“ I have found that advertising in the Local Beacon has definitely improved my business. I would say that a good percentage of my work comes through this monthly advertisement. With the magazine going to so many homes in the local area, it has been a good source of income, and all at an affordable price.” - Steve Cook - Painter & Decorator

New in Town Name of the Business: Beacons Home Services. Where is your business based? We are based in Sennybridge and cover Brecon and all surrounding areas. What services do you offer? We offer all services that people need help with on a day-to-day basis. • Elderly home help: Cleaning, bed changing, meal preparation, shopping, escort to appointments, and companionship calls for a friendly face and a chat. • Domestic services: Cleaning on a one off, weekly or monthly basis. • Holiday cottage changeovers. • Holiday/pet boarding services: We offer home from home dog and small animal boarding, or daily call ins to your home to feed and care for your pets. We can also water the plants, put the bins out and even provide fresh groceries for your return. Why did you decide to start this business? I saw a huge gap in the market for a general home help service, so decided to take a leap of faith and start up Beacons Home Services.

boarders we have staying, get myself ready for the day, then get the dog boarders out for their first walk. During the day I may support someone to a doctors appointment, help them with some cleaning, and cook them some lunch, then go and do a changover at a holiday cottage. Every day is different. Then it is home for another walk for our dog boarders, feeding time, and then lots of playing and cuddles in the evenings. It is a physicaly demanding day, but I enjoy every minute, as every day is so different. Any advice to new businesses in the area? Do your research, know your target market, and most of all, enjoy what you do. If you enjoy the service you are providing people will see this instantly, and will have confidence in you, and the service you provide.

I am a real animal and people person, so helping people out and looking after their pets on a daily basis makes me happy, and doesn’t really feel like work at all! What type of education and experience do you have to run this business? Prior to starting Beacons Home Services, I was working as a manager in the health and social care sector, enabling vulnerable adults to live independently in their own homes, which was very rewarding. I wanted to continue along a similar path to make use of my experience, and also incorporate my love of animals into the mix. Do you hope to expand? Yes. I hope to start employing over the next few months in order to provide the service to all areas outside of Brecon. There is a big demand for elderly home help on the outskirts at present, especially for those receiving direct payments. I would eventually like to be able to fill the demand and help as many of these people as possible. Describe a typical day in your business: A typical day starts early. I get up and feed the home from home

FOCUS ON

Elan Valley Reservoir by Christine Starnes

Photographer’s name: Christine Starnes. Where do you live? Peterchurch, Herefordshire. Occupation? Worked for West Mercia Police for 10 years, and now retired. Amateur or Professional photographer? Amateur. How did you get into photography? At quite an early age. My dad liked taking photographs, and for a short time I accompanied him to camera club meetings, where I sometimes sat as a model. I started with a Minolta, then a compact Fuji, then onto a Panasonic SLR. When I moved to Herefordshire 14 years ago, I saw a notice asking for new members to join Hay Camera Club. I wasn’t into developing and printing, but this offered digital photography. I entered inhouse competitions, and gained a lot of knowledge and advice, both critical and constructive, from judges and other members of the club

which were invaluable. I purchased a Canon 60D and have several lenses. I have been on several workshops to gain experience, and am still learning to this day. What is your favourite local point of beauty? This is difficult since the landscape around the Brecon Beacons is amazing - mountains, waterfalls, lakes. I suppose I have visited Llangorse Lake several times as well as Hay Bluff, because they are very near to home. I love Hay Bluff as the landscape changes with the seasons, and you can see for miles! Top tip to other local photographers? Join a local camera club. Ours is a very friendly club made up equally of men and women, both experienced and beginners. The knowledge and help to be gained is immense. Anything readers would like to know about you? My husband and I play patanque in the Marches League and we have both made lots of new friends. Since joining a camera club I have my own hobby, his being football, which has made me become more independent.

How and when did you get into photography? My father was a press photographer when I was a girl, so I don’t remember ever not having a camera. I bought my first SLR to occupy myself whilst my husband was birdwatching. When I bought my first digital SLR, about 13 years ago, I really became enthusiastic about landscape. What is your favourite local point of beauty? I’ve only lived in the Brecon Beacons for 10 months, so there are loads of places yet to visit, but my favourite local place is Blaen y Glyn. The river is different every time I go.

