CHRIS DAVIES MP
News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Hello from Westminster! What a busy time we have had over the Christmas period and into the New Year. The spectre of local bank and school closures still looms large over us here in Brecon and Radnorshire. Over Christmas I met with local people to discuss the closure of the HSBC banks in Builth Wells and Rhayader, and would like to thank all of those who met with me and signed my letter to oppose the closures. I hope the bank will now review their decision and ensure that adequate provision is provided in our towns. On school closures, Powys County Council are threatening to close a number of local schools across our area. I will be fighting these plans as hard as I can but that is where I need your help. I believe that the reason Powys CC are so intent on closing the schools and slashing services is because of budget cuts being imposed upon them by the outrageous local government settlement handed down by the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. This settlement has been cut each year for a total of 10 years in a row in Powys. This is unacceptable. I, like you, have no vote to oppose the cuts as the settlement comes from the Welsh Assembly and does not fall under my remit. Therefore, in order to save our services I would encourage you to co-sign my letter to our local AMs in the Assembly and implore them to vote against the settlement until we get fair funding for Powys. For the last few years, our AMs have abstained from voting on the settlement handed down to us by the Assembly, so this year it is time to call for action. That is why I will be writing to them to ask them to stand up for the interests of the people of Brecon and Radnorshire and vote against this harmful settlement. And I want you to join me and co-sign my letter to show our AMs and the Assembly how much we support and rely upon our vital local services. If you would like to join my call to ‘save our services’ and co-sign my letter do get in touch with me at chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk or call 01982 559180 and add your name to my letter. You can see a copy of it on my website www.chrisdavies.org.uk. Working together, we can see action and get fair funding for our area. I hope you join my call to ‘save our services’.
I hold regular Advice Surgeries throughout the constituency. If you would like to make an appointment, my contact details are below:

The Wellington Statue The Wellington Hotel is in a building which was erected in the mid to late 18th century as a private residence. It was not described as a hotel until 1850s. British soldier and statesman Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was born in 1769. He became one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century. After defeating Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo in 1815 he became a national hero. Every Tuesday at 6.30pm

Following the death of the Duke of Wellington in 1852, buildings, streets and pubs were named after him. The statue in Brecon, in the centre of the square in front of the Hotel, is by local sculptor John Evan Thomas (18101873) and is said to be a “very true likeness”. It was officially inaugurated in 1856, and it was at this time that the Wellington Hotel was so named. Also named in Wellington’s memory is Wellington Place, on the corner of Rhosferig and Belle Vue Road. However, there is no evidence that the Duke of Wellington ever visited Brecon! www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Caledonian Market Raises ÂŁ10,000 A highly successful event organised by members of the Rotary Club of Brecon raised over ÂŁ10,000 for the fourth successive year from the sale of donated items collected from various individuals in the Brecon and surrounding area. This much anticipated annual market event is now very much part of the social calendar for Brecon having run since 1977. All proceeds raised go towards supporting local and international needs of individuals and organisations. In the past years Rotary has supported Young Carers, Dementia, Stroke Unit and Trallong Eisteddfod. Rotary supports Youth Development by organising Young Chef and Young Musician competitions and by sponsoring Youth Leadership courses. Rotary is also an international organisation and support is given to Water Aid and Shelter Boxes for Relief Aid amongst other appeals. Mike Evans, President of Brecon Rotary thanks everyone for generously supporting this major fund raiser which will be repeated on 5th November this year, so make a note in your diary.

New Eye Service in Brecon!
From April 2016 patients needing treatment for wet AMD will be able to receive it in Brecon hospital, saving them from having to travel out of the county for treatment. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that affects a tiny part of the retina at the back of the eye, which is called the macula. AMD causes problems with central vision, but does not lead to total loss of sight and is not painful. There are two types of AMD – wet and dry. Although there is no cure for AMD, it is possible to stop Wet AMD from getting worse by giving a series of injections into the eye. Unfortunately there is currently no treatment for dry AMD. Alan Lawrie, Director for Primary and Community Care for Powys Teaching Health Board, explained “At the moment, patients in the south of Powys have to travel to Hereford Hospital for their treatment. This can be really unsettling for patients as part of the treatment for wet AMD involves giving eye drops that make their vision very blurry for a few hours. By treating people closer to home they can return to a familiar environment more quickly.” Powys Teaching Health Board has taken a number of steps to bring new services into Powys and continues to strive to provide as much care either in peoples homes or as close to home as possible. 65 Years Experience in the Building Trade

