Competition: (Winner of January Competition: Eleanor Williams, Sennybridge)

Just before Christmas, which seems so long ago now, my team and I were all sat around enjoying a great festive feast. We start talking work! Discussing new features for our monthly magazines. One topic was how many of us have friends who may be widowed, divorced or single and wouldn’t it be great if we could be the link to these people meeting up. Social media works well but if you’re from a generation that didn’t grow up with internet dating and the more recent Tinder, a more traditional way of pen to paper would be the preferred option. Please turn to page 27 to see how we’d like to make these connections. Please don’t feel alone, rest assured there are many local people in our area that are looking for companionship, meeting up with people with similar interests. Encourage your friends and family to take part. New businesses join us this month. MJH Tiling and Construction, Rent a Husband, Just Wood - all on page 2. Wye Pads, page 13. Please show them your support. Just recently, Laura popped into Dugan’s Patisserie. What a great asset this is for Brecon. Turn to page 16 & 17 for a read of the review. And those pictures speak for themselves. It really does look divine. I can’t wait to pay a visit myself. We’ve introduced a Crossword this issue. Puzzle lovers turn to page 24 & 25. Don’t forget our local landscape photography competition is in full swing. You have until the end of March to send us your entries. We live in a beautiful part of the world. We really are blessed. Share your images with us. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: James, Cariad and Otis Badham)

For the chance to win 1 month’s membership at SMB Fitness, please complete the word search on page 25 and send to us by 16th February 2017. The winner will be picked at random.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Over the last twenty years cities such as Cardiff, Swansea and Newport have received hundreds of millions in investment from the Welsh Government. The Valleys have received substantial grants and funding to revitalise their transport network and town centres. But what about rural Wales?

All Work Fully Insured Domestic and Commercial NEWPORT • CARDIFF • BRIDGEND • SWANSEA THE VALLEYS BRECON • ABERGAVENNY • MONMOUTH Get Your Guttering Cleaned Ready for Winter

Rural towns across my constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire have seen drastic changes in recent years. The rise of online shopping, investment in towns such as Hereford and Merthyr has attracted locals to shop there instead of their local towns. And what investment are we receiving from the Welsh Government? Very little. But it does not have to be this way, our towns do not have to suffer from continual economic stagnation. I will continue to push for a better deal for our rural communities in parliament and my Conservative Assembly Members will push for the Welsh Government to increase investment in rural Wales, as they have done in their Labour voting heartlands over the last twenty years. There are many things that we can all do in order to address the issues our rural communities face. There are many rural communities in Brecon and Radnorshire who have a small voice, but if we can work together then the louder our voice will be. I would encourage anyone who feels they have the time and passion to get involved at a local level, this could be joining your local Chamber ofTrade. The Brecon chamber of trade is a fine example, they relaunched in 2016 and are campaigning on various local issues to improve Brecon town centre and the conditions for workers in the town. Alternatively individuals could stand for local council, or run a local community group/charity. All of these organisations have a major impact on how our communities are run, and many of them consist of the same people with the same stale, unambitious ideas for our committees for decades. We need ambitious, talented individuals who care about our community to roll their sleeves up and get involved. If you do wish to get involved then please do! My office is open to you to provide support or advice. Feel free to contact me at – chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

When we - or a friend or member of our family get ill, we want to be sure that they have access to the latest and most effective medicines, regardless of where people live. This is an issue I have been campaigning on for a number of years. So I am very pleased to say that the Welsh Government is bringing forward an £80 million “New Treatments Fund”. The money will help ensure that Welsh health boards to make all new medicines recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) available faster and more consistently across Wales. The Welsh Liberal Democrats have been calling for a fund like this for a number of years and a similar scheme formed part of our 2016 election manifesto, so I am very pleased one is now being brought forward.

Are you a keen photographer who has a passion for our local surroundings?

