Hello Happy New Year – welcome to our first issue of 2016.
The community magazine encouraging local residents to use what’s on their doorstep
To start off with some good news. Late 2014 we took on our first Apprentice, a local, young lady, Nicole Williams. Well I’m pleased to announce that Nicole has now cemented her place within the team and I was extremely chuffed to offer her a full time position, starting this month! Nicole will work primarily on the design and layout of the Local Beacon but will also be involved in other projects within Cariads Local Ltd. Well done to Nicole for all her hard work to date.

Now with some uncertain news. You may have already heard ‘’The Orchard Media and Events Group, the operator of the Brecon Jazz festival since 2012, has announced it is calling time on its running of the famous mid Wales event, based on financial considerations.” This is potential very bad news for businesses in and around Brecon. I have heard the Brecon Town Council have already had an emergency meeting, the local councillors are on it so to speak. So here’s hoping for positive news by our next issue. Last of all, if you didn’t receive a Local Landscapes 2016 Calendar, don’t panic. They will be on sale in local outlets until the end of January. For us it won’t be long until we are judging the 2017 entries! Oh how time goes when you’re having such fun … Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: Lisa Marie and Cariad Badham)
Competition: (Winner of December Competition: Jo Jones, Brecon)

We also produce a similar publication for the Talgarth and Hay on Wye area. It’s called Wye Local. Just like this magazine the aim is to support local businesses and services. The good news is, if you are unable to pick up your copy of the Wye Local in the local catchment area, you can view it on our website from the beginning of each month. Some of the many topics included in Wye Local, January issue: • Hay Theatre • Thoughts of a greengrocer • Plant of the month ... And much much more. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP As I am sure you are aware, recently the House of Commons voted on Britain taking military action against ISIL in Syria. Sending British troops into conflict is the most serious decision any Member of Parliament will ever face and it is not one that I took lightly. Memories of past conflicts are still fresh in this country’s mind. Afghanistan and Iraq have rightly given us all concerns about engaging in military combat in the middle-east and, in my view, rightly so.Yet we must not let these past experiences prevent us from ever engaging in military action when it is necessary to do so, but we must learn the lessons of past conflicts. To use Iraq and Afghanistan as a reason not to fight against terrorism is in my opinion the wrong course of action. To shy away from barbarity and radicalisation is to give in to murderous regimes, and suggests to them that there are no consequences for their heinous actions. These are not the principles that Britain stands for. Britain’s moral compass points to freedom and equality. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the civilised world in opposing those who try to destroy our freedom and destroy equality. That is why we were right to seriously consider taking action against ISIL. That said, I have three tests that must be passed before I vote to take action. First, is action required; second, is action legal and just; and third, have we learned the lessons of past conflicts to ensure that we do not repeat any mistakes from the past. The first test, I believe is the simplest to answer – yes, action is required. ISIL is a violent and barbaric death cult who murder and pillage their way across the Middle East, and they threaten our security here in Britain. Action must be taken to rid the world of this evil. The second test, is action legal and just, can also be answered. Action against ISIL is underscored by the unanimous adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2249, which states that ISIL “constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security” and calls for member states to take “all necessary measures” to prevent and suppress terrorist acts committed specifically by ISIL and, crucially, it says that we should “eradicate the safe haven they have established over significant parts of Iraq and Syria”. Third, have we learned the lessons of past conflicts. This point has been of great concern to many of my constituents. As I have already mentioned, the outcome of conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have caused concern for future military intervention in the Middle East.
However, I believe that we have learned a great many lessons from these conflicts. Indeed, the Prime Minister put into the motion the House voted on that we must “underline the importance of planning for post-conflict stabilisation and reconstruction in Syria”. I believe that this shows that the Government has learned the lessons of past conflicts and will ensure that we have an exit strategy and a strategy for stabilisation in the region. Therefore, my tests are passed – and it was with a heavy heart that I voted for the motion to send our planes into combat. It is never an easy decision to send our brave troops into combat but I do believe that we must act, and now is the time to do so. While I know this may come as a disappointment to some of you, I feel this decision is about the safety and security of our country, and indeed the wider world. We have a duty to act in that interest and this is why I voted for the motion in the House of Commons. If you would like to contact me on this or any other issue, contact 01982 559180 or e-mail chris.davies. mp@parliament.uk. I wish you all well for a merry Christmas and happy new year.

