Welcome to our Spring issue. What a great time of year; a rise in temperature, more blue skies than grey, time for the children to get outdoors. You’ll be pleased to hear that this issue showcases some great outdoor activities, from activity days to foraging for food, hill climbing to den building, tree houses to train rides. There’s also indoor activities when the weather is unkind. All activity ideas are local to our area. So the family and I have been going back and forth to Shanghai for the last nine months or so. My husband works out there so whilst the children are young enough we are prioritising family time and exploring! We’re having a blast and have a good balance between the UK and China. I’ve been keen to capture our time and adventures on camera, but recently I’ve been questioning at what point should you put the camera away and just enjoy the moment? Next time you’re out and about with your family, think about this.Yes take photos, but don’t always be behind the camera.Yes you’ll have less photos but being in on the action is so rewarding and so much more entertaining for the children. As we all know, they don’t stay children for long. Enjoy them. Enjoy living in the memories and taking just a few pictures along the way to look back on. The spotlight is on Josie Pearson this issue. Josie is such a respected young lady in our area. How many children can say they know or have met a Paralympic Gold Medalist? Please turn to page 15 and see what she has to say to bullies. Lastly, we have seven and a half pages of what’s on listings. From weekly classes to monthly events spanning March to July. Keep it in easy access for the various weekends and holidays. Enjoy our Spring issue. See you in the Summer. Lisa Marie Badham x

Book Review:

Easter ‘Wild Wednesday’ Fun!

Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic by Liz Pichon This book is about a boy called Tom and tells the story of how he prepares and survives a school activity residential trip. He isn’t very organised and is in danger of not going on the trip as he keeps forgetting his permission slip. Packing for the trip is a disaster, but he gets there in the end. I liked this book because it is Funny and Exciting! The author lays out the pages in an interesting way and she uses funny words, lots of pictures and different fonts to enhance her story for the readers, for example, when things get scary she changes the font to express this. This book would suit readers who like funny stories and adventures with lots of snacks! It is suitable for 7-12 year olds. I really enjoyed this book and have bought some other Tom Gates books since. I do get through them quite quickly, so I hope she is coming up with some more soon. Review by Ben Tiernan (age 10)

Excitement and freedom! The Firelight folk have been busy this year welcoming the Spring with the Firelight Spring Awakening. In the roundhouse woodland on the Kentchurch estate they found the first signs of Spring, they lit fires to keep warm, they looked at the way animals build their homes to keep warm and built dens themselves, they played games of hiding and creeping and camouflage to bring more awareness to how animals survive. The Firelight Easter Exploration will bring the excitement and freedom of foraging for their own food in the woodland and surrounding land. It is a time of year to celebrate the abundance of life and growth, in doing so they will learn to identify some of the plants, trees and birds. It is their belief at Firelight that only by learning to love the world around us will we be able to actively care for it.We are part of this world and so they learn the courage it takes to be kind, and to cooperate, and so build resilience. Look out on the Firelight Facebook page and website for more dates, the Firelight Summer Foray returns in August.

Kids Recipe:

No-cook play dough recipe

Making play dough without cooking is an easy and fun way to entertain the kids. Children will love to squish, squash and get creative with this childhood favourite while you’ll enjoy the no-cook factor! AIngredients: long tradition at Penyrheol Chapel, near Felindre, 1 cup saltthe Egg Hunt and other activities for has been 3 cups as plain flourof the Easter celebrations. children a part 60ml (1 tbsp) vegetable oil This year is no different and the service will begin on food colouring Easter Sunday afternoon at 3pm. All are welcome. 250ml (1 cup) water

Method: 1: Mix all the dry ingredients and add oil. 2: Add the food colouring to water. 3: Slowly add the water until the desired consistency is reached. 3: Kneading will help to improve the texture, so let your kids get into it!

Notes: 1: Wrap the play dough up well after your child has finished playing with it in a ziplock bag (with all the air squeezed out) and then pop in an airtight plastic box. This way, it’ll stay fresh for another day. 2: Add the food colouring to the play dough and kneed on a plastic board if you don’t want to turn your wooden chopping board a funny colour! 3: Roll out the dough and use cookie cutters to make decorations. Use a straw to make a hole for hanging and then thread the air-dried shapes on to pretty ribbon or string to make a colourful garland. 12

