Hello
It’s also party season, where seeing a group of ladies dressed as elves, or a gang of fellas dressed as Santa’s is not uncommon. Many office outings will by now be organised and date fixed, but if it isn’t take this issue into the boss and turn to the Party section. This should be a big enough hint! Don’t forget to rally up friends or family and arrange a get together locally. Our area is bustling with superb restaurants and drinking holes so you’re guaranteed a good feed or / and a delightful beverage or two. Happy birthday to Flowers By Becca Jane. Becca and I both started our own businesses in 2006 – and here we are 10 years later. Both also starting a family in this time. I wish Becca and her team the very best for the future. This month we start a new legal column. Turn to page 18 for an interesting read. Lastly I’d like to show a warm welcome to the following new advertisers. It’s a joy to have you on board. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Two weeks ago we received the fantastic news that employment in Brecon and Radnorshire is at an alltime high, with unemployment claimants falling by 62% since 2010 in our area. Brecon and Radnor is a fantastic place to live, and we are lucky to have such a beautiful and rural place to call home. That being said, we are seeing our constituency’s average age rise, year on year. This can create some issues for our local economy. I believe there are many issues that must be faced head on, both in Westminster and in the Assembly in order to rebalance our economy. We need to create an economy here in Brecon and Radnorshire that attracts young talent from all over the country, we must encourage high tech businesses, both large and small to set up in our community. The jobs created by these organisations and the prosperity they would bring would transform this area. But why don’t these companies set up in our community? South Powys has strong links to South Wales and South West England and the North to North Wales and North West England. Surely we would make the perfect hub for a successful tech firm or high tech manufacturing company. I believe there are areas in which we could improve in order to attract such firms.Transport is key to having a successful economy, I believe investment in our roads is a must in the coming years. Driving from the South of our constituency to the North you would have to drive all the way on one lane roads, the creation of some duel carriageways at various points and bypasses will help to navigate through Brecon and Radnorshire exponentially. This investment will show businesses that we are open for business. The next area we must improve is rural broadband. I have campaigned on this issue both in Westminster and within Brecon and Radnorshire and access is now slowly increasing. This is a key reason why businesses don’t move to our constituency, they simply can’t get the high speed access they require to operate an effective business. In the 21st century we should not have parts of our country that can’t get effective mobile and internet access. We are in the middle of a global digital era and having high speed broadband would be a huge pull for businesses to set up here.

Brecon and Radnorshire has an incredibly proud military history, which is why it was so disappointing to hear that the Conservative Government plans to close the Brecon Barracks.
Wishing all of our customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
The proposed closure will come as a massive blow to the area. This decision, along with the planned closure of the Sennybridge Storage Compound, show the UK Government’s complete lack of respect for our history.
FREE LOCAL DELIVERY
It is the latest in a long line of closures to local facilities caused by Conservative cuts. We are seeing the damage these are causing across all of our communities. We need to send a strong message to the UK government that they must keep our barracks open. The petition on my website against the closure already has hundreds of signatures, you too can sign up at http://www.brlibdems.org.uk/barracks.

Rural Schools In my role as Cabinet Secretary for Education, I recently announced plans to protect and invest in rural schools. Small and rural schools play an important role in raising standards and extending opportunities for all our young people. All children must have access to the best possible education and the same opportunities as other children in Wales, wherever they live.
dd ff f d
The plans I announced will enable councils and schools to be innovative and do what is best for pupils and their communities. Amongst several new measures the plans include: a presumption against closure, local authorities will have to carry out more rigorous consultation and conscientiously consider all viable alternatives to closure and a new £2.5m per year fund to promote community usage of school buildings and support greater school to school working. This was part of the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto and I am very pleased to be introducing the policy that will strengthen rural schools. If you would like more information on this policy, or on any other issue, please contact my office at Kirsty. williams@assembly.wales or on 01874 625 739.

