Now onto our Summer issue. The team have been busy sourcing as much variety as possible. Our first pages are all about childcare. For working parents, School holidays can mean a constant juggle. The local Clubs and Playschemes can be a great break for parents, not to mention super fun for the children. We then move on with ideas for family days out and activities. Some corker attractions have come aboard Cariads. Some right on our doorstep and others within an hours drive. A big topic, and a worrying one at that, is the proposed plans by the Powys County Council for our local High Schools. Our new MP, Chris Davies has supplied an article updating us on the current situation. Chris, being a concerned parent himself, will help us fight for the next generation. When this magazine goes to print, my next job is to write a letter to PCC explaining my concerns. If you are affected by their ‘proposals’ for Gwernyfed, Brecon, Builth or Llandrindod, make sure you have your say, don’t sit back because you may leave it to late. Our what’s on listings have grown massively - now a whopping 8 pages. This will be my ‘Bible’ over the coming months. Lastly, a personal thank you to local mum Laura Williams from Brecon, who has helped hugely with contacting local businesses for this issue. Meaning I could have some precious moments with Otis. Why do babies have to grow up so quickly? It doesn’t seem that long ago that Cariad was born, now approaching 3 she’s choosing what she wears each day (pictured right)! Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x

Girlguiding UK - Have fun, build brilliant friendships and gain valuable life skills... Girlguiding UK is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK, founded in 1909. Thanks to the dedication and support of 100,000 amazing volunteers, Girlguiding UK are active in every part of the UK, giving girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. Girlguiding builds girls’ confidence and raises their aspirations and gives them the chance to discover their full potential and encourages them to be a powerful force for good. Girlguiding is open to all girls – of all faiths and none.

We are for all girls and young women, whatever their background and circumstances. We offer them fun, exciting activities and the chance to make life-long friends.

Girlguiding gives girls a space where they can really be themselves with other girls and share the experience of growing up as a girl in today’s world. Research has shown that being girl-only is one of the things our young members value most about guiding.

Guiding is as relevant to today’s girls as it was 100 years ago, because we listen to them and constantly evolve and adapt what we offer them without losing what makes us uniquely us. In additional to our weekly meeting where we have a lot of fun playing games, singing songs, enjoying the outdoors and indoor activities too. Some of the other opportunities offered to girls now include the following: • Twice a year Girlguiding hosts the BIG GIG – a massive pop concert for more than 20,000 Guides – with performances from some of the biggest and most popular current artists. • Our camps, holidays and trips give girls the chance to try new adventures, from quad-biking, orienteering and abseiling, to zorbing, canoeing and zip-wiring. It’ll make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. Rainbows - Have lots of fun Rainbows are girls aged five to seven (four to seven in Northern Ireland) and follow a program called the Rainbow Jigsaw, through which they can take part in lots of different activities with girls their own age. 10

Brownies - We do cool stuff Brownies are girls aged seven to ten who become a member of a Six and follow a program called the Brownie Adventure. Brownies opens up a world of exciting challenges and the opportunity to try new things and to make brilliant friends. Guides - We make things happen Guides are girls aged 10 to 14 who are given the chance to explore their individual skills and abilities and try out new challenges as part of a team. Girls can get involved in anything from adventure sports to performing arts, travel and taking part in community action projects The Senior Section - We explore more The Senior Section offers young women aged 14 to 25 the opportunity to develop their skills and abilities through a flexible and inspiring program which offers a huge variety of challenges, activities and opportunities for personal development. Opportunities for adults in guiding? Girlguiding isn’t just for girls. In total, we have around 100,000 adult volunteers and supporters. More than 80,000 amazing volunteers contribute over ten million hours to guiding every year. In return, we offer training and the opportunity to develop new skills. There are many volunteer roles in guiding. Many volunteers give their time as Leaders or Assistant Leaders for guiding units and get to see girls enjoying events and activities that they have organised. Other volunteers take on administrative responsibilities, or help out with driving or maintenance on an occasional basis. You can also keep up with news, events and developments within Girlguiding and enjoy a range of benefits by becoming an adult member. Local Units in Wales: - Rainbows & Brownies in Clyro (Hay-on-Wye), 3 Rainbow, 3 Brownie and 2 Guide Units in Brecon, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in Crickhowell and Llangynidr, Brownies and Rainbows in Gilwern. In England: - Brownies and Guides in Weobley, Rainbows and Brownies in Kington, Rainbows in Eardisley. Replace the school playground with your garden this summer holiday!

