All the exhibits are members’ own work and will be open to the public for viewing from 1pm. Entry is just £1, and you’ll be provided with a programme detailing the competitions. Brecon to Hay Cycle Path The team behind the Brecon to Hay Cycle Path have just received the report from their initial feasibility study, which represents exciting progress for the project. The study was conducted by cycling charity Sustrans and suggests that there are long stretches of the original railway line that remain intact. Much of the infrastructure along the 25km line is in reasonable condition. Alternative routes have been suggested to bypass areas that have been built on and these will provide a focus for further discussion. The committee will meet shortly to discuss the report, after which they will make the findings available to the wider public. They would love to hear from anyone who has knowledge of or interest in the proposed route, including landowners and those who live and work adjacent to the old railway line. You can contact them on Facebook: Brecon to Hay Cycle Path, or by email: brecontohaycyclepath@gmail.com.

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in April
the flower if quite elusive even for us. So, it is a particular delight to find this little flower in a wet woodland as we did up near the Elan reservoirs when this picture was taken. Perhaps because of its shyness, there is little folklore concerning this plant, but it is a food source for both the Pearl-bordered fritillary and its Small relative (Boloria euphrosyne and Boloria selene). Sadly, only the Small Pearl-bordered fritillary is likely to be seen in the county these days but there is plenty of food available for the larger relative. Small Pearl-bordered fritillarys were seen at Vicarage Meadows Nature Reserve last year.
Viola palustris Marsh Violet It is the time of year for Violets in general but one you won’t normally see, unless you seek it out, is the Marsh Violet. As its name suggests suitable habitat is likely to be off the usual walking routes. We quite often see the leaves on Brecknock Botany Recording group outings in wet marshy places but
These butterflies feed on Common Dog Violet leaves as well but the leaves of marsh violet grow very abundantly after flowering in suitable habitats. If you are interested in joining Brecknock Botany Group walks do contact me via my blog at http://bit.ly/breckbot John Crellin

Tax burden at highest level for 50 years: Households pay more than at any time since 1969
INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE
Britain is facing the highest tax burden since the days of Harold Wilson as the Treasury squeezes more cash out of families and businesses. The Exchequer is expected to rake in £737.4billion of tax revenue in 2018-19, up from £699.7billion last year, driven by higher payments from workers. It will mean the overall tax take is equivalent to 34.6 per cent of Britain’s economy, a level not seen since Wilson was Prime Minister in 1969-70, when the figure hit 35 per cent. Much of the increase in taxes is driven by surging employment, with 3.5m more people in work since the Conservatives came to power in coalition in 2010.
“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority
The unemployment rate, meanwhile, has fallen to 4 per cent, its lowest since the 1970s. When employment is higher more people pay national insurance and tax. Rising wages also boost the take. Income taxes will make the biggest contribution to the state’s coffers this year, up from £180.6billion to £192.4billion, according to the OBR, followed by £137.7billion from national insurance and £131.7billion from VAT. As a result, the deficit, which is the difference between the amount the Government spends and what it earns from taxes and other income, will be lower than previously thought. It will total 1.1 per cent of national income this year, or £22.8billion. By 2023-24, it will drop to just 0.5 per cent of GDP or £13.5billion. The improvement in the public finances means Philip Hammond has left himself the opportunity to open the chequebook in the Autumn Budget, if and when we have more clarity on Brexit. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

BUSINESS PROFILE
DDFitness
When was the business started? September 2018. What made you set up the business? I have always wanted to work for myself and I felt that the time was right. Where are you based? Brecon. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Eventually I would like my own unit and to run Bootcamp retreats abroad. Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualifications up to date? Not all of my qualifications require updating every year, some are every 3 years. I do however attend at least 3 - 4 CPD courses a year to bring variety to my sessions, keeping them challenging, but fun. What is your ideal job / client? My ideal job is what I’m doing now, and my ideal client is someone who understands that getting fit and healthy is a marathon and not a sprint. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Increasing the size of my class participants in such a short space of time. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Hard work and good organization skills. What has been the biggest help to building up
your business? Word of mouth, recommendations from clients to friends and colleagues and social media. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: It’s early days, so to date nothing. List five goals on your business to-do list: Complete my website, set up Bootcamps for both cooperate and weight loss clients, run classes in other areas of Brecon and the surrounding areas, run my own phase 4 cardiac rehab classes, and purchase a van. Name one regret you have about your business? I wish I had started sooner. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting up? Empowering clients to enjoy exercise again and give them the confidence to achieve their goals. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? Too many funny episodes to mention! Is there anything else you’d like people to know? I’m ex-military, so believe in creating that team ethos in all of my classes. I also play international hockey for the Welsh masters.

