Our ‘Focus on’ articles continue on pages 9 & 10. It really is a pleasure to showcase these amateur photographers that have contributed to our 2018 Local Landscapes Calendar. New in Town

Tea Emporium

Name of the business? The UK Loose Leaf Tea Company Ltd. Where are you based? Tea Emporium, 13 Ship Street, Brecon LD3 9AD. Why Brecon? We live in Brecon, and would like to add a little back to the community by having our shop based here. Why did you decide to open the shop? We decided to open the shop as demand for our quality loose leaf tea increased; requiring more storage and order processing space, and we thought a shop would be as good, if not better, than a warehouse. It would also allow us to showcase some of the rarer teas available, in an easy to view and relaxed atmosphere. What are some of challenges you encountered? Finding the right premises at the right price. What do you wish you had known before you started? The amount of unnecessary red tape designed to stop your business before it starts. Is this the first business you have launched? Retail is a completely new venture for us. What type of education or experience helped you to open and run this business? A love of tea and a background in sales and marketing. I have spent 20 years as a representative for companies working both here in the UK and Europe. My love of tea, talking to people and learning something new every day keeps me going. Describe a typical day in your business: Getting in early, going through all the shelves to stock up and reposition everything, (it has to look perfect), downloading and packing all the web orders. Serving behind the counter and chatting to all our customers, (whether purchasing, browsing or just popping in to say hello). It is amazing how intersesting and diverse the knowledge of our customers is. When I say me, it’s really the both of us, my wife and myself, we love working together and do everything as a partnership. Any advice to new businesses in this area? We are new to 13 Ship Street, so hopefully local sales will grow as people know where we are and when we are open. Therefore business seems slow off the starting blocks. All we can say is, “do your research and don’t be afraid to give it a go”.

We hope as small independent shops open, it will bring back shoppers to Brecon. There is an old marketing saying, “without footfall (customers) you won’t survive and footfall (customers) won’t come if the shops aren’t here”, so please Powys County Council, think about this when you look at car parking fees, length of stay, business rates and the layout of Brecon. Help the small independants as well as the bigger boys, and you will reap the rewards in the future, with a vibrant, diverse and healthy Brecon, where people come and spend time and money, investing in the future of our town.

REVIEW

“ A delicious bite to eat before seeing a show or after a walk along the canal”

The Waterfront Pop-up Café, situated right on the canal front on the ground floor ofTheatr Brycheiniog, is providing a delicious new dining option to locals and visitors alike.

made teas and coffees, as well as soft and alcoholic drinks. We opted for an elderflower presse and a sparkling water.

The Pop-up Café’s focus is on providing a range of locally sourced produce on their menu, so people can have a delicious bite to eat before seeing a show or after a walk along the canal. They are open from 10am daily, and on show nights, food is available throughout the day, with last meals able to be ordered 45 minutes before the start of the show in order to allow plenty of time to eat. As well as hot food, there are sandwiches and baguettes along with very yummy looking cake, so you can still have a chance to eat if you’re running a bit short on time.

The menu had a nice choice of dishes, there seemed to be something for all tastes, whether you just wanted a sandwich or something heftier. There were options for vegetarians and vegans.

It was pouring down when my friend Sarah and I arrived at the Pop-up Café for our lunch, and we were very grateful to be in the dry and warm. In fine weather, it would be lovely to sit outside by the canal, but it was definitely a day for being indoors! The Pop-up Café had a good selection of freshly

The cooked meals sounded delicious so we both chose those. I had a vegetarian lasagne, which came with salad and garlic bread, and Sarah went for a chicken curry with nan bread and salad. Both meals arrived quickly, and were just what we needed to warm us up! There was plenty of flavour to both dishes, and the salad was very fresh and tasty. Prices seemed very reasonable for a good sized meal. In fact, they were such a good size, neither of us could manage to sample any of the cakes on offer! A first for us! The Pop-up Café has been a hit, so it’s being kept open until December 2017, and the new restaurant will open at the end of January 2018. Review written by Laura Williams

