Hello Welcome to our November issue of Local Beacon.

The community magazine encouraging local residents to use what’s on their doorstep

For the town of Brecon and the surrounding villages Address: Goosepool Cottage Winforton Herefordshire HR3 6EB

12 years ago we started the sister publication, Wye Local. Over those 12 years my step son has gone from toddler to teenager, I’ve had two successful IVF treatments with two extremely characterful children to show for it! The team has grown from just one (me) to myself and eight others with three delivery teams. We’ve launched two other monthly magazines, one family magazine, and the annual calendar that has been going for 10 years! And I worked on a different time zone to the rest of the team when I lived in Shanghai for 14 months. I wonder what the next 12 years has instore for us at Cariads Local Ltd. Read more on page 22. The Party Time feature returns on page 26 & 27. I love the festive season, a time to have several get togethers over the coming months, from the works do to a good ole night out with friends. Within the feature you’ll see some local businesses who can help you look your best for that special night out.

Photographers Name: Edward Lancaster.

alongside some incredible cinematographers and my pictures tend to have a cinematic quality about them.

Where Do You Live: Brecon.

What is your favourite local point of beauty: The Brecon Beacons are ever inspiring and I’m always discovering new places. The beauty of things to me is often hidden and not so obvious, beauty is often in what is not seen, and lies beyond what the eyes can see or assess.

Occupation: I work in the film and TV Industry. Amateur or Profesional Photographer: I take commissions and have featured in travel journals and particularly enjoy taking portraits. Ultimately it is for other people to judge. If Professional where did you gain experience: I worked as a photographers assistant when I left school and have worked in the film business ever since. I have worked

Top Tip to Local Photographers: Try not to imitate what other photographers do, the most important thing about taking pictures is the person doing it and why they are doing it. Anything you would like our readers to know about you: I once went to India and bought a camel and crossed The Great Thar Desert on it. It was fantastic. Website: www.elphoto.co.uk

The Ursuline Order of Nuns, Brecon The order of Irish Ursulines, so-called as it was dedicated to St Ursula, recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of their arrival in Brecon. In September 1948 six Thurles Ursulines and one sister from Waterford joined two Blackrock sisters to make a new foundation in Brecon. They took over the Convent and St David’s School in Glamorgan Street, which had for forty-five years been owned and staffed by the Daughters of the Holy Spirit (also known as the White Nuns because of the colour of their habits).

The Ursuline Order, in which women dedicated their lives to the service of the Church through the education of girls, was founded in 1535 in Brescia by Angela Merici, an Italian religious educator [Painting of St Angela Merici by Pietro Calzavacca]. It is the oldest order of women in the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to teaching. St Ursula was recognised as the patron saint of school girls.

The order opened St Joseph’s Primary School in 1950 and the sisters devoted themselves to education and pastoral work. They quickly became a part of town life, but sadly both schools have closed and the community now has only two sisters remaining.

Wild in November

Protecting wildlife for the future

find it on a roadside verge or in a hedgerow though – and, where it is found, it might well be mistaken for a moss. But, as the picture shows, this little plant does have veins to carry water and nutrients. Mosses are more primitive and lack well-developed distribution systems. These ferns (there are two closely related species that grow in this area) are dependent on a damp environment and so are found clinging to rocks in permanently wet places such as the gorges our waterfall country streams flow through. Below the north face of Pen y Fan is another area they can be found – in rocky crevices that never dry out.The leaf is only one cell thick and so cannot survive drying conditions at all well.

Hymenophyllum wilsonii Wilson’s Filmy Fern Ferns are taken for granted in the countryside without most people realising how many different types there are. This is one of the most unusual and grows in quite a few places in the county. You won’t

All ferns pass through a stage where a very damp environment is essential as they develop – with the ubiquitous Bracken being the best adapted to drier conditions. John Crellin

Ignoring the stock market could cost your child £21,200: Parents who only invest into tax free cash accounts could miss out

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING

Cautious parents who leave their children’s savings languishing in cash could be missing out on thousands of pounds. Figures compiled for Money Mail reveal families saving into tax-free children’s accounts over the past 13 years could have made up to £21,000 more by investing the money in the stock market, rather than cash. Parents looking to save for children aged under 18 today can open a tax-efficient Junior ISA.

