CHRIS DAVIES MP

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

Hello from Westminster! It has been another busy month of events and action here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I’d like to start by saying a huge thank you to all those who organised the Remembrance Day services I attended in Brecon, Glasbury and Hay-onWye. Each service struck exactly the right tone and I was honoured to lay wreaths to remember those who fought and fell in the service of our country. As many of you will know, lamb prices are still low and this is hurting our farmers. However, there is a market that we are currently not utilising as we could: The military. Our armed forces procure around £1 million worth of lamb each year and I want to see this market tapped. That is why I met with the Minister for Procurement in the Ministry of Defence, Philip Dunne, to push him to put more Welsh lamb on our armed forces’ table. The Minister was very receptive and will now push more military facilities to buy more local produce where they can. The Minister’s desire to see more Welsh lamb being fed to our servicemen and women is hardly surprising, as in Brecon and Radnorshire we know how to produce great produce. Indeed, when I questioned the Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Liz Truss, about our lamb she described Brecon and Radnorshire as a “food powerhouse”. It is great to see our area being recognised in this way in the highest echelons of government. Notably, she is not the only cabinet Minister to be recognising our area. Speaking to the Chancellor this week, he brought up how much he enjoys canoeing on the Wye and wandering the bookstores of Hayon-Wye. So next time you pop in to pick up your next bestseller, don’t be too surprised to see the Chancellor doing the same! I will keep on working to put Brecon and Radnorshire back on the map and if you want to contact me on the above or any other issue I would like to hear from you. You can e-mail me on chris.davies.mp@ parliament.uk or call me on 01982 559 180; and if you see me out and about do stop and say hello!

Plygain A Christmas custom once common across Wales was the Plygain (daybreak) service. This church service was held from 3.00am to 6.00am on Christmas morning. People would gather at the church - even walking from the farthest corners of the parish carrying their own candles. The light from the candles was an important part of the service. During Plygain, carols (carolau) were sung by men, never women, in three or four part harmony sometimes with Bible readings between the carols. The men would arrange themselves in small groups taking it in turns to come to the front of the church to sing. No songs or tunes were repeated during the whole service. Most people stayed up all night before going to Plygain. To keep awake women and young people made treacle toffee (cyflaith) and decorated the house with mistletoe and holly ready for Christmas day.

After the service a day of feasting and sport would begin. In Brecon football matches were held on Newton fields with local teams playing each other in a ‘friendly’ match. … And if you were a bit late getting up on Christmas morning, the last person to get out of bed was beaten with sprigs of holly – holming. www.blfhs.co.uk Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Love to sing? Join The Brecon Singers! In the past few years The Brecon Singers, a mixed choir directed by Jonathan Ling, has gone from strength to strength, performing many classical works. On Saturday November 7th 2015 in St Mary’s Church Brecon, the choir gave a rousing performance of the lyrical Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini featuring four fabulous professional soloists. The intimate atmosphere of St Mary’s Church Brecon seemed particularly appropriate for this Mass for a small choir accompanied by piano and harmonium and it was very well received. Their next concert will be Carols and Canapes in St Mary’s Church at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16th December 2015, with carols, readings, stalls, raffle and refreshments. This is a very popular seasonal concert so put it in your diaries! Tickets £8/Under 18s £5 on the door. Brecon Singers is a Registered Charity providing

high quality music for our local community. Staging concerts is expensive, so they need to raise money on a regular basis. Their thanks go to those who generously supported their recent Grand Draw. Tickets were drawn at the concert on 7th November – all prize-winners have been contacted. New singers join the choir on a regular basis, bringing fresh life to their performances. If you love to sing and can commit to weekly rehearsals, join them at Neuadd Goffa, Christ College, Brecon Wednesdays 7.30 - 9.30pm. (term time only). From January they will be rehearsing Faure’s Requiem for a performance in Brecon Cathedral in May 2016. For more information ring 01874 658332 or visit www.breconsingers.com.

