Candlelight Vigil to mark White Ribbon Day On November 20th representatives from the Powys Brecknock Federation of WIs attended a Candlelight Vigil on the steps of the Senedd at Cardiff Bay to show solidarity with victims of violence against women across the world. Following a short walk around the Pierhead building, supporters were addressed by Mair Stephens, Chair of NFWI-Wales; Joyce Watson AM; Julie James AM, Leader of the House; domestic abuse survivors Lisa Flavin and Bethan Morgan; Detective Superintendent Anthony Griffiths, Dyfed Powys Police; Chisomo Phiri, Women’s Officer, NUS Wales; and a representative from the political parties – David Melding AM, Rhun ap Iorwerth AM, Caroline Jones AM, and Jack Sargeant AM. Soprano Sofia Kirwan-Baez from the RWCMD also performed a repertoire of contemporary and traditional songs. The NFWI (National Federation of WIs) has been campaigning for the elimination of violence against women since 2008 – raising awareness of its nature, extent and impact. Since 2012 NFWI-Wales has been working with Joyce Watson AM, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, to encourage men to pledge their support to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. As part of the campaign, WIs across the country recruited local male groups and decision-makers. By signing the pledge ‘Not in my Name’ and wearing a white ribbon, men across the country sent out the message that domestic abuse is never acceptable, should never be ignored and must never be excused. Hopefully readers will have seen plenty of white ribbons on show in and around Brecon last month! To find a local WI for you please ring the Federation office (Tuesdays 11am to 2pm or Fridays 10am to 12.30pm) on 018740622666, or email powysbrecknock@gmx.co.uk.

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in January
It is a naturalized alien plant that has been known on old walls in West Malling (Kent) since 1882. We came across a close relative, Small Toadflax (Chaenorhinum minus) below Penwllt Quarry in pasture late in August this year. That species is one that has been in the country since at least medieval times. These Toadflaxes are named Trwyn-y-llo in Welsh which means Calf ’s Nose. Our pavement visitor being Trwyn-y-llo Caint (Kent) and the small one Trwyn-y-llo Bach (of course!).
Chaenorhinum origanifolium Malling Toadflax This little flower isn’t native in these parts but has inhabited our pavement cracks and spread quite a long way after escaping from a neighbour’s window box. It can flower at any time of year, providing welcome colour at unusual times of year when conditions suit it.
Common or Yellow Toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) or Llin y Llyffant* – not a “Toadflax” at all in the Welsh - is a slightly more distant cousin and is frequently seen (by passengers) when driving on the A40 through the county in late summer. There is yet another common relative that creeps around many of our town walls – Ivy-leaved Toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis) or Trwyn-y-llo Dail Eiddew. * Frog Flax I think! John Crellin

Only one in eight millennials think they will have a better quality of life than their parents, as they struggle to get good jobs after university
INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE
“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING
Only one in eight millennials think they will have a better quality of life than their parents, a report reveals. In contrast, one quarter of pensioners believe their generation has had the best living standards, having come of age in the post-war years. It is thought the pressures of the employment market, high rents and high house prices are taking their toll on the nation’s young people and making them more pessimistic than their parents and grandparents.
F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority
The study, by the Social Mobility Commission, also found only 15 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds think their generation has the best chance of moving up in society. Also, only 12 per cent of millennials believe they will fare best in terms of personal finances, compared to older generations. Dame Martina Milburn, the commission’s chairman, said: ‘If we fail to act, too many young people will continue to face challenges getting into colleges, universities and employment.’ The report was published to coincide with a new £2million grant from the Government for the commission to carry out more research. We think that it is important to understand why millennials don’t feel confident about their futures. Traditionally younger age groups are the most optimistic and even if in reality their futures are better than they had expected, it can’t be good for them or society if they have such a negative outlook. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Powys Befriending Service... Powys Befriending Service supports people aged over 50 who are isolated, to maintain their independence and improve their social networks. For varying reasons, some people might need their support to get out and enjoy a social activity, join a lunch or café group, meet new friends or learn new skills. They have trained and supportive befrienders who offer their time to assist those in need. Individuals can self-refer or with permission someone else can refer for them. If you are over 50, live in Powys, are at risk of losing your independence, are socially isolated and want to meet new friends and have fun – call the Powys Befriending Service and see what they can offer. They are also looking for volunteers to help improve quality of life for others. Can you spare at least 2 hours a week? Are you reliable, a good listener and enjoy the company of others, could you put a smile on someone’s face? Could you visit people in their own homes, or maybe you would like to run your own local group? With some training, support and a DBS check they can offer you various opportunities from telephone befriending, transport help, befriending in your local community, or helping organise and support an existing group in your area. If you live in the South Powys area, please give Caroline Massey a call to discuss how they can help you, whether through volunteering or to become a client and access their service. For more information contact the main office 01597 822191, call Caroline on 07900 523276 or email at caroline.bull-massey@pavo.org.uk.

