News from Chris Davies

Pwllgloyw Arms

-Your local MP

Commission Charge on Park Homes: In recent months I’ve met with various park home owners across Radnorshire and they are running a fantastic campaign to pressure the Welsh Government into scrapping the 10% commission charge on the sale of park homes. Two weeks ago local councillor for Disserth and Trecoed – Gwilym Price took a coach load of campaigners to campaign outside the Assembly. Whilst at the same time I spoke at a rally of over 250 people in Portcullis House to discuss how this campaign can be won if they apply the right amount of pressure on those in Westminster and the devolved Assemblies. The Welsh Assembly Government has now been pressured into holding a consultation on the issue. So our pressure is paying off! Brecon Barracks update: In March I hosted the Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Fallon MP to Brecon Barracks and Sennybridge Army Camp. Mr Fallon was on a visit as part of his role in Her Majesty’s Government and I wanted to use his visit as a chance to discuss the proposed closure of Brecon Barracks. I used the occasion to discuss the proposed closure with Mr Fallon and used my knowledge of the area to convince him of the Barracks importance within the local community. I have met various people both in Brecon and Radnorshire and at Westminster to lobby for the Barracks to remain open, as well as running a petition which currently has over 1000 signatures. This petition can be found on my website. Bringing Brecon and Radnorshire to Westminster: When elected my aim as your MP was to bring Brecon and Radnorshire to Westminster, not to bring Westminster to Brecon and Radnorshire. I have used my time in parliament to champion our local community by pushing our agenda on issues such as improving rural broadband, fighting for affordable housing and promoting our rural way of life. I am extremely proud to represent the people of Brecon and Radnorshire and meet with constituents on a regular basis. We discuss both national and local issues and I endeavour to help all those who visit me to the best of my ability. If you would like to raise any local or national issues with me then please contact my office on 01982 559180.

Newss from

The Giddy

Kirsty Williams

On the 4th of May you will have an opportunity to shape the future of Powys County Council. When I speak to local people, the message is clear, the council being led by Independent councillors is not working. The controlling group have no vision for the county, cannot agree among themselves and cannot control the budget to protect front line services. A recent example of this was the decision to change the recycling centre opening hours across Powys. The decision is already proving to be extremely harmful, with people being turned away from the centres and concerns it will cause an increase in fly-tipping. A Liberal Democrat Council will be a strong voice for Powys, providing the leadership the Council needs, putting power in hands of local communities and ensuring the Council works better for Powys people.

Having a group of experienced, determined Liberal Democrat Councillors representing areas from all over the County will mean that policies are coordinated, thoughtful and consistent. Our team of candidates have a plan to boost the prosperity of our towns, including free parking for short stays. They will make a stronger road safety partnership to cut deaths and serious injuries on Powys roads, and make the council more accountable by reducing the number of councillors and allowing the public to speak at council meetings. Our candidates are committed to providing best local service to their ward and area – but also commit to work together as a group for whole of the County. Independent Councillors not able to make that promise.

the will the are

Now is the time to restore the credibility of Powys County Council and a strong body of Welsh Lib Dem councillors will do just that.

Awarded £25,000 Citizens Advice Powys is celebrating being awarded £25,000 through the Martin Lewis Fund that will help make a real difference to local people’s lives.

The funding award announced today will help to deliver a project that will provide more tailored support to people facing mental health problems in new ways which could be rolled out across other parts of the country. The project will offer advice on a range of subjects, including debt and welfare benefits, to members of local mental health services via digital platforms such as Skype. Citizens Advice Powys will be able to share its learning, and potentially encourage other local Citizens Advice to launch similar projects so that more people across England and Wales benefit. Muriel Ryan, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Powys said: “We are delighted to receive this award through the Martin Lewis Fund. This grant gives us the opportunity to run a project we have already tested with clients and have recognised can benefit local people with mental health difficulties.” Martin Lewis said: “Few realise Citizens Advice, which is at the bedrock of British society, is a charity not a government agency – a shame as the work it does is truly life saving. I’ve met many people who were suicidal over legal or money life challenges they couldn’t cope with, yet a visit to their local Citizens Advice put them on the path to dealing with it. As a huge fan of the organisation, I wanted to do something to help it pioneer new ways to reach out and improve people’s lives, and I’m excited to see where this takes us.”

