Hello

The month of January is a strange one. Some enter the New Year with positive feelings, determined to make changes to their lives be it their diet, exercise regime or outlook. Others start January with a touch of sadness, the big man has been and gone, Christmas is over, family gatherings come to an end. Please turn to page 26 to read some of the team’s New Year resolutions. During 2017 we really hope to provide our readers with interesting and informative articles. We are chuffed with the monthly contributors we have. From local history instalments to a monthly poem, from financial information to legal matters explained, from wildlife descriptions to gardener’s tips … Thank you to each and every author who meet our tight deadlines each month. Please turn to page 19 to see how Talybont on Usk is supporting local food producers. This is a superb idea, every £1 spent through this scheme, 90p will stay in the local community of Talybont, Brecon and surrounding villages. Go along to the launch if you can, and if not check out the ordering website. This month is the last chance you’ll have to buy the 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar. Didn’t get one for Christmas? Turn to page 38 to see where you can purchase one. Happy New Year to one and all. Here’s hoping 2017 brings us tears of joy, smiles and laughter. Enjoy,

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

Without doubt, 2016 was a year of massive political change. Our prime minister has changed, our relationship with Europe will change, Donald Trump will be President of the United States, and the list goes on and on. 2017 could be a year for change here in Powys too. In May we will have local elections to Powys County Council. People right across the county frequently tell me they are frustrated with how our public

services the council provide are to communities across the county and we know the most vulnerable in our society depend on them most of all. I was very pleased to secure a funding floor for rural councils, including Powys, in this year’s Welsh Government budget. Rural areas have unique challenges in delivering its services and it is right the government recognises this. My focus in 2017 will be to continue to work alongside communities to protect services they rely on, to create and protect jobs so we can further develop our economy. I hope you and your family had a good Christmas, and I wish you all the very best for the New Year. As ever, if there is anything I can do to help, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can call my office on 01874 625739, attend one of my regular surgeries, or send an email to Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

BRECON Poets: ROSALIND DAVIES Rosalind Davies was born in London of Irish parents. She has worked as a teacher and lived in England, Scotland and Ireland. She is now spending her 80’s in Wales.

THAT’S NOT ME Is that me? Edging down the bank Probing the way with stick And cautious steps Surely that’s not me. That’s never me Stepping slowly down the street Stick sounding on the paving Scarf and dog leads tangling Dropping purse and gloves Exciting help from strangers Can we help you lovey? Can we hold your shopping? But no, they don’t mean me Not offering help to me For I can swim a river, run a road race Climb a mountain Can’t they see? That old woman is not me.

Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to breconpoets@yahoo.com and not directly to the Local Beacon.

A boost for Dementia Friendly Brecon

A full house at Llangorse Village Hall gave local charity, Dementia Friendly Brecon, a big boost when over £740 was raised by a lunch organised by members of Llangasty Womens Institute. The event was organised by Frances Issacs, Gaynor Skyrme and Jean Calderwood - supported by other members of the WI branch which normally meets on the first Wednesday of every month at Llangasty Village Hall. Rhiannon Davies from Dementia Friendly Brecon Community gave a short talk on the aims of the charity which exists to raise awareness and understanding of Dementia in Brecon. She said, “It is vital to raise awareness and understanding of dementia in order to remove the stigma associated with the condition so that people living with dementia and their carers do not feel excluded from the community but receive our understanding and support. This can - and is - being achieved by creating dementia friendly communities and Brecon is in the forefront of this important movement.”

News from Trallong & Penpont WI

GLANUSK SERVICES Sennybridge

At the AGM of Trallong & Penpont WI held in November, Mary Robinson was re-elected as president, Ruth Jefferies as secretary and Heather Thomas as treasurer. The president reported on the varied and enjoyable 2016 programme and thanked her team and members for all their help and support. There are about 20 members and appreciate the fact that some of their members who have retired and have moved out of the village still return to Trallong. They say goodbye to Lee Cox who is moving away and welcome to Pam Ansell. Wendy Hughes and her Tribal Belly Dancers in their colourful costumes entertained us and members joined in swaying and rotating hips to the music. The December meeting had a Christmas theme with party food and a secret Santa present for all. Jenny Smart from Bobbins demonstrated wool felting Christmas decorations and everyone went home with a tree decoration that they had made. Members received a draft programme for 2017 with a Fun and Games evening planned for the January meeting and the annual dinner to be held on Wednesday 11th January at Cradoc Golf Club including husbands and partners.