GLANUSK SERVICES Sennybridge YOUR ONE STOP SHOP Situated on the main A40 between Brecon & Llandovery

Taken from the 1952 Ordinance Survey Map Brecon Isolation Hospital Before the first use of antibiotics in the 1940s, simple infections could kill. Patients had to be isolated either at home or in Isolation Hospitals for the sake of the rest of the community. Brecon had its own Isolation Hospital just off Warren Road, of which nothing remains today. In 1902, Brecon Town Council discussed building an isolation hospital on the edge of the town. By that summer, there was an outbreak of Smallpox in the town and a canvas isolation hospital was temporarily erected off Warren Road. For ten years, there were no patients sent to the Isolation Hospital, until in 1913, there was an outbreak of Diphtheria and the facility was reopened. Major improvements were made to the buildings and an advert for a permanent female caretaker was posted. The site had apparently consisted of a number of buildings built from galvanised iron around a wooden structure. Conditions inside must have been primitive and grim. Providing water and sanitation to the site was also problematic. The facility probably ceased to be used in the 1930s. Brecon Baroque Festival - Bigger and better! The Brecon Baroque Festival, which celebrates Vivaldi and the music of Venice this year, runs from 26th - 30th October at venues in and around Brecon.

Now in its 12th year, the Festival is bigger and better than ever before with more venues, more musicians, more music, walks, talks, tours and dancing. There are five concerts given by the acclaimed international baroque violinist Rachel Podger and her award-winning group Brecon Baroque; the vocal ensemble ‘I Fagiolini’ directed by Robert Hollingworth who make their Festival debut; Ensemble Diderot; and a brass group from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. These world-class concerts, which include a performance by Rachel and Brecon Baroque of Vivaldi’s landmark work, The Four Seasons, on Saturday night, frame a long weekend of music-making. Other events include a pop-up café - Caffe Florian - with live chamber music, Festival Evensong and Eucharist at Brecon Cathedral, plus a lovely guided walk in the Beacons which includes a tour of Penpont House in the Usk Valley as well as the Festival’s annual Baroque tea dance at Theatr Brycheiniog. For more information about the Festival, visit www. breconbaroquefestival.com and for bookings visit www.theatrbrycheiniog.co.uk or call 01877 611622. Following a complete sell-out last year, visitors are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

Wild in October

may well be native at Pwyll y Wrach Reserve. There is much to do in October with Volunteer work parties throughout the month and several special events. There will be support for “National Moth Night” which covers the nights of 12th to 14th.The theme will be Ivy which flowers now and is important to moths. Brecon Foodbank’s latest shopping list Urgently needed: Adult toothbrushes, washing liquid, strong carrier bags, dried milk. Also needed: Tinned spaghetti, custard, fruit (tinned), sponge puddings, cup-a-soup, chocolate, jam, coffee. Please ensure that all food donated is well within its use-by date. Also, they cannot use fresh or refrigerated items, or alcohol. Foodbank has funding to give clients one bag from the food co-op, so on their first visit they can provide them with a bag of fruit or veg for free, as long as they can collect it. This is a great scheme and some clients have continued to order when they have sorted out their finances, which is a great result. The easiest places for people to leave donations are Spar and Co-op. There are also collection points in Nat West and Barclays. People can also bring things to the centre. Foodbank also (very gratefully) accept money donations, as they have to pay bills and sometimes need to buy food when they get short. Savers today earn a fifth of the interest they received a decade ago before Northern Rock collapse