F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

These allow family and friends to contribute up to an annual limit, which is £4,260 this tax year. In 2011, Junior ISAs replaced Child Trust Funds (CTFs), which had been on offer since 2005.These initially allowed parents to save up to £1,200 taxfree each year, but this has increased to £4,260. Both allow savers to invest money either in cash or the stock market. If someone had put £1,000 into a typical savings account every year since 2005, their nest egg would have been worth £14,355 at the end of September, according to figures from investment firm Fidelity. Yet if they had invested the same amount into the FTSE All Share Index, their cash would have grown to £25,314 — an extra £10,959. Shares can significantly outperform cash over the long-term. You don’t need to be too cautious too soon because there is plenty of time to recover from any stock market “corrections” along the way. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Riddles of the month - for fun! 1. I am somewhere far below, where no light goes. Here, all a man can do is hack away until at last the shiny things reveal themselves. What am I? 2. I may be hard, I may be rough, bound in the round to claim a love. What am I? 3. I can be naked, I can be covered; but just keep me peeled, and the wonders you’ll discover. What am I? 4. In the light, I may reflect. In the dark, I’m cold and wet. What am I? 1. A gold mine. 2. A diamond. 3. Your eyes. 4. Water.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Cariads Local Ltd – 12 years old! When was the business started? Wye Local launched in Hay-on-Wye in 2006. What made you set up the business? I’d worked in the printing world since I was 16 years old. I’d briefly worked in Sales, one job selling mobile phones, another selling advertising space. So I felt I had the skills needed to set up Wye Local. Hay had a lot going on, a great high street and ample tradesmen/women but there was nowhere affordable to promote events or services. Expanding to cover Talgarth several months into the launch worked extremely well. Do you have ambitions to grow bigger? Right now, no. Earlier this year I separated from my husband, so now it’s about finding the right family and work balance. The children are getting older and I’d like them to get involved into local clubs and classes. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up to date? As a team we get together every quarter to see if we can improve our service, consider if we can include any new features, and listen to what our readers and customers are saying. We welcome any feedback, good or bad. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1) If something doesn’t go to plan, just take a deep breath and decide how you’ll solve it. Don’t panic, there’s always a solution. 2) Delegate, delegate, delegate! At first I thought I had to do everything myself. Now I delegate to a team member who can often do it better. We all have our strengths and weaknesses – it’s important to realise what these are. What is your ideal customer? A positive/happy one. Just as in life generally, I’m all about surrounding myself with positive vibes! What is your greatest achievement in your business? Working around my young family and meeting deadlines. I have a 14-year-old stepson, a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. When one of the children has been up all night projectile vomiting, it’s tough. I’m sure other working parents reading this will relate! Many of us do it and when we nail working and parenting, for me it feels like the best achievement ever. As a team, if one of us is struggling, we all chip in to ensure we meet our monthly deadlines. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? A wonderful, loyal team. Back in 2006

it was just me. As the magazine grew and I decided I wanted to launch other publications, I took on my first team member, Clare, in 2008. Now, in 2018, Clare is still putting up with me, along with Davina (accounts), Robert (events and deliveries), Jess (design and proofing), Laura (sales and proofing), Nicole (design and admin), Gill (credit control), Max (sales) and three small delivery teams. List three goals on your business to-do list: 1) Grow Local Ludlow. Five issues in, we’re getting good feedback. Ludlow has a super community feel so I’m sure it could be as successful as Local Beacon and Wye Local. 2) Move our three monthly magazines onto a new magazine software that will make us more efficient from sales through to accounts. 3) Throw a party! I had planned to do this in 2016 when it was our 10th anniversary... but I temporarily moved to Shanghai. Perhaps we’ll wait until our 15th anniversary... Name one regret you have about your business: I don’t. If we’ve done anything that’s received bad feedback, I or one of the team correct it. Life’s one big learning adventure. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Multi-tasking with a hint of delegation. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? On numerous occasions people have thought Clare was my mum! Even more so in the early days as my maiden name was Williams. Clare liked people thinking she was the boss! Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? I suppose just that we want to help local businesses. We work with businesses, we don’t just take your money for the advert and run. We like to offer features to accompany your advert – this promotes you further and it makes our magazines unique and interesting to the readers, so it’s a win-win. What do you know now that you wish you’d known before starting your business? You are always representing your business. So a night out, a few ciders on board, you’ll always bump into a customer and have to snap into ‘professional Lisa’. Sum your business up in five words: Friendly, helpful, affordable, informative, LOCAL.

Q&A with: Dressed to Impress How many dresses do you currently have in stock? Ooh, hundreds, literally. I have over 100 evening and prom dresses, over 100 mother-of-the-bride/groom outfits and occasion dresses, about 70 bridesmaid dresses and 40 wedding dresses.

