Hello
Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB Email: lisamarie@cariadslocal.co.uk Website: www.cariadslocal.co.uk
I’m writing this having only just managed to escape from my snowed in farmhouse after 6 long days confined... I can’t wait for Spring and some sunshine! We’ve got loads of ideas packed into this issue for places to visit on a sunny, or rainy, day out. There’s loads to do outdoors once the weather warms up – Firelight do some wonderful foraging and fire craft workshops, and the Perrygrove Railway sounds great fun. If the weather’s against you, why not pop to the cinema at Wyeside, see a play at Theatr Brycheiniog, or let the kids run wild in Play Barn or Quackers Indoor Play Centre? We’ve also got solutions to holiday childcare, with options spread throughout our distribution area. Just make sure you book up early!
Working with 13 local Children’s Nurseries and 28 local Primary Schools in the following towns and villages: Brecon, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Clifford, Clyro, Crickhowell, Eardisley, Hay-on-Wye, Kington, Llangattock, Llangorse, Llangynidr, Llyswen, Michaelchurch Escley, Peterchurch, Sennybridge, Staunton-on-Wye, Talgarth and Whitney-on-Wye.
Finally, we hope you find the listings at the back of the magazine really useful. We’ve been collecting together information on local clubs – we really do have something for whatever the age and interests of your children: sign them up for something new and watch their confidence grow as they master a new skill or sport and make new friends. There’s so much to do locally at weekends and during the Easter and May half term holidays, the biggest events, which my family will be sure to attend, being the Royal Welsh Spring Festival (where children go free) and the Hay Festival – both have lots going on for families and are a real treat. Enjoy, and make the most of all our area has to offer this spring! Laura Williams x

“SuperStars is exciting, fun and enjoyable!” It’s ok, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because this Easter SuperStars are running their fun-packed holiday course at Crickhowel Primary School. If your child’s been to SuperStars before, they’ll probably be shouting, “Book me a place now!” How do we know? Because in 2017, more than 7,500 children gave their courses the double thumbs-up. So, they’re a hit with the kids. SuperStars want to be a hit with you too. With lots of parents, they already are. In fact, 95.6% of those they’ve asked said they’d recommend SuperStars courses to a friend. And they get lots of positive feedback, like this from a parent in Westbury: “From my child’s point of view SuperStars is exciting, fun and enjoyable. From my point of view, it’s safe, wellorganised and affordable. We’re both very happy.” SuperStars run all their holiday courses on school sites. They do this so the children are in a familiar environment, often with their friends. All of the staff provide specialist support in schools during term time, so there’s every chance you and your child will know the course leader too.
2
Using school sites also helps your mornings run smoothly as you can keep to your normal routine. And it keeps the cost of the courses down, as they’re not paying high commercial rents. Savings they pass straight on to you. SuperStars help children get active, have fun and learn new skills, in a place where they feel safe and secure. And, because they know juggling work and family is sometimes hard, they make the holidays easier for you too. Two easy ways to book: 1. Online at www.super-stars.org.uk/2018courses. 2. Call them on 0845 241 3682. Spaces are limited! And can go fast! Book early to secure yours (plus get your FREE SuperStars water bottle). Book by Friday 16th March to guarantee your child’s place and avoid a 10% late booking fee.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone By J.K. Rowling

This is the first book in the Harry Potter series, which are my favourite books EVER! I have the stories on CD and I have been listening to them since I was 4 and I couldn’t read. In this book a boy called Harry Potter finds out that he is a wizard and gets to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He gets to learn all about spells and magic, and makes some great friends called Ron and Hermoine, but has to battle the evil wizard Voldemort! I love the Harry Potter books because they are really exciting, but also very funny. My favourite characters are Fred and George Weasley because they make me laugh a lot. My favourite part of this book is when Harry goes to buy his school supplies in Diagon Alley. I wish I could go to Hogwarts!

New ballet classes at Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall Ballet classes for boys and girls age 3+ have recently started in Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall. Classes are creative and fun whilst focussing on good ballet technique. Taught by Royal Academy of Dance teacher Nina Salmon of Monnow Ballet School, an established, friendly school based near Monmouth, Nina aims to bring her love of ballet to more children in the Monmouthshire/Herefordshire area. Children from the new Ewyas Harold classes have enjoyed their first term of ballet. It ended brilliantly in December with a production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Blake Theatre, Monmouth joining with all the students from Monnow Ballet’s Monmouth branch. The Ewyas Harold children enjoyed dancing as stars, presents and snowflakes on a professional stage and then watching the older children dancing the rest of the show. Two ex Monnow Ballet pupils, who are now in full time training at Elmhurst Ballet School in Birmingham, danced in the production
which was very exciting to watch and something to aspire to for the younger students. Currently there are 3 classes running at the Ewyas Harold branch: Pre school (age 3+), Pre primary (age 4-6) and Primary (age 6-8). More classes will run depending on demand. The syllabus followed is the Royal Academy of Dance which is recognised around the world for its high standards and quality of dance education. Nina Salmon really believes dancing is for everyone, whether purely for fitness, confidence and musicality, or for the more serious student who wants to work towards exams and even auditions. For more details go to www.monnowballet.co.uk or for a 2 week trial contact Nina on 07974117701 or email nina@monnowballet.co.uk Photo credit: Jon of lighttheface.com