The generation sleepwalking into old age poverty

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

A generation under the age of 40 is sleepwalking into retirement poverty — despite record numbers saving into a pension. Britain’s thirtysomethings are likely to end up with a private pension of just £271 a month — barely enough to cover household bills, new research has found. Startling figures show the average amount being saved into a pension has halved in just two years. On average workers are putting aside £4.70 for every £100 they earn. It’s likely to leave many with a nest egg of £56,000 — that’s an annual income of just £3,252. The fall in contribution levels has been blamed on the introduction of auto-enrolment, a governmentrun scheme to force every employer to offer their staff a pension. Anyone over 22, and who earns more than £10,000 a year, qualifies. By 2018 it will have forced even the tiniest employer, such as a family hiring a full-time nanny or gardener, to offer a pension. In this respect it’s been a success, with 5.4 million new savers contributing to a pension. There is a problem, though. The amount currently being paid in is nominal. Pension experts believe you need around twothirds of your pre-retirement income to enjoy a good standard of living in old age. To achieve this the younger generation will need to start prioritising saving for retirement over today’s financial needs. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

‘Breconshire Birds’ Annual Report – 2014 The ‘Breconshire Birds’ Annual Report for 2014 has just been published by Brecknock Wildlife Trust and is now available to purchase. This edition continues a long line of annual reports describing local birdlife sightings since 1962, and is the eleventh produced on behalf of the Trust by Andrew King, Brecknock Bird Recorder. Occurrence of 174 species seen within the old county boundaries in 2014 are described, with a further 4 races or sub-species. Considering the county’s geographic position, away from coasts and upland in nature, this is a healthy total and testament to the hard work put in by both local and visiting bird-watchers. One new species was added to the County archive – a Lesser Scaup duck – that spent four months at Llangorse Lake. The finding of this Canadian species, rare in the UK, is described in a separate article by Mark Waldron, and was made more fascinating by the bird having had a harmless bill-saddle fitted in Portugal in December 2013. As a result, the ability to track this individual from Portugal to Llangorse and afterwards to Yorkshire constitutes the first series of recoveries of a trans-Atlantic duck anywhere in Europe.

the Lake, with re-trap results contributing much about the life-cycles and movements of these birds within the UK and western Europe. A fine selection of photographs and sketches are also included in the Report that extends to 80 pages. Copies of the Report are great value at £7 (£8 inclusive of postage) from the Brecknock Wildlife Trust (01874 625708) either by post, or by collection from the Trust offices at Lion House, Bethel Square, Brecon, Powys LD3 7AY. Photograph: Gannet, Llangorse Lake - Keith Noble

Other unusual species include Siberian Chiffchaffs, Great White Egrets, Bittern, Gannet, Long-tailed Duck, Stone Curlew, Iceland Gull, Blue-headed Wagtail, Firecrest and Snow Buntings. Half of these were found at Llangorse Lake reflecting the importance of that site to birds, and its popularity with bird-watchers. Other species increasingly seen in Brecknock include Osprey, Mandarin Duck, Barnacle Goose, Jack Snipe, Nightjar and Shorteared Owl. National declines for Curlew, Lapwing, Lesser-spotted Woodpecker and Willow Tit are mirrored locally.

Left feeling rejuvenated...

Janice Clark

Trecastle, Brecon 07772061589 janiceclark@orange.net

Kinesiology was discovered in the 1960s by Dr. George Goodheart, who was also famed to be the first official US Olympic Team Chiropractor. It uses the theory of muscle testing to discover the real cause of health problems and symptoms. It’s a technique where the therapist is able to discover the underlying cause of your health issue – be it physical, nutritional or emotional. The body clearly communicates to the practitioner what it needs to get well. Janice has been practicing for many years but has only recently moved to the Brecon Area, working in Trecastle where she is easy to find and there is plenty of parking available for her clients. Janice was introduced to Kinesiology many years ago, having suffered from debilitating hayfever from the age of 18 -30 years. A friend told her of the amazing result she had from seeing a kinesiology therapist. So, in desperation, Janice who was at the time very sceptical of anything non-scientific went along for a treatment, and after two treatments has not looked back. Not only was she cured of her hayfever, but also converted so much so she took up the training having seen the amazing results that can be achieved from Kinesiology at first hand. The type of problems people turn to Kinesiology include tiredness and fatigue, poor immune system, allergies to foods and the environment, as well as nutritional deficiencies such as a lack of zinc in the body, which can be factors that lead to stress, anxiety and depression.