If you don’t have my size, are you able to order it in? If yes, how long does this take? Absolutely, as long as the supplier has it in stock and the style is offered in your size. Sometimes if the exact style is not available in your size I can find something similar that is. Also, most of the bridesmaid dresses I have in stock can be ordered in sizes 0 - 30. Delivery times vary and can be anything from 1 - 12 weeks depending on what is being ordered. What would be your advice to someone looking for that special evening dress? Well, I would first want to know what kind of event they were going to. Some events have a theme so I can help them choose something that would fit the theme; some have dress codes which eliminates some styles of dresses and some are red carpet type events so I would advise a bit of glitz and glamour. Of

course, if there is going to be a lot of dancing going on I would advise to steer away from a dress with any kind of train, and if the evening will include a multi-course meal I’d advise choosing something elegant but comfortable. Why should people come into your shop rather than shop online? Firstly, because they can try on many different styles right there and then to find out what suits them, without having to try on and send things back in the post. Secondly, because I can give customers an honest opinion before they buy and can help them choose something that looks great on them. Thirdly, they can see and feel the quality of the dress and fabric before they purchase, and lastly it is much easier to match up accessories with a real item than it is with a picture. However, if people really want to shop on line they could shop in our online shop at www.dressedtoimpressonline.co.uk! Do you have anything for men? Actually, yes we do! We have 2 and 3 piece slim fitting suits as well as tuxedos and ties. We can also order waistcoats, bow ties and cravats in your wedding colours.

Christmas Card Shop opens in Brecon supporting a wide range of charities It is that time of year again when the Cards for Good Causes pop-up charity Christmas card shop opens in Brecon at our usual venue of St Mary’s Church, Brecon. The church is situated in the centre of the town, just look out for the tower. The shop will be open from Thursday 18th October until Saturday 15th December, 2018. Opening times are 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Saturday.

In 1959, James “Jim” Jackson, Secretary of the British Diabetic Association, gathered a group of medical charities together to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling charity cards at Christmas. In 1964, they began selling cards from empty shops in town centres. The name “Cards for Good Causes” was first mooted in 1971, but it was not until 1988 that it was formally established as the trading arm of The 1959 Group of Charities.

Buying Christmas cards through Cards for Good Causes is the best way to get access to the widest selection of Christmas cards available, as well as a fantastic range of seasonal gifts and products, while supporting a range of national and local charities. There is a wide range of Christmas card designs, as well as traditional advent calendars and candles, wrapping paper, gift tags, napkins and stocking fillers and more. The Christmas cards are all printed on top quality card and there is something to suit everyone. Staffed by a team of local and invaluable volunteers, the Brecon pop-up shop is part of a network of more than 300 temporary shops run by Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation. It represents more than 250 charities including Cancer Research UK, Barnardo’s, NSPCC, Alzheimer’s Society and RNLI as well as a number of local charities. In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which the charities pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT. Why not get ahead in your Christmas preparations by getting your cards early. Jean and Liz, the shop managers, look forward to seeing everyone during the run up to Christmas. Shop Opening Hours: Thursday 18th October until Saturday 15th December, 2018. 10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Saturday. Shop Address: St Mary’s Church, Steeple Lane, Brecon For further information visit www.cardsforcharity.co.uk or follow on Facebook or Twitter.

VIBURNUM The Viburnum group of both evergreen and deciduous shrubs is a large one indeed and is able to provide beauty and interest all year round. So much so in fact that Viburnums could be chosen as a plant for every month! Most have white or pink flowers, many are sweetly perfumed, some have berries in colours ranging through yellow and red to shiny black and most of the deciduous varieties have an autumn colour display to rival even the Japanese Maples. In November the evergreen Viburnum tinus has glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of red, pink or white buds which will provide colour all winter until they open into small white or pink flowers in spring. At the same time the Viburnum bodnantense group, including “Dawn” and “Charles Lemont”, are showing their richly coloured autumn leaves to be followed by sweetly scented, rose tinted flowers which last into winter and beyond. Also at this time of year Viburnum opulus – the Guelder Rose – is showing off its red, maple like autumn leaves and its rich red, translucent fruits which last well into winter. If that is not enough, in the summer the shrub is covered in flattened clusters of white flowers like those of a Lacecap Hydrangea.

