At the end of January, the superb Brecon Tourist Information Centre closed their doors. This leaves Brecon, the hub of the Brecon Beacons without a faceto-face tourist information service. Read more on page 9, please get involved. This will have a huge negative effect on the businesses within the Brecon Beacons. On the centre spread you will find some suggestions to celebrate with loved ones valentine’s, mother’s Day and the Easter weekend. Brecon Library are running ‘Blind Date With a Book’ during the month of February. I must say, I think it looks fab. Read more on page 29. Our Companionship for the 50+ is back. We’ll now run this bimonthly. So if you feel the time is right to find that special someone, either reply to one of the adverts on page 32, or fill and send in the slip for yourself. What have you got to lose? Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: Cariads Local Ltd Team)

Local Talent: Matthew Smith

Type of artist: Furniture designer and maker. Carpenter/joiner. Range of products: I design and make a whole range of indoor and outdoor furniture, as well as carpentry/joinery pieces. Price range: I make furniture and joinery pieces mainly by commission, where I work with the customer on what they can afford using the materials and time frame to fit their budget. Hence the price range can vary a lot. How long have you been an artist? At 10 years old I made a picket fence for my grandparents’ garden, which led me on to making go carts and then an eccentric bird house. I think the desire and ability to create has always been with me. Its a great pleasure for me now to be able to do it for my living. Where did you train or gain experience? I trained in traditional carpentry and joinery in Tredegar with a firm, where I completed a five year apprenticeship. From there I carried on developing my skills with a company in Jersey, which then led to me having my own company. Every piece I work on, develops further my understanding and ability to make high end quality pieces. Artist statement: Everything I do, whether it be making a basic shelf or table for Bang and Olufsen, I give 100% to the job. I spend time to make sure every piece is made with integrity so it will be enjoyed for generations. Where can your products be purchased? My products can be bought straight from me. You can have a look at my website dragonflywoodwork.uk for ideas and talk to me direct about making something unique or doing general carpentry joinery for you. What has been your proudest moment? After many years of using so called ‘perfect’ timbers for carpentry/joinery and seeing all the waste that came with that (from throwing out the timbers with no knots or waney edges). I started to question what was aesthetic or useful and could see quite quickly

that every part of a tree can be used for making good quality and beautiful furniture. Which, when I responded to that, started to make my work look more like art than just furniture. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Whatever I am working on is my current masterpiece, as I give everything to mastering its perfection. Have you any future plans for your work? I am currently working on a handmade cot out of oak and spalted alder for our new baby boy. What advice would you give a local artist? I would advise any local artist to follow the delight in what they do, find the enjoyment and let that guide the creating process. What other local artists do you admire? I admire any and every artist, for it takes courage to go out and show one’s expression in the work they do.

HELLEBORES Hellebores are greatly underrated perennial plants, some of which are evergreen, with showy flowers in the winter and early spring before most of the other perennials have even come into growth. Perhaps the best known of the hellebores is Helleborus niger, better known as the ‘Christmas Rose’. These are evergreen with divided, deep green leaves and nodding, white flowers with golden stamens. As the name suggest they can be in flower for Christmas, but in most years the flowers last well into the New Year. By March the later flowering Helleborus x hybridus or ‘Lenten Rose’ will be taking centre stage with their cup-shaped, white, pink or purple flowers many of which have attractive, spotted patterns on the inside of the petals. Other Hellebores such as H. corsicus and H. foetidus have divided, spiny, dark green leaves and pale green flowers carried in large clusters in late winter and early spring. Hellebores in general prefer semi-shade and a moisture retentive soil and are therefore ideal for edge of woodland or around the base of shrubs. As flower buds develop in the winter, old, blackened leaves need to be removed to allow the flowers to be seen at their best. Just remember though that all parts of the plant may cause severe discomfort if ingested and that the sap may irritate skin. However don’t let this put you off as every garden should have a place for at least one variety of the hardworking Hellebore. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

Brecon Tourist Information Centre Brecon Town Council is committed to maintaining a face-to-face Tourist Information service in Brecon to support local businesses and the community. Confidential negotiations have been underway over the last six months in relation to the closure of the existing Tourist Information Centre in the town’s car park. The Town Council has been very concerned at the plans by Powys County Council to close the existing Tourist Information Centre by the end of January. A Working Group was set up in collaboration with Brecon Chamber of Trade, Brecon Beacons Tourism and Brecknock Society and Museum Friends to look at options to resolve the issue.

quality of the eventual Tourism Service being proposed at Y Gaer by Powys County Council. The Town Council is continuing to look at ways of maintaining a face-toface service rather than the unmanned service which we understand is being proposed by Powys County Council for Y Gaer. We will keep the public informed about the progress of these proposals. It should be noted that due to the confidentiality issues Brecon Town Council has been unable to disclose plans publicly, however thorough research and negotiations have been undertaken behind the scenes over the last six months.

