Welcome to our August issue – Jazz and Fringe month for the town! Yet again we are proud to be producing the Guide for the ‘Jazz Weekend’ as it’s known locally. There has been uncertainty around town due to the organisers of last year’s event pulling out. Well luckily for us Brecon Jazz Club, the Cathedral, Theatr Brycheiniog, and other organisations have worked together to put on a superb line up of Jazz events. Local venues are true to form and have fantastic acts performing over the weekend as part of the Fringe. This year we’ve altered the title to the Brecon Jazz / Fringe Guide. Please support the local businesses, day or night. Let’s make this a cracking weekend to set a high bar for next year. In this issue we have two fabulous question / answer features. Sean Crawford appears on page 7, a huge local talent in our area. We’re extremely lucky to have three of his photographs in our 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar. Sarah Lewis is this month’s Get to Really Know… Dealing with Sarah over recent years has been a joy, but who knew of her hidden talents?! Read more on page 17. This month we say good bye to our Sales lady Lynda Like. Her commitments elsewhere have increased so it was time to hang up her sun hat. We will certainly miss her cheery voice in the most stressful situations, and I’m sure many of our advertisers and contributors will miss the chats. Good news for us, Laura Williams will be taking on this role. Laura lives in Brecon, shops local where possible and with four active boys is constantly involved in the local clubs and family events. Laura has been part of our team for some years. Lynda leaves Cariads Local Ltd very relaxed … read reviews on pages 19 and 35. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: Lisa and Otis Badham on their recent holiday)

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Well, well, well – what a few weeks we have had in politics! We have voted to leave the EU, the Prime Minister has resigned and, closer to home, I’ve been pushing the Government on bank closures and tourism VAT issues in the House of Commons. And some people say politics is dull! The referendum was a highly charged debate, with points, stats and arguments flying around on all sides; dividing communities, families and friends alike. Indeed, a number of people are calling for a second referendum. While I do understand this call, I am afraid that I do not agree. I do not see the referendum as a game where, if you lose, you can simply have a ‘do-over’. The referendum was not about winning and losing, rather about whether there was a majority in favour of staying in or leaving the EU, and the outcome should be respected. Though I am pleased with the result (as a brexiteer myself), now is time for unity. It is time for us to put aside our differences and accept the will of the people. We should work together now to create a strong relationship with Europe that above all is in the British interest. Closer to home, I have been speaking in the House of Commons on two issues that are deeply affecting our area. First, I made a speech to push Government to act over local bank branch closures. It is not acceptable that banks are willing to remove essential financial provision from local people and local businesses. I will continue to fight closures and look at alternative options to keep the banking provisions our area needs. Second, I have raised the issue of high VAT rates on our tourism industry with the Government. The UK has one of the highest VAT rates on tourism anywhere in Europe and I believe it is holding back our industry. I am pleased that the Government will now seriously consider what more can be done to help the tourism industry across the UK, including looking at changing VAT rates.