Viburnums are hardy, easy to grow shrubs and can be controlled in shape and size by pruning as soon as flowering is over. They will grow in sun or semishade and do best in a reasonably fertile, moisture retentive soil. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

Oyez, Oyez, Oyez, roll up for Brecon With Bells On! Saturday 17th November, 12 noon - 6.30pm This year’s Christmas Extravaganza is extra special as the town’s new Christmas lights will be seen for the first time. Another first in Brecon is that a woman, Marie Matthews, will perform as The Town Crier. The Extravaganza will begin at 11.45 am with a parade from the Struet, down Lion Street and ending up at the main stage on the Bulwark. It will be led by the Brecon Samba Band and a new spectacle - Dinky Donkeys. At 12 noon the Mayor, Councillor Manny Trailor will officially open proceedings. Live entertainment will follow on the stage and in Bethel Square until the switching on of the new Christmas lights at 6pm. There will be a vast choice of drinks from cocktails and mulled wine to non-alcoholic beverages. Two marquees will be situated outside the Guildhall and St Mary’s Church selling festive produce and goods. The Market Hall will house the Craft Fair. The Kids’ Zone with Santa’s Grotto will be even more exciting with street entertainment and fun activities for children of all ages. Teenagers can show off their Xbox skills by visiting The Gaming Van, another new addition. This year’s best dressed shop/business window competition theme will be Brecon With Bells On. The Mayor and Chairman of Brecon Chamber of Trade, Brian Popsys, will adjudicate on Friday 16th November with the three finalists appearing on stage at 6pm during the Extravaganza to receive their prizes. This fabulous event brings the whole community together to show Brecon at its best and twinkling in new lights this year! Local Talent: Emma Bevan Type of Artist? Felt-maker.

Range of Products? I create paintings and sculptures with native fleece, as well as brooches, faeries, angels, felted soaps and kits. Price range? My prices range from £5 to £500. How long have you been an artist? I have been an artist all my life. Loving to lose myself in drawing, writing and photography. I have been a fibre artist for 6 years, since my cancer diagnosis, when I was introduced to felt-making. I fell in love with it and now I run workshops as well as take part in exhibitions and shows. Where did you train or gain experience? I am self-taught, with lots of reading and research too. I first trained as printmaker in the University of Arts, London, in 1990. Where can your products be purchased? You can order from my Etsy shop, https://www.etsy. com/uk/shop/FfolkyFfelt, or by emailing me on emma@ffolkyffelt.com What has been your proudest moment? When I was told that my work had inspired others to begin their creative journey. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I love all my pieces as they are like my little woolly children! But I think the piece I am really proud of is my Swan, made for the Refuge exhibition for The Brecon Womens festival. Designing and making it pushed my boundaries of creativity and confidence. Have you any future plans for your work? I feel very

lucky that I am busy all year round with commissions and making for shows. I have a plan for a particular exhibition, but it’s under wraps until all the parts of the jigsaw are in place, and then I can let you know all about it! What advice would you give a local artist? To keep on keeping on. Create for yourself, no matter what others think or say; if it makes you happy doing it, then make sure you find a little time each day to do something. Art is too often shrouded in mystery and portrayed as unachievable - it should be threaded through our everyday lives as an essential, because it feeds our souls and our imaginations. Art is fun, healing, educational and always beneficial. What other local artists do you admire? I am a huge fan of Karin Mear, Rebecca Buck,Toose Morten, Adele Nozedar, Francesca Kay and Sarah Adby. Look them up, you will love their work! Artist statement: Emma Bevan, FfolkyFfelt – felt and fibre art. I live in the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains of Wales, from where I draw much of my inspiration; I am also inspired and intrigued by folklore. I love to combine traditional skills with contemporary designs. Felt-making allows me to explore my relationship with nature and the environment, to create art whilst being hands-on and immerse myself in its tactile and soothing processes. The wools I use are sourced locally, and hand-dyed. Using local wools creates another link between myself and the landscape, and I enjoy knowing the story behind my fleece, and the farmers who provide it. I use traditional techniques such as wet felting, and more modern methods of needle felting, often combining the two. All my creations are lovingly hand-crafted in my

studio. I create a variety of designs and receive many commissions for bespoke pieces. Due to the handmade nature of my work, each piece will be unique. As a qualified tutor and artist, I love to teach as well as create, and curate several exhibitions and arts and crafts events. I also run regular workshops at various venues such as; The Makers Mezzanine, Denmark Farm Conservation Centre, Felin Fach Griffin, River Cottage, and Green Man Festival. My workshops and courses range from 1-2-1 sessions at home, to large groups at national events. I began my journey with printing, pencil drawing and photography, training at The London College of Communication (University of the Arts). I discovered felt making during treatments for cancer, and it not only reconnected me to my creative roots but provided me with some practical ‘therapy’ too. I fell in love with the versatility, the tactile and therapeutic nature of feltmaking, and its alchemical processes. I am a member of the following International Feltmakers Association, the Heritage Crafts Association, and the Campaign for Wool. I am also the Creative Director of The Makers’ Mezzanine, an artisan gallery situated upstairs at the Whitney on Wye Carrot & Wine Stores. I can be contacted at: www.ffolkyffelt.com emma@ffolkyfelt.com

