Remember our annual photographic competition? Well we’ve finally picked our winners. It was the hardest year yet. Usually we just have three judges and have similar choices. However this time we all had different views. I had to call in extra judges from the Cariads Local team and go with a points system. Local photographers you really kept us on our toes this year! Turn to page 33 for the results and look left for a preview of our 2018 Local Landscapes Calendar. Last year we spoke with Wales Air Ambulance and have chosen to support this charity with 50p of every calendar sold going direct to them and their much needed services in our area. Enjoy your read, hopefully with a cold beverage in the sun! Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: So I recently travelled to X’ian, China to see the Terracotta Warriors. Wow, what an experience.)
Competition: (Winner of May Competition: Neil Dillon, Brecon)
For the chance to win a copy of the brand new crime novel by Jan Newton, Remember No More. ‘Wales Book of The Month for April’.. please complete the word search on page 21 and send to us by 16th June 2017. The winner will be picked at random.

Newss from
Kirsty Williams
On June the 8th you have opportunity to elect Welsh Liberal Democrat James Gibson-Watt, a hard-working local campaigner with a record of getting things done. I have known James for over 20 years and I cannot think of a better person to represent this constituency in Westminster. James and his family own a high street business, and his children all attended local schools. The Gibson-Watts have been in Brecon & Radnorshire for generations and James knows the constituency inside out. He has worked alongside former Welsh Liberal Democrat MPs Richard Livsey and Roger Williams, so knows what it means to be a good representative for Brecon & Radnorshire. James is the leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Powys County Council. Time and time again he has challenged the Council’s decisions on behalf of local people, including successfully leading the opposition to the closure of social day care centres. He knows the issues and knows how to get things done. Now more than ever we need an MP who can stand up to Westminster and fight for the interests of Brecon and Radnorshire. Theresa May’s damaging Conservative agenda will hurt local people. Our farmers, our tourism and our businesses cannot afford to come out of the Single Market - the biggest free trade area in the world. Hard-working families cannot afford ever increasing bills as the price of food continues to edge up. The Conservatives have not worked for Brecon & Radnorshire. Too many high streets are struggling, too many banks are closing, and too many people are losing services they rely on. James Gibson-Watt will be an MP for everyone. He will put people before his party and stand up for local people. On June 8th the choice is simple: an MP who will back the damaging Conservative agenda every step of the way, or an MP who knows our communities and will fight for their interests.

PLAN Brecon Helping to raise awareness Local community group PLAN Brecon are helping to raise awareness of invasive non-native species and inspiring people to get involved and stop the spread.
The River Usk is under threat from invasive plants. Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens Glandulifera) is an aggressive coloniser that represents a significant threat to any river system, but these problems are more severe on a river such as the Usk, which is of high conservation value. The plants are shade-tolerant, have dense vegetation and form a canopy well above the height of the native flora. Areas where the species are allowed to colonise rapidly lose their original diversity, as nothing can out-compete them, or survive in the environment underneath. Himalayan Balsam is reputed to be the tallest annual plant found in Britain, growing up to three metres tall. A native of the Western Himalayas, it was introduced in 1839 and is now recorded throughout the country. It grows rapidly, spreads easily, out competes other vegetation and readily colonises new areas. When the plants die down in winter they leave large bare areas that are sensitive to erosion. The seedpods are dehiscent and explode when touched or shaken, expelling the seeds up to seven metres from the parent plant. The seed is transported by water, but can also be carried in mud by animals and people. However, the plant is shallow-rooted and is easily removed. It is therefore controlled by grazing or by cutting or pulling before it sets seed. Himalayan Balsam shades out other plants, that in turn are unable to survive. It is relatively easy to pull up, which makes for a satisfying activity. Come join the PLAN Brecon “Balsam Bashers this year to help remove this invasive plant from the local area. Follow PLAN Brecon on Facebook (facebook.com/ PLANBrecon), Twitter (twitter.com/PLANBrecon), or look out for posters around Brecon for further updates.