We are a family orientated community club. During the past 12 months we have been developing a racing section which trains on the Brecon Canal from our base the Sports Association Fields. We have been focussed mainly on our U12’s ‘Lightings’ kayak squad, but are developing Youth and Adult squads. We also have an interest in paddle-ability which is a racing division for people with disabilities.
In addition to our racing section which caters for Sprint, Marathon, Paddle-ability (disability) and Lightnings (U12’s). Please get in contact if you are interested in joining us for any of these activities.
This year we are introducing a new project ‘Laidback Launchers’ this was inspired by the numerous locals showing an interest in going for a relaxed paddle. I frequently enjoy the kingfishers flashing across my view during training sessions. Observing the changes of colour and the light through the seasons is a constant source of inspiration. We will be starting out leisurely cruises on Friday mornings at 9.30am from the 19th of February. No previous experience is required we have experienced coaches and stable boats, with buoyancy aids provided. The sessions should last around an hour, and are a relaxed cruise while getting a bit of fresh air and enjoying slowly building up your health without even noticing! Booking is essential! For more details or to book please Overcome, Conquer and Discover a new way of thinking, feeling and living.

Don’t get bitten by the dogs! In investment terms a dog is a fund that consistently under-performs.To be named and shamed as a “dog fund” returns must be consistently 10pc below the respective benchmark. Many of these “dog funds” are household names and are found within personal pensions, stocks and shares ISAs and other investments. Investors are paying £400m annually in fees to the managers of these “dog funds” in return for lacklustre performance. The top ten worst performing dogs have an average of 1.75pc in annual management charges which only helps to compound the problem. The very worst performers are often quite specialist, but dog funds also include some of the big names. In the Balanced Managed sector, for example, the top fund has returned 64.91% over the last 5 years. The dogs in this sector which include Barclays Growth Portfolio, Henderson Multi Manager Managed and Scottish Friendly Managed have returned –13.83%, –15.77% and -21.05% respectively.

Many of these dogs are wrapped up in investments previously sold by the high-street banks. If not reviewed regularly the overall impact on portfolio performance can be quite shocking. The banks and dog fund managers will blame the prevailing market conditions but it might be fairer to blame excessive charges and poor management. For the start of the New Year it may be worth checking whether your investment and pension portfolios contain any dogs. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Want to start Gardening?
Gardening Courses Plough Chapel, Brecon
David Burridge was born in 1951 and has been involved with gardens, gardening and environmental issues for most of his life. He has spent many years growing his own fruit and vegetables using organic methods and has also grown commercially on a larger scale to supply a local “Vegetable box scheme” in Brecon that he started in 1999. Along with growing vegetables and fruit he has also run his own business as a garden designer and landscaper for over 20 years and along with many other projects, has restored three derelict Victorian walled gardens. He has also been teaching gardening, garden design and landscaping skills for the last sixteen years and gained a further education teaching qualification in 2006. He has worked as a lecturer for a number of colleges in Wales and was employed as a consultant by The National Botanic Gardens of Wales to write and deliver much of the course programme for the “Growing the Future” project run by the Botanic Gardens. He is also active in environmental conservation and in developing ways to live more sustainably and in harmony with the natural world. After an absence of 11 years spent restoring and developing a Victorian walled garden near Newbridge-on-Wye, David thought that the time might be right to start running gardening courses in Brecon again. The course programme planned is comprehensive and will suit anybody interested in growing their own vegetables and fruit organically or in designing their own or other people’s gardens. The courses on organic gardening cover everything a grower needs to know from the importance of soil and plant nutrients to a month by month guide to what to grow and pest and disease control. Also covered will be a separate day course on growing in a greenhouse or polytunnel, how to manage growing and extending the season. The garden design course looks into all aspects of the design process including site assessment, measuring and plan drawing, hard landscaping features and plant choice. The courses are suitable for anyone who is just starting out to those who might have more experience but would like to push their understanding further.

