News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
I am over the moon that the Brecon Jazz festival will be going ahead once again this summer. A report conducted by Independent music consultant Nod Knowles, which was commissioned by Brecon Town Council, came to the conclusion that the festival had “reached the end of its life. Many options have been discussed to rescue the Brecon Jazz Festival which has seen a demise in recent years. The Brecon Jazz festival is a much loved and well known event, not just in Brecon and Radnorshire, but across the UK. I am very pleased the Jazz will go ahead this year because it is a vital source of income for many businesses in Brecon; many of whom rely on the festival to see them through quieter periods of the year. The festival is looking to make changes and I believe it must do so to survive. In the past few years the Brecon Fringe Festival has become a popular event and if this were to properly combine with the Jazz Festival it could help guarantee the festival’s future. I believe there is huge scope for an expansion in the cultural element of the festival, it would be great to see speakers from across the globe attending and many more businesses having stalls around town throughout the weekend. We should aim to make the Jazz weekend an event open to all, with something for everyone. Attracting food, music and culture lovers from all over the world. I look forward to attending personally and enjoying the festival like atmosphere in Brecon on the Jazz weekend!

Newss from
Kirsty Williams
Jobs and the economy are one of my top priorities for 2017. I recently had a very positive meeting with Brecon Town Council, Brecon Chamber of Trade, Cllr Sam Bennett and others to discuss how we could all help improve the prosperity of the town. People were concerned about empty business properties and the need to regenerate the high street. I am very pleased the Welsh Government has recently announced that a £10 million fund to help bring empty, underused sites and shops in town centres back into use. The money is being allocated to twelve areas of Wales, including Powys. As well as making town centres more attractive places to live this scheme will encourage investment into these areas and help support the local economy. Other issues that came up at the meeting included parking and street cleaning.

Parking is an issue the Welsh Liberal Democrats have been campaigning on for some time. This year’s Welsh Government budget contained a commitment for a £3million scheme to allow councils to provide free parking for town centres. I hope Powys County Council (PCC) makes the most of this scheme when the money becomes available, as it could provide a real boost to local shops. Whilst street cleaning is the responsibility of Powys County Council, there is something you can do to help keep Brecon tidy. Plan Brecon meet at 10am in the Watergate car park on the first Sunday of the month. I can assure anyone who goes along that they will meet some lovely people and have a tremendous sense of achievement and community spirit when you see how clean the pavements, paths and riverbanks are after a couple of hours work. I am always interested to hear local resident’s views on how we could improve our town centres, if you have any thoughts, please get in touch so I can feed your ideas into future meetings. You can email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales, or call my office on 01874 625 739.

THE DAFFODIL (NARCISSUS) “Daffodils, that come before the swallow dares and take the winds of March with Beauty” Shakespeare. Is there anything better for Spring than the cheerful blooms of the Daffodil working their magic in so many parts of the garden? Easy to grow and flowering year after year Daffodils come in all sizes, several colours and different varieties, flowering over a long period from January to April. Dwarf varieties such as the multi-headed ‘Tete a Tete’ work really well in pots, baskets, in a rockery or under trees and shrubs. Larger varieties make a bold statement in beds and borders. Daffodils will grow in most soils and thrive best in sun or shade. If you missed out on planting your bulbs last autumn your local garden centre will have pot grown plants for planting out now. They should be allowed to die down naturally and fed as the flowers finish so they build up energy for flowering the following year. So transform your garden with a much needed fanfare of colour in the early part of the gardening season and don’t forget that Daffodils also work brilliantly with other spring bulbs, Primroses, Wood Anemones and flowering shrubs such as Forsythia. Reflexology...
Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary therapy based on the theory that different points (reflexes) on the feet, hands, face or ears correspond to all the different areas of the body including every system of the body, organs & glands. Reflexologists believe that by applying gentle pressure to these reflex points imbalances in the body may be detected, relieving blockages and encouraging the free flow of energy to be restored to the body. The treatment induces a deep state of relaxation relieving tension & helping to alleviate physical & mental stress: circulation can be assisted and elimination improved. Reflexology is a holistic therapy, treating the whole of the person and not just the symptoms of illness and dis-ease. The benefits of Reflexology can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. “The only way to know if Reflexology will help you is to try it” Improved well-being is much more than simply the absence of illness; it also includes an improved frame of mind, better relationships with those around you and increased happiness.