REVIEW
“Reflexology has endless benefits!” I visited Holistic Therapist Helen Sheppard, F.M.A.R., M.A.R.R., on a Friday morning for my very first Reflexology treatment. What a lovely way to finish the long week! Helen is a highly qualified local Holistic Therapist, working mostly from her lovely home in Llechfaen. Helen specialises in Reflexology, something I have never tried before, so I was curious and excited to find out more. I arrived at Helen’s home at 11am for my appointment, and she greeted me warmly and instantly made me feel welcome. She guided me to her treatment room, which is a lovely calm and relaxing environment, with lovely scents and soft music combining together to create a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. I was immediately struck by the beautiful view of the Brecon Beacons through the panoramic window alongside the treatment bed, which filled the room with light. Before the treatment, Helen sat me down and popped my feet in a lovely warm foot spa, and asked me a few questions, one being, “Have you ever had Reflexology done before?” - which I answered no! Helen then kindly explained to me what Reflexology is, with clear diagrams which are displayed in the treatment room. I found it fascinating! It was nice to get a clear understanding of what I was about to experience. I learnt from Helen that Reflexology is a non-invasive method of encouraging relaxation, balance and healing of the whole body by the gentle stimulation of specific points on either the hands or the feet. Helen explained to me that every organ, gland and system of the body are ‘reflected’ in the hands and the feet. By Helen applying gentle pressure to the corresponding points, she is able to detect and correct any imbalances within the body that may be causing ill-health or disease.
As I lay down, Helen ensured that I was warm and comfortable, plump pillows and blankets are provided. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but for someone who is extremely ticklish in the feet department, it didn’t tickle one bit! Not once did I feel uncomfortable, it just felt like complete bliss.
Helen worked my right foot first, which corresponded to the right side of my body, and then she worked the left, corresponding to the left side, and then finished paying attention to both. Helen made me feel at ease and completely comfortable throughout the session. She has a lovely friendly nature, and is very professional. She is very happy to chat to her clients, but equally senses if you want to lay back and relax to the soft music playing in the background. I found I was my usual chatty self to start, but I ended up so chilled that for once I was quiet! During my treatment I asked many questions, I was really interested in what she was doing. Helen was very informative, and she is very knowledgable and experienced with Reflexology, you can tell she loves what she does. During the treatment, Helen identified my tense and tight shoulders. It was fascinating, I asked her how she knew, and she told me what part of my foot she was working on which corresponded to my neck and shoulders, and how she identified it. It’s very clever! The treatment took 50 minutes. Helen finished off in a calm and relaxed manner, leaving me to get up in my own time. Once my session had ended, Helen kindly used the EMMETT Technique on my shoulders and neck. It is a technique which has been shown to ease pain and discomfort, increase movement and improve quality of life. The technique involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points on the body.

Helen worked my Upper Trapezius to release tension in my shoulders which may contribute to restricted neck rotation, and it really worked! I felt a massive difference instantly. Helen and I joked that I was now an owl! Helen’s most popular treatment is Traditional Hand and Foot Reflexology, but she offers other treatments such as: Functional Reflex Therapy, Modern Facial Reflexology, Hot Stone Reflexology, Reproflexology, Maternity Reflexology, Light Touch Baby/Toddler, Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage, Palliative Care, Food sensitivity and Environmental Allergy Therapy, Vibrational Essences and Indian Head Massage. Reflexology is an excellent all-round therapy for people of any age and can be used purely for relaxation or be of benefit for a variety of conditions such as stress, anxiety or depression, circulatory problems, balancing of the hormones and body chemicals, fertility issues, sleep disorders, improving respiratory problems, regulating digestion and easing constipation, aiding arthritisis and rheumatism along with general aches and pains, as well as general cleansing and detoxification of the body. Reflexology has endless benefits! I thoroughly enjoyed my first Reflexology treatment with Helen. I slept like a baby that night! I would highly recommend a visit yourself, for a truly relaxing, enjoyable and beneficial experience. Please contact Helen on 01874 665 461 / 07976 546 051 for more information or to book your Reflexology appointment. Gift vouchers are available. Why not treat your Dad for Fathers Day? Thank you Helen!

THE ROSE
ROOFING THE ORIGINAL PERRY FAMILY trading as:
The Perry family has been repairing roofs in this area for over 45 years (three generations): • Traditional built up high tensile felting systems, fibre glass, single ply, liquid coatings, slating & tiling with manufacturers’ backed guarantees ranging from 10-25 years; • UPVC fascias and guttering – with 10 year guarantee. Since before Roman times gardeners have revered the rose as the queen of flowering plants for the extraordinary beauty and scent of its blooms. The rose family offers an enormous range of colour, shape and perfume from the simple purity of the wild dog rose, the soft, pastel charm of the old garden rose or the jewel-like brilliance of the modern hybrids. Whether grown alone in the splendour of a formal garden or enhancing the quality of a mixed planting it is hard to imagine a garden without roses heightening the glory of a summer’s day. There literally is a rose for every part of the garden ranging from the low growing ground cover and patio roses, through the larger bush and shrub roses to the climbers and ramblers for growing up walls, arches, pergolas and even through trees. They all generally prefer an open, sunny site and a fertile soil. When planting, and each year as a surface mulch, it is important to add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. For your roses to perform at their best, it is also vital to feed them, preferably twice a year in April and June, with a special rose fertilizer. This done they will reward you with beautiful flowers from June to well into the autumn year after year. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