Get to really know... Lynda Like
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Petra or Iguazu falls.
Job role within this magazine? Selling advertising space in the Local Beacon, Cariads Family Magazine and the Brecon Fringe Guide. Start date? February 2014. What was your favourite childhood television programme? White Horses & Wacky Races. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A dolphin because they are beautiful very sensitive and have caring natures. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To bring peace and harmony to the world. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Oh good grief is it that time already?! What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Ahh the end of another fab day... Two lessons life has taught you? There are always two sides to a story and just because someone is unpleasant, stupid or just plain horrid, they may have just got out of the wrong side of bed so give them a second chance just incase. What makes you grumpy? Normally people who are rude and unpleasant, but at the moment this constant rain is not bringing a smile to my face. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I would love to be able to take time of work to walk Offas Dyke, walk the Tour of Mount Blanc and The Coast to Coast as well as the Welsh Coast to Coast walk - to name a few of the walks I would love to do. But if it happened immediately, it would have to be a trip to somewhere sunny to do a long warm walk. What book would you recommend to others? The Alchemist By Paul Coelho and Reach for the Sky by Douglas Bader. Both read years ago and I still remember them well. Best present ever received? To spend a day with Howie Hedgehogs, which I had this Christmas and cannot wait to use it in the Spring. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Lengthen my legs.
List five goals on your life’s todo list: 1. Have more time in my garden. 2.To walk Tour de Mount Blanc. 3. Spend a weekend cycling through the tulip fields of Holland. 4. Run 5 miles and still be able to talk at the end. 5. Have more time to do some willow work or other crafts. Name one regret you have: Not joining a singing group. I still could do that one day. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Being able to just go out for a ride with friends and not have to think about anyone or anything else. Name one thing you love about being an adult: You can do what you want to do, and you don’t have to ask for a lift home. What’s your favourite song of all time? Too many to have one, it depends on my mood at that moment anything by Meatloaf, Journey, Air Supply, Abba, and the list could go on, but something I can sing along to or rather belt along to, as apparently I don’t have a singing voice when at full throttle!! What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Supper with a few good friends at home with good food, wine and company - perfect. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Out in the garden or going for a long walk with my husband, dog and friends. What would be your dream job? Now that is a difficult one! I think I should say I have it working on the Local Beacon, but if I did not do that I would love to be a gardener. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Had a lovely conversation with one of our advertises and between us we put the world to right. Sadly she had to go to deal with a customer so we had to end our discussions. Sum yourself up in five words: Optimistic, thoughtful, loyal, trustworthy and usually very organised (although that seems to have gone to pot in the last few months). What would you like to see in a future issue of this magazine? More Talent showing off in the Magazine and more villages highlighted.

Local Talent: Ben Draper - Upper Sixth - Christ College Is there a piece of art you are most proud of? Why? The piece of art I am most proud of is a piece inspired by the works of an artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) this piece was created by painting a background of orange onto some black card, then using a quill and ink to draw on the design and the background. Next I added some coloured chalk, and some acrylic paint to give the piece some expression and variety of colour. Finally I drew back into the image with ink. I am most proud of this piece because I think this is a piece which defines my artistic style: rough, quick line work and exaggerated perspective. From this idea were inspired many more, and this is to be the initial design of my final piece, using the technique. What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can’t live without in the art studio? Although it sounds a bit cliché, my best and most useful artist tool is my pencil. Initial line work is the beginning of every piece, and beautiful works of art can be created with this simple combination of wood and graphite. Pencil work is the way I have started my artistic journey, and to this day it is my favourite and most used medium. How did you start making art? / Why do you make art? I first began taking real interest in art when I came to Christ College, and I learned how to draw simple things like people and buildings. Clearly back then these things weren’t as simple, and it took a bit of time to develop my work, but I found something therapeutic in the subject. As if the worry about exams, or results, or homework could be eased by my pencil and sketchbook. And as for why I do it? I’m not sure I could really answer that in this article, as my explanation would take too long, but the main reason is the fact that I can do anything with it. As long as I can think of it, I can express it in a drawing or a painting. Much like a writer can write about any inspiration comes his way, I can at least try to draw it. Do you do it in your spare time as well as for school? Drawing, or rather sketching, is my main hobby, and I find myself spending hours during the day scribbling my ideas onto a page. I take a sketchbook with me wherever I go,
and I will draw what I see, whether it be at a coffee shop, a theatre production, or just walking out and about in town. This school year alone I have gone through around ten sketchbooks, from just jotting down my ideas, attending life drawing classes, and drawing what I see. Also I spend many hours on a weekend exploring the Brecon Beacons with my camera. I find photography equally inspiring, and I love walking through the hills taking photos of whatever I can find, and then editing them on my laptop. Sometimes I even prefer the click of a camera taking a photo than a pencil on paper, and I take my inspiration and put it into both of these mediums. How would you describe your style/type of art? I would describe my personal style of art as “sketchy”. I prefer a fast paced, stylised painting to an ultra-realistic one, which I feel is why I have been inspired by the works of Giacometti. This is what I aim for in my painting, printing and drawing. I would also describe my style of art as very figurative, focusing on the structure and form of the figure using mainly the build-up of rough lines rather than fancy shading techniques. What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life? What are your future plans? Plans after school / Sixth Form? Will you continue down the artistic route? Last term, with the support and advice of the art department and career staff, I prepared and sent my application and portfolio to several art colleges. I have recently been accepted into Bournemouth University’s Computer Animation Arts with an unconditional offer. This being my first choice of university, as it is one of the best animation courses in the world, as you would imagine I was most excited about the opportunity, and I took it. There I will be focusing on the artistic aspects of animation: like the design, conceptualisation, and creation of a character and an animated piece. Basically, I’ll be making the things that are animated look good. What got you interested in art? Why did you choose to take it as a GCSE/A Level subject? I’m not quite sure what got me interested in the subject, and made me want to continue the theme throughout my life, however I only remember waking up one morning and deciding I wanted to apply for an animation course, and I could barely draw. So after a lot of hours spent with a pencil and sketchpad, and a lot of help from my teachers, I was finally ready to get the place on the course I wanted, which I did. I think this learning, and seeing my development from where I was then to where I am now, got me really interested