I went along with no particular ailments except feeling a bit under par and not really getting my full night’s sleep After the initial discussion Janice asked me to lie down fully clothed on the couch and relax before she proceeded through her treatment. She was then able to tell me of some items of food that my body struggles to deal with, which on consideration I agree with, and now realise that on eating them they do disagree with me, so I am trying to avoid them. But for me the most important result was I had a fantastic night’s sleep after my treatment and left her feeling rejuvenated. Janice is a very calm elegant lady who inspires confidence and makes you feel very relaxed in her company. She is very knowledgeable about the treatment she offers and was a delight to meet. If you would like to have an appointment with Janice she can be contacted on 07772 061589. She has also very kindly offered one free session with her to the winner of this month’s competition. Having also trained as a Reiki therapist, Janice uses both principles to deliver an excellent thorough treatment. For the initial consultation you need to allow a 1 ½ hours and any further treatments can be up to an hour. The cost of an initial consultation is £25 and follow up appointments are £20. Her rooms are beautifully decorated, very relaxing and peaceful. At first Janice will ask a number of questions about your health and general wellbeing to build a picture of where you think you are, she

Get to really know... David Rodway

osteopathic colleges from two to six, including the masters degree course at Swansea University. Do you ever do talks to local societies? Yes. WI, Round Table and so on. Favourite drink? Malbec or a nice pint of beer.

When and where did you qualify? In 1979 at the British School of Osteopathy, London, which at that time was in Buckingham Gate, Victoria. Why did you set up in Brecon? I was living here at the time. Subsequently my wife and I moved to Swansea as we like living by the sea, although Brecon is very pleasant. Do you enjoy your job? Very much. I still get a buzz out of working out what is wrong with a patient, treating them and seeing them improve . It’s also nice being in a job with one-to-one contact with people. Any downsides? Holidays are few and far between them. How long do you spend with each patient? Up to an hour on the first consultation, because you need time enough to take the history and examine them fully. I also like to have plenty of time to explain my findings to them and how I can help them, if I can. And up to half an hour on subsequent visits. Do you find you can help everybody who comes to see you? Not everyone. Having taken the history and examined them, sometimes I need more information, such as x-rays and blood tests. With a few patients I know, even without that extra knowledge, that I can’t help – they may have, for example, back pain referred from a kidney, chest pain due to shingles, jaw pain due to angina. It’s an essential part of being an osteopath to make sure you are only taking on patients with suitable conditions and refer the others appropriately, with a letter. I recently saw a patient with what he thought was a strained calf muscle; when I examined him it was in fact a DVT so I packed him off to A & E with a note. Diagnosis is the key to successful treatment and clinical vigilance is essential. How long have you been at the Brecon Complimentary Medical Centre? Since the GPs set it up in the Tannery building over fifteen years go. I was one of the original group of practitioners they invited in. Has the osteopathic profession changed much since you started? The biggest change was the Osteopaths Act in 1992 which established the General Osteopathic Council to regulate professional, educational and ethical standards, and the increase in the number of

Favourite Song? Helpless by Neil Young Favourite singer? Jackie Leven, who died a couple of years ago. Favourite Bands? The Band and The Black Crowes. Favourite food? Cassoulet. Children? Two – Thirty and Twenty five (strange names for children, I know). Hobbies and Sports? Cycling, swimming, learning the saxophone. What’s the furthest you have cycled in one day? 100 miles – Cardiff to Tenby. What exercises do you recommend for your patients? It depends on their condition, but generally the best exercise is whatever you enjoy the most, especially if its walking, swimming, dancing, Pilates, Zumba or Tai Chi. Some exercise are completely inadvisable, like head and shoulder stands. Posts in the profession? External examiner for GOsC FCC exams, coöpted member of the GOsC communications committee, trained as an SJE expert witness, current chairman South Wales Osteopathic Society, lectured to osteopaths on whiplash, written for British Osteopathic Journal , Osteopathy Today, and The Osteopath. Dream Job apart from Osteopath? Author. Favourite Films? Alien, Blade Runner, Amelie. Currently Reading? The Lunar Men by Jenny Uglow. Favourite city? Prague, so far. Favourite TV programme as a child? The Prisoner. And now? Question Time, Have I Got News for You , Later with Jules Holland, and Rugby Internationals. Favourite Comedians? Peter Cook, Russel T Hunter, Ricky Gervais, John Sparkes. What magazines do you buy? Private Eye, New Scientist and sometimes a car magazine. Most famous person you have ever met? Princess

