In the last issue I had a little secret that I wasn’t able to share. Well now I can - another Baby Badham is due late April - we are absolutely over the moon, a little nervous but we can not wait! Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB Telephone: 01544 327716 07971 446632 Email: lisamarie@cariadslocal.co.uk Website: www.cariadslocal.co.uk

Working with local Chrildren’s Nurseries and Primary Schools in the following towns and villages: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay-on-Wye, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Sennybridge, Talgarth and Whitney-on-Wye.

For this issue we have been out and about doing the ‘leg work’, to bring you inspiration, whether you are looking for a day out with the family or looking for a certain service or product. Fingers crossed in this Easter issue you’ll find it all. Please seek out and support the new advertisers who have joined Cariads. Over the years James has said some corker one liners. Cariad is also showing great potential. This is of course one of the many great things of all little ones. With this in mind I contacted some local mums and dads to see if they could provide me with a few quotes from their children. Turn to pages 24-25 to read for yourself. You may even know the little person who said such things! You’ll see opposite our advert for the Car Boot Sales we organise. In the many year’s we have been running these I have picked up some right bargains for the children, from books to jigsaws, from clothes to toys. If you were thinking of having a clear out to make some cash for the year ahead, and to relieve a jam packed house, come along. If you don’t need to do a boot yourself, come along and haggle. We hope the new venue and new time will be a huge success. An undercover option will certainly help. Please spread the word to family and friends. Yet again we bring you over five pages of what’s on listings. From weekly classes to one off events. Be sure to check out our monthly magazines Wye Local and Local Beacon for even more going ons. As always, thank you to the Nurseries and Schools for distributing this magazine in the children’s bag. Thank you also to the community points. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x

Shakespeare for children

Get kids outdoors and closer to nature

The Willow Globe (Y Glôb Byw) is a scaled down, living version of the Globe in London, being a third of its size in diameter. The willow has been carefully woven into an organic and spiritual theatre, starkly sculptural in spring, which is almost completely absorbed by its lush, green surroundings in summer months. This secret, magical and intimate space, with a rough thrust stage, is totally unique -

Some of the most beautiful scenery and dramatic landscapes in the Brecon Beacons and Monmouthshire are cared for by the National Trust.

“we believe it is one of the largest willow constructions in the country and probably the only one in use as a theatre in the world”.

And what better way to discover this wonderful countryside than to get involved with our kids events, based around the National Trust’s hugely successful 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ campaign – a list of the best outdoor adventures for children to enjoy and get them outdoors and closer to nature.

Events are planned from April - September, offering syllabus Shakespeare for schools through workshops, community productions and professional tours. It is a venue for an eclectic mix of music, Shakespeare, and other arts happenings. There is the option of wet weather cover in a theatre within their converted barn should it rain.

From the twin peaks of Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du in the central Beacons, to the Sugarloaf and Skirrid Fawr in the Black Mountains near Abergavenny, and from open moors to semi-ancient woodland, it’s the perfect place to get outdoors and explore.

Our rangers will be taking families on their own outdoor adventures this year, starting with our Easter adventure in the

woods and easy-peasy map reading during the Easter holidays, to our Wild Wednesday events taking place every Wednesday throughout the summer holiday. Kids will have the chance to build a den, dam streams, make mud pies and wild art, bug hunt, fly a kite and much more, all in the fantastic setting of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. So if you’d like to get involved, check out our events below and in the what’s on listings of this issue or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sugarloaf-and-usk-valley and www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brecon-beacons Ffotograffaeth/Photographs © National Trust Images/Paul Harris Mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol yn elusen gofrestredig, rhif 205846 The National Trust is a registered charity, no. 205846

Perrygrove Railway: Treehouses, Trains, Treasure and more ... Perrygrove is in the heart of the Forest of Dean; a stunning area. It’s the perfect place to visit with children, whatever the weather. Set high up in the natural tree tops, the tree house cluster is a huge attraction. They’re home to a slide, swing bridge, ladders and miniature houses. It’s also a great place to wave at the train as it passes underneath you! Perrygrove trains wind their way along a ¾ mile track through farmland and woods. A trip takes just over 20 minutes but most passengers get off to go to the play area at Foxy Hollow – or to go treasure hunting – and return by a later train. There is no charge for extra rides – your ticket lasts all day and you can ride the steam train as many times as you like! There are four stations on the railway, each with paths leading to lovely walks through beautiful woodland. They have both steam engines and diesels which feature in their timetable throughout the year.

