Planning your Summer Holidays starts right here! The team have been busy sourcing businesses, services and events / classes that appeal to families. We’ve done the hard graft, you just sit back with a brew and read this issue cover to cover. Of course, with the little people around there will be lots of interruptions, “Mum can you wipe my bum?”, “Dad can play lego with me?”, “Mum... Dad... I’ve spilt something!” - well if they are anything like my children! Are you a parent that worries about our environment? About how our acts can damage the world our children grow up in? As NOT YET ADULTS, how can you do your bit to save the only world we have? It’s simple - BE THE CHANGE! 1. Plastic free Fridays! 2. Plastic free lunches! Sandwiches/snacks/trail-mix/fruit salad/yoghurt in reusable containers.Water, juice or other drinks in a reusable and resealable bottle or thermos flask, filled at home from a bulk container. Whole fruits without packaging. Durable cutlery that is designed to be washed and reused plus a washable cloth napkin. 3. Make a list of everything you use, made out of plastic and think of ways you can replace them with natural, biodegradeable or reusable options. 4. Speak to your teachers about school field trips to a recycling facility or in-class activities that teach children about plastic pollution. 5. Remember the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and apply them to everything you can think of, including toys and school supplies. 6. Plastic free birthday parties: Similar to plastic free

lunches, using reuseable cutlery etc, you could get together to craft their own birthday decorations, party hats and invitations! 7. Participating within the Local Community: Local communities are always in need of an extra pair of hands to help around. You can participate in local events such as assisting with cleaning up local areas, animal rehabilitation or planting seeds. 8. Involve your parents! Until you can start making decisions to change the course of the world, you can steer the decision makers! FREE Brecknock Play Network Summer Play Sessions

We were very lucky to receive funding from the Brecon Co-op Community Fund to enable us to run these play sessions over the summer holidays. Sessions are for children 8-12 years and are open access which means children are able to come and go as they please. Younger children are welcome to attend but must be supervised by a responsible adult/carer. Please wear old clothes as we do like a bit of messy play.

Talgarth Festival 2018 August Bank Holiday Weekend, 25th and 26th August 2018. Organisation of the 2018 Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains is now well underway. This year we are working towards a change in the Festival, to bring together more local talent and to showcase more local businesses. Of course, some of our regular attractions will run, our Fun Dog Show, run by ex-RAF police dog handlers will be held in Jacqui’s field, the live animals and craft demonstrations in the market – hopefully with our regular attending sheep shearer with a display over the weekend. Our children’s crafts will be back in Annie’s Garden, providing some crafts for young children, with the infamous Teddy Bears’ Picnic returning on the weekend. The Duck Race will again create a stir, with so many people lining the sides of the River Enig to watch over 1000 ducks racing to the finish line, with cash prizes for the first 8 winning ducks and a booby prize for the last duck home, this is certainly an event worth watching! As usual, we will have stalls up Bronllys Road, in the Great Barns Car Park and in the Town Hall, all full of produce, local talented artists and local businesses all waiting to showcase their products to you. We have some regular stallholders returning to us, plus we will have new stallholders this year – we cannot wait to see what they have in store for you!

This year, we have decided this year to keep the Festival event compact, within the Market, Bronllys Road, the Church Hall, the Town Hall, Square area, not forgetting St Gwendoline’s church with its flower display and Sunday morning Church Service and Talgarth Fire Station with is annual open day. As we are still organising our Festival, we plan to get more details to you regarding events as soon as we can. We are hoping that the Bell Gardening Club will host its Gardening Show and competition in the pool room, behind the Bell Hotel – as this, again, is an event not to be missed, if you would like any details, please contact me. We do have a few events planned over the next few months and will update you via posters around the town and on Facebook, everyone is welcome to these events and without fundraising and everyone’s support we wouldn’t be able to hold the Talgarth Festival every year.

The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, located between Brecon and Hayon-Wye, host a different workshop for children every Wednesday of the school holidays. Event Manager, Matthew Lewis explained: “We introduced our popular Wild Wednesday event series a few years ago to give parents a regular event to bring their children to during school holidays. We offer a wide range of crafts and activities to entertain children and offer a sociable gathering for parents and children whilst away from school. “This summer we have an exciting schedule of Wild Wednesdays including ‘Miniature Gardens’, ‘Circus Skills’ and a ‘Magic Show’ from Carl John Entertainment! Each week we have a different workshop combining craft activities, fun activities and special guests. Don’t forget to book though as sessions usually sell out quickly!” The workshops cost just £4 per child (£6 for the Magic Show) including all materials needed to take part. Royal Welsh Show: 23-26 July 2018 The pinnacle event in the British agricultural calendar, the Royal Welsh Show, will be held on 23 - 26 July at the showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells. Every year, the livestock classes attract thousands of entries from far and wide promising a popular and exciting four-days of competitions. Along with the fantastic livestock and great shopping the show provides something to interest everyone through its wide range of activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, food and drink and a 12-hour programme each day of exciting entertainment, attractions and displays. Join their Moon Walk – climb Pen y Fan as the sun sets, watch the moon rise as you descend by torchlight, and with the Brecon Mountain Rescue team out in force, you’ll be in good hands! Mischief Makers at Brecon Library! All parents know that children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays - if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million UK children into libraries each year, keeping up their reading skills and confidence. It encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday, whatever books they like - fiction, fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books, eBooks just as long as they are borrowed from the library. They receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there’s a certificate and medal for everyone who completes the Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge 2018 is called Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children’s title The Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary. The Summer Reading Challenge launches on Saturday 7th July in Powys Libraries.