Then this competition is right for you . . . turn to page 38 for more details

Another recent announcement that may be of interest to readers is the new £40 million small grants scheme for farmers. The scheme, which has been developed with farmers unions, will provide financial support of up to £12,000 at a 40% grant rate over a fouryear period. Farmers across Wales will be able to invest in around 80 items linked to: Stock handling equipment, animal health, genetics and performance, crop management, energy efficiency and IT. My party and I are passionate about protecting our proud farming tradition in order to safeguard food security, look after the landscape and natural environment. That is why the introduction of this scheme was a condition of me accepting the invitation to join the government. The scheme is due to open in April and I would urge all farmers in Brecon and Radnorshire to take a look at the scheme to see if it could help their business. If you would like to discuss these, or any other, issues with me, please contact me at Kirsty.williams@ assembly.wales, or call my office on 01874 625 739.

Caring for cats!

Gwynfe Cat Welfare has been operating for over 20 years and have two charity shops, one in Castle street, Brecon and one in Llandovery. They are a non-profit charity and solely run by volunteers so all the money raised goes on our vet bills and the care of the cats in the sanctuary. Gwynfe’s main aim is to neuter as many cats and kittens as possible. Each year, thousands of cats find themselves in animal shelters, with others abandoned on the streets. Not only can neutering help reduce these numbers but it can prevent illnesses such as FIV leukaemia and cat flu as well as some unwanted behaviours. One of the most important things to do as a responsible cat owner is to make sure your cat is neutered. Even if you have a male cat, you should be just as responsible. Get him neutered and he won’t be able to impregnate all the local female cats! There are also other benefits, not only for your cat but for you too! It’s best for cats to be neutered as soon as they are old enough for the procedure, cats can become sexually mature from as young as four months. Owners don’t always know when their female cat has gone into their first season so they can get pregnant accidentally.

Gwynfe recommend cats should be neutered when they are four to five months old, after they have completed their primary vaccinations. All cats are different so it is best to talk to your vet about your individual cat. Did you know? One female cats could produce around 18 kittens per year or be responsible for 20,000 descendants over five years! Gwynfe Cat Welfare offers free neutering for all feral/farm cats and reduced rates of a £20 donation for your pet cat/kitten. This offer is only available at Honddu vets Brecon and Teilo vets in Llandeilo. They rely heavily on donations, whether that’s items to sell in their shops, cash donations, or food and items such as towels and scratching posts for the cats. To contact the charity, find their group on Facebook.

WINTER JASMINE An exciting deciduous shrub for the colder months, winter jasmine brightens any border with its pretty yellow flowers on arching sprays of growth. Jasminum nudiflorum is usually grown as a scrambling climber with an eventual height and spread of 2.5m (8ft). It ordinates from northern China and was named for its flowers which appear before its leaves – nudiflorum means ‘naked flower’. It is a slender shrub with arching green shoots. The pinnate, dark green leaves contrast against the electric yellow flowers, borne singly at axils of previous year’s growth from late October to March. With this year’s mild weather, we expect flowering to peak - and pretty much finish - in February. Winter jasmine is a full hardy shrub, which grows in fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun will ensure best flowering but it will tolerate tough conditions, such as a north facing wall or part shade. Allowed to scramble freely over a low wall it will not need any support, however when grown as a climber it will need to be trained on a trellis or wires as it is not self-clinging. Deciduous winter flowering shrubs require annual pruning to keep growth strong and healthy. Winter jasmine is in pruning group two and should be pruned immediately after flowering. Old, established plants can be rejuvenated by removing one third of the oldest growth to ground level. Unpruned plants tend to become woody and matted with old dead stems. Fall in love at your Library... Fall in love at your Library. Spring is almost here, and romance is in the air. Brecon Library has a few recommendations to get you that lovin’ feeling! It’s universally acknowledged that librarians are bitterly divided about the merits of Austen vs. Bronte(s), so they’ll suggest both Jane Austen’s Persuasion and Charlotte Bronte’s Villette as classics you might not have read. If those are familiar friends, do try Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Julia Quinn or Diana Gabaldon (you might have watched the adaptation of her series, Outlander) as authors of some excellent historical romance - with a touch of humour. Does your idea of a romantic read involve the demolishing of a box of tissues? Try John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars – you’ll smile while you sob! Alternatively, stick to the tried and tested, with a Nicolas Sparks novel – the author of stories like The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and Nights in Rodanthe knows how to spin a yarn, selling over 89 million books.

