Get to really know... Martin Birkhead Martin was born in Yorkshire, and is proud to be a Yorkshire man. He came to Brecon 15 years ago and now owns the Tea Emporium in Ship Street, Brecon. Place of birth? Elland, Yorkshire. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Riding my push bike, miles and miles.

Where do you live now? Llanfaes, Brecon. Marital status? Married to Gaynor. Pets? None, don’t have the time to look after them properly. Used to have a 6 foot long tropical fish tank. Out of all the teas in your shop, which is you favourite tea? Well, it really depends on the time of day, but I would always go back to “Darjeeling Margaret’s Hope”, a classic smooth and full of flavour Darjeeling. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Blue Peter. Are you a collector of anything? Only tea related items. If you had a superpower what would it be? The ability to second guess the next question someone asks me. What is your first thought when you wake up? Milky Oolong tea.

Name one thing you love about being an adult: Being able to choose right from wrong. What’s your favourite song of all time? In a Broken Dream, Python Lee Jackson. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning? Get into the shop and sort out the parcels before the post office gets too busy. What would be your dream job? I am living it now, informing people about tea and the stories connected to it. Sum yourself up in five words: Crazy, workaholic, music, family, sport.

What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Did I really do that today? Most exciting thing you’ve ever won? UK Scout Parascending cup. Two lessons life has taught you? a) Never judge a book by its cover. b) It is never greener on the other side of the fence, just different.

Tea Emporium 13 Ship Street, Brecon

Suppliers of the finest loose leaf teas from around the world, over 250 varieties to choose from

What make you grumpy? Poor customer service. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Some to Cancer research who have look after Gaynor brilliantly over the last few months. Expand the business quicker. Take time out to push Brecon forward and increase the visitor numbers. Have any bad habits? Not being able to sit still. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Bad driving, bad manners, bad time keeping. Do you believe in the afterlife? No. What have you done in your life that would surprise someone meeting you for the first time? I have about 50% of my body covered in tattoos. Best present ever received? Scalextric of course.

Local Talent: Laura Dennis

Type of Artist? In the broadest sense, I am a fine artist and illustrator. I’m inspired by so many things which really reflect across my work but I’m especially intrigued by relationships, people and animals. Range of Products? Original watercolor and oil paintings as well as Limited Edition Giclée Prints.

Price range? £120 - £2,500+ How long have you been an artist? I left formal employment about 2 years ago to pursue my practice on a full time basis and have never looked back! Where did you train or gain experience? I initially studied a BA Art and Design at Leeds University, but I would say the majority of my experience has been gained postuniversity via hours of experimenting and developing skills through independent practice. The internet is a wonderful thing which allows us all too constantly learn and update skills, so if I’m not painting or drawing I’m constantly seeking to develop technical skills in any way I can. Artist statement: My work is primarily concerned with exploring relationships and all the nuanced emotional responses that they evoke. In particular, both personal relationships and how tradition and society influences the relationships we have with different species of animals. For example, in a recent series I explored themes relating to hunting practices which see particular species hunted and others not. My work does not seek to pass moral judgment on such practices but rather highlight the differing emotional responses they evoke. In terms of personal relationships, my practice is very much a personal response to ones that I have experienced and seek to draw out all the varying emotional responses that bear from them. My choice of media often reflects the message behind my work, for example, I’m

fond of using water colour to portray animals as I feel the delicate nature of the medium is an apt reflection of their fragility and transient existence. Whereas for my figurative work I prefer to use oil paints, capturing the human form in this traditional medium allows me to layer in movement and atmosphere in a way other mediums cannot. More information about my practice can be found at lauradennis.co.uk or you can find me on Facebook, just search @lauradennisart Where can your products be purchased? You can buy direct from me, all my contact details can be found at www.lauradennis.co.uk or visit me on Facebook by searching @lauradennisart or Instagram @lauradennis_art. As well as original art and giclée prints I also accept a limited number of commissions for landscapes, portraits and for painting family pets, so please do get in touch via laura.c.dennis@googlemail.com for all commission enquires. My work can also be found locally in Brecon Tap and Laura Lea Designs in London. What has been your proudest moment? There have been lots of highs and lows on this journey but I would say my proudest moment was when my work ‘Kaleidoscope’ was selected by Saatchi Art to be included in their Bohemian Chic collection. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? Umm, a tricky question, I would say my work ‘Pause Before the Parade’, which was selected for Oxford Art Societies Exhibition, is my ‘masterpiece’. It’s now in a private collection but it’s a piece that I worked on for so long it became almost a part of me! The work portrays the Queen’s Guard below Parliament waiting to go on parade for Her Jubilee Celebrations in 2012. The scene shows is a candid portrayal of the Queen’s Guard relaxing before work and I was so inspired by the unique and usual glimpse into this ancient regiment I just had to paint it.

