School is out! The Summer Holidays are here. The children feel ecstatic. Some parents too. But many parents feel daunted (I’ve been there!) - how can we juggle work and child care? On our actual days off, how can we entertain the little people? Where are the best family days out? Don’t be daunted, embrace the Summer holidays, use this magazine as your bible - inspiration is our speciality. From holiday clubs to summer schools, kids activities to days out, children’s services to shops for little ones, support for parents to nights away for the family, reviews to competitions ... we have all these areas covered over the 44 pages of this magazine. With it being our 10th issue, it’s awesome (and a complete coincidence) to include 10 pages of What’s On listings. Remember many weekly classes will stop during the holidays, check with the organiser. There really are some terrific events over the Summer holidays. And they don’t just stop there, the What’s On listings run up until mid October. The Cariads Local team have a total of 12 children and 2 grandchildren under the age of 12 years old - we’ve already marked in our diaries a number of events. Some on our doorstep and others a bit further away to make a day of it. Any feedback, please get in touch. Our next issue will be out in October, promoting the half term through to the Christmas holidays - we welcome any topic ideas. Have a super duper Summer. Lisa Marie Badham x

Lots of games, devising and fun while putting together a show to be performed at the end of the week! We kept the ice cream plain for our ‘cake’ and just put the extras on the outside, but I think some smashed up Malteasers would work very well inside. Mix in. 6: Take the tin out of the fridge and put the ice cream mixture on top of the biscuit mixture. 7: Put the tin in the freezer for at least an hour so the ice cream refreezes completely again. 8: Remove the tin from the freezer and take the ‘cake’ out of the tin. 9: Let your Picky Pickers help decorate with whatever ‘extras’ you fancy, let your imagination run wild! But remember to work quickly as the ice cream will start to melt. Serve immediately! 12

Brecon’s Princess Killed! Amser maith an ol or once upon a time… as all good stories start, there lived a King, King Brychan Brycheiniog! His kingdom had its capital at Talgarth, the Beacons as it’s high places and the Usk flowing through it’s heart. As time went on King Brychan was blessed with many children but our tale is about just one – Eluned! These were wild times where kingdom fought kingdom and where family duty came before all else. The kingdom of Brycheiniog sat between the mighty Deheubarth lands and those of Morgannwg and Gwent. Alliances were made and the balance of power shifted. A bride and her dowry was a symbol of power, respect and conquest. Unfortunately for Eluned she was not only beautiful but as a princess she had status and this made her valuable as a wife, Eluned, however, really wasn’t that interested in getting married off whether for love or for politics! Well one day there came another suiter but this one was not going to be so easily put off. Not only did he not share any of Eluned’s ideas or beliefs but he didn’t see that her opinion on the matter was all that important! Eluned was distraught, the only solution she could see was to leave her father’s house and try to find shelter elsewhere in the kingdom.

TALGARTH FESTIVAL OF THE BLACK MOUNTAINS SATURDAY 26TH & SUNDAY 27TH AUGUST 2017 OFFICIAL OPENING 12 MIDDAY

A FUN FILLED WEEKEND FOR ALL THE FAMILY

Eluned set out, travelling light, alone and in disguise. She headed first to Llanddew but the local people were unkind and suspicious of the young girl so they drove her out. From there Eluned travelled to Llanfilo; it was risky as it took her closer to her father’s house. Again the people of the village turned her out, this time accusing her of being a thief. Then she tried to find shelter in Llechfaen but no-one would take her in and she ended up sleeping on the road curled up under a hedge. Despairing of people, she made her way to the wooded hill we know as Slwch Tump. All she wanted was to find a quiet place, away from people where she could live alone, study and pray. She took a chance and went to see the Lord who owned the land. She expected more cruelty but this time it was different. The Lord at the manor took pity of her, allowing her to stay on his land and gave her food. She made herself a small hut and for a short while found peace and happiness. It was not to last. The Prince was angry and felt he had been made a fool of. His rage became hatred and he set out for revenge! Come along to the Cathedral on the 1st of August to hear what happened next! Children’s activities, talks and presentations, Guided walks to Eluned’s well, Hog Roast and entertainment!

Contact Details: Sue Lewis, 07891 890099 or susan.lewis198@btinternet.com Entrance to the Festival is free, although some events may have a small charge.