You can purchase their treasure hunt on arrival and it’s well worth doing. You can go into the woods to hunt for your clues, or stay on the train and find them at the stations. When you think you have all the right answers, come back to the indoor village at Perrygrove station to unlock your box of treasure! The indoor village has five houses connected by secret passages – they’re the perfect place for a game of hide and seek and provides hours of fun in all weather! When the weather is not so good or you want to play in the shade, there’s fun for kids under cover at Foxy Hollow, a short walk from Oakiron station. There’s also space here for ball games and outside fun. Parents and Grandparents enjoy watching the children let off steam here and on the Treetop Adventure knowing that all the outdoor play equipment has been designed with children in mind and is completely safe. Play as long as you like, no time limits on anything at Perrygrove. Have an adventure or a picnic in the ancient oak wood where the miners of long-ago have left their mark. Please note walks are as natural as possible – some of the paths are uneven and steep. Sensible shoes and clothes are recommended in the wood. At Perrygrove they know that days out can be very expensive – they help you keep the cost down by providing lots of tables for picnics outdoors and under cover. They have a lovely little café but if you want to bring your own food and drink that’s fine with them. All they ask is that you use the picnic tables, not the café, and please take your rubbish home. Perrygrove is open every weekend throughout the year and daily in local school holidays. Please check their website to be sure.

New for 2015 – Toddler Tuesdays. Perrygrove is going to be open from 10am - 3pm, every Tuesday from 14th April - 20th October 2015. The entrance fee for Toddler Tuesdays is £7 per adult, which includes one complimentary hot drink and one free child, (each additional children will be charged at half the normal entrance fee). Under 3’s go free. Treasure hunts are £1.90 each. Disclaimer: This offer is not available during local school holidays, (please see the calendar on our website for these dates). Good news, Perrygrove is also available for birthday parties - what a location, the theme is already set. Open every weekend throughout the year and daily in local school holidays. The basic party package includes; • Perrygrove party invitations • Entrance to Perrygrove for the entire day • Use of party room for one hour • Party platters of food and drink for the children • Treasure hunt for each child • Tea and coffee in the party room for the adults • Birthday Express headboard For an additional cost children can drive the diesel engine, please contact us them direct for more information. “Took my 4 year old grandson to this wonderful attraction and he loved it. A special “thank you” to the truly brilliant staff who made his visit really special. Well done and don’t change it!” Malcolm G - Tripadvisor “This has got to be a great day out for young families and is so inexpensive. Just make sure everyone is full of energy before the start of what will be a fun filled energetic day out.” Mark S - Tripadvisor

Enjoy-a-Ball – Multi-Sports for Kids

Children who enjoy sports and exercise tend to stay active throughout their lives. Staying fit can help a person maintain a healthy weight and decrease the risk of serious illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Kids who are physically fit also sleep better and are more able to handle the physical and emotional challenges that a typical day presents. Sport is a place where a child can learn many skills that extend far beyond the physical benefits. These skills and benefits range from better emotional health to learning to work with others, as well as basic life skills. These concepts are a fundamental factor in each Enjoy-a-Ball class where confidence, communication and of-course FUN are paramount!

Welsh Medium Education: Why we made the choice

Cylch Meithrin nursery is for 2 & 3 year olds, with fully-qualified staff who introduce Welsh through play-based activities.

Emily Turner, Chair of Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu

Sessions are from 13:00-15:30 Mon-Fri. 3 year olds can enjoy day-long care by attending Bobl Bach in the morning and staying on for Cylch Meithrin. Sessions cost from just £7.00 and are held at Ysgol-Y-Bannau in Brecon. We also run a friendly playgroup session for babies, toddlers and parents, called Ti-a-Fi.