Local Talent: Sean Crawford
Type of Artist? Fine Art and Landscape Photographer. Range of Products? I mostly take landscape photos. My black and white work is closest to my personal vision, but more and more also use colour. I make beautiful, almost velvety prints, using really high quality papers and inks (and lots of heartache as I find printing frustrating!). I also sell cards. I’ve started to make use of social media, and now have a lot of work on Facebook and Instagram (on both as Sean Crawford Photography). I’m keen for people to come and follow me there! Where can your products be purchased? Prints can be bought directly from me; I can print up to most sizes. Cards also direct from me at the moment, though they’ve previously been for sale at Booths and other outlets. I need to restock them, and find some new outlets! Prints can also be purchased online via Saatchi Art (http:// www.saatchiart.com/seancrawford) and I occasionally supply pictures for publishing uses such as book covers. Price range? Prints range from just a few pounds for a simple un-mounted print up to hundreds for large framed pieces. How long have you been an artist? I started taking pictures when my parents gave me a camera as a youngster – that’s at least 30 years ago. I learned slowly in the days of film, helped with a couple of books that I had, and waiting patiently for films to get developed and printed. Where did you train or gain experience? I have never trained as a photographer, at least in the formal sense. I’ve crafted long and hard, read books, looked at what other photographers do, tried to understand the history (and even sometimes the philosophy!) of photography. Probably more important though has been spending huge amounts of time outdoors, at all hours of the day, walking and watching and developing my understanding of the land and weather. In recent years since buying my first digital camera my experience and understanding of what makes a great picture has improved immeasurably. I may still only take the occasional great image, but being able to see your photo immediately (then later tweak images at home in Photoshop) has helped me more quickly
learn the arts of composition, light and atmosphere. What has been your proudest moment? Probably commercially, it would have been my first commissioned book cover many years ago now – not least because it paid for a brilliant holiday in the Outer Hebrides. A fun moment was when I took a photo of Pen Y Fan 2015’s almost-total eclipse, which I later realised inadvertently included an unknown couple getting engaged – him down on one knee, champagne and all that. It went a bit viral, and a nationwide ‘hunt’ led eventually to them being identified. It turned out that, fearful that his plan to propose during the eclipse would be thwarted by cloud cover at home in Scotland, he’d driven them through the night and eventually came to a stop at Mynydd Illtud of all places, where I lay in wait to watch the eclipse… And having three of my images being selected for the Local Landscapes Calendar 2017! What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? On 20th December 2015 I took a series of what I think are very beautiful pictures of the Olchon Valley – the light was sumptuous! Have you any future plans for your work? Continue to learn, and develop my artistic vision. Travel further, more often. Selling a few more prints and commissions wouldn’t be awful either. What advice would you give a local artist? At one point I tried to get more ‘commercial’ and started doing things that weren’t really me. I learned from that. I’d say work hard, be yourself, don’t overthink what you do too much. I’d encourage photographers in particular to learn the mysterious arts of composition, and learn as much as they can from other visual art forms such as painting and fine art printing. What other local artists do you admire? Where to start – there are far too many. For landscape photography, Matt Botwood’s work is interesting and unique, and showcases his own intimate understanding of his own local landscapes in the southern Brecon Beacons. Bronte Woodruff is a hugely talented painter based in North Herefordshire as is Alison McGregorGrimley. My mum also paints beautiful ethereal landscapes and seascapes on silk papers.

Get to really know... Sarah Lewis Born Sarah Walters in Cardiff but brought up in Brecon. Sarah saw that Brecon needed a Chamber of Trade, so in January this year she set about relaunching it and is now its Secretary. Place of birth? Cardiff. Where do you live now? Brecon. Occupation? I work part-time for Chris Davies MP and the rest of the time for the Brecon & Radnor Conservative Association. Children? Four; two boys aged 19 & 23 and two girls aged 17 & 21. Pets? Three dogs and a cat. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Blue Peter. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A songbird, hopefully a thrush or a blackbird because of their stunning songs but given my voice I’d probably end up croaking like a crow. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Mending broken hearts. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? What’s the weather like and where shall I walk the dogs this morning – Penlan,The Groves or Mynydd Illtyd? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? How much have I got to do tomorrow? Do you believe in ghosts? Yes – when he was a child my dad saw a ghostly funeral cortège in Llanfrynach. He described it in such detail and I believe in every word he said. Most exciting thing you’ve won? The only thing I have ever won was a bottle of “Charlie” perfume many, many years ago from Radio Luxembourg for getting Elvis Presley’s middle name right. The answer was “Aaron”, I was about 13 years old and the perfume wasn’t that nice! Two lessons life has taught you? Spend time with loved ones and laugh a lot. What makes you grumpy? Not enough time to do what I want to do. Teenage crush? James Hunt, total hero and bad boy! You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Some would be given to my family and some would go to animal charities.
Have any bad habits? Indecisiveness – a typical Libran trait.
Which bad habits drive you crazy? Rudeness, selfishness, bad grammar and bad punctuation and people who drop litter. What have you done in your life that would surprise someone meeting you for the first time? As a child, I lived in Pakistan for four years. What book would you recommend to others? The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. Best present ever received? The love of my children. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I’d love to be able to sing properly. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Galapagos. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Learn to sing, own a Morris Traveller, learn more creative skills, go to Pompeii and visit the High Line in New York. What’s your favourite song of the moment? The Sound of Silence by Disturbed or Send my Love by Adele. What’s your favourite song of all time? Depends on my mood, but it will be either The Cross by Prince, Wind beneath my Wings by Bette Midler, Piano Man by Billy Joel, In the Ghetto by Elvis, The Boxer or Cecilia by Simon & Garfunkel or pretty much anything by Talking Heads or Edith Piaf. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Have a meal with friends and a couple of bottles of wine with some great music in the background. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Walk along the Pembrokeshire coast with my dogs and then spend time in the garden. Have any hidden talents? I can speak French pretty much fluently and I can do upholstery. I also did Weaving “O” Level, so I can spin and weave. I’ve also helped work on a Gold medal winning Show Garden at Chelsea, thanks to Harry & Dave Rich! What would be your dream job? Something creative, whether it’s indoors or outdoors, I wouldn’t mind. It would also have to be flexi-time, so that I could dictate when I work. Sum yourself up in five words: Stubborn, emotional, determined, organised and arachnophobic!

