Fancy donating to a fantastic cause? And feeling good about having a good clear out? Brecon Rotary Club can collect all manner of furniture, toys, books, clothes, china, etc which then goes on sale at the Caledonian Market next month. See inside and back cover for more detailed information. Lastly I’d like to congratulate the local community for their sheer determination behind the local high school campaigns. We’ve done it. We’ve secured the future of Brecon and Gwernyfed High School (for the time being at least). We spoke as one voice and this voice was listened to. Read more on page 7 from Brecon High School Headteacher, Rob Broadbridge where he does mention “there is more work to do”. Bravo to all. Enjoy,

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Schools. The word on everyone’s lips in our area is Schools – and rightfully so. Powys’ decision to consult on these closures seemed to me to be the wrong way of looking at service provision in our area. Rather than looking at how to save money, the Council should have been looking more at how to ensure that we, the people of Brecon and Radnorshire, get the best quality of services for the best value for money. It was clear to me and many others that closing our superb local schools was not the best value for money for education services in our area. With such talented teachers and fantastic facilities, closing the schools completely would have been a great loss to our local area. Not just socially, but economically too. That is why I am pleased that the Council has heeded the call to keep Gwernyfed and Brecon High Schools open and not to go ahead with their proposed merger. I firmly believe that it was the local community, coming together and speaking with one voice against these proposals that did it and so a massive well done to everyone involved. However, it is time to continue the fight. We must ensure that it is not just the campus that is saved but the wider school as well. The Council are still going to consult on further proposals in the coming years and I will be doing everything I can to help save our schools. In other news, this month I was pleased to back British farming in Westminster to show my support for our fantastic farmers. That is why I was pleased that the Westminster Government has pledged to continue CAP payments until at least 2020 post-Brexit. Finally, I was also pleased to welcome the excellent new unemployment figures for our area. We have the lowest unemployment figures in Wales once again. This is further evidence of the benefits of having a majority Conservative Government in Westminster and I urge the Welsh Assembly to follow their lead. That’s it for this month. If you would like to contact me on these or any other issues you can do so by e-mail: chris. davies.mp@parliament.uk, or phone: 01982 559180.

Pete’s Carpets

Kirsty Williams The main reason I took the role of Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Welsh Government is because I know just how important the education of our children is and I wanted to do all I could to improve it. The role does throw up some challenges for me: for example, as the Education Secretary I am constrained from taking a public position on matters where I have a personal and constituency interest. As your Assembly Member, I can however reflect the views of my constituents. This is something I have done throughout my time in office. There can be little doubt of the strength of public feeling around Powys County Council’s plans to close Gwernyfed High School. The response from the community and surrounding communities was absolutely superb and appears to be a strong reason for the council’s recent decision to retain both Gwernyfed and Brecon High Schools.

My Liberal Democrat colleague, James GibsonWatt, who is the Councillor for Glasbury said of the announcement: “the complete change of direction on the future of Gwernyfed High School by Powys County Council is a victory for common-sense and just reward for the incredible efforts of the local campaigners who have argued so passionately and sensibly in support of the school and its community facilities.” Whilst the decision on Gwernyfed High School has been welcomed by many, there are still constituents with concerns about the other education proposals coming out of Powys County Council. Rest assured I will always represent my constituent’s views to the best of my ability on education, or on any other issue. Outcomes of the School Re-organisation proposals There is no doubt that the last 18 months has been a period of uncertainty for Brecon High School and other schools in South Powys given the two consultations that have taken place, the first of which was aborted. For the staff, pupils and parents of Brecon High School this has certainly not been helpful at a time when we have been working hard to bring the school out of Special Measures. The start of this academic year has brought real positives for the school in regards to both the work we have done in the classroom and the recommendations made by Powys County Council following the publication of the School Re-organisation Consultation report. Firstly, the school recorded record results at GCSE with our pupils achieving 75% Level 2+ (Level 2+ is a measure of those pupils who achieve 5 or more GCSE passes at A* to C, including Maths and English or Welsh). This is one key measure which demonstrates the impact of the work done by the staff to ensure our pupils not only reach their potential and, in many cases, exceed it. It also represents a 11% improvement on the 2015 results, which were a 9% improvement on the 2014 results!

