Local Talent: Ola Moran-Ziętek

Type of artist: I upcycle paper. I twist and weave magazines and newspapers into functional items; baskets, bottle holders, mats and also jewellery. I don’t like to constantly make the same items, I like to create something new, therefore lots of my products are unique. Additionally my skills develop, and with that my ideas for projects are getting more challenging and more interesting.

as craft maker, not an artist. All my life I was making things using different crafts methods. I knit, crochet, I also do tatting, quilling, quilting and more, but a few years ago when I made my first basket I completely fell in love with weaving, and since then I strongly advocate for recycling and against consumerism. Weaving paper combined all of my passions.

Range of products: I make earrings, coasters, baskets, laundry baskets, one day I want to make a cupboard, or a wardrobe, maybe a shed.

Where did you train or gain experience: Craft was always only a hobby and I never formally trained in it. Besides I don’t think you can be trained in craft. Someone shows you the technique and then you build on it your own ideas, your style, the better you get the more complicated projects come to your head.

Price range: My jewellery starts from £7, baskets from £8, however I made some Christmas decorations that sold for £3, it all depends on how big a product, how much paper I will need to twist, the type of paper and a technique. How long have you been an artist: I see myself rather

Artist statement: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present. From Kung Fu Panda.

On Saturday 6th January the Friends of Brecon and District Mind are organising a twelfth-night celebration at the Muse, Glamorgan Street, Brecon, from 7.30pm. A warm welcome is extended to everyone. They are fortunate that the Tea-on-Top Group, comprising well-known local musicians Laurie Pyle, Ade Williams, Jan Hurst and Jamie Huish, will be playing for them. They are also regular members of bands the Dolphins and Hershel’s Barn. The group performs at the Friends’ annual Tea-on-Top walk at the end of July to the top of Pen-y-Crug, Brecon, against the dramatic backdrop of the Brecon Beacons. On Twelfth Night the group will play lively sets of bluegrass and other musical styles including Irish folk music to which you may like to dance.

The festivites may involve a few games and, if anyone feels sufficiently moved, some open-mic winter poetry. There will also be a finger buffet to which participants are encouraged to bring along a contribution although this is not essential as some food will be provided. There will be a bar and soft drinks. The Friends support the work of Brecon and District Mind and raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. POWYS FACTORS Ltd BRECON

PARTS FOR CARS The Golden Lion Inn, Lion Street (Now Bethal Square) Brecon’s premier inn during the 18th century, it gave its name to Lion Street. The Inn occupied a wide frontage with stabling for 60 horses at the rear. In 1755, it was the venue for the first meeting of the Brecknock Agricultural Society, the oldest Agricultural Society in Britain. The inn yard was the show area and auction mart, and the Society gave awards for stock improvement, particularly of stallions. In 1756 Thomas Longfellow, the owner, was principal agent in launching the first commercial coach service from London, via Gloucester, into Mid-Wales. The inaugural meeting of the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal Company was held here in 1793. An important social venue,The Golden Lion housed civic functions, balls and theatrical performances. Eventually it was eclipsed by the new Castle Hotel, and by 1834 it was serving as a barracks for the 11th Regiment. In 1843 the Golden Lion site was purchased by the Calvinistic Methodists, at first for education, and then building Bethel Chapel in 1852. Later, the Lion Street frontage was rented to the Post Office and various commercial activities. In 1994 the entire property opened as the Bethel Square shopping precinct. www.blfhs.co.uk Š Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in January

“Candelmas Bells”, “Drooping Bells”, “Eve’s Tears” or even “Bulbous Violets” were names used for them in the past. Once again, the Botany group will be participating in the nationwide BSBI New Year Plant Hunts. These are open to all. All you have to do is spot a wild plant in flower and we will name it and record it. Last year 23 species were found at Ystradgynlais and there will be a repeat event at this venue on Tuesday, 2nd. Then we will see what we can find at Crickhowell on Thursday, 4th.

Galanthus Nivalis Snowdrops will be flowering soon on our roadsides and woodland margins. There is a small enclosed area near Llangorse where paths meet just west of the lake with a good display which suggests some habitation there in the past. The species may be native, but it is certain that most of those we see are escapes from or a relic of gardening.

On Saturday 13th the Annual Winter Bird Walk will be held at Llangorse Lake.