Citizens Advice Powys is one of 25 local services across England and Wales to receive £25,000. The funding follows an initial award of £1,000 in September 2016 to test initial project ideas. The funding comes from a £1 million donation from Martin Lewis to Citizens Advice across the UK in 2015. Projects had to fit into categories including making people more digitally skilled, working closely with health and social care providers, and future opportunities for volunteers. Gardening Column

PELARGONIUMS - GERANIUMS The favourite windowsill plant of cottage gardens and grown widely in all gardens in summer. It’s so well known that it is hardly necessary to describe the large, ball-shaped heads of florets in a range of whites, pinks and reds, some with attractive markings on the petals. Many have two-colour zoning on the leaves and there are also variegated varieties. Pelargoniums are almost all tender, evergreen plants of South African origin. When introduced to Britain they were given the common name Geranium because of their similarity to the equally wonderful, but hardy Geraniums or Cranesbills, which are also a “must have” plant for all gardens. Pelargoniums are broadly divided into four main groups Zonal, Regal, Ivy Leaved or trailing and Scented leaved - showing how versatile the plants are. They are perfect for tubs, troughs, hanging baskets and bedding schemes in borders. Pelargoniums benefit from regular feeding, deadheading and watering and prefer an open, sunny site. On their own taking centre stage or planted with other summer plants such as Lobelia, Fuchsia and Petunia, they are worthy of a place in every garden. from the bent back sepals shown in the picture. Sepals are petal-like structures behind many flowers and are usually less colourful than the petals in front. Some of the fields near Offa’s Dyke path around Hay have great displays of this Buttercup at this time. The name ‘Buttercup’ seems to have come late as a name with ‘Crowfoot’ being the name used by early herbalists and botanists. ‘Butter-flower’ was also used as were ‘Kingkob’, ‘Gold cups’ and ‘Gilcup’. There are Botany Group Meetings near Bwlch on the 4th; at Cwm Oergwm on the 11th; near Hay on the 18th; at Pont ar Wysg on Saturday 20th and at Carno Wood on the 25th of the month.

Ranunculus Bulbosus Bulbous Buttercup There are several different species of Buttercup but the flowers are very similar in each. The two most common species like damp or wet grassland but Bulbous Buttercup prefers well-drained, dryer fields. As its name suggests, a bit of digging will reveal a bulb at the base of the stem but the species can easily be recognised

Volunteer work parties are planned to improve access at Ystradfawr Nature Reserve, Ystradgynlais on the 5th and 19th. For full details of these go to the Brecknock Wildlife Trust website: bit.ly/BWTdiary John Crellin

The Victoria Inn This photograph shows the Guildhall and buildings close to it in 1905. In the centre of the picture is Number 5 High Street Inferior, The Victoria Inn, which stood on the corner of Tredegar Street opposite the Guildhall. Tredegar Street was very narrow and soon after this picture was taken the decision was made to pull down the Victoria Inn and a shop next to it, Number 6 High Street Inferior, to widen the street. Part of the plot was used to build a new bank. There was a newspaper announcement that the London City and Midland Bank were opening for business in Brecon in 1911. The Bank Manager, Mr John Williams, is shown living in The Bulwark on the 1911 Census so he must have had a temporary bank until the new building opened in 1912. The bank is Number 6 High Street Inferior – there is no number 5. On the other side of the road, opposite the Victoria Inn there are two shops in the garden of St Mary’s Church. These have also been pulled down to widen the road – do you know when this happened? www.blfhs.co.uk

New in Town Name of the business? Gifted IPL.

Pete’s Carpets

Where are you based? I am based in a popular beauty salon in Brecon called Beaunique.

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

Why Brecon? IPL is not offered around here. The nearest place to get treatments like this done is Cardiff or Hereford. I wanted to offer something new and different that I know people would love.

Domestic and Commerical Work Undertaken • High Powered Truck Mounted Machine • Fast Drying

Why did you decide to open this shop/business? When I was working within the beauty industry I had a lot of clients that would ask where the nearest place was to have IPL for permanent hair removal or thread vein removal, so I knew that would be a popular treatment if it was offered around here. What does your business offer? IPL covers a few areas with fantastic results. Permanents hair removal, skin rejuvenation, thread vein removal, pigmentation and scarring. Clients that have had their first treatment have already noticed results. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes. What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? When I was teaching at the college I had fantastic support there, and when I said that I was thinking of starting my own business I had some great advice from my colleagues that I could take with me and apply to Gifted IPL. The owner of Beaunique, Jaimee Bowen and Therapist Jodie Lewis have been so supportive and really made me feel a part of the team Jaimee has advised me and really helped put me out there. Describe a typical day in your business: Busy, I have a lot of emails, phone calls and clients. I work in a very fun and relaxed environment which defiantly helps each treatment is different which I love. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Do something that you love, look in to something new that you can offer.

The Trials of Oscar Wilde Tuesday 9th May - 7.30pm

Joe Longthorne

Thursday 14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Oscar Wilde’s career. Less than 100 days later he found himself a common prisoner and bankrupt, sentenced by the Crown to two years hard labour for homosexuality. But what happened during the trials and what did Wilde say? Was he harshly treated or the author of his own downfall? Using the actual words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius - as this less than ideal husband was tragically reduced to a man of no importance.

Saturday 6th May - 7.30pm Come and join TV and recording star Joe Longthorne as he takes you on a rollercoaster of Songs and impressions including Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and his incredible impression of Sammy Davis Jr, all delivered with 100% accuracy! Joe will be joined on stage with his sensational live band and a special guest artist.

