Hello Welcome to our October issue where we’ve now officially entered Autumn. I adore the changing seasons, the nights drawing in, the fantastic colours that change all around us, I even like the rain providing I’m tucked up indoors with the wood burner in it’s full glory.

The community magazine encouraging local residents to use what’s on their doorstep

For the town of Brecon and the surrounding villages

This issue we showcase Christmas. Unlike some local shops, we’ve held off until now! It’s time to think about the seasonal party, be it a family gathering or works do! Turn to page 24 onwards for a bit of help.

Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB

Those who are organised will have the Christmas shopping already in their stride, others will just have it on their to do list. Each year all we ask is that you start the shopping locally. We are very lucky to have boutique shops, independent stores and organised events that bring local crafts to light. Get what you can locally, then anything you can’t, go further afield or on-line. Local shops need our support to keep the towns alive. Use them or lose them. Remember if they go, local jobs will also go … Turn to page 28.

CHRIS DAVIES MP

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

Hello from Westminster! It has been a very busy time in our area over the summer and I have had the pleasure of going here, there and everywhere visiting all parts of my constituency. My thanks to those who organised events that I attended including the Glasbury Duckrace, the Felindre Village Fete, the Talgarth Festival, Painscastle Fete and Llyswen and Boughrood Fete. My family and I had a great time and it is promising to see these events going from strength to strength, year on year. Part of the joy of attending these events is being able to post photos and updates on my website (www.chrisdavies.org.uk) and on Facebook. But all too often I run into trouble in doing so – because of the sluggish broadband speeds we receive here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I believe that it is unacceptable that we have connection speeds up to 12 times slower than in parts of London. This not only affects our businesses but also our home and social lives too. High speed broadband is essential for our catch-up TV services, our internet shopping and for our businesses to operate effectively – and is also one of the biggest issues in my mailbag. That was the point I put to Ed Vaizey, the Minster responsible for broadband rollout around the country, in a recent debate. Remembering his visit to Brecon in February, the Minister responded that he wanted to see the whole of our region connected as soon as possible.

Surgery times and other contact details will be published very shortly. In the meantime, if you have any issues you would like to discuss please contact me by way of:

Peter Evans Independent Funeral Director

So now is the time to continue pushing for better broadband in our area and I can assure you that I will be tireless in my pursuit of achieving higher speeds for all my constituents. That is where I need your help. I want to hear from you on your own experience of broadband speeds and I encourage you to get in touch and share your views with me. I then want to take each case to the Minister to make him see firsthand how many of us are affected by this issue.

Serving Brecon, Crickhowell and the Usk Valley

That’s it for now, I do hope to hear from you soon on this or any other issue. You can contact me at:

Local Talent: Caroley Bergman

On leaving school, Caroley worked for 8 years In various London photographic studios, mainly fashion and advertising, before returning to college to study Mural Design at Chelsea School of Art, where she developed an interest in Stained Glass. Caroley moved to Wales with the family in 1977. She Became involved with Llandovery Theatre, designing posters, stage sets and painting the Medieval Mural in the Foyer. Later, in 2000 creating the Stained Glass Memorial Window for ‘ The Anne Marie Griffiths Gallery ‘ there. In 1987 Caroley started Yn Y Wlad Stained Glass and has completed numerous domestic commissions, her first commission being a window for The Drovers Restaurant in Llandovery, an internal skylight for the Victorian Gothic Hotel Bontduu Hall near Dolgellau, another skylight of 14, 7 foot long panels and two windows for the owners private residence. “My favourite commission for them was the 200 sq. ft. Painted Mural ‘Rupert The Bear’ for their children’s nursery. This depicted every character in the books and included Harlech Castle in the background.(Both these establishments have now reverted to private residences.) I have also created a 6ft. Two light Memorial window for Llangunnor Church, near Carmarthen.” In 1991, Caroley was selected by The Mail on Sunday to exhibit paintings (encaustic) with the at the 6th

International Contemporary Art Fair ‘Art London 91’ , to celebrate the Fall of Berlin Wall. Caroley has exhibited extensively at Design Shows and various Galleries in Wales and London and other areas, with work being shown on S4C Current Affairs program ‘Heno’ and in Stained Glass Source book. The Wales Craft Council purchased items of her copper foiled work to present to their Patron, the Princess of Wales. Caroley didn’t set out to be a teacher, but is passionate about people having the opportunity to be creative and she has been running workshops since being approached in 1991 to give workshops for Disadvantaged People, for Vales Community Business in Rhondda. This led to working with The Arts Factory in Ferndale for 12 years and Arts Care/Gofal Celf, in Carmarthen and evening classes for Coleg Powys. Her most recent residency being working with the pupils of Penmaes School Brecon, creating their Diamond Jubilee Window, from their own designs, and the Renovation of the St. John window project, at Brecon Cathedral, last year. Caroley works in all areas of stained glass, traditional methods of leading, copper foil, kiln fired painting and silver staining, acid etching and fused glass. She is inspired by pretty much everything around her; colour, light and movement and she works in many styles.

