Welcome to our July issue.
Last month the children and I returned from a stay in Shanghai. It was our second stint in the city, and what an adventure we had. With modern technology I was able to work on our magazines from the comfort of our high rise apartment. We made time for exploring and socialising with friends from all corners of the world. Cariad attended an International Kindergarten. Her class was taught in Chinese in the morning, English in the afternoon. If you see Cariad out and about, feel free to ask her about it. Her usual comments on it are “I prefer Clyro School, I didn’t know what they were talking about in China!”. Safe to say both children are glad to be back home. It’s the simple things: in Shanghai the kids were not allowed to walk on the grass. First day home, they took their shoes and socks off and enjoyed the green stuff for hours! It’s also making me appreciate our area, our community. I can’t remember the last time I climbed the Black Mountains or Pen y Fan – well this summer it is happening. July and August are great months for local events. As I write this column the sun is shining, the wildlife is vocal, life is good. For a full list of classes and events, turn to our growing What’s On section. Yet again we are producing the Brecon Jazz : Fringe Guide. Turn to page 3 to find out more.

KINGTON
BUILTH WELLS
-Your local MP
I am hugely excited to have been re-elected as Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire last week. I would like to thank everyone who put their trust in me to represent them once again in the House of Commons.

Both elections in Brecon and Radnorshire were a huge success for the Conservative Party. We now have 19 seats on Powys County Council and are now running the council in coalition with the Independent group.
• Print run to 8000
I have five key areas that I would like to focus much of my efforts on over the next parliament around my everyday duties as your MP. 1. Work closely with businesses to encourage local investment and job creation. 2. Fight the proposed closure of Brecon Barracks. 3. Encourage infrastructure investment to increase access to rural broadband. 4. Continue my campaign against LDP proposals. 5. Work with the relevant authorities to increase affordable housing across Brecon and Radnorshire. I believe that my five point plan strikes the right balance between moving forward and protecting what we hold dear. I will battle against the closure of the Brecon Barracks and against the LDP proposals planned for much of Radnorshire. Both our countryside and Barracks are integral parts of our constituency. They bring tourism and much needed investment into our area and I will battle to keep them in their current form. I will also push our constituency forward, encouraging business investment to ensure that Brecon and Radnorshire continues to have the lowest unemployment levels in Wales. Whilst improving our internet and phone signal infrastructure and providing new, innovative and well-priced affordable housing in the countryside and our beautiful market towns.

I thoroughly enjoy the election period as it gives me the much needed opportunity to knock on doors across Brecon and Radnorshire to see what issues people are facing and how best I can represent them at Westminster.
I was also re-elected with an increased majority. Beating the Liberal Democrat candidate by 8038 votes. This gives myself and my Conservative colleagues in Powys the opportunity to work closely, to ensure that Powys County Council works for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire.

Newss from
Kirsty Williams
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported James Gibson Watt and the Welsh Liberal Democrats in the general election. Thanks also to the huge number of helpers and volunteers from across Mid Wales who went above and beyond in the cause of an open, fair and tolerant society. Whilst the ultimate result was disappointing, I know that those of us that share progressive values will get up, dust ourselves down and carry on fighting, whether that be in a political party sense or in the amazing third sector organisations that we are blessed with here in Mid Wales. I congratulate Chris Davies on his victory, and wish him well returning to Westminster in what looks certain to be a very uncertain political climate. However, I do have grave concerns about what Theresa May’s coalition of chaos will mean for our communities. The Queen’s speech has already been delayed, and the Conservatives may well end up being held to ransom by the DUP. I will be keeping a very close eye on how their deal will affect local people, our public services, and our negotiations to exit the EU. The appointment of Michael Gove to the environment and rural affairs position is another area of concern to me. During the referendum campaign he told us he was “sick of experts”, I hope he will listen to the experts in his new role, otherwise the impact on our rural areas could be dramatic. As ever, if you would like to discuss an issue with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01874 625 739 or email me at Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales.