Many children these days would recognise Justin Fletcher – In Justin’s House, in the Cbeebies Panto, or as one of his many characters from Gigglebiz. Maybe parents will have recognised something familiar about the voice of Jake from the Tweenies? Probably the first time children see him is in Something Special – Justin appears as himself and as his most well-known alter ego ‘Mr Tumble’ … and often as Grandad Tumble, Lord Tumble, Baby Tumble and the two Aunts, Polly and SukiTumble! Whether as himself or his characters, Justin uses sign language. It can be quite infectious, copying the signs alongside the kids! We’re not sure which part makes it such a hit with young children, the familiar format, the ‘clowning around’ or the songs and phrases which they can join in with. Either way it is clear that he is a great communicator. Right from day one our children are communicating with us, often it is us who don’t understand! As new parents, we try one thing after another until we solve the problem, is he hungry? Is it his nappy? Is he tired? Does he want a cuddle? We get there in the end! As time goes on the communication develops, a smile wins a smile, my tongue poking out – your tongue.Touch, tone of voice, that smile is as much a tool of communication as the words we say. Every waking moment our kids are soaking up all the sights, sounds and experiences around them. We hang so much on those early milestones! First full night’s sleep, first smile, first roll from front to back. They make us wait a long time for that first ‘dada’ or ‘mama’! Even longer for those two word sentences! For some it can be a frustrating wait (children as well as parents)! Signing with your child gives both of you an extra layer of communication. Just as we use tone of voice alongside the actual words to give meaning. In the same way that actions sit alongside songs. Long before our children will sing with us they will use their hands to copy a songs actions. This too is baby signing! Not sure where to start? Go along to The Muse in Brecon on a Wednesday morning. The sessions run each week during term time and you can begin at any point. Familiar songs and new ones, weekly signs and friendly staff who get you started on your own adventure. The signs are usually quite logical and work alongside whatever language you speak. The ones you use often will quickly become memorable. Then of course there is the cuppa, chat and play – that is just as important!

REVIEW

“A lovely way to spend time with your child” I turned up to Rob’s No Worries Yoga Parent and Child class on a soggy Saturday accompanied by one very excited seven year old Henry and one extremely sceptical ten year old Sam! Rob’s yoga studio is found on the first floor of the Wellbeing Centre on St Mary’s St, Brecon. The studio was light and warm, a welcome change from the grotty weather outside! The class lasted for an hour, which flew by! Rob was so relaxed and happy for my boys to do whatever they felt comfortable doing that I was able to concentrate on my own yoga, something I really didn’t anticipate happening! He was so calm, which the children really responded to, and allowed them to experiment with what he was showing them (at one point this involved the lesser known ‘Turkey Pose’). Rob knows that I have a problem with my ear and incorporated some exercises he thought might help. He really does do his best to individually tailor the class for his students. Sam loved the warrior pose best and Henry’s favourite was the relaxation at the end of the class, which Rob was very happy to let him make himself a little bed out of cushions and blankets for. Rob’s regular classes also have a relaxation session, which usually lasts about 15 minutes, this one lasted more like seven or eight minutes, which made it more manageable for wiggly children! I’m not sure that Sam is totally convinced by the benefits of yoga, though he did enjoy the experience, but Henry and I definitely are! We left feeling beautifully stretched and relaxed. What a lovely way to spend time with your child on a Saturday! Namaste everyone! Rob runs yoga classes throughout the week at the Wellbeing Centre. His Parent and Child class is on Saturdays at 12pm. Spotlight on: Josie Pearson Up until the age of 17 I was an able bodied horse riding fanatic who dreamed of being a three day eventer, all that was turned upside down when I was involved in a car accident in which I broke my neck and my life changed forever.

friend, teacher or parents so they can support you and then help you tell the right people in school so they can stop the bully.Try to ignore them or just walk away.Always remember that you’re a valuable person and focus on all the things you are good at to help stay positive.

After I’d completed my rehab I knew I wanted to get back into competitive sport, I started playing wheelchair rugby and eventually found my niche in discus in which I won a gold medal at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

What would you say to a bully? Do you actually realise how you’re making that person feel? Would you like it if you were getting bullied? Being a nice person will get you much further in life.

Where did you go to Primary and High School? Hay on Wye Primary School and Fairfield High School.

Best childhood memory? My first riding lessons. I remember a little Shetland called Billy who would quite often buck me off, it never put me off just made me more determined to get back on and try again.