Varied & Exciting Brecknock Sinfonia’s January concert is always given to the string section, and this year they have a varied and exciting programme from three centuries to show their talents.
They open with Bach’s irresistible Brandenburg Concerto no. 3, a dazzling mix of dance rhythms, catchy melody and virtuoso playing. The other works are arrangements for string orchestra of two famous and very different quartets. Shostakovich’s Eighth Quartet is one of the finest of the twentieth century. Writing at a time of great personal anguish and political pressure from the Soviet government the composer faces his troubles with dignity and sadness of his music. In contrast, Dvorak’s American Quartet is the work of a composer at ease.Written in a rural Czech settlement in the USA, just after the New World symphony, the quartet is full of melody and folk idioms. Brecknock Sinfonia’s next full orchestral concert will be on March 16th with music by Respighi, Mozart and Haydn.

Paula Davies Beauty Therapy
I’m not one for pampering myself, but I’ve now realised that I could become one of those ladies who spoil themselves and have treatments every week! In the middle of December I had the chance to visit Paula Davies BeautyTherapy at Rhydywernen Farm just outside Brecon on the A470 Cardiff road. Plenty of free parking! Farmer’s wife Paula invited me into her lovely warm salon. You’d never believe it was once a garage. On Paula’s birthday, 24th January, it will be the 6th anniversary of her starting up her beauty therapy business and it’s going from strength to strength. I’m not surprised at all! As well as Swedish Massages, Paula offers all sorts of nail treatments - you should see the list of what she offers - from acrylic nails, shellac, luxury manicures and even something called minx! She offers facials, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, make up, ear candling, waxing and spray tans. You name it, she does it and her price-list looks reasonable too. We started off in her upstairs salon with a Shellac manicure for me which was fabulous, just in time for Christmas. Shellac is a chip-free polish with a highgloss finish and lasts for approximately 2-3 weeks. I chose a gorgeous colour called Wildfire which I thought would go just perfectly with the pillar-box red poncho I wore over the festive period. It did and I had loads of compliments!
on heart, that this was just the best one I have ever had. I could have stayed on that bed a lot longer! Paula has just the right touch and can spot any problems you have. She’s got a good understanding of the anatomy I would say. I had a couple of ‘knots’ on the left side near my shoulder blade (scapula bone) so she worked on them for a while. I suffer from a few back problems now and then, but the next day I felt brilliant. I highly recommend a visit to Paula - she will take care of your every need. Now I know why all these ‘other’ ladies go for massages, facials, etc. every week. Maybe I’ll be one of these ladies... when I retire? Thank you Paula. I had a really lovely time. Review written by Clare Williams
The upstairs salon is where Paula’s Pamper Parties take place, for both adults and children. The children absolutely love it, so if you are planning a party for your little girl, get in touch with Paula for a Princess Package. She will give them an amazing time which they will never forget. The package includes a mini manicure, mini pedicure and nail art. They come out feeling like true princesses! Wedding packages are also available, so if you are the one who’s got that special day approaching, do get in touch with Paula. After the Shellac manicure, which dries immediately, we came back downstairs for my Swedish Back Massage. I was looking forward to this. The lights were dimmed and soft music was playing. A good start. I’ve had quite a few massages in my life, and I can honestly say, hand

Health is Wealth
One of my most quoted sayings is Health is Wealth. However, all too often people look at investing in their health as an expense, when, in fact, it should be viewed as an investment. When we think of our own face we would describe its primary purpose as to view, communicate and interact with the world around us. Increasingly though, our appreciation of how it also provides us with the means to impact the body’s other systems is being better understood. The face reflects what is going on inside, similar to traditional ancient Foot Reflexology. I also practice Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage, Indian Head Massage and Hot Stone Reflexology at Brynteg Natural Therapies. How does Facial Reflexology work? With its close proximity to the brain and cranial nerves through gentle compression techniques we are able to stimulate key reflex points that beneficially impact our internal organs, central nervous system and neurobiological systems. This can stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms, improve circulation and nerve conduction and encourage the release of toxins from the body via the Lymphatic system. Apart from the holistic benefits to your entire system, Facial Reflexology is also beneficial in helping to promote the production of new skin tissue, stimulate facial nerves, blood flow and muscles and strengthen the layers of the facial tissue improving skin tone. The face reflects what is going on inside and the aim is to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Facial reflexology can not only help with imbalances caused by everyday living but with a treatment plan over a number of weeks may also help with specific health issues.
Health and Beauty all wrapped up Featured frequently in the National Press, Zone Face Lift can eliminate the need for Botox and offers a natural alternative to dermal fillers. It’s all about ageing well. It naturally stimulates collagen and elastin from the inside, tightens, plumps, sculpts the neck line, smooths and lifts the face, leaving a glowing complexion after just one treatment. In addition this programme helps to release emotions held in the face leaving you looking softer, happier and calm. Yoga for Restoring and Lifting Energy Levels Yoga is suitable for those who want to maintain their current fitness levels, while also being great for those who want to establish a new fitness regime by gently leading them into improving their energy levels, flexibility and strength without putting unnecessary pressures on the body. Yoga allows you to quietly burn away the excess weight while also increasing the efficiency in the body which can be operating at strained physical or emotional stress levels. Correct yoga practice improves the metabolic activity in the body with a greater removal of toxins from the system while also taking the pressure off the heart; this in turn has many more beneficial effects throughout the body. In yoga there is a strong emphasis on breathing. When correct breathing techniques are combined
with stretching and strengthening postures this further enhances the power of the yoga practice. It’s not necessarily the number of repetitions but the concentration and precision in each technique that brings the deeper more profound effects. Yoga sessions will also include a relaxation practice which will allow the body to properly rest and reenergise itself.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
The current situation in Westminster has been widely advertised across social media and our traditional media channels such as the radio and TV. I have made various TV and Radio appearances to air my views and have been inundated with letters, emails and messages on social media by constituents asking me to vote a certain way or back a certain individual. I always take the time to read these messages and ask various groups and organisations their views before rushing to a decision, so I thank

