FOCUS ON

Many Fields, Pen-y-Crug, Brecon by Siân Lloyd.

Photographer name: Siân Lloyd. Where do you live? Brecon, Wales. Occupation? Artist. Amateur or professional photographer? Amateur photographer. How and when did you get into photography? I was introduced to photography on my foundation course in art and design four years ago and have taken it up as a casual hobby since then, however over the past year I have been putting more thought and effort into my practice.

What is your favourite local point of beauty? There are many places in the Brecon Beacons that are very beautiful, but for me I find myself returning to Peny-Crug just a short walk away from Brecon town as it has a beautiful panoramic view of the peaks of the Brecon Beacons. Top tip to other local photographers: A tip that I have for other photographers is to go back and visit places more than once. Each time you visit a place try going at a different time of day, a different season or even with different weather, that way the photos you take will be drastically different giving off a different feeling even though you may have visited and photographed that place multiple times. Anything you’d like our readers to know about you? You can find more of my photos over on my instagram page @sianlloyd.

POINSETTIA The Poinsettia could have been specifically designed for Christmas with its bright red halo and festive green foliage. However that red halo is not just a pretty face: It’s the secret of the Poinsettia’s popularity. It can last for months because the red halo consists of long-lasting leafy bracts rather than soft petals that shrivel up quickly. This allows the Poinsettia to look its best for up to 12 weeks or more. Poinsettias come from Mexico and they were discovered by Joel Poinsett in 1825 and were associated with Christmas even then. Poinsettias need bright but not strong light away from strong sun and draughts. They need a minimum temperature of 13 to 15 Celsius (55 – 59 Fahrenheit). It’s also a good idea to be careful when transporting Poinsettias from the garden centre to your home in the winter, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage the foliage. Once home water Poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out. With care Poinsettias can be kept for a second year but they tend to develop into woody, leggy shrubs. It’s much better to save up the pennies and buy another that has been cosseted and encouraged into growth by a regime of good food, greenhouse lights and heat! Finally if you would like a change from the traditional red bracts. There are now new varieties with dusky pink, pale yellow, deep plum or cream bracts and some even have variegated leaves. Every home should have one this Christmas. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

The Construction of Brecon Cemetery By 1856 the Priory Church [Brecon Cathedral] burial ground was overcrowded and it was decided that a separate burial ground should be provided for the Church in Brecon. A joint burial board [St. John and St. Mary] was elected and the first meeting was held in the Guild Hall in January 1857. The chairman was the mayor, David Thomas, who explained the difficulty in obtaining a suitable site. In October 1857, however, five acres of Court Farm were purchased from Sir Charles Morgan for £620.The site was approved by H.M Inspector of burial grounds. The tender made by Messrs Griffiths and sons, builders from The Watton, was accepted. They were to build two chapels, a lodge and entrance gates as well as the boundary wall, roads and pathways within the cemetery site. On 23rd December 1858, Bishop Thirlwall of St David, consecrated the ground allotted to the Church of England. The construction price of £3,000 was loaned by certain benefit societies of the town and the loan, with interest, had been paid off by 1879. Brecon Cemetery is the municipal burial ground and is maintained by the Environmental Department of Powys County Council. www.blfhs.co.uk

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in December

at any time in December are the lichens. Probably most associated with rocks, many lichens such as this one make use of trees to support them in the light. There are many of these strap lichens to be seen on older trees in our area all through the winter, often making a great display. All lichens are made up of a close association of a fungus and an alga (or bacterium), both of which depend totally on each other. Fungi cannot themselves grow using sunlight, but the algae that live with them in lichens can. It is estimated that 6% of Earth’s land surface is covered by lichens of which there are at least 20,000 known species.

Ramalina calicaris Cartilage Lichen I always try to show a picture taken in the month in question in this piece. No surprise then that December is, for this purpose, the hardest month! One group of “plants” that gives as good a display as

The lichen shown is quite rare but does grow locally. It has much more common close relatives of similar appearance though. Many thanks to Ray Woods for showing me this one. John Crellin

The devil is in the detail: How 40% taxpayers will lose half their Budget giveaway to extra NI (but pensioners won’t) The biggest rabbit out the hat in last month’s Budget was a tax cut for more than 30 million workers. The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, claimed the move would save basic rate taxpayers £130 a year and higher earners a significant £860. However — as ever — the devil is in the detail and changes to National Insurance Contributions (NICs) buried in the small print mean that not everyone will save this much. We can earn up to £11,850 — the so-called personal allowance — before we begin to pay basic rate tax at 20 per cent. Those in England and Wales start paying the higher rate 40 per cent income tax at £46,351.