Street Names In Brecon 2 The Watton - The road was previously known as Wacketon in 1556. The exact meaning of the name is unknown but possibilities include: Wac – personal name or Wacor (old English) for wicker or willow. Ton or tun – Old English word for an enclosure or dwelling. –ton is the most common English place name element in Wales. Tredegar Street - The Morgan Family of Tredegar in Monmouthshire dominated the political scene of the area for many years up until 1832. No properties use Tredegar Street as an address as there are no front doors opening onto the road. Glamorgan Street - In 1585 this road was known as Morgannwg Street. It is likely that the street is named after the Morgan family, maybe the same family as Tredegar Street. Lion Street - The name comes from the Golden Lion Inn which was in the building at the entrance to Bethel Square – the arch was used by the horses into the stable yard. The Inn was in the buildings either side of the arch and are still connected across the first floor. Free Street - This street was outside the town walls and therefore the place where trading was free from taxes. The remains of the town wall can be seen behind Watton Mount (at the top of The Watton). www.blfhs.co.uk

Also a friend who helped me shape what I needed to say when I lost my son. Her poem Lambskin captured that day. About Looking by John Berger - Essays on looking and seeing, how we interpret, imagine and perceive. How what we look at and how & what we see can be so different. A Gentle Plea for Chaos by Mirabel Osler - She echoes my difficulty with rigid garden design and the preference for giving nature more free reign. Being able to take time to observe nature and let it shape us. Article supplied by Lynn Clausen of Raven Drama

The Brecon Hive
We are a small team of business owners, all living and working in Brecon, who came together to tackle the jobs everyone says someone should do something about with the aim of making Brecon the best place to be. Our main project to date is the rejuvenation of the Peace Gardens in Brecon which had sadly become overgrown and underused. This project began with two of our members, Jules and Drew, who fundraised to install a memorial bench and stone for the Falklands War. Since The Brecon Hive took on the task we have cleared areas of overgrown weeds to create a Wildlife Garden, have worked with the Brecon Nepalese Community to install a WWI bench and have held fundraising events to install a WWII bench, bought with funds from the people of Brecon. Last Remembrance Week we created a Poppy Cascade using recycled plastic bottles, we have planted 30 native hedgerow trees which were donated by The Woodland Trust and we will shortly plant trees donated by Chris Davies MP as part of HM The Queen’s “Commonwealth Canopy”.
Our latest installation was the Peace bench, which is next to the Peace monument and we plan to renew the planting around the monument, install a statue of St Francis of Assisi and have verses from his prayer for peace on plaques around the garden. The next stage of our project will be a Sensory Garden, which we are creating in conjunction with the students from the Supported Learning Department at Brecon College. The students are growing herbs from seed, both to sell to raise funds and to create the taste section of our Sensory Garden, and are also working on Peacethemed totem poles to install inside the Sensory Garden. The Facebook page for our project is:‘the brecon hive peace garden project’ and we also have a webpage: thebreconhive.wordpress.com. We can be contacted at thebreconhive@gmail.com Article supplied by The Brecon Hive

Crickhowell Music Festival 25th Anniversary! It’s time to celebrate as the Crickhowell Music Festival marks 25 years of incredible music-making. The Choral Society-led festival programmes have always strived to breathe new life into both familiar and less well known masterpieces and drawn in an array of notable performers. Honouring this achievement and picking up on the celebratory mood, the weekend includes a dramatised performance, directed by award-winning director Tom Guthrie, of Purcell’s Fairy Queen (a magical work which opened the very first Festival in 1995) and a stylish performance of Bach’s mighty Mass in B minor. Centre-stage will be a much anticipated star-studded line up of singers, including the Royal Wedding soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, acclaimed tenor Nicholas Mulroy and mezzo-soprano Catherine King to name but a few! The party atmosphere will continue at the Festival’s Folk Night (Monday) which features Welsh Trio ALAW, following their enthusiastic reception at last summer’s BBC Proms. Also highlighting the Festival’s track record, there will be an emphasis on young people’s involvement. Elin Manahan Thomas’s vocal masterclass for the choir’s Choral Scholars, held in collaboration with Crickhowell High School, will no doubt prove an inspiration for all. Pupils will also be providing the dancers for Purcell’s wonderful Fairy Queen masque. Crickhowell Choral Society’s 25th Music Festival promises to be something special so come along and join us in the celebrations!

