We hope you enjoy the Brecon Jazz and Brecon Fringe Festival. Come back and see us again soon!

Hello It’s that time again! The biggest weekend of the year for our beautiful little market town - The Brecon Jazz and Fringe Festival.

Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB Telephone: 01544 327716 07971 446632 Email: lisamarie@cariadslocal.co.uk Website: www.cariadslocal.co.uk

What a testament it is to Brecon that, despite huge cuts to funding for the Festival, we’ve all banded together to organise what looks sure to be another amazing few days of music and fun! Whatever your musical preferences, there’s sure to be something to suit. Arm yourself with our handy Guide (our map and listings will ensure you’re always in the right place at the right time) and gather together your family and friends. Meander around town and soak up the atmosphere! Perhaps you could enjoy a pint in a jostling pub, or wander into a quieter café for a coffee. Get settled in a beer garden, or move around venues, hearing as many musicians as possible. Pick up fresh, local produce at the Farmers’ Market in the Market Hall; live music will entertain you while you shop. It’s not just the grown-ups who get to join in the excitement: we’ve got some great suggestions from locals for things to do with the kids – there’s going to be so much for them to see and do, with children’s activities being put on at the theatre, the Muse and in Cathedral Close. And don’t forget the all important Frazz Parade on Saturday afternoon! o.uk

Brecon Jazz : A Welsh Legend Brecon Jazz Festival is looking to the future as well as celebrating its legacy. A truly ‘legendary’ event in the Welsh and UK jazz scene, Brecon Jazz has many friends worldwide. Past great names at BJ include Sonny Rollins, Betty Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Pass, Cleo Laine, Stephane Grapphelli, Lionel Hampton, Kathy Stobart, Sun Ra, Bobby Hutcheson, Diana Krall, among others. Recent concerts have featured Martin Taylor, Tina May, Geoff Eales, Jacqui Dankworth, Yolanda Brown – the roll call is just too great to do justice to that huge wealth of talent. So the Festival that brought such stars to Brecon is itself a little bit of ‘Welsh Gold’ too, a legend of this nation in its own right. Many people and groups have given huge efforts in achieving the success of Brecon Jazz Festival – now in its 34th year - and, whatever their funding, the commitment was always well beyond what could be recompensed. So at Brecon Jazz Club, we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate these amazing legacies and to build on them for the future. We were delighted that our application to the Brecon Beacons National Parks for a small grant from the Sustainable Development Fund

2

was successful, and in association with Karin Mear of the Vaults Art Studio, photographer Gena Davies, the albums of local jazzers Pam and Mike Chappell, translator Rhian Wyn Price, and with some help from Brecknock Musuem, we have put together a series of panels. These are The Beginnings of BJF, Local Legends (which shows the links between locally resident jazz musicians-supporters and the wider BJ story), the Hall of Fame of Great Names, and also brings things up to date. One panel, 2016, shows what was achieved when the ‘big money’ and the large contractors left the scene. It was a challenging year - except musically. Because there is really something extraordinary about jazz, which is that, whatever the crowd, the venue, the pay – even the weather - the music is always great! So come along and take part – be part of - Brecon Jazz Festival 2017. The Brecon Jazz Legends exhibition will be on show in the Guildhall Foyer during the Jazz Weekend alongside some artistic ‘impressions of jazz’ from local artists – and a chance to have your say about what Brecon Jazz has meant to you! Brecon Jazz + Festival 2017

We hope you enjoy the Brecon Jazz and Brecon Fringe Festival. Come back and see us again soon!

Brecon Fringe Festival 2017 It’s amazing isn’t it? Who’d have thought? Eleven years of Brecon Fringe to celebrate, and celebrate we will - with an enormous quantity of bands, duos and singer-songwriters playing all across Brecon. At the time of writing this, there are 25 participating venues on The Fringe this year - pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and the odd chapel. It is and always will be, a great opportunity for Brecon businesses to put on live music for their regular customers and visitors to the Fringe. It’s also a great chance to see bands with weird and wonderful names - The Washboard Resonators, Two Day Coma, The Broadway Irregulars, Jesse River Dylan Murray - speaking of which, Jesse runs away with the Best Promo Picture Of The Year this Fringe. The cleverest name this Fringe surely must belong to The Mustang Valleys Soul Band. Not the most immediate of clever names but those of us acquainted with the most requested live song – by Wilson Pickett - will get the joke. Alarmingly, for us oldies, our Fringe features some

