Get to really know... Martin Smith
Where were you brought up? In Cardiff. I was educated at Stacey Road Infants and Junior School, then Howardian High School. Did you have a Nick Name? In Form One at High School I wrote a story about a burglar called Slippery Five which I had to read out to the class. From then on everyone called me Slip.
old man. The novels commence with his life as a young business man and will finish at the description in the preface with one final novel.
Any regrets from school days? I left school in my first year in the sixth form at Howardian. My English master Mr. Brinn expressed disappointment. Perhaps I should have stayed on and tried for University to study English.
Favourite writers? Shakespeare for his understanding of people. John Grisham for superb plotting. John Le Carre for subtle complications and well- drawn characters Ian Fleming for fun and joie de vivre.
What did you do after school? I signed up for five year articles of clerkship with a local firm of Chartered Accountants. I was paid £2 per week and nearly 10shillings (50 pence today) was taken in national insurance. I qualified in 1967 and received a certificate of congratulations from the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales for being a member for fifty years in October.
Near death experiences? Having to ice axe arrest whilst sliding towards an abyss after summiting Mont Blanc. And being rescued with my terrier dog Bonnie fighting the tide in the Gwaudraeth Estuary.
Children? Three grown up daughters. Significant Other? Hester, my partner. We’ve been together for seventeen years. Pets? Two Jack Russell dogs. Charlie and Suki, who love our regular walks in the National Park. Where do you live now? Libanus, with a glorious view of Pen Y Fan. Favourite Saying? “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” - Bernard M. Baruch
Any other interests? Mountain walking. I am an ambassador for the Brecon Beacons National Park. Most week- ends we find somewhere new to explore in the Park. It has been a privilege to guide visitors in the Park for many years. Favourite walk? There are many. One outstanding walk is to climb Cribarth from Craig yr Nos and explore the wild area surrounding Carreg Goch and Sinc Giedd. We enjoyed Christmas lunch in the snow there one year. Wish? To maintain enough energy to complete my marathon undertaking of writing all the Minion or Master novels. Now writing the fourth set in Vietnam, but have at least another eight to do!
Most exciting activity? Ice climbing. Spent a week in Colorado abseiling down ice cliffs then climbing back up using crampons and small ice axes. Brilliant! Favourite singer? Whitney Houston. Had to write a poem about her when she died far too young. When did you start writing? I attended a creative writing class six years ago. One exercise was to create a character. My exercise forms the preface to the first novel in the series Minion or Master. I described my protagonist George Howden as an

Trallong Eisteddfod 2017 The Best For Many Years Trallong Eisteddfod was held on 4th November in Sennybridge Primary School. The day commenced with classes for local children at 1.30pm on Saturday and the last competitor in the Cenwch i’m yr hen ganiadur competition left the stage just before midnight. The committee believe this year’s eisteddfod to be one of the best for several years, particularly the afternoon session when there were two cydadrodd parties on stage. These had been trained by Mrs. Gwyneth Williams, who had also helped the children with their individual solos and recitations. There were good numbers of excellent competitors in almost all of the competitions. The highlight of the evening was the Champion Solo competition which attracted five excellent soloists - any one of whom was good enough to win the competition. We were very pleased to welcome both the Aberhonddu Male Voice Choir and Sennybridge YFC Hymn Tune party - thanks must go to the musical directors, accompanist and members of both.
Thanks are also due to Eirlys and Adele for preparing and serving refreshments throughout the day. We are also indebted to Gethin and Julie who acted as door stewards throughout the day. Thanks also go to our loyal competitors, trainers and patrons who support us each year. We also wish to extend our thanks to our wonderful band of helpers who cook Welsh cakes at a number of Food Festivals and the Brecon Jazz weekend. These events allow us to raise the bulk of the money needed to run the eisteddfod. Without the money raised in this way we would be unable to continue to stage this eisteddfod - so important in maintaining our local culture in this part of Powys. Article written by Mary Robinson
The adjudicators, who gave helpful advice and constructive criticism to every competitor were Mr. D. Huw Rees of Pontardawe who adjudicated the musical items; Mrs. Elen Williams of Cwmann who adjudicated the recitation and senior literary items, and Mrs Bethan Price of Defynnog for the junior art and literature. The talented accompanists for the day were Miss Bethan Rees of Llandrindod Wells for the children’s competitions, and Miss Sian Davies of North Cornelly who accompanied the adult competitors in the evening. Conductors Mrs. Mary Hodges of Cardiff, Mrs Annette Thomas of Brecon, Mrs. Bethan Price of Defynnog and Mr. Hywel Phillips of Sennybridge ensured the smooth running of the event. The President for the afternoon session was Mrs. Ydwena Jones of Llanhamlach and the evening President was Mr. David Evans of Lower Chapel. Both gave thought provoking addresses and generous donations.