Further pain for savers to be laid bare by figures showing inflation at its highest level in almost 3 years
INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE
“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING F MORTGAGES
The misery facing savers will be laid bare this week by figures showing inflation has raced to its highest level in almost three years. Millions of prudent savers have been penalised with poor returns on their nest eggs since the financial crisis due to record low interest rates set by the Bank of England. The average cash ISA savings rate now stands at 0.4 per cent according to recent figures. NS&I have also announced that the amount of prize money paid on their popular Premium Bonds will reduce again, from 1st May the rate will be reduced from 1.25 per cent to 1.15 per cent. That pain was eased somewhat by ultra-low levels of inflation throughout 2015 and 2016 when the cost of living was barely rising. But inflation has soared sharply in recent months, hitting 1.6 per cent in December, as a higher oil price pushes up prices at the pumps and the weak pound makes imported goods more expensive. Analysts believe figures published by the Office for National Statistics will show inflation hit 1.9 per cent in January – its highest level since June 2014. By the end of 2017 inflation is expected to hit 3 per cent.

Just 44 of 669 savings accounts on the market can beat or match inflation, according to the latest figures from financial data firm Moneyfacts, which means the value of cash put aside will fall rather than rise – squeezing household budgets and hitting living standards.

Llanfaes from before 1535 when it was destroyed by a flood.
The bridge was replaced in 1563 but
this was only one of many replacements and repairs that have been recorded over the centuries. The flood in 1708 was described as “the greatest flood in Uske that was ever knowne”. Another flood in 1853 is remembered on a stone plaque at the bottom of Ship Street showing the height of the water. Many houses in Llanfaes were regularly flooded and the shopkeepers complained that they suffered from the loss of goods – and trade. Gradually high walls and earth embankments have been built to keep the river away from houses. However, a reminder of the power of the river can be seen when the waters rise to flow over the footpath along The Promenade leaving mud and debris. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

A new way of buying food!
A new way of buying food has launched in Talybont on Usk, bringing together food-loving members from the area and surrounding villages to buy fresh local food directly from local farmers and producers, in a weekly community food hub. Every weekTalybont on Usk Food Assembly customers can order quality food online from a varied and ever evolving catalogue of local products that changes with the seasons, before picking up their order, once a week on Mondays, at Henderson Hall. All the food comes from less than 28 miles away, and most producers are within a 15 mile radius of the village. Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly – it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the local communities of Talybont on Usk, Brecon and the surrounding villages, as for every £1 spent through Talybont on Usk Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy. It also ensures your money reaches the right people; food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to just 15%-25% on average through supermarkets, so the more you buy from the Food Assembly, the more the producers take home. Importantly, there is also less food waste as all the food is ordered in advance, producers know exactly what to bring to each collection, and as the food is mostly fresh and picked/baked/made to order, it promotes a healthier way of eating too. It offers easy access to fresh, quality produce through a convenient user friendly online system and direct contact with the people who produce your food at the weekly collections. Whether from your iPhone app or laptop, weekly shoppers can choose from unique local products from a fantastic pool of producers featuring: organically grown heirloom vegetables, orchard fruits, edible flowers and home-made preserves, ketchups and cordials from The Kitchen Garden at Ty Mawr, Llangasty; quality meat, poultry, pork pies and Welsh honey from East’s of Brecon, Heol Draw Home Farm; small batch roasted coffee and a delicious espresso martini chocolate bar from Black Mountain Roast, Hay on Wye; fresh and earthy organic vegetables, fruit and herbs from
Primrose Organic Farm, Velindre; incredible bakedto-order breads and giant tea-cakes from Caroline’s Real Bread at the Old Vicarage Bakery, Merthyr Cynog; fresh whole and filleted fish from The Fish Shack at Vin Sullivan Foods, Blaenavon, who also supply a selection of local Welsh and Neal’s Yard Creamery cheeses; and hand-made fresh pasta featuring locally grown and sourced fillings from Nonna Caterina Fresh Pasta, Glasbury. With more producers being approached and added soon to grow the range of products available. Talybont on Usk Food Assembly is organised and hosted by Ceri and Jon Elms, who live in the village, and are passionate about improving access to local food, and about food in general. “The Talybont on Usk Food Assembly launched on Monday 23rd January 2017 at Henderson Hall with plenty of delicious food samples, our complimentary homemade cakes, tea, coffee, music and neighbours coming together in a friendly community space to shop local, and enthusiastically find out more about the amazing local produce that is grown, made, reared and baked all around us. We had a hugely positive response and the evening was filled with people sharing food stories and experiences which was just as we had hoped! We have over 145 members already and our online catalogue opens every Tuesday where you can browse and buy and then collect your order from our weekly collection event every Monday from 5-7pm at Henderson Hall. Locals can meet farmers, foodmakers and their neighbours, collect their freshly baked, made, picked or packed produce, and there will be regular tastings and food events coming soon. To become a member and be able to shop online, please sign up here (its free and easy with no obligations to buy): https://foodassembly.com/en/assemblies/9057 And if you are a local producer interested in bringing your produce to our Assembly, we would love to hear from you so please contact us at tboufoodassembly@gmail.com”.

