If you are reading this magazine then it has either arrived home in your children’s school bag at the end of term or you have picked one up from a local community point. You could live locally or are visiting our beautiful area. You’ll be pleased to know, planning for the Summer Holidays starts right here! We have pulled together all things family. Ideas for days out or activities. Businesses or services that cater for children. Recipes, reviews and interesting articles. Puzzles and competitions - fancy a Spa Day for two at Peterstone Court? Then turn to page 23 if you think you deserve a break! Our five pages of What’s On listings will hopefully prove very useful. They take you through the holidays but also give you an insight of what goes on once the children are back to School come September. Some of our regular readers of monthly publications Wye Local and Local Beacon, call this section their Bible! Working on this new project has been an absolute joy. I myself have a stepson of ten years old and a daughter of two. Digging deep into what’s available around us has meant the upcoming Summer Holidays will be a breeze - I’ll have options for both of the children come rain or shine. We’ve also included a few ideas of traveling further a field, so pack the picnic, cover them in sun screen and make a day of it (but don’t forget the umbrella ... just in case!). The team at Cariads Local Ltd hope you enjoy this first issue. We’ll be back again in time for the Christmas Holidays! If you are a local business or service catering for children aged 0 - 12 years old turn to page 25 to see more information about appearing in a future issue. A huge thank you to the many contributors, those who have supplied some super interesting articles. Thank you also to the Children’s Nurseries and Primary Schools, without your distribution help this magazine would have not reached the local families. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x

Does my child need swimming goggles? Swimming goggles are an essential piece of equipment for any child who is learning to swim or who just wants to have fun in the water. Being able to see clearly underwater will not only give children confidence as they learn, but will allow them to stay in the water longer. Wearing them for the first time can be a strange sensation, give goggles to young children in the bath or shower to get used to the feeling. Great tip from PSM Outdoors! www.ravendrama.com

Great range of Zoggs swimwear, goggles and floats for boys, girls, mum & dad too As the home of swimming, at Zoggs we want people of ages to enjoy everything that swimming has to offer – that’s why our selection of swimming costumes for children are ideal for leisure wear as well as for performance, making them just as great for wearing on holiday as they are worn to school swimming races. At PSM Outdoors we believe that kids should be introduced to water as early as possible to promote confidence and wellbeing. That’s why our Zoggs products are designed and categorised to suit a particular development stage. All of our packaging is colour coded indicating the relevant stage to help parents decide on the right products for their child. 1-Baby swimming. 2-Learn to swim. 3-Confident swimmer PSM Outdoors is open every day through the holidays.

There’s nothing like Organic Cotton Little Poppets pride themselves on the quality and ethical brands that they stock. Their 4 main brands are British, Kite Kids (Dorset), Frugi (Cornwall), Lilly & Sid (Rugby) and Emlie-Et-Rose (Devon). Kite Kids and Frugi only use Organic cotton or recycled materials, once you feel the softness there is no going back. Shop owner Shelly started buying organic cotton clothing for her daughter who suffered from severe Eczema as a baby and she still loves wearing it now at 8 years. Shelly tells us “Organic cotton is so much better for your child’s skin, it’s softer, has no nasty chemicals so is less likely to trigger allergies and best of all – it feels just lovely!. Having two children myself I know the importance of comfy, good value, quality clothes that last and last.” They have sourced brands using this ethos and have found planet-friendly clothing brands for children aged 0-11 years. The garments they stock are fun, colourful designs of the highest quality, and produced with the lowest environmental impact. Keeping prices in line with non-organic despite using premium organic cotton, they also ensure fantastic value for money.