Type of Artist? Letter carving artist and stone mason. Range of Products? All types of hand carved stone and letter carving commissions. Price range? Prices depends on how complex the commission is. All quotations are free. How long have you been an artist? 35 years. Where did you train or gain experience? I was the first full time female student to study stone masonry at Weymouth College in Dorset. Artist statement: In the 80s it was hard to succeed as a stone mason being female. There were lots of barriers put in my way but I managed to avoid most of these by starting my own business and just getting on with it as best I could. During my career I have strived to develop my skills and worked on many interesting and demanding commissions. Royalty has unveiled some, so I must have been doing something right, I suppose.

Cost of living crunch begins as inflation jumps to two-year high of 1.2%

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

The UK’s cost of living has started to rise at a faster rate with inflation jumping to 1.2 per cent in November, according to official data.

F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS

The Office for National Statistics said that inflation, as measured by the consumer prices index, rose from 0.9 per cent in October.

F INHERITANCE TAX MITIGATION

It is the first time for two years that the inflation figure has edged above the 1 per cent mark Rising prices for clothes, motor fuels and a variety of recreational and cultural goods and services, including hotel and restaurant charges, were the main contributors to November’s increased rate. It is expected that consumer price inflation will trend markedly higher over the coming months as sterling weakness increasingly feeds through. December’s jump in oil prices to an 18-month high will also impact. Specifically, inflation is expected to reach its 2.0 per cent target rate during the first quarter of 2017, then rising to 3 per cent in the latter months of the year and peaking around 3.3% early on in 2018.

F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES F FAMILY PROTECTION Contact: t: 01874 611911 e: enquiries@beaconifa.co.uk w: beaconifa.co.uk Directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority

Overcome, Conquer and Discover a new way of thinking, feeling and living.

There is little evidence so far that rising inflation will translate into much higher interest rates, so anyone with savings still sitting in cash will struggle to generate real returns.

TERRI ROSE HYPNOTHERAPY & REIKI

To stand any chance of achieving an inflationadjusted real return savers will need to look further up the risk spectrum, investing in bonds issued by companies rather than the Government or moving into stocks and shares.

The Food Assembly Comes to Talybont on Usk! A new way of buying food is coming to Talybont on Usk. As seen in the BBC andThe Guardian,The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and foodmakers. Every week Food Assembly customers in Talybont on Usk can order food online from local food producers before picking it up weekly at their local community venue, Henderson Hall. All the food comes from a distance of less than 28 miles, compared to the 600 miles with a supermarket, and most producers are within a 15 mile radius of the village, showcasing some of the best local food the Brecon Beacons has to offer. Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly – it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the community of Talybont on Usk, Brecon and surrounding villages, as for every £1 spent through Talybont on Usk Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy.

supports local producers, in such a fresh & convenient way, through the ease of ordering online & being able to collect all your food from one place at the same time each week, just makes sense to us. It’s going to have a huge positive impact & we are really grateful for all of the support we have received so far, & can’t wait to launch!” - Ceri and Jon The Talybont on Usk Food Assembly launches on Monday 23rd January at 5pm through to 7pm.The venue is Henderson Hall. Locals can meet farmers, foodmakers and their neighbours, taste local food samples and see where their food comes from. To become a member and be able to shop online, which is free and easy, from their ever-growing pool of local producers, please sign up here: https://foodassembly.com/en/assemblies/9057 If you are a local producer interested in bringing your produce to this Assembly, they would love to hear from you so please contact Ceri and Jon at tboufoodassembly@gmail.com

It also ensures your money reaches the right people; food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15%-25% through supermarkets. Also, there is less food waste as all the food is ordered in advance. Whether from their iPhone app or laptop, weekly shoppers can choose from unique local products, such as organically grown vegetables and fruit from The Kitchen Garden at Ty Mawr; quality meat, poultry and ready to cook meals from Easts of Brecon farm and butchers; small batch roasted coffee from Black Mountain Roast; and hand made fresh pasta featuring locally grown and sourced fillings from Nonna Caterina Fresh Pasta. Not to forget dairy and soon to be included, artisan breads. The Talybont on Usk Food Assembly is organised by local food-obsessed couple Ceri and Jon Elms, who want to share their passion for good, local food and create a community food hub for other food-lovers in the village.