REVIEW
“Pizza like it should be made!”
We were honoured to have the only table in the smallest, or should I say ‘most exclusive’, restaurant in town reserved for us in Proper Pizza. With good reviews off friends, we knew we were in a treat. The menu is up on a large board upon one wall, with various ‘specials’ available each week. There are two sizes of pizza to choose from, and there was plenty of choice of toppings for meat eaters, vegetarians, traditionalists and the more adventurous! Sauces and bases are homemade by the owners from their own recipe, and both gluten free and sourdough bases are available. My husband is lactose intolerant so was thrilled to see that every pizza can be made using vegan/lactose free cheese. We ordered a vegetable pizza, loaded with lots of yummy veggies and with the vegan cheese, which melted beautifully and tasted delicious. It was so lovely for us to go out and be able to get a pizza for my husband which actually tasted like a decent pizza! The boys devoured a margherita and a ham and mushroom pizza between them. Neither stood a chance against four hungry boys and both were declared “Brilliant!” The bases were thin and crispy, just like we love them, with plenty of topping, and
the boys thought it was great fun seeing them taken in and out of the huge ovens. Proper Pizza have soft drinks available or will bring out a jug of iced water, and are happy to provide glasses if you are eating in. They also invite you to bring a bottle of wine, and will again provide glasses. Proper Pizza specialise in take away, but there was a lovely atmosphere when we were able to eat in, and it’s a great idea to have a table available for people, particularly tourists, who might pop in while it’s raining. We were made to feel very welcome and we loved the relaxed feel and friendly conversation with the owner. The prices seemed very reasonable for what is very good quality food, certainly no more expensive than getting something from Dominos, and so much better for you. Give the oven and the dishwasher a night off, and head down to Proper Pizza. Whether you’re after a romantic supper for two, or a quick refuel for the kids before rugby, you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome and pizza like it should be made! Review written by Laura Williams

DAHLIA Enjoying a much deserved return to popularity, Dahlias are perfect for planting in summer borders and patio containers as well as for cut flowers in the home. Often flowering until the first frosts this bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial is native mainly to Mexico but also Central America and Colombia. Planting Dahlias in July will bring instant impact and warm, vibrant colour to your garden. Easy to grow and tolerant of a wide range of soil types, you don’t need to be a gardening expert to plant, grow and enjoy these plants in your garden year after year. Dahlias can become very tall, so be prepared to support them as they emerge and grow. Always make sure that the dahlias are kept well fed and watered, dosing with a high potash plant feed as soon as the flowers heads appear. To keep them flowering for as long as possible, dead head as the flower petals fall and expose a pointed bud. Don’t confuse these with the rounded buds which are the new flowers! Dahlia tubers can be left to over-winter in well drained soils but to be certain of having them again for the following year tubers should be lifted after the first frost have blackened the top growth. Dry them off in a frost proof shed or greenhouse and then store them in dry compost until Spring. In March or April they can be started into growth in pots and planted out after the last Spring frost. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

GLANUSK SERVICES Sennybridge YOUR ONE STOP SHOP Situated on the main A40 between Brecon & Llandovery
The Old Bank (Lloyds Bank) The Old Bank was founded in 1778 by Walter and Jeffrey Wilkins to finance the drovers and iron masters of South Wales, and to pay the wages of the iron foundries of Cyfarthfa, Penydarren and Dowlais at Merthyr and the Abernant works at Aberdare. The building in which it was started is still used as a branch of Lloyds Bank, today, and must have looked much the same throughout its two hundred and thirty-nine year existence. The four original partners, Walter, Jeffrey and Richard Wilkins and Walter Jeffreys each put up £1000 to form the joint-stock bank. The bank dealt mostly with agricultural business, Brecon was on the route of the drovers, who bought cattle in West Wales and drove them to the West Midlands and London. Wilkins Bank issued their own banknotes until they were bought out by Lloyds Bank in 1890. Wilkins & Co opened a branch in Merthyr in 1812, and David Evans, who had been clerk in the Brecon Bank was made manager of the Merthyr branch, and later became a partner in “The Old Bank”. Branches of “The Old Bank” were opened as follows: Brecon 1778, Merthyr 1812, Haverfordwest 1828, Cardigan 1831, Llanelli 1837, Aberdare 1854, and Cardiff 1856. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

