Welcome to our Autumn / Winter issue. This year we decided to get the magazine out earlier than in 2014, so it goes out to Nurseries, Schools and community pick up points mid October. Why? Because local parents told us they wanted ideas for October Half Term. Tick. They wanted inspiration for their Christmas Shopping. Tick. They wanted to know about local Fairs and Events way in advance of the busy December month. Tick. As usual, we’ve had a ball putting this publication together. We aim to provide you with as much variety as possible, we do the leg work, you sit back with a brew making your way from cover to cover ... maybe with a few interruptions from the kids: “Mum can you get me a drink?”; “Dad will you come play with us?”. We tell you our own experiences. Laura’s boys, aged 6 - 11 years popped along to The Gaming Hub, Brecon. Read all about it on page 15. Late Summer, myself and some friends finally took the children to Quackers in Newbridge, what a little gem of a place. See page 11 for more details. Recently I met local children’s wear designer Katherine Trigg, living right here on our doorstep. Turn to page 23 for our Local Talent feature.
Working with 14 local Children’s Nurseries and 26 local Primary Schools in the following towns and villages: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Michaelchurch Escley, Peterchurch, Sennybridge, Talgarth and Whitney-on-Wye. Next issue out in time for the Easter Holidays . . . CariAds Local Ltd. can not be held responsible for any inaccuracies in advertisements nor for any consequences arising from this. On page 26 you’ll see a Word Search with the chance to win one of the three prizes listed below. Please complete, or ask the children to complete, and if parents could take 5 minutes to give feedback to this issue - we’d love to hear from you, good or bad. With 8 pages of event listings, remember to keep our publication in easy reach. We take you from the start of the October Half Term right up to January 2016. Get in touch if you would like to feature in our Easter issue. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x

Perhaps Pinnacle Essence can help Who do you know who has just redecorated a room in their house and needs a finishing touch? Who do you know who is particular about their home accessories and has to have them ‘just so’? Who do you know who loves finding quirky items to become features displayed in their home? Perhaps Pinnacle Essence can help? Established in 2013, this small handcrafting business has grown steadily over the last 20 months. Initially focusing on made-to-order fabric memory boards, bunting and quilling, Sarah has expanded the range of home décor accents to include and specialise in bespoke lampshades, including a range of gorgeous lampshades for children. Sarah, who is the designer, creator, administrator, marketer and everything else behind the scenes, started Pinnacle Essence to fulfil her love of crafting, and has relished learning new skills to add more creations to her range. With a background in photography, Sarah is also well placed to offer Photographic Business Services to other local business, as well as capture some stunning images of her own makes.
Since moving to the area in 2012, Sarah and her family have fallen in love with the life Brecon has to offer. Her two young boys are big into the outdoors, and the family can often be found ‘popping up’ one of the fine hills and mountains that surround this beautiful location (in between the children’s increasing rugby and football commitments!). Inspired by nature’s beauty, Sarah regularly captures it in abstract, and is now able to turn some of those images into stunning lampshades or decorative candles. So if you would like to commission an individual piece for your home, or know of someone who might like a truly individual gift, why not get in touch with Sarah and see what she can offer you.

We finally made it to Quackers! One of the joys of producing this magazine is coming across places that I didn’t know existed. One of these was Quakers, just outside Llandrindod. At the end of the Summer, on a miserable morning, we and 3 other families went along to the large indoor play centre. In total there were 8 adults, 7 active children aged 1 - 6 years and 1 chilled newborn baby. With slides, a tube slide, roller racers, a rope bridge, ball pool and many other exciting features including softball cannons and double drop slide, there was plenty to keep both little kids and big kids entertained. Us grown ups soon realised it was a great place to let the inner kid thrive! Quackers have the biggest drop slide in Mid-Wales, I’m a little faint hearted so decided to sit this one out, but most of our group gave it a go. We set up a base centrally and found the environment very safe and secure. After a couple of hours we decided to have some
lunch to recharge. The Cowshed Café was superb. There was lots of choice on the menu, and the food was great quality and reasonably priced. The staff were very polite and helpful. After this pit stop the children were promised a further 30 minutes indoors. Once we gathered outside, to our delight the sun had come out. It was time to enjoy the race track with pedal go-karts. What super fun. At one point I had Cariad on my lap in quick pursuit of the others. We (and the families who joined us) will definitely be back. In fact Cariad has asked most children at her nursery to come next time! If you’re looking to plan a group outing for a family gathering, a Christmas party for the local mums and tots group, or a birthday party – Quackers would be a great choice. Take a look at their website for group, event and party bookings. Thank you Quackers for a most enjoyable day. Lisa Marie x