ge
in the subject. Also, as I previously mentioned, the therapeutic side of the subject aided my interest as well. I was able to get back from a long day at school, and relax with a few hours with my sketchbook. But again, I am not 100% sure what made me think of doing it as a career. Do you have a favourite artist? If yes, what draws you to that person’s work? Due to my recent work on Alberto Giacometti, I feel that he is probably my favourite artist to date. I think that his paintings and drawings capture the mood and character of the model, and he creates a real sense of atmosphere within the picture, even by only painting in a very simple background. What in your opinion, is the hardest step in creating a final piece? For me personally (again a little cliché) I find starting the piece is probably the hardest part about creating a final piece. Deciding how to compose the image, what medium to do it in, what style or feel you want to give. All these things must be thought about even before putting paint to paper, and I feel like the weight of all this on the artists shoulder’s is probably the hardest part about creating a piece. When you’re not in the art studio, where do you do your work in your own time? Why that place? I work on my art class work generally in my room or at any desk I can where I am able to get it out and work on my pieces. Usually for this I will find somewhere quiet too, as to not have any distractions due to the seriousness and professionality my classwork must keep. However as I said for my own personal portfolio of sketches, I will do it wherever I have a small amount of time even to create a vague sketch of something. What’s the process you go through to get to a final piece? The first thing I do is to research some ideas. Find some kind of inspiration and then create some initial QUICK sketches of my ideas. With each sketch I would change the composition, the perspective, the lighting and so on. Once I have an idea that I am happy with I would create a tester piece, where I would add colour if it were to be a coloured piece, but if not I would try it in the medium that I wished to complete it in. I would then resolve this into final piece.

Kayak champion in the making!
Non Dingle is a 16-year-old Canoe Slalom competitor. Peter Mayall from PSM Outdoors first met and coached Non and her family at the local canoe club on the River Wye at Glasbury. Non was a very enthusiastic youngster and soon became a skilled paddler on white water. With her family’s encouragement and support, her dad Rob ferried Non and her kayak to training sessions and competitions around the country. Peter has followed Non’s progress through the sport and has been excited to be able to assist her by providing some top quality gear from Palm Equipment to help her progress. Peter says: ‘I am so pleased to have introduced Non to Paddlesports and wish her well for the 2016 season – GO NON!’ The Paddler’s Perspective Last year I was selected for the junior Great Britain team. I was ecstatic after my hard winter training paid off and I was the 3rd C1 women’s boat selected to race at the Junior Europeans. In June I headed out to Europe with the Welsh team for an unforgettable road trip. I trained and raced at many different sites including Bratislava, coming 4th U16 in the Young Danubia Cup, and Ivrea in Italy; one of the most respected courses in the world, where I came 4th in my first senior world ranking. I travelled out to Kraków, Poland, with the GB team in August to race at the junior Europeans. I had some awesome days training followed up by my biggest race yet! I came 23rd in my singles category and with my two team mates from Scotland we placed 7th in the team race. Thanks to PSM Outdoors for some great new kit over the year which has seen me through freezing mornings and hot days and helped make 2015 the best year so far. I am now training the the Welsh team in preparation for what I hope will be another great year full of paddling!