Trallong Eisteddfod 2016 At Trallong Eisteddfod, which was held in Sennybridge Primary School, the awards for competitors who, in the opinion of the adjudicators have the most potential were won by Abigail Davies of Llanfihangel Nant Bran and Rose Graham of Llangattock. Abigail won the Mrs. Mary Price trophy in the local section and Rose won the miniature chair made and given by Mr. Alec Tompkins in the open section. The children’s classes were very well supported and the standard was very high. It was pleasing to have three parties from Sennybridge School in the Cyd-Adrodd competition, each party having more than five members. Thanks go to Mrs Gwyneth Williams for preparing the children for this competition and for helping them with their individual recitation and singing competitions. In the open classes there were ten competitors in several of the classes, some having travelled long distances to take part. The evening session was again outstanding. Heulyn Cynfal won the champion solo competition, beating seven other excellent competitors to win the major prize. The champion recitation winner was the lcoal centenarian Mrs. Helena Jones, herself a long-standing committee member of Trallong Eisteddfod.Aberhonddu MaleVoice Choir won the choir competition. Trallong Eisteddfod are very grateful to the conductor, accompanist and choristers for their continued support. The adjudicators, who gave helpful advice and constructive criticism to every competitor were Mr. Rhys Griffiths of Cardiff, who adjudicated the musical items; Mr. Garry Owen of Pontardulais who adjudicated the recitation and senior literary items and Miss Bethan Price of Heol Senni who adjudicated the junior art and literature classes. The talented accompanists for the day were Mrs. Lynette Thomas of Brecon who stepped in at the very last moment to cover for Miss Bethan Rees who was indisposed, and Mr. Gareth Wyn Thomas of Capel Hendre. Conductors Mrs. Mary Hodges of Cardiff, Mrs Annette Thomas and Mrs Rhian Dillon (both of Brecon) and Mr. Hywel Phillips of Sennybridge ensured the smooth running of the event. The President for the afternoon session was Mrs. Gwyneth Williams of Sennybridge while the evening President was Mrs. Janet Watkins of Trecastle. Both gave thought-provoking addresses and generous donations. “Thanks are also due to Eirlys and Marjorie for preparing
and serving refreshments throughout the day. We are also indebted to, David, Gethin and Julie who acted as door stewards and to Mrs. Margery Davies of Llangynidr for her clerical help. Grateful thanks go to our loyal competitors and patrons who support us each year. At the end of the evening, Mrs. Marilyn Jones, chairman of the committee proposed an omnibus vote of thanks to everyone who had contributed in any way towards the success of this year’s eisteddfod, making special mention of our loyal competitors and patrons who support us each year.” Trallong Eisteddfod committee would also like to extend their thanks to their wonderful band of helpers who cook Welsh cakes at Brecon and Hay Food Fairs and at the Brecon Jazz Festival. It is at these events that the bulk of the money needed to run the eisteddfod is raised. “Without the money raised in this way, we would be unable to continue to stage this eisteddfod - so important in maintaining local culture in our part of Powys”.

Get to really know... Neil Pooley - NSP Plumbing Services When was the business started? The business was set up in May 2016.
What made you setup the business? The reason was because I had recently retrained as a plumber and gas engineer. Where are you based? I am a sole trader based in Brecon. I cover Brecon and the surrounding areas. Approx radius covered is 25 to 30 miles. Every customer is a primary customer. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Ambitions are to grow the business and as I am a qualified gas engineer, to branch out into gas boiler services and installations.
The one regret about my business is that I didn’t do it sooner. It has been a ‘pipe dream’ since I was 18. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? One hidden talent is carpentry. I have impressed myself as well as others. What would be your dream assignment? My dream assignment would be to plumb a new build from top to bottom. Sum your business up in five words: • Professional • Plumbing • Services • Trustworthy • Pricing
What is your greatest achievement in your business? The greatest achievement in my business is setting it up, getting out there and showing people that there is a fast, reliable plumbing service at reasonable prices. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? My family have been my biggest help, fully supporting me changing career paths, especially my wife, she is my rock. List five goals on your business to-do list:

