Working with 14 local Children’s Nurseries and 26 local Primary Schools in the following towns and villages: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Michaelchurch Escley, Peterchurch, Sennybridge, Talgarth and Whitney-on-Wye.

Welcome to our Autumn / Winter issue of our family magazine. It tends to be the quietest issue of the three we produce each year, but I’m pleased to say this issue contains a fantastic result. Powys County Council have backed down. Cllr Arwel Jones is quoted as saying that “The communities have spoken and we have listened and are abandoning our plans for a single school on one site.” Powys County Council have further confirmed Brecon will have their new school that is most needed. They have stated that they will be investing in the future of both sites. Turn to pages 18 & 19. Next issue we hope to update you on Builth High School and Llandrindod High School. When children send in the completed word search competition we ask them what they’d like in the next issue. The little people asked for more competitions and puzzles. So that’s exactly what we’ve added more of. The children have October Half Term and the Christmas Holidays to look forward to. Not to mention the weekends between now and the New Year. The concept of this magazine is all about us sourcing all things family aimed. Be it day out ideas, activities, shopping, eating out, childcare, tuition, events, education – fingers crossed we have it all covered for you. If we don’t, tell us. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x

What makes Cylch Meithrin different from any other nursery in Brecon? Where do I start? They are open term time! No more paying for childcare while you are off on holiday! This year will see the start of their holiday club – places will be on a first come basis not contracted, so if you don’t need it you don’t have to pay for it! They are a charity! There are no profits to be made so they are able to focus on keeping the fees as low as possible. The idea is that everyone should be able to access the setting: - regardless of their background, income or language. They are registered! Their CSSIW registration means that the fees can be paid by childcare vouchers or count towards child tax credits. They have a baby signing group! Dwylo Bach is a fun, interactive and friendly. Each session is packed with songs, signing and play. It is a great way to build communication before those first words.

The sessions are led by the same dedicated staff as the setting so it’s a great way for kids to get to know them and feel confident and secure when it comes to their first day at nursery. They are run by a parent committee! This means that parents can get involved. This term Cylch Meithrin have extended their hours because parents told them that they wanted to be able to book an ‘after school’ session – so that’s what they did. Parents told them that a collection service would be useful – so they set one up, it brings children in from locations around Brecon. If you would like to know more about Dwylo Bach, the nursery setting and Welsh-medium childcare or would like to arrange a taster session please email meithrin.aberhonddu@gmail.com or message them on facebook ‘Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu’ or visit the website www.meithrinaberhonddu.wixsite.com/signup

Kubo And The Two Strings (Pg): Playing At Wyeside Arts Centre from October 7th When, after years of hiding, young boy Kubo (Art Parkinson) is discovered by his evil grandfather the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes), he must embark on a quest to find the three magical pieces of a suit of armour. Stop-motion animation studio Laika is now four for four — there’s no sign of a dud between its debut Coraline in 2009 to its latest, Kubo And The Two Strings. Kubo And The Two Strings is an original story presented as an ancient Japanese myth. Hunted from birth by his grandfather, the evil Moon King, Kubo lives in a cave with his mother. A street performer in the local village by day, he has to be back home by nightfall or his location will be revealed to the being searching for him. That happens (of course it does), which starts in motion a quest to locate the three pieces of a magical suit of armour. On the way, he hooks up with a monkey (Charlize Theron), who comes to life from a wooden ornament, and a giant beetle (Matthew McConaughey), who used to be a 10

solider in Kubo’s father’s army. It’s a beautifully animated tale that balances story with comedy and moments of effective (if light) horror. While there are noticeable shifts in tone — the seriousness of the first 15 minutes give way to increasingly broader comedy as Kubo adds companions to his quests — it has an undeniable emotion at its heart. And that’s where the film truly resonates. Empire Magazine Review: “A beautifully animated tale with an undeniable emotion at its heart”

Grandfather says of all things The silliest he’s heard Is that some children call things They’ve never seen, “absurd!” And have their doubts of true things, And won’t believe, because They say, “If you but knew things, There is no Santa Claus!” Grandfather says he knows him, And sees him every year, And Santa often shows him The playthings he brings here; He says, too, Santa told him If any girls and boys Laugh at and won’t uphold him, They’ll not get any toys! Grandfather Knows I met him! Yes really! He is like you would imagine but even more. I’ve met lots of people who pretend to be him too, but when you actually meet him you really know. He wears little round glasses which he sometimes looks over and sometimes looks through. He has a long red coat with patches and trim and those big warm boots that keep his toes warm on the sleigh! At first I didn’t think his beard was really, I’ve seen so many ‘others’. Don’t tell but just to check I gave it a little tug! He looked surprised but then he smiled, he wasn’t cross at all. He told me all about the key that opens up his book. My name is in the big big book, I asked him and he checked! On Christmas Eve he’ll be coming to my home, my stocking will be hung and I will be fast asleep … and even if I’m not I’ll be so quiet because he told me to! Father Christmas will be in Brecon Cathedral Close each weekend in December. Not to be missed!