An interview with a resident Karl Showler is currently the longest staying resident at Abbeyfield and the youngest to boot, having enjoyed 4 1/2 years of supported living in Brecon.
He was born in Kent in 1932 and remembers clearly the V1 and V2 bombs hurtling overhead on their way to cause havoc in London. He enlisted at a later date and now has some advantages of the designation of being registered as a blind veteran. He left his grammar school early at 16 to follow his first love of his life - beekeeping. Later he moved with his wife to Hay-on-Wye where he ran the smallest book shop in town for 20 years, including serving a term of office as Mayor of Hay in 2000. He has also lectured widely, written books and published papers on a wide range of academic subjects including Mr Gladstone, beekeeping and the Bishops of Hereford amongst other things. He is an internationally respected specialist in beekeeping and for many years would travel anywhere in the UK to assist another fellow beekeeper, such was his dedication to apiology, showing such typical generosity of time and spirit.
were, he said that he “likes it very much, especially the super food” and he” would not want to move anywhere else”. He also said how handy it was for walking into town on his own as everywhere was so close and accessible before his sight failed him.
He also goes regularly by taxi to the theatre for U3A meetings on a Thursday and enjoys a bowl of cawl while he is there and attends other events in town that come to his attention. It was a great honour to spend time talking with Karl; such an engaging personality with a huge breadth of knowledge on so many subjects and an amazingly positive outlook on life!
Sadly his wife suffered prolonged ill health in later life and Karl would regularly bring her to Brecon to spend time at Arosfa, the day centre next door to Abbeyfield, whence he became aware of Abbeyfield’s existence. After his wife passed away a conversation with a member of the committee at Abbeyfield resulted in Karl viewing a flat, which rapidly led to the sale of his greatly loved but too large house and garden in Hay-on-Wye. He still keeps as busy as the proverbial bee; morning coffee with friends from Abbeyfield in the comfortable lounge along with volunteers from the house committee, followed a little later by a delicious lunch served in the spacious dining room. His days are interspersed with visits from his many friends, family and a volunteer reader as he now suffers sadly from Macular Degeneration. The volunteer and Karl have literary discussions on selected books from his extensive library, as one would expect from a retired bookseller!
Supported Housing at Abbeyfield, Brecon Abbeyfield is your local provider for affordable, assisted living, offering an independent lifestyle with an emphasis on comfort, safety and sociability, in a stress-free environment where the worries of the world are taken away. JACKIES BLINDS
An extract from an inventory dated 1700 Wills and Inventory We all know that when someone dies their property is divided up according to their will (if they made one). As the Will is a legal document it should not be destroyed and solicitor’s offices often hold boxes full of old wills. Fortunately many of these have been given to the National Library of Wales, NLW, in Aberystwyth and are now available to look at, often on-line.

A will may record how property should be shared out. It was, and still is, important to know what property someone owned at the time of their death so an inventory was taken. Many inventories are also held by the NLW. The person taking the inventory walked around the house listing what they saw room by room. An example of a Brecon will and inventory is that of Richard Jones who died in 1805. He was a Corviser, shoemaker, and left property with a value over £320. His house was worth £30; his clothes valued at £2; watch, rings and plate £7; and a clock in the parlour and “a small one upstairs” were worth £4 together. Wills can be very useful for family history research as each relative can be named. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Brecon Town Open Studios Brecon is a town full of artists and occasionally we get to see their work in local galleries and shows. But what of the people and their working environment?
The Brecon Town Open Studios project started last year and the concept’s second outing takes place over two days this June. It’s an expanded collection of locally based artists this year but the rules are the same. Look out for leaflets around Brecon publicising the event, follow the map and start knocking on doors (of some historic houses). It’s a chance to buy art directly from the artist and speak to them about their work and inspiration.Visitors might even get a piece of cake and a cup of tea (cash donations
will go to The Friends of Brecon & District MIND). Artists include Sue Hiley-Harris, Veronica Gibson, Tessa Waite, Sean Crawford, Kathryn Roberts, Hilda Benham, Graeme Galvin, Jan Lewis-Jones, Roy Powell and the newly formed Artist Collective, housed in the Vaults beneath Brecon Market, which includes Velvet Cole, Gemma Shiebe, Karin Mear, Nigel Evans, Sarah Powell, Hariet Rowland and Angharad Pickering. Brecon Town Open Studios 2017 takes place on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th June, 12 noon until 7pm. For more information go to: www. brecontownopenstudios.co.uk, call 01874 622444 or find Brecon Town Open Studios on Facebook.

