturday 13th August.
Dan James - Be Bop Da Jig
What do you do in the band? Play, sing, run the band, songwriter and composer. Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Yes, I once spat out my false teeth on a particularly vituperative chorus. Whole band’s playing went wobbly as they dissolved into laughter... What song do you remember most from your teenage years? Thick As A Brick. What are your plans for the future? Carry on regardless. Do you have any hidden talents? I speak Norwegian. Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? Unweaving A Tapestry (surprisingly the one I lost my false teeth on...). Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Think of a folk musician leading a jazz horse to water... Be Bop Da Jig - Playing at The Tap, Brecon 8.30pm on Saturday 13th August.

a young lady and bless, I couldn’t stop laughing as he tried to carry on playing! What song do you remember most from your teenage years? Do They Know It’s Christmas - Band Aid. What are your plans for the future? To enjoy music and enjoy the laughter and good times that comes with it. Do you have any hidden talents? Maybe, but I couldn’t tell, they would not be hidden then...
Melody - Catch 22
What do you do in the band? Lead singer.
Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Your favourite cover songs with a Catch22 rockier Twist.
Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Mmm, I did refer to two people in police uniform who walked in last years gig at The Sarah Siddons as the evenings stripper entertainment... they were real police!
Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? I run a youth group at the moment who sing and dance, there is nothing like feeding music down to the next generation to continue the great musical talent we have in this area!
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? I got the giggles when the bass player got groped by

Brecon | Aberhonddu History, heritage, culture, arts and some fantastic local ale... this market town really packs a punch. And beyond that, it’s a great place to start your exploring. Get on your bike, meander on a boat trip or hire a canoe and head downstream to find a picnic spot. Pack up your fishing rod to find your spot on the towpath, or just take a stroll around one of the many walks of the area. Brynich Something to think about as you enjoy your packed lunch at the picnic spot at Brynich...firstly the aqueduct; it crosses the River Usk and is the largest on this canal. Secondly, if you notice the number on the lock here [69], that gives an indication of how many locks once existed on this canal. Pencelli With the big bend in the canal at Pencelli, it’s not hard to believe that the moat at the former Pencelli Castle was used to make part of the canal here. Talybont-on-Usk A good central activity hub for the upper section of the canal, with numerous walks, including an uphill stroll to the nearby reservoir; canoe launches; cycle hire; or just a great place to rest up, enjoy lunch in a pub or a cream tea in the local shop. Llangynidr Home to the Greenman Festival in the grounds of the Glanusk Estate. On the canal, Llangynidr is known for its locks. You can’t help but stop and watch a working lock, and you’ve five to choose from here. As well as being a beautiful wildlife and picnic spot, the pond between bridges 68 and 67 helps balance these locks with water.

Science Facts: Sound 1. Sound comes from vibrations. These vibrations create sound waves which move through mediums such as air and water before reaching our ears. 2. Our ears vibrate in a similar way to the original source of the vibration, allowing us to hear many different sounds. 3. Dogs can hear sound at a higher frequency than humans, allowing them to hear noises that we can’t. 4. Sound is used by many animals to detect danger, warning them of possible attacks before they happen. 5. Sound can’t travel through a vacuum (an area empty of matter). 6. The speed of sound is around 767 miles per hour (1,230 kilometres per hour). 7. The loud noise you create by cracking a whip occurs because the tip is moving so fast it breaks the speed of sound!

8. When traveling through water, sound moves around four times faster than when it travels through air.
11. The sound of thunder is produced by rapidly heated air surrounding lightning which expands faster than the speed of sound.

Andy Nowak
What do you do in the band? Piano, composition, leader. Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? I had the windows startup sound playing through a massive PA really loud during a best mans speech at a wedding... What song do you remember most from your teenage years? Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins. What are your plans for the future? World domination through jazz! Do you have any hidden talents? I play badminton strangely well. What are your influences? Captain Beefheart, Brad Meldhau, Radiohead and Bach. Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? Anywhere... Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? B7 Blues.
Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Contemporary jazz from the heart.
Toby James Toby’s influences range from Creedence Clearwater Revival, through AC/DC to Bob Marley with any and all stations in between. He has travelled extensively but his ambition is to travel the world busking, living in his camper van and be able to call on friends from the UK to come and do occasional tours with him. He uses a Jam Man looper and an acoustic guitar and sings. He is new to the world of live performance but he is very driven. You are sure to see him out on the road soon! 46
Dr G’s Big Band Gaynor Popplestone. What do you do in the band? Started the band in 2013! MD – choosing music, organising programmes, some singing, occasional trumpet playing, encouraging players & organising events, and harassing people to fill in for us. Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? Having to move the band around just as we’re about to start playing. Last time this happened was on a railway station platform, I thought we about to witness a fight, but we managed to smooth things over somehow. What are your plans for the future? More of the same, I would love to start another band, and also get involved in teaching brass. Both personally and in my everyday job as a doctor, I can see the enormous benefits music brings to all age groups and how much it helps people. What are your influences? Started playing with brass band, lots of hymns and marches, basically plagiarises nearly everything else. Ballet and tap as a child meant exposure to classical music too. Lots of exposure to pop and disco which means I love music that makes people want to get up and dance! Also earliest memories of welsh hymn singing in chapels and years in church choir when young – I love swing jazz and music of the ‘40’s too. Describe your sound for someone who’s never heard you: Swing jazz band, playing lots of traditional favourites, including some Glenn Miller, and older, & big band takes on more modern songs and pop hits. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? Last year, the band came to South Wales and played for my mother’s birthday - she suffered from Parkinson’s Disease, so couldn’t travel to hear us. She sadly passed away this year – however she had the chance to listen to us and loved seeing everyone – and we have some lovely memories. For me it is a reminder not to put things off, but to make the most of the opportunities we have. Dr G’s Big Band - Playing at Pilgrims, Brecon 2.30pm on Sunday 14th August.