Flavour packed, extremely enjoyable craft beers... Lithic Brewing are one of Wales’ newest breweries, having started up in the Brecon Beacons 6 months ago. They are focused on creating flavour packed, extremely enjoyable craft beers and currently have something for everyone with their 6-strong core range. Lithic have embraced the canned beer revolution. All their beers are available in cans, which offer advantages to beer quality and the environment. The brewery is located on Tynewydd Farm in Llangorse. With views to the lake and the surrounding hills it is both an enjoyable place to work and visit, and not just another industrial estate. David, the brewer and founder, started Lithic following several years home brewing, which started with the first ever batch being created in his tolerating Mum’s kitchen back in 2007. After being inspired by the new wave of craft beer from across the world, he spent the following years

experimenting and developing recipes, before taking the leap and starting Lithic in March of this year. In early September, Lithic are due to share the stage with some of the finest breweries from Wales and the UK at Tiny Rebel Brewfest in Cardiff. Follow Lithic’s social media pages for news on open days and events.

Beacons Cleaning Services Commercial & Domestic Cleaning Service

Castle Mill, Brecon Water Mills in Breconshire The earliest references to mills were in the 15th century in the form of leases. The first refers to Llanmays (Llanfaes, Brecon) in 1410, 1431, and 1453. There were many 16th century mills, for example“Talabont” in 1528 and “Melyn Powell” in Llanfrynach in 1558. In the 19th century the number of mills increased rapidly, and by 1900 there were 109 mills in Breconshire, but by 1926 this had dropped to 22 working mills. In 1905 Nott & Co. Agricultural Engineers & Wheelwrights in Brecon advertised waterwheels 10ft diameter by 2ft 6ins wide for £25, and a 12ft waterwheel for £33.10. Other firms making waterwheels were Thomas Williams, Brecon; Hodges & Wright, Brecon and Urwick Davies, Llyswen. The introduction of large steam-powered mills in the ports by large firms such as Rank and Spillers made the small country mills uncompetitive and caused their demise.

Turbines were installed in some mills to make them more competitive, and the turbine and milling machinery still remain in Trericket Mill, near Erwood. During World War I and World War II, many mills were stripped for scrap metal and left in ruins. The last two mills in Breconshire closed about 1950. They were Felinfach Mill & Talybont Mill. Talgarth Mill has recently been rebuilt, and is again producing flour. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

GARDEN CHRYSANTHEMUM These flowering perennials are native to Eastern Europe and Asia and typically grow to about 18 inches in height. The large, ornamental flowers produced can be a range of colours depending on variety. Chrysanthemums require little care to grow and can thrive in the home garden with only routine maintenance. The Chrysanthemum is a welcome late summer and autumn showing plant perfect for beds and borders. ‘Pot Mums’ are a popular variety of the chrysanthemum which are perfect for pots and planters. The flowers produced also have the added benefit of providing perfect cutting material for floral arrangements. Plant your pot mum in a sunny location but not direct sunlight if possible, this may fade the blooms. Fertilizing your plant just before it blooms will encourage the plant to grow the best flower heads possible. Remember to remove any spent flower heads; as the blooms die pinch or clip them off. This ensures all the nutrients and moisture available goes to the new buds and blooms, helping a longer bloom period. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

Wild in September

Protecting wildlife for the future

Autumn Gentian at Allt Rhongyr To see this in Brecknock you need to be on the limestone to the south of the county: Allt Rhongyr Nature Reserve for instance – or Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve above Llangattock but it probably can be found between these in places in late summer / autumn. Another common name is Felwort which may or may not be a corruption of “Field Wort”. The small plants are difficult to find before they flower. The name “Gentian” is derived from Gentius, an ancient King of Illyria (180-167 B.C.), who, according to the ancient Greeks, discovered the medicinal value of these plants. A free Habitat Management Course starts on the 1st of the month at Ystradgynlais with six sessions once every week. There are Nature Reserves Volunteer Work Parties at Ystradgynlais (Marsh Fritillary survey day) on the 1st as well; Vicarage Meadows on the 5th and again on the 12th and 15th.Then on the 16th there is a Foraging walk around Ystradfawr Nature Reserve with soup around the campfire.

What happens if you decide to transfer out of a final salary pension scheme?