Recipes, tips and advice for your own ‘Picky Pickers’ I doubt there’s a mum or dad anywhere who hasn’t at some point despaired at their son or daughter’s picky eating habits! Even if 99% of the time your child gobbles up everything on their plate, veg and all, there’ll be those times when lunch gets prodded suspiciously because you’ve used something different for a change. If anyone knows about dealing with picky or fussy eaters it’s local mum of four, Laura - “I was one myself, and still am in many ways, although my diet is now far more varied than the marmite toast I basically lived on until I was 8!”. When Laura had her children, she saw fussy eating from a whole new perspective. One of Laura’s children has autism and he’d be extremely finicky about what he’d eat. “He would tolerate pasta with either tomato sauce or pesto, and the only hot food he really enjoyed was a margherita pizza. The child wouldn’t even eat chips!” Laura tells us. It took a long time, and a lot of hard work from mum and dad, to help him accept the foods in the far more interesting, and balanced diet he now enjoys. With another son they faced further difficulties. He may not have loved everything they put on his plate, but he ate it all and had quite broad tastes for a little chap. However, when he was 5 he became ill and was diagnosed with a form of Irritable Bowel Disease. This meant a complete overhaul of his diet until medication could get his symptoms under control: no raw vegetables, no fruit or vegetable skins, no brown bread, very little dairy, and no chocolate or sweets! Add a nut allergy which he developed at the same time, and a gluten-free trial, and it was a bit of a nightmare! As you can see, Laura really does know first hand how hard it is to help a child accept a new food, especially when unhealthy habits have already been formed, and how tough it can be to be inventive when certain foods have to be restricted or stopped completely. Laura set up her blog pickypickers.wordpress.com to provide a wide variety of recipes which progressively allow for the introduction of new foods into their diet. The methods she suggests often involve introducing a taste very gradually, perhaps by adding more ingredients and flavours into a simple recipe over time (plain mashed potato can have cheddar cheese – first mild, building up to mature – grainy 16

mustard and spring onions added to make what she calls ‘grown-up mash’ for example). But most of all, the blog is about having fun with food, getting a bit messy and trying out new tastes and cooking styles to find what appeals to your child. Laura’s hope is that her Picky Pickers recipes, tips and advice will help to encourage children, and maybe even their parents, to try cooking and eating lots of lovely new foods together.

Ingredients: 4 tortilla wraps tomato passata grated cheese - cheddar & mozzarella work well fresh basil leaves a selection of yummy extra toppings - olives, sliced peppers (not green, your child may never forgive you!), capers, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, tinned sweetcorn, sliced ham, pepperoni ... go on, be adventurous!

Method: 1: Preheat the oven to 200c/400F. 2: Put the tortilla wrap on a baking sheet and spread over the tomato passata. Sprinkle over the grated cheese and some basil (I find I can get away with some torn up basil leaves on pizza even with children who recoil at the sight of anything green). 3: Add any yummy extras. 4: Bake for 8-9 minutes, until the cheese has melted and the base is crisp. Let the kids cut the pizzas into slices either with a knife and fork or a pizza cutter before they dig in!

A local Church with a great Café that welcomes families Just recently, St Mary’s Church in Brecon invited me to come along and check out the refreshments and facilities at the Church Café. I asked my sister and her little boy to accompany Cariad and me. For those who don’t know, the Church is in the very centre of Brecon Town. You can enter from both sides, one with steps and the other entrance has a ramp – nice and easy for people with pushchairs or wheelchairs. The first thing you’ll notice on entering the Church is the space, it’s vast and full of light, made possible by the glorious stained glass windows and high ceilings with handcrafted wooden beams. At the Café counter you will find a large selection of cakes on display, all locally made. Cariad spotted the chocolate brownie, so that was her order. Cousin George opted for a Gingerbread Man. Aunty Dee took a fancy to the carrot cake and I couldn’t resist a scone with clotted cream and jam. Both Dee and I decided to accompany our cakes with a Latte each. If looking for lunch, the menu consists of Paninis, rolls, salads and a soup of the day which is freshly made everyday. All very reasonably priced. We decided to sit near the playing area. Over the years the play area has grown due to its constant use by little ones. They have cleverly installed a fence around this area, meaning the children are safe and secure. I personally love this idea. I remember when Cariad was just starting to ‘bum shuffle’, whilst very cute looking it meant I needed to have eyes in the back of my head and be quick to dart after her if she decided to make a ‘shuffle’ for it! This play area means mum, dad or grandparents can chill and enjoy their refreshments whilst seeing the little ones exploring the new toys on offer.

After a little play, both children decided to come and tuck into their cakes. Dee’s cake was delicious, light and very tasty. My scone was freshly made and accompanied with the clotted cream and strawberry jam, it was divine. All washed down with some super tasting coffee. It was a Photo 1: Cariad Badham in hugely enjoyable morning, if the play area the children weren’t at the Photo 2: George Griffiths with table eating they were in Ginger bread man the play pen playing happily. Other parents were there with their children, it was great to see pushchairs up near tables without being in anyone elses way. The changing facilities were fab, a toilet and basin within the same cubicle as the changing table and they even provide nappy sacks. As trivial as this sounds, it makes the world of difference, especially to new parents – it can be a bit daunting when you first start to go out with your new baby. You may like to visit the Church Café child free, don’t worry it’s also possible to get some peace and quiet as you can seat yourself at the opposite end to the play area. During our visit there were many people sitting down enjoying a read of the newspaper. Outside seating is also available. It is clear that they cater for everyone. St Mary’s is a Church with a Café. Not a Café with a Church. On Tuesdays there is a 11.30am Service; on Fridays there are Midday Prayers. All these are run whilst the Café is open. On Sundays there is the Sunday Service at 9.30am and a Time Out Service at 11.30am. The huge space means that Services continue as they would do like any other Church. They even prepare a colouring area on a Sunday to keep little ones entertained so their grown-ups can focus on the Service. Keep your eye out for concerts throughout the year. St Mary’s you get thumbs up from the Badham and Griffiths family.Thank you for a most enjoyable morning and we’ll be back to sample your lunch menu soon. Children’s Fashion Forecast

