Hello
Welcome to our November issue. We’re getting in the festive mood. Oh I do like Christmas and I think talking about it in November is just fine. I do have a strict rule not to put decs up until 1st of December… As you know this magazine is all about promoting local businesses, be it services, shop or events. With people starting their Christmas shopping, please turn to pages 31 - 38 to see why it is important to shop locally. I hold my hands up, not all the presents I buy are purchased between Brecon, Talgarth and Hay. I do go on-line. I do go further afield. But the important thing is I start locally. A big chunk of my list is bought from independent, local shops. Each year I get unique gifts because of this. Try it, you’ll be surprised at the prices too, often cheaper than else where. One other thing, enjoy it. Factor in some breaks with coffee and cake or a glass of fizz. If you haven’t planned the all important works party, turn to pages 26 – 30. We can help you on your way. Sales of our calendars really start to increase now. It seems local people buy the annual calendar for themselves or for a loved one to give at Christmas. Please see page 32 for a glance at the 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar along with a list of current stockists. Enjoy,
O

We also produce a similar publication for the Talgarth and Hay on Wye area. It’s called Wye Local. Just like this magazine the aim is to support local businesses and services. The good news is, if you are unable to pick up your copy of the Wye Local in the local catchment area, you can view it on our website from the beginning of each month. Some of the many topics included in Wye Local, November issue:
Industrial, Commercial & Domestic Installations Fire Alarms & Emergency Lighting
• Local Talent – Graphic Artist Dix • The Restless Gallery comes to Brook Street Pottery • Hay Festival Winter Weekend ... And much much more. Just go to www.wyelocal.co.uk and click on the small image of the front cover ...

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Since returning from the summer recess I have been hard at work, both in Westminster and our constituency. My time in Westminster has been largely taken up by my role on the Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, (EFRA). In the coming months this committee will cover a variety of important topics which effect rural Britain, from animal welfare to flooding. As a newly elected MP, I am proud to have gained a position within this committee as Brecon and Radnorshire is a rural constituency and the recommendations made within EFRA will have a long lasting impact on our community. Disappointingly I had to recently oppose my own Government. I and a number of Welsh Conservative MPs opposed the ‘Wales Bill’ which will give further powers to the Welsh Assembly over areas such as partial control of income tax, as well as over areas of transport and energy, this was not a decision I took lightly. For the Government to devolve further powers now to the Assembly is, in my view, a mistake. We need to devolve powers at a time when the Welsh Assembly is strong and capable of handling new powers in order that they can make the best of them. After all, we currently have (essentially) the same Assembly government who have presided over failing education standards, consistently missed health targets, and who reduced the agriculture budget and left the rural Welsh voice silenced around the Cabinet table. I believe in a strong Wales, playing its part in a United Kingdom. The phones in my constituency office are constantly ringing with people keen to improve their community in one way or another. My staff and I deal with a high volume of issues on a weekly basis. In recent weeks I have been campaigning on raising awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and met with dozens of constituents to discuss potential cuts by Powys County Council. I have also been kindly invited to attend events such as the Powys Business Awards and the Annual Dashain Festival at Dering Lines, Brecon. I want to help improve the constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire during my term as Member of Parliament. I can’t do that without the involvement of the inspirational people who contact me on a weekly basis. If you would like to discuss a local issue or campaign, then please contact me.

Newss from
Kirsty Williams As ever, there is plenty going on at the moment, with new school buildings, library services, day care provision and tourism facilities just some of the issues raised with me as the Assembly Member. Following the success of the Gwernyfed campaign there are now developments relating to Primary Schools in the area. Permission has been granted for a new school in Clyro, with Hay, Talgarth/Bronllys, Llangorse and Llyswen due for consideration. I would welcome the resolution of what have often been long-running cases. Hay-on-Wye library is under threat of closure. Powys County Council are asking Town Councils and local communities to either take on or contribute to the running of branch libraries, with a deadline of 31st October to agree arrangements. This is worrying news for a county-wide library service, with the October deadline making establishing the necessary relationships difficult. There is still time to have your say on the future of Day Centres, including Arosfa in Brecon. The Council’s consultation closes on 9th November. I have met with Powys to represent the views of concerned residents.