For more information: Tel: Jo – 07731 422611

I work at the BBC in Cardiff, and am forever struck by how much Welsh is used – not just in the programmes that we make, but in the elevator, in meetings, in the canteen. I’m in awe of the way in which the Welsh speakers here switch between two languages with such speed and dexterity. I heard the same talent in the playground at Ysgol Y Bannau, the Welsh medium school in Brecon, when the headmaster was showing me around as part of my tour of primary schools in the area, trying to decide which was best for my son Nye and later his two sisters. As a non-Welsh speaking parent, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to support my children in a Welsh medium education. However, around 90% of the school’s parents are in the same boat, and homework and home communication are geared towards that. We live in a nation that values Welsh ability in careers such as Government, education and the media, so rather than close any doors, we took the gamble.

So how is it going? It took Nye a while to feel confident speaking Welsh but now he delights in translating between the two languages. I’m now learning Welsh in an evening class for parents, my daughter Nesta is enjoying her first year at ‘big school’ and Della is loving the songs and rhymes she learns in the Cylch Meithrin nursery. The only thing I dread is the day the three of them can plot against me in Welsh!

Mae Cylch Meithrin ar gyfer plant 2 a 3 oed, gyda staff llawn gymwys sy’n cyflwyno Cymraeg drwy weithgareddau sy’n seiliedig ar chwarae. Mae sesiynau o 13:00-15:30 Llun-Gwener a gall plant 3 oed mwynhau gofal diwrnod cyfan trwy fynychu Bobl Bach yn y bore a Chylch Meithrin yn y prynhawn. Mae sesiynau’n costio o £7.00 ac yn cael eu cynnal yn Ysgol-Y-Bannau yn Aberhonddu. Rydym hefyd yn cynnal sesiwn cylch chwarae dwy awr ar gyfer babanod, plant bach a rhieni, sef Cylch Ti-a-Fi. Local History:

Everyone loves a tale of heroes and knights! Of a small army, outnumbered, winning the battle against all the odds! Well here is our tale and as all good stories start …

Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine in Brecon Cathedral (picture by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter of Brecon Cathedral)

A long time ago in a time … not far from Brecon in Garthbrengy there lived a man called Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel Fychan but because his eye had a squint people used to call him Dafydd Gam, so we shall too. Dafydd Gam had a strong character and a pretty hot temper which at times got him in to trouble but he was also very loyal and thought nothing of putting his life in danger to protect his friend. He was also a family man with a wife, two sons and a beautiful daughter named Gwladys.

Now in this time England and Wales were controlled by a few strong families who each thought they had a right to be the king. Wealth and power came from swearing allegiance to one of these families who would then give you land and titles but who also expected you to back them up when it came to a fight! Dafydd Gam had both powerful friends and powerful enemies. He didn’t mind danger and worked for the King undercover as a spy in the court of Owain Glyndwr. When he finally got found out Glyndwr was furious – he took him prisoner and took revenge burning Dafydd’s house to the ground. Somehow his 3 children escaped to England. Gwladys grew up there surrounded by power and wealth, learned the ways of the court, music, poetry and manners. In all this time however she did not forget Wales, it’s music, people, poetry and language. She longed to return home. Finally when she was old enough to be married she got her wish. She married Roger Vaughan and they lived together at his castle at Bredwardine near Hay. 16

For many years they lived happily together with their 5 children. Their home became well known for supporting the travelling bards, the arts, holding generous entertainment and looking after the poor on their lands. Now a new character enters our tale! A tall, dark, The Great Hall, Tretower Court Crown Copyright (2014) Cadw handsome prince named Henry. He was born in Monmouth to a powerful family who’s ancestors had once been Lords of Brecknock. He was not born a prince though, it was only later when his father took the throne by force that Henry (or Harry as he was called by his friends) became a prince. He suited the role well though and by the time he was 16 he was leading his own army! It was 1413 when everything started to change. King Henry IV died and Prince Harry became King Henry V. There was no time to lose, many of the nobles wanted a different king, the French were also questioning his right to the throne and putting Henry’s land in France under threat. He had to unite the powerful families and secure his land and claims in France – he had to take the fight to them! The young king sent out a call to arms. Dafydd Gam of Brecon, Sir Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine and William ap Thomas of Raglan pledged their support. John Merbury the steward of Brecon Castle signed a contract called an indenture, it promised 500 men from Carmarthen, Cardigan, Kidweli and Brecknock to serve under the command of Watkyn Lloyd of Trecastle. In June that year 1415 the men assembled. The archers with their powerful longbows, cut from yew and over 1.5m long, their arrows ready to fly over a quarter of a mile . Men-at-arms with their chain mail and armour, deadly long swords, spears and battle axes, ready to bring down the knights and take the battle to the French. They assembled with flags, drums and banners, spirits were high - they were heroes off to fight for their king. Lady Gwladys waved good bye to her father, husband and eldest son. A cold shadow may have crossed her heart and those of the families left behind. The journey would be long, muddy and dangerous. Many