Local Talent: Lucy Roberts
Artist Name? Lucy Roberts/Lucy Jazz Photography.
Type of Artist? I am a freelance photographer, using digital SLR equipment and studio lighting to produce landscape and portrait photography. I mainly work from commissions from companies such as the BBC, and I particularly enjoy taking local landscape photographs of the beautiful area where I live. Range of Products: My commercial photography ranges from weddings and portraits to photographing high school proms and political campaign leaflets. I have been commissioned regularly to take onsite photographs of properties for sale on behalf of estate agents. I offer competitive prices, flexible hours and would consider any type of photography work including visiting locations and product photography. I can edit and enhance photographs, as well as providing high quality printing services including photo books and canvases. How long have you been an Artist? I have always been very creative and my passion for photography started when I was a teenager and I got my first camera. My favourite style of photography is landscape photography as I have been blessed to have grown up in such a picturesque area. I knew I wanted to do photography as a profession from an early age and chose to advance my studies on to University. Where did you train or gain experience? After studying photography for GCSE and A-Level at Gwernyfed High School, I then went on to study at the University of Brighton receiving a First Class BA Honours Degree. Over the years I have gained experience photographing everything from festivals, fashion shoots, Brighton and London Marathon, properties, weddings and portraits. What has been your proudest moment? My proudest moment was being asked by BBC Cymru Fyw to be their photographer of the month for April 2017. I have worked previously for BBC Cymru Fyw on several projects including photographing the
National Eisteddfod and Green Man festival. As photographer of the month I decided to focus my collection of photographs on the Brecon Beacons National park as it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. I really enjoyed the experience over the month of April exploring and photographing some of my favourite places in the park including Llangorse Lake and Hay Bluff. Here is the link to view the collection: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cymrufyw/39706085 What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I would consider my photography dissertation on phototherapy as my ‘masterpiece’. I explored issues of anxiety and depression amongst students and discovered the benefits of therapeutic uses of photography in overcoming these issues. My influence stemmed from psychotherapist and photographer Ulla Halkola who created a set of thematic Photo Cards used for therapeutic purposes such as counselling, where the participants could discuss their thoughts and feelings in relation to the photo cards. I interviewed students that were suffering with anxiety and depression, members of the charities MIND and CAMHS and worked alongside University counsellers. I produced a set of photo cards that can be used by the University of Brighton student counselling services as a way of helping students to talk about their feelings, to convey and evoke thoughts that words alone cannot express. Since graduating from University I was lucky enough to be asked to attend a Phototherapy Conference in London to speak about my work. Have you any future plans for your work? I’m looking forward to working with BBC Cymru Fyw again this summer photographing my favourite festival Green Man. I am extending my studio equipment to increase my range of portrait photography. I also have exciting new project ideas which I want to experiment with in the future.

There have been many changes in personal injury law and procedure over the last ten years from the constant “No Win, No Fee” adverts on TV to the most recent attempt at reform in Prisons and Courts Bill (now postponed until after the General Election) when the government proposed rules that will make it much more difficult to make a claim. So I had to call in more team members and go on a points system. Here are the results: 1st: ‘Spring Life in the Meadows of the Brecon Beacons, Cwmcamlais’ by Sean Crawford.
3rd: ‘Pen y Fan while waiting for the sunrise’ by Gareth Hughes