State pension triple lock under threat: Will pensioners face lower annual rises in future?
INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE
“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS
The ‘triple lock’ guaranteeing the elderly an annual state pension increase of at least 2.5 per cent is under threat. The basic state pension is currently £119.30 a week and the full new flat rate is £155.65 a week. Annual rises in the state pension are decided by whatever is the highest of price inflation, average earnings growth or 2.5 per cent. Critics have always said that the triple lock guarantee, introduced by the Coalition Government in 2012, could prove an unviable financial commitment in the longer term, as a ratchet effect means it will become increasingly expensive to maintain. A demand for the Government to ditch the valuable pledge in 2020 was recently launched by MPs on the Work and Pensions Committee. Ex-Pensions Minister Ros Altmann has also renewed her call for it to be scrapped in favour of a ‘double lock’. And industry experts have chimed in to point out the present system is costly and unsustainable. But pensioners could take a big financial hit if the triple lock is abandoned. One estimate suggests that if a weaker earnings link had been used instead from 2012, a pensioner couple would have suffered a near £1,000 cut to their annual income by 2020. Prime Minister Theresa May has promised to honour a Tory manifesto pledge to protect the triple lock, but that might only stand until the next election - which could be soon given her troubles in getting Brexit under way.

Making a Will I am often told by clients that they have been putting off making their Wills for some time; it is only natural to approach the task with some trepidation and some acceptance that, at some time in the future, we will need it!
Don’t work your fingers to the bone, let US do the hard work for you
But making a Will should not be seen as a sign of your impending doom but rather as a sensible step to give yourself some assurance that your worldly goods will find themselves in the hands of the people you would like to have them and that your family, if you have one, will be properly provided for after your days.
DON’T delay, call us TODAY! Ask for Alison or Carl Tel: 01874 640090 Mob: 07503 755610
Making a Will is not usually a complex process and there will be very few circumstances a local solicitor will not have seen before, from second and third marriages to family divisions and reconciliations and so on.
ROOFING THE ORIGINAL PERRY FAMILY trading as:
As with any task, you will need to make some decisions, such as who you would like to appoint as your executors or guardians for your children while they are young, whether you would like to make specific gifts of items or money and, ultimately, who you would like to be the beneficiaries of your Estate but a local solicitor will guide you through that process.
The Perry family has been repairing roofs in this area for over 45 years (three generations): • Traditional built up high tensile felting systems, fibre glass, single ply, liquid coatings, slating & tiling with manufacturers’ backed guarantees ranging from 10-25 years; • UPVC fascias and guttering – with 10 year guarantee. Your property deserves the best so, for a free survey and estimate
If you already have a Will you should review it every three to five years to ensure that it accurately reflects your circumstances.

Danygaer Mill when in use as Eagle Stores Building Plaques As you walk about Brecon, have you noticed that some buildings have plaques on them? There are at least 31 so have you ever found them all? Rob Eckley of the Breconshire Local & Family History Society has recorded the plaques and photographed the buildings on which they are located. He has bought all the results together in a new book. Illustrated in full colour, the book also has a useful map which leads you around the town on a gentle walk looking at the buildings as you go. The printing and published of the book has been made possible with support from Brecon Town Council. Copies of the book can be obtained from The Clerk’s Office at The Guildhall Brecon (during office hours) and from the Tourist Information Centre in the main town car park. On Danygaer Mill behind The Bank on The Watton, the plaque states that the building was “built for Messrs Jebb & Dobell in 1892 as part of the Brecon Brewery. In 1916 it was a wool depot and re-named Eagle Stores. From 1919 to 1984 it became a grain store, and grain milling, rolling and mixing were carried on there by WBFA & the Farmers’ Union. The tower remained vacant until its recent use as a dwelling.” WBFA – West Breconshire Farmers’ Association www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

BRECON Poets: MIKE DOUSE THE DOG AND THE HOMEWORK I have in mind (where else?) the notion Of an ideal Dog, Platonic as opposed to Poodle. And with Homework, much the same: The form of Homework, no specific Prep, Perhaps a bit of Sophocles, a subtle touch of Aeschylus, some lines from faithful Euclid, then A Xenophon campaign or two before my bed. Ingestion overnight occurs. Quite why The Dog mistakes the tattered manuscripts For entradhes none may know. Was he not fed Sufficiently on bones and stuff from tins and Bits from boxes, who can tell, save that my ancient Compositions tasted well. The story – and it often is A story – tends to end with lame excuses in The schoolroom, unbelieved. More pertinent, what Happened to the Dog? Chockfull of fine Hellenic Fare, replete with tales of Troy, does he now bark With Odysseus, as cunning as the travelled sun? And then there was that Slave of Meno. Socrates Showed he’d already known those properties of squares And, twenty-one voracious centuries on, we still devour Those tasty dialogues and, in our waters, seem to sense Those truths that rest within us, unrevealed. The Slave Himself, they say, was never quite the same again, all Chores ignored, part edified, part stupefied, alone he Ponders, silently by moonlight, at the wine-dark sea. Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