But an old Somerset name does reference the flowers – “Yellow Stars”. Other old names suggest smoking as in “Poor Man’s Baccy” and the plant was, indeed, once used as a source of herbal tobacco. It has also been used as a cough remedy and, in the days before matches, the down from the young leaves was treated with saltpetre, dried and transformed into easy-to-light tinder. Look out for the flowers near the river shores of the Usk and Wye and other damp stony places. Tussilago farfara “Coltsfoot” is one of those wild flowers with a wide variety of common names, many of which include “foot”, apparently from the leaves which will not be seen until later in the spring, whereas the flowers will be emerging now. Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) A boy asks his father, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “That’s disgusting. Don’t talk about things like that over dinner,” the dad replies. After dinner the father asks, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy says. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.” One day Jimmy got home early from school and his mom asked, “Why are you home so early?” He answered, “Because I was the only one that answered a question in my class.” She said,“Wow, my son is a genius. What was the question?” Jimmy replied, “The question was ‘Who threw the trash can at the principal’s head?’”

Chamber of Trade - Brecon The recent call for the reinstatement of the Brecon Chamber of Trade has been very well received and, so far, over 35 businesses have expressed an interest in joining. This is an impressive number and it shows that a Chamber of Trade is much needed here in Brecon. Andrew RT Davies AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, who came to a meeting with the traders in The Clarence Inn on Monday, January 18, said: “It was fantastic to discuss issues impacting upon so many Mid Wales businesses at this packed Brecon Chamber of Trade meeting.” “From concerns over business rate support, to parking charges and fears over a growing number of empty premises; it is clear businesses have been denied sufficient support from a tired Welsh Labour Government, that has simply run out of ideas.” “Businesses in the Brecon area deserve more support from their local Assembly Member; and Welsh Conservatives, by cutting business rates for small businesses, reviving our High Streets and opposing unfair funding cuts for rural Wales, are ready to offer that support.” Sarah Lewis, who works in Chris Davies’ constituency office in Brecon, is in the process of setting up a meeting with David Meredith, the Mayor of Brecon, and representatives of BBNPA and Powys County Council, at which the traders can voice their concerns about everything that is affecting their businesses. Kitchen tips that’ll save you a fortune: descale your kettle with a lemon... Banish cooking odours Is there a smell of fish, curry or something you’ve burnt? You can banish unwanted cooking smells from the kitchen by boiling a cup of distilled white vinegar and a couple of cloves in an uncovered saucepan for a few minutes. Get your saucepans sparkling Remove burnt-on stains from pans with cheap ownbrand cola. Pour just enough into your pan to cover the burnt area. Boil, stir, then remove from the heat. Pour away the hot cola and the burnt residue should go with it. Finish off with a rinse and a quick wipe with a clean cloth. Descale a kettle Cut a lemon into large chunks and place in your kettle. Fill the kettle with water, allow to boil, and then leave the lemon and water mixture to stand overnight. Discard the fruit and water the next day and rinse thoroughly before using your limescale-free kettle to make a cup of tea.
Clean a microwave Place a cup of boiling water mixed with half a cup of lemon juice in a bowl in your microwave and ‘cook’ on high for 30 seconds. Remove the bowl carefully and wipe the inside of the microwave with a clean, damp cloth. All food deposits should come away easily. Freshen a smelly fridge Halve a lemon and scoop out the flesh. Fill your empty lemon shell with salt and pop it in a back corner of the fridge for a cheap but effective natural deodoriser. Unblock a sink... Cut a tennis ball in half. Put one half over the plug hole, dome up, and give it a good pump. The ball will act like a plunger. More tips to follow in a future issue … Copy d ate: 14th o each mo f nth