Get Parents Outdoors!

Summer in Brecon? – it’s likely that we’ll see four seasons weather in one day so layers are key! Check out A Little Style’s long and short sleeve T’s as well as hoodies and cardigans.

Parents are constantly being advised that kids who play outdoors have been shown to be fitter, healthier, and more physically confident. That they need to get their kids away from technological entertainment, stop wrapping them in cotton wool and that unstructured play is crucial for developing a well rounded child. Then they will heap more guilt on a parent’s conscience by saying that they are not spending enough quality time with their children.

Brighten up even the dullest day in coloured denim. Turquoise, pink & peach for the girls and red, blue & turquoise for the boys. For the hot spots (hopefully we’ll get some here at home too!) we have a great selection of dresses, shorts & t-shirts. Nautical colours and stripes are a classic. Get ready for the holidays at A Little Style, 7 Lion Street, Brecon. Here’s a selection of A Little Style’s favourites ...

What they all seem to fail to mention as strongly is how they can strike that balance by sharing that experience in the outdoors together. This is not endorsing packing your rucksack, harrying the kids out the door shouting “Follow me!”. Then traipsing around the countryside getting them lost and feeling dejected for hours reassuring them it’s good for them. A far more beneficial experience is where both parent and child are outside their comfort zones learning to gauge and deal with any risk, experience

discomfort and adversity. That by sharing leadership and responsibilities through challenging adventures forges strong relationships. You never know we may get fitter, healthier, physically confident and well rounded parents! Putting parent and child on a level playing field to learn, fail, laugh, overcome and achieve together creates a far more memorable experience that will last a lifetime. The way to get out and experiencing the outdoors is varied and can be anything from making a daisy chain to base jumping, although starting with the latter could be seen as a little pushy. The outdoors provides limitless potential for forging relationships in challenging and stimulating ways and choosing the right adventure can be tricky, as it may not challenge everyone. That’s the beauty of outdoor adventures, there’s always something to challenge you whether its height, water, darkness, creepy crawlies or just the physical challenge.

, Christopher s Book Reviews: “Hi, I’m Christopher. I’m 10 years old and I live in Brecon. I love reading and review my favourite books at Christopher’s Corner on www.bookwormink.co.uk.” The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde

Aliens Stink! by Steve Cole

‘In the good old days, magic was powerful, unregulated by government, and even the largest spell could be woven without filling in magic release form B1-7g. Then the magic started fading away. Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange runs Kazam, an employment agency for soothsayers and sorcerers. But work is drying up. Drain cleaner is cheaper than a spell, and even magic carpets are reduced to pizza delivery. So it’s a surprise when the visions start. Not only do they predict the death of the Last Dragon at the hands of a dragonslayer, they also point to Jennifer, and say something is coming. Big Magic ...’

‘Some seriously weird stuff is happening on Planet Earth. Pollution is cleaned up overnight. A sweet smell fills the air. Strange lights are seen in the skies...Could they possibly be UFOs? Have aliens come to fix our world? Only one boy and his dad - and possibly his goldfish - know that the truth is stranger, scarier - and a whole lot smellier...Kidnapped and taken to a supersecret base, Tim discovers the full extent of the alien threat ...and the extraordinary kids fighting it. With the aid of a little huggy alien, and a depressed guard, Tim and his weird new friends take the battle to the aliens. Oh, and that goldfish has a big part to play...!’

This is the first book I’ve read by Jasper Fforde. It’s the first in the Dragonslayer trilogy and Fforde’s first children’s book.

‘Aliens Stink!’ is by the author of ‘Magic Ink’ and the Astrosaurs series.