REVIEW
A superb present for Christmas! Iris Brown is a single parent doing her best to raise her beautiful two-year-old daughter, Paola. But when Sergio, Paola’s father, a dashing-but-arrogant Spanish businessman comes back on the scene, everyone’s lives are thrown into chaos. She fears he may take Paola away from her. Iris must decide what’s best for her and her daughter, and whether she can ever trust Sergio again. He broke her heart once. Will she let him do it again?’ Emma’s books are available from local bookshops, Amazon or your local library! For more information about Emma visit her website at : www.emma-bennet.co.uk “I picked up His Secret Daughter and I was gripped. From the first page the author, Emma Bennet jumps straight into the action. In many books it takes a few chapters for any bit of excitement.
The characters are very believable, in some instances I found myself reading in a Spanish accent in my head! The characters were also infuriating at times, but that of course made it an captivating read. You don’t get the result you hope for... I don’t want to say anymore as it will ruin the story line. But rest assured, this book is a must for the dark nights and rainy days. The story is bright and well written. The book would make a superb present this Christmas, please do tell the receiver that it was written right here in Brecon.” Lisa Marie Badham x

REVIEW
“ Would recommend The White Swan to anyone!”
I have friends living in Llanfrynach and had heard very good things about the food at The White Swan, so was thoroughly looking forward to visiting! The Inn certainly looked inviting, its lights shining out into the cold, dark evening. It’s divided into three areas: a bar, where dogs are welcome and food can be served, the restaurant and a terrace and beer garden. The large car park makes parking convenient. The White Swan was pleasantly busy and gloriously warm as we stepped in. The décor was very nice, with some exposed brick work, plenty of lamps and large wooden tables. A chalkboard on one wall contained the specials. We were shown straight to our table and ordered a glass of wine each, the Malbec my husband ordered was particularly yummy!
good, as was the Parma ham and really fresh, juicy melon. Our main courses were equally delightful, though very different from one another. There was much passing of food over the table as we both sampled everything, though I didn’t give up many of my chips! Venison is something you don’t see on every pub menu, and it was a real treat. I liked the fact that a lot of their food is locally sourced. I didn’t have much room left for pudding but was determined to try the special of rhubarb, apple and ginger crumble with custard, and was very glad I did as it was amazing. My husband had to step in and finish it off for me (I can’t tell you how many times he has performed such a duty!) after he’d had his own crème brulee and raspberry sorbet, which I managed a couple of mouthfuls off and can confirm was gorgeous!
After much deliberation we settled on our choices: tiger prawns for starter for me, followed by one of the specials, a spinach and ricotta filo pastry pie served with salsa and chips; and Parma ham with melon then venison for my husband, which he chose to have served with new potatoes and steamed vegetables.
We finished off with freshly brewed coffee.
Delicious bread was brought round in a basket, which I tried to resist as I am renowned for filling up on it before a meal, but failed miserably! I did manage to save some to dip in the olive oil the prawns were fried in! Our starters soon arrived and were perfectly proportioned and beautifully presented. I asked our host whether the prawns were fried in butter when I ordered and he said as they were cooked fresh I could choose what I would like them cooked in: how fab is that? They were very
We’re now planning to do a family walk to The White Swan from Brecon and refuel the children with some of their fantastic chips before completing the circuit.
The quality of the food at The White Swan was very high, especially considering the prices they charge, which are comparable with places serving much more ordinary fare in surroundings not nearly as pleasant.
Thank you very much to everyone at The White Swan, but especially the charming Roberto, for looking after us so well. We had a really wonderful evening and would recommend The White Swan to anyone! Review written by Laura Williams