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English”

Over the last 12 months 80,000 members have transferred out a final salary pension scheme. This is a massive increase on previous years and it’s largely attributed to high transfer values and “pension freedoms” legislation that was introduced by the government in April 2015 for members of defined contribution pensions. Moving out of your defined benefit scheme means going into a defined contribution pension. If you do transfer, responsibility for your pension will pass from the employer to you. That means managing the pension investments on an ongoing basis will be your responsibility, as will bearing all the investment risk through the ups and downs of financial markets. That job would continue during your retirement years, unless you purchased guaranteed income via an annuity, which would prove expensive compared with giving up the guaranteed income from your defined benefit pension. You will need to consider a whole range of factors before making a transfer to assess whether the benefits of moving to a defined contribution scheme outweigh staying in your defined benefit pension. The right thing to do depends on your specific circumstances and requirements, like how much you value the flexibility of a defined contribution pension, for example, or whether you have any other forms of secure income in addition to the defined benefit fund. Any concerns about the scheme’s solvency may form part of this consideration, but your pension would ultimately be protected by the Pension Protection Fund if your employer did become insolvent. A financial adviser will be able to help you review these matters. Government legislation makes it compulsory for people to get independent financial advice if they want to move a defined benefit pension with a transfer value of £30,000 or more. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

Property Fraud

Your property is probably the most valuable asset you own so it is important to protect it from the risk of fraud. What is property fraud? Fraudsters can and do target properties for fraud. By pretending to be you they can try to sell or mortgage your property, leaving you to deal with the consequences. Fraud of all kinds is on the increase, so it’s important you do what you can to protect yourself. You’re more at risk if your property: Is rented out, is empty, is mortgage-free, isn’t registered with HM Land Registry. To reduce the risk of being a victim of property fraud: Sign up to the free Property Alert service at the Land Registry - The Land Registry will notify you of certain applications affecting the property you are monitoring, such as for a new mortgage or change of ownership. If you receive an alert about activity that seems suspicious you should take immediate action – see the information below about who to contact. If you think you may be the victim of property fraud. You can monitor up to 10 registered properties in England and Wales. You don’t have to own the property, so you could monitor the property of an elderly relative for example.

It is a good idea to register your Property at the Land Registry so that you can be compensated if you are a victim of fraud and suffer financial loss. The vast majority of properties in England and Wales are registered. Those most likely to be unregistered are properties that haven’t changed hands or been mortgaged since the late 80’s. Charities Benefit from Freemasons During his term of office, Mike Edwards, who was the Master of Brecnock Master Masons Lodge, managed to raise £500.00 for his favoured charities. He presented two cheques for £250.00 each. One to the Alzheimer’s Society, which was represented by Mr Pat Deane, an ex-army officer, who at the age of 74, with 9 members of his family, climbed Mount Snowdon on the 27th August 2017, to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Mike also offered a cheque to Miss Kim Richards, a representative from Sense Cymru, who help with the support and development of Deaf and Blind Children within South Wales. This is in addition to the charitable work carried by the masons throughout the year, supporting local charities. For further information on Brecon Masons, go to www.breconfreemasons.co.uk

The Drew Barker-Wright Charity Appeal

Microtopping UK

It has been six months since we lost our only son Drew, to an extremely rare childhood cancer. Whilst Drew was ill our local and wider community raised money to support us as a family. We now wish to put that money to good use. We are setting up a charity in Drew’s name. We aim to fund research and support families affected by Paediatric Chordoma. Due to its rareness the survival rate of children under the age of five is very poor. We want to raise awareness of this cancer, fund new research and provide a network for families dealing with the devastation of this diagnosis. Our first event as a charity is the Cardiff Half Marathon. We have never been runners, but were advised that this form of exercise was good therapy for grief. When word of our plan got out, it wasn’t long before we amassed a team of 60 runners. #TeamDrew consists of absolute beginners to seasoned runners. Jo Lord is running with us and will be providing a team warm-up on the day.We are also delighted to have Steve Mandel – a chordoma survivor – on board. #TeamDrew aim to raise as much money as possible for our cause. Please support us as we devote our time, sweat and tears to the memory of Drew and children worldwide living with Paediatric Chordoma. You can donate via our Just Giving page: w w w. j u s t g i v i n g . c o m / crowdfunding/team-mummydaddy-drew or find donation buckets in Talgarth Co-op, The Bakers’Table at Talgarth Mill and Ty Cariad on the Bulwalk in Brecon. Microtopping creates a continuous surface with no joints unless required. Applied in no more than four coats, the final thickness can be as little as 4mm thick, making it a very versatile alternative to tile and wood flooring. Microtopping can be used on both internal and external surfaces and can be applied to almost any substrate with the correct primer. We apply the product to floors, staircases and feature walls, wetrooms and worktops and even furniture. The finished product is very strong and durable, eco friendly and resistant to high uv levels. So if your looking for a seamless, contemporary finish in a large range of colours and effects, then please get in touch for more information. Brecon Market the Heart of the Town