stands. The plot included an inn known as The Three Cocks, named after the heraldic crest of the Williams family of Gwernyfed (shown above). The lane leading to the inn was known as Three Cocks Lane.
Three Cocks Lane, Brecon The 1841 and 1851 censuses of Brecon town record the existence of a Three Cocks Lane off Wheat Street, in the area later occupied by St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. But why Three Cocks lane? The answer goes back to 1805 when the Catholics sold their holdings in Watergate (a site now occupied by Watergate Chapel) and acquired a plot of land extending from the corner of Wheat Street, where St Michael’s now
For almost fifty years, the Three Cocks served not only as an inn, but also as a chapel and a residence for the priest. Eventually, Brecon’s Catholics were able to build a proper church on the site of the Three Cocks Inn. A noted Catholic architect, Charles Hansom, was engaged for the purpose. The new church, built in the Gothic style at a cost of £1,000, was opened in 1851. As memories of the Three Cocks Inn faded, the former Three Cocks Lane became known by its present name: St Michael’s Street. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Brecon Foodbank Brecon Foodbank has now been operating for about 16 months and so far they have helped 358 people. The majority of their clients are single, aged 25 to 64 and unemployed. Benefit changes and delays continue to be common causes of crises, and together with low income, account for the cause of the crisis for the majority of their clients. Brecon Foodbank is not like a soup kitchen - They’re only open 2 days a week. They give people a balanced diet, for 3 days, of preserved food. These people mostly go to them through referral agencies such as Gwalia, housing or Age Cymru among others. Some just go in and can have an emergency food parcel from them or from some of our agencies who keep one.
Savings & Investment Planning • Retirement Planning • Protection Planning • Inheritance Tax Planning
Brecon Foodbank have very limited resources and therefore their aim is to help people in a short term crisis, in the hope that their agency will help them in the long run - be it with debt, illness or benefit problems. They do what they can to discourage dependency but they also don’t turn people away.
Tel: 01874 610707 Mobile: 07970692927 annie.daniel@sjpp.co.uk www.anniedanielfinancial.co.uk 8 Ship Street, Brecon.
Many think that there are set criteria for receiving a food parcel, but this is not really the case. Brecon Foodbank’s referral agencies usually know the person they give the voucher to and as long as they are convinced that the person is in need, they take their word for it. For example, it is not necessary to be in receipt of benefits to get a food parcel from them. Brecon Foodbank were offered the chance to move the warehouse, office and distribution centre to the St John’s Centre in Pendre as part of its development into a community centre with a focus on food and healthy eating and living. They moved in mid-October and are settling in. “Space is much more limited, but the environment is much more pleasant - and much warmer for the winter too!” They now open the distribution centre there for clients on Friday mornings from 11 to 1 as well as on Tuesday afternoons, 2.303.30; warehouse and office times remain unchanged on Tuesdays and are now from 10-1 on Fridays. Brecon Foodbank could still use more volunteers in the distribution centre at Pendre; if you could spare an hour or two to help, please email them for an application form or call in at the Family Centre while they are open on a Friday morning. You do not need to be available every week as we operate a rota system.

Sinfonia starts with strings Brecknock Sinfonia begins 2016 with a concert of music for strings. The orchestra’s outstanding string section will perform a range of works written over three centuries, some familiar, some hidden treasures awaiting discovery. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are represented by a concerto grosso by Handel, one of Vivaldi’s violin concertos and Purcell’s serene Chaconne. Puccini’s lyrical gem, Crisantemi, comes from the nineteenth-century romantic tradition and shows that the composer did not just write for operatic voices. Three more recent English composers give a pastoral flavour to the programme; a minuet from John Ireland’s Downland Suite and Gerald Finzi’s Romance are beautiful miniatures but the Serenade for Strings is Elgar at his best, with rolling melodies and a flavour of melancholy. Any hints of sadness will be swept away by Bela Bartok’s exuberant Romanian Folk Dances, a great favourite with orchestra and audiences alike. Brecknock Sinfonia performs four concerts a year in Brecon Cathedral and aims to bring the classical orchestral repertoire to the town. The orchestra’s players are mainly music professionals augmented by talented amateurs and are drawn from across South Wales and the Marches. The Friends of Brecknock Sinfonia support the orchestra’s work by fundraising through music-based social events. For the concert on Saturday January 23rd Michael Bell conducts and Laurence Kempton will lead the orchestra and perform as soloist.Tickets are available on the door at the cathedral, price £12, and children under 16 are free. Overcome, Conquer and Discover a new way of thinking, feeling and living.