A perfect Christmas Present Jess Hinsley was introduced to the wonderful world of knitting five years ago, when a lovely wool shop opened in her home town. Her mum went along to some workshops there, and Jess was inspired by the beautiful things she made. She asked her to teach her the basics, and she’s been an avid knitter ever since. Jess’s knitting projects have become more and more elaborate over the years, and once she discovered colour-work knitting she hasn’t looked back! (She simply cannot knit in a single colour anymore!). Knitting has many health benefits, it’s very like meditation. As well as alleviating symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, knitting helps improve motor functions, helps prevent arthritis, and slows cognitive decline. To top it off, you have a garment to use and be proud of at the end! Learn how to make these beautiful Latvian style mittens with Jess over the course of 3 sessions. She will take you through step by step, including how to knit a Latvian braid, and you will receive written instructions so that you can complete the second mitten at home. A perfect Christmas present! With Jess Hinsley at Caffi Ama, 37 Watton, Brecon, Powys LD3 7EG. Contact Jess via email: hello@jesshinsley.com or mobile: 07747426455 to book. Llyswen Cheeky Monkeys, a well established out of school club based in Llyswen Primary school, has been providing outstanding childcare for children aged 3-12 years since 2003; before, after school, and during all school holidays. In August 2016, the club’s application to vary the maximum number of children they were registered to care for, in order to meet the demands of current service users was successfully approved by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales therefore they are currently providing care for 42 children, 32 previously. Now, the club announces further expansion plans, with the aim to launch a nursery on January 15th 2018 with the new school opening, which will offer a fantastic setting for up to 16 children from two years until the term following their third birthday within a caring, professional and above all safe environment. Once eligible to start claiming their free early education funded hours children will be able to access the school’s preschool setting ‘Ladybirds’ where they’ll help them grow and prepare for the transition into school. The nursery will share the ethos of the club’s other services of providing a stimulating recreational and educational programme of quality play activities to keep children busy and entertained. They’ll be offering care 51 weeks of the year open from 8am-5.45pm. Full days as well as half days to support parent’s care needs whether they be at work, those who need a child free time as part of their day or those parents who simply wish for their child to build continuity with care by others and develop key skills such as socialising, building confidence and group activities. Brecon’s Three Railway Stations Four Railway Companies served Brecon in the mid nineteen century. First to arrive was the Brecon & Merthyr Railway which built a station at the Watton, where the Police Station is today. It was joined there by the Hereford, Hay & Brecon Railway and the Mid Wales Railway. A few years later, the Neath & Brecon Railway arrived from the West, built a viaduct across the Honddu and blocked off what was Mount Street. The name of the remaining cul de sac became George Street and Mount Street realigned to where it is today. A station was established at what is now Mount Street House, the only station building which still survives. In 1871 it was decided to build a joint station on land owned by the Marquess Camden at the end of a lane leading from Free Street to a farm called Cae Prior. Camden Road did not exist at this time and the joint station was known as Brecon Free Street Station. A fire occurred at Brecon Free Street Station in 1877 and the companies reverted to their old stations whilst the extensive damage was repaired. The Brecon Free Street Station closed to passengers in 1962 but freight continued by rail to and from Brecon until 1964. www.blfhs.co.uk Š Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Wild in December
Asplenium Trichomanes Maidenhair Spleenwort Several of the Spleeenwort family of ferns adorn our walls all year round. There are more than one of these in this picture, but the dominant fronds are those of Maidenhair Spleenwort. These ferns grow on natural rocks in Brecknock where they are truly native but are, even here, found most on manmade walls and buildings as in this picture from an

abandoned building on the Epynt in mid-December. The name derives from the old belief, based on the doctrine of signatures, that the fern was useful for disorders of the spleen. Most plants with “wort” in their name were believed to have curative properties at one time. The Brecknock Wildlife Trust Christmas Meal will be held at the Castle Hotel on Friday 8th at 7pm. Then a Winter Walk on Monday 11th at Banwen Ponds will include making natural Christmas wreaths including free lunch, hot drinks and mince pies. Volunteer Work Parties continue through the month: Friday 1st: Scrub clearance at Wern Plemys Nature Reserve. Tuesday 5th: Woodland coppicing at BWT Pwll-yWrach Nature Reserve. Friday 15th: More scrub clearance at Wern Plemys. Tuesday 19th: Hedge laying at BWT Cae Pwll y Bo Nature Reserve. Check full details at: bit.ly/BWTdiary