The Tories had pledged to increase how much we can earn tax-free to £12,500 and to increase the threshold at which 40 per cent tax is started to be paid from to £50,000 by 2020. Mr Hammond announced that he would be introducing these rises a year earlier than planned -- this is clearly welcome news for taxpayers but the tax break isn’t as generous as it first appears. Mr Hammond failed to mention that NICs will also be going up — which will eat into some of those savings for higher earners. It means that anyone who currently earns over £46,350 will see their NICs increase from 2 per cent to 12 per cent on a slice of their income. This effectively halves the 20 per cent income tax saving on the same slice of income – or put simply reduces the annual tax break by up to £360. Pensioners will avoid the tax grab as they don’t pay NICs. These upcoming changes are an example of how Mr Hammond has given with one hand but taken with the other. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

December at TB! This December begins with a festive treat fromThe Royal Ballet as we screen their production of Christmas classic The Nutcracker (Mon 3rd). In the screening Tchaikovsky’s much-loved music is matched to a magical adventure on Christmas Eve for Clara and her Nutcracker doll. Things then take a horrible turn with the arrival of the Birmingham Stage Company and their two time-travelling shows, Terrible Tudors and Awful Egyptians. In Tudor time audiences will find out the fate of Henry’s headless wives and attempt to survive the Spanish Armada as it sails into the audience! Their second show, Awful Egyptians, takes you back even further to the time of Ramesses the Great where you will enter the Gates of the Afterlife. National Theatre Live’s December offering is Antony & Cleopatra. (Thu 6th) Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo play Shakespeare’s famous fated couple in his great tragedy of politics, passion and power. Brecon Town Concert Band presents A Christmas Celebration Concert (Mon 10th) featuring hits from the 1950s onwards. Lyrics will be projected onto a big screen to allow audiences to sing along with the band. The festive theme continues in The West End at Christmas (Wed 12th) which will feature hits from the musicals alongside the best of Christmas song. Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story, A Christmas Carol, is brought alive by Chapterhouse Theatre Company complete with beautiful period costume, song, dance and a magnificent musical score. Join us as Scrooge’s frozen heart begins to melt and he finally embraces the festive spirit. Bringing 2018 to a close for us will be Only Men Aloud (Fri 21st) on their Decade Tour. The choir has achieved a lot in the last ten tears, from winning a Classical Brit Award to performing at the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony! December’s Art Society Brecknock talk comes from Geri Parlby with The History & Art of the Nativity Crib (Tue 11th). Covering the festive period in the Andrew Lamont Gallery will be an exhibition of ceramics and artwork from the South Wales Potters Group and the Swansea Print Workshop Collective. I confess I read for relaxation, not edification, and re-read books endlessly for the writing, the characters and the conversations. So nothing too deep here! inker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carré - I love le T Carré’s writing, particularly his characters and especially his Europeans, each with their unique and quirky language.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - A great love story, and a compelling heroine, who only has her strength of will to carry her through. Ringworld by Larry Niven - Science fiction is important to me. Niven’s 3D vision of a unique world and his inimitable aliens capture my imagination. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein The moon as a future Australia-like penal colony, written in an entertaining Russian-flavoured English.

The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov - Written before Chaos Theory spoilt everything, these books chart the fall of one Galactic Empire and the rise of the next via psychohistory, the science of predicting – and diverting - the actions of a galaxy full of humans. Going Postal by Terry Pratchett - Only Pratchett could pivot an entire fascinating book on a single stupid joke, and yet the story goes far beyond his usual one-liners. Excession by Iain M Banks - Part of Banks’s Culture series, this tale of incomprehensible aliens and quirkily clever artificial intelligence keeps you guessing to the end. Whip Hand by Dick Francis - Anything I happen to know about horseracing comes entirely from reading Francis, and his heroes are always male, invariably jockeys and sometimes preachy, but there’s something inspiring about them anyway. Gaudy Night by Dorothy L Sayers - Sayers puts her hero, the noble detective Peter Wimsey, through the wringer to win – finally - the heart of his spikily insecure love Harriet Vane in this wonderfully intelligent tale, set amidst a poison-pen scandal in a 1930s Oxford college. “What present from where?”

Special Christmas presents? Hand-made in Wales Browse with Local Makers

That yearly dilemma which presents itself is; ‘what present from where?’ So where do you find something different, something which receivers will like, something they haven’t seen before? A present needs to be special, and made with love, to show how much you care. The best place to look is Beacons Crafts in Bethel Square Brecon, which has been making, crafting, and selling for over twenty years. Beacons Crafts has lots of different artists, makers and craftspeople, from all over Wales and the borders, bringing their products to sell. All of the people, who ‘man’ the shop, are volunteering craftspeople, which also make and sell in the shop. This means that customers can always talk to someone who knows, or can find out about the products on sale. The varieties of crafts cover many different materials, and often the processes

Beacons Crafts also stocks many individual and different Christmas cards, in English and Welsh. It is this diversity and uniqueness which brings together happy people, receiving wonderful pieces of exceptional craft, to treasure for years to come. So now you know ‘where’, just come and decide ‘what’. Article supplied by Beacons Crafts