Outdoor Nursery sessions! Over the last 30 years the understanding of the benefits of outdoor learning for children have been growing. Learning happens from everyday experiences that we have; those things that we do rather than just hear or see become the basis for growth. In a high-quality outdoor learning setting children are more able to:• Problem-solve, with reflective and inquisitive thinking. • Grow holistically. • Identify hazards and risks. • Appreciate nature, along with a love and respect for all things living. • Work collaboratively and improve communication skills. • Become self-aware, build confidence and self-esteem. • Understand how we can look after our environment. • Access both physical and mental health benefits.
• Develop both gross and fine-motor skills. Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu is working in partnership with Dail Bach CIC to provide an outdoor classroom facility here in Brecon. Sessions will be provided both as stand alone childcare or as part of the wider childcare services offered by Cylch Meithrin. Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu has been delivering the 30 hours of funded childcare since January. This, in addition to a range of fee-paying options including flexible sessions, term-time only contracts, Foundation Phase Funding, Employer Childcare Vouchers, Holiday Club, Flying Start Funding, and one of the lowest hourly rates in the area, mean that the charity is proud to be truly accessible to all. For more information about these sessions and all of the services provided by the charity, please see contact details on the advert opposite.

Happy Joints Yoga Class
When joint mobility diminishes, the range of motion is reduced resulting in us not being able to move about with ease and flexibility. This can lead to feelings of frustration, reduced confidence or even loss of independence. Everyday tasks can take longer to do, or are more difficult than they used to be, and may result in pain, inflammation or swelling to the joint area. Yoga practices are designed to soften and release tension from the ligaments, tendons and cartilage, thereby increasing the range of motion in the joints. Increased movement of the joints help with reducing swelling to the area, and can also assist with reducing pain and inflammation. Yoga also assists with improving the flow of synovial fluid, this fluid is essential in joint health as it is the natural lubricant. This class is suitable for people with limited joint mobility, the yoga practices are low impact to ensure that you are working towards improving your flexibility while remaining within your comfort level. Happy Joints Yoga Class will be running on Friday mornings 9.15am to 10.15am at the Well Being Centre, St Marys Street. Please note that we are on the 1st floor, therefore there will be stairs to negotiate.
Help to improve mobility of the joints, including recovery from strains, sprains and injuries. Assist with reducing inflammation, stiffness and fluid retention. Improve flexibility, agility and overall health to the joints.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Children across Wales recently campaigned against climate change. Groups of students gathered in towns across Brecon and Radnorshire to protest about global warming and its potential harmful effects on future generations. The UK has a proud record on the environment in recent years and is a global leader in reducing emissions. Just look at the changes every UK citizen has made over the past ten years when it comes to household basics like recycling. We are now a nation of recyclers and this is having a huge effect on the amount of waste we produce that used to end up in landfill and the oceans. In 2018, UK CO2 emissions fell for a record sixth consecutive year and emissions in the UK fell to the lowest level since 1888, outside years with strikes. This is a huge achievement when developing countries around the world are increasing their CO2 output and damaging the planet.