There isn’t a candlestick-maker at Brecon Indoor Market – well, not yet. But there is a butcher, a baker and now there’s someone selling vinyl. For shoppers of a certain age, that means records / LPs, and singles of course. There’s a resurgence in collecting vinyl records and the Tuesday and Friday weekly Brecon Indoor Market likes to stay on trend. The twice-weekly market also has an exciting variety of stalls selling childrens’ books, crystals, guitars, jewellery, welsh cakes, antiques, incense, cake decorating & party supplies, rugs, ladies fashion wear, ‘real’ hot chocolate, textile designs, fabric, tools, home made cakes and local produce, make-up and more.

ROOFING THE ORIGINAL PERRY FAMILY trading as:

The Perry family has been repairing roofs in this area for over 45 years (three generations): • Traditional built up high tensile felting systems, fibre glass, single ply, liquid coatings, slating & tiling with manufacturers’ backed guarantees ranging from 10-25 years; • UPVC fascias and guttering – with 10 year guarantee. Your property deserves the best so, for a free survey and estimate tel: 0500 130852 www.centralroofing.co.uk

The market offers services such as blade sharpening and watch battery and strap fitting, and during school holidays there is often a bouncy castle to keep children entertained. It’s worth noting that some traders attend both weekly markets while others attend only one so it’s best to contact the market before making a special trip. Speciality markets take place most Saturdays – these include craft, toy & train fairs, militaria, antiques, and a farmers market. The Market Arcade is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturday (half day on Wednesdays) and the Indoor Market is open on Tuesdays and Fridays 9am – 5pm. New traders are welcome to apply for a stall at Brecon Indoor Market.Visit www.breconmarket.co.uk for more information or email info@little-bird-creative.co.uk

News from Chris Davies

We provide quality new and used vehicles, many available to order

-Your local MP

Chris Davies MP has backed calls for broadband compensation. Since my election in 2015, I have campaigned vigorously for improved broadband access for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire, and over the last two years access has increased from 45.1% to 67.1% across the constituency. A report by the British Infrastructure Group lists the worst performing parliamentary constituencies in the UK, with seven of the top 20 in Wales. With Brecon and Radnorshire in 14th place. It is absolutely disgraceful that people in Brecon and Radnorshire who have been suffering with terrible internet connections are still paying for broadband access they don’t receive. Many constituents pay hundreds of pounds a year and receive little or no access. This is outrageous and I am joining other MPs in calling for people who suffer with poor broadband to be reimbursed for the times when their internet has not been accessible.

I believe in the 21st century there should be a basic level of internet and phone access throughout the country, wherever you are.We now live in an age where people live and work through digital devices and most businesses are doing a fantastic job in modernising. None of us could imagine ten years ago, that in almost every hotel, café and restaurant in the country we would be provided with free access to their Wifi. This is because we have all become ever more digitalised in the way we socialise and work. It is now inconceivable that people can’t access their basic connectivity needs in large parts of our constituency. Some areas still struggle to get any phone signal at all. I am glad the Welsh and UK Government has increased funding for super-fast broadband but the private sector needs to take a more direct role. I am backing calls on the UK government to introduce minimum standards for the broadband sector, with the aim for providers to deliver a basic level of accessibility for everyone across the UK. Times are changing and internet providers must keep up.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