New in Town Name of the business? Rock Rose Events. Where are you based or in which area do you work? I am based halfway between Brecon and Builth, so enjoy total flexibility in terms of the area that I cover. The events that I have run so far have been mostly in Brecon. Why Brecon? I coach badminton in Brecon so I know and am known by a lot of the children and parents in the area. Why did you decide to open this shop/ business? Having worked as a sports coach for the last two years, I have realised that one of the most rewarding things in life is smiles. And there are not many things that bring more joy than children’s parties! My aim is to make sure that those children’s parties run as smoothly and stress-free as possible, so come armed with a plan, numerous games and the intention of letting imaginations run free. What are some of challenges you encountered? At the moment the business is very small, so corresponding challenges have (thankfully!) also been very small. It has been a case of working out which princess dress to buy and how to face-paint dragons. These are trying times!

birthday child, the entertainment is on me! I run a two hour party with games woven into one big, all-encompassing story in which every guest plays a part. I also provide going home gifts on request. That way, everyone goes home with a smile on their face, a new adventure to their names, and a small something to remember it all by. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Do what you love, and just go for it.

What do you wish you had known before you started? That advertising was going to be a hugely important part of setting up, that Facebook and Instagram are vital to gaining and maintaining interest, and all of the words to Let It Go. Is this the first business you have launched? It is! What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? I am a qualified badminton coach and fully CRB/DBS checked, so am very used to making sure that large groups of children have fun in a safe, controlled environment. Describe a typical day in your business: The type of outfit pulled on in the morning depends on whether the day’s theme is pirates, princesses and knights, a teddy bear’s picnic, a safari, or a custom theme chosen by the family. Decked out in a princess dress or with fabulously fluffy ears, I make my way to the venue. Armed with props and a present for the

Would you be a DIY seller to get a cheaper flat-fee?

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Rocketing property prices in some parts of the UK are pushing thousands of homeowners to sell through cheap online estate agents. Traditional High Street agents charge sellers a percentage of the sale price of their property — so the more your home is worth, the higher your fee. A typical fee is around 1.5 per cent plus VAT — but can be as high as 3.5 per cent. That means on a home worth £150,000 the estate agency fee can be up to £6,300. Online estate agents, meanwhile, charge a flat fee that can be as low as £395 including VAT, regardless of whether your home is worth £100,000 or £1 million.

Industry experts estimate that 4 per cent of all homes are now sold through an online agent annually — around 48,000 — and predict that internet firms could handle up to 50 per cent of all sales by 2020. Once you register with a firm online, it will get in touch to arrange for an agent to visit and value your home. Then someone will take photos, measurements for a floorplan and write the advert, which you will be sent to approve. You will then be given a ‘for sale’ board. The advert will be posted on property websites such as Rightmove. The internet agent will field any inquiries and organise viewings. Buyers can make an offer by calling or emailing the agent, which will negotiate the deal if you agree to it. In a rural area such as the Brecon Beacons it will be interesting to see if the online agents gain any traction. Either way it’s interesting to see how the internet is revolutionising another high-street industry.

Marking its 10th Anniversary!

Passion’ with Brecon Baroque and the cathedral choirs; and the Brecon Baroque Festival Orchestra performs music by Bach, Telemann and Pisendel to round off the festival. In between, Rachel also performs Bach’s ‘Art of Fugue’ with Brecon Baroque, and James Johnstone and John Butt are other high-profile visitors – the former plays organ music by Bach and his competitors for the job of Cantor at St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig, while the latter takes to the stage with Alison McGillivray in a programme of music for cello and keyboard including Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier.

Rachel Podger’s Brecon Baroque Festival marks its 10th anniversary with an exploration of Leipzig and the musicians who worked and visited there in the 18th century. Podger herself takes charge of the opening and closing concerts: Brecon Cathedral starts off proceedings with a performance of J S Bach’s ‘St John

The music doesn’t stop during the daytimes in Brecon, though – at the Muse on Glamorgan Street, visitors can drop by to experience performances, family-friendly arts and crafts activities, and refreshments in a recreation of Leipzig’s ‘Café Zimmermann’, a popular meeting-place in Bach’s time and the venue for the performances of many of his secular cantatas. Other events include dance workshops and tours of the historical buildings of Brecon. Brecon Baroque Festival takes place 23rd - 26th October. www.breconbaroquefestival.com.