very young sub-20s performers Minnie plays The Muse on Fringe Saturday, The Troupe and Freyja Duggan perform at Brecon Tap, and the wonderfully named Alex Ghost performs at Ardent Gallery. Young, gifted and at this year’s Fringe. You’ll even find some hip hop this Fringe with Dream Team, from South Africa and dropping fresh beats on Friday and Saturday. All in all, Brecon Fringe 2017 is likely to be phenomenal. 99% free entry and 100% local community effort. Don’t forget the Frazz parade on Saturday and make sure you pop into Brecon Market Hall for the Friday Indoor Market and the Saturday Farmers Market. For Fringe listings please turn to page 22. Echoing the Jazz Parades of old, the reinvented Frazz Parade is where Brecon Jazz Festival and Brecon Fringe Festival meet. We look forward to Samba Brecon drumming up a crowd and setting the rhythm as we parade through town, with local groups and organisations taking part. All are welcome, come as you are or, if you are feeling more

creative, join in the family workshops at Pilgrims Tea Room, in Cathedral Close, from 11am that day, run by Brecknock Museum. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? I drove to a gig 50 miles away, only to find I was in the wrong venue and was supposed to be in a venue with the same name, but less than 5 miles from my hometown. But luckily I got back to the right venue in time for the gig, with a lot of egg on my face! Do you have any hidden talents? I have presented a Smooth Jazz show for over 10 years now on BRFM radio, but I guess that’s not a talent but more of a privilege...

and other musicians of all levels. You can learn from anyone, but if it’s got true melody I love it. That’s why I enjoy playing with Albino Frogs so much. It’s about playing for the song and each other. It’s not about egos, it’s about enjoyment, and above all for us, “The song is King” . Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? A beautiful ballad called “Time to Time”. It’s a listful and evocative track which tells the story of long Lazy Summer days. And It has a wonderfully tasteful saxaphone solo by the exquisite Rik Lawton too. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?Yes,“mines a pint of Smoove Guvnor”. Alex Ghost What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? ‘Spend The End’ is a song I had written in my days of absolute isolation and sadness. It’s a song that empowered inspiration to my lost heart and my learning head. It’s a song when performed I absolutely do retrace the footprints I once walked and perform with absolute passion. However, the first time I performed it at a pub it just so happened to be someone’s birthday, and “Happy Birthday” was being sung at the same time. What song do you remember most from your teenage years? “Highway To Hell” - AC/ DC. Not only was it the first song I ever learned on guitar, but I also got to play it with AC/DC’s replacement drummer, Bob Richards! What are your influences? To show that it’s ok to have a few screws loose, because through the cracks it can show the shine of your heart. (Also Thom Yorke). Where are you normally when you get inspiration to write a song? Probably in bed, 3:30am unable to sleep then suddenly BAM! I just have to get up and write ideas down for the next day. Out of all your own songs, which one is your favourite? It depends on the mood. If I feel like my heart yearns to dance, I’d listen to ‘It Exists’. If I feel my soul is ready to burst with love, I’d perform ‘Old Sparks’. If my head is running memories down a path of love and past-time adventures, it’s ‘I Remember A Time’. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? This is my third time at ‘The Brecon Fringe Festival’. But it’s my first time ever performing. Last year I was falling asleep in ‘The Markets Tavern’, dancing to ‘The Wurzuls’ In ‘The Market Hall’ and being called on-stage to smash a cymbal in The Muse. I said to myself; ‘I’m going to perform at this festival next year’. Alex Ghost - Playing at The Ardent Gallery 2pm on Saturday 12th August & The Castle Hotel 2.30pm on Sunday 13th August

Running on Empty Individual’s name: Ben Gothard. What do you do in the band? Guitarist and occasional singer. Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage? We once played the entire 1st set of a gig without the front of house speakers plugged in. It sounded great on stage through the monitors, so we couldn’t understand why people couldn’t hear us, or why our sound guy was pulling his hair out! Then we saw the lack of cables in the back of the speakers, took a quick break and by the end of the night the crowd were dancing on the tables! What song do you remember most from your teenage years? We all have different influences, which is why we play such a diverse range of music. But we are all fans of Eric Clapton and Blues/Rock music. What are your plans for the future? Just keep playing, it’s the best feeling getting up there and playing for people. We’re also hoping to be the live band for a burlesque show later this year, that should be fun! What are your influences? We all have pretty diverse influences, from Paul Robeson through Paul Kossoff and Paul Carrack and onto Paul Gilbert (that was intentional, we like people who aren’t called Paul too!). Honestly though, if it’s good music, we like it and will give it a go. Out of your own songs, what is your favourite? I wrote a song for my wife and surprised her with it on our wedding day. I’m quite proud of that one. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you? We bought a multitrack recorder earlier this year and are working on recording a few tracks. Maybe we’ll do a couple of those songs we’ve written for you all to hear! Running on Empty - Playing at The Boars Head 1pm on Saturday 12th August & The George Hotel 9.30pm on Saturday 12th August.