“Snowdrop” is a relatively recent name and

Central banks must warn over Bitcoin bubble The price of the Bitcoin has seesawed recently as fears grow that a colossal bubble in the digital online currency is about to burst. Many experts have compared it to the frenzy for tulip bulbs in the 17th century which saw prices climb 2,200 per cent in four months before crashing. By comparison, Bitcoin had risen 1,800 per cent this year at its peak. The mania has prompted Royal Bank of Scotland chairman Sir Howard Davies to call on central banks around the world to protect savers from disaster. He said they are failing to act out of fear they will be labelled technology-hating dinosaurs. Experts are now warning that its rise is completely unsustainable and unprecedented in the modern era. There have been calls for warnings from the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the US Federal Reserve and the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The recent price surge has been driven by Bitcoin’s fast-approaching debut on two Chicago exchanges. CME Group and Cboe Global Markets will allow punters to bet on its future price without buying it, and their involvement is seen as a key step towards Bitcoin entering the mainstream. But although money is pouring in based on the expectation of further growth, it is also possible that the value of Bitcoin will drop sharply if hedge funds are able to start short-selling it – betting the value will fall. As happened at vulnerable banks during the financial crisis, this could become a selffulfilling prophecy and trigger large drops.

Commercial Leases - Part 2 of 2

3. If I find that there are repairs required to the premises, am I right to think the landlord will sort them out? Most commercial landlords not only seek to avoid being responsible for carrying out repairs to the premises, but will actually seek to put the responsibility for putting the property into repair on the tenant’s shoulders. A tenant who agrees to a full repairing obligation can find himself with a repairing bill running into tens of thousands of pounds when the lease ends, despite the fact that the disrepair pre-dated the lease itself. A well advised tenant will try to limit his repairing responsibility to keeping it in no worse state than it was at the date of the lease. For this reason, it is highly recommended that an ingoing tenant obtains correct legal advice about a repairing clause before they enter into a lease. 4. What happens if, after I have taken the lease, I discover there are problems relating to the premises that impact on my business? The principle of “buyer beware” relates to a tenant taking a lease in the same way that it does to a purchaser buying a property, meaning that a tenant takes a property “warts and all” and he must satisfy himself that it is suitable both physically and legally for the use he intends. The research into the property carried out by a good lawyer will reveal many things about the property, including whether the landlord actually has the power to grant the lease, any adverse rights that may affect it as well as any rights that benefit the property such as rights of way. Lawyers can carry out a range of enquiries and searches to discover such things as planning permissions, whether the property is connected to the public highway, whether there is any risk of contaminated land and a host of other information.

JW’S MINI SKIPS & PLANT HIRE

Micro & Mini Diggers Dumpers • Rollers Wacker Plates Generators Repairs Van Hire • Chippers Cherry Pickers • Water Pumps Stump Grinders

It is common for tenants who have not been represented by solicitors to enter a lease without finding out any of this information. If a problem rears its head in such a case, say for instance the property does not have planning permission to use it for the tenant’s business, he will have no comeback against the landlord and the tenant will have to continue paying the rent despite the fact he may have a useless asset.

Variety For Orchestra’s January Concert Brecknock Sinfonia, the resident orchestra of Brecon Cathedral, begins its 2018 concerts with a varied programme of music for strings. Baritone John Rath joins the orchestra for Finzi’s song cycle ‘Let us garlands bring’, five attractive Shakespeare settings. Harpist Katherine Thomas is the soloist in Handel’s lively concerto, and also supports the strings in the serene Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, forever associated with the film of ‘Death in Venice’. The concert opens with Holst’s jaunty ‘St Paul’s Suite’, written for his pupils when he was a teacher at the famous London girls school. The programme includes a new work by Elliot Kempton, aged 17, already known to Brecknock Sinfonia audiences as a solo violinist. Elliot’s ‘Variations on Scarborough Fair’ reveal his talents as composer and arranger. Two sets of dances conclude the concert: Debussy’s ‘Danse sacrée et Danse profane’ contrasts with one of the strings’ most popular pieces, Bartok’s rousing ‘Romanian Folk Dances’. The concert begins at 7.30pm on Saturday 27th January, and tickets are available at the door, price £13, under 18s free. DOG WALKING - We walk your dog from home when you are unable to.

OUTDOOR AND INDOOR CYCLAMEN Cyclamen, which grow from flattened bulbs known as corms, are extremely versatile plants as our title suggests.