I have also met with Brecon Beacons National Park to discuss the future of the Mountain Centre, with financial pressures resulting in limited services over the winter months. It is important the Mountain Centre continues to promote tourism in the area. Please feel free to contact me to discuss these or other issues. I have upcoming advice surgeries in Hay (with Cllr Ratcliffe) and Llyswen (with Cllr GibsonWatt), and you can always get in touch to arrange an appointment in my Brecon office. Brecon Militaria Collector’s Fair 10 Years On... On the 12th February 2017, Brecon Militaria Collectors Fair, held in Brecon Town Market Hall, will be having its 10th anniversary.
Unlike a lot of the English fairs, they sell the full range of militaria, but the guns and munitions must be deactivated. They have dealers coming from far afield.
Back in the Summer of 2006, Jon Fonseca, who runs the militaria shop in Castle St, and Roy Garnell, both serious militaria collectors, were having one of their regular moans about how far you have to travel for a show, and how expensive the English shows are to get in.They took a decision to try having one in Wales. There were many objections from within the collectors’ field that unless it’s located on the M4 corridor it would be doomed to fail. Ignoring their objections, Jon and Roy stuck to their guns as they believed that Brecon, being Wales’ garrison town, would be an ideal location.
The public bring in lots of interesting stuff to sell, perhaps the most interesting being back in 2009 when two elderly sisters turned up at the market hall with a black plastic bag containing a World War I German signal mortar which their grandfather brought back from France in 1919. It seems his mother didn’t like it and made him put it in the barn where it remained. It was rusted solid and fiilled with everything you would expect to find in a barn. At this time, no one knew what the object was so the Imperial War Museum was contacted. They confirmed it was a very rare German signal mortar. Up to this point there was believed to be only one in the country. It is now part of the World War I display in Swansea Town Museum.
Doors open from 9 - 9.50am for the serious collectors, when the entry fee is £3. General public entry is from 10am, when the entry fee is £1 per adult and 50p per child.
So if you have anything to pass on regarding militaria, you know where to come.

News from Brecon Chamber of Trade
Guildhall as soon as possible – Cllr Williams said there will be no charge for Brecon businesses. John Powell from Plan Brecon attended the meeting and said that he, along with other volunteers, were planning to take down the many old posters which had been fly posted around Brecon. Nobody had any objections to this. The next Chamber of Trade meeting is Monday 7th November at 6pm at The Castle Hotel, Brecon. Brecon Chamber of Trade meets on the first Monday of the month and the October Meeting, held at the Castle Hotel, Brecon was particularly well attended and lively. John Cook, Chief Executive of the Brecon Beacons National Park and his colleague Ryan Greaney, a Principal Planning Officer, had been invited along to hold a Q&A session and they answered questions on a variety of subjects including who to contact regarding planning issues in the case of shop fronts, signage and colour. John also pointed out that 2017 marked the 60th anniversary of the creation of Brecon Beacons National Park and he hoped that Brecon and the Chamber of Trade would be involved in the celebrations.

Martyn Green, CEO of Theatr Brycheiniog added that the theatre will also be celebrating in 2017 as it will be twenty years since the theatre first opened its doors and he hoped that there could be some collaboration. Interestingly, John noted that in BBNP surveys the Monmouth & Brecon Canal had topped the list of favourite tourist destinations. Also present was Councillor Ieuan Williams who talked about the forthcoming Christmas event being organised by Brecon Town Council, to be held on Saturday 26th November in the town centre. The Christmas lights will be turned on at 7pm and free entertainment will be provided throughout the day. Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in November
are characteristic of old, long-established and unimproved grasslands (termed waxcap grasslands) which are a declining habitat, making them of conservation concern. Graveyards that are regularly mowed but not fertilised can be a good hunting ground for them as, for instance, is St Mary’s churchyard in Hay. My reference book (Roger Phillips’ “Mushrooms”) describes the one shown as “Very common. Edible but not good, due to sliminess.” I saw this in November on Gilwern Hill but have also seen it in Hay. The work of the Wildlife Trust continues in November and volunteers are always needed for the work parties. There are Reserve Work Parties on the 1st, 4th, 18th and 27th.

