For some time in England we’ve been entitled to the 30 hours funded childcare. Since September 2017 it has been piloted in parts of Wales. Come January 2019 it will be available at Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu and Little Stars Pre Schools (Hay and Clyro settings) - please get in touch with the providers to find out more details and to make sure your child qualifies. My son Otis is mad on trains. So as soon as this issue goes to print I’ll be contacting both the Gwili Railway and Brecon Mountain Railway. For the less spooked passengers, try the Ghost Express with Gwili Railway! Then in the run up to Christmas you could meet Santa, both steam trains offer a great family activity that the little ones will adore. At your local Library you’re never too young (or too old!) to get a Library card. Even better, if you’re under four years old, you can be registered for the Bookstart Book Crawl, where you get stickers and certificates for each library visit, plus a free book after your first 6 visits! Read more on page 10.

Why choose Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu? They are the only full-time Welsh language nursery in the Brecon area. Set within the grounds of Ysgol y Bannau, they offer childcare for 2-4 year olds in two spacious rooms with dedicated outdoor space and a large car park for ease of drop off/pick up. Flexibility - Flexibility for busy parents is essential when selecting a nursery for your child. Cylch Meithrin understand the importance of flexibility. They offer a range of hours to suit your needs; half days, school days, full days, including a dedicated breakfast club, an after-school club and even a bilingual holiday club (which older siblings can also attend even if they don’t attend the school). They charge in small blocks of hours - this provides a more tailored and affordable service for parents looking to fit childcare around their busy lives. Affordability - Affordability is crucial. Cylch Meithrin are a not-for-profit organisation set up to provide Welsh learning opportunities to young children, and as such they offer the most affordable rates in the Brecon area. Benefit from Government funded hours - They are providers of Foundation Phase - 12.5 funded hours per week, term-time, for 3-4 year olds. They will also be providers of the 30 funded hours of childcare per week for 48 weeks of the year for 3-4 year olds. Parents living within the Gwernyfed High School catchment area will be the first to pilot this from January 2019 with the rest of Powys being rolled out in September 2019. Cultural enrichment - There is so much to be said for providing children with the opportunity to grow their minds from an early age. Their play-based 2
learning and focus on the outdoors is delivered through the Welsh medium, immersing your child in the language and giving them valuable language acquisition skills for the future. A family environment - There are various opportunities for the nursery to interact and engage with the wider Ysgol y Bannau community, through special assemblies, sports day and end of year concerts. Cylch Meithrin is an integral part of the school family and if you decide to continue your child’s journey with a Welsh medium education, the transition will appear seamless and your child will progress smoothly and happily into the school. Spaces available now… Cylch Meithrin have space to grow and places available now! Their dedicated and highly qualified staff team are ready to show you round the nursery and answer any questions you might have. Please contact Elisa Parry, Setting Manager, on 07976 472 842.

Mother to mother support - breastfeeding Brecon BIBS meets every Thursday at The Muse in Brecon (10am-12noon) to support mums who need help establishing breastfeeding or at any point in their breastfeeding journey. Their trained peer supporters offer friendly, non-judgemental support and information to help mums achieve their breastfeeding goals. They also loan out books and equipment. You don’t have to be experiencing problems to come along, many mums just come each week for a friendly chat with other breastfeeding mums. Because they have all breastfed their children they understand the problems mums face, especially in the early days. Support is also available via their Facebook page (join at facebook.com/ groups/BreconBIBS). Even in the middle of the night it’s likely someone else will be awake feeding and at the very least be able to offer words of encouragement, and it’s often very reassuring to know someone else has experienced a similar problem and overcome it. Contact Brecon BIBS on email: bbibs@hotmail.co.uk and via their website www.breconbibs.co.uk.