you all for your engagement and interest in the current political situation. If you ever want to see my position on a major political topic, I always put my statements on my Facebook page and website. Due to the media, many would believe that we are just dealing with Brexit and no other legislation or work is being undertaken by MPs. This could not be further from the truth, yes Brexit is taking up time that could be dedicated to other matters, but we are cracking on with the day job of being MPs for you. I continue to meet with local businesses, individuals and organisations across Brecon and Radnorshire and over the coming months I have various surgeries planned. I have surgeries in, Ystradgynlais, Llangynidr, Llangorse, Llyswen, Glasbury, Crossgates and New Radnor. Newss from

Kirsty Williams Happy New Year! Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!
With the uncertainty hanging over us with regard to our future relationship with Europe, I detect an air of unease among even the normally calm people and communities of this area. It’s an unease I share, as by the time you read this I doubt that the paths that the UK and Wales will be taking in the coming years will be any clearer. It is often said that history repeats itself. I am reliably told that much of today is reminiscent of the 1970s. From the end of March the UK will be outside the EU as it was then. Public services across the UK are in great difficulty as they were then. Similarly for those that can remember, the political battles at Westminster are imbued with a sense of crisis and the nations of the UK are uneasy and deeply divided over the big issues of the day, as they were in the 1970s.The Festive Season may have disguised it somewhat, but a sense of pessimism and even anger among many people is easy to detect, both in my conversations with constituents and the contents of my email inbox and postbag. That there are increasing numbers of people falling into difficulty is not in doubt. So, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to re-double my efforts as a Welsh politician to ensure that, whatever happens in London and Brussels, those in society here in Brecon & Radnorshire and across Wales who are least able to cope in this time of change, are protected and supported as best they can be. This should be our top priority as politicians, at whatever level we are working, not least because a society that cares for and nurtures its most vulnerable is one most likely to be less divided, more content, more economically successful and bestplaced to shed that sense of fear and pessimism. It worries me greatly that while the politicians at Westminster have been wrestling with the great dilemmas of Brexit, the interests of ordinary people and families across the country have received less attention than necessary, which has fed that sense of anger and frustration.

News from William Powell
Peter Evans
Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth As I write, we are well into the season of Advent and many Christmas gatherings for people of all ages have already taken place in our community. By the time that this New Year edition of Local Beacon lands in your letterbox, it will be time to reflect upon the old year and look ahead to the new, with everyone wondering what 2019 holds in store for us, our families and community and those we hold dear. It is naturally also a time when we think of those who are no longer with us - and recall the part they have played in our lives and in our community. 2018 has once again brought with it more than its share of challenges, difficulties and unpredictable events. Our world feels like an even more unstable place, where journalists abroad and those who have found refuge in our own country can be targeted and even killed, with the complicity of governments, some of which we count as trading partners. In this context, the greater the level of stability we can retain in our relations with our Continental friends and neighbours, and the freer the flows of labour and trade that can be achieved, will surely be in our shared national interest. Decisions in Parliament and elsewhere in the coming weeks on Brexit will be critical in determining our future for decades to come. One vital public service locally that is looking to extend its volunteer base is Talgarth Fire Station. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity should call in at the Fire Station in Cottage Lane on any Tuesday evening, between 7:00 and 9:00pm. Alternatively more information is available via the website www.mawwfire. gov.uk or by contacting the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service on (01267) 242636. It would be a really positive New Year’s resolution, if we were to commit ourselves afresh to recognising and saying thank you to those who do so much to enrich our common life. Maybe some of us could also lend a hand, if we have the capacity to do so. There IS such a thing as society. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by email: President@welshlibdems.org.uk on Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Brecon to Hay Cycle Path
Following two successful events we have now secured funding to perform an outline feasibility study of a possible cycle route. This is being performed by Sustrans, who have considerable experience in similar projects. The outcome will be whether a path is possible, what route it might take and what major and minor obstacles will need to be overcome in the planning phase. Thank you to everyone who came to our coffee morning in Llangorse and to the quiz at The Three Horseshoes in Groesffordd. These were well-attended events that raised £146 and £111 respectively. If you would like to be kept updated about future developments and events, please follow our Facebook page, Brecon to Hay Cycle Path, or email freya.m.morgan@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list.