Brecon Town Council welcomes support from individuals, community groups and organisations, community councils and businesses who wish to be involved in the ongoing Tourism Information Service.

Powys County Council refused a request for a Community Asset Transfer for the building for which they are seeking a significant commercial rent. Brecon Town Council has concluded that the financial cost and risk to the taxpayer of continuing the service at the present building would be too great. However further research has established that a tourism service could be affordable at an alternative location. The Council is sourcing alternative premises for the delivery of the service and has budgeted sums in its precept for 2018/19 to allow delivery of such a service. Confidential negotiations are currently underway. The Council’s intention is to maintain a face-to-face Tourism Information Centre for the next year April 2018 - March 2019. It is envisaged that this will be a staffed service with flexible opening hours and supported by volunteers. The Council is very concerned about the level and

CLAY SHOOTING

Woodland Park, Brecon www.wpshoot.co.uk EXPERT TUITION novice to experienced shooters PRACTICE 100-clay automatic layout The Old Museum – An Earlier History The Old Museum was initially built as an English Independent Chapel in 1836. It was built by the Rev David Blow, who was originally from London. Having moved to Brecon, he found that there were no English language services available for English Independents. He therefore established the English Independent cause in the town in 1833. At first the followers of the cause worshiped in a small rented room. He then decided that a purpose built chapel was required. He lived in what is now the Conservative Club in St Mary’s Street. On the rear garden of the house he erected the Chapel building. He made the entrance to the Chapel from Glamorgan Street. The Chapel held 500 persons and cost about £900 to build. When the Rev Blow sold his house in St Mary’s Street in 1839, it became a residential theological college for the Independent Cause [also called Congregationalists]. The College was later moved to new premises on Camden Road and was known as the Brecon Congregational Memorial College. In 1923, the Glamorgan Street Chapel closed and the congregation united with the Welsh Independents at the Plough Chapel in Lion Street. www.blfhs.co.uk

Protecting wildlife for the future

is a parasite on tree roots, often Hazel, and can be seen in shady lanes such as that by the Login Brook up to Hay Common. We saw some emerging shoots in Priory Groves at Brecon during the January tree identification walk. As a parasite it does not manufacture food at all and has no green chlorophyll. The only purpose of the waxy and rather unearthly or ghostly looking flower stems is to reproduce. It is the seed capsules that most resemble teeth, but it seems the plant, although a “wort”, was never much used as a herbal medicine. It can also grow on Poplar, Willow, Alder or Elm roots. Apparently in Yorkshire it was once known as “Corpse-flower”.

The savings deals to turn to now that the 4% NS&I deal has finished

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

Nearly 900,000 savers will be disappointed when their 4 per cent National Savings & Investments deal comes to an end over the next four months. A huge £9 billion has been stashed away in NS&I’s three-year 65+ Guaranteed Growth Bonds, which mature between January 15 and May 15. The bad news is that there’s nothing to match the rate they have earned over the past three years. So, what should you do? We warn against doing nothing, or you will find your money tied up for another three years at a much lower rate. You can expect your letter 30 days before your bond expires. You must then tell NS&I what you want to do with your money at least two working days before your maturity date. This must be done by post or online — even if you bought the bond over the phone. If you don’t, your money will be rolled over into NS&I’s threeyear standard Guaranteed Growth Bond. This pays a much lower 2.2 per cent, cutting your annual interest on £10,000 from £400 to £220. Once in this bond, you have 30 days to remove your cash without a penalty. If you miss this deadline, you pay a charge equal to 90 days’ interest — £54 on £10,000 — to get your money back early. If you are happy to tie up your money for another three years, we think the 2.2 per cent is a competitive deal. The only real risk is if interest rates increase quickly over the next couple of years. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

ROOFING THE ORIGINAL PERRY FAMILY trading as:

In April 2018 Land Transaction Tax will replace Stamp Duty Land Tax in Wales. You may have seen articles in the press about the differing levels of tax that will be payable in Wales and England at the end of this tax year.