English
speaking parents and carers are very welcome and will be amazed at how easy it will be to pick up basic Welsh words as all teaching is bilingual. Baby signing is well regarded by speech and language therapists as promoting positive verbal and non verbal communication between parents and their children in a loving and sensitive way. Signing alongside spoken language provides a richer language base for brain activity, growth and development. “We will introduce signing during weekly sessions through song, rhyme and books and then reinforced during periods of free play.” Parents are encouraged to then utilise the skills and signs learned during their child’s daily routines to further support their language development. Formal sessions will start on Wednesday 11th November 2015 and will run alongside the academic term times. Sessions will cost £3.50 per child per session with discounts for additional siblings and booking in advance. “As a Welsh medium nursery we are focused on providing every child with the opportunity for early

Review:
The Gaming Hub is definitely the coolest shop in Brecon! Eleri, the owner, is always really nice and helpful. Upstairs, they sell new and pre-owned games. Prices for pre-owned games start from only £2.50. We’ve bought a few games from there and they’ve all worked brilliantly. They’ve also got lots of snacks you can buy, including ice cream and pick & mix. Downstairs is a gaming room. The Gaming Hub has a PS3, an XBOX360 and an XBOX ONE. We tried all three! We’ve been wanting to try an XBOX ONE so that was really good! There’s lots of games to choose from, and awesome gaming chairs that are super comfy. You can even have your birthday party in the gaming room. It’s £30 for six children for an hour, and it includes a free pick & mix for each child. Maximum amount of children is 10, it’s an extra £2.50 per child. We would definitely like to have our birthday parties there! The Williams brothers (aged 6-11 years old)

What is Raven Drama? As a teacher with over 20 years classroom experience, Lynn is dedicated to passing on her love of learning – as well as that of building confidence with young and older learners alike. There is no escape from the fact that we live in a time where inter-personnel skills need to go hand in hand with academic success. The importance of the creative, intellectual and social development of the individual should not be underestimated. Or, in another way, developing your ability to work with other people and developing the confidence in being able to deal positively in a range of situations is a good thing. Both in the school place, the workplace and in our day-to-day living. Captains (and Captainesses!) of industry are constantly worried by the poor communication skills many of us exhibit when entering the workplace. Even educators find the demands and challenges placed upon them to deliver the key Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills in a formal context find there is little time to deliver in a more creative way. By working in a relaxed and supportive environment, Raven Drama can help to develop the confidence of participants through informed and experienced tuition and guidance. Raven Drama aims to encourage creativity, communication skills and confidence building as well as self-discipline, teamwork, reflection and evaluation. Raven Drama has an academic base where an appreciation of literature, poetry and drama is nurtured. However, learning through fun, enjoyment and challenge is the order of the day… Raven Drama can offer the following subjects at KS3/4/5: English Language; English Literature; Drama and Performing Arts theory and practical. If you have any queries regarding one-to-one tuition for your son or daughter, please do contact Lynn to discuss your particular requirements. Groups of up to three can also be catered for which can work well for some. Lynn can help with revision techniques, identifying preferred learning styles, confidence issues with studying. Raven Drama runs a local group in Llangorse. Please contact Lynn if you would her to help develop the skill set of your child, develop confidence, develop written and spoken skills. She can even come in to your school and start up a Drama group or to run a taster session.
, Henry s Book Review: “Hi, I’m Henry. I’m 6 years old and I live in Brecon.” Polly and the Puffin by by Jenny Colgan Polly heard a CRASH downstairs. Was it a monster? NO! Was it a spider alien? NO! It was a little puffin with a broken wing...When Polly discovers an injured puffin, she and her mummy look after him in their cottage by the sea. Slowly, Neil’s wing heals and Polly must prepare herself to say goodbye to her new friend. Will she ever see him again?
”
Perfect for bedtime stories and early readers. From the author of The Little Beach Street Bakery. Contains recipes, activities and jokes in addition to the story. This book is about a little girl called Polly who finds an injured puffin. She calls him Neil and looks after him until he’s better. But then Neil has to go and live with other puffins and Polly is sad. Will Neil come back to visit for some more of Polly’s iced buns? My favourite bit of this book is when Neil comes back, that made me very happy. Neil was my favourite character because he was cute and funny. At the end of the book there are jokes and some recipes. I am going to make the iced buns with my mummy, but I’m going to make white icing not pink.
”
This book is very good and I want to read the other Polly and the Puffin books when they come out! Polly and the Puffin’ is the first in a series of books for young children by best-selling author Jenny Colgan, and features some of the characters from her Little Beach Street Bakery series. 5 Stars