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING

Northern Rock savers who stayed loyal after the bank was bought by Virgin Money are today earning a fifth of the interest they got a decade ago. Virgin Money took on one million Northern Rock savers when it bought the bank in 2011. Its best one-year fixed rate bond pays 1.3 per cent, or £130 on £10,000. Ten years ago Northern Rock paid 6.71 per cent, which would have earned savers £541 more a year. Easy-access rates have also plummeted since the financial crisis. Today, Virgin’s best easy-access account pays 1.21 per cent, compared with Northern Rock’s 6.31 per cent a decade ago. That’s £510 a year less on a £10,000 nest-egg. Virgin’s best cash ISA pays 2.15 per cent, compared with Northern Rock’s 6.2 per cent in 2007. This means you’re earning £121.50 a year less on a £3,000 pot — the most you could save into a cash Isa in 2007. Charlotte Nelson, of financial data service Moneyfacts, says all banks and building societies have slashed rates since the financial crisis, and Virgin Money is still among the top payers. ‘Over the past ten years, savers have been tormented by rock-bottom rates. ‘With rates at a record low, it doesn’t take a lot to enter the best buy tables. ‘Long-suffering savers now have to be savvy to get the maximum return on their savings.’ Savers who were prepared to invest over the last 10 years would have seen far higher returns. For example, a £10,000 investment in the top performing U.K equity fund would have grown to £22,100.

Crisp clear days are what we all hope for during Autumn, when the trees of the Brecon Beacons are set ablaze, and we can be spoilt for choice of where to go and see the Autumn display at their best. Gliffaes Hotel just outside Crickhowell is well known locally as the place to go for afternoon tea, and for its stunning location overlooking the river Usk, and this position is enhanced by an amazing collection of mature trees from around the globe. The hotel has mapped out the collection so guests can explore the grounds and the trees at their leisure but during the Autumn the hotel organises a number of guided walks through the trees during this beautiful season. You can find out how the hotel manages the tree scape and how they are planting new trees to enhance the collection. These walks are followed by a lunch in the hotel. This Autumn, author and woodsman, Robert Penn, will be joining in the conversation on the walks through the trees with James Suter of Gliffaes. Rob Penn has just published a book on woods for the National Trust, ‘Woods: A Celebration’. Last year Rob published, “The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees” in which he felled an ash tree and followed the timber on its journey to a collection of highly skilled craftsmen and saw his wood turned into beautiful objects.

Caledonian Market

No, it is not Scottish! The name Caledonian comes from the Islington Cattle and General Market established in 1855, which closed at the end of World War II in 1945. It was especially noted for miscellaneous secondhand goods, and was much frequented by bargain hunters. This is a pretty good description of what will happen on the 4th November in the Market Hall, star ting at 11am. (Admission £1). By going there on this date, you can see why Brecon has a market with that title. It is run by the Rotary Club of Brecon. When it was started well over 30 years ago, the Caledonian Market was a small scale affair and yielded £1282 for charity. Last year, it raised nearly £11000 for charity, and it was a matter of all Rotarian hands and their friends

on deck, with the weeks preceding the event being the time when all manner of saleable items were collected from donors from all over the locality. This year, there is one telephone number to ring for collection arrangements to be settled, and apart from beds, large scale furniture and old TVs, videos and tapes, anything else which might have a sale value, however small, is acceptable. The last day for collections to be made will be Wednesday 1st November. The telephone number to use is 01874 636246. People say that Brecon’s Caledonian Market is the best opportunity to dispose of useable but unwanted items, and pick up at a pittance something that you wanted but they didn’t!

CONIFERS Conifers are trees with unique scale-like leaves or needles and their seed-bearing cones are easily recognised.Conifers are a wonderful way of adding colour and structure to your garden and as most varieties are evergreen; conifers provide interest all year round, particularly through the bare winter months. There is an amazing choice of different shapes and shades which can grow into large, often very fast-growing trees, although there are many dwarf varieties including effective groundcover plants. Many conifers make good hedges too.