Party game ideas for Halloween! Halloween shouldn’t be scarily expensive. If you are looking for some cheap thrills, or for your bonfire night party, here are five low-cost or free games that are guaranteed to go down a scream.

The chocolate game -You need: A big bar of chocolate, a scarf, some gloves or mittens (the bulkier the better), a hat, a knife and fork, a dice - and, ideally, lots of people. Get everyone standing around the table, and put the unwrapped bar of chocolate on a plate. Everyone takes a turn rolling the dice, and when someone gets a six, they have to sit down, put on all the gear and then try to cut off a piece of the chocolate with the knife and fork. If they manage it, they can pick up the piece with their fingers and scoff it (for hygiene reasons, it’s probably best not to eat it with the knife and fork). But while they are putting on the hat, gloves and scarf, everyone else is rolling the dice, and as soon as someone else gets a six, the first person has to stop immediately and let the other person sit down and put on the clobber

... and so on. It’s best played fast and frantic, with lots of people. The game ends when the last piece of chocolate has been munched. Apple bobbing - You need: A big bowl, water, apples. Fill up a bowl with water and chuck in several apples. Everyone takes turns to see how many apples they can remove in one minute using just their mouth/teeth. Removing the stalks makes it harder! Perhaps best not played with people who have streaming colds ... The flour game - You need: A bag of flour, a bowl, a knife, a plastic disc (a Connect 4 counter works really well), and a chopping board or plate. Warning: this is a messy one. Tightly pack the flour into the bowl, then put the chopping board or plate on top, turn the whole lot over, and gently lift off the bowl. With luck, you’ll have a flour ‘sandcastle’ standing on the chopping board. Then put the plastic disc on top. Using the knife, people then take turns removing a small slice. Eventually your flour

Please mention the Local Beacon when responding to adverts - 16 -

sandcastle will collapse. The person who causes this to happen must then remove the disc from the floury rubble using just their teeth. Some people use chocolate or a sweet instead of a plastic disc, though this can mean there is too much of an incentive to take a wrecking-ball approach ... The chocolate balls and chopsticks game - You need: Two small bowls, some chopsticks and some small, foil-wrapped chocolate balls or sweets. Put all the balls/sweets in one bowl. Each player then has one minute to transport as many as they can from one bowl to another, using just the chopsticks (if you can manage more than 20 in a minute, you’re doing well). Pin the wart on the witch’s nose - You need: A big piece of paper or card, a crayon or pen, a drawing pin, a scarf and some small stickers. This is basically a Halloween version of pin the tail on the donkey. Draw a big picture of a witch and pin it up on the wall. Each player in turn is blindfolded, spun around and led to the picture. They are then handed a sticker ... Closest to the nose wins.

Overcome, Conquer and Discover a new way of thinking, feeling and living.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in October

The “Beefsteak fungus” shown is edible and also is has an unusual economic value as its attack on oak makes the wood a darker, richer colour and hence more valuable as “brown oak” for the furniture industry. Fungi are an important and largely hidden part of the ecosystem and many plants, particularly Orchids, depend on their presence to thrive. They are more abundant than we realise as the toadstool or bracket we see is just a small part of the larger organism living underground or in rotting wood.

Beefsteak fungus Fistulina hepatica I apologise for the gruesome looking picture but this is just one of the more unusual things that you might see if you attend the Brecknock Wildlife Trust ‘Fungal Foray’ later this month. David Mitchell, who will lead the walk, found this delicacy on the 2013 foray as well as plenty of other toadstools and other fungi.

The Fungal Foray is on Saturday 24th at BWT Pwlly-Wrach nature reserve, Talgarth. Meet in Talgarth car park so that we can travel to the nature reserve together due to limited parking. Cost £3 per adult, suitable for all ages. The walk starts at 2pm. John Crellin.

Perhaps Pinnacle Essence can help Who do you know who has just redecorated a room in their house and needs a finishing touch? Who do you know who is particular about their home accessories and has to have them ‘just so’? Who do you know who loves finding quirky items to become features displayed in their home?