Worst thing about being at school? I really enjoyed school but I’d have to say the end of playtime/break. Best thing about being at school? Seeing my friends everyday and science lessons. If you were to go back to school now, what would you do different? Put the same amount of effort in the subjects I wasn’t so keen as I did in the ones I really enjoyed. Best school dinner? Sausage, chips and peas. Worst school dinner? Curry. What advice would you give to someone being bullied? First of all you’re not alone, tell someone you trust, a

What is you typical meal during training? Chicken with rice and lots of vegetables. What tips can you give local children about taking part in sport? Try lots of different sports and most of all enjoy it. If you find one you really enjoy then join a local club and maybe work up to some competitions or set yourself goals to achieve. When is your next competition? I currently have an injury so I’m not sure. What is top of your bucket list? A skydive. Josie pictured above with partner Paul

Quackers - 13 years of fun Quackers is a family play centre, situated close to Newbridge-On-Wye, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 6HR (just off the A483 & A470). As well as a 4 lane astro slide, they have the biggest drop slide in Mid-Wales, a tube slide, roller racers, a rope bridge, ball pool and many other exciting features including softball cannons and double dropslide in their new extension which opened in 2014. There is also a soft play area for toddlers. Outside there is a large sandpit, race track with pedal go-karts, and a nature walk round the lake. At Quackers children don’t have all the fun. Adults are allowed on all the play equipment too. Their 5 star hygiene rated Cowshed Café serves a wide selection of home cooked meals and snacks, and upstairs they have two themed party rooms and a larger room for parties, meetings or small conferences. They have a number of options in their party package, so why not hold your special party at

Quackers and enjoy 1 hour 30 minutes of fun on the play equipment, followed by 30 minutes feasting in one of the themed party rooms? Choose between the Quackers’ Diner (seats 10) or the Enchanted Forest (seats 30). From October last year they started a pre-school session from 12.30 - 3.30pm on a Monday during term time, so why not go along so your little ones can play? Please be aware that during very busy periods they may regretfully have to limit your stay in the play area to 2 hours, for safety reasons. At other times you will be allowed to stay for as long as they are open, and as long as you have the energy!

The future of the Welsh Medium stream at Brecon High School There are those who felt that the vote by the County Councillors at their meeting on 7th March gave some hope to all those who are supporting the continuation of the Welsh Medium stream at Brecon High School. This was all dashed at the Cabinet meeting held on the 14th March, when the vote of the Cabinet members, albeit far from being overwhelming, was to proceed with the proposal to end the provision with effect from 31st August 2017. It is not the end. Whilst the County Council are going to push ahead by publishing the statutory notice to end the provision, there is the opportunity to object to this, of which I know there will be many who will wish to do so. As a school we have continued to make our representations but we are fortunate in having a range of parents and members of the community who are also campaigning to retain the Welsh Medium provision. This is an argument for the community, seeking not only to preserve the provision, but also to build it so that it is a thriving and sustainable part of the school and a part of our community. David Meredith, our Chair of Governors and County Councillor, attended the Cabinet meeting and has expressed his disappointment at the outcome, but has also re-iterated that the Governing Body continues to support a Welsh Medium stream at Brecon High School. We are also grateful for the on-going support of our other local Councillors, including Matthew Dorrance and Gillian Thomas, who have spoken strongly in our favour. The school has been subjected to 3 consultations, the first one starting in March 2015. Over that time the reasons for removing the provision subtly changed. The most recent arguments for closing the provision given by the County Council have been around the current size of the provision and a need to ensure robust linguistic progression and appropriate curriculum choice for Welsh Medium pupils throughout all key stages of education. It is worth looking at these 2 factors from the school’s position. The numbers of pupils in our Welsh Medium stream are low, that cannot be denied, however this has a 22

lot to do with the impact of the first consultation, where there was a belief it was a ‘fait accompli’ and around half of the 70 pupils who were in the Welsh stream at that time then moved, mostly, to Builth Wells High School. The continued uncertainty caused by the ongoing consultations inevitably had an impact on the number of pupils that joined us in both September 2015 and September 2016. Parents spoke to us about the need to have a certainty regarding the provision they wanted for their child, you cannot disagree with this, however the school has suffered from the impact of this to a point where the low numbers we have, is used as a reason the provision should be removed. That is hard to accept. You must not forget that there has been no plan to grow the numbers of pupils who could join a Welsh Medium stream. We only have 2 feeders, why could there not be more? When looking at the linguistic progress and curriculum choice, the school was faced with a difficult choice again with our Welsh Medium stream. With such small numbers we could not offer the full breadth of Welsh Medium classes that we would have liked, it is not economically viable without adversely impacting on the education of those pupils in the English stream. Whilst we did offer a number of GCSE option subjects, we cannot run these groups if the pupils did not opt for them! The school has also been criticised for not offering Welsh Medium subjects at A-level. We have often repeated the clarification on this. Brecon High School is part of the South Powys Consortium, which is a group of Secondary Schools and a College, who work together to provide Post 16 courses, both academic and vocational for the pupils in our schools. As part of this, it is agreed Builth Wells High School will offer the A-levels through the medium of Welsh. As a result, we do not offer these courses. It is difficult to be criticised for not offering Welsh Medium A-levels, when it has never been planned for us to do so! Whilst there is no doubt that this decision will have a significant impact on Brecon High School, we also need to focus on the parents and pupils, they are the ones who will be most affected. We