For me, one of the best parts of the job as the Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire is visiting many of the town and village shows we have in this constituency in the summer. It is always great to see the wonderful community spirit, not to mention the fantastic local produce and products on display. The largest of these shows is, of course, the Royal Welsh in Llanelwedd. Brexit was the main topic that came up when speaking to the stall holders and visitors I met at the show. It has been over 13 months since the vote to leave the EU, yet the general public seem to be no clearer now about what Brexit will mean for them, than they were on the 23rd of June 2016. Economists from the London School of Economics recently calculated the impact of both a soft and hard Brexit on every local authority in UK.Their research found that every local authority would be negatively affected under either scenario but concluded that the economic impact of leaving the single market and customs union would be around twice as severe as a milder Brexit. They said that Powys could lose between £22 -£36million per year, depending on the trade agreement with the EU. This is deeply worrying and the UK government needs to look at this report and try to address the issues it raises. Overall Powys did vote to leave the EU, but people did not vote to make Powys poorer so the Government must address this. Another issue that people frequently raise with me is Broadband. We recently had an amazing response from Brecon and Radnorshire residents with over 100 people attending a meeting with Openreach about their broadband at Brecon Library. The Openreach officials left with little doubt about how strongly people feel about the issue in this area. By contrast, at a similar event in Denbighshire, only one person turned up! It was so well attended that they have agreed to hold another meeting somewhere in Radnorshire in September. If you would like to come to that meeting, or would like me to submit your case to them, please email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth When the post of Police and Crime Commissioner first came into being, it is fair to say that the Liberal Democrats were highly sceptical and, along with Plaid Cymru, we decided not to contest the first election in Dyfed-Powys back in 2012. However, at the time the primary legislation was enacted, my party insisted upon a robust scrutiny function, in the form of Police and Crime Panels. As from the Powys County Council AGM in May 2017, alongside Cllr David Evans (Ind) and Cllr Les George (Con), I have been appointed to the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Panel by the Home Office and, as the only representative from Breconshire, am looking forward to the new challenge. High on the agenda of our first meeting in Carmarthen on 28th July was a scrutiny session with Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn (PC), elected in May 2016. As part of his annual report presentation, Mr Llywelyn explained why the police precept had to increase by 6.9% this year. He acknowledged that it was far from popular politically, but in the previous financial year, over £2million of reserves had to be used to ‘prop up’ the revenue budget. Dafydd Llywelyn attributed this directly to the former Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner, Christopher Salmon, who cut the precept by 5% and then froze it the following year. Other key topics upon which the Commissioner was challenged included the level of cautions issued in the force area and his forward strategy on CCTV. Dyfed-Powys Police covers a vast area and we all depend upon the police at key points in our lives, making the Panel’s work all the more important. For further information, please visit our website http://www. dppoliceandcrimepanel.org.uk/ All meetings are open to the press and public, and with the prior permission of the Chair, people can ask questions or make a statement in relation to a matter being considered by the Panel. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the website, if there are issues where we can be of assistance.

All 17 of it’s team members came home with a medal! In track and field three golds, four silvers and a bronze – all won by just three-star competitors! Long Jumper Hannah Charnley, Brecon, landed a gold with 2.83m – division F04. Hannah also won golds in 100m (F06) and in the 4x100m (F01) relay– very well-done Hannah! Well done to Rebecca Morgan (Builth Wells) two silvers and a bronze. Silver in the mini-javelin and silver for the standing long jump bronze in the 100m (F04). Great running Joshua Longbottom (Brecon) – Silver in 200m (M12) and the 4x100m category (T04). Gold was the medal colour for Badminton double players Lloyd Crawley (Ystradgynlais) and Ethan Orton (Brecon)– well done! In Basketball Brecon won the silver medal in pool B and were awarded the pan competition Special Achievement Award, as well as coming joint top for the Sportsmanship Award. Coaches rotated the squad over 11 matches and the mixed sex and age group team lost only once. In the close fought final, they were pipped by just one basket to the gold – beaten by Eastern Region from England. Well done to Aled Thomas (Rhayader), Huw O’Reilly (Hay on Wye), Michael Delahaye (Builth Wells), David Whittle (Brecon), Lance Hughes (Hay on Wye), Tommy Davies (Ystradgynlais), Russell Reeves (Brecon/ Llandovery), David Gorton (Hay on Wye), Daniel Grinter (Brecon / Ystradgynlais), Samantha Hall (Llandeilo) and Bardh Gashi (Sennybridge). Busy season ahead for Orchestra Brecknock Sinfonia is the resident orchestra of Brecon Cathedral, and is made up from professional musicians and exceptional amateur players from across Wales and the Marches. The 2017/8 season begins on September 16th with a concert of music with Beethoven at its core. It begins with the mighty Coriolan overture, written for a play on the story of Coriolanus, the popular hero brought down by his flaws, which gave the composer inspiration for typically stirring music. In contrast Fauré’s hauntingly clear Pavane and John Ireland’s pastoral Downland Suite provide more reflective moments. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, an earlier work bursting with melody and fresh musical ideas.

There will be further concerts on January 27th, March 10th and June 9th 2018, and on November 25th this year the orchestra accompanies Crickhowell Choral Society. All Brecknock Sinfonia concerts begin at 7.30pm, and tickets (price £13), are available at the door.