Perhaps Pinnacle Essence can help? Established in 2013, this small handcrafting business has grown steadily over the last 20 months. Initially focusing on made-to-order fabric memory boards, bunting and quilling, Sarah has expanded the range of home décor accents to include and specialise in bespoke lampshades. Sarah, who is the designer, creator, administrator, marketer and everything else behind the scenes, started Pinnacle Essence to fulfil her love of crafting, and has relished learning new skills to add more creations to her range. With a background in photography, Sarah is also well placed to offer Photographic Business Services to other local business, as well as capture

some stunning images of her own makes. Since moving to the area in 2012, Sarah and her family have fallen in love with the life Brecon has to offer. Her two young boys are big into the outdoors, and the family can often be found ‘popping up’ one of the fine hills and mountains that surround this beautiful location (in between the children’s increasing rugby and football commitments!). Inspired by nature’s beauty, Sarah regularly captures it in abstract, and is now able to turn some of those images into stunning lampshades or decorative candles. So if you would like to commission an individual piece for your home, or know of someone who might like a truly individual gift, why not get in touch with Sarah and see what she can offer you.

Bespoke, Elegant, Stylish designs, just for you. Specialising in lampshades, fabric memory boards, quilled creations and fine art photography. Pinnacle Essence are at Brecon Craft Fair on 17th October, 21st November & 5th December

Treating clients with respect & their wellbeing foremost... In 2002 Sharon qualified in Swedish Massage at the Mid Kent College in Rochester, Kent. The successful results she had with clients inspired her to learn more and the following year Sharon qualified in Spor ts Event Massage and Reflexology. Continued training over the years has given Sharon a wealth of information and techniques; each instructor teaches in different ways and shares a wealth of experience. Sharon has been privileged to train with the amazing Jane Johnson, London School of Massage, and also Damien Pritchard with Teach Therapy. “Donna Baldwin of The Retreat Brecon and I spent a day in London at a dissection day. Looking at the inside of the body was a revelation and changed our views on how we execute certain techniques on different muscles.”

After experiencing Thai Yoga Massage, Sharon attained a Diploma in Thai Yoga Massage at the Cheltenham School of Yoga, and attended further training in London with Master Trainer, Kira Balaskas who founded the School of Thai Yoga Massage in London in 1993, and the awesome Bob Haddad who teaches workshops internationally. In March this year Donna Baldwin of The Retreat Brecon, Rob Baldwin of Rob’s No Worries Yoga and Sharon’s Bodywork Clinic, joined together and moved into new premises in St Mary’s Street, forming The Wellbeing Centre, Brecon. “We each have the same aim and ethos, and that is to treat our clients with respect and understanding, and with their wellbeing foremost.”

At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Have you noticed the clock in the Market Hall in Brecon? It is over the doorway as you enter the Market Hall. There is another clock face on the other side of the wall inside the Hall itself. The clock was made by John Hando, Brecon to commemorate Colonel John Morgan who was created High Sheriff of Breconshire in 1898.

John Hando was born in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1854, and was working there as an apprentice upholsterer in 1871. During the next ten years he changed profession to watchmaker, moved to Brecon and in 1880 married Elizabeth Eaton. They lived in the Postern and in 1883 had a son Arthur John. Twenty years later in 1901, John and Elizabeth were living at 18 High Street – the property now occupied by Santander. The family was still there in 1911 by which time John described himself as ‘Managing Director Jewellery Business’. John was obviously respected as a watch and clock repairer in the town. In 1913 he was commissioned to repair the clock on the Guild Hall for which he was paid £21 (over £2,000 at 2015 prices). John died in 1919 but his clocks and watches remain as a testament to his work over one hundred years ago. There are at least five ways of telling the time in Brecon town centre. Can you list them? Answer next month. www.blfhs.co.uk

BRECON Poets:

PATRICIA DOUSE

This poem is based upon events that actually happened in Trinidad, from whence Patricia, now living in Libanus, originated.

CHACACHACARE Here, down the islands, now deserted, where US marines have come and gone; Likewise that millionaire who sought to launch a glitzy gaming house; on fields Where enchained Africans cropped cotton once; where piteous lepers sometime Paced, she walks in flowing white. Each wraithlike dusk, it’s said, she holds A shining lantern, swaying as she strolls. She had made solemn vows, wedded In faith to God the Son, an inward consecration to ideals transcending time. And yet she loved, oh how she loved, love of the very human kind, hard loins On virgin limbs, entangled flesh that must engender flesh anew. Perhaps it was A fisherman, conceivably a mariner, perchance a priest: now none shall know Her tale, save that, in shame, she either hanged herself upon the holy alter, blood On blessed blood, or else she flung herself into the surging tide, at one again with Her first, true, untainted love, an oscillating gleam of passion on a pristine shore. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.