What Makes Us Special: Brecon Chocolates

HANDMADE CHOCOLATES FROM THE HEART OF THE BRECON BEACONS

We make all the truffles on the counter and our own design book related chocolate solid bars, ourselves, (apart from the liquor cherries and dark chocolate coated Turkish delight), in our temperature and humidity controlled workshop above the shop. We use Welsh unsalted butter and cream from our local milkman, delivered to our door, daily. We use ingredients from my garden including homegrown mint, rosemary and wild strawberries. We also use Wye Valley lavender. We use local Welsh gin, whisky, Glyndawr brandy, Barti Ddu rum (and raisin truffles). The permutations of flavours are endless and there’s always something new on the counter. Using fresh ingredients means our chocolates only have a 3 month shelf life, so we make small fresh batches regularly.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

The Autumn has come and gone in the blink of an eye. Throughout the Autumn period I have been busy in both Westminster and in Brecon and Radnorshire. Around my usual duties as your MP, hosting various surgeries across the constituency and voting on a number of pieces of legislation in Parliament, I have been pushing the profile of Brecon and Radnorshire both in London and at home. After months of organisation last month around 70 members of Talgarth Male Voice choir and their partners descended upon Westminster. My team and I took them for a tour of the historic buildings before they were due to sing in a more modern part of the Parliamentary estate – Portcullis House. Many Parliamentarians and Lords stopped to listen and from here we went for a drink in Strangers bar, where the choir would spontaneously break into song mid drink. Much to the delight of those already enjoying a drink, many of whom joined in and sung along with us. It was definitely a night myself and the Talgarth Male Voice Choir will not be forgetting in a hurry. This year’s Armistice Day marked the 100 year

anniversary of the ending of World War One.

Our community has close ties to the military and it was fantastic to see that all over Brecon and Radnorshire, members of the public including families and veterans turned out in huge numbers to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us. I attended services in Hay, Glasbury and Brecon and also had the great honour to read a lesson and be part of the unveiling ceremony of the WW1 Memorial Bench and Wildlife Garden in the Brecon Peace Garden.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

Throughout November Powys County Council ran a consultation survey on its Cabinet’s plans to introduce a green garden waste kerbside collection service, but remove the remaining green waste banks from the ‘bring’ sites around the county. Residents will have to pay for the service, although how much is undecided, and the waste will be recycled or composted. Not a lot of people know that the council actually already collects green garden waste at the kerbside with the three-weekly ‘black bin’ collection, if one purchases the appropriate orange sacks. But that waste unfortunately ends up in landfill. This new proposal emerged many months ago and the survey I have been running on Facebook on the issue has provoked a strong reaction. The vast majority of people support the idea of a kerbside green waste collection, but 90% are against the removal of the green waste banks situated in many of the county’s main car parks. Indeed, I know that those waste banks are often full-to-overflowing and that local people in all areas are very annoyed about the suggestion that they should be removed. But it seems, from the recent comments made by the council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Waste and Recycling and the way that his consultation survey has been designed, that he is determined to remove the green waste banks. I suspect he had already made his mind up about this before the council went out to consultation, but I do hope that if enough people indicate that they want the green waste banks to be retained that he will reconsider. We need both collection methods to maximise the recycling. Now, a bit of good news. There have been recent delays in the rollout of the Welsh Government-funded 30 hour Childcare Offer in Powys – the system by which parents in work can place their 3 and 4 year olds in a registered childcare/pre-school setting for up to 30 hours per week free of charge. So I was very pleased to get confirmation recently from the Minister for Children and Social Care that Powys County Council will begin delivering the Childcare Offer in January 2019 in two areas of the county, including the Gwernyfed High School catchment. Full rollout will happen across the rest of Powys by April 2019. Please do contact me anytime on kirsty.williams@ assembly.wales or 01874 625739.

News from William Powell

GLANUSK COUNTRY STORE

Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth As I gather my thoughts for this final Local Beacon column of 2018, there has been a distinct autumn chill in the air, the same chill that we felt when we gathered at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. It was an immense privilege for me, as current Chair of Talgarth Town Council, to play my part in the solemn commemoration of 100 years since the guns of the Great War fell silent. Reading aloud the names of the fallen, in that war and subsequent conflict, made me reflect on the sacrifice of so many and on the debt that we owe them. It also reminds us all of the importance of working for peace, in our own community and in our national life, in these turbulent times. Talgarth is currently undergoing significant investment on a number of fronts, and, inevitably, that brings with it a measure of disruption. The majority of local residents in our wider area are coping admirably with the disruption caused by the current closure of the A479 Bronllys Road, as Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water press on with their sewerage renewal work. While we have to build in a little longer for local journeys to allow for the diversion, the main lesson for all of us is just how much we take for granted the links between the communities of Talgarth, Bronllys, Gwernyfed and Brecon. I am staying in close touch with the Dwr Cymru team as it is all our interests, residents, businesses and community groups alike, to keep the closure period to a minimum. I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks, at one of the several community events signalling the season of Advent. The Christmas Market is being held at Talgarth Town Hall on Saturday, 1st December, ahead of the Christmas Lights switch on that evening. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issues of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email: President@welshlibdems.org.uk on Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016 I would like to take this early opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas,