Wild Wednesdays

Get your young ones involved in creating a wildlife friendly garden to attract bees, butterflies and birds, creating an exciting hive of activity. Insects: Attract bees, butterflies and ladybirds by planting nectar rich flowers such as honeysuckle, lavender, sedum and cotoneaster. Also add an insect house to make them feel welcome; great fun to make from scratch or available to buy ready-made. Birds: Encourage birds by planting trees and bushes such as holly, sorbus and pyracantha which produce natural winter food such as berries. Also provide bird feeders and nesting boxes.

It’s great fun making a bird feeder with lard and bird seed and decorating a bird box with colourful paints! Hedgehogs: These friendly little mammals will help keep your garden free from slugs and snails! Make sure there is a way into your garden for hedgehogs and provide them with food and water… they love cat or dog food in jelly or a specialist hedgehog food! Also introduce a hedgehog house to provide somewhere safe for them to hibernate during winter. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Three Cocks.

Lyngo Theatre presents Puss In Boots

Would you trust a talking cat? You never know, he might turn you from a pauper to a prince just like the hero of this story, brought to vivid life by Patrick Lynch from Cbeebies. Using smoke and mirrors and hidden trapdoors he’ll show you how this sure-footed feline fools both the King and the Ogre to put his master at the top. This is a great production for kittens age 4 and over (age guide only), and is a wonderful introduction to theatre - with a host of puppets, a working windmill and an avalanche of fruit and nuts - go and see this classic furry tail, it’s the cat’s whiskers! This is Lyngo Theatre’s second visit to Wyeside, following Patrick Lynch’s successful tour of Jack And The Beanstalk last year.

Follow Tom, Twigs, Ariela and friends on an action packed adventure! Join CBeebies star, Tree Fu Tom, as he takes to the stage at The Courtyard, Hereford on Wednesday 29th July, St David’s Hall, Cardiff on Wednesday 26th August or at the Old Rep Theatre, Birmingham on Saturday 5th September! Follow Tom, Twigs, Ariela and friends on an action packed adventure through the magical world of Treetopolis! Our Children, Our Schools, Our Future I risk boring readers by bringing an MP’s perspective to Cariad. Bringing up children should be great fun and hugely rewarding and as a father of two little girls myself the last thing I want to do is ‘lecture’. However, given the threats offered to our local education system by the ‘one size fits all’ approach adopted at Cardiff Bay and County Hall, I hope that there is some merit in airing the issues. If I needed reminding after the General Election campaign, our community is one of small towns, villages, hamlets and farmsteads. The sparsity of population is one of the factors that make our area one of such charm and character. It offers its challenges in terms of travel to services, notably in travelling to school, but it helps to produce confident youngsters versed in far more than computer games and the latest fashion – go to any Young Farmers’ Club and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Our children are our future and our schools are central to that. The idea that by merging our high schools into ‘super-schools’, condemning children to lengthy travel and less personal tuition, is somehow justified by some notional financial saving is ludicrous. It is not too extreme to characterise the idea as a real and present danger to all that is best in our communities. I have publicly opposed ‘centralisation’ of schooling in our area for many years. I want my daughters to go to Gwernyfed High School on its present site in Three Cocks and I know that parents throughout Brecon and Radnorshire also look forward to seeing their children moving on to existing local high schools. We are fortunate in having excellent teaching and support staff across our area; we must offer them our full and unequivocal support – they help to shape our children and our future. I have been fortunate to have been given a platform. I pledged during my election campaign to raise the profile of Brecon and Radnorshire and I can think of no better cause than the future of local education around which to base a campaign to promote our