Should you join the rush to invest in VCTs? Anyone investing in a new venture capital trust gets a big tax incentive to do so. They receive 30 per cent tax relief on their contribution. So a £10,000 investment will cost them only £7,000. In the current year, the maximum that can be invested is £200,000. The tax relief does not come without conditions. It has to be paid back if an investor sells their holding within five years. On the surface, the 30 per cent relief on offer does not compare favourably with the 40 or 45 per cent relief available on investments into a pension fund for higher and additional-rate taxpayers. But recent clampdowns on the amount high earners can put into a pension have pushed some towards venture capital trusts. There are also other tax attractions associated with venture capital trusts. Dividends are tax-free, as are any capital gains made from investing in a trust. Indeed, the dividend payments can look favourable against those available from other investments. This is because the trusts are able to distribute part of any profit from holdings they sell to shareholders as income. It leads to a high but lumpy dividend.

Investing in venture capital trusts is not without its risks or drawbacks. The underlying investments are unproven businesses that are prone to failure, sometimes resulting in disappointing returns for trust investors. But a number of venture capital trust managers have built proven track records of picking more winners than losers.

Making a Will I am often told by clients that they have been putting off making their Wills for some time; it is only natural to approach the task with some trepidation and some acceptance that, at some time in the future, we will need it! But making a Will should not be seen as a sign of your impending doom but rather as a sensible step to give yourself some assurance that your worldly goods will find themselves in the hands of the people you would like to have them and that your family, if you have one, will be properly provided for after your days. Making a Will is not usually a complex process and there will be very few circumstances a local solicitor will not have seen before, from second and third marriages to family divisions and reconciliations and so on. As with any task, you will need to make some decisions, such as who you would like to appoint as your executors or guardians for your children while they are young, whether you would like to make specific gifts of items or money and, ultimately, who you would like to be the beneficiaries of your Estate but a local solicitor will guide you through that process. If you already have a Will you should review it every three to five years to ensure that it accurately reflects your circumstances. So I encourage you make a New Year’s Resolution to put your affairs in order... then forget about it for a while and concentrate on living! Christmas at Brecon Indoor Market Deck the hall with lots of bargains - Brecon Indoor Market stages a special Christmas Market on Thursday 14 December. It’s extended until 8pm to allow late night buying for working shoppers.
As well as around forty stalls selling gifts, crafts, jewellery, children’s books, toys and wonderful food, there will be live music and performances, including Brecon High School showcasing excerpts from the upcoming musical Sweeney Todd and Brecon Little Theatre with a festive repertoire. The Indoor Market is open for business 9.30am 5pm on Tuesdays and Fridays every week, so this might be the time to get a Christmas jumper. ‘Tis the season of the office Christmas jumper and Mike’s Fashions has the best. The market is also open from Tuesday 19th December through to Friday 22nd December to offer extra Christmas shopping Vinyl record collecting is the new black (literally) and Jay’s Records and Entertainment might have that elusive record or CD. Brecon Indoor Market
is renowned for bargains in homeware - check out Martin’s Bargains and Brecon Discount Carpets (in the Market Arcade and also in the Market Hall with a vast selection of rugs) and D&P Homewares (in the Arcade).
In the run-up to Christmas, the emphasis is often on culinary delights. This year, go for family-run, locally produced fare with poultry from Albert Rees and Welsh cakes, bread and pizza from Jan’s Tarts cooked in the hall by Janet Williams. For the more difficult to buy for, the answer may lie with Chris Gerrans ‘World Famous’ Antiques Stall, Patchwork Rose’s Handmade Gifts and Haberdashery, or S&P Trading’s jewellery and gifts. Always a surefire hit at this time of year, for books as Christmas presents check out ScrappyPatch Book Club and Independent Usborne Book Organiser Marie Pope who can offer advise on choosing books for children.