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

With conference season now over, it has been a real eye opener as to what direction the major political parties want to take the UK in. Labour’s conference showed just how far away the party hierarchy has come from its voter base in places like the valleys of South Wales which overwhelmingly voted for Brexit in 2016. With the party now looking at the possibility of rejecting the people’s vote of 2016 and holding a second EU referendum in the hope of getting the result they want. Labour politicians openly called for increasing corporation tax by 50%, supporting a general strike and even nationalising the internet. These calls show just how out of touch Labour are with the electorate on the major issues facing our country. Since 2010 the Conservatives have radically cut corporation tax, helping businesses of all sizes to put their hard earnt money into employing new staff and improving their businesses. Compare this with Jeremy Corbyn’s vision which would suck money from our economy and put thousands of jobs at risk. All because Labour believe their Government know how to spend taxpayer’s money better than taxpayers themselves. I believe the Conservative Party Conference offered a more positive, realistic vision of Britain, a country that has had five years of consecutive economic growth, a country that despite the negativity of many over Brexit, has the highest levels of employment on record, especially for women and young people. The media only focus on Brexit, but the Conservative Government are getting on with the day job of running and improving the country, whilst simultaneously negotiating our successful withdrawal from the European Union.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

Storms - I hope you and your families are OK after the recent storms. The heavy rain and high winds made for treacherous conditions right across Brecon and Radnorshire, and it will be some time until all the damage is fixed. I’d like to place on record my thanks for the work of the emergency services and others who helped people cope in terrible conditions. Also a personal thanks to the fire crew who helped remove several inches of flood water from my constituency office late one evening. Rural Schools - Last week, as Cabinet Secretary for Education, I launched the “Rural Education Action Plan”.This is the first time the Welsh Government has had a specific strategy to help schools in rural areas. Reforms in the new action plan include: a Small and Rural School grant to encourage innovation and raise standards; a new ‘E-sgol’ project that will use video technology to connect classrooms so that pupils from one school can join classes at other schools remotely, a strengthening of the School Organisation Code in respect of a presumption against the closure of rural schools, and additional funding to improve connectivity in rural schools.

Saturday 24th November 7.30pm Brecon Cathedral

I recognise the challenges of delivering education in rural areas and am proud to be implementing these changes to help our children have the best possible start in life. Universal Credit - In October, full Universal Credit (UC) service for all claimant groups was launched in Brecon and Radnorshire. The Jobcentres included are Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Ystradgynlais. Universal Credit will replace, ChildTax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Working Tax Credit. People need to be aware of the changes because where UC has been rolled out in other areas there have been major problems with rent arrears, increased referrals to food banks and many other issues.

Tickets £15

(Children/students free) from: Webbs of Crickhowell, The Hours Brecon by phoning 01873 810935 online at: www.crickhowellchoralsociety.org

I am very worried about the impact these changes will have on some of the most vulnerable people in our society, so please alert and try to help people you think may be affected.

At the same time, our Prime Minister and her senior ministers are engaging in a hectic programme of shuttle diplomacy to Brussels and other European capitals, attempting to unblock the current impasse with representatives of our 27 EU counterparts, ahead of the final deadline for a Brexit Deal – or No Deal. Whatever the ultimate outcome, it serves as a timely reminder that, in spite of the turbulence and problems that we bring upon themselves, as individuals and nations, nothing can trump nature, when it comes to her sheer force and potential impact. Whilst Brecon, Builth Wells and Crickhowell suffered mainly short term effects, we think especially of those who lost their lives in Carmarthenshire and across the land. This time of year is always poignant, as we recall in Remembrance those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation. This year, of course, the intensity of emotions will be all the greater, as we come together in events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. South Powys Veterans Groups are organising an Armistice Centenary Commemoration on Saturday 3 November 2018, 12 - 2 pm, at the “Marking Time” Woodland Walk, in the grounds of Bronllys Hospital and afterwards at the Hospital Chapel. The event is supported by Powys Teaching Health Board, Bronllys Hospital and Community League of Friends, the Bronllys Well Being Park (CLT) Ltd and the Powys Armed and Ex Forces Forum. As well as involving members of the armed forces – past, present and future – and their families, the hope is to reach out to the wider community. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact me by email: President@welshlibdems.org. uk , on facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. I very much look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes,