The story is about a girl called Jennifer Strange. Jennifer is 15 years old and is left in charge of Kazam, an employment agency for magicians, when her boss goes missing. The agency doesn’t have much work at the moment because magic is dying out and magicians are reduced to taking on plumbing jobs. When the death of the last dragon is predicted, and it looks like Jennifer’s involved, she needs to somehow change the future. I liked the way Fforde mixed normal lives with sorcery, which somehow seemed to make the magic much more believable. Personally though, I would have liked his world to be more fantasy based, although it was quite cool that it’s set in places I know! Jennifer was a good heroine. I felt a bit sorry for her having no magical powers, but I liked her pet Quarkbeast, he’s a mixture of Labrador, velociraptor and kitchen blender, and was crazy! The book has lots of jokes, and is quite Terry Pratchett like in style. I was a little disappointed with the ending, but pleased there are other books in the series to pick up where this one left off. I think this book is good for boys and girls aged 10+.

24

This book is about Tim Gooseheart, his dad who’s a scientist, and his pet fish, Herbert. When weird stuff starts happening all over Earth, it’s only Tim and his dad who know the truth - aliens are invading! Tim and his dad (oh, and the goldfish!) are kidnapped and have to somehow find a way to defeat the aliens and save the day! My favourite character was the good alien Little G. He’s very cute when he goes around demanding hugs and smelling people’s tongues! In fact, my favourite part of the book was when Tim meets Little G. I really like stories about aliens and space, and I’m a big Steve Cole fan, so I was looking forward to reading this. However, I’m afraid it turned out to be not one of my favourite Steve Cole books, it’s certainly not as good as ‘Magic Ink’, which is brilliant. It’s still very funny and a cool story though, with some great illustrations by Jim Field, and would be enjoyed by children aged 8+. I think it’s more for boys than for girls.

Jasper Fforde is a local author, check out his website for a list of other titles for young adults and grown ups! www.jasperfforde.com

Can your child see properly? Did you know that up to 1 million children in the UK currently have an undetected vision problem? Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour – yet often goes unrecognised by teachers, parents and by children themselves. Children may not be aware or may not be able to explain their vision difficulties and - as a parent - you may not notice any problems. The sooner that vision problems are detected - the better the outcome. A sight test is free – why not have one? It is a great way to ensure that your child’s vision is not forgotten about. Sight tests are free for all children under the age of 16 and up to the age of 19 if still in full time education. At Jackson and Gill, their Optometrists are qualified to examine the eyes of all children, paid for by the NHS. Help towards the cost of glasses is also available on the NHS for all children. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read, as an eye examination can be carried out using pictures.

A great way to have mutual understanding and shared communication with your children? Makaton is a language support system used to support individuals with communication difficulties, for example, children with speech and language problems but it is useful for most children. With the popularity of Mr Tumble it is becoming more mainstream. Children can benefit from using the signs to communicate as their speech and language develops. When using Makaton you use the signs in speech word order as you speak. The signs are international so whether you are using Makaton signs in Cardiff or Cairo the sign would be the same. It is different from British sign language, BSL is a recognised language for the deaf.

All parents and children will have some mutual understandings that let you know what your child wants or needs, they might point to the bed when they are tired or point to the cup if they want a drink but these are often only shared between you and your child. By learning Makaton, or any language support system you offer your child, and those looking after them, benefit of mutual understanding and shared communication. Article supplied by Rebecca Golesworthy, Hay on Wye Here is a few signs to try with your little ones:

When I was teaching in mainstream school a child came into my class with global delay which affected her speech development. She was using Makaton signing at home with mum, so to be able to support her fully in school I undertook the Makaton course for parents and carers. As well as using Makaton in my work I have also signed with my own children. I have used signing with my two youngest and began to sign to them when they were about 6 months old, using the signs for milk, food, bed and drink. They began signing back when they were about a year old. I found that because they could express their needs in a way I could understand, they didn’t get as frustrated. If they were hungry they could sign ‘food’, if they were tired they could sign ‘bed’ etc. Of course this didn’t stop all the tantrums! As we know babies and toddlers are complicated creatures. Gradually I used more signs with them, specific food signs such as ‘apple’, ‘cake’, ‘orange’. Of course all children can point to items to tell you what they want, but what happens if they want an apple, for example, but you can’t see one to point to? The signs helped to support their expressive communication by giving them a means to express what they want even without the word. Our 5 year old no longer signs but I feel using the signs was a useful tool to aid his early communication. Our 2 year old is learning more signs to support his growing vocabulary and will use the signs he knows to express what he wants. He is fond of signing ‘cake’ when he is asked to eat his dinner and will often sign ‘bath’ and expect to go in the bath once he has expressed this wish - no matter that you are in local shop at the time.