would not return survive the hunger and disease let alone the mayhem of the battle with death or capture a real threat. Learn more about Brecon’s contribution to the success of the famous Battle of Agincourt The Battle of Agincourt is one of the best known events in British history. The account of Henry V’s forces defeating the much larger French army has been written up in stories, plays and poetry, since it took place in 1415. Did you know that 146 foot archers, 10 men at arms and 13 mounted archers travelled from Brecknock to Agincourt to fight? Grow Your Own At Home

Recipe: Fruit Loaf

Growing plants, herbs, fruits and vegetables is a fun and educational activity for children! From tending their own plants they can learn about the science of plants, the environment and healthy eating.

“I have tried to make hot cross buns many, many times, but they inevitably take an age and don’t end up tasting that good! For breakfast this Easter morning, I’m going to serve this really delicious fruit loaf instead, and us the time I save to relax with my kids!

Children can become easily discouraged so it’s important to make their first gardening experiences positive and fruitful! Here is a list of some plants which are easy to grow and guarantee success.

For Picky Pickers who are a bit funny about dried fruit, make it plain first, then perhaps with just raisins and gradually introduce the mixed fruit.”

Grow From Seed

Ingredients:

Lettuce: Lettuce can be grown all-year-round; simply choose from the many varieties to ensure you have a crop for every season. Seeds, once sown, should begin to sprout within 12 days.

225g dried mixed fruit

Sweet pea: Sow seeds outdoors in March or April for blooms in June and July. Pick the flowers regularly to encourage more growth.

250ml cold black tea

Flowering Plants

1 egg

Pansies & Violas: The cheery face of the pansy is a popular choice for an abundance of both summer and winter colour. Ensure you deadhead them regularly. Lavender: A familiar garden favourite, producing white, pink, blue or purple aromatic flowers during the summer months. Flowers and foliage are often used for making pot-pourri. Fruit & Vegetables Runner beans: Once plants are well established water well in dry weather otherwise the plants will not produce beans. Carrot: Sow carrot seeds thinly in a sunny area of the garden and they should germinate within 17 days. For more information contact The Old Railway Line Garden Centre on 01497 847055 or email info@ oldrailwaylinenursery.co.uk

225g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice 120g caster sugar 2 tablespoons orange marmalade

Method: 1: Measure the dried fruit into a bowl, pour in the tea and leave to soak for at least a couple of hours. I tend to leave it in the fridge overnight. 2: Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius and grease a loaf tin. 3: Measure all the other ingredients into a large bowl, add the soaked fruit and remaining liquid and stir gently until combined. 4: Pop in the oven for about an hour until the top has browned and a skewer comes out clean when you stick it in the cake. 5: Leave to stand for 15 mins and then turn out of the tin and onto a wire rack to cool. , Christopher s Book Reviews:

Gentle hands-on therapy

“Hi, I’m Christopher. I’m 11 years old and I live in Brecon. I love reading and review my favourite books at Christopher’s Corner on www.bookwormink.co.uk.” Tony Robinson‘s Weird World of Wonders: World War II by Tony Robinson This is the fifth book in Tony Robinson’s Weird of Wonders series, which are some of my favourite history books. In this book Tony concentrates on World War II, which is a period of history that really interests me. Robinson’s characters, Peewee and the Curiosity Crew, look at what it would been like to live in this time. I think this is a very good book, it is one of the best books in the series. This was a very funny and interesting book. I particularly enjoyed learning about the bomb shelters and gas masks. I don’t think I would have liked the Second World War very much! I think these books are much, much better than the Horrible History books, which my brother Tom really likes - they seem to have more facts and are much more interesting than Horrible Histories, whilst still being really funny! 5 Stars