have had commitment and support from the parents and pupils in the Welsh stream and now they are potentially facing another difficult choice for their children. These are pupils who are a part of the school, they have formed relationships with other pupils and staff. They have contributed to the ethos and its recent success. They feel safe, they are happy. Now there are choices to be made about staying in a Welsh Medium stream and which other Welsh Medium school they might attend. They may also make a decision to leave the Welsh stream all together. Year 9 pupils have made their GCSE choices to begin next September – if they move they may not be able to have these same choices. These pupils will have also completed Key Stage 3 studying Welsh First Language, legally they have to continue this – they cannot transfer to Welsh Second Language. They are being forced to move, essentially. We also know that there are 10 pupils who wanted to join the Welsh stream at Brecon High School in Year 7 this September, they are now faced with having to make another difficult choice. The significant increase we were expecting is a sign of how the school is now viewed, what we have to offer and of our on-going commitment. We have to face the fact we now move into the phase where objections need to be raised during the 28 days of the objection period. Whilst this will end during April, we will not have any real idea when this will be discussed again by the Cabinet. It will be a new Cabinet, given that we are now entering the election period and there will be no decision making taking place. I would ask that the community maintain the pressure on the County Council by writing their objections and sending them to the County Council. The 3 consultations have demonstrated that there are many different aspects to consider in regard to the future of the Welsh Medium stream. It is not just about the educational provision. Consider the travel the pupils will face, consider the cost of this travel, which is going to be an addition to the current transport costs. Consider the future for Ysgol-y-Bannau, consider the impact on promoting the Welsh Language. Consider the loss to the

new school buildings that will open in September 2019. Ultimately this is a decision that will make any reinstatement of Welsh Medium provision in the Brecon area almost impossible to reverse. Let us hope they get it right. There are a great number of parents who are working together, in opposition to this decision, we are grateful to them for the work they are doing. We are aware of meetings that have been secured already, we hope that these bring further strength to the weight of argument to retain Welsh Medium provision for Brecon and our local community. In order to respond I would suggest reading the documentation that has been produced, which is available on the County Council website, the link is; http://www.powys.gov.uk/en/corporate/find-outabout-consultations-in-powys/brecon-high-schoolwelsh-medium-stream/ The deadline for responses is the 13th April and should be either posted to Mr Jeremy Patterson, Chief Executive and Director of Education, Powys County Council, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 5LG or emailed to school. modernisation@powys.gov.uk Whatever happens, we must continue to put pressure on the County Council to deliver the best opportunities for the education of our young people. Amazing Wildlife: Ten Facts About Turtles!

From giant, slow-moving land-dwelling tortoises and snappy terrapins basking in their fresh-water lagoons, to the graceful strokes of a sea turtle gliding through our oceans - check out our ten totally awesome turtle facts, below! 1. Turtles belong to one of the oldest reptile groups in the world - beating snakes, crocodiles and alligators! 2. These creatures date back to the time of the dinosaurs, over 200 million years ago - woah! 3. Turtles are easily recognised by their bony, cartilaginous shell. This super-tough casing acts like a shield to protect them from predators - some turtles can even tuck their head up inside their shell for extra protection! 4. Just like your bones, a turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton. It’s made up of over 50 bones which include the turtle’s rib cage and spine. 5. Contrary to popular belief, a turtle cannot come out of its shell. The turtle’s shell grows with them, so it’s impossible for them to grow too big for it! 6. What a turtle eats depends on the environment it lives in. Land-dwelling turtles will munch on beetles, fruit and grass, whereas sea dwellers will gobble everything from algae to squid and jellyfish. 7. Some turtles are carnivores (meat eaters), others are herbivores (plant eaters) and some are omnivores (a mixture of the two!). Many baby turtles start life as carnivores but grow to eat more plants as they mature. 8. Turtles are ‘amniotes’ - they breathe air and lay their eggs on land, although many species live in or around water. 9. These cold-blooded creatures have an incredibly long life span. The oldest ever recorded, named Tu’i Malila, of Tonga Island, passed away at the grand old age of 188! 10. Sadly, many species of turtle are endangered! 129 of approximately 300 species of turtle and tortoise on Earth today are either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered, according to the IUCN. Threats include loss of habitat, poaching and the illegal pet trade. 24

There’s so much going on in our local area, and so many great facilities for families and young children, but it can be hard to keep up and get organized enough to do everything we’d like to with the kids! Cariads Local aims to gather together the information you need for days out, workshops, classes, holiday daycare and child-friendly eating places, enabling you to make the most of your time with your family. It never fails to inspire me to do something fun and different with our 4 boys. Laura x