St Mary’s Church Roof Appeal I am sure that everyone will be aware of the recent fundraising efforts carried out by St Mary’s Church Brecon for the Roof Repair Appeal. The repair work includes the replacement of roof timbers, improvements to the North and South access doors and heritage interpretation. For this reason construction works will occupy the whole of the internal area of the church. Sadly the decision had to be taken to suspend trading of the Tower Cafe for the duration of the contract. All at St Mary’s Church would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support for the Roof Appeal and the grant bodies listed below which provided significant funding towards the total project costs:

• Allchurches Trust Limited; • Brecon Beacons National Park Sustainable Development Fund; • James Pantyfedwen Foundation; • Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme; • Community Foundation in Wales

• Heritage Lottery Fund;

• Audrey Tyler Trust

• Cadw;

“We would like to thank the staff for all their hard work and commitment to the Tower Café project which has been running for the last six years and also to our many customers who have supported us over the years.” - Liz Jones, St Marys Church Brecon.

P.C.C cave in over Gwernyfed High School After 18 months (7 years if you throw in the 2009 and 2011 attempts to close the school) of fighting the local authority, on 1st September it finally gave up on implementing the plan to close our local secondary school when Arwel Jones, Education Portfolio holder in the cabinet, issued the following statement: “The communities have spoken and we have listened and are abandoning our plans for a single school on one site”. The community did speak and overwhelmingly with one voice. Over 1000 attended the public meeting in April, nearly 800 submitted written responses to the Powys consultation document, the 10 Community Councils and 2 town councils all submitted responses setting out their opposition to the local authority’s closure plans.The keys to the change of decision were evidenced in the Judicial Review in June 2015, so Powys decided not to fight it but start again to review its options. Of course it then tried to implement the plan again only to run into fired up communities. If the evidence was overwhelming in 2015 then this summer it was more so, as detailed forensic analysis of the LA plans tore them apart and still the county council ploughed on. They hung on to a hope that the regulator (Estyn) would support them and that the stress the school was under would see a drop in educational standards when the exam results came out. Estyn normally sit on the fence in these situations, not wanting to get mixed up in local politics, but had given an indication in March when they revised the Gwernyfed Status Ranking which moved it to the same as Crickhowell HS, the best school in Powys. When the analysis of the consultation process came, Estyn unequivocally condemned the Powys plans which was a devastating blow to the LA, but worse was to come. The A-Level/GCSE results were the best the school had ever had and the best in Powys.The school staff and pupils have to be congratulated on these results when surrounded by political stress and stupidity. We all held our breath and then the announcement came that Powys had changed its mind. For many people there was little in the way of a feeling of triumph, more relief. Is it all over? Not quite. Powys are saying they 18

will be bringing forward new plans, which they think will be rushed through by February next year: that’s what they think. If they bring forward more political nonsense, we will see them off. Thank you to the hundreds of people who supported the school over the last 18 months and congratulations to the school, parents, pupils, staff, governors and our communities for seeing off this threat to our school. Article supplied by John Fitzgerald

School Re-organisation proposals... There is no doubt that the last 18 months has been a period of uncertainty for Brecon High School and other schools in South Powys given the two consultations that have taken place, the first of which was aborted. For the staff, pupils and parents of Brecon High School this has certainly not been helpful at a time when we have been working hard to bring the school out of Special Measures. The start of this academic year has brought real positives for the school in regards to both the work we have done in the classroom and the recommendations made by Powys County Council following the publication of the School Re-organisation Consultation report. Firstly, the school recorded record results at GCSE with our pupils achieving 75% Level 2+ (Level 2+ is a measure of those pupils who achieve 5 or more GCSE passes at A* to C, including Maths and English or Welsh). This is one key measure which demonstrates the impact of the work done by the staff to ensure our pupils not only reach their potential and, in many cases, exceed it. It also represents a 11% improvement on the 2015 results, which were a 9% improvement on the 2014 results! Secondly, the recommendations made by Powys County Council, following the publication of the report, were big steps toward securing the vision held by the Governing Body and the school for secondary education for the Brecon community. The recommendations which have now been made are to: abandon the proposal to close both Brecon and Gwernyfed High Schools to establish a new single site school, to abandon the proposal for Post