New in Town
both aimed at providing customers with a product and service, the customer base is entirely different as well as all aspects of back of house management.
Name of the business? Dressed To Impress! Where are you based? Wheat Street, Brecon (next to the cinema). Why Brecon? Firstly, it’s where my family and I live and secondly, at the time, and as far back as anyone could remember, there has not been a bridal/formal wear dress shop in Brecon.
What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? My business experience helped me to research and set up the business, but once open I think many years of working with the public has helped me far more. Also my experience with Publisher has helped me create many a marketing piece.
Why did you decide to open this shop? The seed was planted when I discovered that my son’s school was having an end of year prom, I was amazed as I didn’t know they had proms in Britain (probably showing my age here!) I wondered then where on earth parents went to buy their sons / daughters prom outfits; and where local people went to buy their dresses for formal cruise nights and other events. The idea kept growing as Dorothy Perkins store in Brecon closed and there was one less clothes shop here. Finally, towards the end of last year my temporary work contract came to an end, and that was it, the time was right.
Describe a typical day in your business: A typical day could start about 7:00am with creating any upcoming marketing pieces needed, followed by delivering flyers door to door. Upon arriving at the shop any deliveries are received, checked, priced and put out in the shop. At some point during the day I check emails and supplier referrals as well as posting messages on social media. At certain times of the year new trends have to be researched and orders placed for the next season’s designs. Of course, all through the day customers are attended to in the shop and any special orders placed. Lately I have been organizing a Bridal Fayre at the Guild Hall, so much of my time has been taken up with this.
What are some of the challenges you encountered? Ah, where to begin? My first challenge was the BBNP and signage, which made my second challenge harder to let people know that I am here and what I do. As I am tucked around the corner people don’t generally just walk by. I also didn’t realise how many people shop online for clothes especially formal and bridal-wear. I like to see and try things on beforehand, so it was a real eye-opener!
Any advice to new businesses in this area? Do your market research first and then take a deep breath and plunge! One of the most frequent things people have said to me is “Wow, you’re brave!” And that can be how it is; if you have an original idea, or something you feel you can do really well, you must pluck up the courage and do it, otherwise you will spend your whole life wondering “What if?” or “If only I had”.
Another challenge is how to encourage people to buy locally; some of the prices on my designer clothes are easily as good as internet prices and very favourable with larger city prices. What do you wish you had known before you started? What customers wanted/needed rather than what I thought they wanted, and how much people shop on the internet for clothes. I am not much for facebook, so I wished I’d known about facebook groups in the very beginning. Is this the first business you have launched? No, I owned a sub (sandwich) shop in Florida with my husband, and I have run a few science workshops. How is this different than the others you have launched? Well, it’s utterly different to the science workshops which were geared towards educating and entertaining children. Although the sub shop and Dressed To Impress are both retail and, therefore,
You will live, breath and dream your business so you must have the time for it. You will often forget to eat, and you may lose the shirt off your back, but at the end of the day you can say “I gave it my best shot”, and feel good about it. It takes a while to get a business going, so don’t give up too soon, not even after a few months. Keep positive and have your family and friends around you - they are invaluable, I don’t know what I would have done without mine. Oh, and pray, seriously! Expect change and be ready to adapt to it. It doesn’t matter how much you plan, however you think it is going to be, it probably won’t be. But that isn’t necessarily bad; challenges and the changes you have to make to adapt to them can bring about positive results. The recent falling £ has been a huge challenge for me as I import most of my clothes from the U.S., so I was forced to look closer to home and now stock a wonderful London designer with the added bonus of amazing prices!