Diana, when she was patron of the old General Council and Register of Osteopaths. Anyone famous you would like to meet? Professor Steven Hawking. Teenage crush? Jane Birkin, Susan George and Jacqueline Bisset. Most prized possessions? My health, my faculties, my books and music. Can you remember your car history? Simca 1100, 1967 MGB GT, Ford Escort XR3, BMW 323, BMW 535, Saab 99, Audi A4 Avant. Worst was the MGB, best were the 323 and the A4. What annoys you? Bullies, bad grammar, petty regulations, cars driving too close to cyclists. Any hidden talents? Comprehensible French, organising sponsored bike rides. Faults? Perfectionism leading to procrastination. Any regrets? That my children have grown up, and I did not learn the piano. Any further ambitions? Run my own bar in a ski resort , learn to dance, take up canoeing.

pollination without any need for showy petals. The Holly Blue butterfly, which is being seen more frequently in Brecknock, depends on Ivy flower buds as well as those of Holly which are available early in the spring. This allows this attractive butterfly to have two generations per year, one fed mainly on Ivy and the other on Holly.

Hedera helix Ivy flowers through into November and beyond providing the last major source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects at that time of year. The dark blueish-black berries will be abundant in many places now. The photograph I think shows that the seemingly dull flowers are worthy of a close look. Glistening nectar can be seen surrounding the stigma and this attracts insects by smell for

Both plants were thought to have magical powers in the past, particularly in subduing house goblins, and have long been associated with Christmas and the New Year. There are more work parties at Pwll-y-Wrach on the 1st, 8th and 15th. The Wildlife Trust Christmas meal is at Tipple ‘n’ Tiffin, Canal Wharf, Brecon. Booking is essential. Contact Clare Morgan. A thriving, friendly organisation...

Now four years old, Brecon Business Club is a thriving, friendly organisation, with 36 members, and a reputation for making a significant difference to local charitable groups, having raised well in excess of £20,000 since 2011. Its most recent event was the charity ball at Dering Lines, generously supported by the Officers’ Mess and Sodexo; at this event alone a staggering £8,853 was raised to be shared between Usk House with St David’s Hospice Care, and Tŷ Hafan, the children’s hospice. Nearly 140 people attended the event, and were treated to singing by Alive & Kickin’, Brecon’s Community Choir, a delicious dinner served by the Sodexo staff, photography courtesy of Tin Wheeler and live entertainment from local band 4C. Guests partook willingly and generously in the auction which was run by Gareth Griffiths from Clee, Tompkinson & Francis, and dancing continued well into the night... The two beneficiary charities are extremely grateful to the club, and all the individual members who contributed raffle or auction prizes, attended the ball and even contributed again by bidding in the auction!

REVIEW

Afternoon tea - A perfect treat! This month Lynda and I were delighted to be able to enjoy afternoon tea at the Bijou Café in Brecon.

Bijou’s traditional afternoon teas are available most afternoons and are served usually from 3pm. Jane and Keith do ask that you pre-book to reserve a table with 24 hours notice required. With notice they are able to adapt their usual menu to cater for special diets such as vegan or gluten free. Jane and Keith made us feel very welcome on our arrival. Keith showed us to our table, which had been reserved for us in one of the two hidden rooms tucked away upstairs. Our table was laid out ready for us with beautiful vintage crockery. Keith served us with a pot of their speciality tea from the ‘Lawns collection. Alternately they do have a choice of Twining’s infusions and teas, and if you prefer coffee they are happy to serve you with a coffee of your choice. The room was beautiful and cosy. The pretty décor was modern with a traditional twist, Lynda and I agreed on - vintage chic. Relaxing music was playing in the background as we settled down to enjoy our afternoon tea, which was shortly served to us on an impressive three tier cake stand. Bijou Café specializes in vegetarian and vegan dishes. Jane and Keith have two menu options available to choose from.Their standard afternoon tea for two is £22 and includes the following: a selection of freshly made sandwiches, rolls \ wraps which vary daily, hand baked potato crisps and a salad garnish, scones, local jam and clotted cream and homemade cake. Lynda and I had the special high tea for two, which is £28 and includes as above and also includes: homemade savory pastries, salad and a selection of homemade cakes and mini desserts. You can also add a glass of Prosecco for £4.25! As it was all so beautifully presented, I obviously had to sample each of the sandwiches and pastries, and I can honestly say they were all as delicious as they looked. Egg and tomato, beetroot and cream cheese, cheddar

and homemade pickle... all delightful! My favourite was the red pepper and goats cheese pastry, which was just so tasty that I had to take another home for my mum to try... and she agreed!