Have you any future plans for your work? Yes, I’m holding my first solo show next year so I’m currently developing a series of work for that. This year I intended to really push the boundaries of my figurative art which is exciting. You’ll be able to follow my journey via my social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

What advice would you give a local artists? Be brave and bite the bullet! I speak to a lot of artists whose art practice is treated as a second priority to other aspects of their lives, if you’re serious about art you need to make it the thing you do with the majority of your time. Also believe in yourself and practice, practice, practice! What other local artists do you admire? I suppose the most obvious would be Meg Stephens, her work is extraordinary and I really admire her for the hours of dedication that she put into each piece. Her ability to capture the Beacons and the flora of our beautiful landscape was second-to-none.

St Michael’s Church, Brecon Following Catholic emancipation in the first half of the 19th century, plans were made to build a Roman Catholic church in Brecon, despite opposition in the town. Up until then Mass had been celebrated in a number of different locations (including a room over a pub). Charles Hansom, a renowned architect, was engaged to design the church, which cost just over £1000 and opened in 1851. Father Peter Lewis was appointed Parish Priest in October that year. Famously it was to be the venue for the wedding of the famous opera singer from Craig-ynos, Adelina Patti, to Baron Cederström in 1899. A parishioner reported that “When the decorations were taken down after the wedding, the shabby state of the interior was emphasised” and as a result the aisle was tiled and the walls panelled, as well as other improvements made. A simple building, it has changed little over the past century and a half, although the panelling has disappeared and the pews are modern. On view at the back of the church is a list of the incumbents of the parish from 1642, together with another of priests connected with Brecon who were martyred for their faith during the difficult years of the Reformation. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

GARDEN CHRYSANTHEMUM These flowering perennials are native to Eastern Europe and Asia and typically grow to about 18 inches in height. The large, ornamental flowers produced can be a range of colours depending on variety. Chrysanthemums require little care to grow and can thrive in the home garden with only routine maintenance. The Chrysanthemum is a welcome late summer and autumn showing plant perfect for beds and borders. ‘Pot Mums’ are a popular variety of the chrysanthemum which are perfect for pots and planters. The flowers produced also have the added benefit of providing perfect cutting material for floral arrangements. Plant your pot mum in a sunny location but not direct sunlight if possible, this may fade the blooms. Fertilizing your plant just before it blooms will encourage the plant to grow the best flower heads possible. Remember to remove any spent flower heads; as the blooms die pinch or clip them off. This ensures all the nutrients and moisture available goes to the new buds and blooms, helping a longer bloom period. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in September

It’s not impossible that someone might spot this walking along the Wye in Brecknock or Radnorshire and it is quite distinctive as the picture shows. This is because it crops up sporadically in our area from seed washed down from populations higher up the river.

Dipsacus pilosus Small Teasel This is a rare plant for us but its common relative, Common Teasel will be well into the seeding stage and attracting goldfinches by now. Small Teasel tends to grow in shady spots – often near rivers, and flowers at this time of year.

The name “Teasel” for plants of this genus is derived from the larger plant’s historical role in the cloth industry. Teasels were used both for “teasing” out the fibres of wool before spinning and for raising the “nap” of the cloth after weaving. The latter process required a special Teasel plant with hooked spines. These “Fullers Teasels” are still found in the wild as remnants of their commercial production for the industry. They were even used in the age of mechanised mills with Teasel heads being attached to the iron mechanisms. The plant illustrated gets its name from its relatives’ usage and had no commercial importance. John Crellin

What should you do if HMRC makes an ‘emergency’ tax raid on your pension cash?