Explore nature’s playground this summer Caring for the countryside and keeping it accessible is a vital part of the conservation work carried out by the National Trust, and the Brecon Beacons & Monmouthshire team does just that. From footpath maintenance’ looking after our beautiful meadows and woodlands, to providing exciting opportunities to explore the great outdoors, there are plenty of adventures for everyone. The Sugar Loaf and Skirrid near Abergavenny, the locations for this summer’s Wild Wednesdays, provide the perfect escape and an ideal location to get closer to nature. With panoramic views from both summits that stretch across to Pen y Fan on a clear day, climbing a mountain can provide a real sense of achievement. In contrast, the tranquil surroundings of St Mary’s Vale on the Sugar Loaf and Pant Skirrid Wood provide a haven just waiting to be explored. The first Wild Wednesday of the summer takes place on the Skirrid, featuring an abundance of nature activities as part of the National Trust’s 50 things to do

before you’re 11 ¾ campaign. Join our rangers and the kids can gradually tick off each activity on their list from climbing a huge hill to building a den and creating some wild art. A great place to visit and play Quackers is a family play centre, situated close to Newbridge-On-Wye, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 6HR (just off the A483 & A470). Come rain or shine, Quackers is a great place to visit and play with focus on fun, fitness and fresh air. At Quackers, children don’t have all the fun, adults are allowed on all the play equipment too! Indoors, they have 2 drop slides, an astro slide, ball pools and a toddler area - plus lots more exciting equipment for play. Their 5 star hygiene rated Cowshed CafÊ serves a wide selection of home cooked meals and snacks, and upstairs they have two themed party rooms and a larger room for parties, meetings or small conferences. Outside, there is a large sandpit, a track with pedal go-karts, and a nature walk round the lake where you can see water birds or just sit and enjoy the views and the sunshine. There are also picnic

benches so that you can enjoy your picnic or food purchased from the cafe. During very busy periods Quackers may regretfully have to limit your stay in the play area to 2 hours, for safety reasons. However, you can continue to use the cafe or the outside play equipment, in addition to your 2 hours in the play area, if this is the case. At other times you will be allowed to stay for as long as they are open and as long as you have the energy!

REVIEW

Want to Canoe? provide paddling fun for everyone!

Based just outside Hay on Wye, Want to Canoe? provide paddling fun for everyone; they can cater for anything from a beginner wanting a guided tour for a couple of hours, or a family fancying exploring the river for a day, to an experienced group on a week’s holiday. My very-excited 7 year old son, Henry, and I were booked in for 10am, and were pleased to discover free parking on the site, which is only 5 minutes walk from Hay itself: perfect for a little stroll into town after your paddle. We were greeted by Clare and Aubrey, the very welcoming owners, and set about the all important medical consent forms, which need to be filled in before you set off. These can even be printed off from Want to Canoe?’s website and completed before you arrive if you want to save time. Our canoe was all set up for us at the edge of the River Wye, and we were fitted with buoyancy aids and paddles before being taken through the safety aspects of canoeing on the river. We were provided with water proof maps and very handy photos of various points along the route so that we could always be sure of where we were. Henry was also given some laminated wildlife sheets so he could see what he could spot along the journey. He was sure he saw a kingfisher at one point! We were especially lucky to have had absolutely glorious weather for our trip, but I think we would have had a wonderful time even if it had been absolutely pouring down. Being forced to take your time and go with the flow of the river, really

allows you appreciate just how beautiful our area is, and being on the river means you see it from a completely different perspective. We did our 5.5 miles at a leisurely pace, stopping to skim stones at one point, and stopped at The Boat Inn at Whitney-on-Wye. We called the centre and enjoyed an orange juice while we waited to be picked up and driven back. Henry was made a big fuss of by the staff and I think the highlight of his day was being presented with a medal for his canoeing. He’s been wearing it ever since! Clare and Aubrey pride themselves on their customer service, which they believe sets them apart, and it certainly seemed that nothing was too much trouble for them, and they really were happy to cater trips to suit whatever their customers wanted. Dogs are welcome; something I’m sure our chocolate Labrador will appreciate. It certainly isn’t a one size fits all approach and would be especially good for families. Everything about our trip was very well organised, the equipment we used was great, and we felt in very safe hands throughout. Call Clare and Aubrey on 01497 820604 to hire canoes or book a guided tour. Canoeing is such a fantastic way to explore our beautiful area and get some surprisingly relaxing exercise, and with Want to Canoe?, it really couldn’t be easier! Review written by Laura Williams

Amazing Wildlife:

Ten Facts About Honey Bees!