From a small balcony with room for a container, to acres of grounds with space, conifers can add something truly special to any garden. A potted conifer can be used to brighten up a doorstep or balcony, whilst planted conifers can create height and add fantastic accent pieces to any garden. Conifers can offer a way to add something new and interesting to the garden at what is seen as a traditionally quiet time. Being hardy, easy to care for and long-lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for the margin gardener looking for a low maintenance, but high impact plant. Providing you select the correct size for your garden, conifers require only a little pruning and watering. Autumn is an ideal time to plant new conifers to establish themselves early and get through the winter before sprouting earlier and stronger in spring compared with conifers planted in spring. Feeding your conifers annually in April with a Blood, Fish & Bone fertiliser will increase the growth rate and enhance the colour of the foliage. Christmas card shop opens in Brecon supporting a wide range of charities It’s that time of year again when the Cards for Good Causes pop-up charity Christmas card shop opens in Brecon. This year they are all glad to be returning to their usual venue of St Mary’s Church, Brecon, following the recent roof repairs. The church is situated in the centre of the town, just look out for the tower. Why not get ahead in your Christmas preparations by getting your cards early. Jean and Liz, the shop managers, look forward to seeing everyone during the run up to Christmas.

In 1959, James “Jim” Jackson, Secretary of the British Diabetic Association, gathered a group of medical charities together to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling charity cards at Christmas. In 1964, they began selling cards from empty shops in town centres. The name “Cards for Good Causes” was first mooted in 1971, but it was not until 1988 that it was formally established as the trading arm of The 1959 Group of Charities.

Wednesday 18th October until Thursday 14th December, 2017.

Shop Opening Hours:

10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Saturday. Shop Address: St Mary’s Church, Steeple Lane, Brecon For further information visit www.cardsforcharity.co.uk or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

A list of 10... Books Paul Hanson runs a second-hand bookshop, aptly named Brecon Books, in Lion Yard, Brecon. Prior to getting into the book trade in Hay-on-Wye, some 25 years ago, he grew and sold specialist alpines in Hay.

It is hard to choose 10 favourites. If like me you see books all day long, it’s like being in a sweet shop, you are spoilt for choice! These spring to mind: Where The Rivers Meet : John Wain - 1930’s Oxford, and the life and romances of Peter Leonard, a snapshot of Britain prior to the Second World War. Under The Greenwood Tree :Thomas Hardy - A good introduction to Hardy, this lighter work sticks in my mind. Pillars Of The Earth : Ken Follett - 12th Century England, surely one of the great historical novels, gave the author a new following, and is amazing in its level of technical detail. The Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells : Alfred Wainwright - These books are works of art in miniature. My favourite, is the N.W Fells; they’re quieter. East Of Eden : John Steinbeck - A Nobel Prize winner, it tells of the story of two feuding families growing up in California.

Dresses for all occasions We have many stunning styles for your special occasions: weddings, cruises, formal events and office parties. We also have accessories including clutch bags, fascinators, shoes and bridal accessories.

The Poldark Omnibus : Winston Graham These books are as equally compelling as the TV adaptations. As dramatic as the setting requires, they are powerfully descriptive. The Phasian Bird : Henry Williamson - Williamson’s abhorrence of everything that man does to destroy nature around him, is evident in this account of an adopted pheasant chick. Set in 1930’s Norfolk.

Plus sizes available

The Death Of Grass : John Christopher Wyndhamesque post-apocalyptic story : a virus wipes out all the grass in the world, with catastrophic consequences.

You can find us next to the cinema on Wheat Street in Brecon Or you can now order online!

The History Of The Countryside : Oliver Rackham - Rackham writes as one of the greatest of all landscape historians.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

This week in Westminster has been one of the busiest I have experienced since initially being elected in 2015. As well as other smaller pieces of legislation, MPs voted on the extremely important EU Withdrawal Bill. This is probably the most important constitutional piece of legislation since the European Communities Act of 1972 and the point of the bill is to transfer all EU Law that affects the UK into UK law. Giving our Parliament the power to be able to rid ourselves of the regulations and laws we believe are unnecessary for the country and to keep the regulations and laws that help our nation prosper.