Welcoming all mothers with babies The joy of having a baby can sometimes be overshadowed by the toll giving birth can take on our bodies. In these mum and baby yoga classes, movement nourishes and restores a healthy posture as we work towards regaining and developing tone in the pelvic floor. By strengthening the core muscles, breastfeeding, carrying and lifting your growing baby can be achieved with more ease. In addition, body to body contact with your baby during the practice is a simple yet powerful way to bond more closely with your child and establishes a secure basis for her or his future independence. Olivia has been teaching yoga for 15 years and practicing for 20. Having just had a baby herself, she is sharing these classes from her now daily yoga practice she does with her little one. Welcoming all mothers with babies to come and enjoy the healing and nourishing benifits of yoga practice.

Kids Recipe: Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns Method:
1: KIDS the writing in bold is for you ADULTS the rest is for you. Mix the bun ingredients. Put the strong flour, yeast, caster sugar and 1 tsp salt in a bowl with the spices and mix. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk, egg and butter. Start mixing with a plastic or wooden spoon and finish with your hands. If the dough is too dry, add warm water, or extra flour if it’s wet. 2: Now stretch the dough – this is called kneading. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10 mins until it becomes smooth and springy. This will be a bit too much work for children, so get them to start the kneading, then when they get tired, take over. 3: Leave the dough to rise until doubled in size because of the yeast. Transfer to a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover loosely with a clean, damp tea towel. Leave in a warm place to rise until roughly doubled in size – this will take about 1 hr depending on how warm the room is.
Prep: 40 Mins • Cook: 20 Mins • Makes 8
Ingredients: • 400g strong white bread flour, plus extra for dusting • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 50g golden caster sugar, plus 1 tsp • 1 tsp mixed spice • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 250ml warm milk • 1 medium egg, beaten • 50g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing • 100g chocolate chip (milk or dark, whichever you prefer), or currants or raisins • 50g plain flour For the glaze (optional) • 2 tbsp apricot jam
10
4: Add the chocolate chips and do some division. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and flatten. Scatter over the chocolate chips (or dried fruit), and knead the dough a few more times. Divide it into 8 even portions – halve the dough, then halve each portion twice more, and explain the maths. 5: Roll the dough into buns. Roll each portion into a smooth round and place on a greased baking sheet in 2 rows of 4, leaving some room between each bun for it to rise. Cover with a tea towel again and leave in a warm place to prove for 20 mins, until almost doubled in size again or just touching. 6: Make the crosses on the buns and bake them. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Mix the plain flour with 1 tsp sugar and 4-5 tbsp water to give you a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag and pipe white lines on the buns to make crosses. Bake for 20 mins until they are light brown. 7: Brush them with jam if you want them to be nice and shiny. If you want to enjoy the buns untoasted, gently heat the jam in a pan or the microwave, and brush over the buns using a pastry brush. If you are going to toast them, then don’t glaze them as the jam will burn.

Amazing Wildlife: Ten Facts About Hippos
1. Hippos are large semi-aquatic mammals, with a large barrel-shaped body, short legs, a short tail and an enormous head! They have greyish to muddy-brown skin, which fades to a pale pink colour underneath. 2. They are considered the second largest land animal on Earth (first place goes to the elephant!). Males measure around 3.5m long and 1.5m tall, and can weigh up 3,200kg.That’s as much as three small cars! 3. To stay cool in the blistering African heat, hippos spend most of their day in rivers and lakes. Their eyes, nose and ears are located on the top of their head, which means they can see and breathe whilst submerged in the water. What’s more, these super-cool creatures sweat an oily red liquid which helps protect their skin from drying out – and acts as a sunblock, too! 4. These magnificent mammals were once found throughout all sub-saharan Africa. Sadly, populations have declined due to habitat loss and hunting. Today, 16
they are largely confined to protected areas in East African countries. 5. Hippos are most active at night, when they forage for food. They are herbivores, and eat mostly grass – and boy do they eat grass! In just one night, they can guzzle down up to 35kg of their favourite grub! 6. Despite their enormous size, hippos are great swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes underwater. When completely submerged, their ears and nostrils fold shut to keep water out. 7. Hippos usually live in groups (or “herds”) of around ten to 20 individuals, led by one large dominant male. The other members are females, their young and a few young non-breeding males. 8. Dominant males are very protective over their group. To warn off rival males, they open their huge mouths and display their long, curved canines! They also make loud grunts and aggressive splashes in the water. 9. Female hippos, called cows, give birth every two years, usually to a single calf. Soon after birth, the mother and her baby join up with other cows and calves for protection against predators, such as crocodiles, lions and hyenas. 10. In the wild hippos live for around 40 years. In captivity, they tend to live longer and may reach up to 50 years old.
