Newssfrom

Kirsty Williams One of the issues that comes up most frequently in my office postbag and at constituency surgeries is broadband. We are living in the digital age. People and businesses need access to high quality broadband for a huge number of reasons. Banks are closing their branches saying we can use their services online, agricultural forms must be submitted digitally, some prescriptions need to be renewed online and our children are told to research their homework on the internet; to name but a few. So it is absolutely vital that rural areas have the same access to fast, consistent, reliable broadband as urban areas. Yet, sadly, this is often not the case. I have previously been highly critical of the speed of the roll-out of Superfast Cymru. I will continue to push BT to make that roll-out quicker and with far clearer information to residents about when they can expect to be connected. For those really struggling with low speeds you may be able to get help via the Welsh Government’s “Access Broadband Cymru scheme”. This scheme provides grants of up to £800 to fund (or part-fund) the installation costs of new broadband connections for homes and businesses across Wales.

ASHBROOK BENCHES MADE TO ORDER

I will be holding a meeting in the constituency with the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, at the end of September. I want residents to come along to share their experiences and to explain to the Cabinet Secretary the impact poor broadband has on the lives of people in rural areas. If you would like to come along to that meeting, please get in touch with my office for more details. You can contact me on 01874 625699 or if your internet allows, send an email to: Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

New in Town

Name of the business? Daisy Birthing Brecon. Where are you based or area you work in? Bishop Bevan Hall in Brecon town centre. (A new class will be starting in Alana’s Baby Corner shop, Hay-onWye on September 13th). Why Brecon? There is very little provision of Antenatal care and education for pregnant women in Brecon and the surrounding area, and so I wanted to offer this much needed service. Why did you decide to open this shop/business? And what type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? When I was pregnant with my daughter I suffered from anxiety (about pregnancy and labour), nausea, chronic indigestion and a number of other ailments. I lived in Cardiff at the time and a friend suggested I try Daisy Birthing classes to help. After the first class I already felt more relaxed and confident about my body’s ability to grow a baby and give birth; and over the subsequent weeks I learned exercises to reduce the nausea and indigestion, and relieve tension in my whole body and mind. When it was time for my baby to be born, I had learned so much about the amazing process of pregnancy and birth, that I was able to completely trust my body’s natural instincts and labour without fear, resulting in a very positive, relaxed and happy experience that I will never forget. When I moved to Brecon, I trained with The Daisy Foundation to pass on the knowledge that had helped me so much. What are some of challenges you encountered? Finding venues to teach in, and more importantly reaching pregnant women to let them know about my classes! What do you wish you had known before you started? What good value for money and reach the Local Beacon is/has to help spread the word, and how effective word of mouth advertising can be. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes and it is both scary and exciting knowing that making Daisy Birthing successful is all down to me! Describe a typical day in your business: Day to day I respond to queries about the classes, explaining what they entail, how much they cost and how to book on the course; I also post on social media to continue spreading

the word-of-mouth. On the day of a class I check my register and class notes are up to date, get to the hall half an hour early to set up the yoga mats and create a calming environment for all the mums-to-be and then welcome them as they arrive. The class consists of gentle yoga based exercises & breathing techniques to relieve pregnancy related ailments and to help make labour more effective, comfortable and hopefully a happy, positive experience. We also cover all aspects of antenatal education; so whether a woman has a natural drug-free birth, or requires medical interventions, or elects to have a c-section, Daisy Birthing prepares them to be confident during their labour. Finally, we end with a relaxation session; the part of class everybody seems to enjoy the most, where they can just lie back, relax and listen to some calming music and positive affirmations. After the class ends I pack up and go home happy, knowing that I am helping women with one of the most important journeys in their lives, becoming a mum. And it is always amazing to hear about their babies being born and being told that Daisy Birthing helped. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Talk to other pre-existing businesses! Every shop, cafe, yoga studio I have approached in Brecon has been so supportive, allowing me to leave leaflets or offering to spread the word. We live in a wonderful community and I am so happy that Daisy Birthing is now a part of it. How do pregnant women find out more? Email me: jo-lane@thedaisyfoundation.com Or find me online: www.thedaisyfoundation.com/antenatal-classes-inherefordshire-and-wales-with-jo-lane/ Or visit my facebook page: www.facebook.com/DaisyBirthingBrecon