Is the end in sight for buy-to-let? Chancellor George Osborne landed buy-to-let landlords another shock in his Autumn Statement by announcing a 3 per cent stamp duty surcharge on property purchases from 1 April 2016.

of tax – currently 20 per cent. Mortgage interest relief is estimated to cost the Government a hefty £6.3billion a year and is seen as a soft target for increasing tax revenues. The combination of the stamp duty hike, restriction on mortgage interest tax relief and the proposed removal of the 10 per cent “wear and tear” allowance will undoubtedly reduce the appeal of buy-to-let. With interest rate rises on the horizon many landlords where their profit margins are already tight may be forced to sell up or reduce the size of their portfolios. Maintaining local culture in our part of At Trallong Eisteddfod, which was held last Saturday in Sennybridge Primary School, the awards for competitors who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, have the most potential were won by Cadi Thomas of Cray and Rose Graham of Llangattock. Cadi won the Mrs. Mary Price trophy in the local section and Rose won the miniature chair made and given by Mr. Alec Tompkins in the open section. The children’s classes were well supported and the standard was very high. It was pleasing to have eight competitors in the recitation competition for primary school age children who live within an eight mile radius of Trallong. “Our thanks go to Mrs Gwyneth Williams and the teachers at Sennybridge school for preparing the children for the competitions, including the new competition for a recitation party.” The evening session was again outstanding. John Davies of Llandybie won the champion solo competition -this was the tenth time for John to win
this competition since 1989. Aberhonddu Male Voice choir won the choir competition and Sennybridge YFC won the hymn tune par ty competition. “We are very grateful to the conductors and choristers for their continued suppor t.” The adjudicators, who gave helpful advice and constructive criticism to every competitor were Mr. Aled Hopton of Cardiff, who adjudicated the musical items; Mrs Bronwen Morgan of Tregaron who adjudicated the recitation and senior literary items and Miss Bethan Price of Heol Senni who adjudicated the junior art and literature classes. The talented accompanists for the day were Miss Bethan Rees of Knighton and Mr. Gareth Wyn Thomas of Capel Hendre. Conductors Mrs. Mary Hodges of Llanfihangel-Nant-Bran, Mrs. Annette Thomas and Mrs Rhian Dillon (both of Brecon) and Mr. Hywel Phillips of Sennybridge ensured the smooth running of the event.