Outdoors in January the autumn cyclamen for pots, troughs and baskets, will have finished their flowering but should still be displaying their attractive, marbledpatterned leaves. They can be planted out into shady parts of the garden in spring and have every chance of flowering again next autumn. In the garden itself the much smaller flowered Cyclamen hederifolium, the ivy-leaved cyclamen, produce their pink or white flowers in August to November and by January they will also be showing off their patterned leaves, every plant have a different pattern. However, it is after Christmas that Cyclamen coum with their heart- shaped leaves start to burst into flower. Both of these species prefer a shady position beneath trees and shrubs and if left undisturbed will seed around and eventually produce large areas of attractive flowers and leaf where other plants struggle to grow well.

A unique experience

If you love animals, then 2018 is the year to have a unique experience with local company Good Day Out, who have created a series of adventures in the Brecon Beacons that interact with animals, wildlife, conservation and rural skills. With Sheep Trekking, Piggy Walking and Dinky Donkey Walks, all three offer engaging encounters within very small groups and you are walking within the beautiful scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Each of these experiences is completely different from each other but all concentrate on being hands on and up close to these lovely animals, with a friendly walk leader who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing information about their lives and welfare. Curiously both hilarious and mindful, these animal adventures are suitable for all ages. Good Day Out also offers other great things to do including a Hedgehog Helper Morning where you are

a volunteer for a few hours caring for rescue hogs and hoglets, and you can hone your rural skills with Shearing, Lambing and a Sheepdog morning, so you can experience part of what it is to be a Welsh hill farmer. The added bonus with all Good Day Out experiences is that with every voucher sold, a good cause also benefits in some way, so you can have a great time whilst helping others. Gift vouchers are available so your friend or loved one can choose their own date, or you can call the friendly team for advice and to book specific dates. Llangoed Hall welcomes you Llangoed Hall is a beautiful 23-bedroom country house hotel, nestled into the Wye River Valley, that commands magnificent views of the Black Mountains and beyond. When you arrive there is no reception desk, just friendly and professional staff to look after you. The spacious reception rooms are full of antiques, complimented by a superb collection of original 18th and 19th Century paintings and drawings including works of art by Edwardian artists Walter Sickert, Augustus John and Rex Whistler. The hall was originally a Jacobean Mansion of 1632, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, redesigned Llangoed Hall in 1912. In the 1980s the hall was bought by Sir Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley) who rescued the property with the clear vision of

creating the ambiance of the Edwardian country house party. Largely as a result of Sir Bernard Ashley’s foresight, much of the house and gardens remain as they were then but complimented, today, with modern conveniences to provide an idyllic location for holidays, weddings, conferences, lunches, afternoon teas, special occasions and any other celebrations. Llangoed Hall’s head Chef Nick Brodie’s awardwinning cuisine has flair and imagination and only the finest local produce is used to create outstanding gourmet dishes. Nick has also recently appeared on BBC2’s the Great British Menu, so pop in to sample our outstanding lunch, dinner and afternoon tea menu, making it the perfect setting to relax, unwind and enjoy mouth-watering food. News from Chris Davies

Microtopping UK

-Your local MP

We in Brecon and Radnorshire have had lots of good news to celebrate in recent months. I recently visited Franksbridge Primary School to congratulate them on their outstanding Estyn report. Brecon High School has been given the go ahead for a ÂŁ22 million pound state of the art new school. We have celebrated the renovation of the Strand Hall in Builth, 120 years of the same family running the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod and the new Archbishop of Wales being enthroned at Brecon Cathedral. Brecon and Radnorshire is on the move, and I want this success and investment to continue. Since 2015, I and Conservative colleagues in both Westminster and Cardiff Bay have worked relentlessly to push for a Mid Wales Growth Deal. In the Chancellors budget a few weeks ago he confirmed that this deal is being discussed and put together. As soon as this announcement was made public I organised a meeting between UK Government Minister for Wales Guto Bebb and leading figures at Powys County Council, to discuss the next steps in putting together a comprehensive plan for an effective and radical Mid Wales Growth Deal. Thus far, most Growth Deals have been based in metropolitan cities and large towns, not rural areas like Mid Wales. They have far different issues to address than places such as Powys. For example, unlike many cities, Powys has extremely low unemployment levels, due to our passionate workforce and brilliant local employers. But we struggle when it comes to productivity and many are battling with low pay. Some of the aims of this Growth Deal should be to tackle low pay and up skill our local workforce, thus increasing wages and living standards in the process. The team behind the deal should push for increases in investment to areas such as our industrial and business parks, which lie on the outskirts of our market towns across Mid Wales. These parks employ vast numbers of people and attracting new businesses to these areas must be at the heart of the Growth Deal. Building a more sustainable and self-reliable region is something this Growth Deal must aim for. Along with improving our growing tourism industry and tackling the issue of our ageing population by attracting young professionals to move to our beautiful constituency. Mid Wales is moving forward and I will continue to do my upmost to make the Growth Deal a major success.