A masterpiece!
Brecknock Sinfonia’s spring concert has at its centre one of the most passionate symphonies ever written, Tchaikovsky’s Sixth, often known by the name bestowed on it by the composer’s brother, the ‘Pathétique’. Written in his last year of life, the symphony was very much a personal statement of Tchaikovsky’s own emotional state of heightened feelings and frustrations. Sweeping romantic melodies and rich orchestral colours fill the work, and the expanded ranks of Brecknock Sinfonia will offer a memorable musical experience. Brahms is often seen as the opposite of Tchaikovsky but his Hungarian Dances show a lighter side to his music. Folk melodies are given a deft orchestral touch but keep their swing and verve. The original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer remembered for his opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Intended for children, it has appealing tunes but also catches the menace of the gloomy forest and these are all present in the overture. To complete the programme Brecknock Sinfonia plays a gently beautiful English miniature, Gerald Finzi’s ‘Romance’.

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) Q: Can a kangaroo jump higher than the Empire State Building? A: Of course. The Empire State Building can’t jump. Instead of “the John,” I call my toilet “the Jim.” That way it sounds better when I say I go to the Jim first thing every morning. My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.

Buying and Selling Property Once you have agreed a sale or purchase with the Agents you then need a Conveyancer to transfer the legal ownership of the property. On any sale and/or a purchase of a property there will be a number of people we will need to deal with to get information, documents or permissions to and from. A chain is created when there is more than one buyer and one seller involved - e.g. you are selling to someone who in turn is selling to someone else. You may also, at the same time, be buying a property from someone who is also buying and selling to someone else. A chain, especially a long chain of transactions, can make things a little slower because everyone in the chain has got to get their own transaction ready, and they all have to wait for each other to come up to speed. Finally when everyone is ready, the act of agreeing a date to complete and actually move house, can be a little fraught with the various people up and down the chain all having to agree the same date to complete whilst each having their own preferred dates or agendas that they want to follow; but a date has to be set (and usually is) that can please, or at least be agreed upon, by everyone. It only takes one of the people in the link of the chain to be inefficient, disorganised, or unhelpful and this can delay a whole transaction. Each link in a chain of transactions are also dealing with lots of other people. We have had transactions that have completed in less than a week, and also ones that have taken a lot longer. If there are no hold ups and everything is straight forward, the process can take as little as 3 – 4 weeks. However, most transactions realistically take approximately 6 – 8 weeks

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in March
Other places to find it include Lockwood Island on the north coast of Greenland (the most northerly plant locality in the world) and at a record 4505 metres height in the Swiss Alps. So, cold as the Beacons can be, here it basks in relative warmth compared to some of its relatives. It is one of the species that South Wales could eventually lose to global warming but meanwhile it is good to know that cultivated forms of this flower are available for that cold corner of the garden.
Saxifraga Oppositifolia This attractive flower can be glimpsed in March if you know where to look but it tends to favour the most inaccessible places on the Beacons such as the north face of Pen y Fan or Cribyn. It is a remarkable plant that may well be the most coldtolerant flowering vascular plant.
This month you can explore the ancient woodlands of Dyfryn Crawnon on the 2nd as part of the Crickhowell Walking Festival. (Book at bit.ly/ crickwalk) There are work parties at Wern Plemys (Ystradgynlais) on the 3rd and 24th and Coed Dyrisiog on the 28th. Keith Noble is giving a talk on The Galapagos Islands on the 31st at Talybont. For full details of these go to bit.ly/BWTdiary John Crellin