The Perry family has been repairing roofs in this area for over 45 years (three generations): • Traditional built up high tensile felting systems, fibre glass, single ply, liquid coatings, slating & tiling with manufacturers’ backed guarantees ranging from 10-25 years;

In addition, Wales now has its own tax collector in the Welsh Revenue Authority. If you are thinking of buying a property or are in the process of buying a property, it is important that you factor in all of the expenses involved including Stamp Duty Land Tax or Land Transaction Tax. 65 Years Experience in the Building Trade

As the saying goes, the best things in life are free – and the Library has free reading material in abundance! This February Brecon Library is once again celebrating a month of romance by running its ‘Blind Date with a Book’ display. Picked by Library Staff, Volunteers & Customers, these mystery books are wrapped up tight and only have a brief description on the front to tempt you – after all, one should never judge a book by its cover! There’s been some great feedback from readers who’ve unexpectedly uncovered hidden gems, and if it turns out it’s more of a miss than a hit, you’re not out of pocket – just return to the Library and re-enter the dating pool (so to speak!). If you’re not looking for such a ‘long term’ commitment, try a bit of speed dating: you can access a whole host of free magazines with your Powys Library card – which, just like the Local Beacon – are totally free. These include everything from Artists & Illustrators to Auto Express, a bundle of BBC magazines, Cosmo & Countryfile right through to Vogue UK. There’s even an offering for those younger readers (Minecraft World Magazine tempting anyone?). Just download the Rbdigital app to get started. All you need is your Library card!

A list of 10... Books Diane Hebb Diane lives in Cathedine and loves walking the Allt whenever she can. She started her professional life as a dancer and choreographer, and now travels to Cardiff each day where she works as Director of Engagement and Participation at the Arts Council of Wales. Diane is currently leading the delivery of a creative learning programme for schools across Wales.

“I am passionate about reading and am never without a book. My reading time is usually at the end of my busy day, and part of my relax and unwind time. I have an eclectic taste in books, from historical novels, to thrillers, to sci fi and fantasy, though not too fond of romance.” “I really enjoyed exploring my top ten, but found it incredibly difficult as I have read so many fantastic books.” In no particular order they are: Black Beauty by Anna Sewell - A firm favourite from my childhood and still on my bookshelf. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolkein - I have read these books time and time again and still enjoy them. My first foray into fantasy and even the subject of my degree dissertation! Vanity Fair by William Thakeray - Another from my school days, but still a firm favourite. I loved the sense of time and place – the regency period and the Napoleonic wars. I have to admit to relating, just a little, to the bohemianism of the anti-heroine Rebecca Sharp. Captain Correllis Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres - A story of love, joy and loss set on a beautiful Greek island during WW2. I spent a summer holiday immersed in this novel. I admit there is an element of romance. The Passage by Justin Cronin (together with the The Twelve and The City of Mirrors) - How to describe The Passage? – an epic “fantasy” post apocalyptic novel about a group of survivors forced to leave the safety of their home to find sanctuary in a past they have no knowledge of, and a future that offers only fear, death or something worse. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (and the sequel Bring up the Bodies) - One of my current favourite writers. The reign of the Tudors has always been one of my favourite periods of history and I’ve

read many books (factual and fictional) on this period. Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall provided a fresh, new insight into the machinations of Henry VIII’s court from the point of view of a key playerThomas Cromwell – usually left lurking in the shadows by most authors. I’m so pleased this book is on the WJEC A level list. Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan - A heart wrenching and profoundly emotional journey, this book follows the story and memories of an Australian Doctor who “survived” the Burma Railway – a prisoner of the Japanese. The narrative pulls no punches but draws you into a lyrical and almost poetic world of deep sorrow, loss and forgiveness. You must read this book. Foucaults Pendulum by Umberto Eco - I struggled with my last three books but I settled on a novel I read many years ago, which I have taken down from the shelf on a number of occasions since but have still not managed to re-read. It is an intriguing and beguiling mystery with plots and intrigues woven around the exploration and exposure of the esoteric. For my last two choices I have taken a slight liberty with the term “book”. Having also studied drama, I love the theatre and I enjoy reading plays, particularly the plays of Anton Chekov and Henrik Ibsen. So my final choices are The Cherry Orchard by the former and Hedda Gabler by the latter - As with all of the novels I have chosen, these plays are characterised by the time and place in which they are set and yet have a timelessness about them in their portrayal of the breadth of human experience – of hope, despair, gain and loss, of joy and tragedy. They are stories as much about our inhumanity as our humanity. Article supplied by Lynn Clausen of Raven Drama