Get to really know... Donna Baldwin Donna moved to the UK in February 2002 with Husband Rob, settling in Wales in March 2005.
Place of birth? Dunedin, New Zealand. Where do you live now? Pentre-Felin, in the lovely Welsh countryside. Marital status? Married to Rob.
cold winter and that night was freezing! I was at that moment in time truly excited about winning it.
Two lessons life has taught you? Just because you plan it that way it doesn’t mean it’s going to work out that way. Throw away the 5 and 10 year plans, life always throws the curveball, and just sometimes, it’s for the better! What makes you grumpy? Large companies who give bad customer service and get away with ripping off their clients! And breathe... Teenage crush? Oh this is an easy question. Richard Hatch!
Occupation? Holistic, Beauty, Massage Therapist. Children? None. Pets? 2 Cats, Harley 14, Dharma 5, and Woody our resident woodpecker, and his babies. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Walt Disney, it was on every Sunday night, and it was always exciting to see if the episode was going to be Frontierland, Adventureland, Fantasyland etc. My favourite was always Fantasyland. Are you a collector of anything? Rob would say jewellery, handbags, shoes and scarves! I think I would need to agree with this. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Hmm, I thought about this long and hard. I thought a cat, but then I thought of all the cats mistreated, and then I thought I wouldn’t want to be a cat which wasn’t loved and cared for. However, if I was loved and cared for, then a cat, I would be a cat. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Easy, I would want my superpower to be able to heal people and animals. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Thank you Rob with my cup of spice tea. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? What type of day I have had.
You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I would love to build a wood cottage, and then have my family and friends come to stay, just relaxing and chilling, with good food and great conversation. Oh and have a massage and facial every day, and Rob, yes, you can have a swimming pool! Have any bad habits? Loads! The list is too long. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Talking with your mouth full. Do you believe in the afterlife? Yes, I have been to a medium and my Mother ‘came through’, the first time I found that very freaky as I was told things that no one over here (UK) would know about. What have you done in your life that would surprise someone meeting you for the first time? Not sure, Im pretty boring really, though I have moved home 31 times. What book would you recommend to others? Pretty-shield, Medicine Woman of the Crows by Frank B Linderman. Best present ever received? Rob arranged a holiday in Ireland for my birthday this year.
Do you believe in ghosts? Absolutely, I would love to have conversations with them!
List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I need to be more confident, I tend to underestimate what I can achieve.
Most exciting thing you’ve won? A hot water bottle at Crai Bingo a few years back. Seriously it was a
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Tuscany, just always fancied going

What’s your favourite song of the moment? It’s a CD, Celtic Seas by James Crisp. What’s your favourite song of all time? Cherry Bomb, John Mellancamp - brings back great memories. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? My working week finishes on Saturday, so I love to just relax at home (by the fire in the winter). What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? I usually end up by doing paper work, but I prefer to read a book or sewing. Have any hidden talents? Not really, though I’m not bad at sewing, lingerie and smocking are the two I like to make. What would be your dream job? I’m lucky enough to be doing it now. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? I have a yogic name which I’m happy with. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Today I had a new client who had never experienced any type of Complementary Therapy, she had a massage with me and said it was the best thing she had in a long time to make her feel relaxed. Sum yourself up in five words: I’m stubborn but also caring.