REVIEW
“Something to suit everyone”
I hadn’t had a chance to pop into Casa since it changed hands a few months ago. New owner, Clare, has kept a lot of the much-loved menu unchanged, but has introduced new evening opening which consists of very relaxed dining and a yummy sounding wine list. My husband, Owen, and I arrived for a late lunch on a Saturday. The main lunchtime rush was over, but Casa was still pleasantly busy, with great music playing and plenty of happy chatter. The drinks fridge contained lots of tempting cold drinks, but we were chilly so both opted for Americanos, though it was a hard choice between that and the great selection of Teapigs teas. The coffees were lovely, and warmed us up nicely! Casa specialises in local, fresh, healthy food. There really seemed to be something to suit everyone on the menu, with loads of vegan and gluten free options. I chose a toasted sandwich made with St Mary’s Bakery bread and filled with roasted
vegetables, hummus and feta cheese. It was served with home-made coleslaw and crisps. The whole meal with absolutely delicious and full of flavour. The portions were so generous, I had to call upon my husband for help! Owen took advantage of the fact that it was a Saturday as Casa has a pancake and waffle menu available only on Saturdays. He devoured his pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup and declared them ‘Fantastic!’ The home-made cake and brownies available looked wonderfully decadent, but I couldn’t manage another bite, not even for you dear readers! With a Christmas menu available throughout December, Casa would be a great option for a work’s Christmas lunch, or for a stop off to refuel during a shopping trip! Review written by Laura Williams

POINSETTIA The Poinsettia could have been specifically designed for Christmas with its bright red halo and festive green foliage. However that red halo is not just a pretty face: It’s the secret of the Poinsettia’s popularity. It can last for months because the red halo consists of long-lasting leafy bracts rather than soft petals that shrivel up quickly. This allows the Poinsettia to look its best for up to 12 weeks or more.
Christmas meals are available
Poinsettias come from Mexico and they were discovered by Joel Poinsett in 1825 and were associated with Christmas even then. Poinsettias need bright but not strong light away from strong sun and draughts. They need a minimum temperature of 13 to 15 Celsius (55 – 59 Fahrenheit). It’s also a good idea to be careful when transporting Poinsettias from the garden centre to your home in the winter, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage the foliage. Once home water Poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out. With care Poinsettias can be kept for a second year but they tend to develop into woody, leggy shrubs. It’s much better to save up the pennies and buy another that has been cosseted and encouraged into growth by a regime of good food, greenhouse lights and heat!
01874 690282
Finally if you would like a change from the traditional red bracts, there are now new varieties with dusky pink, pale yellow, deep plum or cream bracts and some even have variegated leaves. Every home should have one this Christmas.

News from Chris Davies
Microtopping UK
-Your local MP
Firstly, I would like to take the opportunity to pay my respects to those who lost their lives in the dreadful fire in Llangammarch Wells. This is an appalling tragedy that has come as a shock to us all in Brecon and Radnorshire. My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who lost their lives in this heart breaking fire. Not a week goes by where I am not invited to attend an event somewhere in Brecon and Radnorshire. Our constituency is the second largest in England and Wales, and this fact encourages me to ensure that I travel to even the remotest patches, attending events in all corners of our superb constituency. In just one weekend I went from attending an event with Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, to holding seven surgery meetings in Brecon and Talgarth, to flipping burgers and filling hot dogs at the Black Mountain Lions Club at the Annual Fireworks Display in Clyro. In addition, I attended the Welsh Agriculture: Embracing Change for Success Conference in Llandrindod Wells and visited the annual Caladonian Market in Brecon Market on Saturday afternoon. Throughout October, I attended dozens of events and held four surgery days across Brecon and Radnorshire in Builth, Brecon,Talgarth andYstradgynlais. Surgeries provide me with the opportunity to listen to my constituents and to help them resolve any issues that they may have. This is the backbone of a MPs work and most people don’t always get to see this element of my job. Around my voting and committee duties in Westminster, I also regularly send out invitations to organisations across Brecon and Radnorshire offering them a tour of Parliament. Since Parliament re-opened in September, I have given private tours to many constituents, as well as large groups from Knighton Town Council and Edw Valley Young Farmers Club with many more Community Councils and Young Farmer’s Clubs booked in over the upcoming months. Many don’t initially recognise attending events and holding surgeries as an important role in the life of an MP. However for me, these are two of the most integral elements for being a truly representative Member of Parliament for the people of this great constituency.
Microtopping creates a continuous surface with no joints unless required. Applied in no more than four coats, the final thickness can be as little as 4mm thick, making it a very versatile alternative to tile and wood flooring. Microtopping can be used on both internal and external surfaces and can be applied to almost any substrate with the correct primer. We apply the product to floors, staircases and feature walls, wetrooms and worktops and even furniture. The finished product is very strong and durable, eco friendly and resistant to high uv levels. So if your looking for a seamless, contemporary finish in a large range of colours and effects, then please get in touch for more information. Newss from
Kirsty Williams Carl Sargeant The National Assembly was rocked in November with the news of the tragic death of Carl Sargeant. Not only was Carl a dedicated local Assembly Member, but he was an effective government minister who had a significant impact across political life at a national and community level. Carl was a good friend of mine for many years and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this incredibly difficult time. Suicide is a topic, as a society, we talk about far too infrequently. It is the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. The Samaritans are a fantastic organisation with dedicated and well trained volunteers who are there to help people at a time of crisis.

