Hello Well, Autumn is well and truly here! The nights are drawing in, and I’m craving hot chocolate and pumpkin soup! Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB Email: lisamarie@cariadslocal.co.uk Website: www.cariadslocal.co.uk

Working with 13 local Children’s Nurseries and 28 local Primary Schools in the following towns and villages: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Michaelchurch Escley, Peterchurch, Sennybridge, Staunton-on-Wye, Talgarth and Whitney-on-Wye.

We’ll all miss the sunshine, but our local area is absolutely glorious at this time of year, and there’s still plenty going on to keep the younger members of the family out of mischief! If you fancy getting out and about, try the National Trust’s Wild Wednesdays, or book a riding lesson at Tregoyd Mountain Riders (see our review on page 17). If the weather turns against you, why not stay in and try making one of our recipes? The Zombie Fingers (recipe on page 14) are sure to go down well for Halloween! How about letting off some steam at one of our local indoor play centres? The Playbarn makes great coffee for you to relax with while the little ones go crazy! Or Quakers Indoor Playcentre lets the grown ups play as well! I was very excited to hear that the Hay Winter Festival is going to be even bigger and better this year. Make sure you book your tickets early! We’ve also got some fab suggestions of places to take the kids in the lead up to Christmas. Will you have breakfast with Santa at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, meet his naughty Elf, Clang, at Brecon Cathedral, or perhaps join him at Big Pit or for a ride on Brecon Mountain Railway? And don’t forget, the festive season wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the pantomime! Enjoy, Laura Williams x

The festive spirit is already flowing through The Old Railway Line Garden Centre where Christmas is ‘full steam ahead!’ The award winning garden centre, in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, always impresses in the build-up to Christmas through a number of events and magical experiences for children. Manager, Katie Eckley said; “Renowned throughout mid Wales, south Wales and Herefordshire, our grotto experience is packed with festive magic, including real life reindeer and a short magical walk before meeting Santa, having a chat and receiving a suitable toy and delicious sweets. Our grotto is built at the heart of our exciting ‘bigger and better’ Christmas department this year which is very exciting. “On selected days throughout December our Breakfast and Afternoon Tea with Santa experiences offer something different to the traditional grotto visit. Children, parents and grandparents can enjoy a delicious meal in the Railway Restaurant before Santa personally visits each table, distributes presents and speaks to each child individually. “Santa’s Grand Arrival is one of our most popular events every year and is planned for the evening of Friday 24th November at 6.30pm. Santa will pull up outside the garden centre on his sleigh before everyone who attends enjoys a fun disco and bouncy castle. There will also be a festive menu to enjoy in the Railway Restaurant!” For more information please contact the Old Railway Line directly by calling 01497 847055 or visiting their website www.oldrailwaylinegc.co.uk.

Ingredients: 250g stoned dates 100g dark chocolate, chopped 3 tbsp smooth peanut butter 3 tbsp porridge oats Flaked toasted almonds

Method: 1: Tip all the ingredients except the almonds into a food processor and pulse until you have a rubbly looking mixture. 2: Line a tray with baking parchment and mould the mixture into fingers, then lay them on the tray. REVIEW

“A wonderful lesson” at Tregoyd Mountain Riders

We had no trouble finding Tregoyd Mountain Riders thanks to their very good signposting, and the setting was absolutely beautiful, despite the very grey sky! The Centre has been running since 1958, when it was started by the current owner’s parents, and is based at Lower Cwmcadarn Farm. The boys were greeted enthusiastically by the four dogs and the instructors, Carol and Holly. They were fitted for riding hats before being taken to meet their horses. The horses were led into the paddock, and the children were shown how to mount them and how to adjust the stirrups. They were taught how to hold the reins and were taken through stopping the horses, how to make them walk and turn, and then how to trot. They even attempted a rising trot, which they found very exciting! Carol and Holly were both brilliant with the children. They were so patient, and took great care in matching them to their horses, including calling me a couple of days before the lesson to check the ages

of my children and their weights, as well as if any of them were nervous of horses and what riding ability, if any, they had. The horses were sure-footed and knew exactly what was expected of them! All four were very calm, and had wonderful personalities. The centre offers all sorts of options for all levels of riding expertise, specialising in trekking over the trails on the Black Mountains. Children can begin learning from the age of 4 or 5. The centre offers a 20 minute lead rein around the Pony Paddock, which sounds like a lovely, gentle introduction. Once they’ve been learning for a while, there’s the opportunity for children to work towards recognised riding awards and take part in competitions, as well as just having fun. The boys had a wonderful lesson. It was so relaxed, but they learnt an awful lot, and felt really proud of themselves. Please call 01497 847351 or e-mail info@tregoydriding. co.uk for more information or to book a ride. Review written by Laura Williams

Outside, there is a large sandpit, a track with pedal go-karts, and a nature walk round the lake where you can see water birds or just sit and enjoy the views and the sunshine. There are also picnic

benches so that you can enjoy your picnic or food purchased from the cafe. During very busy periods Quackers may regretfully have to limit your stay in the play area to 2 hours, for safety reasons. However, you can continue to use the cafe or the outside play equipment, in addition to your 2 hours in the play area, if this is the case. At other times you will be allowed to stay for as long as they are open and as long as you have the energy!

Amazing Wildlife: Ten Facts About Zebras!

1. There are three species of zebra: Grevy’s, mountain and plains, the latter of which is by far the most common. The plains zebra is divided into six subspecies; the mountain into two. 2. Zebras are very fast-moving animals, and can reach speeds of up to 65kmph when galloping across the plains. This is just fast enough to outpace predators such as lions. Foals can run with the herd within a few hours of birth. 3. A zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70 per cent of incoming heat, preventing the animal from overheating in the African sun. 4. It’s thought that a zebra’s stripes serve to help camouflage the animal in long grass, and distract predators. Recent research also shows that a zebra’s stripes may have evolved to keep biting insects at bay - the monochrome pattern seems to throw off the visual systems of flies. 5. A zebra’s stripes act like an equine fingerprint each individual’s pattern is unique. Foals recognise their mothers by the pattern of their stripes, as well as by scent and call. 6. While Grevy zebra society tends to be fairly open, that of plains and mountain zebras is more tight-knit, with the animals living in harems of up to six breeding females and their young, with a dominant male. Each female has a place in the hierarchy. These groups are so close that if a predator injures one individual, fellow members will circle it and attempt to scare the intruder away with their teeth and hooves.

between the Serengeti in Tanzania and Kenya’s Masai Mara in a constant search of food and water. 10. In Ancient Rome, Grevy’s zebra were trained to pull chariots at Roman circuses under the alias ‘hippotigris’ (‘horse-tiger’).

7. Like horses, zebras sleep standing up, and usually only when in the safety of a group. 8. For protection, zebra groups often come together in large herds, regularly mixing with other grazers such as wildebeest. As well as providing more eyes and ears to look out for danger, a large herd is confusing to a predator, making it harder to single out individual prey. 9. One of the most extraordinary phenomena in the natural world is the annual 1,800-mile migration of millions of zebra, blue wildebeast and other antelope 22