Christmas is coming… The festive spirit is already flowing through The Old Railway Line Garden Centre where Christmas is in full flow! The award winning garden centre, situated in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye always impresses in the build-up to Christmas through a number of events and magical experiences for children.
Recipe: Basic White Bread “I think a lot of people are put off making their own bread because they’re worried it’s really tricky and timeconsuming, when in actual fact it’s pretty easy, and the results are seriously yummy! With 4 growing boys, we get through an awful lot of bread in our house! I typically make bread in my breadmaker (up to twice a day!), but I also love to make it by hand. This recipe makes one medium sized loaf, or 12 rolls.”
Ingredients: 500g strong white bread flour (substitute 100g of the flour for the same weight of brown flour if you fancy a ‘Best of Both’ loaf!) 300ml hand warm water 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 sachet dried yeast 1 teaspoon salt
Method: Manager, Katie Eckley said; “Renowned throughout mid Wales, south Wales and Herefordshire our grotto experience is packed with festive magic, incorporating real life reindeer and a short Frozen Walk before meeting Santa, having a chat and receiving a suitable toy and delicious sweets. “On selected days throughout December the Breakfast and Tea with Santa experiences offer something different to the traditional grotto visit. Children, parents and grandparents can enjoy a delicious meal in the Railway Restaurant before Santa personally visits each table, distributing presents and speaking to each child individually. “After the success of last year we have ‘Santa’s Grand Arrival’ planned for the evening of Friday 27th November (6.30pm); Santa will pull up outside the garden centre on his sleigh before enjoying a fun disco, bouncy castle and a festive menu in the Railway Restaurant with everyone who attends!” For more information please contact the Old Railway Line directly by calling 01497 847055 or visiting their website www.oldrailwaylinegc.co.uk.
1: Place all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together until combined. 2: Leave the bowl in a warm place, with a damp teatowel over it if you like, for about 45 minutes until it’s doubled in size. 3: Turn dough out onto a floured board and give it a good pummeling for 5 minutes. Go on, take out all those frustrations!!! 4: For a loaf, put the dough into a greased bread tin or onto a greased baking tray. For rolls, divide mixture into 12 pieces and place on 2 greased baking trays making sure each piece has plenty of room to grow! 5: Leave the dough for about another 45 minutes until it’s doubled in size again. 6: Preheat oven to 220 degrees celsius and put the bread in. The loaf will take about 30 minutes, the rolls about 15. When cooked, the bread will be risen, golden brown, and sound hollow when tapped from the underneath. 7: Take out of the oven and leave for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. 8: Resist for as long as you can before smothering with butter and devouring! Recipe taken from the Picky Pickers blog, pickypickers. wordpress.com. A blog dedicated to helping parents to steer their fussy little eaters towards more balanced and varied diets.

Do you still believe? I do! How do I know? I met him! Yes really really! He is like you would imagine but even more. I’ve met lots of people who pretend to be him too, but when you actually meet him you really know. He has a big white beard which is a little bit tickly and a little bit scratchy. He wears a long red coat which Mrs Christmas has had to sew patches on, well it’s his favourite one! It’s part of the magic, any other coat wouldn’t do, Christmas Eve is a long night for him and he needs to keep warm on his travels. Do you know how he does it? Well he uses his pocket watch! But how? Well you will have to ask him that! You know he is very very old? He told me the story about how it all began, a long long time ago when he first left secret gifts. What else? Well he wears little round glasses which he sometimes looks over and sometimes looks through … well he needs to so he can read the names in his big book, you know, the book with the lists of all the good and naughty children? I’m in there! Do you want to meet him too? He is coming to Brecon! Just after we start opening our advent calendars, on 5th and 6th December. Mrs Christmas and Clang the naughty elf will be here too. He is staying with his friends at Brecon Cathedral for the weekend. There will be carols and candle light, stories and crafts, yummy food and lovely things to buy. I can’t wait! See you there.

Being a parent to a baby boy, a 3 year old girl, and a step parent to a teenage boy, I love working on this publication. Gathering the various information and exhibiting it in one place. To give them as much variety at their finger tips as possible.
The what’s on section is vital, it’s become peoples ‘Bible’!