Tea-On-Top 2017
The Friends of Brecon and District Mind’s annual Teaon-Top walk takes place this year on Sunday 30th July. Organised to raise awareness of mental health issues, it revives a tradition which was popular in the region until the 1950s of holding a picnic tea at the top of a local hill. The walk will be a three-mile round trip, passing the ancient Maendu Well and exploring the Iron Age hill-fort of Pen-y-Crug near Brecon with its expansive views of the Brecon Beacons. There will be tea, cakes, sandwiches and music. To help with catering it would be helpful if you could, please, let the organisers know if you intend coming along. While care will be taken by the organisers, those taking part need to take responsibility for their personal safety. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please wear stout shoes and suitable clothing. Although there is no charge, a donations to Mind are encouraged. We meet in Brecon Cathedral car park at 2pm. Millennials can’t rely on the state pension & need to save more & prepare to work for longer, warns IMF
Millennials cannot rely on the state pension and need to take steps now and save more into their retirement fund, a new report has warned. While past generations have been able to use the traditional state pension as a safety net, the International Monetary Fund says this won’t be the case for younger workers. The main reasons for the stark warning is the increased cost of providing state pensions, which has increased from 4 per cent of GDP in 1970 to 9 per cent in 2015, and the rising life expectancy rate. As we are all living longer - the IMF estimates that life expectancy at age 65 is projected to increase by around one year a decade - the amount being paid into the system by those in work isn’t enough to support the aging population To deal with the pensions savings gap many countries have significantly changed the way they operate state pension systems – either by increasing the age at which people can receive it, lowering the overall amount, or both. As millennials start to enter the workforce, retirement might be the last thing on their mind but it’s estimated that they will need to save 6 per cent of their earnings each year to provide for a comfortable retirement. With sky-high rent, living costs and student loan repayments it may be a big ask for some millennials to meet this saving target. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Getting a Divorce Llanigon Plant Hire You have made up your mind – What happens next? Are You Entitled to a Divorce? There are two legal requirements that you must satisfy to obtain a divorce. Firstly, you must have been married for at least one year before you can apply. The second requirement is that you are to cite one of five possible grounds for divorce. These are:Unreasonable Behaviour – Your spouse has behaved in such a way that you cannot reasonably be expected to live with them. Adultery - Your partner has had sex with someone of the opposite sex. (you may not be able to use this as a reason if you continue to live with your spouse for six months after finding out about the adultery). Two Year Separation - If you have lived apart for at least two years. (Both of you agree that there should be a divorce upon this basis). Five Year Separation - If you have lived separate and apart for five years. (No agreement required from your spouse). Desertion - Your spouse has left you for two or more years without good reason. You will need to provide the Court with your marriage certificate and pay the court issue fee of £550.00 in order to obtain a divorce. Getting the Right Help Going through a divorce is a challenging and emotional time for you especially if there are children involved. It is important that you seek the right kind of help early on, and instructing an experienced family advisor can make the process a lot easier. It is a good idea to have a meeting with a professional to help you determine the best course of action. We can make a referral to Mediation as we understand that when a marriage has broken down it can be difficult to communicate. It is always better to calmly negotiate with your partner and to agree on as much as you can outside of Court. If you are considering a divorce or indeed would like advice on any other Family Matter then please contact our Mrs. Evans.

Get to really know... Contented Pets Brecon
DOG WALKING - We walk your dog from home when you are unable to.
BRECON
DOG HOME BOARDING – We board your dog in our home. CAT FEEDING – Your cat stays at your home where it has its home comforts. PLEASE CONTACT ANDY FOR MORE INFORMATION
When was the business started? Contented Pets started in May 2013. What made you setup the business? Andy was made redundant and because there were no jobs locally, was looking to set up his own business. We are both dog lovers and have our own dog, Cookie. Since being together we have owned 3 dogs. In the past we had often looked after dogs belonging to friends and family, so decided to have a go at making a business from it. We found a boarding business in Abergavenny that was looking for franchises. Where are you based? We are based in Brecon, Powys. We only do dogs walks or cat feeds within Brecon itself. However dogs that come and stay with us come from all over. As well as dogs from the local area, we have had dogs staying from areas such as London, Wolverhampton,Yorkshire and even Germany! Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? We are part of the contented pets franchise, there are 6 of us altogether. How many staff do you employ? It’s just myself, Andy, who mainly runs the business, although my wife Helen helps out when she can. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? As a dog boarding business we have to be licenced by the local authority, this means we have to have yearly inspections to make sure our house is appropriate to house dogs. We are licenced to have up to 4 dogs at any one time. We also have to be registered with a local vet, have pet boarding insurance and have regular CRB checks. What is your ideal job/client? I love doing this job because we are dog lovers, sometimes we are sad to see them go. But as we get lots of repeat customers, it’s lovely to have them back again. Dog walking is a great way to keep fit and get out and

about, although the weather is not always kind to me. I currently walk a terrier cross for an elderly lady who is virtually house-bound. I always make sure I have time to stop for a chat with her. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Our greatest achievement has been growing our customer base from 0, we now have about 100 on our books. We have lots of repeat customers and some will even book holidays around us having free dates, which is lovely. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: We are very lucky that we have enough room for 4 dogs and a very large garden for them to play in. However if we could change anything it would be to have a bigger house so we could have more dogs. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Since starting the business we have noticed that Andy seems to have a real affinity with dogs that stay. We have had a few dogs that stay and the owners have said the dogs are very shy around men. Within an hour of being here the dog is fast asleep on Andy’s lap. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? One funny thing that sticks in my mind is the time we had a Bull Mastiff and a Dachshund staying at the same time, talk about little and large! They became great friends and, of the course, the dachshund was the boss. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? Although the business is mostly run by Andy, his wife Helen helps out as much as she can. Helen has a full time job but has over 30 years experience of dog behaviour and training which comes in handy.