Farming Post Brexit The world’s population is growing at an ever accelerated rate, with migration from rural areas to cities and from climate change affected nations to wealthier less affected nations. The demand for finer, higher quality food is growing across the globe. Farmers and producers across the UK are embracing new technology and artificial intelligence to enhance the way in which production can increase. A role which may have taken dozens of people weeks to do can now be done in a fraction of the time by one individual and a machine. These global changes raise political and moral questions as to how the Government and society embraces or challenges them. The Conservative Government is driving an ever more eco-friendly green agenda, and I welcome that. We are the party that represents rural Britain and protecting our environment should be at the top of our priority, as long as we don’t bend to the green lobby’s left wing social agenda. Of course Brexit will mean change. But, critically, what it means most of all is that we can once more decide how we shape and meet the challenges ahead. Brexit means we don’t need any longer to follow the path dictated by the Common Agricultural Policy. We can have our own - national - food policy, our own agriculture policy, our own environment policies, our own economic policies, shaped by our own collective interests. The CAP was designed, like so many aspects of the EU, for another world, the post-war period when memories of food shortages were hauntingly powerful and the desire to support a particular model of land use was wrapped up with ideas of a stable countryside that seemed reassuringly attractive after the trauma of industrial-scale conflict. Paying land owners for the amount of agricultural land they have is unjust, inefficient and drives perverse outcomes. It gives the most from the public purse to those who have the most private wealth. I will be working closely with people such as Michel Gove MP and other rural organisations to ensure that we create a post Brexit agricultural policy which rewards those who produce and protect our environment. It is vital we manage this change effectively and make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Newss from

The Giddy

Kirsty Williams

As each year passes the odds seem to be more and more stacked against young people. The lack of affordable housing and decently-paid job opportunities for our young people after they leave education is a serious problem, as are the reductions in recreation and youth services in our towns and villages. For too many of our young the world must seem a very hostile place indeed. As Brecon & Radnorshire’s Welsh Assembly Member (AM) I try to promote the interests of the young here as vigorously as I can. There are some very goodnews stories to tell about what is happening in the constituency. In Brecon construction of the long-awaited new High School is about to begin and will provide a fantastic opportunity to improve and develop secondary education there after years of difficulty in buildings that have for far too long been very unsatisfactory. In the Gwernyfed High School catchment area five new stateof-the-art primary schools are nearing completion. They will provide the best possible educational start for their pupils. But giving our youngsters good schooling is only the first step – the task is to ensure that their life chances beyond that, whatever their abilities, are the best we can make them. In that respect, here in Wales and across the UK, there is much to be done to improve matters. At the root of the issue is the need to provide a vibrant local economy with top-class local services, so that the young people who are the future of our communities can live and earn a decent living locally if they want to. Far too many are denied this option. It’s one of the reasons our official unemployment levels locally are so low – young (and not so young) people seeking work and better life opportunities tend to move away to find it. One of my goals for 2018 is to do what I can to start to reverse this trend of so many young people leaving Powys and the ageing of our local population. This is not something any AM can do on their own. It has to be a collective effort, involving local politicians and organisations, business groups and community leaders listening to the young and responding to their needs. Oh, and by the way, providing good mobile ‘phone coverage and fast internet speeds is only a part of the solution. In a post-Brexit world it will not be easy, but as your local AM I promise to do all I can to make it happen.

News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s Local Beacon column, a further burst of traditional winter weather is forecast and the Powys County Council gritting fleet is on notice, not for the first time in 2018. It has been really heartening to see members of the local community pulling together over recent weeks, when the temperatures plummeted, helping vulnerable friends and neighbours, by checking on them, doing a little shopping or checking their paths were clear and free of ice. Our communities are blessed with many local people ready to rally around, not just in times of snow and plunging temperatures, but also to raise funds for those in need of help. Only recently the Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) Group held its AGM at Gwernyfed Rugby Club, reflecting on a very busy and varied year of activities. It is great to see how HBTS4R has inspired people of every generation to provide support for those who have come to Wales fleeing abuse, persecution and violence. They are currently appealing for chess sets and children’s games, as well as dictionaries and encyclopedias. Donations can be made at Talgarth Library, St Mary’s Church, Hay on Wye and the Welsh Liberal Democrat Office at 4,Watergate, Brecon. Another local initiative that has gained widespread support is the Drew Barker-Wright Charity, which aims to fund research into and raise awareness of the Paediatric Chordoma, as well as providing practical support to families affected by it. The recent Warming Winter Supper at The Bakers’ Table was a sell-out, raising £1,244.75 for the cause. Anyone interested can follow the Charity’s activities on their Facebook page. If you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to get in touch by email: president@welshlibdems.org.uk. On Friday, 9th February from 3pm, I have a joint surgery with my Welsh Liberal Democrat colleague, Kirsty Williams AM, in Talgarth Library. For an appointment with us, please contact the Brecon and Radnorshire Constituency Office on: (01874) 625739 or by email: kirsty.williams@assembly.wales Best wishes, William

The elements control our lives and seasons We can only wonder at the reasons The best laid plans run into trouble Making our pace move at the double The Winter months appear in many guises It is hard to accept their sly surprises Damage is wreaked as if in spite It saps up all our strength and mite The winds are harsh and take your breath Situations quickly turn into life or death We recall moments whilst erstwhile Longing for someone to beguile The stars shine through the clouds at night Staring out as if in fright The thought of Spring injects new life With plans, ideas and far less strife Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet.