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING

When you take a lump sum from a pension under the new ‘pension freedom’ arrangements, HMRC use something called an ‘emergency tax code’ and in most cases this results in you paying far too much tax. HMRC are in effect assuming that you will make a whole series of withdrawals over the course of the rest of the tax-year at the same level as the initial lump sum and that this would take you into a higher tax bracket. They make this assumption even if you have no intention of taking any further withdrawals.

F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

Since the new system came in, tens of thousands of people have had to claim back hundreds of millions of pounds in overpaid tax. Yet despite the government’s own ‘Office of Tax Simplification’ asking HMRC to have another look at it, HMRC have recently announced that they are quite happy with the way the system works. There are three forms which you can fill in to claim back overpaid tax, depending on your specific circumstances. For someone who has taken a partial withdrawal but left money in a pension pot, form P55 needs to be completed. For someone who has emptied their pot and is no longer in work, the form is the P50Z. And for someone who has emptied their pot but is continuing in employment the form is the P53Z. Tax doesn’t have to be taxing! – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

New Season Starts For Orchestra

Brecknock Sinfonia’s 2018/9 season begins at Brecon Cathedral on Saturday 22nd September with a programme that mixes musical high spirits with moments of reflection. Mozart’s ‘Overture to the Magic Flute’ begins the evening in jaunty style, and then Dvorak’s ‘Czech Suite’ brings the composer’s infectious blend of melody and rhythm to the fore. The main work is Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony. Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’ was recently voted Britain’s favourite piece of classical music with the ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ not far behind. The Fifth Symphony, though less familiar, shares the same gift for haunting melody and pastoral peace. The concert begins at 7.30 and tickets are on sale at the door. Full details of all the orchestra’s concerts and background are available at www.brecknocksinfonia.co.uk.

Nibble at the ground on which I strolled, Hoping to steal a view of you, of home, A sight which I seemed never to behold. I threw myself upon the rocks and wept For minutes, days and years that I had wasted. If only time, like sand, could have been kept, And life been swallowed whole instead of tasted. If only I could climb upon your shore But I am weak. And time? There’s never more.

Friends of Brecon and District Mind HUSH DON’T TELL: Artist Mary Husted on the adoption, when a teenager, of her baby, their reunion after 44 years and how this has influenced her work. Wednesday 12th September,The Muse, Glamorgan Street, Brecon, 7pm. £5 (Friends / Members £2). At the age of seventeen, in the early 1960s, art student Mary Husted was pressured into giving away for adoption her ten-day old baby. At this time illegitimacy could still blight the life of a child and she had been sent away, hidden from sight, until the baby was born. With just a few drawings of him she remarried twice and had four other children. Left, too, with memories and imaginings the earlier event deeply affected her and, perhaps inevitably, emerged in her art. Forty-four years later, though, a remarkable sequence of events led to a reunion with her son. The Friends of Brecon and District Mind have, on Wednesday 12th September, invited Mary Husted, who lives in Barry, to talk at the Muse, Brecon, from 7pm about her experience, the complex web of related emotions and how her artwork has reflected it. Mary moved to Wales in 1979 and, between 1986 and 1990, studied for a degree in fine art at South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education. Her work concerns image, memory and landscape, box works being illusionistic devices portraying the ambiguity of nature and the location of things. Much of her work, though, exploring family, loss, identity, things veiled, hidden and revealed, has, unsurprisingly, been influenced by earlier events in her life. Becoming reunited with her adopted son in 2007

gave rise to a series of works entitled Hush Don’t Tell and an exhibition at Murray Edwards (formerly New Hall) College, Cambridge. Indeed, as will be explained, the College and its art collection played a key role in bringing them back together. Mary has long kept notebooks, including sketches, and this practice has evolved into developed artworks. Since 2011 a project, toured internationally and entitled Open Books: artists and the Chinese folding book, has involved artists filling blank folding books. Mary’s current work, mostly derived from nature in collage, drawing and watercolour, derives from a Chinese-influenced reverence for accidental marks. These contribute to books, framed works and wall-mounted boxes. The Friends support the work of Brecon and District Mind and raise awareness of mental health issues in and around Brecon, Crickhowell, Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. It is open to everyone and holds talks, walks, social activities and fund-raising events. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