6 Weeks of Summer Fun at Eastnor Eastnor Castle, near Ledbury, is gearing up for another fun-packed Summer Holiday programme again this year as families are preparing to entertain their children during the six weeks off school. The castle and grounds will be open every Sunday through to Thursday from 22nd July until 30th August, with an event included in the entrance price on every open day. Activities will include some firm family favourites such as Circus Skills and the Dinosaur Show, as well as a brand new ‘Survival Skills’ event where children can channel their inner Bear Grylls! David Littlewood, General Manager at Eastnor Castle said “We always look forward to hosting our Summer Holiday event programme as so many of our visitors return year after year to have fun with their family and friends. As all of our Summer Holiday events are included in our admission price, we feel a day out at Eastnor Castle is real value for money. Recipes Frozen banana lollies

Pineapple & pork skewers

Prep: 20 Mins Cook: 5 - 10 Mins Makes 4 Prep: 10 Mins • Cook: 5 Mins • Makes 4

Ingredients:

• 400g pork fillet

• 2 bananas • 4 large strawberries • 100g natural yogurt • 200g dark chocolate • 1 tbsp hundreds and thousands You will also need: • 4 wooden lolly sticks

Method: 1: Peel the bananas and trim off the very ends if you’d like them neater.Then crop them each into 4 equalsized chunks. Thread a strawberry onto each lolly stick first, then push on the pieces of banana. 2: When all your banana pops are made, lay them on a baking tray and put in the freezer, uncovered for 1 hour. 3: Put the yoghurt into a tall glass or jug then dip each banana pop into the yogurt to coat (avoiding the strawberries), then place back onto the tray to refreeze until set. 4: Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second bursts (stirring after each blast) then pour into a mug. Dip the end piece of each banana pop in the chocolate then sprinkle over the hundreds and thousands. 5: The chocolate should set pretty much instantaneously, but you can keep them in the freezer until you want to serve them for up to 1 week.

• 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar • 60ml cider vinegar • 1 tsp fish sauce • ½ small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks (or use ready prepped fresh pineapple, drained well) • 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into squares (optional) • 4 spring onions, trimmed and cut into 4 equal lengths • Small bunch coriander, chopped (optional) • Cooked rice or pitta, to serve

Method: 1: Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool.Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce. 2: Heat the barbecue. If you are using coals, wait until they turn white. If you are indoors, heat a griddle pan. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and spring onion. 3: Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling). Sprinkle with coriander, if you like, then serve with rice or slide into pitta breads.

Eyecare for all the family

Squilver Scribbles By T&T Harker Author Tess Harker writes her books on Disgwylfa Hill, which is on the Welsh border. The word ‘Squilver’ is how the locals say it. Tess has been writing for 5 years and has a few more books scribbled down, including Pegasus the Pony, Camo Fox, and Flutterby the Butterfly. When Tess is not writing she is farming. She is inspired by her observations during the working day. Amazed to see the different personalities of the animals develop as they grow. Her hope in writing these books is to try and make farming more relateable to those not from the countryside, whilst still being familiar to farming children. As a child Tess struggled with reading but found reading in rhyme made it easier. This is what inspired her to write in the rhyme way - to encourage less confident readers.

All of the 5 books are illustrated by Tess’s brother. “These books were great as bedtime stories for my 3 and 6 year old. My sister and her family live on a farm so the characters certainly captured my children. At the end of each book there is a photo of the real life character, this is a very nice touch which Otis and Cariad really liked and asked lots of questions about. Amazing Wildlife: Ten Giraffe Facts!

1. Giraffes are found in the dry savannas of Africa, where they roam among the open plains and woodlands. 2. Well known for their long necks, these gentle giants are the world’s tallest living land animals. An adult male can grow to around 5.5m – that’s taller than three adult humans! 3. A giraffe’s height is helpful for keeping a look out for predators, such as lions and hyenas. Their excellent eyesight allows them to spot hungry beasts from far away, too. 4. Herbivores, giraffes only eat plants. Their favourite grub is the acacia tree, and they use their long necks to reach the leaves and buds in the treetops. Their long tongues (which grow to a whopping 53cm!) also help them pull down leaves growing way up high. 5. And boy do these guys have an appetite! They spend most of their time eating, and can guzzle up to 45kg of leaves and twigs a day! 6. Whilst they may eat a lot, giraffes don’t drink much water. This is because they get most of their water from their leafy meals, and only need to drink once every few days. 7. Giraffes are very social animals and roam around in groups. These groups, called towers, typically have around 15 members led by an adult male.The other members are females and young males. 8. To see who is stronger, males (called bulls) fight by butting their long necks and heads. This is known as “necking“. These fights aren’t usually dangerous, and end when one bull admits defeat and walks away. 9. Female giraffes give birth standing up. The result? Newborns are welcomed to the world with a 1.5m drop to the ground! Ouch! But these infants are quick to get on their feet – within 30 minutes they are standing, and only hours later they”re able to run with their mothers. 10. In the wild these beautiful creatures live for around 25 years. In captivity they live longer, and have been known to reach 40 years old. 20