A postcard which was posted in 1905 showing Buckingham Tower Buckingham Tower The church of St Mary’s in the centre of Brecon is undergoing repairs – from the inside. However the 90 foot Buckingham Tower stands tall as a landmark in the townscape. The tower was built in 1515 by Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham and Lord of Brecknock. Edward was born in Brecon Castle in 1478 the oldest son of Henry Stafford and Katherine Woodville. Edward was often found at court with the future King Henry VIII, and was made a member of Henry’s Privy Council. In 1513 he went with Henry to fight in France and a few years later in 1520 they were together at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. However, later in 1520 Henry was told that the Duke of Buckingham was listening to prophesies that the King would soon die and Buckingham would succeed to the throne. Henry would not stand for that and Buckingham was charged with treason and imprisoned in The Tower of London. He was executed on 17 May 1521. For the last couple of years, The Buckingham Tower, has on and off, been a favourite look out post for two peregrines. The feathers under the Tower give clues to the food of the peregrines including snipe, jackdaw, thrushes and mostly unexpectedly woodcock and manx shearwater. www.blfhs.co.uk

News from Brecon Chamber of Trade It’s a year in February since the Brecon Chamber ofTrade was reformed. During that year we have learned of the many difficulties facing small businesses in this beautiful market town. One of the main problems looming for small Welsh businesses at present is the 2017 business rates re-evaluation. Some peripheral business locations will see their rateable values double and some of our bigger food businesses have seen even larger increases. We already have a vacant shop percentage creeping towards 20%, the Welsh average stands at 10.8% and some towns such as Monmouth are even below 3%, which is totally unacceptable and could well increase if the full impact of the re-evaluation takes hold. As a Chamber we have lobbied our local MP, Chris Davies, and also made representations to the Assembly. We are now joining with Monmouthshire and Cowbridge Chambers to call for the Welsh Assembly to follow England’s lead with their plan to protect small business from the re-evaluation. In England they have declared that small businesses with a rateable value of £12,000 or less will be completely covered by the Small Business Rate Relief Scheme indefinitely and they have promised transitional relief for larger businesses. In addition myself, our secretary Sarah Lewis and Chairman Brian Popsys, have also joined the steering group for Brecon Town Plan. This is an extremely important document which forms a platform for future large scale fundraising for Brecon and will sit alongside the Local Development Plan for consultation in future planning recommendations. This will go through a public consultation process next year and is an ideal opportunity for everyone to have their say and submit ideas regarding Brecon’s future direction. Recently I have also launched our Empty Window Scheme which has kicked off with two wonderful displays by Ty Mawr Lime and Likey’s in the old Crickhowell Adventure Gear shop at the top of Ship St. The windows look fabulous and really brighten that area of town. This scheme will roll out to other prominent empty retail spaces during 2017. New members are always very welcome, to get in touch please contact Sarah Lewis at chamberoftradebrecon@gmail.com.

New Year, New Resolutions! We decided to introduce this new feature, to gear people up for the New Year ahead. Many start January with new and exciting changes to their life, so this feature will hopefully help them to find local services and businesses who can help. For those of us who don’t think in this way, me included, perhaps we should. A positive change can only be good right? No matter how small, no matter how many changes you decide, start here by reading this feature. And be realistic. So I thought it would be a good idea for the team to write down our own New Year resolutions when it comes to our health and wellbeing. So here goes: My biggest change is for my mind. For years I have become obsessed by certain dramas going on in my life. These thoughts eat away at me. I overthink things and just before bedtime this is a really horrible habit. So as I enter 2017 I’m starting with a fresh, positive outlook. I’m going to practice meditation each evening (I’m really not a morning person and with two kids to get ready as well as myself, I’d be lying to say I would add another ’to do’ in my morning routine!). It’s taken something very sad in recent weeks to put life into perspective. You only

get one life, live it, who knows how long you’re here for. With farming blood I’m a bit of a penny pincher. With the exclusion of my boot fetish, I have many, many pairs! But I never spend money on my appearance and body. I’ve never dyed my hair as my thinking behind it is that the upkeep would cost to much. Well this year I am going to splash out on a monthly treatment, be it a back massage, a manicure, etc … first on my list is an Indian head massage! My main aim for 2017 is to make my family and friends smile and laugh. If they’re happy, I’m happy. Lisa Marie Badham ........................................................ We all eat what we want over Christmas without feeling too guilty, because.. it’s Christmas and we’re just allowed to! But I’ve eaten enough food to keep me full for a year over the last few weeks, and now the holiday season is over, the eating needs to stop! I want to start 2017 a healthier person. 1. Start an exercise class and actually stick to it: I have been to many classes in the past, but I just don’t seem to stick at them long term. It’s not like I don’t enjoy the classes, I just always seem to drift away after a while. I think I need some time to think about which class I should start, because it’s important to find one that I enjoy so that I do stick to it. I always say i’m going to start going to the gym too, but funnily enough this has only happened once or twice... so this also needs to happen. I need to start looking after myself more! 2. Start eating healthier foods: People who know me know that I love a chocolate bar or two (or 20), so this will be a hard one to cut down on. I’m going to stop snacking in between meals, this is one of my bad habits. There needs to be less chocolate in my life and more fruit and veg! I need to get those 5 a days in somewhere… 3. Get more quality sleep: I’m addicted to my phone.. I’m always told that going on your phone before bed is so bad for your quality of sleep, but I just cant detach the thing from my hand! Every night I find myself lying in bed scrolling through Facebook. Apparently the radiation from the phone can cause insomnia and headaches as well as cutting the time spent in deep sleep, and the blue and white light stops your brain from thinking it’s nighttime! No going back now… it’s written in print! Nicole Williams