Every Tuesday at 6.00pm BRECON, Bishop Bevan Hall

Every Wednesday at 6.00pm GLANGRWYNEY, Glangrwyney Village Hall, Crickhowell Rd.

Tel Joan: 01873 561344 / 07796 628419

I am utterly dismayed that almost every single Labour, Plaid Cymru and Liberal Democrat MPs opposed the bill. We all know that the vast majority of Liberal and Labour MPs support staying in the European Union and wish we had never held this referendum in the first place. They need to wake up and realise that they can’t stop Brexit and that the democratic will of the British people must be respected. If they refuse to respect the referendum result, then they would be undermining the very fabric of our precious parliamentary democracy. A number of Labour MPs defied their whips and voted in favour of this bill as they realised the electoral significance of this vote. Many of their constituencies voted in favour of Brexit and they must represent the views of their constituents in the aftermath of a referendum result. It’s sad to see Jeremy Corbyn, who privately supports Brexit, being pushed to reject the bill by his pro-EU MPs. He should stand by his beliefs no matter how unpopular they may be in his own party. However, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru voted on mass against the bill in a cynical attempt to delay Brexit. I hope to see the Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire condemn her party’s attempt at disrupting and delaying Brexit.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

Throughout my time in the assembly, increasing jobs in Brecon and Radnorshire has been one of my top priorities. I recognise that small business are the driving force behind the economy here in Mid Wales. In fact, 93% of the businesses in Brecon and Radnorshire have fewer than 10 employees. So it is vital we support and nurture these small businesses. When I speak to business people in the constituency, one of the top issues that keeps coming up are the business rates they have to pay. According to figures I have obtained from the Valuations Office Agency, the total number of businesses in Breconshire and Radnorshire who have been subject to a business rates valuation is 3,813. So it will interest many of you that the Welsh Government is currently consulting the public on proposals for a new permanent small business rates relief (SBRR) scheme for Wales. The new policy will be in place for April next year. It will be a permanent scheme which aims to more effectively target support for small businesses. The consultation proposals include: limiting relief for businesses qualifying for SBRR across multiple properties, reviewing current and future exceptions from SBRR, increasing support for eligible small businesses, providing additional relief for certain sectors which support wider government objectives and what are the longer term considerations for the scheme. You have until October 13th to submit your views. It would be great if as many people from mid Wales as possible took part, so that the views of people in rural areas are heard loud and clear. Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth Last month, Brecon was the venue for two important meetings on the future of farming post Brexit. Firstly, on Thursday 7th September, Brecon High School hosted a packed ‘Farming for the Future’ roadshow, organised by the Welsh Government’s Farming Connect team. Farmers from the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and much further afield were in attendance. The event was chaired by former principal of Harper Adams University, Professor Wynne Jones, chair of Farming Connect, which aims to drive improvement, resilience and profitability in Welsh farming. High on the agenda was the recently introduced new Farm Business Grant (FBG) Scheme. The FBG Scheme is designed to enable farmers across Wales to benefit from financial support to make their businesses more competitive, delivering animal health benefits, enabling amongst other things safer handling of stock for monitoring and veterinary treatments.

I am glad to have played my part, alongside FUW and NFU Cymru, in advocating an accessible, modest scale scheme, funded jointly by Welsh Government and the European Union. Kirsty Williams, our Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, secured the delivery of this scheme, as part of her progressive agreement with First Minister, the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM in 2016.

Call: 01874 690417

And just last week, a Farming Connect ‘Ventures Workshop’ was scheduled to take place at the Castle of Brecon Hotel on Tuesday, 26th September - one of a series intended to explore the benefits of share farming and other innovative joint venture business models. With many experienced, veteran farmers in their 70s and 80s and numerous youngsters keen to start out on a farming career, but without access to the land, such practical & legal advice is critical to the future of Welsh farming.