16

area as one where excellence is attained by ‘bespoke’ schooling of the type we all know and praise. Parents at Gwernyfed High School have taken the initiative and I was able to help as both Governor and MP at a campaign fund-raising event at the Old Railway Nursery in Three Cocks when almost £2000 was raised. Local events highlight the issue and encourage solidarity. If you have anything in mind and I can help in any way, please get in touch. Whilst Brecon may be the prospective host to the ‘super school’, I’m certain that parents in the catchment will have concerns that a huge school will swamp pupils used to the personal touch from which we benefit in our area. I will certainly fight to retain that approach, treating each pupil as very much an individual; no matter what buildings we have, we will all seek categoric guarantees that any changes are improvements, not changes for the sake of pragmatism and, yes, money. Of course, whilst initial focus has been on the Brecon/ Gwernyfed issue I am only too aware that we must keep pressure on the need to maintain excellent schools in Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells and to make access to Welsh medium education readily available and accessible. Space prevents me developing the theme but I urge parents (current and prospective), teachers, Governors and everyone with an interest in local education to get in touch so that together we can mount a robust, effective and winning campaign. On the wider front, I am working with my colleagues in Cardiff Bay to ensure that as much pressure as possible is applied to a Welsh Government that puts political dogma before our children’s future and, frankly, ignores Brecon and Radnorshire, something we must look to remedy when next we elect our Assembly Members. I have also had outline discussions with the Secretary of State for Education in Westminster and will make certain that the future of education in Brecon and Radnorshire echoes around the Westminster Chamber. Our children are our future and our schools are central to that – please lend your support to the case for saving what is a fundamental part of our community and please let me know if you think that we can put the initials ‘MP’ to good use for the cause. Recipes: “Our family will have a picnic at any time of the year, regardless of rain or even snow, but it’s definitely more fun to eat outside once the weather starts warming up! Somehow everything tastes better when you’re in the open air! We’ll often just make up some sandwiches and pack some crisps, apples and a few bottles of water, but sometimes it’s nice to make a picnic a bit more of an event, and cook something special. My boys are especially fond of both these recipes, and they’re actually pretty easy for little fingers to help with. A word of warning: the sausage rolls in particular are EXTREMELY moreish, make plenty! Of course, if you’ve got time on your side you can make your own pastry, but the readymade stuff is very handy.”

Sausage Rolls Ingredients:

8 of your favourite sausages Plain flour for dusting 500g block of puff pastry 1 medium free range egg, beaten Oil for greasing Grainy mustard, ketchup or brown sauce (optional)

Method: 1: Lightly grease a baking tray with the oil and preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius or 180 degrees for a fan oven. 2: Snip a hole in an end of each sausage and squeeze the sausage meat out into a bowl. Add some mustard, ketchup or brown sauce if using, and mix. 3: Dust your worktop with flour and roll out half the pastry into a rectangle about A4 paper size. 4: Take half the sausage mixture and make one long sausage out of it. It should be almost as long as the long edge of the pastry. 5: Put the sausage meat along the bottom half of the pastry, leaving a border around the edge. Brush all around the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg. 6: Fold the top half of the pastry over the bottom half and seal the border by pressing down around it with a fork.Trim away any excess pastry and then cut the giant sausage roll into 8 smaller ones. 7: Place the sausage rolls on the baking tray and make 8 more with the remaining pastry and sausagemeat. Brush the sausage rolls with remaining beaten egg. 8: Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden and the sausagemeat is cooked through.

Chocolate Chip Shortbread Ingredients:

200g of soft butter (plus some for greasing) 100g golden caster sugar (plus some extra for sprinkling) 300g of plain flour (plus some extra for dusting) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 100g chocolate chips

Method: 1: Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease two baking trays with butter. 2: Cream together the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. 3: Sift in the flour and add the vanilla extract and chocolate chips. 4: Mix until a dough forms and then knead gently until smooth. 5: Dust your worktop with flour and roll out the dough with a rolling pin until it’s about a quarter of an inch thick. 6: Use cookie cutters to cut out whatever shapes you like from the dough. Put the biscuits onto the baking trays and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden. 7: Once biscuits are out of the oven, sprinkle with caster sugar and place on a wire rack to cool. Benefits of Mediation Wye Valley Mediation is run by Claire Jackson, who began professional practice as a barrister in 1994. On moving to Hay she decided that she wanted to help families avoid court unless it was necessary- separation is traumatic enough, without the added cost and stress of litigation.