If you think the savory treats look amazing, wait until you see the sweets! Lynda and I were so excited when we saw the cakes, syllabub, scones and biscuits! We both couldn’t wait to tuck in. Jane told us both that there are healthy options for the cakes. For example, we sampled the lemon drizzle cake, which I absolutely loved, this cake was vegan, made with no eggs or milk and used whole lemons, and the chocolate and beetroot cake was made with sunflower oil which made the cake very light. Although there are healthy cakes available, there are also standard cakes such as the coffee and walnut cake, which Lynda was a big fan of! We were both very fond of the white chocolate and lemon syllabub with the strawberry on the top… mmm… After sampling everything, we were both too full to take another single bite, but there is no need to feel as if you’ve wasted the delicious treats as Jane and Keith provide pretty boxes for you to take your leftovers home, and I’m not going to lie, I had another cake and a scone with jam and cream that evening and I also finished the sandwiches for lunch the next day! After we had finished, Lynda and I discussed how the two rooms at the top were perfect for afternoon tea parties, such as family get togethers or hen do’s as the rooms are available to book. Anyone looking for gift ideas, vouchers are available. This would be a perfect treat for Christmas. Lynda and I both highly recommend afternoon tea at the Bijou Café. We cannot recommend the food, service and atmosphere highly enough. We loved it. Thank you Jane and Keith. Nicole Williams

Events for all of the family!edf Brecon Farmers Market usually takes place on the second Saturday monthly, but this month there are two Christmas markets. Each one brings the best of local produce, speciality foods, locally brewed ales and specially prepared foody gifts to Brecon. The first Christmas Farmers Market is on Saturday December 12. Simon Mackenzie-Mason from The Gourmet Gardener (and chairman of the Brecon Farmers Market steering committee) says: “This will be an event for all the family with music provided by South Powys Youth Music, a Christmas raffle and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus who will be in his Christmas Grotto with gifts for the children (a small fee will be charged). “Come along and meet the makers, sample their food and find the perfect present for the person who seems to have everything.” The Farmers Market Café, run by Love at First Bake, will be serving delicious Christmas themed cakes (all gluten free) and customers can also create a picnic lunch using food bought at the market and eat at the tables provided. Teri-Ann Winslow from Love at First Bake says: “The cafe is a great meeting place for friends and family, with live music playing, and it’s a little haven from the bustle of the market.” The second Christmas Farmers Market is on Sunday December 20 and this will provide another opportunity to stock up on Christmas poultry, local meat & charcuterie, fresh game products, Christmas cakes and puddings, chutneys and pickles, cheeses, artisan bread, vegan pies, real ale, cider, mulled wine, honey, fresh olives, nuts and much, much more including craftsman made turned wood products and hand woven accessories. Nigel Devlin from Caroline’s Real Bread Company has some advice for customers. He says: “Bring a large basket with you as there is so much tempting food at the Christmas markets you are sure to need one!” For more info visit www.breconfarmersmarket.co.uk or call 07926 196714. Brecon Farmers Market can also be found on Twitter @breconfarmersM and on Facebook.

The Fair aims to showcase and support the local artisans and crafts people who live on the Estate or close by. The Fair has become an annual feature, and builds on its successful past. We are introducing some new stalls and a different layout within the house and outbuildings. This year the Fair will be the biggest yet, and will offer a fantastic selection of individual presents to satisfy all tastes and price ranges. Stalls will be selling: Clothing, Jewellery, Ceramics, Antiques, Moroccan and Nepalese goods, Books, Christmas Food, Chocolate,Wine, Plants, and Baskets, to name just a few. Penpont artists: Robert MacDonald, Morag Colquhoun, Tessa Waite and Simon Royer will be exhibiting new work. Gareth Irwin of Penpont Green Wood will be in residence exhibiting and displaying his skills.

This year’s pop up Café will be hosted by the Barefoot Penn sisters all the way from New Zealand. They will be cooking up organic vegetable soups, and delicious cakes and biscuits, and treats with a seasonal antipodean twist. The Farm shop will be open on both days, so you can stock up on your organic veg for the festive season. And of course - Christmas Trees. We have now been selling Estate grown Trees to the local community for 23 years. You can choose from a selection already cut at the front of the house, or take yourself off to the adjacent paddock to choose and cut your own, from non-drop Firs to the traditional Norway Spruce, and many sizes to suit all needs. So come and enjoy all the fun of the Fair. Doors will open at 10.00am each day. Be prepared to park in a field, so if you have a 4x4 please bring it.