post 16 education as a school based provision. There is more work for the school to do, firstly in working alongside the County Council and Gwernyfed High School in shaping the new recommendations regarding both schools, a report on which is to be presented in February 2017, and also to ensure that the community respond, once again, to the new consultation regarding the delivery of Welsh Medium education. When the new consultation is published we will publicise this and I hope that the whole community, not just the school and parents, can make their views known. Rob Broadbridge - Headteacher at Brecon High School

Secondly, the recommendations made by Powys County Council, following the publication of the report, were big steps toward securing the vision held by the Governing Body and the school for secondary education for the Brecon community. The recommendations which have now been made are to: abandon the proposal to close both Brecon and Gwernyfed High Schools to establish a new single site school, to abandon the proposal for Post 16 provision to be delivered by NPTC in Brecon and to abandon the proposal to close the two school sites from 2019/20. This also means there is to be a new proposal to Welsh Government for building a new 11- 18 school campus in Brecon, something that we desperately need, not least for our pupils, and secures secondary education for the Brecon community, including

REVIEW

“Professional, friendly and a real treat”

Winner of and finalist in numerous beauty salon awards, JoJo Beauty Studio can be found at Lion Yard in Brecon. Jo was keen for me to see all the Studio had to offer, especially their upstairs treatment rooms, so I knew I was in for a lovely time! When I arrived I was greeted by the very friendly receptionist who took my coat and offered me a drink. The reception area was light and modern, with plenty of products on display and a good choice of magazines to flick through. I was shown up to the candlelit treatment room which was pleasantly warm and had relaxing music playing in the background. The overall effect was calming and very relaxing. I was booked in for a hot stone back massage, skin mapping and a facial, and I was being treated by the salon manager, Sharlene. Sharlene was friendly and made me feel completely at ease. She began with the hot stone massage, which lasted about half an hour and involved heated stones being used as part of a more traditional back massage. It felt wonderful,

and certainly worked out any tension! Next Sharlene ‘mapped’ my skin, looking at it carefully under a spotlight to find any problem areas to work on during the facial I was to have, which she could then recommend products for. Thankfully my skin was declared in good nick! The Dermalogica Facial lasted an hour, the last ten minutes of which I was left alone for with a facemask on while Sharlene wrote up my Skin Mapping sheet. Lying on the comfy bed with the music playing was was just heaven! My skin felt really soft and hydrated when the facial was over. Sharlene went through my skin map with me and gave me samples of all the products she’d recommend for my skin type - she really did know her stuff and obviously had a real love for her work. Thank you so much to Sharlene, and the rest of the team at JoJo Beauty for a fantastic couple of hours. Professional, friendly and a real treat, JoJo Beauty will be seeing plenty more of me in the future! Article written by Laura Williams

Why the Lifetime ISA could wipe a third off your pension pot...

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

Workers who save into Lifetime ISAs could end up with a third less retirement income than those with pensions — despite putting in the same amount.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS

Banks and investment firms have recently been given the green light by the Treasury to launch the tax-free accounts for the under-40s in April.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION

Former Chancellor George Osborne wanted to get rid of this perk until Money Mail convinced him to do a “U-turn” earlier this year. He opted instead to introduce Lifetime ISAs, which some believed would replace pensions in the long term. But these deals look unlikely to be a success. Nationwide and Standard Life have said they will not offer Lifetime ISAs in April. And Lloyds, Barclays, TSB and Santander have all refused to commit — even after the Treasury confirmed the final rules for the savings accounts last month.