Orchestra Remembers Somme Generation... Brecknock Sinfonia’s new season of concerts begins with a commemoration of George Butterworth, who was killed on the Somme in 1916. His lovely rhapsody on English folk tunes, ’Banks of Green Willow’, had helped to establish his reputation before he volunteered to serve in 1914. He won the Military Cross before he was killed by a sniper when leading his men into action. His mentor, Vaughan Williams, is also represented by one of his most popular pieces, ‘Dives and Lazarus’, a set of variations on the Tudor melody of that name for string orchestra and harp. The second half of the concert focuses on two of Mendelssohn’s most loved pieces. The ‘Hebrides Overture’, often known by the place which inspired it, Fingal’s Cave, and his fourth symphony, the ‘Italian’, both paint vivid pictures of the composer’s travels. The urbane Mendelssohn enjoyed neither the rolling Atlantic waves nor the hardships of Mediterranean rustic life, but he captured the atmosphere of both with his seemingly effortless talent for melody and musical colour. The concert begins with Beethoven’s stirring overture ‘The Creatures of Prometheus’.

Massive blow to millions of Santander 123 customers...

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

Santander is plotting to slash the interest rate on Britain’s most popular current account - in a blow to millions of its customers. The bank is in talks to cut the headline interest rate on its 123 Current account from 3 per cent to 2 per cent.The move could cost customers as much as £200 a year. Currently, customers earn 1 per cent on balances up to £1,000, 2 per cent up to £3,000 and 3 per cent if they have between £3,000 and £20,000. By contrast, the average savings account pays just 0.3 per cent. If Santander trims rates in the next few months it will come after the Bank of England recently cut the base rate to 0.25 per cent, making it harder for savers to source alternatives. It would also represent the second setback in seven months for those lured into the top-paying 123 deal, which also offers cashback of up to 3 per cent on household bills. In January, Santander hiked the account’s monthly fee from £2 a month to £5. The 123 current account has proven a big hit with customers since it was launched in 2012. Official figures show that in the past two years Santander has pulled in 371,125 more customers than it has lost - most of whom will have signed up for the bank’s 123 deal. At least 3.8million people are thought to use the account. It will be interesting to see whether a cut to the headline interest rate will affect the account’s popularity or whether the alternative savings options still provide a deterrent to switching.

Caledonian Market No it is not Scottish! The name Caledonian comes from the Islington Cattle and General Market established in 1855, which closed at the end of World War II in 1945. It was especially noted for miscellaneous secondhand goods, and was much frequented by bargain hunters. This is a pretty good description of what will happen on the 5th November in the Market Hall, star ting at 11am. (Admission £1). By going there on this date, you can see why Brecon has a market with that title. It is run by the Rotary Club of Brecon. When it was started well over 30 years ago, the Caledonian Market was a small scale affair and yielded £1282 for charity. Last year, it raised nearly £11000 for charity, and it was a matter of all Rotarian hands and their friends on deck, with the weeks preceding the event being the time when all manner of saleable items were

collected from donors from all over the locality. This year, there is one telephone number to ring for collection arrangements to be settled, and apart from beds, large scale furniture and old TVs, videos and tapes, anything else which might have a sale value, however small, is acceptable. The last day for collections to be made will be Wednesday 2nd November. The telephone number to use is 01874 623556.

“ The best opportunity to dispose of useable but unwanted items” People say that Brecon’s Caledonian Market is the best opportunity to dispose of useable but unwanted items, and pick up at a pittance something that you wanted but they didn’t!

Roof Appeal

I am sure that everyone will be aware of the recent fundraising efforts carried out by St Mary’s Church Brecon for the Roof Repair Appeal. The repair work includes the replacement of roof timbers, improvements to the North and South access doors and heritage interpretation. For this reason construction works will occupy the whole of the internal area of the church. Sadly the decision had to be taken to suspend trading of the Tower Cafe for the duration of the contract. All at St Mary’s Church would like to thank everyone for their generosity and support for the Roof Appeal and the grant bodies listed below which provided significant funding towards the total project costs:

• Allchurches Trust Limited; • Brecon Beacons National Park Sustainable Development Fund; • James Pantyfedwen Foundation; • Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme; • Community Foundation in Wales

• Heritage Lottery Fund;

• Audrey Tyler Trust

• Cadw;

“We would like to thank the staff for all their hard work and commitment to the Tower Café project which has been running for the last six years and also to our many customers who have supported us over the years.” - Liz Jones, St Marys Church Brecon.

Autumn Beekeeping

The beekeeping year doesn’t start in the spring and end in the autumn. Honey bee colonies live through the winter, so in autumn, beekeepers take care to ensure they will overwinter well, with enough young worker bees, and a healthy queen. They’ll also need enough stores of honey and pollen to last until spring. While still keeping an eye on hives during the winter, for the beekeeper this is the time for hive building and repair, perhaps making candles and mead, and of course reading, learning, making plans for the following year. If you’re considering beekeeping, join our autumn beginners’ evening course for a great head start, before meeting the bees at our apiary in the spring.