1: Melt the sugar, golden syrup and butter in a saucepan, then bubble for 1-2 mins. Leave to cool for about 10 mins. 2: Tip the flour, bicarbonate of soda and spices into a large bowl. Add the warm syrup mixture and the egg, stir everything together, then gently knead in the bowl until smooth and streak-free. The dough will firm up once cooled. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line two baking trays with baking parchment. 4: Roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin, then cut out gingerbread people with a cutter. Re-roll the excess dough and keep cutting until it’s all used up. 5: Lift the biscuits onto the trays and bake for 10-12 mins, swapping the trays over halfway through cooking. Leave to cool on the trays for 5 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Use the icing to decorate the biscuits as you wish, and stick on sweets for buttons. Leave to dry for 1-2 hrs. Think your new arrival is too young for a library card? Babies are never too young to enjoy a book! Spending time close to your baby, face to face, is not only a great way to encourage their developing eyes, but also helps you to feel close to each other. At your local Library you’re never too young (or too old!) to get a Library card. Even better, if you’re under four years old, you can be registered for the Bookstart Book Crawl, where you get stickers and certificates for each library visit, plus a free book after your first 6 visits! Bookstart is a charity who (like libraries) believes it’s never too early to start sharing books, stories and rhymes. They make sure that every child in Wales has their own books at home and support families reading together. Brecon Library was thrilled to be one of the libraries taking part in Bookstart Cymru’s recent pilot distributing the ‘Baby’s First Shapes’ booklet, and are even more pleased to share that now ALL libraries in Powys will be able to gift this booklet to families & babies (up to 8 weeks old) visiting the library. What’s special about the ‘Baby’s First Shapes’ booklet? Have you ever noticed that babies are drawn to books with black and white pictures? It’s partly because new-borns start off life seeing the world in shades of grey! Although they don’t always tempt grownups, high contrast images appeal to those very young babies whose eyes are still developing and who are learning to focus on the world around them - black and white books with simple lines and bold patterns are easier for babies to see as the bold images stand out in an otherwise rather blurry world! When you’re reading with your baby, take the time to talk about the pictures - describe shapes or patterns. You can even take your baby’s hand and gently trace circles, squares, wavy lines – anything! It helps your baby learn more about what they’re seeing, but most importantly, they love hearing your voice.

Book Review:
Cooking and nutrition for beginners at St. John’s Centre St. John’s Centre can now offer two entry-level cooking courses for adults or school-leavers.
By Adele Nozedar I love camping and doing survival stuff, so I thought this book looked really cool. This book has 52 things to eat using wild plants. The author does explain that you have to be very careful about what you pick and where, and you need to be sure you’ve got the right plant! I always get my Daddy to check. It’s not too big, which means I can take it in my rucksack with me when I go for a walk, and maybe find something for my tea! I think this book is good for anyone who likes being outside and finding out about awesome things. My favourite bit was about berries, because
”
I like to pick blackberries and make a crumble.
I learnt lots from this book, like how to eat raw nettles and how to make dandelion truffles! I would give it 5 stars! By Henry Williams (Age 9)

Christmas is Coming… The festive spirit is already flowing through The Old Railway Line Garden Centre where Christmas is in full flow! The award winning garden centre, in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, always impresses in the build-up to Christmas through a number of events and magical experiences for children. Event Manager, Matthew Lewis said; “Renowned throughout mid Wales, south Wales and Herefordshire, our grotto experience is packed with festive magic, including real life reindeer and a short magical walk before meeting Santa, having a chat and receiving a suitable toy and delicious sweets. Our grotto is built at the heart of our exciting ‘bigger and better’ Christmas department this year which is very exciting. “On selected days throughout December our Breakfast and Afternoon Tea with Santa experiences offer something different to the traditional grotto visit. Amazing Wildlife: 10 Black Bear Facts!
1. American black bears are found in Canada, Mexico and North America. 2. They mostly eat grasses, herbs and fruit, but will sometimes eat other things, including fish. 3. The black bear’s coat has lots of layers of shaggy fur, which keeps it warm in cold winter months. 4. They may be called black bears, but their coat can be blue-gray or blue-black, brown and even sometimes white! 5. Their short claws make black bears expert tree climbers. 6. They may be large, but black bears can run up to 40kmph! 7. These big bears have a very good sense of smell and can often be seen standing on their hind legs, sniffing scents! 8. They usually live in forests but black bears are also found in mountains and swamps. 9. Black bears spend winter dormant in their dens, feeding on body fat they have built up over the summer and autumn. 10. They make their dens in caves, burrows or other sheltered spots. Sometimes they even make them in tree holes high above the ground!