F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

ASHBROOK BENCHES MADE TO ORDER

Figures showing that pensions will offer far better value for money could also lead to a smaller takeup and deprive the Treasury of the chance to collect more taxes. We are worried that workers will be worse-off if there is a take-up of Lifetime ISAs over saving through a pension. With the introduction of autoenrolment companies now have to contribute to their worker’s pension pots and the worker still benefits from tax-relief on their contribution. The combination of free money from the employer and government make pensions a far more attractive option of saving for retirement over the long-term. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

What was the question?” Jimmy replied, “The question was ‘Who threw the bin at the principal’s head?’” Q: How do you make antifreeze? A: You steal her pajamas. Give each player ten to twenty pennies, which they can take it turns to throw into the pumpkin from behind the standing line. New in Town

Name of business: Beacons Tree Services. Where are you based / area you work in? My tree surgery work takes me to lots of local sites as well as much further afield. Over the last year I’ve done work in Brecon and the surrounding area as well as in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales valleys, London, Bristol and Worcester. I’m happy to go where the work is and have just been asked to carry out tree work in a private garden in Reading. Why Brecon? Soar, about 6 miles west of Brecon, is where I grew up and now have my yard and firewood business. It’s a rural area with a great community and a lovely place to live. If only the broadband speed was anything like as good as it is in Brecon town itself then all aspects of running the business from here would be excellent. Why did you decide to open this business, and what type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? I have always wanted to run my own business and tree surgery gave me the opportunity to start up by myself as soon as I had completed a Level 3 Diploma in Arboriculture at Pershore College, where I won an award for the student demonstrating excellence in practical forestry skills. While still at school (Cradoc County Primary and Brecon High) I did rock climbing competitively at national level and also enjoyed the outdoors – tree surgery was a natural progression. What are some of the challenges you encountered? Tree surgery needs a wide range of equipment which involves considerable expense when first setting up. Not just chainsaws but things like vehicles suitable for different terrain, trailers and chippers. All jobs need careful planning to ensure they are carried out safely and without damage to property. We recently removed some very large branches from a beech tree in Trallong churchyard where we had to take great care in a historic setting. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes and I have been very pleased with the amount and range of work that I’ve picked up already – but am always looking for more as most of my jobs are of a short duration. I’m also very grateful for so much local support both with premises and word of mouth recommendations.

Describe a typical day in your business? There isn’t one!! A day may include visiting new clients and providing them with advice and estimates, felling or pruning trees, logging up timber and delivering firewood, woodland management including thinning, tree planting, cutting back or removing a garden hedge, and herbicide treatment. And some of my work is at night – including rail-side tree clearance in different parts of the country. Any advice to new businesses in the area? It’s the sort of rural community that is very supportive of local enterprise and it doesn’t take long before clients begin to pass on recommendations to their neighbours and colleagues. However to get started and keep things going it’s well worth advertising in publications like the Local Beacon which offers good value for money and local circulation. How to contact Beacons Tree Services: Email: Robin Cloke on info@beaconstreeservices.com or call 07896 947571. Find me online: www.beaconstreeservices.com or visit FaceBook: Beacons Tree Services.