Alternatively, as inspiration for dinner for two, can we suggest Mary Berry? Not only a great British baker, she’s written some marvellous cook books over her 40 year career – with pretty much fool proof recipes! Still haven’t found your perfect match? Just ask your librarian – they’re the ultimate literary personal shoppers!

WyePads to the rescue! Got an iPad? How are you getting on with it? Mastered the basics but lack the confidence to do more? Or are you feeling all at sea – perhaps terrified to use it? Alison Matthews has been helping people use computers for over 30 years and her sell-out 2016 iPad courses were a huge success. “To see people who’ve never used a computer before send and receive their first email is incredibly rewarding,” she says. “People loved the slow, relaxed pace of the classes, and the weekly handouts mean they go home with all the details of what was covered.” Three new classes start the week beginning Monday 13th February. Total Beginners, for those who’ve never used a computer before; Beginners Plus, for those familiar with email and the internet; and Build on the Basics, for those who want to get a bit more from their iPad.

Number of firsttime buyers leaps to highest level since the financial crisis Bumper numbers of first-time buyers climbed onto the property ladder last year, forking out more than the average household income to do so, new figures suggest. More first-time buyers bought a home in 2016 than in any year since 2007, before the global financial crisis hit, research from Halifax shows. However, would-be owners now typically raise £32,321 for a deposit – more than double the £15,168 needed a decade ago, and this doesn’t include moving costs such as stamp duty and solicitor fees.

Halifax says those purchasing their first property paid an average of £205,170 last year, the highest on record and seven per cent higher than 2015. In London, it was an ‘eye-watering’ £402,692, according to one of Britain’s biggest lenders. It means the typical deposit in the capital was £100,445. As the cost of housing has increased, first-time buyers have also been taking out longer mortgages. In 2006, just 36 per cent had mortgages lasting beyond the traditional 25-year period. In 2016, 60 per cent of mortgages were for 25 years or more. Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said record low mortgage rates, high employment levels and government schemes such as Help to Buy – which ended last year - have helped firsttime buyer numbers. It’s likely The Bank of Mum and Dad has also played a role in higher first-time buyer numbers given deposit levels. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

REVIEW

“Relaxed and extremely tasty”

Tucked away on Pegasus Lane, Dugan’s Patisserie is a real little gem for Brecon. Previously known as Love Patisserie, Dugan’s have been selling their cakes and tarts throughout south Wales, Herefordshire and Shropshire for years, and opened their shop last November. We arrived for a late lunch on a Saturday. As soon as you go in your eye is immediately drawn to the cakes, brownies and tarts laid out enticingly on the counter! There were plenty of happy diners, but we only had to wait a moment for a table, which gave us a little opportunity to take in all the lovely quirkiness of the shop and all it had to offer. The shop sells loaves of award-winning Artisan baker Alex Gooch’s bread as well as a range of flours, jams and other yummies, and some gorgeous looking kitchen utensils. One of my boys,Tom, had the pleasure of joining me for lunch. He chose apple juice (locally sourced, and from a choice of five different blends), a cheese sandwich and an apple and cinnamon strudel. I ordered an Americano, and managed to nab the last cheese and leek tartlet and slice of pear and almond tart, made with Dugan’s famous frangipane pastry. Both the sandwich and the tartlet were served with beautifully fresh salad and chutney. Everything