When it comes to history, Tony Robinson is the man to read! Greek Beasts and Heroes: The Beasts in the Jar by Lucy Coats

‘The Beasts in the Jar’ is the first in the Greek Beasts and Heroes series. In this book Atticus the Greek storyteller goes off on a ship with his donkey to go to a storytelling festival on the slopes of Mount Ida near Troy. On the way he tells tales of Greek myths and legends. At the beginning of the book there’s a map showing where Atticus travels during the story. I thought this was very useful and interesting. The tales in this book include Pandora’s Box, which is the story the book is named after, and many other wonderful myths such as the tale of Icarus. It has lots of pictures in it, I like the ones of monsters! I love all Greek legends and I think this is a very good version for children, even my little brothers could understand it. We read it during our lessons at home. I was always so excited when the time came to read it. Lucy Coats is a very good writer of children’s books. I think the Greek myths are more for boys than for girls. 4.5 Stars Are you a local author who writes children’s books? Perhaps you’d like Christopher, or one of his younger brothers to review your book? If yes please get in touch. We want to support local authors, we want to encourage local children to read. In February this year an old back injury flared up. Being over 6 months pregnant, having an active toddler and working full time I needed to seek treatment. I knew nothing about Craniosacral Therapy but with the first session being offered free, I went in with an open mind to see if it was for me. Firstly I must point out you won’t find crystals, incense sticks and anything angel like in Karen’s treatment room! Whilst I lay on my side, with full support for bump, Karen placed her gentle hands onto my lower back. Instantly I felt something. It’s really hard to explain but almost a tingly sensation. Then it was as if the pain was being lifted away from my spine. After about 20-25 minutes of Karen doing her thing, she asked me to carefully get up, and then to stand against the couch so I had support. The pain to get up would normally be agony, however this pain had reduced somewhat, not gone, but reduced. I booked a second session for a week later. Over the coming week I noticed a huge difference, the pain was getting less each day, I was becoming less aware of this old back injury. Great news as my ‘bump’ was growing so the physical (and emotional) demand on my body was increased. The second session was a different experience, with the pain nearly extinct I was really able to relax. In fact at one point I think I went into a slight doze. I felt my body just become weightless, such a wonderful feeling when pregnant. For a full 20 minutes I felt the most at ease I had in a long time. Thank you Karen, see you in a couple of weeks for my next session - Lisa Marie Badham x Regular CST sessions help to maintain a healthy balance, well-being and immunity, as well as help to ward off depression, post-baby blues, musculoskeletal problems and the stress and anxiety of the impending birth. During pregnancy joints begin to soften and open often causing aches and pains in the pelvis and lumbar spine. CST can hep resolve this and balance the pelvis and uterus to ease and prevent ligament pain. It can allow the baby to find a more comfortable space to be within the abdomen - and often allows the baby to turn to find the most comfortable position for an easier birth. Babies can also be treated. The earlier the treatment post-birth the sooner the baby can recover. Most babies

respond well during the first session, some may take a little longer and will need a few sessions to fully benefit. Sessions usually last from 20 - 40 minutes for a baby and up to 1 1/2 hours for a joint mother and baby session. Case history: A baby who had a ventouse delivery, after a prolonged and difficult birth. During the first few weeks of life he was restless, almost constantly crying, unable to sleep, wouldn’t feed, he was always worried, unsettled and frightened. Karen found the bones of his skull were distorted and compressed during the delivery process and felt ‘stuck’ causing compression to the brain and delicate nerves serving the abdomen. He was very unhappy. After a few gentle sessions of CST the tension and compression in his skull and spine released, he relaxed, settled and slept well for probably the first time in his very young life. He began to feed well, sleep well and turned into the contented baby he was meant to be – his parents were quite happy too! Next issue we will talk about how Craniosacral Therapy can help with problems such as colic, middle ear infections, night terrors, learning difficulties and much more.