to her suggested infidelities doubts were expressed about the paternity of many of the children, who were unkindly referred to as the “Harleian Miscellany”. It would be good to see others taking up the challenge of researching and writing about these and several other notable women from Hay’s history as I do not think that I will be able to.To read more about them the book is available to buy on www.Lulu.com or from Broad Street Books in Hay. Jane Elizabeth Scott Having just written and published “The Lords of Hay” I can see many areas of Hay history which still need much more research. There is an interesting theme running through the history which highlights the lives of several exceptional women connected to Hay. Matilda de Braose, the early 13th century lady of Hay has been written about in myth and legend, most recently in the historical novels of Hay resident Barbara Erskine. Eva Marshall married to Matilda’s grandson “Black William” who was hanged by Prince Llewellyn after being found in the bedchamber of Llywellyn’s wife, Joan, lady of Wales. Despite this Eva was soon asked to approve the marriage of her daughter Isabel to the son of Llewellyn which had been agreed prior to William’s death. Eva held Hay until her death in 1246 and was responsible for the building of the town walls. Margaret de Bohun, wife of John, was widowed in 1336. John de Bello Campo was granted her hand by the king, soon after her husband’s death,” if she will marry him”. But in 1344 Margaret is nominating attorneys as she is going on pilgrimage to Santiago and other holy places in foreign parts. In 1734 Anne Wellington had to answer to the family of her husband Richard as administrator of his will. Anne had been Richard’s housekeeper and second wife, but the legal proceedings following his death show that the Wellington family were not happy with her administration. Jane Elizabeth Scott, pictured above, was the wife of Edward Harley, 5th Earl Oxford. They had at least seven children but due

there is a high risk of falls to reduce the risk of injury. • Five large televisions are also being purchased to make the patients stay more tolerable as the current 18” televisions are not suitable for visually impaired patients.

Local Treatments The League of Friends of Brecon Hospital actively support Brecon War Memorial Hospital annually with many thousands of pounds. The Hospital presents the League with a ‘Wish List’ which is arrived at by the various wards presenting their requirements for the forthcoming year. This is then prioritised by the League Committee as the funds at our disposal must be managed very carefully. The funding of new specific equipment on an annual basis allows the hospital to improve services and therefore treatment of patients, who benefit hugely as it enables consultants to come to Brecon and treat patients closer to home. The League raises funds by running an Autumn Fayre, Flag Day and the receipt of generous donations and bequests. They also run a hospital shop which is open Monday to Friday, four hours a day. They are constantly looking for volunteers. Please contact Mrs Ruth Williams on 01874 665489 in the first instance if you’d like to help. This year alone a total of £16,223.54 will be used to purchase equipment throughout the hospital. • Y Bannau Ward are going to receive two specialised recliner chairs in order to disperse excess fluid, essential when linked to heart failure. This can prove quite uncomfortable and difficult to resolve, therefore, a reclining chair with a raising footrest addresses these issues. • Y Bannau are also having dining tables with contrasting chairs for communal meal times as it is proven that patients benefit and appetites improve from vocal interaction and this is an important form of rehabilitation. The ward is also to receive an ultra-low bed to assist patients admitted with strokes and confusion where

• The League has agreed to pay for a series of pilot workshops to be run with the support of Brecon Area Dementia Friendly BreconCommunity who will employ creative artists to work along side the nursing staff to stimulate and encourage participation. This will commence in October. Dementia books and activity sets will be providedpurchased in addition to help staff stimulate patients. in addition. • The Children’s Centre have recently secured capital planning money to remodel the centre’s clinic rooms. The League of Friends are donating furnishings and fittings within these rooms to match the facilities available to children in the rest of Wales. • The podiatry department will receive a tilting podiatry chair which is multifunctional and makes life easier for the patient and the consultant. In the case of emergency resuscitation it allows the back to tilt flat and the legs to extend upwards. An ankle and toe pressure kit that measures the ABPI which is the difference in the pressures between the arm and the ankle will also be purchased. It analyses the toe pressures which enables the podiatrist to detect if the toes will heal after performing nail surgery. A useful storage unit will also be donated. • The Surgical Day Ward will receive a GE CARESCAPE V100 Vital Signs Monitor which allows for instant recording of patients blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturations. • Endoscopy will receive a replacement Gratnell trolley which is for the storage of endoscopy consumables. Many hundreds of thousands of pounds have been donated to the Hospital over the past thirty years which allows all of us to be treated for many ailments without having to travel far from our homes. Please remember The League of Friends if you are thinking of donating to a worthy cause. Visit them at their Autumn Fayre on Friday 14th October at Bishop Bevan Hall from 10am.