Michaelchurch Escley Primary and Preschool - Their pupils are happy! Michaelchurch Preschool is an innovative learning environment with use of a modern hall adjacent to the school. They have a passion and commitment to outdoor learning, which is highly successful due to the beautiful setting within the heart of the rural landscape and amazing staff. They include best practices derived from a range of Early Years educational approaches that foster the innate love of learning in the individual child. The school (which is a local authority school) is small by design, enabling them to have smaller than average class sizes (around 15) and providing outstanding support for all of their pupils, both academically and emotionally. Their mixed age classes allow children to learn from each other and progress at their own pace – all abilities are catered for, and they equally support or challenge those who require it. They also offer flexi-schooling for those who wish to partially home school their children or to make their transition into school easier. 16 provision to be delivered by NPTC in Brecon and to abandon the proposal to close the two school sites from 2019/20. This also means there is to be a new proposal to Welsh Government for building a new 11- 18 school campus in Brecon, something that we desperately need, not least for our pupils, and secures secondary education for the Brecon community, including post 16 education as a school based provision. There is more work for the school to do, firstly in working alongside the County Council and Gwernyfed High School in shaping the new recommendations regarding both schools, a report on which is to be presented in February 2017, and also to ensure that the community respond, once again, to the new consultation regarding the delivery of Welsh Medium education. When the new consultation is published we will publicise this and I hope that the whole community, not just the school and parents, can make their views known.

The staff are first class, with an enthusiasm and passion for education that is absorbed by their pupils. Whether it be planning and making a time capsule, designing computer games, or making their own electricity, the children at Michaelchurch have a hands-on and exciting experience of learning that makes it all the more relevant and interesting for them. The pupils do well here – many that have joined Michaelchurch have quickly improved in their reading skills and in other areas that they might have struggled with - but most importantly, their pupils are happy! Amazing Wildlife: Ten Facts About Orangutans!

Hold on tight, because we’re about to swing through the trees to meet one of nature’s coolest creatures... the orangutan! 1. Orangutans are red-haired apes that live in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo in southeast Asia. 2. These magnificent mammals measure 1.2m to 1.5m tall and weigh up to 100kg. And they have one seriously big arm span - some males can stretch their arms 2m from fingertip to fingertip! 3. The orangutan is one of humankind’s closest relatives - in fact, we share nearly 97% of the same DNA! The word orangutan comes from the Malay words ‘orang hutan’, meaning ‘human of the forest’. 4. Orangutans spend most of their time up in the trees, where they use their long, strong arms and hook-shaped hands to climb and swing from branch to branch. Come bed time, they sleep in leafy nests high off the ground, where it’s harder for hungry enemies (such as leopards and other big cats) to get them! 5. Daytime eaters, their diet consists mostly of fruit and leaves - but they also eat nuts, bark, insects and, once in a while, bird eggs, too.

10. Sadly, orangutans are today on the endangered species list. Deforestation in the forests where they live has reduced their habitat, and illegal hunting has put populations at serious risk. That’s why we need to do all we can to help them. Swing by wwf. org.uk/adoption to find out how you can adopt an orangutan and help to protect their future!

Math-mania Puzzle You need to work the equations from left to right or top to bottom to find which numbers go in the boxes that don’t have clues.

6. Female orangutans give birth about once every eight years. Infants stay with their mother for six to seven years, until they’ve learnt the necessary skills to survive on their own. During this time, a very special bond is formed between the mother and child. 7. Unlike other great apes, such as chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos, these gangly guys don’t like to live in groups. A female will usually have a baby (or two) with her, but males like to be alone. 8. Orangutans are noisy creatures when they want to be, making loud howls and bellows that can be heard for miles around! It’s usually the males that make these calls so that they can stay out of each other’s territory. 9. These amazing apes generally have long lives - in captivity they can live for 50-60 years, and in the wild, 30-40 years. 24

“Being a parent to a 18month old, a 4 year old, and a step parent to a 12 year old, I am really looking forward to working on the next issue. It always surprises me how much is actually going on in our area - it’s just a matter of knowing about it! It will ensure I myself have family days sorted, know where the child-friendly eating places are and know where to shop for their growing needs. Now working on our 9th issue, it’s great to hear the adverts are getting response. This magazine is a great tool to market to local families.” Lisa Marie x