New Repair Café opens in Brecon Brecon Volunteer Bureau is pleased to announce the opening of the Repair Café at their offices at 99, The Struet LD3 7LS.The Repair Café will take place on the last Saturday of each month 11am - 2pm except for August and December. The June date will be June 24th and then July 29th. Funding from the National Park’s Sustainable Development Fund has helped the Volunteer Bureau start one of 1219 Repair Cafés around the world. It will be staffed by volunteer ‘fixers’ and helpers who will try their best to help fix the item. A voluntary donation is requested (spare parts will need to be purchased.) Refreshments are available for participants and there is a strong emphasis on community and enjoyment! So bring along: Household items/toys/ clothes/small furniture/electrical items (subject to assessment). One item per person. There will also be tool sharpening with Roy in the Market Hall and it will act as a collection point for Tools for Self Reliance Cymru.
Crickhowell Choral Society changes mood in the summer months, and this year is no exception. The choir will be in maritime mode this July as it performs Gilbert and Sullivan’s much loved opera HMS Pinafore in St. Edmund’s Church in Crickhowell on Sunday 9th July at 6.00pm. Underlying the comic nature of the opera are currents of social issues which have relevance in today’s world. You can be sure that the members of CCS will be exercising their considerable acting talents to bring you a memorable and enjoyable evening of well-known songs and humorous situations.
They would particularly like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a Volunteer ‘Fixer’ (you do not need to attend every month) and anyone who could donate spares for repairs. Local businesses - if interested, please send them your details as they will refer people where appropriate, to local shops and services.

Get to really know... Nigel Evans
Place of birth? I was born in Aberdare. Where do you live now? I live in Brecon. Marital status? I live with my partner Karin. Occupation? I’m a journalist mainly and filmmaker but I wear many hats. I was recently voted in as a Brecon Town Councillor. Children? I have a 15 year old son Hywel. Pets? A corgi collie cross called Polly. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Pogle’s Wood (with Pippin and Tog) and The Man From U.N.C.L.E (with Ilya Kuriakin). Are you a collector of anything? I collect guitars made in South Korea. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’d be a lynx for no other reason than they look cool and live in the mountains away from fast food and banks.
What makes you grumpy? The pomposity of the comfortably well-off.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I’d like to have a superpower that could predict when water coming out of a tap was warm enough to start having a shave, without standing there with my finger in cold water.
Teenage crush? Julie Christie (from Billy Liar).
What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Here we go again. Oh, I’m a town councillor now.
Have any bad habits? Tardiness.
What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Wow, really looking forward to tomorrow and the exciting challenges life will bring. Do you believe in ghosts? I believe in ghosts and welcome them into my home. Most exciting thing you’ve won? I won a tie-pin once but probably the two film awards I won recently for Greed the Movie (one in London and one in Copenhagen). Two lessons life has taught you? Patience and perseverance.
You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I’d spend a million pounds on my partner and son. A Maserati probably.
What’s your favourite song of the moment? The Barely Blur by American band Why? What’s your favourite song of all time? Tinseltown In The Rain by The Blue Nile. Best present ever received? My son Hywel. Have any hidden talents? They’re all on show sadly. Possibly parking a car. I can park anything. No honestly. What would be your dream job? Full time filmmaker. Or a van driver.

Orchestral Music for a Summer Evening Brecknock Sinfonia perform music from Austria’s three greatest composers, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert for their summer concert on June 10th. The Overture to Don Giovanni opens the evening on a dramatic note, before Haydn’s witty and melodious Symphony no, 101, usually known as ‘The Clock’ from its ticking accompaniment to the slow movement. Schubert was only 18 when he wrote his second symphony and although it fizzes with youthful energy, it is still a major work. These three works make the ideal music for a summer evening in Brecon Cathedral. Brecknock Sinfonia is an orchestra of professional musicians and talented amateur players from across Wales and the Marches, and gives four concerts annually in Brecon Cathedral.

Tuesday 6th June “The Most Infamous Family in History: the Borgias”- Brecknock Decorative & Fine Arts Society: 2.30pm. Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon. A talk by Sarah Dunant. Murder, poison, corruption and incest: all perfect ingredients for sensational popular culture, but in an age known for its brutality and church corruption, were the Borgias really so bad? This lecture reveals the real family that dominated the Papacy and Italian politics during the last decade of the 15th century: the charismatic figure of Pope Alexander VI,
living inside his sumptuously decorated apartments, the career of his son, Cesare, cardinal, general, employer of Da Vinci and the model for Machiavelli’s ‘The Prince’, and the journey of Lucrezia Borgia from “the greatest whore in Rome” to a devout and treasured duchess of the city Ferrara. Sometimes truth is more intoxicating than myth. Sarah Dunant has written novels about the Borgia family as well as historical novels set in Renaissance Italy. Annual Membership of Society £40 (July 2016 – June 2017). Visitors welcome. £7.50 per lecture, on the door or in advance from Theatr Brycheiniog. Concessions may apply for U3A members with U3A badge.