News from Trallong & Penpont W.I. The June meeting was held in Trallong Church Hall when Sally Morris spoke about the excellent work being done at Usk House in Brecon. This wonderful facility is widely used by both cancer sufferers and their carers. These days almost one in two families will have a member who will at some time in their lives have cancer. We must support the fund raising activities of this local charity whenever they have organised an event. Ruth proposed a vote of thanks to Sally. Heather Thomas told members about the wonderful day she had had at the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace when she was Trallong’s representative. Barbara Jones spoke about her visit to Beaumaris to view the panels made by each of the thirteen counties of Wales to commemorate the centenary of the W.I. The tea hostesses were Eryl Liddell and Heather. The competition “What makes you smile?” resulted in a win for Sue Goodhead, with Mary Adams 2nd and Valerie Williams 3rd. Sue also won the raffle prize given by Marjorie Davies. The July meeting took members to visit the beautiful gardens of Rosemary Payne near the village of Cray. On a beautiful summer’s evening we all admired the lovely flower beds, the luscious vegetables and summer fruits, the trees and the shrubs – all looking at their best. As we walked around the gardens, asking questions as we went, Rosemary gave valuable tips and spoke of her love of gardening from a young age. The competition – the best gardening tip was won by Ruth – who thanked Rosemary for hosting the evening and invited her to join the members for a buffet supper at the Tanners Arms in Defynnog. August is the month for the annual trip which this year took members to Tredegar House – with Eleanor Prosser acting as chauffeur. Thank you Eleanor. September’s meeting was held at the Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre when the speaker was Martin Griffiths, the Senior lecturer in Astronomy at the University of South Wales. He spoke of the Dark Skies Wales iniative – again Ruth gave thanks. Tea hostesses on this occasion were Mary Adams

and Christine Evans. The competition – a sentence from the word Astronomy, was won by Barbara with Joy 2nd. Trallong and Defynnog & Sennybridge W.I’s joined forces to take par t in the wonderful vintage parade organised by Mervyn Prosser at Sennybridge Show. Barbara, Megan and Jackie enacted a prewar laundry scene and were delighted to win 2nd prize for their float. Chris Evans was responsible for the flower arrangement on the W.I. stand in the Craft tent, while Val, Jean, Gill and Mary Adams sold raffle tickets. October was the birthday month when we celebrated our 90th anniversary. Past members were invited, together with the County Chairman, Margery Davies and Vice-Chairman Diane Jackson. Margery entertained us with stories of events which took place 90 years ago including the introduction of double decker buses with covered tops. Nearer to home, Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis began to construct the village of Portmeirion. Our hall was decorated for the occasion with colourful bunting – there was a wonderful display of photographs and memorabilia. Paul Edgley came and took two photographs – one of the current members and another of all those present. Supper was served by Megan, Lisa and Margaret, during which the birthday cake, made by Jean and beautifully iced by Gwyneth Williams of Sennybridge was cut. The flowers were again done by Chris – almost all grown in her own garden. Delyth Taylor sang a varied programme of solos – her accompanist was Alan Davies. Margaret thanked the entertainers and Ruth for organising the very successful evening. The raffle prizes were won by Beryl Price, Mary Adams and Jean Jones. Everyone present had a gift of soap, given by Ruth Jefferies and made by Beacons Creative Wales at their workshop in Brecon.

BRECON Poets: PATRICK DOBBS This month’s poem is by Patrick Dobbs who has been a colt-breaker on the Canadian short-grass prairie, a mill-hand in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and a cattle drover in the Ontario stockyards. He has lived for over half a century on a small mountain farm in the Brecon Beacons and recently helped establish the Dinefwr Poetry Group.

CASTING SPELLS Beware magicians with a magic spell To save the suffering and the malcontented. What’s the problem? They can get you well From every ill that’s ever been invented. A guru by the Ganges promised me A place in paradise if I adored him. A Christian preacher told me I would see The joy of heaven if I knelt before him. A little man with a small black moustache Convinced his volk they were the master race. His methods were both bellicose and harsh, But in the end it ended in disgrace. I’ll leave you with a thought I think profound --It’s better to be sceptic than spellbound. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@ yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.