Local Talent: Gemma Schiebe

Type of artist: I am a Painter, mostly an Oil Painter but I also make preliminary sketches/studies and make up compositions for my paintings through experimenting with the use of drawing and collage in sketchbooks and on paper. How long have you been an artist? I’ve always been creative and arty, I guess in a way I have always been an “artist”. However, this is on a more professional level now, because of my education and as I now show and exhibit my artworks. Locally and further a field, I have been involved in a variety of group shows and open exhibitions and I held my first solo art exhibition a few months ago. Where did you train/gain experience? In terms of training, I studied art at both GCSE and A Level, then undertook a Foundation Degree in Art and Design at Cardiff Arts Academy before achieving a first class Ba (Hons) Degree in Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design. In terms of experience, I underestimated how much experience I have gained from working in an Art Gallery and also organising and invigilating exhibitions which I have done at a variety of venues. I work in Ardent Gallery, Brecon and have learnt so much from seeing other artists’ works, learning about their lives and how they operate as an artist. Lastly, I undertook an artist residency at the Cyprus College of Art last Summer which gave me a valuable insight into both art and culture in another country and creating art in another country myself. Artist statement: My current practice aims to challenge and confront our nostalgia for traditional landscape paintings which portray aesthetic and romantic views of the land and to highlight the causes and effects of the

harm our earth experiences as a result of human neglect. It is easy to overlook and ignore the damage that is being done to our environment and to cling on to the image of an unpolluted landscape. My work explores an attraction to the beauty of nature and relies on it to expose the reality of the harm it is subjected to. Contrasting fragments of our natural landscape and imagery associated with environmental harm are brought together in a dialectical way so that they have a conversation. The imagery present together emphasises the fact that these images exist in the same environment and underlines the reality that the elements of unspoiled natural landscape may one day be lost and only a distant memory if the causes of its depletion are not acknowledged. Throughout my current practice, my ideas are explored mainly through painting, drawing and collage. Collage is employed to sketch, to create amalgamations of imagery to be translated into painting. My work breaks the conventions of a typical landscape format and painting from collage incorporates many different perspectives but builds up a believable image where natural landscape beauty is not separate from environmental issues. Contrasting imagery of nature with snapshots of environmental toll highlights the realism of the landscape we are very much part of today. Website: www.gemmaschiebefineart.com The artworks above are examples of Gemma’s original oil paintings.

Pension exit fees now capped for 300,000+ people New rules cutting early exit fees on pensions have just come into effect. This is excellent news for more than 300,000 people, who now have more freedom to take control of their pensions. Most pensions don’t have early exit fees. However, for personal pensions that do, they are now capped at 1 per cent for those 55 or older. Some pension providers have even removed the fees altogether. An exit fee could apply if you want to access your money or transfer to another provider before the retirement date on your policy, which is typically set at age 65.They are most common on policies set up with insurance companies in the 1980s and 1990s.

In some recent cases the fees have been eyewatering. For example, one saver has been quoted an early exit fee of over £10,000 and another potentially suffering a 58 per cent pot reduction if they transferred their £9,000 pension before its maturity date. The Financial Conduct Authority reports 66,000 people have faced charges above 10%. The pension providers claim that these fees are required to offset the initial cost of setting up the policies. The regulator has ruled that the exit fees have been excessive and has subsequently imposed a 1 per cent cap. If you’re affected, you could see a dramatic reduction in the early exit charge applied to your pension. This could help if you want to choose a pension with wider investment choice, better service and flexible retirement options. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Owning Property Jointly If you buy, inherit or become a trustee of a property with someone else you must decide which type of joint ownership you want. You can own a property as either ‘joint tenants’ or ‘tenants in common’. The type of ownership affects what you can do with the property if your relationship with a joint owner breaks down, or if one owner dies. Joint tenants As joint tenants (sometimes called ‘beneficial joint tenants’): • You have equal rights to the whole property • The property automatically goes to the other owners if you die • You CANNOT pass on your ownership of the property in your will Tenants in common As tenants in common: • You can own different shares of the property • The property does NOT automatically go to the other owners if you die • You can pass on your share of the property in your will Changing your type of ownership You can change from being either: • Joint tenants to tenants in common, for example if you divorce or separate and want to leave your share of the property to someone else – this is known as severing the joint tenancy • Tenants in common to joint tenants, for example if you get married and want to have equal rights to the whole property. You need the agreement of all the other joint owners to change from being tenants in common to joint tenants. You can also change from sole ownership to tenants in common or joint tenants, for example, if you want to add your partner as joint owner. This is called transferring ownership. For more information, contact a lawyer who specialises in property.

There’s so much going on in our local area, and so many great facilities for families and young children, but it can be hard to keep up and get organized enough to do everything we’d like to with the kids! Cariads Local aims to gather together the information you need for days out, workshops, classes, holiday daycare and child-friendly eating places, enabling you to make the most of your time with your family. It never fails to inspire me to do something fun and different with our 4 boys. Laura x