• Your children’s living and care arrangements • How to tell the children about the changes to their family life.

• Money; for your children and for yourselves. • Homes; where everyone will live.

your mediator will help you focus on your children’s needs

Claire says that some degree of conflict is inevitable when couples separate as our emotions impact on our problem solving ability. It can help to have an independent third person present (the mediator) who can provide structure to the conversation about present and future planning.

Mediators won’t make the decisions for you, but they will empower you to make decisions that you can both agree on; by giving you relevant legal information, identifying what information you need to gather, and helping you generate options for a settlement. Most importantly mediators help you to focus on your children’s needs.Your agreement is not binding until you have had advice from your solicitor, but your mediator will save you time and money by gathering everything the solicitor will need in order to advise fully.

So what sort of things might you want to talk about with your mediator?

Agincourt 600 Wales We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. In our last chapter we left the brave men of Brecon waving good bye to their families on a bright sunny day in June. The Lady Gwladys and the other women returned home with a shadow of fear in their hearts. News would be a long time coming, and ahead of the men were not only the dangers of battle itself, but also the sea crossing to France, cold nights, weeks of rain and the risk of disease in the camp. When all were assembled the King and all the men and women needed to support the campaign set off for France. Henry knew he needed to capture a port to ensure his supply route from England. Harfleur was perfect as it not only had a good harbour but it was also easy to defend from landward attacks! Unfortunately this made it harder for Henry to capture. The army surrounded the town to cut it off from supplies then the big artillery pounded the walls to weaken them. Finally the troops were ready to attack! Just in the nick of time the towns commanders asked to talk and agreed a surrender. But the damage had already been done. A month camped in the boggy fields around the town had weakened Henry’s men; - no toilets and so many people meant it was hard to keep water clean and many were ill with dysentery. Henry took a week to consider his position;- those of his men too ill to continue he sent back home, still more needed to be left in Harfleur to prevent counter attacks by the French. Return to England having only captured one town would mean disgrace; - he needed to make a statement and prove he wasn’t afraid. Henry took his remaining 9000 men and set off across France towards English owned Calais. The route he planned was saying: “this is my land, come and stop me if you think you can!” After 2 & ½ weeks of marching the armies faced each other. With each day that passed Henry’s men grew more tired, food was running low and still more men were sick. The French stood between Henry and Calais – they had to fight! The French troops were well equipped, fresh from home and full of confidence; - they planned to tell tales about this fight for years to come, ‘the day we beat that upstart Henry and

his rabble of peasants’. The longer they waited, delaying the battle, the more their ranks grew with local lords wanting a share of the glory. The situation could only get worse for Henry, he had to take the fight to them. As the day dawned on the 25th of October Henry spoke to this men, he reminded them of their victories and told them that the French had laughed at their measly army and claimed not to even need their own cross-bow archers to ensure this victory. Well that was all it took, no-one mocks a longbow archer and lives to tell the tale! With the village of Agincourt on one side and dense woodland on the other, the battlefield was long and narrow. The massed longbows took up position on the sides behind sharpened stakes. The 1500 Men-at-Arms filled the middle of the field in a dense line 4 men deep. The French Men-at-Arms outnumbered them 5:1 and filled the valley from side to side. The Longbows unleashed their arrow storm – an armour piercing rain of death - the French taking by surprise rushed their knights forward into hand-to-hand combat. They approached in full armour over muddy ground, Henry’s ‘lowly’ Men-atArms had lighter gear and moved with speed to meet them. Once a knight was down in the mud the weight of his armour made it almost impossible for him to get back up – Henry’s men pounced! The sheer number of French began to push Henry’s forces back, but the archers kept up their terrifying hail of arrows and now the French were having to climb over their own fallen comrades. A shout goes up – the King’s brother is wounded! Henry fights his way to his brother’s side and takes up position above him. The fighting grows fierce – Henry is struck! Dafydd Gam and Henry Vaughan rush to defend their king. Still the French keep coming and the arrows have all been fired, bowmen take up their swords, hatchets and even their tools to continue the fight. For 3 hours the battle rages, the orders ring out ‘take no prisoners’- The King’s standard still flies proud and finally the French run scared! As both sides count their losses the legends begin. Henry has lost 450 men while the French have lost over 6000. From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.”