REVIEW
“ That night I slept incredibly well...” Gina has for many years been known for her Mediumship for which she is very well respected and incredibly busy, but she has also for many years been a full trained in Reflexology and Deep Tissue Massage. So when she offered me the opportunity to review a reflexology treatment, I was thrilled to oblige! Gina’s practice is just outside Llyswen where there is easy parking and is very easy to find. As all therapists do, Gina took some personal details. She then placed my feet in a wonderful warm footbath for a few minutes, my feet were then dried before I popped up onto the couch, which she had placed a heated pad on, and so this was a lovely warm couch to lie on with a blanket on top. Reflexology is based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands, and head linked to every part of the body, so by placing pressure on these points you can alleviate a problem in another part of the body that is connected to that particular
reflex point. Reflexology can aid many health conditions as well as being deeply relaxing.
I thought there was going to be a lot of prodding of my feet, I understand this is the way some reflexologist work, but Gina’s method is more of an amazing foot massage, ensuring areas that she felt not flowing properly were worked just a bit harder. From her massage she was able to tell me some of my problem areas such as lower back, shoulder and stomach. There was a noticeable improvement of my unsettled stomach and lower back after the treatment. The treatment lasted about an hour. Afterwards I felt very thirsty and needed to drink a lot of water, but that night I slept incredibly well! A reflexology treatment is £35.00. Lynda Like Get £5 off for the first treatment until 31st August 2016 when presenting the below advert.

And fix a poster to your back Announcing ‘Go ahead and smack This one-time persecutor who Enjoys a hearty thump or two!” And whisper: “He is still alive,
THE RECKONING
Who you called ‘Mouse!’ in Forty-Five”.
You peppered me with painful clouts When we were eight or thereabouts And bent my thumbs and burnt my wrists And trashed my stomach with your fists And hid my shoes and blocked my paths And stole my book of autographs And taunted me and mocked my name…
Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@ yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.
…but now you need a Zimmer Frame. Your frail hands tremble, you are weak, The spittle flutters as you speak; Through pebble spectacles you peer And greet me with a timid stare, Yet apprehend that danger lurks – Too well you know how weakness works. Ah, what a chance to settle scores And swathe in dressings ancient sores, For I have kindly dealt with time (Compared to you I’m in my prime) And could convulse you with one blow, As you did me, so long ago.

Get crafting with the kids this summer! Fab Crabs
Explorer’s Bag
Turn beachcombed finds into shoreline critters that’ll help keep holiday memories alive. For each crab, paint a clean, dry shell with acrylic paint and let it dry. Cut three pipe cleaners in half. Twist five halves together at the center. Glue the twisted center to the inside of the shell with kids’ craft glue and let dry. Spread out the pipe cleaners so that each side has five legs. Cut the remaining pipe cleaner half in two, then fold the end of each front leg around a half to form the claw. Bend the section ends to create claws. Glue on googly eyes.
Summer Souvenir Bowl Turn paper souvenirs from your holiday into a container to show off your family’s happy memories.
This mesh sack lets naturaltreasure collectors leave sand, water, and dirt behind. Fold over the top two inches of a plastic mesh produce bag. such as an onion net (fold outward, not into the bag). Cover the resulting flap with a layer of gaffer or parcel tape. Unfold the bag so the tape is on the inside. Make a handle by folding a 14-inch length of gaffer/ parcel tape in half lengthwise. Adhere the ends of the handle to the tape on the bag. Cover the exposed tape with another layer of tape, sandwiching the handle in between. If the bag is open at the bottom, fold a length of tape over it. Patch any holes in the bag by sandwiching them between two pieces of tape. Use your explorer’s bag to carry all your rock-pool and beachcomber finds!
Cut out 1-inch paper circles from colored paper and printed material from your trip – maps, brochures, tickets, photos, and so on. Ask a grown-up to help with the cutting! 45 to 65 paper circles should be enough. Wrap the outside of a cereal bowl in cling-film; try to keep the film as smooth as possible. Place the bowl upside down on greaseproof paper. Brush kids’ craft glue onto a section of the wrapped bowl near the rim. Add a circle, then brush the top of the circle with more glue. Continue adding circles, overlapping them slightly to prevent gaps. Let the bowl dry completely. Remove the paper bowl from the original bowl and gently peel off the cling-film. Paint the inside of the bowl with acrylic paint in a vibrant colour.