Buying & Selling Property/Land 1. What is Conveyancing? Conveyancing is the process through which the ownership of a property, land or both is transferred from one person or company to another. Transfers of property or land must be made by a legal document known as a Transfer 2. How long does the Conveyancing process take? It is difficult to give an exact time as this depends on various circumstances, such as your mortgage offer, length of chain, issues with the property... it can take anything between four to twelve weeks.

Industrial, Commercial & Domestic Installations Fire Alarms & Emergency Lighting

3. Will I need a Survey? A Survey is a detailed report on the state and condition of the property itself and provides a more detailed report of a Property. The Lender will not normally require a Survey and if that is the case, it is a matter for you, the Buyer, as to whether you want to have a survey undertaken or not. We recommend a Homebuyers Report is obtained as this will see the property analysed in greater detail. 4. What is an “exchange”? An exchange of contracts is when every person in the chain is happy with their respective contracts and are ready to ‘swap’ contracts with their Buyer or Sellers solicitors. This can take place when everyone in the chain is ready to exchange and the completion date has been agreed by all. Up until formal exchange of contracts you can withdraw from a transaction. Once you have exchanged however, you are contractually bound to complete on the agreed completion date.

Contact

01685 871114 07716 246785 mike-ames@btconnect.com

5.What does “completion” mean? Completion is when the money is paid for the property and the property changes hands. On this day, title to the property is transferred by the seller and the buyer takes possession of the property and the keys. 6. How do I get/leave the keys to my property? The keys are usually left with the estate agent and the buyer will collect them on the day of completion when informed to do so by his Conveyancer. Article written by Janet Timothy

New Year’s Eve DIY for Kids

Party Blowers These handmade party blowers are as much fun to create as they are to use. For a paper tongue that will curl properly, choose a decorative paper that is about the same weight as photocopy paper.

Supplies Plastic straw Vellum Double-sided sheet adhesive

remove the second protective backing. Curl the vellum strip around the straw, and mark the point where one long end of the strip contacts the other. Cut the strip at the mark, marking it just the right width to cover the straw. Remove the protective backing from the adhesive, and slowly and evenly roll the vellum onto the straw, smoothing out any bubbles as you go. 2. Cut a 2-by-10-inch rectangle of decorative paper for the tongue. Fold the long sides of the paper in to meet along the centre. Cover the seam with a length of clear tape, then fold over about 1/4 inch of one end, and fix it with tape. When taping seams, keep in mind that when finished, the tube will need to be airtight. Starting at the sealed end, roll the tongue tightly around a pencil, and wrap a rubber band around it to keep it coiled. Leave the rubber band wrapped around the tongue for at least a day. 3. Remove the rubber band from the tongue, which should remain coiled. Fold in the corners of the open end. 4. Dab a little white glue on the interiors of the folds and inside the opening. Slip the vellum-covered stem into the tongue. Apply pressure until the glue dries, and cover the joint with a piece of decorative tape.

Confetti Balloon At the stroke of midnight, you and your guests can pop the balloons to ignite a confetti explosion! Or if you are hosting a Mardi Gras party it’s the perfect showstopper.

Supplies

Less than 1/4 cup of foil confetti for each balloon

Decorative paper Clear tape

Balloons

Pencil

Ribbon

Rubber band

Helium

Instructions

Decorative tape

Instructions 1. To make the stem, cut a straw to measure 6 inches long. Cut a 2-inch-wide strip of vellum to the same length, and cut double-sided sheet adhesive to the same size. Apply adhesive to vellum, but do not

Prior to inflating, put some foil confetti inside each balloon. For the balloons to float, you have to use less than a 1/4 cup of confetti inside each one. However, if you use more than 1/4 cup of confetti, you can set the balloons upside-down on a flat surface, and they will stand up and still look very festive.