Calling all budding – or should we say buzz-ing – young naturalists! Find out all about one of our planet’s most fascinating insects – the Honey Bee! 1. Honey bees are super-important pollinators for flowers, fruits and vegetables. This means that they help other plants grow! Bees transfer pollen between the male and female parts, allowing plants to grow seeds and fruit. 2. Honey bees live in hives (or colonies). The members of the hive are divided into three types: Queen, Workers and Drones. 3. What are these buzzing bugs most famous for? Delicious honey! But did you know they produce honey as food stores for the hive during winter? Luckily for us, these efficient little workers produce 2-3 time more honey than they need, so we get to enjoy the tasty treat, too! 4. If the queen bee dies, workers will create a new queen by selecting a young larva (the newly hatched baby insects) and feeding it a special food called “royal jelly“. This enables the larva to develop into a fertile queen. 5. Honey bees are fab flyers. They fly at a speed of around 25km per hour and beat their wings 200 times per second! 6. Each bee has 170 odorant receptors, which means they have one serious sense of smell! They use this to communicate within the hive and to recognise different types of flowers when looking for food. 7. The average worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of honey. 8. The queen can live up to five years. She is busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day! 9. Honey bees are also brilliant boogiers! To share information about the best food sources, they perform their ‘waggle dance’. When the worker returns to the hive, it moves in a figure-of-eight and waggles its body to indicate the direction of the food source. Cool, huh? 10. Sadly, over the past 15 years, colonies of bees have been disappearing, and the reason remains unknown. Referred to as ‘colony collapse disorder’, billions of Honey bees across the world are leaving their hives, never to return. In some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared! 24

Book Review: The Summer Reading Challenge Every year Powys Libraries celebrates and encourages children reading by taking part in the national Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is Animal Agents, featuring characters exclusively designed by award-winning children’s illustrator, Tony Ross and Brecon Library is planning all sorts of fun activities for their own amateur agents! At the heart of the Challenge is children choosing and sharing any books – in any format – that they like. The Challenge is a great time to share and talk about books as a family. Sitting down with a book, newspaper or magazine sets a good example to children – they will copy you.

Mr Stink By David Walliams The story is about a tramp, and a little girl called Chloe who helps him and lets him live in her garden shed, even though her mum is stuck up and doesn’t like tramps. This book is really funny, I especially like the part when Chloe and her sister dress him up to see the Prime minster, and he had a bath in their pond. It is really sad as well when you find out why Mr Stink lives on the street, and what happened to his wife and unborn baby. Mum and me both cried at the end. By Halle Matthews (Age 9)

It’s totally free to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge and always will be – all your children need to do to join in the fun is to sign up at your local library and read six library books of their choice to complete the Challenge! They can be any books they like – novels, fact books, joke books, e-books or audio books, they all count. Every child starts off with a collector folder to record their reading and as they finish each book, they’ll get special stickers to help the Animal Agents crack their case and catch the crook! In addition, everyone who completes the challenge will get their own medal and certificate, and the library will be holding a party at the end of the summer to celebrate the end of the Challenge and all their wonderful readers. Brecon Library runs a weekly Storytime for under 5s (Every Tuesday at 11), a monthly Lego Club (The first Saturday of the month, 11-12), and, during the summer holidays, a weekly Create and Craft session (Every Thursday, 2-3). They’re also looking for young volunteers aged 14-25 to help them with their Animal Agents events and to assist young readers. Find out more and pick up a recruitment pack at the library, or email patricia.thomas@powys.gov.uk. If you’re a grownup looking to volunteer with them, for any role, the same information applies. For information on activities in other Libraries visit the Powys Children’s Library Service page on Facebook (www.facebook. com/buddingreaders/) or visit your local Library.

An inspiring crucible for the future of the Welsh language Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu opening from 8am till 5.30pm Monday to Friday is a real boon for parents in the Brecon area. They provide child care for children aged 2 until school starting age during term time and for children aged 2 to 11 during school holidays. This will be the first full-time Welsh medium preschool provision within the area. Previously, three-year-olds could access Welsh medium preschool education during school hours and two year olds during the afternoon, making it out of reach for many working parents including The Bradburn family.

Eyecare for all the family

Scott (father of Otis) says “We know the benefits of introducing Welsh at a young age, particularly as we are an English speaking family and are absolutely delighted that Otis will now be able to receive his education through the medium of Welsh from the age of 3 particularly in view of the council’s decision to increase the school age. We are also confident that this will enable the transition into school much easier for him”. The benefit of the 12 1/2 hours funded early years at the site means the provision is affordable to parents and removes many barriers to those wishing to bring their children up bilingually. “For us, the expansion of this service is a really positive outcome to the council’s decision to change the school age. The fact that there will be a holiday club in addition, really brings the Welsh provision in Brecon in line with what’s available in English and demonstrates the strength of the local community supporting Welsh at a time of uncertainty”, adds Scott Bradburn. There is an open evening planned where both current and prospective parents will have the opportunity to meet the staff and familiarise themselves with the outstanding facilities.

01497 821260

Scott says “Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu is an inspiring crucible for the future of the Welsh language and I am personally thrilled Otis is set to benefit from this”.