“A lovely treat to visit for both tourists and locals!”
Though a little out of the centre of town, Pilgrims’ charming location in the grounds of Brecon Cathedral ensures it’s always a popular choice, especially as there always seems to be some sort of special event going on there!
sandwich, which arrived with crisps, salad and coleslaw. Both meals were very tasty, and I was particularly impressed with the very generous amount of delicious, crispy bacon in my sandwich and the fact that the bread is sourced from a local bakery.
When my friend Sarah and I arrived it was early for lunch, but plenty of tables were already occupied and there was a friendly hum of chatter and activity about the place. I would have been tempted to have sat outside as there are plenty of outdoor tables to choose from, and the Cathedral Close is wonderful for people watching, but it was a bit too chilly!
The pudding menu looked too delicious to resist so we opted for apple crumble and custard and orange and chocolate sponge with ice cream which we enjoyed with a pot of tea.The puddings were wonderful, tasting homemade and very comforting on a chilly Autumn day.
Menus are provided at the table, but are also on blackboards which also include daily specials. Our waitress took our order and returned quickly with our drinks, of which there was a good selection to choose from including local juices. We ordered a cheese and onion tart, which was served with very fresh salad and coleslaw, and a toasted smokey bacon, brie and cranberry sauce
Toni, the owner, came over as we were finishing to say hi and see what we thought of her new recipe for the cheese and onion tart (of which we were very complimentary!). This is what I love about local businesses: people taking the time to speak with their customers and find out what they actually think and would like! Pilgrims deserves all its success and is a lovely treat to visit for both tourists and locals! Review written by Laura Williams

Reasons to start shopping locally: Small and independent businesses are at the heart of our communities and it’s now more important than ever for the community to get behind them and show our support. Here are ten reasons why shopping local and supporting your local businesses will have a positive impact on you and your community.
1) Great for the local economy Local businesses are the backbone of our economy and shopping at local businesses is much better for the economy of your community than using large chains or faceless superstores. A strong culture of buying locally is the foundation of a sustainable local economy. Research has shown that spending £10 with a local independent shop, means up to an additional £50 goes back in to the local economy. The shop owners you give your money to when you buy from local businesses are also the same people that go to your local pub or café so will circulate the money throughout the community and help your local area thrive. 2) Creates local jobs When you shop at, and invest, in your local
businesses you help create more jobs in the local community. Did you know that small local business is largest employer nationally and provides jobs to the residents of our communities?
3) Supporting British entrepreneurs By buying from local businesses you are supporting the people who have helped make this country what it is, the great British entrepreneurs. Innovators such as Sir Alan Sugar, who started selling car aerials from the back of a van bought with his savings, relied heavily on the support of the local community to kick start the growth of his business during early difficulties. So why not go and buy from your local businesses? You might just be giving the next Richard Branson that gentle push in the right direction. 4) Better shopping experience Shopping at the local high street is also a much more rewarding and satisfying experience for customer compared to trawling through massive superstores confused about where everything is. Shopping local also provides a much more independent shopping

experience. Local shops stock an inventory based on their own customers choices rather than national fashion trends so you can buy what you want rather than what someone tells you to want. 5) Better quality of service Local business owners will provide a much better quality of service because they are passionate and they really do care about their customer’s satisfaction. Local shop owners are much more likely to go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to their customers, whether this means your local baker putting those extra hours in so they can customise your cake exactly how you wanted it or your local butcher throwing in those last few sausages for free when you don’t quite have enough change to pay for everything. 6) Shops are more creative and unique Local high streets are home to those amazingly diverse and quirky little shops that will stock the ‘where did you get that’ jewellery as well as all the other fun products you just can’t find anywhere else. In order for these local businesses to be able to compete with each other they must find their own style and identity in order to stand out so they choose products based on their own personal interests rather than a national sales plan. This
makes local businesses ideal for finding that unique and personal gift that is perfect for the ones you care about. 7) They help build communities/ community identity Communities can be defined by the distinctive businesses along the high street and the personalities of the owners who run these shops. A high street filled with vibrant shop fronts is the perfect place to meet and interact with the local community. This is exemplified by local cafes, craft shops and bookstores who try to stimulate custom by hosting events such as knitting clubs and book discussions. Not only this, but these events have a dual nature as they can also act as a catalyst for increased community spirit and identity. Furthermore the shop owners you interact with are the same people who run the local kids football team or organise charitable events in the community. So supporting local businesses helps you support your friends and neighbours. 8) Local businesses invest more into charities and the community Buying locally also means that you are indirectly supporting your own community because local businesses are known to be much more generous in terms of giving back to their own community. Researchers have found that non-profit organisations