If you - or someone you know - needs help, don’t hesitate to call them for free on 116 123. Tourism I fully recognise the importance of tourism to Brecon and Radnorshire and to Wales as a whole and I am always looking for opportunities to support the industry. I continue to lobby the UK government to reduce VAT for tourism businesses and have written to the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, to ask him to introduce this in his upcoming budget. Research has shown that a reduction of VAT for tourism to 5% would contribute an extra £4.6 billion to the treasury over ten years and create 121,000 extra jobs across the UK. The UK is currently one of only 4 EU countries which does not take advantage of variable VAT rates for tourism. This needs to change. If you would like to discuss these or any other issues with me, please email me at Kirsty.Williams@ assembly.wales or call my office on 01874 625 739.

News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth One event that signposts the run up to Christmas each year in my own community is the Talgarth Luncheon Club Christmas lunch, which falls this time on Tuesday 5th December. It will be a special, but also a poignant occasion for us this year. The volunteers arrive at the Town Hall from early morning to ensure that all the preparations are in place. And this celebration comes only a few weeks after the very same team was out in force to host the sixth annual afternoon tea, in memory of the late Brian Kite, which raised £1,860 towards Macmillan Cancer Support, and an impressive total of well over £10,000 since its inception. This is thanks to the efforts of all the helpers, who contribute in so many ways to our community. Alan Tandy, McMillan’s Development Manager for Mid and North Wales, was in attendance again to express his appreciation to the volunteers for their sterling efforts. It is the very same spirit of volunteering that is demonstrated by Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks will be lighting up the town until Twelfth Night. In another field of volunteering, the recent Gwernyfed Ladies Rugby match against Whitland Ladies was a very special fixture, marking Rosie Snape’s 100th cap for Gwernyfed. It was a proud occasion for Rosie, Gordon her husband and coach, and their daughters Lily and Megan. A whole family dedicated to their sport, their club and their community. A Scrum 5 film crew was also in attendance to catch some of the highlights and to interview Rosie. I hope that you agree with me that volunteering, in all its forms, is the very glue that holds our communities together, at this time of year most of all. If you wish to get in touch, please don’t hesitate to do so at: president@welshlibdems.org.uk Happy Christmas

A list of 10... Books After 37 years in the Royal Navy I thought I’d find somewhere to live where no-one knew what an oar was. Llangorse looked good, if I stayed away from the Lake. So I got a job in local government nearby and did nearly 5 years of that. Now I take photos of the environment - farmers, shows, local people, even the Valleys. There’s always something or someone worth recording that won’t be there for ever.
Open Monday to Saturday
Mark Kerr’s Top Ten Books: Opposing the Slavers : Peter Grindal - A brilliant and detailed account of how the Royal Navy suppressed the Atlantic slave trade in the early 19th century. Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts : Christopher de Hamel - A look into an unfamiliar world, well worth the excursion. Went the Day Well? : David Crane - An account of what was happening in Britain on the day of Waterloo. Not what you’d think! Sapiens : Yuval Noah Harari - Astonishing insights into our origins as a race. Gripping. From the Holy Mountain : William Dalrymple Travel with a difference, in the footsteps of John Moscos as he journeyed around the decaying Byzantine Empire in late antiquity. Short Stories : Guy de Maupassant - Humour and pathos by the pen of a master. The Far Side of the World : Patrick O’Brian Actually, anything in the 18 volume saga of Jack Aubrey and his sidekick Stephen Maturin. As near to frigate-life as you’ll get without going to sea, but so much more than that. The Leopard : Giuseppe de Lampedusa - How to deal with change, or not; family life in Sicily in the 1860s during and after the Risorgimento. The Affairs of Flavie : Gabriel Chevallier Unputdownable, but I’m not sure why. Chatty, apparently slight, but adds up to a very good description of the (French) human condition. The Kindly Ones : Jonathan Littell - A brilliant and serious attempt to get into the mind of a Nazi mass murderer. Not for the fainthearted, but if you’ve ever wondered how it could happen, here’s the answer.