As another summer draws to a close I always reflect back and look at how the festivals and events here in Brecon and Radnorshire attract tourists to our area and the effect that has on our communities. In recent months we have been blessed with weather that has attracted tourists from across the globe to our beautiful area. Events such as the Hay Festival, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Green Man Festival and the Brecon Jazz/Fringe Festival are vital to our area and bring in hundreds of thousands of people over the summer months. I believe it is vital these shows are given the promotion and recognition they deserve. Event organisers, volunteers and local politicians must come together to ensure these events continue to grow, thrive and increase their appeal. Every year I try to attend as many of our festivals and events as possible to show my support for what is being done to promote some of the finest event in Wales. Between now and Christmas I intend on meeting with various businesses and organisations to see what they believe needs to be done to help increase tourism here in Brecon and Radnorshire. Not only to our big events, but all year round to help small businesses across Brecon and Radnorshire grow. As a constituency we face many challenges, but tourism is an area of continual growth that we must make the most of to ensure Brecon and Radnorshire is a place known around the world for its natural beauty and unforgettable atmosphere.

GLANUSK SERVICES Sennybridge, Brecon, LD3 8PS

Kirsty Williams

I hope you and your families are having an excellent summer. It has been great to see so many of you at our fantastic shows and cultural events around the constituency. These events are a big part of our way of life here in Mid Wales and I want to place on record my thanks to the countless organisers and volunteers who make them happen. I try to speak to as many people as possible at these events, and one of the key issues that keeps coming up is access to healthcare. People recognise it is a challenge, delivering health services in such a rural area, and recognise the hard work done by our superb NHS staff, but they still demand and deserve good access to those vital services. You may remember from a previous column that I have been trying to improve ambulance response times in the constituency. In recent months I have had meetings with patients, paramedics and Welsh Ambulance officials. In August, I also visited one of the Ambulance’s call centres to see how the calls are handled and ambulances are dispatched. It was a fascinating and humbling experience to see the high pressure calls being handled in a calm and professional manner. The conversations I had in these meetings were crucial in helping me understand what the problems we face are, and how we can overcome them. I will make sure the things I have learned will feed in to my work in the National Assembly for Wales. I will continue to do all I can to improve healthcare in Brecon and Radnorshire and there is more to be done, if you have ideas on how things could improve, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Please call my office on 01874 625 739, email me at Kirsty.Williams@ assembly.wales, or write to me at 4 Watergate, Brecon, Powys, LD3 9AN.

65 Years Experience in the Building Trade

Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth

new Builds, extensions & conversions Refurbishments & renovations

Over recent weeks, since the intense heat and drought of June and July gave way to the sunshine and showers of early August, many have come to appreciate the increased moisture levels. Gardeners and allotment holders have been glad of the respite and farmers have seen their pasture fields recover a little, easing the intensity of the fodder crisis which has been so widely predicted. As many areas of our national life suffer from human induced uncertainty, it is almost reassuring – and certainly levelling – to be reminded of the importance of food and water security. We have cause to remember the vital contribution made by Dwr Cymru and other utility workers, as well as by farmers, who work regardless of the elements to feed the nation and to maintain our export trade with our European neighbours. Local Beacon readers may recall that, following last year’s Powys County Council elections, I was nominated to join the Dyfed - Powys Police and Crime Panel, an appointment subsequently confirmed by the Home Office. Dyfed - Powys Police covers a vast rural area and, as citizens, we all depend upon the police at key points in our lives. For further information about the Panel’s work in holding Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, to account, please visit our website: www.dppoliceandcrimepanel.wales/ All Panel meetings are open to the press and public, and with the prior permission of the Chair, individual residents can ask questions or make a statement in relation to policing matters. From this autumn, our proceedings will also be webcast, to make our work more open and transparent to the wider public across the Dyfed-Powys force area. As youngsters look forward with a mixture of hope and trepidation to their return to school or college, our community can reflect upon a successful and eventful summer, with Talgarth Sports 2018 back in July and Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains in more recent days amongst the highlights. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email: president@welshlibdems.org.uk on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016 Best wishes, William