Local Talent: Karin Mear
Type of Artist? I’m a visual artist who paints and draws but I also use photography and film to convey my ideas. Range of Products? My paintings are mainly in acrylic or watercolour and I also have a range of digital pop art style prints which feature farm and domestic animals, created jointly with my partner Nigel Evans and exhibited under the title ‘Baaah’. Price range? £35 - £600. How long have you been an artist? Art has always been a passion of mine, even as a child. At the age of fifteen I won a national competition run by the Observer Magazine to design a Christmas card and I’m sure this encouraged me to pursue a career in art. Where did you train or gain experience? I took a foundation course in Art & Design at the South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education, at Howard Gardens in Cardiff and gained an Honours Degree in Ceramics and Art at the University of Glamorgan. Following my degree I moved to London where I sold designs to companies such as Paperchase who produced greeting cards from them. Artist statement: My work is based on observation of everyday life, childhood memories and ideas which begin as tiny thoughts which lurk in my mind until I’m ready to commit them to canvas. I’d like to think that my paintings are thought provoking – unlike the Baaah prints which are bright and cheerful and hopefully make people smile. Where can your work be seen? My paintings can be purchased directly from me or at exhibitions - I take part in the annual Brecon Town Open Studios Trail which launched in June last and this is a great opportunity for people to meet me and see my latest work. Baaah prints are currently on sale at Theatr Brycheiniog’s Christmas Collection Exhibition which runs until 2nd January 2017 and also at an exhibition in Havard & Havard Antiques, Cowbridge until Christmas. Exhibition details can be found on www.karinmear. com or I can be contacted on 07432 129687 What has been your proudest moment? My proudest moment was when I was awarded First Class Honours
for my degree – I don’t believe that artists need to have qualifications in order to be successful but I do believe that studying for a degree challenged my approach to art and opened my mind to new ideas. I was proud that my efforts had been recognised. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? My ‘masterpiece’ is yet to come! Have you any future plans for your work? I’m not a landscape painter, despite living in the Brecon Beacons National Park, but I would like to get out more and paint ‘en plein air’. Hopefully I’ll achieve this in the coming year. What advice would you give a local artist? I would give all artists the same advice – paint from your heart and don’t get bogged down with painting what you believe people will want to see. Have confidence in your work and believe in yourself as an artist. Show your work! I would advise young, newly qualified artists to keep on creating from the moment they finish their studies, even if they have to survive on low-paid part time jobs to support themselves. It’s very difficult to be a productive artist once you find yourself on a different, but well paid career path. What other local artists do you admire? I admire anyone who makes art despite the social and financial challenges that most of us are facing, however if I have to choose one I’d say Antonia Spowers who has gained international acclaim for her sculptures yet is always ready to offer advice and support to other artists.

Christmas Markets
Brecon Farmers Market usually takes place on the second Saturday monthly in Brecon Market Hall, but this month there are two Christmas markets. The first Christmas Farmers Market is on Saturday 10th December. This will be an event for all the family with music provided by South Powys Youth Music, a Christmas raffle and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus who will be in his Christmas Grotto with gifts for the children (a small fee will be charged). The second Christmas market will take place on Sunday 18th December and this will provide a timely opportunity to stock up on poultry, vegetables, cooked meats, chutneys, fresh game products, Christmas cakes and puddings, chutneys and pickles, cheeses, artisan bread, vegan pies, real ale, cider, mulled wine, honey, fresh olives, nuts and much more including craftsman made turned wood products and hand woven accessories. Simon Mackenzie, Chair of the Farmers Market Steering Group says: “Come along and meet the makers, sample their food and find the perfect present for the person who seems to have everything.” The Farmers Market Café, run by Love at First Bake, will be serving delicious Christmas themed cakes (all gluten free) and customers can also create a picnic lunch using food bought at the market and eat at the tables provided. Teri-Ann Winslow from Love at First Bake says: “The café is a great meeting place for friends and family. Come and enjoy a hot drink and a snack and listen to the music - South Powys Youth Music were fantastic last year and we are delighted to have them back on December 10th”. Nigel Devlin from Caroline’s Real Bread Company has some crucial advice for customers. He says: “Come early to get the pick of the produce. And don’t forget a mince pie and a carrot for Rudolph!”
Come and see our unique range of gift ideas and Christmas stock Advanced date for your diary Our fantastic January sale begins on Thursday 5th January, see website for further details
The Christmas Markets will be open from 9am – 2pm. For more information visit www. breconfarmersmarket.co.uk or call 07926 196714. Brecon Farmers Market can also be found on Twitter @breconfarmersM and on Facebook.