was absolutely delicious, and very well presented on pretty vintage plates.Tom’s sandwich was made using Alex Gooch’s white bread. It certainly passed Tom’s taste test and was made very short work of; I didn’t get a bite! He did let me try his strudel though, which was light, flaky and absolutely packed full of apples. Tom then stole some of my tartlet, something he wouldn’t usually try, and I had to fight him for the rest.Things almost turned ugly over the wonderful pear and almond tart. With extra seating being added upstairs and lunches recently added to the menu, as well as plans afoot to soon serve Viennese style breakfasts and open a shop in Ludlow, the owners have got plenty of plans to build on their business. Our lunch was relaxed and extremely tasty. Dugan’s Patisserie really felt like something out of the ordinary, and I imagine people would travel quite some way to visit, how lucky are Brecon-ites to have this on our doorstep? So go on, treat yourself to a trip to Dugan’s Patisserie; you deserve it! Article written by Laura Williams

Lime Kilns Along the Canal When you walk along the Canal, just past Brecon Rugby Ground, take the road rather than the canal bank. You will pass the recently renovated lime kilns. The kilns were used to burn limestone to create quicklime which had many uses including lime mortar for building and fertiliser to spread on the fields. The kilns generally have an egg cup shaped chamber at the top which led down to an air inlet at the bottom. This can be seen by looking in through the arch. The Brecon kilns were constructed so they could be loaded with layers of coal and limestone from the top straight from the canal bank. A fire was lit at the bottom of the kiln and the fire gradually burned up through the layers. When burning was complete the quicklime was raked out at the base and could then be carted away. All the work on the kilns would have been done by hand – including digging out the quicklime at the bottom of the chamber. This would have been particularly unpleasant as when quicklime touches wet skin it burns so the men had to work covered in cloths and sacks and wear masks to keep the dust from their lungs. www.blfhs.co.uk

More openings at Llansantffraed Many of us know of Llansantffraed Church as the rather isolated building alongside the A40 at the Talybont-onUsk turning. Far fewer have been inside this Victorian architectural gem or visited the grave of Henry Vaughan, Breconshire’s renowned poet, in the churchyard. The Friends of Llansantffraed Church are helping the Church Committee to open the building more often to visitors and to broaden its use as a venue with an excellent acoustic for concerts, recitals and talks. A Potpourri of Music and Words will be presented on Saturday 11th March by the acclaimed harpist Elinor Bennett and performance poet Jeff Rees. They perform together as ‘Rhythm and Rhyme’ with a wide repertoire of music, poetry and song. The programme will have some Welsh flavours including works for the harp by John Parry, John Thomas and William Mathias, and Welsh folk songs. Jeff Rees will span the centuries with poetry including some with harp accompaniment, some of his own work, and some linked to Henry Vaughan. Proceeds from the concert will help to maintain Llansantffraed Church. At the end of April 2017, a new Henry Vaughan Visitor Area will be completed in the church where visitors will be able to find information about Henry Vaughan, his work as a poet and physician in 17th century Breconshire, his links with the locality, and the inspiration he drew from nature and landscape in the Brecon Beacons. To book tickets for the March concert, contact Mervyn Bramley on 01874 665267 or email: mervyn.bramley@icloud.com. For more information about Llansantffraed Church opening days and its Henry Vaughan heritage - see the Brecknock Society’s website www.brecknocksociety.co.uk

Make your own Rainmaker!

This homemade Rainmaker is a fun way to make lots of noise at a celebration such as a birthday - or just for a kitchen band!

You will need:

To make:

• A snack tube or a long cardboard tube (such as used for kitchen foil)

Paint your tube and leave to dry. Decorate the tube with sequins and glitter.

• Glue

Fill the tube about 1/5 full of rice or lentils and glue the lid on securely. If you are using a kitchen foil tube, you will need to cut circles of card or paper and fix them very securely over each end.

• Lentils or rice

Tip the tube from side to side to hear the rice fall.