Photo from the collections at Brecknock Museum Brecon Show The Brecknockshire Agricultural Society was founded in 1755 with the purpose of “encouraging agriculture and local manufacturers, and the promotion of the general good of the county”. By 1810 the Society was offering prizes to the farm labourers and boys who drilled and hoed the greatest number of acres of turnips. This together with other prizes for the growing of turnips by landowners was a way of introducing a new crop to the county. At first there was a distinct ‘dislike and hatred of innovation which characterizes the county’ but eventually turnips were accepted as a valuable food crop for animals. The Brecon County Show, organised by the Society, has traditionally been held on the first Saturday in August. In the early part of the 20th century the Show was held at Newton Park – now Brecon Golf Course – and a temporary bridge was built from the Prom across the River Usk for the convenience of local people. It was to Newton Park that Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh came when they visited the Agricultural Show in August 1955.This marked the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Society. Now the annual Show is held in Watton Field on the first Saturday in August. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in August
The Plantain in the picture, however, is a newcomer to Brecknock and was found by the Botany Group last August on a forest track near Tirabad. This Buckshorn Plantain is also fond of paths and tracks but commoner near the sea. It has more interesting leaves than most of its relatives hence the common name. If you would like to join the Brecknock Botany group do contact the trust. Meetings are informal and there is no need to turn up regularly. We all learn as we go along so beginners are welcome. Plantago Coronopus Plantains are everywhere, particularly under our feet on paths and tracks. We tread on them, crush them and they go on regardless. There are two very common species - broad and narrow leaved - which are easily distinguished that have a variety of names including Rat’s Tails and Traveller’s Foot.
August is a busy month with the Trust with a Family Fun Day on the 13th, an evening devoted to Bats in Brecon on the 17th and a Family walk at Craig y Nos on the 26th.There are plenty of work parties in the reserves to go along and assist with. Full details are at bit.ly/bwtevents. John Crellin

REVIEW
“I almost felt I was lying next to the seashore” When Sarah from Healing Energies asked if I would like to carry out a review and explain to our readers how a Sound Bath works, I was delighted as it was therapy I had never heard of before, let alone experienced. But now comes the hard part explaining to you, our readers... Sarah holds monthly Sound Baths in the Subud Hall in Brecon, but unfortunately I could not attend one of these, so I went to Defynong to meet up with her for a 1 to 1 session. A Sound Bath is based on the understanding that we all respond to sound, and in turn vibration and all elements of our bodies vibrate in harmony with each other when we are in tip top shape. But when that harmony is not aligned, our bodies can struggle to work efficiently. The Sound Bath is a way of realigning those vibrations and ‘retuning’ our bodies.
The session lasted just over an hour, but this allowed time for Sarah to take some personal information down. At the end of the session I felt very relaxed and rejuvenated. Sarah is an excellent practitioner. She is very clear in her explanation of the therapy. A monthly Sound Bath Class held in the Subud Hall is £10.00. An individual session is £30.00. Lynda Like
For the treatment Sarah asked me to lie down on her couch, to my delight she then wrapped me up in a blanket so I was warm and cosy. I closed my eyes and Sarah began. Lying down with a warm cosy blanket is relaxing enough, but so often my brain starts to wander and start working through my to-do list, but with Sarah playing the various instruments it was totally absorbing.
“ At the end of the session I felt very relaxed and rejuvenated.” The sounds were so relaxing and I felt myself being almost cocooned in the sound. The change between instruments seemed to be seamless. But for me the best part was the Ocean Drum. I almost felt I was lying next to the seashore. The instruments she uses of varying sizes are singing bowls, a drum and ocean drums as well as chimes and gongs.
Individual treatments available plus Monthly Sound Baths in Subud Hall, Brecon

Get crafting with the kids this summer! Jiggling Jellyfish The perfect summer decor? Homemade sea creatures that flutter in the breeze... Collect materials for the tentacles: curling ribbon, a few strips of bubble wrap, a bath pouf (cut open and unwound), and heavy-duty paper towels cut into spirals. The tentacles can be 12 to 18 inches long. Gather the tentacles at one end and thread them up through the hole of a plastic dome drink lid (from a coffee shop, for example). You could also use an upside-down paper party bowl. Tape the ends around the outside of the lid/bowl with clear tape. Tape a colorful paper cupcake liner over the top of the dome., or use cut-out pages of magazines to découpage the top of the paper bowl. Cover the lid/bowl with three layers of cling-film,
one sheet at a time, tucking the excess film under the bottom edge of the lid. Add sticky-backed pearls or jewels to the outer edge of the lid/bowl. Knot the end of a length of elastic cord and tape it to the top of the lid/bowl. Hang the jellyfish on a porch or by a breezy window.