, Christopher s Book Reviews: “Hi, I’m Christopher. I’m 11 years old and I live in Brecon. I love reading and review my favourite books at Christopher’s Corner on www.bookwormink.co.uk.” Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero. by Rick Riordan ‘This is the number one, bestselling title in this new spin-off series from Percy Jackson creator, Rick Riordan. Old enemies awaken as camp half-blood’s new arrivals prepare for war. When Jason, Piper and Leo crash land at Camp Half-Blood, they have no idea what to expect. Apparently this is the only safe place for children of the Greek Gods - despite the monsters roaming the woods and demigods practising archery with flaming arrows and explosives. But rumours of a terrible curse - and a missing hero - are flying around camp. It seems Jason, Piper and Leo are the chosen ones to embark on a terrifying new quest, which they must complete by the winter solstice in just four days time. Can the trio succeed on this deadly mission - and what must they sacrifice in order to survive?’ This is the first instalment in the new series by Rick Riordan featuring his famous character, Percy Jackson, a teenager who’s half-god and lives in modern day Manhattan. In the book Percy Jackson has gone missing and his friends are looking for him. The goddess Gaia is coming back with the giants to take over Olympus. Three new heroes must rise to fight the giants! These heroes are Jason, Piper and Leo, some students from a local school who get mixed up in the adventure. This is an action sort of book; it’s very exciting, but not scary! I like how you can learn Greek and Roman mythology from it. My favourite bit of the story is when Jason fights the giant Enceladus. This is my favourite part, because I like it when he uses his Roman fighting skills. My favourite character is Jason because he is good at fighting monsters. Also he comes from a Roman camp which is pretty cool. This is a good book for people age 9 and up. I would say it’s more for boys than girls. It’s a good idea to read the Percy Jackson books first. That way you get to know all about Percy. I think this is just as good as the Percy Jackson books, and Rick Riordan is one of my favourite authors at the moment. 5 Stars The Man in the Mountain by J E Roberts In the Black Mountains of Wales wild animals are disappearing. A strange figure is roaming the peaks at night, calling them into the deep caves beneath the mountains. Joe has moved to the area from the city and is trying to get used to his new life with his family. But now, together with his friend Gwen, he must risk his life trying to find the animals and bring them back. The Man in the Mountain is an ecological adventure story for children 9 years old and above. Although set in Wales, the theme of reconnection to nature is universal. In our current society books like this are needed as studies show children are losing touch with the natural world, increasingly unable to identify animals. Sir David Attenborough says: “The wild world is becoming so remote to children that they miss out, and an interest in the natural world doesn’t grow as it should. Nobody is going protect the natural world unless they understand it.” The book contains interesting facts about science, Darwin and evolution woven into the story. Readers will also enjoy the many laugh-out-loud comic moments. “I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! As a class teacher I believe that it is an excellent read for children in Key Stage 2/3 as it celebrates the beauty and precious quality of nature which are relevant when studying environmental issues. The setting is wild and mystical but the characters are very real. It is ideal for text-based literacy activities as it is rich with literary devices and written in short chapters to make it manageable. I will be using it with my class next week! Loved it!” - Mrs Hall from Hay School. Please mention Cariads Local Family Magazine when responding to adverts

Being a parent to a newborn baby, a 2 year old, and a step parent to a 10 year old, I am really looking forward to gathering all the information other local families need for the next Winter issue. To give them as much variety at their finger tips as possible.

Sourcing interesting ideas for family days out - I for one am prepared to travel that little bit further to get those all important memories.

The what’s on section is vital, it’s become peoples ‘Bible’!