rt of Powys - Trallong Eisteddfod The President for the afternoon session was Miss Kathryn Price, headmistress of Sennybridge school. The evening President was our Member of Parliament, Mr. Chris Davies. Both gave thoughtprovoking addresses and generous donations. “Thanks are also due to Eirlys for preparing and serving refreshments throughout the day. We are also indebted to Gwyneth, Eiddwen, David, Gethin and Julie who acted as door stewards.” “Grateful thanks go to our loyal competitors and patrons who support us each year. At the end of the evening, Mrs. Marilyn Jones, chairman of the committee proposed an omnibus vote of thanks to everyone who had contributed in any way towards the success of this year’s eisteddfod.” Trallong Eisteddfod committee would also like to extend their thanks to their wonderful band of helpers who cook Welsh cakes over the Brecon Jazz weekend when the bulk of the money needed to run the eisteddfod is raised. “Without the money
raised in this way we would be unable to continue to stage this eisteddfod - so important in maintaining local culture in our part of Powys.” Winners in the various competitions were the following: Emrys Evans, Cadi Thomas, Caitlin Jones, Elan Mabbitt, Ioan Mabbitt, Carys Rees, Rose Graham, Eluned Coleman, Sophie Jones, Martha Powell, Poppy Jones, Sean Evans, Eva Lornie, Abi Davies, Glesni Powell, Isaac Powell, Teleri Haf Thomas, Anne Watkins, Glasnant Morgan, Aberhonddu Male Voice, John Davies, Gwladys Davies, John Davies & Jennifer Parry, Sennybridge YFC, David Price, Jennifer DrewParry, Andrew Jenkins, Mary B. Chris Davies MP supports Small Business Saturday On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Chris Davies MP showed his support for small local business by attending Small Business Saturday in the market town of Brecon. He joined with local businesses to encourage retailers to reinstate the Brecon Chamber of Trade, which will support local business owners in Brecon in their fight to save the High Street. Chris was accompanied by the regional Conservative Assembly candidate for Mid & West Wales, Aled Davies. Chris and Aled consulted with retailers about various issues that affect small businesses in Brecon & Radnorshire. Issues raised included parking charges, business rates and lack of regeneration within the town. All of these are contributing factors in the number of vacant shops in Brecon and need to be addressed by the National Park Authority, Powys County Council and the Welsh Government. Chris has pledged to work alongside shopkeepers and elected representatives in order to deal with the highlighted issues and build Brecon back up to the thriving community that it once was, and does indeed deserve to be.
Chris Davies MP with Martin Like, from Likeys (centre) and Aled Davies, Conservative Regional Assembly Candidate for Mid and West Wales (right).
Chris said: “It is always a pleasure for me to visit and support our excellent small businesses. Small Business Saturday is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the breadth of our small local businesses. I am proud to play my part in the event. However, after listening to small business owners in the town, there are major concerns over the way that Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, Powys County Council and the Welsh Government seem to portray an anti-business approach, and I will be doing all I can to support the people of Brecon in regenerating the High Street. I am also encouraged by the call for a reinstatement of the Brecon Chamber of Trade, and I wholeheartedly support this. I want to see our area continue to thrive and will do everything I can, both in and outside of Parliament, to promote our area and its wonderful small businesses.” For more information please contact James Evans on 01982 559180.

New Year – get crafty with the little ones: Make a Time Capsule! This is an idea which makes a super family project and tradition! Get the kids to make a “time capsule” for the year ahead, and fill it, together, as the year goes on - with photos, ticket stubs, copies of certificates won, birthday cards, writing samples, and anything else with meaning to your family. At the end of the year store it away safely and make a new time capsule for the year ahead. You will have a memory-filled container for each year which you will all treasure in the future.

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in January
It is a charming flower when examined closely in shape, colour and texture and nothing like a true Nettle flower. Indeed, a subspecies of the Common Nettle with no sting at all is not uncommon in Brecknock, clumps of which occur on the edge of several of our woodlands. Look in summer for tall plants with flowers, if at all, only near the top of the stem and distinctively-shaped leaves – but only test the lack of sting if you are sure! There will be a Winter Bird Watch at Llangors Lake starting at Ty Mawr Farm, Llangasty on Sunday 10th. £5 per adult. Children free. Numbers are limited and booking is essential by phone or email. 9.30am-12.30. Lamium album An overlooked flower that can be found at any time of year is White Dead-nettle. The picture was taken in mid-January. An old name for this was Adam-and-Evein-the-Bower, probably referring to the two black and gold stamens when the flower is viewed upside-down.
There will be work parties for woodland management at BWT Pwll-y-Wrach nature reserve, on the 12th and 19th. Then there is a chance to learn hedgelaying at BWT Trewalkin Meadow nature reserve, near Pengenffordd on the 26th. See bit.ly/bwtevents for more information. John Crellin

I cooked the fish for dinner my husband brought it here he had caught it up in Brecon with all his fishing gear. The rod, the reel, the hooks and bait a knapsack for his back waders, boots and other stuff a special sort of mac. The hat cost quite a bit as well and glasses for the sun he had really spent a fortune when all is said and done. And of course there is the licence and permit for the river when I think of what he is spending it makes my poor heart shiver. But I cooked the fish for dinner and my husband said to me isn`t it really wonderful to have this meal for FREE!!!!!!!!