Ocean plastic has been another area where the West can be proud. The ten most polluted rivers in the world are responsible for 90% of the plastic in our oceans, not one of these rivers are in Europe, the vast majority are in Africa and Asia. We are making real progress in the UK at protecting our climate and I hope that schools and teachers are promoting this to our pupils and not scaring them with doomsday scenarios. If we really want to tackle climate change we must lead a global response in order to tackle this issue. Newss from
Kirsty Williams
There’s a good chance you’re reading this around the time your council tax bill for the new financial year has arrived. The record 9.5% increase passed in the latest Powys County Council budget means Powys has the highest levels of council tax in Wales relative to average incomes. The budget process was a difficult one for the Council - with the original proposals rejected - and ongoing financial constraints continue to dominate political decisions. There were some positives from the revised budget, including the decision to abandon plans to cut financial support for libraries, and the financial lifeline given to local arts and cultural organisations. With purse strings so tight the fight to maintain services can be difficult, and until we see a change in political direction it’s a fight that doesn’t look likely to go away. However, I know the importance of campaigning to protect the things people rely on and I will continue to do so. Mae’n bosib iawn eich bod yn darllen hwn tua’r amser y mae eich bil treth gyngor ar gyfer y flwyddyn ariannol newydd wedi cyrraedd. Mae’r cynnydd o 9.5% a gofnodwyd yng nghyllideb ddiweddaraf Cyngor Sir Powys yn golygu bod gan Bowys y lefelau uchaf o dreth gyngor yng Nghymru o’i chymharu ag incwm cyfartalog. Roedd y broses gyllidebol yn un anodd i’r Cyngor - gwrthodwyd y cynigion gwreiddiol - ac mae cyfyngiadau ariannol parhaus yn parhau’n flaenllaw wrth wneud penderfyniadau gwleidyddol. Daeth rhai canlyniadau cadarnhaol o’r gyllideb ddiwygiedig, gan gynnwys y penderfyniad i roi’r gorau i gynlluniau i dorri cymorth ariannol i lyfrgelloedd, a’r cymorth ariannol a roddir i sefydliadau celfyddydol a diwylliannol lleol. Gyda chyllid mor brin, gall y frwydr i gynnal gwasanaethau fod yn anodd, a than y gwelwn newid cyfeiriad gwleidyddol, mae’n frwydr nad yw’n edrych yn debygol o fynd i ffwrdd. Fodd bynnag, rwy’n gwybod pa mor bwysig yw ymgyrchu i ddiogelu’r pethau y mae pobl yn dibynnu arnynt a byddaf yn parhau i wneud hynny. Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth As the lambs start to appear in fields all around us, there is definitely a feeling of spring in the air. In our community too, I sense this fresh energy in several initiatives which are taking place locally. One of these is the proposed launch of a Talgarth and District Energy Cooperative, in partnership with the successful Green Valleys enterprise and backed by European Union Interreg funding. At a time when a step change is predicted in electricity powered vehicles, the major utility companies threaten to ratchet up energy costs and climate change is widely seen as an emergency, it has to make sense for communities to help secure our own energy needs. If, like me, you want to back this scheme and find out more, please contact the project officer, Jed Needs, by email to register your interest: jed@thegreenvalleys.org As a Trustee of PAVO, it is currently my privilege to be one of the judges in the forthcoming Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards. It is humbling to witness the range and depth of volunteering that takes place in our county, by ordinary people, who want to do their bit and enrich the lives of others. I am looking forward to visiting some of those individuals and organisations shortlisted in the coming weeks. Last year, the overall winner was the Hay Brecon Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) Group. And, while on the theme of those who run the extra mile for others, congratulations are due to our very own PC Geraint Skyrme, on being shortlisted for the Dyfed – Powys Police #WeCare Award 2019. It is a hugely deserved accolade – and I’m sure you will join me in wishing Geraint success in the final vote. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by email: President@welshlibdems.org.uk on facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue, which may be troubling you. Happy Easter, William.

Only Connect... P.F.S. BRECON Back in 2015 a group of individuals came together and decided that they would demonstrate an alternative response to the prevailing view widely touted in the media that Britain was hostile to those seeking asylum. They called themselves the Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees. Among the many support activities offered was the chance for refugees to experience a day out in the Brecon Beacons and surrounding areas. Here as they shared food and the company of friends and supporters, Eugene Fisk began to draw. He called them his ‘brief encounters.‘ Firm in the belief that the role of the portrait painter is to celebrate the individuality of people, he achieves this with subjects who come from places where terror, violence and death are for some a daily experience. Eugene Fisk was profoundly deaf. His subjects did not always speak good English. But as a colleague of his remarked, “There was something about the communication between him and the person that left the sitter with an affirmation of who they were.” Look carefully at the faces of the refugees drawn with such skill; the expressions, the eyes, the way the head is held, sometimes looking away from you, or holding you in a steady gaze, and I defy you to feel that you are not in the presence of both ordinary and yet truly remarkable people. Eugene died just a year ago. His legacy is this beautiful book with an inspiration within it that serves E.M Forster’s Only Connect quote well in that by not just exalting human love, it captures the very essence of what is humanity.