Microtopping creates a continuous surface with no joints unless required. Applied in no more than four coats, the final thickness can be as little as 4mm thick, making it a very versatile alternative to tile and wood flooring. Microtopping can be used on both internal and external surfaces and can be applied to almost any substrate with the correct primer. We apply the product to floors, staircases and feature walls, wetrooms and worktops and even furniture. The finished product is very strong and durable, eco friendly and resistant to high uv levels. So if your looking for a seamless, contemporary finish in a large range of colours and effects, then please get in touch for more information. Newss from

Kirsty Williams

There is a saying, “may you live in interesting times”. Welsh, British and international politics is certainly interesting at the moment. With issues like Brexit, Donald Trump, and North Korea; 2018 is looking very uncertain. What is certain is that nothing can be taken for granted and we must all stand up and fight for what we believe in. Representing Brecon and Radnorshire in the National Assembly is an enormous privilege and one I have certainly never taken for granted. I love this constituency dearly and will continue to do all I can to protect and improve its schools, economy, and vital public services. Brexit has dominated the news and political agenda for the past 18 months. That looks set to continue into 2018 and beyond, with big question marks still remaining over our future relationship with the world’s largest trading block. I hope we will get some certainty in the New Year. The Welsh Liberal Democrat group on Powys County Council are doing a good job, holding Powys’ feet to the fire over the decisions they are making. For example, the Conservative/Independent council are currently facing tough questions over their delivery of adult and children’s social services and it is vital there is improvement in this next year. I hope you and your families have a very merry Christmas and I would like to wish you all the very best for 2018. As ever, if there is anything I can do to help you, please call my office on 01874 625 739 or email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

As I write, we are well into the season of Advent and many community gatherings for people of all ages have already taken place. The heavy snowfall of this past weekend has put paid to others with the treacherous conditions making it necessary to cancel or postpone events. When this edition of Local Beacon hits the door mat, it will be time to reflect upon the old year and look ahead to the new, with everyone wondering what 2018 will mean for us, our families and community and those we hold dear. It is inevitably also a time when we think of those who are no longer with us - and recall their part in our lives. 2017 has certainly brought its share of difficulties, challenges and unpredictable events. Our world feels like a more unstable place due to terror attacks at home and abroad, with the occupants of both the White House and the Kremlin pursuing nationalist agendas, and showing scant regard for wider world opinion. In this context, the greater stability we can retain in our relations with European friends and neighbours and the lower the hurdles erected in trade and labour flows will surely be in our shared interest, as our governments strive to navigate the choppy waters of Brexit. So much in the cultural, social and sporting life of our communities depends upon selfless volunteering and acts of kindness. It would be a really positive New Year’s resolution, if we were to commit ourselves afresh to recognising this and to saying thank you to those who do so much to enrich our common life. Maybe some of us could also lend a hand, if we have the capacity to do so. There IS such a thing as society. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by email: president@welshlibdems.org.uk, on facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. Happy New Year William

BRECON Poets: JOHN HARRIES Kingfisher Poetry Society, Llanfaes

TIME Try to remember the good times you had Also with sadness the times that were bad

• Extensions

• Renovations

Your alma mater days prepared you for life Mixed with emotions of triumph and strife

• Kitchens

• Bathrooms

• General Building

It is easy to recall those moments of joy When you caught the eye of a girl or a boy

• Property Maintenance • Damp Proofing

A fashionista when young, a reveller by night Ready for challenges whatever the plight

• Timber Treatment

Time to reflect on those memorable occasions Not forgetting those fleeting liaisons The music that made you leap with delight Horror films that made you shudder with fright