receive on average 250% more support from small businesses than they do from large businesses. Local businesses are often heavily involved with community events and supporting local causes because they live in the local area and are just as interested in helping and pushing for improvement in the community as you are! 9) Good for the environment/ Ethical choice It has been found that using local business is also much more environmentally friendly than shopping at large corporations. Small independent businesses source locally and use less packaging than large retailers. This reduces their global footprint as they require less transportation costs and pollution, and leads to far less waste which only goes to fill up landfills. Added to this, local businesses are predominantly within walking distance whereas large megastores tend to be situated on the fringes of many towns. This means that by shopping locally you can do your bit in saving the environment by reduced car use, leading to less air pollution and cleaner communities.
gives you the opportunity to interact and socialise with the employees as well as having the chance to bump into friends and family within the local community, therefore supporting your local businesses can make your trip more than just a quick visit the shops. All we ask at Local Beacon is that you start your Christmas shopping locally. Whatever you don’t find, go on-line or go further afield. But by starting locally you really are investing in your town, in your community … and the bonus is you get a unique present for a loved one.
10) It’s fun! Shopping in your local high street or town centre is a much more enjoyable experience than looking around one large superstore or trying to find your way through the maze of a large shopping complex. Local shopping

“A real treat!”
The Retreat is part of the Well-Being Centre which is found in the Old Post Office building on St Mary’s Street, and also contains ‘Rob’s No Worries Yoga’ and ‘Sharon’s Bodywork Clinic’. I was greeted in the very welcoming waiting room by Donna, who runs The Retreat. She showed me into the treatment room and explained what she was going to do before leaving me to get undressed and comfy on the treatment bed. The room smelt delicious, of pure essential oils personally blended by Donna, used in an ultrasonic diffuser, and was calming, with a large photo of the amazing view from Donna’s own house on one of the walls. I was booked in for the Eve Taylor Skin Smoothing Salt Scrub and Moisturise. The treatment takes about 40 minutes and removes dead skin cells while also stimulating cell renewal. A finely ground sea salt is used which is infused with essential oils. Basically this is rubbed all over you as a lovely massage, then wiped
Donna spent time before beginning the treatment checking if I had any medical conditions. I have a problem with one of my ears which causes me vertigo if I lie flat so she set the head of the bed at an angle to help with this. She really is an expert at making people feel relaxed and at ease. There was no feeling that she was watching the clock at all, and I think she actually spent longer on the treatment than was advertised. The treatment itself was very enjoyable. The salt wasn’t nearly as grainy as I thought it would be, and wasn’t abrasive. I was offered an alternative to the Rescue & Repair Moisturiser if I’d rather something less thick, I went with the Moisturising Body Butter. My skin felt really soft, smooth and hydrated and I was very relaxed. It wasn’t a treatment that I would really have considered having before, but I would definitely have it again. My trip was a real treat! I certainly hope Santa brings me some vouchers for The Retreat in my Christmas stocking! Review written by Laura Williams

SEASONAL DILEMMA The last vestiges of Summer linger Whilst Autumn points an elongated finger A reminder of what lies ahead Is the signal we all dread The seasonal equinox is an extravaganza to observe As the shades set the scene in euphoric verve The carpet of leaves make a swirling rustle As life rattles on in contrasting bustle The flora and fauna discreetly blend As if they are following a fashion trend Whilst leaves are shed and paths are littered We remember in the height of Summer, they all glittered The trials of a hardy Winter Can pierce the body like a splinter