• Paint (gold or silver) • Glitter and sequins

A fun romance you won’t want to put down! Romance writer Bronte Huntington has vowed she will never settle for anything less than ‘the one.’ When pleasant red-haired dentist Ryan moves in next door he just doesn’t fit the bill. They have plenty in common but Bronte wants nothing more than friendship with him.

Then it looks like Bronte’s dreams have finally come true when dashing Sebastian Fairfax rescues her on his horse after she has an accident in the countryside around her idyllic little cottage. Sebastian is tall, dark, handsome, and heir to a massive country estate! But is Sebastian the one? Or will Bronte’s romantic dreams of the perfect hero turn out to be as fictional as her novels? And will Bronte’s temperamental cat ever stop getting in the way?! “I’m a big fan of Emma Bennet’s books. I often imagine this local author tucked away, typing each romance

novel. It makes my reading more interesting I think. This book took a little longer to get into than her others. But when I did, it was a joy to read. I love a fairy tale ending and with this book I didn’t know if that’s what I’d get. The characters were very different, all described extremely well so my imagination created certain voices in my head that each person would say. Emma’s books are a shorter read than most so I would highly recommend you get a copy ready for a rainy day in February. A good, easy read ... but does it have the ending you’d hoped for?” Lisa Marie Badham

Time for change? At this time of year many couples ask for advice about separation and divorce. Sadly, the Christmas period can be one of the busiest times of year for family lawyers and, whilst it is largely a myth that January traditionally sees separated couples beating down the doors of solicitors’ offices, it is certainly true that the pressures of the festive period can be a catalyst in taking that final step. Clients have usually thought long and hard about separation before seeing a lawyer and I am increasingly seeing people who have been separated for several years before taking any legal steps. Whilst this is understandable because of the emotional turmoil often involved, it can be a serious mistake, especially when there are significant assets to be divided or spousal maintenance should be considered. When a marriage has irretrievably broken down with no prospect of reconciliation, it is advisable to begin divorce proceedings at the earliest opportunity. One of the main factors taken into account by the Court when determining how assets should be divided is the length of the marriage. What would have been considered a short or medium length marriage when I first began practising is now more likely to be seen as a lengthy marriage and the longer the marriage, the less likely you are to achieve anything other than an equal division of the assets. In the same way, the longer a separated spouse is maintained following separation the greater the prospects of succeeding in a claim for ongoing maintenance. Timing, as they say, is everything and it is certainly important when bringing a relationship to an appropriate end. A local specialist family lawyer will be well placed to advise you whatever your circumstances so if it’s time to embark on the first day of the rest of your life, make sure you have someone to gently but firmly guide you through the process; it’s too important a step to mistime your exit. Wild in February

Protecting wildlife for the future

returns. Mid February is a better time to see the flowering parts of these common woodland trees. The familiar catkins come out in abundance a little earlier than the tiny female flowers which catch pollen brought to them on the wind. Look carefully at buds for the red bits. The picture is from Llandefaelog Wood Nature Reserve.

Corylus Avellana Hazel We saw a female Hazel flower during the New Year Plant Hunt on 4th January – but it was only just poking out the red styles. There were more male, actively pollen shedding, catkins so the species qualified for being recorded as flowering in the hunt

There is another opportunity to learn about hedgelaying at Cae Pwll y Bo Reserve on the 21st and on the 24th there are two events in different parts of the county. The Tree ID walk at Ystradfawr reserve in Ystradgynlais is a great opportunity to learn how to identify tress from buds and bark in the winter. The Wildlife Watch Family Event in Hay at the opposite end of the county includes craft activities and a nature walk. For more detail and who to contact for all these events go online to bit. ly/bwtevents. John Crellin

In a community deep with tradition, where female genital mutilation (FGM) is still a rite of passage, these young Maasai express their frustrations at inequality by smacking cricket balls on the plains of Kenya and dreaming of life beyond their own village. Thus begins a journey all the way to England; the home of cricket. It is a journey which gives the Warriors the courage to face their elders in the hope of ending FGM. £6 admission.