Wild in September

and has got into local territory at Ystradfawr Nature Reserve and the area around there (it likes old mine spoil heaps). It can make a great show there. Edward Lhwyd first reported it in Monmouthshire in 1696 on the Rhymney river. It comes from North America where it grows in “damp and dismal ground” according to Geoffrey Grigson. It has been called “Live Long” or “Lady-never-fade” as it has a reputation for staying fresh after being picked.

Anaphalis Margaritacea Pearly Everlasting (Edafeddog hirhoedlog in Welsh) or Anaphalis margaritacea is not one of our native plants but it has made a home for itself in the Valleys

There is a rich programme this month for volunteers who want to cut hay, survey Marsh Fritillary habitat or even help fell trees. On the 27th a Woodland Fungi guided walk in Cwmgiedd Forest near Ystradgynlais will be a splendid opportunity to explore a new area to most of us. History of the Brecon Beacons National Park Prehistoric beginnings The Brecon Beacons National Park was established in 1957. It was one of the first ten national parks to be created in Britain. The intention was to safeguard our beautiful, rough and dramatic landscapes, considered a priceless national asset. Like much of Wales, our landscapes are truly ancient, shaped by the Ice Age. The iconic northern scarp was deeply incised by glaciers and Llyn Cwm Llwch, a Geological Conservation Review Site, is the best preserved glacial lake in South Wales. There are also some well preserved glacial screes and moraines. A number of old quarry sites along the northern flanks of the Beacons contain fossil ferns. Nearly eight millennia of human activity have also moulded our landscapes. There are traces of early inhabitants in the remains of prehistoric stone circles and burial chambers, Iron Age hillforts and Roman

camps, particularly in the hills in the west of the park. One of our churches, St Catwg’s, Llangattock, founded in the 6th century, is considered one of the oldest in Britain, although it has been largely rebuilt over the years – its relatively recent additions include a 14th century nave, 16th century tower and two incredibly old yew trees. During the Norman conquest, the hills were peppered with castles. The ruins of Carreg Cennen are probably the best known remaining fortifications. Llanthony Priory was founded around 1100, and medieval farmhouses followed. Land which wasn’t used by the Norman barons was used by villagers as a source of firewood, turf, peat and gravel, and as grazing for sheep, cattle and pigs. Turn to page 48 for how you can purchase a copy of the 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar. Photo: March 2017 image. Karl McCarthy - Llanthony Priory

REVIEW

Wonderful and extremely tasty!

Almost a year ago Roberto’s Italian restaurant became daytime cafe, Casa. Located on St Mary’s Street close to the bakery, the cafe is run by Alina O’Connor, and focuses on fresh, healthy food, using local produce. The menu is broad and varied with options including cooked breakfasts, bagels, wraps, pizzas and salads, and certainly seemed to have something for everyone. They are happy to cater for all dietary requirements, and all their sandwiches can be made on gluten free bread. Inside the cafe is light and bright with soft music playing. It was pleasantly busy which gave it a nice, relaxed atmosphere.There is outside seating in their courtyard but it was a bit breezy so we opted to stay indoors. My friend Sarah and I settled down for a leisurely, late lunch. We chose a cold drink, of which there was a nice selection, including locally pressed apple juice, and ordered our food. Everything is cooked fresh and to order so there is a short wait, which we took advantage of to have a good gossip! Our lunches arrived and were presented beautifully on wooden boards. It had been hard to choose, and we very nearly went for flatbread pizzas, but in the end Sarah ordered a wrap with roasted vegetables, cheese, salad and hummus and I had the green pesto

chicken sandwich, which was served with crisps and homemade coleslaw. Both meals were wonderful and extremely tasty. We were pretty full, but determined to do a thorough review for Local Beacon readers and so ordered tea and cake from a selection which are all homemade.We both opted for English Breakfast tea, served in a gorgeous see-through teapot, but there is a huge choice of Teapigs tea available as well as Lavazza coffee. The chocolate and raspberry cake we had was light and moist and the Snickers brownie was served warm with vanilla ice cream and was dangerously good! We couldn’t manage all the chocolate and raspberry cake so, being the generous mother that I am, I asked for it to be packaged up and took it home for my boys, who all proclaimed it 10 out of 10! Casa’s kitchen closes at 3pm, although tea, coffee and cakes are still served until 4. At about quarter past 3 a couple came in fancying a bite to eat and were very disappointed to discover the kitchen was closed, however Alina went out of her way to make them the most delicious looking sandwiches. You don’t get that sort of service from a high street coffee chain! For more information see their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/robertositalianbrecon Article written by Laura Williams
